Returning to a book you've read many times can feel like drinks with an old friend. There's a welcome familarity ﹣but also sometimes a slight suspicion that time has changed you both, and thus the relationship. But books don't change, people do.And that's what makes the act of rereading so rich and transformative. The beauty of rereading lies in the idea that our bond with the work is based on our present mental register. It's true, the older I get, the more I feel time has wings. But with reading, it's all about the present. It's about the now and what one contributes to the now, because reading is a give and take between author and reader. Each has to pull their own weight. There are three books I reread annually. The first, which I take to reading every spring, is Ernest Hemingway'sA Moveable Feast.Published in 1964, it's his classic memoir of 1920s Paris. The language is almost intoxicating(令人陶醉的), an aging writer looking back on an ambitious yet simpler time.Another is Annie Dillard's Holy the Firm, her poetic 1975 ramble(随笔)about everything and nothing. The third book is Julio Cortázar's Save Twilight: Selected Poems, because poetry. And because Cortázar. While I tend to buy a lot of books, these three were given to me as gifts, which might add to the meaning I attach to them. But I imagine that, while money is indeed wonderful and necessary, rereading an author's work is the highest________ a reader can pay them. The best books are the ones that open further as time passes. But remember, it's you that has to grow and read and reread in order to better understand your friends.(1)Why does the author like rereading?________A.It evaluates the writer﹣reader relationship.B.It's a window to a whole new world.C.It's a substitute for drinking with a friend.D.It extends the understanding of oneself..(2)What do we know about the book A Moveable Feast?________A.It's a brief account of a trip.B.It's about Hemingway's life as a young man.C.It's a record of a historic event.D.It's about Hemingway's friends in Paris..(3)What does the underlined word "currency" in paragraph 4 refer to?________A.Debt.B.Reward.C.Allowance.D.Face value..(4)What can we infer about the author from the text?________A.He loves poetry.B.He's an editor.C.He's very ambitious.D.He teaches reading.3. Race walking shares many fitness benefits with running, research shows, while most likely contributing to fewer injuries. It does, however, have its own problem.Race walkers are conditioned athletes. The longest track and field event at the Summer Olympics is the 50﹣kilometer race walk, which is about five miles longer than the marathon. But the sport's rules require that a race walker's knees stay straight through most of the leg swing and one foot remain in contact(接触)with the ground at all times. It's this strange form that makes race walking such an attractiveactivity, however, says Jaclyn Norberg, an assistant professor of exercise science at Salem State University in Salem, Mass.Like running, race walking is physically demanding, she says.According to most calculations, race walkers moving at a pace of six miles per hour would burn about 800 calories(卡路里)per hour, which is approximately twice as many as they would burn walking, although fewer than running, which would probably burn about 1, 000 or more calories per hour. However, race walking does not pound the body as much as running does, Dr. Norberg says.According to her research, runners hit the ground with as much as four times their body weight per step, while race walkers, who do not leave the ground, create only about 1.4 times their body weight with each step.As a result, she says, some of the injuries associated with running, such as runner's knee, are uncommon among race walkers. But the sport's strange form does place considerable stress on the ankles and hips, so people with a history of such injuries might want to be cautious in adopting the sport. In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first consult a coach or experienced racer to learn proper technique, she says.It takes some practice.(1)Why are race walkers conditioned athletes?________A.They must run long distances.B.They are qualified for the marathon.C.They have to follow special rules.D.They are good at swinging their legs..(2)What advantage does race walking have over running?________A.It's more popular at the Olympics.B.It's less challenging physically.C.It's more effective in body building.D.It's less likely to cause knee injuries..(3)What is Dr. Norberg's suggestion for someone trying race walking?________A.Getting experts' opinions.B.Having a medical checkup.C.Hiring an experienced coach.D.Doing regular exercises..(4)Which word best describes the author's attitude to race walking?________A.Skeptical.B.Objective.C.Tolerant.D.Conservative.4. The connection between people and plants has long been the subject of scientific research.Recent studies have found positive effects.A study conducted in Youngstown, Ohio, for example, discovered that greener areas of the city experienced less crime. In another, employees were shown to be 15% more productive when their workplaces were decorated with houseplants. The engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT) have taken it a step further ﹣ changing the actual composition of plants in order to get them to perform diverse, even unusual functions. These include plants that have sensors printed onto their leaves to show when they're short of water and a plant that can detect harmful chemicals in groundwater."We're thinking about how we can engineer plants to replace functions of the things that we use every day, " explained Michael Strano, a professor of chemical engineering at MIT.One of his latest projects has been to make plants glow(发光) in experiments using some common vegetables.Strano's team found that they could create a faint light for three ﹣and﹣a﹣half hours. The light, about one﹣thousandth of the amount needed to read by, is just a start. The technology, Strano said, could one day be used to light the rooms or even to turn trees into self﹣powered street lamps. In the future, the team hopes to develop a version of the technology that can be sprayed onto plant leaves in a on﹣off treatment that would last the plant's lifetime. The engineers are also trying to develop an on and off "switch" where the glow would fade when exposed to daylight.Lighting accounts for about 7% of the total electricity consumed in the US.Since lighting is often far removed from the power source(电源)﹣ such as the distance from a power plant to street lamps on a remote highway ﹣ a lot of energy is lost during transmission(传输).Glowing plants could reduce this distance and therefore help save energy.(1)What is the first paragraph mainly about?________A.A new study of different plants.B.A big fall in crime rates.C.Employees from various workplaces.D.Benefits from green plants..(2)What is the function of the sensors printed on plant leaves by MIT engineers?________A.To detect plants' lack of water.B.To change compositions of plants.C.To make the life of plants longer.D.To test chemicals in plants..(3)What can we expect of the glowing plants in the future?________A.They will speed up energy production.B.They may transmit electricity to the home.C.They might help reduce energy consumption.D.They could take the place of power plants..(4)Which of the following can be the best title for the text?________A.Can we grow more glowing plants?B.How do we live with glowing plants?C.Could glowing plants replace lamps?D.How are glowing plants made pollution﹣free?.第二节(满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.)5.A Few Tips for Self﹣AcceptanceWe all want it …to accept and love ourselves. But at times it seems too difficult and too far out of reach.(1)_______Here's a handful of ways that will set you in the right direction.●(2)_______Do not follow the people who make you feel not﹣good﹣enough. Why do you follow them? Are you hoping that eventually you will feel empowered because your life is better than theirs?Know that your life is your own;you are the only you in this world.●Forgive yourself for mistakes that you have made.We are often ashamed of our shortcomings, our mistakes and our failures.(3)_______ You will make mistakes, time and time again.Rather than getting caught up in how you could have done better, why not offer yourself a compassionate (有同情心) response?"That didn't go as planned. But,I tried my best."●Recognize all of your strengths.Write them down in a journal.Begin to train your brain to look at strength before weakness.List all of your accomplishments and achievements. You have a job, earned your degree, and you got out of bed today.(4)_______●Now that you've listed your strengths, list your imperfections.Turn the page in your journal.Put into words why you feel unworthy, why you don't feel good enough. Now,read these words back to yourself.(5)_______Turn to a page in your journal to your list of strengths and achievements.See how awesome you are?A.Feeling upset again?B.Where do you start?C.Nothing is too small to celebrate.D.Remember, you are only human.E.Set an intention for self﹣acceptance.F.Stop comparing yourself with others.G.When does the comparison game start?第三部分英语知识运用(共两节)第一节完形填空(每小题1.5分,满分30分)阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项.)6. Once when I returned in tears from a Saturday baseball game, Steve took time to ask me what had happened. When I explained that my baseball had soared through Mrs. Holt' s basement window, breaking the glass with a crash, Steve encouraged me to confess to it. After all, I should have been playing in the park and not in the path between buildings. Although my knees trembled as I explained to Mrs. Holt, I offered to pay for the window from my pocket money if she would return my ball. I also learned from Steve that personal property (财产)is a sacred thing. After I found a shiny silver pen in my fifth-grade classroom, I wanted to keep it, but Steve explained that it might be important to someone else. I returned the pen to my teacher, Mrs. David, and she praised me.Yet of all the instructions Steve gave me, his respect for life is the most vivid in my mind. When I was twelve I killed an old brown sparrow in the yard with a BB gun. Excited with my accuracy, I screamed at Steve to come and take a look. I shall never forget the way he stood for a long moment and stared at the bird on the ground. Then in a dead, quiet voice, he asked, "Did it hurt you first, Mark?" I didn' t know what to answer. The theme: The main theme is a teenage search of self-discovery, in this case the search for a mother from whom the hero was separated at an early age. Its other concerns are love, getting on with others, being persistent and courageous and trying to deal with doubts, troubles and worries. As the book moves to a close, James’ swimming coach says to him: “You are not like a kid obeying instructions any more. You are diving like a young man who knows where he is going.”The characters: James is the hero of the story. He is a championship diver, and has a comfortable life with his foster parents (养父母). With help from his geography teacher, James sets out for the remote country village where his mother might be found. James has painful, challenging, but also humorous and happy travels. The mother he finally meets, Anne, has a minor yet powerful voice in the novel. He comes to understand why she left him at a stranger’s door fifteen years before. Jet planes fly people from one end of the earth to the other, allowing them a freedom of movement undreamt of a hundred years ago.Yet some people wonder if the revolution in travel has gone too far. A price has been paid, they say, for the conquest (征服) of time and distance. Travel is something to be enjoyed, not endured (忍受). The boat offers leisure and time enough to appreciate the ever-changing sights and sounds of a journey. A journey by train also has a special charm about it. Lakes and forests and wild, open plains sweeping past your carriage window create a grand view in which time and distance mean nothing. On board a plane, however, there is just the blank blue of the sky filling the narrow window of the airplane. The soft lighting, in-flight films and gentle music make up the only world you know, and the hours progress slowly. Then there is the time spent being “processed” at a modern airport. People are conveyed like robots along walkways; baggage is weighed, tickets produced, examined and produced yet again before the passengers move to another waiting area. Journeys by rail and sea take longer, yes, but the hours devoted to being “processed” at departure and arrival in airports are luckily absent. No wonder, then, t hat the modern high-speed trains are winning back passengers from the airlines.Man, however, is now a world traveler and cannot turn his back on the airplane. The working lives of too many people depend upon it; whole new industries have been built around its design and operation. The holiday maker, too, with limited time to spend, patiently endures the busy airports and limited space of the flight to gain those extra hours and even days, relaxing in the sun. speed controls people’s lives; time saved, in work or play, is the important thing—or so we are told. Perhaps those first horsemen, riding free across the wild, open plains, were enjoying a better world than the one we know today. They could travel at will, and the clock was not their master.【1】What does the writer try to express in Paragraph 1?A.Travel by plane has speeded up the growth of villages.B.The speed of modern travel has made distances relatively short.C.The freedom of movement has helped people realize their dreams.D.Man has been fond of traveling rather than staying in one place.【2】How does the writer support the underlined statement in Paragraph 2?A.By giving instructions.B.By analyzing cause and effect.C.By following the order of time.D.By giving examples.【3】According to Paragraph 3, passengers are turning back to modern high-speed trains because______.A.they pay less for the ticketsB.they feel safer during the travelC.they can enjoy higher speed of travelD.they don’t have to waste time being “processed”【4】What does the last sentence of the passage mean?A.They could enjoy free and relaxing travel.B.They needed the clock to tell the time.C.They preferred traveling on horseback.D.They could travel with their master.【5】What is the main idea of the passage?A.Air travel benefits people and industries.B.Train Travel has some advantages over air travel.C.Great changes have taken place in modern travel.D.The high speed of air travel is gained at a cost.5.阅读下面短文并回答问题[1]Stamp collectors usually collect stamps only from certain countries or regions. The traditional method of stamp collecting is to organize stamp collection according to the issue dates.[2]Of course, there are many ____________. You can collect stamps relating to a particular theme. For example, sport lovers may choose the Olympic theme. They try their best to find Olympic stamps issued by various parts of the world every four years. Some of them may want to concentrate on even more specific sport activities like ball games, gymnasium, swimming, etc.[3]If you like astronomy, you may be keen on collecting stamps describing the stars, planets, spacecraft, spacemen, etc. once you have fixed the topic, you no longer need to bother about stamps other than the theme you selected. Then, you can put all your effort to collect the stamps around it.[4]China issues zodiac animal stamps (十二生肖邮票) every year to celebrate the Lunar New Year. They areex tremely popular and a lot of collectors wait patiently for 12 years to collect a full set of them. Hong Kong’s Lunar New Year special stamp series began in 2000 with the Year of Dragon and the twelfth and final set was issued in 2011, the Year of Rabbit. Recently some Western countries have issued zodiac animal stamps, which attract a lot of attention as well.[5]You may choose any theme you like. However, you should bear in mind an essential point. The topic you choose should not be too narrow. Otherwise, it is very difficult to accumulate stamps around the topic. You will be depressed and even lose your interest in collecting stamps.[6]Collecting stamps with themes is especially popular among teenagers because there is a wide range of choices for them. The main challenge is how you organize and expand your collection around your theme.【1】What is the main idea of the passage? (no more than 5 words)___________________________________________________________________________【2】Fill in the blanks in Paragraph 2 with proper words.(no more than 5 words)Of course, there are many ____________________________________________.【3】What should you do if you want to collect a full set of zodiac animal stamps? When the Keesling family of Indiana was about to be killed by carbon monoxide, their cat clawed at the wife Cathy’s hair until she woke up and called for help.No one could explain their timely heroics. Both pets were rescued by their owners in infancy---Toby as a 4-week-old thrown into a garbage bin to die, and Winnie as a week-old orphan hiding under a barn, so helpless that Cathy’s husband, Eric, had to feed her milk with an eyedropper. As the Keeslings recalled it, a gas-driven pump being used broke down, spreading carbon monoxide through the house. By the time Winnie went to rescue, the couple’s 14-year-old son was already unconscious. “Winnie jumped on the bed and was clawing at me, with a kind of angry sound,” Cathy Keesling said. The state police responding to her 911 call said the family was only minutes from death, judging by the amount of poisonous gas in the house.Amy Paul’s husband was at his job when she took a midday break from ma king jewelry and bit into an apple. “Normally I peel them, but I read in Good Housekeeping Magazine that the skin has all the nutrients, so I ate the skin, and that’s what caused me to choke,” she recalled. “I couldn’t breathe and I was in panic when Toby jumped on me. He never does that, but he did, and saved my life.”Both Toby and Winnie accompanied their owners to the awards luncheon.【1】Why did Amy Paul choke on a piece of apple?A.She was too young to care for herself.B.She had a big bite.C.The apple was too hard.D.She didn’t peel the skin as usual.【2】Winnie saved the lives of its owner’s whole family in an accident by __________.A.jumping onto its owner B.calling for helpC.clawing at Cathy’s hair D.making some strange noises【3】Which of the following has the similar meaning to the underlined word “infancy” in Paragraph 4? After immigrating from England to the USA, and an unsuccessful attempt to make a living as a farmer, he moved to Chicago, where he saw the reconstru ction of the city after the disastrous fire of 1871. In those days, it was nicknamed “the Garden City”,almost certainly the source of Howard’s name for his later building plan of towns. Returning to London, Howard developed his design in the 1880s and 1890s, drawing on ideas that were popular at the time, but creating a unique combination of designs. The nineteenth-century poor city was in many ways a terrible place, dirty and crowded; but it offered economic and social opportunities. At the same time, the British countryside was in fact equally unattractive: though it promised fresh air and nature, it suffered from agricultural depression(萧条) and it offered neither enough work and wages, nor much social life. Howard’s idea was to combine the best of town an d country in a new kind of settlement, the garden city. Howard’s idea was that a group of people should set up a company, borrowing money to establish a garden city in the depressed countryside, far enough from existing cities to make sure that the land was bought at the bottom price.Garden cities would provide a central public open space, radial avenues and connecting industries. They would be surrounded by a much larger area of green belt, also owned by the company, containing not merely farms but also some industrial institutions. As more and more people moved in, the garden city would reach its planned limit---Howard suggested 32,000 people; then, another would be started a short distance away. Thus, over time, they would develop a vast planned house collection, extending almost without limit; within it, each garden city would offer a wide range of jobs and services, but each would also be connected to the others by a rapid transportation system, thus giving all the economic and social opportunities of a big city.【1】What could be the best title for the passage?A.City and CountrysideB.A New City in ChicagoC.The Invention of the Garden CityD.A Famous Garden City in England【2】How did Howard get the name for his building plan of garden cities?A.Through his observation of the country life.B.By using the nickname of the reconstructed Chicago.C.By taking other people’s advice.D.Through the combination of different ideas.【3】According to Howard, garden cities should be built _______.A.as far as possible from existing citiesB.near cities where employment opportunities already existedC.in the countryside where agriculture was developedD.in the countryside where the land was cheap【4】The underlined phrase“drawing on ”in Paragra ph 1 probably means______.A.making use ofB.making comments onC.giving an explanation ofD.giving a description of【5】What can we learn about garden cities from the last paragraph?A.People would live and work in the same place.B.Each one would continue to become larger.C.Their number would continue to rise.D.Each one would contain a certain type of business.3.“When I grow up, I want to be...”Almost all of us have thought about, or been asked to think about, our future careers. Our answers may differ greatly. Even now your aspirations may have changed from when you were in primary school. However, it seems career options aren’t only based on personal taste. In a survey carried out by Teens, doctors, lawyers, and bankers were some of most popular careers that people said they hoped to follow. This is in line with a similar survey carried out in the UK in May 2011 by job website monster. , in which medicine was the top choice among UK teenagers aged between 13 and 17.Medicine and law are two of the oldest and best known professions. Their prestige (威望) may come from the fact that doctors and lawyers are some of the most esteemed members of society, and they make good money. Joining these high-profile professions is often seen as a sign of upward social mobility. It is equally unsurprising that banking is now one of the most common career choices. Youngsters worldwide think of banking and see the money rolling in. Wealth is increasingly becoming one of the most important indicators of a successful career. British young men list the UK tycoon Alan Sugar, Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg as their top role models “for their wealth”. Just as Chinese teenagers see being a banker as a good and fun p athway to “wealth”.However, not every child has the makings of doctor, lawyer, or banker. They are those who see fulfillment and happiness in other areas, and many teenagers dare to ink more individuality into their career options. As the Teens’ survey di scovered, a variety of unconventional jobs---coffee shop owner, gourmet(美食家),waiter at a fast food restaurant---are among teenagers’ career choices. They can be equally interesting and rewarding jobs. With every choice comes responsibility and challenge, and all career paths require specific education and training, you have to learn to balance optimism and confidence with being realistic about your particular talents and skills.【1】What is the passage mainly about?A.Careers in teenagers’ mind.B.Choosing a good job is very important.C.Teenagers in the UK like doctors.D.The choice of career needs challenge.【2】What is the top career choice among UK teenagers aged between 13 and 17 according to the article? A.Medicine B.Law C.Bank D.Education【3】According to the article, all of the following are the benefits of being a doctor except_______.A.respect from others B.the oldest professionC.high pay D.upward social mobility.【4】What do youngsters think is increasingly becoming one of the most important indicators of a successful career?A.Prestige B.Fulfillment C.Happiness D.Wealth【5】What can we learn from the last paragraph?A.According to your particular talents and skills, you can choose your favorite career.B.Specific education and training can help get a good job.C.Whatever career you choose, you should balance optimism and confidence with being realistic about your particular talents and skills.D.Responsibility is the most important when you choose a good job.4.Why are people interested in eating raw foods or whole foods? One reason is that eating these types of food reduces the risk of acid accumulation in your body.Raw and whole foods are usually digested more efficiently than cooked and refined foods. When we cook foods, we destroy the natural enzymes (酶) that are part of the food in its raw form. These enzymes were intended by nature to help us digest the food. When we consume food without these natural enzymes, our bodies either digest the food improperly or allow too many nutrients to be absorbed into the bloodstream. In both instances, the result is obesity. When too many nutrients are absorbed at once, the body grows fat. Improperly digested food moves slowly through the digestive tract, where it becomes increasingly acidic. To protect its vital organs from this acidic waste, the body changes the acid into fat and stores it safely away from the organs.Processed foods contain chemical elements, which might confuse the appetite mechanism (新陈代谢) that tells us when we’ve had enough to eat; as a result, peo ple often overeat. Processed foods also upset the digestive cycle. The body will either identify these foods as allergens and then store them safely away from the organs as fat, or the remains of undigested food will become acidic and enter the bloodstream as acid waste, which will stick to the blood vessel walls and block the passage of vital oxygen and nutrients heading for the body’s cells. The body’s metabolism becomes inactive, and the result is weight gain and obesity. The accumulation of acid in the digestive tract makes digestion increasingly inefficient. When that happens, even healthy foods can become acidic and the food allergies will become more common. To stop this vicious(恶性的)circle in its tracks, people need to consume food and supplements that will neutralize (使…中和) the acid already accumulated in body. Eating the right types of raw and whole foods can help. It’s also important to restore your enzyme balance. You need to identify and avoid the foods that cause acid accumulation and consume the foods that increase enzyme production. If you truly want to change and help your body heal itself, you need to take an active approach.【1】What is the main purpose of this passage?A.To advocate eating more raw and whole foods.B.To tell the differences between raw and processed foods.C.To inform people of the harm of processed foods.D.To warn people of the problem of obesity.【2】It can be inferred from Para. 2 that __________.A.it is essential for people to protect their vital organsB.foods with natural enzymes help people keep fitC.we’d better be cautious about raw and whole foodsD.giving up cooked and refined foods is a new lifestyle【3】 Processed foods are unhealthy because they __________.A.destroy body’s cells B.are difficult to digestC.may lead to obesity D.stop body’s metabolism【4】What is likely to be talked about following the last paragraph?A.Active approaches to avoid acid.B.Different causes of acid accumulation.C.Correct ways to cook raw foods.D.Suitable types of raw and whole foods.【5】What can we learn from the text?A.Processed foods are good for our appetite mechanism.B.Eating the right types of raw and whole foods does good to our body.C.The accumulation of acid in the digestive tract makes digestion more effective.D.Processed foods also comfort the digestive tract.四、单词拼写根据句子意思和所给首字母或中文提示,在标有题号的横线上写出一个英语单词的完整、正确形式,使句意通顺。
