There are many words in the English language that have been borrowed from the French language. Some of the words are so mon in English that people think they are English words (1). These words are used in English around the world (2), not just in Canada where English and French are used side by side. An example of this kind of word is “fiancé”. It means the man that a woman has agreed to marry. Many words are borrowed from French. Another example is the word, “bouquet”. It means a group of cut flowers. The English language has bee more interesting because it has borrowed some French words.
In the world many people speak Chinese. Chinese is also very interesting. In Chinese, there are also some words that have been borrowed from English(3) . An example is the word “shafa”(沙发) in Chinese . It is “sofa”in English. The pronunciations sound similar.
“sofa”means large fortable padded seats with raised arms and back, wide enough for two or more people . Another example is the word “motuo”(摩托) in Chinese. It is “motorcycle”in English. It means a road vehicle with two wheels, driven by one engine, with one seat for the driver and with space for a passenger behind the driver.
