I would like to talk about my favorite sport, running. I only take it up a few months ago thanks to my colleagues whom are professional runners.
I spend more than two hours run every afternoon. There are several reasons why I am fond this sport. First, it is the pretty cheap and easy sport to
try. All I need is a pair of running shoes. Second, this is a sport that can bring us some new friends. Third, since I started this sport I have hardly caught any more common health issue like fever, flu, or cold. What’s more, I can show higher productivity than before and work for longer hours without feeling tiring. All in all, I recommend that everyone tries this sport.

13. Growing up in Wolverhampton, I loved observing insects. When I was five, my dog destroyed an ants’ nest. Trying to make it up to them, I started making little houses, using wood pieces and leaves. When my mother saw my work, she told me that the smaller I made things, the bigger my name would become. Her words were some lost on me, but when I saw ants in their new houses, curiosity about making small things was seeded.
As a teenager, I began working with new materials, and my designs became more complicated and distinctive. I used many materials, including gold, to create my sculptures and processed them with tools I made. I sometimes worked for 16 hours a day, and it took me up to three months to finish a sculpture. I had to hold my breath during the process, and slowed my heartbeat to control my fingers. It wasn’t actually an enjoyable process — I could only enjoy it when I’d finished.
My sculptures have taken me to incredible places. However, I find it hard to celebrate these milestones, as there’s always room for improvement. One time, a fly landed on an Alice in Wonderland sculpture I was working on based on the tale. Its wings blew my Alice away when it left. I sought for it for hours, yet it was tiny. The Alice is now in Wonderland forever. But it did give me the chance to make an even better one.
I was found to have autism (自闭症) as an adult. Back in the 1960s, when I was at school, there wasn’t much awareness of the condition. Some pointed me out as an example of failure; I shared the view then. Now I treasure my autism. It’s made me focused and pushed me to be the best I can be. I hold workshops in schools for neurodiverse children, telling them my life story and helping them create their own figures.
The microscopic world has always been my happy place. I’ve tried to make big sculptures, but small ones are best for me. I appreciate the little things in life. They can be overlooked, but can also be mighty.1. What inspired the author to start making small sculptures?
A .His observation of insects.
B .The encouragement from his mother.
C .His passion for tiny things.
D .The experience of building an ants’ nest.2. What does it take to finish a sculpture according to paragraph 2?
A .Complex and unique design.
B .Precious materials.
C.Great patience and caution.D.Vivid imaginations.
3. What does the underlined sentence imply about the Alice in Wonderland sculpture?
A.It is one of the milestones.B.The author failed to find it at last.
C.It is housed in a wonderland.D.The author remembers it forever.
4. What does the author say about his autism?
A.It inspires nearly all kids.B.It happened to him in adulthood.
C.It contributes to his creations.D.It was the consequence of failure.

文章主要说明了切罗基人打算把大烟山国家公园最高峰的名字改回来,并讲述了切罗基人的悲惨历史。

14. Great Smoky Mountains National Park lies on both sides of the border between North Carolina and Tennessee. Its highest peak is called “Clingmans Dome”. But before it got that name, the Cherokee people called the mountain “Kuwahi”. It sits on ancestral Cherokee homelands. Since the ancient times, the landscape, including mountains and streams, has shaped the history of Cherokee people. They used that name for hundreds of years. Now, tribal members are hoping to return to the Kuwahi name.
The Cherokee Nation once spread across what is now Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Alabama. In 1838, the tribe was forcibly relocated to present-day Oklahoma—in what was later known as the “Trail of Tears”. Through sickness and terrible travel conditions, nearly 4,000 Cherokee people died during the forced removal from their homeland. Some Cherokee managed to avoid relocation to Oklahoma by going into hiding, including on Kuwahi. “We’re here today because our ancestors hid in those mountains, specifically in Kuwahi,” Hill said.
The name change of the Cherokee’s mountain came in 1859, when geographer and professor Arnold Henry Guyot labeled Kuwahi “Clingmans Dome”. The peak was named after Thomas Lanier Clingman, who was a strong supporter of slavery. Clingman was not connected to the Cherokee people in any way. “Naming the mountain after Clingman erases everything that the Cherokee people are in order to rename it after someone with zero ties to our community. He didn’t even live here,” said Hill.
In June 2022, Y ellowstone National Park’s Mount Doane was renamed to First Peoples Mountain. “That was a huge victory for our brothers and sisters,” Hill said. “I hope it’s just the beginning of accurately recognizing and honoring numerous historically significant sites for tribes and native people nationwide. There were so many places that were special and important to native people prior to colonization. I want to be the voice for my people, for my ancestors.”
1. What do the Cherokee people intend to do according to Paragraph 1?
A.Save their language.B.Go back to their homeland Kuwahi.
C.Reshape their history.D.Change the name back to “Kuwahi”.
2. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The sad history of the Cherokee people.
B.The sheltering place for the Cherokee people.
C.The causes of the decrease of the Cherokee people.
D.The traveling route of the ancient Cherokee Nation.
3. What does Hill think of “Clingmans Dome”?
A.It is related to the culture of the Cherokee people.
B.It reminds the Cherokee people of their ancestors.
C.It removes everything about the Cherokee history.
D.It reflects the slave position of the Cherokee people.
4. What does Hill actually mean in the last paragraph?
A.To add great honor to her ancestors.B.To make his homeland well-known.
C.To express the opinions of her people.D.To name more historically significant sites.

15. In the blue-green depths of the sea off the coast of Tuscany, Italy, an unusual seafloor sculpture park is defending its watery setting.
Since fisherman Paolo’s teens, he has been leading out daily to fish in these coastal waters along the Maremma coastline. It was in the 1980s that he began to notice the clear signs: a seabed that was becoming poor, with exhausted fish stocks. Until recently, he was forced to share catches with a threatening part: illegal “bottom trawlers’’(拖网捕鱼的人), who randomly spoil a large quantity of ocean life as they fish, dragging a weighted net along the seafloor behind their boats.
Paolo’s style of artisanal fishing, in contrast, needs to be sustainable as damaging the ecosystem could reduce fisher men’s income. Paolo understood that the success of his fishing activity was linked to the good state of the environment. “If the sea dies, so does the fisherman. Y ou can’t just take. Y ou have to give, too,” said Paolo. The underwater “House of Fish”sculpture park, which was started in 2015, was encouraged by this fisher man’s desire to do something that went beyond the handful of concrete blocks he had previously convinced local authorities and some environmental groups to drop into the sea to try and stop illegal trawling.
Concrete blocks or sculptures can break weighted trawler nets. They can also play a role as artificial reefs, giving corals and other sea life a place to live, and varying shade and lighting to help species flourish. Thanks to the underwater sculptures, some species not seen in a long while such as groupers and lobsters have returned. The sculpture park represents both an artistic statement and a physical barrier to seafloor trawling.
Today, 39 huge,other-worldly stone sculptures dot the seabed along a stretch of Tuscan coastline near the town of Talamone. These artworks have been already coated with algae, a sign that the natural habitat is being revived. In the immediate future, Paolo hopes to continue his beautiful solution in coastal waters. “Man is still destroying the seas,” he says. “And my mission continues.”
1. What threatens Paolo’s work of artisanal fishing?
A.Increasing fishermen.B.Frequent bad weather.
C.Illegal trawling industry.D.Concrete blocks on the seafloor.
2. Why does Paolo want to build underwater sculpture parks?
A.To show his creativity in carving.
B.To protect the ecosystem of the sea.
C.To boost the development of local tourism.
D.To warn people against fishing in coastal waters.
3. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The process of building sculpture parks.
B.The results of banning seafloor trawling.
C.The roles of sculpture parks under the sea.
D.The damaging effects of trawling on sea life.
4. What could be the best title of this text?
A.The First Underwater Park in the World.
B.Fanciulli’s Innovation in Cleaning the Ocean.
C.Waters with Sculptures: Better Habitats for Fishes.
D.Seafloor Parks: Artworks for Protecting Our Sea.

威尔士家具制造商Andy Dix使用英国种植的白蜡树制造自行车,这将减少环境污染,对环境保护有非常重要的意义。

16. Bicycle riding has taken the world by storm. Bicycles are typically made of steel or aluminum (铝) but now there is a unique company that is growing bikes on trees, literally. These bicycles are made of British grown ash trees by Welsh maker Andy Dix. His Hay-on-Wye company, Twmpa Frames, is making bikes that are of high performance and environmentally sustainable.
“It’s great to push for more bikes and fewer cars on the road, but there’s no escaping the fact that the bike industry as a whole is pretty energy intensive,” Dix told Cycling Industry, “I’ve always tried to minimize environmental impact in my work. Rather than relying on heavily-processed metals, or layers of plastic that will one day end up in landfill, I’m building bikes from captured carbon, in a process powered by sunlight.”
It took two years to build the prototype (雏形) that was made from ash wood. Dix tested the wooden bike on the roughest roads he could find and discovered that it was comfortable, durable, and excellent at absorbing shakes. He put more than 3,000 miles on the bike. Dix explained, “I was running along battered roads that would have shaken me to bits on a aluminum bike. The penny dropped. Not only could I make a bike out of wood, but it had inherent advantages over other materials.”
Though cutting down trees can add to more carbon in the atmosphere, sustainable tree farming is possible. Dix said that manufacturing a British tonne of aluminum results in carbon emissions of 4,532 kg while producing a tonne of wood only emits 457 kg. Currently, the cost of a new Twmpa Cycle is out-of-reach for many bicycle riders; but the idea of using sustainable materials like ash trees could start a new cycling revolution that puts the environment first. Helping the environment could be just a pedal away.
1. What’s paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The materials for building bikes.B.The driving force for wooden bikes.
C.The problems with cycling industry.D.The process of building wooden bikes.
2. What does the underlined part “The penny dropped” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.The truth came out.B.Money was missing.
C.The bike broke down.D.The efforts were in vain.
3. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Logging trees is a wrong practice.
B.Developing sustainable forestry is a must.
C.Carbon emission calls for urgent attention.
D.The wooden bike does more good than harm.
4. Which of the following is a suitable title of the text?
A.Less Carbon, More Sustainable B.Amazing? Bikes Grow on Trees
C.No Innovation, No Development D.Amusing? Bike Riding Is Taking off
七、阅读理解
文章大意:这是一篇说明文。

文章主要解释了为什么老虎是橙色的。

17. Why Are T igers Orange?
The colors of an animal serve lots of different purposes — for instance, to help them hide into surroundings and escape from being noticed by preys (猎物). For tigers, their ability to be invisible will just decide whether they catch dinner or go hungry. 1
As for humans, orange is a color used for items that need to stand out, like traffic lights and safety vests. That’s because we have what’s called trichromatic color vision, which differentiate three types of color: blue, green and red. 2 But most other mammals, including dogs, horses and deer, have dichromatic (二色的) color vision for only two colors: blue and green. Humans who get information only of blue and green are considered color-blind, and can’t distinguish between red and green colors. 3
Mammals like deer are the tiger’s main prey, and their dichromatic vision means they don’t see tigers as orange — they see them as green. That makes the tiger much harder to spot as it’s prowling behind a bush or crouching in the grass. Although green tigers would probably be even harder to spot, evolution (进化) just doesn’t work with the ingredients necessary to make green fur. 4 The only recognizably green mammal is a sloth, and its fur isn’t green in fact. That’s an alga that grows in its fur.
5 There seems to be no evolutionary pressure, particularly for deer, which are the main prey of the tiger, to become trichromatic. That’s
probably because the tiger doesn’t know it’s orange either. So, the evolutionary race really doesn’t exist for that color. It’s just that the tiger has evolved over the sweep of evolution to have a coloring, a hiding system, which protects it very well in its jungle setting.
A.Actually, there are no green furry animals.
B.Orange fur makes tigers relatively easy to spot.
C.The same is likely true for dichromatic animals.
D.Then, why don’t deer evolve the ability to see orange?
E.So, of all the colors they could be, why are tigers orange?
F.Colors of humans’ eyes are quite similar to many other mammals’.
G.We share this style of vision with some mammals like apes and certain monkeys.
