Newspapers and magazines, television, and film all have an influence on how we view the roles of women and men and on how we think they should behave.Four decades ago, traditional women’s magazines such as Good Housekeeping and Family Circle talked to women as though they were children who needed to learn the basics of how to care for their families. Today, magazines do not do this. However, they still tend to define the female role in terms of homemaking and motherhood, and to offer beauty advice to help women attract men and please husbands. There are now a few less traditional magazines such as Ms. that show women in a range of roles and that cover a much wider range of topics.Television commercials have also, until recently, presented women primarily as sex objects and as housewives. Y oung sexy women were shown admiring older men who smoked a particular cigarette brand. Housewives were shown smiling joyfully about their clean bathrooms, or looking guil ty for not using the right laundry soap to wash their husband’s clothes. These days advertisers are more careful about the way they present women, and they are presented in a variety of roles. However, it is still quite common to see advertisements where beautiful young women are dressed in sexy clothes to sell cars or other products. One study also found that the changes are mainly on nighttime television, with daytime commercials still tending to portray women doing household chores.Prime-time television programs also often used to stereotype women. In past decades, women were usually portrayed as lovers, as mothers, or as weak, passive girlfriends of powerful, effective men. Today’s TV programs are somewhat different. Women are more likely to be presented as successful and able to support themselves and their families, but the traditional stereotypes of women are still there. Even when women are depicted as career women, the storylines suggest that they should be sexy as well.问题1. The best title for this passage is _______A. Gender Roles in the MediaB. However, the first part of the 20th century was very much a one way flow of information as the developments in Western medicine flooded into China. In Western countries Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) was relatively unknown until President Nixon’s groundbreaking visit to China in 1971 and the accounts of the use of acupuncture for pain control appeared in the New Y ork Times.Since then there has been a rapid growth in the awareness and use of TCM in Western countries. Universities around the world are now offering degrees in TCM. In the UK there are several thousand practitioners offering herbal medicines, acupuncture and other tec hniques within a Western clinical setting. There are several reasons for this rapid rise in popularity. The initial appeal of the foreign culture was replaced by research reports indicating the effectiveness of TCM treatments. The groundbreaking studies on the successful use of Chinese herbal medicines in the treatment of eczema at Great Ormond Street Hospital hit the national headlines and established medical journals.TCM is now frequently used for this and many other forms of skin disease. Alongs ide the evidence supporting the use of TCM there was also a growing sense of dissatisfaction with the limitations of modern medical treatment. The lack of a holistic perspective, short consultation times and the side effects of pharmaceutical drugs have indicated that more and more people are seeking additional forms of health care. In recent years improved standards of education and professional organization, and a new emphasis on quality control have indicated that now there is a network of well qualified TCM practitioners offering the benefits of this ancient tradition to the Western public.6. What does the passage say about the relationship between Eastern and Western medical system?A. There has been no exchange between the two systems until recently.B. Reading ComprehensionPassage OneThere are three kinds of goals: short-term, medium-range and long-term goals.Short-term goals are those that usually deal with current activities, which we can apply on a daily basis. Such goals can be achieved in a week or less, or two weeks, or possibly, months. It should be remembered that just as a building is no stronger than its foundation, long-term goals cannot amount to very much without the achievement of solid short-term goals. Upon completing our short-term goals, we should date the occasion and then add new short-term goals that will build on those that have been completed. The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short-term goals. They might deal with just one term of school or the entire school year, or they could even extend for several years. Any time you move a step at a time, you should never allow yourself to become discouraged or overwhelmed. As you complete each step, you will enforce the belief in your ability to grow and succeed. And as your list of completion dates grow, your motivation and desire will increase.Long-term goals may be related to our dreams of the future. They might cover five years or more. Life is not a static thing. We should never allow a long-term goal to limit us or our course of action.(221 words) 31. Our long-term goals mean a lot ____________.( B)A. But the cultures of the two countries sometimes seem to be miles apart.Last Thursday Britain and France celebrated the 100th anniversary(周年纪念)of the signing of a friendship agreement called the Entente Cordiality. The agreement marked a new beginning for the countries following centuries of wars and love-hate partnership. But their relationship has been ups and downs over the past century. Just last year, there were fierce disagreements over the Iraq war-which British Prime Minister Tony Blair supported despite French President Jacques Chirac spea king out against it. This discomfort is expressed in Blair and Chirac’s body language at international meetings. While the French leader often greets German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder with a hug(拥抱), Blair just receives a handshake. However, some political experts say the war in Iraq could in fact have helped ties. The history of divisions may well be because of the very different ways in which the two sides see the world. But this doesn’t stop 12 million Britons taking holidays in France each year. Howev er, only 3 million French come in the opposite direction. Surveys(调查)show that most French people feel closer to the Germans than they do to the British. And the research carried out in Britain has found that only a third of the population believes the French can be trusted. Perhaps this bad feeling comes because the British dislike France’s close relationship with Germany, or because the French are not happy with Britain’s close links with the US.Whatever the answer is, as both sides celebrate 100 years o f ―doubtful friendship‖, they are at least able to make jokes about each other. Here’s one: What’s the best thing about Britain’s relationship with France? The English Channel.36. For centuries, the relationship between Britain and France is ____________. (D)A. friendlyB. impoliteC. brotherlyD. a mixture of love and hate37. The war in Iraq does ____________ to the relationship between France and Britain. (D)A. goodB. harmC. neither good nor harmD. both good and harm38. The British are not so friendly to __( A)______ and the French are not so friendly to _ ( A)_____.A. Germany; AmericaB. We encourage all students to volunteer for at least one community activity before they graduate. A new community program called ―One On One‖ helps elementary students who’ve fallen behind. You can choose to help a child with math, English, or both. Half-hour lessons are fine, so you could do a half hour of each subject two days a week.Professor Dodge will act as a mentor to the tutors —he’ll be available to h elp you with lesson plans or to offer suggestions for activities. He has office hours every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. You can sign up for the program with him and begin the tutoring next week.I’m sure you’ll enjoy this community service … and you’ll gain valuable experience at the same time. It looks good on your resume, too, showing that you’ve had experience with children and that you care about your community. If you’d like to sign up, or if you have any questions, stop by Professor Dodge’s office this week. (220 words)41. What is the purpose of the talk? ____________( B)A. Even a small flat in London without a garden costs quite a lot to rent. With the same money, one can get a little house in the country with a garden of one’s own. Then, in the country one can really get away from the noise and hurry of busy working lives. Even though one has to get up earlier and spend more time in trains or buses, one can sleep better at night and during weekends and on summer evenings, one can enjoy the fresh, clean air of the country. If one likes gardens, one can spend one’s free time digging, planting, watering an d doing the hundred and one other jobs which are needed in a garden. Then, when the flowers and vegetables come up, one has got the reward together with those who have shared the secret of Nature. Some people, however, take no interest in country things: for them, happiness lies in the town, with its cinemas and theatres, beautiful shops and busy streets, dance-halls and restaurants. Such people would feel that their life was not worth living if they had to live it outside London. An occasional walk in one of the parks and a fortnight’s (two weeks) visit to the sea every summer is all the country they want: the rest they are quite prepared to leave to those who are glad to get away from London every night. The book The Origin of Species by Charles Darwin is probably one of the most famous books ever written by a scientist. Yet it is a book which the writer did not want to publish; he only agreed to make his theory known to the public when he was forced to by his friends. In 1831, the British Government sent a ship called Beagle to South America to make maps of the coast. At that time, Darwin w as a young man in his twenties who had studied science in Edinburgh and Cambridge. Through a friend, he was offered the job of studying the plants and animals of the different countries that the Beagle was to visit. Darwin’s father told him not to go, an d the captain of the Beagle said that he did not like the shape of Darwin’s nose; but that did not stop him, and in December of that year, Darwin sailed for South America. He spent five years on the ship, collecting many samples and writing down his obs ervations about the living things he found. When he returned to England, he tried to work out a theory to explain what he had observed. It was clear that many species w ere connected with each other in some way, without being exactly the same. Why was this? Two years after his return, he deve loped a theory: only the strongest or the cleverest could survive difficult conditions. Over time, the species changes slowly to fi t the environment. Different environments produce different species.(17.5分)

A typical course consists of three classes per weekfor fifteen weeks. While attending a university a student will probably attend four or fivecourses during each semester. Normally a student would expect to take four yearsattending two semesters each year. It is possible to spread the period of work for thedegree course, though this is not in fact done as a regular practice. For every course that he follows a student is given a grade, which is recorded, and therecord is available for the student to show to prospective employers. All this is imposespressure from the strain of work, but in spite of this some students still find time for greatactivity in student affairs. Elections to positions in student organizations arouse muchenthusiasm. The effective work of maintaining discipline is usually performed exampleby cheating, has to appear before a student court. With the enormous numbers of students, the operation of the systemdoes involve a certain amount of activity. It is necessary to give you a bloodtransfusion because you lost a great deal of blood in the accident. However, special careshould be taken in selecting new blood for you. If the blood is too different from yourown , the transfusion could kill you. There are four basic types of blood: A, B, AB, and O. A simple test can indicate aperson’s blood type, which, like hair and height, is inherited from parents.Because of substances contained in each type, the four groups must be transfusedcarefully. Basically, A and B cannot be mixed. A and B cannot receive AB, but AB mayreceive A or B. O can give to any other group; hence it is often called the universal donor. For the opposite reason, AB is sometimes called the universal recipient. However, because so many reactions can occur in transfusions, patients usually receive only salt orplasma(liquid)until their blood can be matched as exactly as possible in the blood bank ofa hospital. In his way, it is possible to avoid any bad reactions to the transfusion. There is a relationship between your blood type and your nationality. AmongEuropeans and people of European ancestry, about 42 percent have type A while 45percent have type O. The rarest is type AB. Other races have different percentages. Forexample, some American Indian groups have nearly 100 percent type O.16.A good title for this passage is___C_______A) Getting Blood and Plasma B)Special Blood TypesC) Human Blood TypesD)The Blood Bank of a Hospital17. After 10 seasons wearing the No. 8 on his back, Kobe Bryant will become No 24 nextseason. The reason for the surprising decision by the Los Angeles Lakers super guard last week has become a hot topic for debate.Bryant wore No at when he was in early high school, but he changed to No 33 in his senior year. He switched to No 8 when he was selected by the Lakers in 1996, and has been not changed since.Bryant has refused to explain the decision until the end of the play-offs. So guessing Bryant’s motive has become a popular game among NBA fans and newspaper columnists. There are all kinds of speculations. Many say that Bryant wants to leave the past behind and have a fresh start. He has often been criticized for playing to benefit himself and not the team as a whole. Others say that he may be trying to compare himself to Michael Jordan. Jordan was famous for his No 23 jersey. Some, such as NBC Sport columnist Michael Ventre, argue that it is ―all about money‖. Bryant will make more money by selling new jersey to his fans. Some speculations are more about fun. For example, there is an opinion that Kobe is actually just a dihard fan of the popular TV drama ―24‖.All this talk has turned the number changed into a major issue. It seems that there is a lot of fuss over something that should be pretty simple.Jersey numbers have their own special significance in American sports, especiallybasketball. Players choose their number when they join a team and they usually stick with that number for the rest of their career. When a great player retires, his team will honor him by retiring his number. To some extent, the jersey is the player, and the player is jersey. Thus, when you see the famous No 23 for the Chicago Bulls, you immediately think about Michael Jordan. A No 32 Miami Heats jersey recalls the image of Shaquille O’ Neal, and the Houston rockets’ No 11 belongs only to Yao Ming.Lots of stories are behind players’ jersey number selections. Jordan said that he choose No 23 because it was roughly half of 45. Jordan’s elder brother wore the No 45 in college.Yao Ming once revealed that the No 11 stands for two people in love – meaning him and his girlfriend Ye Li.(17.5分)16.1 How long has Bryant Wore No 8?(3.5分)参考答案:B解题思路:无16.2 分16.3 What does the number Yao Ming chose stand for?(3.5分)16.4 Which of the following is NOT a speculation about Bryant’s motive to change hisnumber?(3.5分)16.5 Why did Jordan choose No 23?(3.5分)17. Education is not an end, but a means to an end. In other words, we do not educatechildren only for the purpose of educating them. Our purpose is to fit them for life.In some modem countries it has for some time been fashionable to think that by free education for all — one can solve all the problems of society and build a perfect nation. But we can already see that free education for all is not enough; we find in such countriesa far larger number of people with university degree; they refuse to do what they think―low‖ work; and, in fact, manual wo rk is thought to be dirty and shameful in suchcountries. But we have only to think a moment to understand that the work of acompletely uneducated farmer is far more important than that of a professor; we can live without education, but we die if we have no food. If no one cleaned our streets and took the rubbish away from our houses, we should get terrible diseases in our towns. In fact, when we say that all of us must be educated to fit us for life, it means that we must be educated in such a way that, firstly, each of us can do whatever work suited to his brains and ability and, secondly, that we can realize that all jobs are necessary to society, and that is very bad to be ashamed of one’s work. She was widely believed to be his driving force. At university and beyond he did well. He worked for various firms and was a communist party member. By 1986 he was head of Sebia’s Committer. B ut still he had not yet really been noticed. It was Kosovo that gave him his chance. An autonomous province of Serbia, Kosovo was home to an Albanian majority and a Serbian minority. In 1989, he was sent there to calm fears of Serbians who felt they were discriminated against. But instead he played the nationalist card and became their champion. In so doing, he changed into a ruthless and determined man. At home with Mira he plotted the downfall of his political enemies.Conspiring with the director of Serbian TV, he mounted a modern media campaign which aimed to get him the most power in the country. He was elected Serbian president in 1990. In 1997, he became president of Yugoslavia. The rest of the story is well-known: his nationalist card caused Yugoslav ia’s other ethnic groups to fight for their own rights, power and lands. Yugoslavia broke up when four of the six republics declared independence in 1991. war started and lasted for years and millions died. Then Western counties intervened. NATO bombed Yugoslavia, and he eventually stepped down as state leader in 2000.Soon after this, Serbia’s new government, led by Zoran Djindjic, arrested him and sent him to face justice at the Yugoslav was crimes tribunal in the Hague. “fisherman”的正确复数形式是“fishermen”。

That´s the very thing I´ve been looking for.

动词“see”可以组成“seesb. do”和“see sb. doing”这两种结构。
