Marriage has been linked to higher survival rates among cancer sufferers – a new US study on the relationship between marriage and health suggests that the death rate is obviously higher among unmarried cancer patients than married patients.
Researchers from the Cancer Prevention Institute of California and the University of California, San Diego, looked at nearly 800,000 adults in the state who wer e diagnosed with cancer between 2000 and 2009. The academics then followed up on the patients’ progress until the end of 2012.
Marriage seemed to benefit both men and women, but the size of the effect varied between sexes and with race and ethnicity. For men, the rate of death wa s 27% higher among those who were unmarried compared with those who were married. For women, the rate was 19% higher among unmarried patients.
The study also revealed that Asian and Pacific Islander cancer patients –people of Chinese, Japanese or Indian descent –who were born in the United States experienced a greater benefit than those born outside the country.
The patterns were partially explained by greater economic resources among married patients such as having private health insurance and living in higher socio-economic status neighborhoods.
“While other studies have found similar protective effects associated with being married, ours is the first in a large population-based setting to assess the extent to which economic resources explain these protective effects,” said study author Scarlett Lin Gomez of the Cancer Prevention Institute of California.
24. According to the passage, cancer patients are most likely to survive because of_______.
A. the change of health insurance
B. the effect of marriage
C. the state of being unmarried
D. the condition of economy
25. What can we learn from Paragraph 2 and 3 in the passage?
A. The effect of the marriage is different among cancer patients.
B. Unmarried women patients have higher survival rate than married men.
C. The rate of death among men is lower than that in women.
D. Marriage only benefits men cancer patients a lot.
26. What can be inferred according to the passage?
A. Only the US study has found protective effects related to marriage.
B. Better economic resources are beneficial to cancers sufferers.
C. The people in America are more likely to cure their cancer.
D. Cancer patients outside the USA are taken less care of.
27. Which one could be the best title for the passage?
A. Cancer and marriage.
B. Cancer and Prevention.
C. Marriage and Survival rate.
D. Marriage and Love.

“Freelance retail consultant” refers to daigou in Chinese, or overseas people who buy goods for customers in the Chinese mainland.
It’s estimated that there are 40,000 daigou in Australia, most of whom are young migrants or international students looking for ways to help cover their rent and university cost.
These freelance retail consultants have created thousands of trading routes, both small and big, into China.
Shops in Australia sold out of instant formula (婴儿配方奶粉), leaving many Australian parents unable to buy their preferred brands. The Sydney Morning Herald reported last year that half of Australia’s infant formula sold went to China through customers selling to other customers.
Because of this, daigou have received criticism from Australian media. The Sydney Morning Post even suggested that the Australian government should put a limit on instant formula exports.
However, not everyone dislikes daigou. “ We think daigou are good for both the local economy… and they are very good for our business,” Peter N athan, the chief executive of A2 Milk, a New Zealand infant formula maker, told Reuters. “We clearly believe they are a positive force.”
Others agree that nothing is wrong with the practice. “People are buying these products legally on the Australian mark et… they’re not illegally being exp orted to China,” Tim Foulds, head of research at Euro monitor Australia and New Zealand, told The Washington Post.
28. Why do most daigou in Australia buy goods for Chinese customers?
A. To improve living conditions.
B. To satisfy import demand.
C. To pay their expenses.
D. To get sales experience.
29. According to the passage, which of the following is right?
A. Australian parents criticize daigou.
B. Consumers prefer milk made in Australia.
C. Australian government has limited exports.
D. Different ideas about daigou exist in Australia.
30. We can infer from the last two paragraphs that___________.
A. the practice of d aigou will balance supply and demand
B. d aigou will probably be welcomed in New Zealand
C. infant formula will grow in popularity in China
D. daigou will be a legal job in Australia soon
31. What’s the attitude of the author to Daigou?
A. Supportive.
B. Doubtful.
C. Negative.
D. Objective.
D
Famous people have a lot of influence on cultural trends, like it or not. When Oprah goes on a 21-day vegan diet, it makes headlines. When Amal Clooney wears a Stella McCartney dress, sales go way up. However, one trend that seems harmless—but is actually harmful—is the pressure on stars to have their photos taken with rare
animals.
Famous people who are asked to have photos taken with wild animals for a magazine spread or who do so while on vacation always have good intentions and even love animals. This makes them easy targets for the often greedy amusement parks and fake animal centers. These businesspeople love the thought of sharing pictures of a star hugging a baby tiger or a whale. Kind people are naturally drawn to places that claim to offer rare animals safety and are eager to see elephants paint, to hug baby bears or to swim with dolphins. However, being frequently exposed has shown that many of these businesspeople are breeders, dealers or exhibitors that are using stars’ goodwill for their own ends.
In some Asian countries, elephants are kept in camps. A few camps are working to help elephants in trouble, but the vast majority are not, and training methods are barbaric. As soon as the cameras are gone after someone like Prince William takes a photo with an elephant, the chains go back on.
Fans, tell the stars: Stay away from wild animal photos, and the animals will be grateful. Of course, you don’t have to be famous to make a difference. Whether right here at home or at an exotic place abroad, every one of us must fight the desire to take a photo with an elephant or hug a baby tiger.
32. Why are Oprah and Amal Clooney mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the topic of the passage.
B. To promote the cultural influence on stars.
C. To remind people how important the trend is.
D. To show famous people’s pressure from wild animals.
33. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The businesspeople offer chances to stars to get close to animals.
B. Famous stars use photos with rare animals to make a difference.
C. Businessmen take advanta ge of stars’ goodwill to earn money.
D. The kind and rich people are easily attracted to visit wild animals.
34. What does the underlined word “barbaric” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Effective.
B. Cruel.
C. Scientific.
D. Kind.
35. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The number of elephants and tigers is increasing.
B. Keeping away from animal pictures can protect them.
C. People will be encouraged to take photos with animals.
D. The famous may have a negative influence on cultural trend.

Although many Chinese students say that their knowledge of English grammar is good, most would admit that their spoken English is poor. Whenever I speak to a Chinese student, they always say, “My spoken English is poor.” However, their spoken English does not have to remain “poor”! __ 36__
First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to a limited vocabulary. ____37
__ 38__ Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous. Yet students should remember in speaking your aim is fluency. You want to get your message across, to talk to someone in English, as quickly and as well as you can. ____39_ The person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for any mistakes he hears.
The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth and two ears! All that hearing is necessary for you to start speaking!
Fourth, most Chinese students are reactive rather than proactive language learners. Instead of actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor. __ 40__
A. Sometimes you may use a wrong or tense, which doesn’t matter.
B. They may try to avoid making similar mistakes next time.
C. Obviously the better answer is to enlarge their vocabulary.
D. If you have this proactive outlook, you will see English opportunities wherever you go.
E. I would like to explain some reasons for it.
F. Second, they are afraid of making mistakes.
G. The second reason lies in the unwillingness of using what has just been learned.

第三节书面表达(25分)
Possible version
The School Sports Meeting
The annual sports meeting took place in our school last week. There were many events the students could take part in, like basketball, table tennis, running, high jump and long jump.
A lot of students couldn’t wait to take part in it and they encouraged each other to do better. On the playground, we saw many students cheering for the players and athletes. What a moving scene! What’s more, some students broke the school records. The sports meeting was a complete success, I believe. It not only helps the students to realize the importance of exercise, but also brings the students together!

W: I’m glad that you enjoy your life there. B ut remember not to work too hard. That won’t be good for your health.

M: Mary, tomorrow is your mum’s 50th birthday, you know?
W: Of course I do. How shall we celebrate it?
M: First of all, a birthday present. What about buying her a beautiful skirt? W: That’s a good idea. It’ll make her look younger. And a big birthday cake, too, with 50 candles.
M: That’s right. Shall we have a special dinner?
W: How about a Chinese dinner?
M: Fine. Where shall we have it?
W: We can have it at home and learn to cook a few dishes from a Chinese friend. I’m sure Mum will like them.
M: All right. Are you going to do the shopping as well?
W: Why don’t we go together, Dad?
M: OK. When?
W: How about this afternoon?

A poor farmer had a friend who was famous for the wonderful apple trees which he grew. One day, his friend gave him a young tree and told him to take it home and plant it. The farmer was pleased with the gift, but when he got home he didn’t know where to plant it. He was afraid that if he planted the tree near the road, strangers would steal the fruit. If he planted the tree on one of his fields, his neighbors would come at night and steal some of the apples. If he planted the tree near his house, his children would take the fruit. Finally he planted the tree in his woods
where no one could see it. But without sunlight and good soil, the tree soon died. Later the friend asked the farmer why he had planted the tree in such a poor place.
“Why?” the farmer said angrily. “If I had planted the tree near the road, strangers would have stolen the fruit; if I had planted the tree , my neighbors would have come at night and stolen some of the apples; if I had planted it near my house, my own children would have taken the fruit.”
“Yes,” said the friend, “but at least someone could have enjoyed the fruit. Now you have robbed everyone of the fruit and you have also destroyed a good tree.”。
