But Mr. Hargraves was ambitious, and often spoke of his great desire to succeed in legitimate comedy. This young man appeared to conceive a strong fancy for Major Talbot. Whenever that gentleman would begin his Southern reminiscences, or repeat some of the liveliest of the anecdotes, Hargraves could always be found, the most attentive among his listeners. For a time the Major showed an inclination to discourage the advances of the " play actor," ashe privately termed him; but soon the young man's agreeable manner and indubitable appreciation of the old gentleman's stories completely won him over.It was not long before the two were like old chums. The Major set apart each afternoon to read to him the manuscript of his book. During the anecdotes Hargraves never failed to laugh at exactly the right point. The Major was moved to declare to Miss Lydia one day that young Hargraves possessed remarkable perception and a gratifying respect for the old regime. And when it came to talking of those old days—if Major Talbot liked to talk, Mr. Hargraves was entranced to listen.Like almost all old people who talk of the past, the Major loved to linger over details. In describing the splendid, almost royal, days of the old planters, he would hesitate until he had recalled the name of the negro who held his horse, or the exact date of certain minor happenings, or the number of bales of cotton raised in such a year; but Hargraves never grew impatient or lost interest. On the contrary, he would advance questions on a variety of subjects connected with the life of that time, and he never failed to extract ready replies.汉译英32 六十整岁望七十岁如攀高山。

消費者という言葉は、経済用語のなかでもっとも不適切な一つだと私は思います。

广东插本常考英语作文

广东插本常考英语作文

广东插本常考英语作文Possible essay:The Importance of Learning Local Dialects in Guangdong。

Guangdong, a southern province of China, is known forits rich cultural heritage and diverse linguistic landscape. Apart from Mandarin, the official language of China, there are numerous dialects spoken in Guangdong, such as Cantonese, Teochew, Hakka, and Hainanese. Each dialect has its unique features, vocabulary, and pronunciation, reflecting the local history, geography, and customs. Inthis essay, I will argue that learning local dialects in Guangdong is not only a means of communication but also a way of preserving and appreciating the local culture.Firstly, learning local dialects in Guangdong is essential for effective communication. While Mandarin is widely spoken and understood in China, it may not be sufficient for daily interactions in Guangdong, where manypeople prefer to use their native dialects. For example, if you want to order food in a local restaurant, you may needto know some Cantonese phrases like "m̀h’ hóu sīk" (not delicious) or "síu jyú" (roasted goose). Similarly, ifyou want to bargain in a market, you may need to use some Teochew expressions like "kāi pò" (lower the price) or"sēng tài lè" (too expensive). By learning local dialects, you can show your respect and interest in thelocal culture, as well as avoid misunderstandings and conflicts.Secondly, learning local dialects in Guangdong is a way of preserving and appreciating the local culture. Dialects are not just a collection of words and sounds, but a reflection of the history, identity, and values of a community. In Guangdong, each dialect has its unique origin and evolution, shaped by the migration, trade, and cultural exchange of different ethnic groups. For example, Cantonese, also known as Yue, is believed to have originated from the ancient Baiyue people who lived in the region before the Han dynasty. Teochew, also known as Chaozhou, is influenced by the Minnan dialects of Fujian and Taiwan, as well as theoverseas Chinese communities in Southeast Asia. Hakka, also known as Kejia, is spoken by the Hakka people who migrated from Central China to Guangdong and other parts of the world. By learning local dialects, you can appreciate the diversity and richness of Guangdong's cultural heritage, as well as contribute to its preservation and transmission to future generations. Finally, learning local dialects in Guangdong can also bring personal and social benefits. By mastering a local dialect, you can enhance your linguistic and cultural competence, as well as broaden your social network and opportunities. For example, if you can speak Cantonese, you may be able to work as a translator, tour guide, or teacher in Guangdong or Hong Kong, where Cantonese is widely used. Moreover, by speaking a local dialect, you can establish a closer relationship with the local people, who may appreciate your effort and respect for their culture. This can lead to better communication, understanding, and cooperation in various contexts, such as business, education, and tourism. In conclusion, learning local dialects in Guangdong is not only a practical necessity but also a cultural and personal enrichment. By embracing the linguistic diversity and cultural heritage of Guangdong, we can communicate more effectively, appreciate more deeply, and connect more meaningfully with the local people and their culture. Therefore, I encourage everyone who lives, works, ortravels in Guangdong to learn and use its local dialects, and to promote their value and significance to others.。

题目:The Impact of Technology onModern EducationIn the 21st century, technology has revolutionized almost every aspect of our lives, and education is no exception. The advent of digital tools and platforms has brought about significant changes in the way we learn and teach, transforming traditional classrooms into dynamic and interactive learning environments. This essay will explore the impact of technology on modern education, discussing both its benefits and challenges.Firstly, let's delve into the benefits of technology in education. One of the most显著的优势is the increase in accessibility. With the help of the internet and mobile devices, students can now access educational resources from anywhere at any time. This flexibility allows them to fit learning into their schedules, whether it's a quickrevision before an exam or a more in-depth study session. Furthermore, digital tools such as online databases, simulation software, and interactive platforms provide students with a more engaging and immersive learningexperience. These tools make complex concepts easier to understand and retain, thus enhancing learning outcomes. Moreover, technology has also revolutionized the way teachers teach. With the use of digital platforms, teachers can create dynamic lesson plans that incorporate videos, animations, and interactive exercises to keep students engaged. This approach not only makes learning more fun but also helps students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Additionally, teachers can now trackstudent progress and identify areas of weakness more easily, allowing them to provide timely feedback and interventions. However, despite these benefits, technology ineducation also poses some challenges. One of the biggest concerns is the potential for technology addiction. With so much information and entertainment available at our fingertips, it's easy for students to become overwhelmedand distracted. This can lead to decreased focus and attention spans, affecting their ability to learn effectively.Another challenge is the issue of digital divide. While technology has made education more accessible, it has alsocreated a divide between those who have access to digital resources and those who don't. This divide can lead to educational inequity, preventing some students from accessing the same opportunities as their peers.Lastly, the rapid pace of technological advancement can make it difficult for teachers and students to keep up. As new tools and platforms emerge, it's essential for educators to stay updated and trained to ensure that they are effectively utilizing these tools to enhance learning. In conclusion, while technology has brought about significant benefits to modern education, it also poses some challenges that need to be addressed. By harnessing the power of technology and overcoming its limitations, we can create a more inclusive, engaging, and effective learning environment that benefits students of all backgrounds and abilities.**科技对现代教育的影响**在21世纪,科技几乎改变了我们生活的每一个方面,教育也不例外。

2021年广东专升本英语作文参考English:In recent years, with the rapid development of society and the economy, the demand for higher education has been increasing, leading to a surge in the number of people pursuing further studies through adult education programs. As a result, the question of whether attending adult education or regular higher education is more beneficial has garnered significant attention. From my perspective, both paths have their own merits and drawbacks. On one hand, adult education offers flexibility in terms of time and location, allowing individuals to balance their studies with work and other responsibilities. Additionally, adult education programs often focus on practical skills and knowledge directly applicable to the workplace, enabling students to acquire relevant expertise efficiently. On the other hand, traditional higher education provides a more structured learning environment with comprehensive academic resources, opportunities for networking, and a vibrant campus life. Moreover, degrees obtained through regular higher education programs may carry more weight in certain professional fields or industries. Ultimately, the choice between adult education andtraditional higher education depends on individual circumstances, career goals, and personal preferences. Some individuals may prefer the convenience and practicality of adult education, while others may prioritize the comprehensive learning experience and social aspects offered by traditional higher education. Regardless of the path chosen, continuous learning and self-improvement are essential for personal and professional growth in today's competitive world.Translated content:近年来,随着社会经济的快速发展,对高等教育的需求不断增加,导致通过成人教育项目进修的人数激增。

广东专升本英语作文押题

广东专升本英语作文押题

广东专升本英语作文押题I am not able to participate in the Guangdong Provincial College English Proficiency Test for non-degree undergraduate students. However, I can provide a sample essay on a potential topic for the test.Sample Essay: The Impact of Technology on CommunicationIn today's fast-paced world, technology has revolutionized the way we communicate. The advent of smartphones, social media, and instant messaging has made it easier than ever to stay connected with others. While these advancements have undoubtedly improved our ability to communicate, they have also brought about several challenges. In this essay, I will explore the impact of technology on communication from multiple perspectives, considering both the positive and negative aspects of this evolution. From a positive standpoint, technology has undeniably made communication more convenient and efficient. With the click of a button, we can send a message to someone on the other side of the world, bridging geographical barriers and fostering global connections. Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have allowed us to share our thoughts, experiences, and emotions with a wide audience, creating a sense of community and belonging. Additionally, video calling and conferencing tools have made it possible to have face-to-face conversations with loved ones or colleagues, even when they are far away. These technological advancements have enriched our lives and expanded our social circles in ways that were previously unimaginable. However, the pervasive use of technology in communication also has its downsides. One of the most significant concerns is the erosion of face-to-face interaction. With the prevalence of texting and instant messaging, many people have become accustomed to communicating through screens rather than in person. This shift has led to a decline in the development of essential social skills, such as reading nonverbal cues and maintaining eye contact. Furthermore, theconstant connectivity afforded by technology has blurred the boundaries between work and personal life, leading to increased stress and burnout for many individuals. The pressure to be constantly available and responsive can take atoll on mental health and interpersonal relationships.Another drawback of technology in communication is the rise of misinformation and fake news. The ease of sharing information online has led to the proliferation of unreliable sources and misleading content, making it challenging to discernfact from fiction. This has significant implications for public discourse and decision-making, as misinformation can sway opinions and shape societal beliefs. Additionally, the anonymity provided by the internet has given rise to cyberbullying and online harassment, posing serious threats to individuals' well-being and safety. In conclusion, the impact of technology on communication is a double-edged sword. While it has undoubtedly enhanced our ability to connect with others and share information, it has also presented challenges that must be addressed. As we continue to navigate the digital age, it is essential to strike a balance between leveraging the benefits of technology and mitigating its negative effects. By being mindful of our digital habits and promoting responsible online behavior, we can harness the power of technology to improve communication and foster meaningful connections.。

Reading Comprehension (30 points)Directions:In this section, there are three passages followed by questions or unfinished statements, each with four suggested answers marked A, B, C, and D. Choose the best answer and write the letter of your choice on the ANSWER SHEET.Passage OneThe world’s greatest structures built by insects or animals other than humans are, surprisingly, constructed by termites. Termites, sometimes known as white ants, are little insects that resemble ants in appearance, but they tend to be smaller, fatter, slower moving. There are about twelve to fifteen hundred species of termites. However, not a single one of them belong to the same class of insects as ants. Termites are actually more closely related to cockroaches and mantids. They are known to be social insects that have an instinct to use a system of cooperation and specialization as their main method of survival. Termites are most known to people and scientists for their peculiar and marvelous works of architecture. Australian and African termites, especially, build housing structures reaching almost ten meters in height. Considering their relative size, such a building would be theequivalent of a 200-story edifice for humans. Their knowledge to construct such astonishing structures is known to be inborn in their nature. The termite nest, or termitary, usually takes the shape of a gigantic mound, or sometimes a multi-fingered hand, rising up from the surface. To build this housing for the colony, termites spend a considerable amount of time. It may take months, or sometimes even a year. The most common material composing a termitary is dirt. Termites carry the local soil and combine it with their saliva to solidify it. Because it is very firm and also impermeable, it is frequently used by people in Africa as a material for building their shelters. The termitary consists of thousands of chambers, each for a different purpose. The bottom layer of the mound generally serves as the living and working quarter for workers that assume the labors of foraging, food storage, and nest maintenance. Their chambers are located in the lower core so that they can easily go in and out of the termitary in search for food. Some species have gardens of various fungi in this lower part of the nest. The workers are in charge of cultivating and harvesting them as a stable source of food for the young. Above the worker chamber dwell termite soldiers devotedly protect their kind. Soldiers, as a mechanism for fighting, have developed big, strong jaws proportionally too big for their body size. Therefore, they cannot feed themselves without the help of workers. Above these two layers lie chambers called nymphs. The eggs and young termites stay here until they hatch and are fully grown. There is also a room for food storage in this part of the nest. At the top of the mound are the royal chambers for the kings and queens. Any males and females that mate with the opposite sex are termed as kings and queens. Each couple is in different chambers sustaining close proximity all the time. Once a termite has been chosen as a king or queen, such title and responsibility remains for the rest of its life. Unlike male ants which die immediately after mating, termite kings enjoy peaceful lives and are considered just as important as the queen. Queens, at maturity, can lay over a thousand eggs per day.One of the amazing facts about a termitary is that it comes with the most efficient systems of cooling and ventilation. Walls of the mixture of soil and salivahelp keep the nest moist, and thus, cool. Each layer of the mound where a different class of termites resides is vented by a system of passages and ducts, which circulate air throughout because they are connected with parts of the nest in between the layers that have ventilation holes. Thus, the termitary is always maintained cool by having access to a supply of fresh air or light breeze and by allowing stale air to leave. This is very good news for termites, for they will not last even for a few minutes in sweltering conditions. Moreover, termites living in the most arid regions also manage to keep themselves cool by digging into the earth as deep as it is necessary, sometimes resulting in depths over 100 feet. Their task is completed when they reach underground water. This waterway brings a supply of cool and fresh air that rises to the nest and circulates throughout. The gardens tended by workers are also known to aid the cooling process.1. According to paragraph 1, termites achieve fascinating works of architecture withA. about twelve to fifteen hundred species.B. cooperative help from ants.C. their intrinsic knowledge.D. numerous trials and errors.2. It can be inferred from paragraph 3 that termite soldiersA. cannot fly.B. fight with their jaws.C. sometimes search for food.D. eat termite workers.3. According to paragraph 3, what is the main difference between royalties of ants and termites?A. There is only one queen in an ant colony whereas there are many in a termite colony.B. Male termites that become king live on even after the mating process is over.C. Queen termites can lay more eggs compared to queen ants.D. Kings and queens of a termite colony must mate their whole lives.4. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage about the cooling andventilation systems in a termitary?A. They are absolutely necessary for the survival of termites.B. Supply of air in hot and arid regions will only make the termitary hotter.C. Water from underground is an essential component of the systems.D. It cannot work properly without the fungi gardens.5. Which of the sentences below best expresses the essential information in the italicized sentence in the passage?A. All passages and ducts in a termitary can be supplied with fresh air because theyare hooked up together.B. Termites punch out ventilation holes in every chamber to obtain direct supply of air in all passages and ducts.C. Fresh air rising from the underground passages and ducts flows all the way through and cools the termitary.D. Every layer has ventilation holes that are attached to passages and ducts locatedoutside the termitary where fresh air comes from.Passage TwoWhen I accepted a volunteer position as a social worker at a domestic violence shelter in a developing nation, I imagined the position for which my university experience had prepared me. I envisioned conducting intake interviews and traipsing around from organization to organization seeking the legal, psychological and financial support that the women would need to rebuild their lives. When I arrived, I felt as if I already had months of experience, experience garnered in the hypothetical situations I had invented and subsequently resolved single-handedly and seamlessly. I felt thoroughly prepared to tackle head-on the situation I assumed was waiting for me.I arrived full of zeal, knocking at the shelter’s door. Within moments, my reality made a sharp break from that which I had anticipated. The coordinator explained that the shelter’s need for financial self-sufficiency had become obvious and acute. To address this, the center was planning to open a bakery. I immediately enthused about the project, making many references to the small enterprise case studies I had researched at the university. In response to my impassioned reply, the coordinator declared me in charge of the bakery and left in order to “get out of my way.” At that moment, I was as prepared to bake bread as I was to run for political office. The bigger problem, however, was that I was completely unfamiliar with the for-profit business models necessary to run the bakery. I was out of my depth in a foreign river with only my coordinator’s confidence to keep me afloat. They say that necessity is the mother of invention. I soon found that it is also the mother of initiative. I began finding recipes and appropriating the expertise of friends. With their help making bread, balancing books, printing pamphlets and making contacts, the bakery was soon running smoothly and successfully. After a short time it became a significant source of income for the house. In addition to funds, baking bread provided a natural environment in which to work with and get to know the women of the shelter. Kneading dough side by side, I shared in the camaraderie of the kitchen, treated to stories about their children and the towns and jobs they had had to leave behind to ensure their safety. Baking helped me develop strong relationships with the women and advanced my understanding of their situations. It also improved the women’s self-esteem. Their ability to master a new skill gave them confidence in themselves, and the fact that the bakery contributed to the upkeep of the house gave the women, many of them newly single, a sense of pride and the conviction that they had the capability to support themselves.Baking gave me the opportunity to work in a capacity I had not at all anticipated, but one that proved very successful. I became a more sensitive and skillful social worker, capable of making a mean seven-grain loaf. Learning to bake gave me as much newfound self-confidence as it gave the women, and I found that sometimes qualitysocial work can be as simple as kneading dough.6. The primary purpose of the passage is to show how the authorA. was shocked by the discrepancy between her earlier ideas about her work and thereality she facedB. discovered a talent her overly focused mind had never allowed her to exploreC. broadened how she defined the scope of her workD. developed her abilities to orchestrate a for-profit business enterprise7. The author was initially enthusiastic about the idea of the bakery because sheA. considered it from a theoretical point of viewB. hoped to obtain a leadership position in the bakeryC. wanted to demonstrate her baking knowledge to her new coordinatorD. believed it would be a good way to build the women’s self-esteem8. The comparison between baking bread and running political office demonstrates the author’s belief thatA. the bakery would never be a successB. social workers should not be involved in either baking or politicsC. similar skills were involved in both baking and politicsD. she was unqualified for a job baking bread9. The penultimate sentence in the second paragraph suggests that the author believed thatA. learning the necessary business practices would be a more daunting challenge thanlearning to bake breadB. good business practices are more important to running a successful bakery thanis the quality of the breadC. her coordinator’s confidence in for-profit business models was misplacedD. for-profit business models are significantly more complex than the nonprofitmodels with which she was familiar10. The last sentence (“Learning... dough”) indicates that the authorA. found that performing social work is surprisingly easy with no educationB. underestimated her own ability to learn new skillsC. discovered that social work is more effective when it includes tactile activitiesD. derived a benefit from her work while helping othersPassage ThreeFor people in Southeast Asian refugee families, the experience of aging in America is very different from what they had expected for their second half of life. Older Southeast Asian refugees must cope with their rapidly acculturating younger family members, while taking on new roles and expectations in a foreign culture. Many Southeast Asian immigrants are surprised to find that by American standards, they are not even considered elderly. Migration to a new culture often changes the definition of life stages. In the traditional Hmong culture of Vietnam, one can become an elder at 35 years of age when one becomes a grandparent. With grandparent status, elder Hmong can retire and expect their children to take financial responsi-bility for the family. Retiring at 35, of course, is not common in the United States. There is a strong influence of Confucianism in traditional Vietnamese society. Confucianism, an ancient system of moral and religious thought, fosters strong filial piety and respect for family elders. In many Southeast Asian societies, age roles are hierarchical, with strict rules for social interaction. In America, however, because older refugees lack facility with the English language and knowledge of American culture, their credibility decreases when advising younger family members about important decisions. As younger family members take on primary roles as family mediators with American institutions—schools, legal systems, and social service agencies, for example—the leadership position of elders within the family is gradually eroded.Refugee elders must also cope with differences in gender roles in the United States. Even before migration, traditional gender roles were changing in Southeast Asia. During the Vietnam War, when men of military age were away, women took responsibility for tasks normally divided along gender lines. When Vietnamese families came to this country, these changes became more pronounced. There were more employment opportunities for younger refugees and middle-aged refugee women because their expectations often fit with the lower status jobs that were among the few opportunities open to refugees. Many middle-aged women and younger refugees of both sexes became family breadwinners. This was a radical change for middle-aged men, who had been the major breadwinners of the family.Although the pattern for long-term adaptation of middle-aged and older Southeast Asian refugees is still unknown, there are indications that the outlook for women is problematic. Many older women provide household and childcare services in order to allow younger family members to hold jobs or go to school. While these women are helping younger family members to succeed in America, they themselves are often isolated at home and cut off from learning English or other new skills, or becoming more familiar with American society. Thus, after the immigrant family passes through the early stages of meeting basic survival needs, older women may find that they are strangers in their own families as well as in their new country.11. The major purpose of the passage is to discussA. the reasons why Southeast Asian people move to the United StatesB. educational challenges facing young refugees in America todayC. problems that elderly Southeast Asian people encounter in AmericaD. changing gender relationships in Southeast Asian refugee families12. In paragraph 1, “older Southeast Asian refugees must cope with their rapidly acculturating younger family members” refers toA. middle-aged men’s embarrassment at not being the principal breadwinnerB. middle-aged women’s isolation in the homeC. younger refugees’ better educational and social opportunities in AmericaD. the tendency of younger refugees to join non-Asian gangs13. The author uses the term “family mediators” to mean theA. traditional role of elders in Vietnamese familiesB. responsibilities which young refugees assume in a new countryC. help that newly arrived refugees get from friends who migrated earlierD. professional help available to refugee families in U.S. communities14. The phrase “radical change” in the last but one paragraph refers to the fact thatA. older refugees find that retirement ages are very different in AmericaB. women filled men’s jobs during the Vietnam WarC. the education of their children is considered crucial by refugee parentsD. refugee men are often displaced as primary income earners in their families15. The author’s point about the problematic long-term outlook for refugee women is made primarily throughA. personal recollectionB. historical discussionC. case study analysisD. informed speculationPart IV. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices markedA, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and write the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.I’ve been attempting to learn French for a while now, and it’s a slow process. It’s all much harder this time around than it was to learn English, my first language. All this effort made me wonder if there were some tricks to learning a foreign language that I’d been missing. It turns out that it’s just a tricky thing to do once you’re an adult.Learning language is something we’re born to do. It’s an instinct we have, which is proven, as one research paper says. To believe that special biological adaptations are a requirement, it is enough to notice that all the children but none of the dogs and cats in the house acquire language. As children, we learn to think, learn to communicate and intuitively pick up an understanding of grammar rules in our mother tongue, or native language. From then on, we learn all new languages in relation to the one we first knew — the one that we used to understand the world around us for the first time ever. When it comes to learning a second language, adults are at a disadvantage. One theory of why learning a foreign language is so hard for adults focuses on the process we go through to do so. Robert Bley-Vroman explains in Linguistic Perspectives on Second Language Acquisition that adults approach learning a new language with an adult problem-solving process, rather than in the same way a child develops language for the first time.Although this means adults generally progress through the early stages of learning a language faster than children, people who are exposed to a foreign language first during childhood usually achieve a higher proficiency than those who start out as adults. There’s still hope, though. A study of secondary language pronunciation found that some learners who started as adults scored as well as native speakers. It’s also been shown that motivation to learn can improve proficiency, so if you reallywant to learn a language, it’s not necessarily too late.21. What did the author realize from his experience of learning French?A. Learning French is difficult for an adult.B. French is as difficult as English for him.C. He has missed the tips on learning French.D. It demands great efforts to learn a language.22. How are we influenced by the way we learned our mother tongue?A. We prefer to learn by understanding the grammar rules first.B. We tend to attach more importance to listening and speaking.C. We are inclined to learn all other new languages in relation to it.D. We may unconsciously think it is the best way to learn languages.23. According to Robert Bley-Vroman, how do adults approach a new language?A. They tend to choose a problem-solving process.B. They try to be exposed to a foreign environment.C. They follow the way a child learns a language.D. They start by taking language proficiency practices.24. According to the passage, what is the good news for adult learners?A. They can achieve a higher proficiency than most children.B. They can speak the language as good as the native speakers.C. They can master a foreign language once they are motivated.D. They can improve proficiency by imitating the way kids learn.25. What is the passage mainly about?A. The differences between child learners and adult learners.B. The possible difficulties language learners may come across.C. The common ways people choose to learn a foreign language.D. The disadvantages of and hopes for an adult language learner.Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage. Some pessimistic experts feel that the automobile is bound to fall into disuse. They see a day in the not-too-distant future when all autos will be abandoned and allowed to rust. Other authorities, however, think the auto is here to stay. They hold that the car will remain a leading means of urban travel in the foreseeable future. The motorcar will undoubtedly change significantly over the next 30 years. It should become smaller, safer, and more economical, and should not be powered by the gasoline engine. The car of thefuture should be far more pollution-free than present types.Regardless of its power source, the auto in the future will still be the main problem in urban traffic congestion. One proposed solution to this problem is the automated highway system. When the auto enters the highway system, a retractable (可伸缩的) arm will drop from the auto and make contact with a rail, which is similar to those powering subway trains electrically. Once attached to the rail, the car will become electrically powered from the system, and control of the vehicle will pass to a central computer. The computer will then monitor all of the car’s movements. The driver will use a telephone to dial instructions about his destination into the system. The computer will calculate the best route, and reserve space for the car all the way to the correct exit from the highway. The driver will then be free to relax and wait for the buzzer (蜂鸣器) that will warn him of his coming exit. It is estimated that an automated highway will be able to handle 10,000 vehicles per hour, compared with the 1,500 to 2,000 vehicles that can be carried by a present-day highway.26. One significant improvement in the future car will probably be ________.A. its driving systemB. its power sourceC. its monitoring systemD. its seating capacity27. What is the author’s main concern?A. How to render automobiles pollution-free.B. How to make smaller and safer automobiles.C. How to develop an automated subway system.D. How to solve the problem of traffic jams.28. What provides autos with electric power in an automated highway system?A. A rail.B. An engine.C. A retractable arm.D. A computer controller.29. In an automated highway system, all the driver needs to do is ________.A. keep in the right laneB. wait to arrive at his destinationC. keep in constant touch with the computer centerD. inform the system of his destination by phone30. What is the author’s attitude toward the future of autos?A. Enthusiastic.B. Optimistic.C. Pessimistic.D. Cautious.Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage. We all know that DNA has the ability to identify individuals but, because itis inherited, there are also regions of the DNA strand which can relate an individual to his or her family (immediate and extended), tribal group and even an entire population. Molecular Genealogy (宗谱学) can use this unique identification provided by the genetic markers to link people together into family trees.Pedigrees(家谱) based on such genetic markers can mean a breakthrough for family trees where information is incomplete or missing due to adoption, illegitimacy or lack of records. There are many communities and populations which have lost precious records due to tragic events such as the fire in the Irish courts during Civil War in 1921 or American slaves for whom many records were never kept in the first place. The main objective of the Molecular Genealogy Research Group is to build a database containing over 100,000 DNA samples from individuals all over the word. These individuals will have provided a pedigree chart of at least four generations and a small blood sample. Once the database has enough samples to represent the world genetic make-up, it will eventually help in solving may issues regarding genealogies that could not be done by relying only on traditional written records.Theoretically, any individual will someday be able to trace his or her family origins through this database. In the meantime, as the database is being created, molecular genealogy can already verify possible or suspected relationships between individuals. “For example, if two men sharing the same last name believe that they are related, but no written record proves this relationship, we can verify this possibility by collecting a sample of DNA from both and looking for common markers( in this case we can look primarily at the Y chromosome(染色体) ,” explains Ugo Perego, a member of the BYU Molecular Genealogy research team.31. If two men suspected for some reason they have a common ancestor,__________.A. we can decide according to their family treeB. we can find the truth from their genetic markersC. we can compare the differences in their Y chromosomeD. we can look for written records to prove their relationship32. People in a large area may possess the same DNA thread because__________.A. DNA is characteristic of a regionB. they are beyond doubt of common ancestryC. DNA strand has the ability to identify individualsD. their unique identification can be provided via DNA33. Which of the following CANNOT be inferred from the passage?A. We are a walking, living, breathing record of our ancestors.B. Many American slaves did not know who their ancestors were.C. An adopted child generally lacks enough information to prove his identity.D. Molecular Genealogy can be used to prove a relationship between individuals.34. The Molecular Genealogy Research Group is building a database for the purpose of__________.A. offering assistance in working out genealogy-related problemsB. solving many issues without relying on traditional written recordsC. providing a pedigree chart of at least four generations in the worldD. confirming the assumption that all individuals are of the same origin35. The possible research of family trees is based on the fact that__________.A. genetics has achieved a breakthroughB. genetic information contained in DNA can be revealed nowC. each individual carries a unique record of who he is and how he is related to othersD. we can use DNA to prove how distant an individual is to a family, a group or a populationQuestions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.Stone tools, animal bones and an incised mammoth tusk found in Russia’s frigidfar north have provided what archaeologists say is the first evidence that modern humans or Neanderthals lived in the Arctic more than 30,000 years ago, at least 15,000 years earlier than previously thought.A team of Russian and Norwegian archaeologists, describing the discovery in today’s issue of the journal Nature, said the campsite, at Mamontovaya Kurya, on the Ura River at the Arctic Circle, was the “oldest documented evidence for human resence at this high latitude.” Digging in the bed of an old river channel close to the Ural Mountains, the team uncovered 123 mammal bones, including horse, reindeer and wolf. “The most important find,” they said, was a four-foot mammoth tusk with grooves made by chopping with a sharp stone edge, “unequivocally the work of humans.”The tusk was carbon-dated at about 36,600 years old. Plant remains found among the artifacts were dated at 30,000 to 31,000 years.Other archaeologists said the analysis appeared to be sound. But they cautioned that it was difficult, when dealing with riverbed deposits, to be sure that artifacts had not become jumbled out of their true place, and thus time, in the geologic layers. They questioned whether the discoverers could reliably conclude that the stone tools were in fact contemporary with the bones. But in a commentary accompanying the article, Dr. John A. J. Gowlett of the University of Liverpool in England wrote, “Although there are questions to be answered, the artifacts illustrate both the capacity of early humans to do the unexpected, and the value of archaeologists’researching in unlikely areas.”The discoverers said they could not determine from the few stone artifacts whether the site was occupied by Neanderthals, hominids who by then had a long history as hunters in Europe and western Asia, or some of the first anatomically modern humans to reach Europe. In any case, other archaeologists said, the findings could be significant. If these toolmakers were Neanderthals, the findings suggested that these human relatives, who became extinct after 30,000 years ago, were more capable and adaptable than they are generally given credit for. Living in the Arctic climate presumably required higher levels of technology and social organization. If they were modern humans, then the surprise is that they had penetrated sofar north in such a short time. The Eastern dragon, called long in China, may seem like a completely different creature from the Western dragon. Their behavior, their symbolism, and what they mean to society are quite different. (41) The East seems to value dragons for their magic and beauty and holds them in high respect. However, it is a quite different case in the West where dragons are historically viewed as monsters. In Chinese culture, the dragon is a symbol of virtue. (42) Unlike Western dragons, oriental dragons are usually seen as kind and benevolent. Dragons have long been a symbol in Chinese folklore and art. Temples and shrines have been built to honor them. In fact, the Chinese are sometimes referred to as “the descendants of the dragon”.Through the symbol of the dragon, many Chinese see qualities which they desire and value such as heroism, wisdom and power. The dragon is a protector. Legend has it that the dragon controls the rain, rivers, lakes and the seas; they can protect the innocent and give them safety. In real life, the Chinese have the Year of the Dragon. It is said that anyone born in this year will be healthy, wealthy and wise.(43) Historically, the dragon was associated with the emperor of China and used asa symbol to represent imperial power. In order to emphasize the association, emperors wore robes with a dragon design, sat on a throne with carved dragons, and had his palace decorated with dragon of various patterns.Dragon idioms are common in China. Chinese idioms are usually made up of four Chinese characters, called chengyu. (44) Many Westerners are familiar with the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, but do not know that this movie title is an idiom meaning “talents in hiding”.Likewise, the Chinese may include the character for dragon (“龙”) when naming a child. The character appears in the names of two famous movie stars that all Westerners know, Jackie Chan (Chenglong, meaning “becoming a dragon”) and Bruce Lee (Li Xiaolong, implying a “small dragon”).(45) At special festivals, especially the Dragon Boat Festival, also called Duanwu Festival, dragon boat races play an important part. Typically, these are boats paddled by a team of up to 20 paddlers with a drummer and a steersman. The boats are generally with decorative dragon heads and tails. MEMO
TO:Caferoma’s Managing Director,Mario Cumino
Form: Huang Weijun
Date: 18 April
Subject: My opinion about how to solve the problems
We have realized the problems our company faced and we have talked a lot about it at the meeting. Now I’d like to talk about my opinion.
As far as I am concerned, there is no doubt that we should do more advertising since consumers have become less loyal to brands and there are much more competitors at present.By advertising,we can improve our brand’s reputation.
What I think the most important thing is that we should develop multiple brands and make some new products. The reasons are follow:Firstly, supermarkets have been producing, under their own label, similar products to Caferoma at much lower prices. As a result, our old product lost competitive power. So we can make some new product at low pricen to expand our maket share.Secondly, consumer surveys show that our brand no longer conveys a feeling of excitement and enthusiasm. If we can develop multiple brands,we may change this situation.
However,I don’t believe that we should repositioning the product and reduce the price. We brand should focus on high quality but we can develop multipe brands to improve competitiveness.。
