AOutside viewVoice-overEvery year, millions of young people take time out to help others as volunteers. Many of them do this during a gap year between finishing school and starting in higher education. Volunteers learn to solve problems, work together as a team and develop their personalities. Communities in need get help they couldn’t afford to pay for. In Britain, one of the main agencies for voluntary work is Raleigh International. It arranges for thousands of people, aged between 17 and 25, to help out in their own country or abroad. This group of 100 people has just arrived at the base camp in Costa Rica. In the next ten weeks, they are taking part in threedifferent projects. One of the projects is environmental, one community-based and one an adventure project. But first, they have training for the conditions they will encounter. For the environmental project at Curu, the volunteers are going to help to build an artificial reef from recycled materials. This forms a protective environment for the fish to breed and feed. It helps the local economy of commercial fishing and protects the natural reefs from over-fishing and destruction. The community project is in one of the poorest rural areas in the world. In the village of El Porvenir, volunteers are going to make bricks. They’re going to help to build a storehouse for the important sesame crop. If they have more storage, the villagers will be able to make more money from selling sesame. Volunteers also take part in a survival activity. Tomorrow, this group is trekking to the summit of Costa Rica’s highest mountain, Mount Chirripo. At the end of the ten weeks, the volunteers are proud that their efforts have helped to improve the lives of the people and the environment of Costa Rica and Nicaragua.1. 17 to 252. 100 people3. So what can I do for youSpeaker 2Well, next year’s my final year and I need to think seriously about my career.Speaker 1I would agree with you there. Let’s have a look at your file. You’re reading English, you’re getting good grades, you got a merit inyour first year exams and you’re on track for a 2:1 according to your tutor. Have you any idea what you’d like to doSpeaker 2I’m very drawn to publishing. I read a lot of novels and I’m quite a good critic.Speaker 1That’s a good start. I’m guessing you’d like to be a literary editorSpeaker 2That’s right.Speaker 1Well, I should tell you that literary editing is a hard profession to get into and it doesn’t pay very well, unless you’re at the top. You could think a bit more broadly than just literature. For example, there’s educational publishing, professional publishing and there’s also specialist publishing, such as sports.Speaker 2I’m not very sporty.Speaker 1Well, I understand sport may not be your thing but …you get the idea.Speaker 2Yes, I do. So how do I startSpeaker 1First of all, you need agood degree but even before that I would contact publishers and see if they’ll offer you work experience. You won’t get paid, of course, but it’s good for your CV and you’ll learn something about the business.Speaker 2Right. How do I find out who to write toSpeaker 1All the publishers are listed in the Publisher’s Yearbook. There’s a copy in the library in the careers section, so you can use that for a start. Check the job adverts in the newspapers and maybe look at the specialist publishing trade journal, the Bookseller. That has job ads as well.Speaker 2Thank you.Speaker 1The other thing you might do is check the Internet –sometimes, the publishers’websites offer internships or job experience opportunities for new graduates.Speaker 2I’ll do that.Speaker 1One other thing. Graduates studying Englishalways want to be an editor, they’re quite romantic about it, but there are other departments –marketing, sales, and the production side. Don’t dismiss those.Speaker 2Thanks for the advice, it’s very helpful. But it’s literary editing that I want to do.Speaker 1Well, I wish you the best. Let me know how you get on. And good luck with your exams.1.The five pieces of advice he career adviser gives the student are 1,2,4,7 and 82.1. The woman is to take her second year exams.2. She wants to do literary editing.3. She maintains that she wants to do literary editing.Passage2HarrySo how was your first day of teaching, LucyLucyIt was all right –wasn’t as terrifying as I thought it would be.HarryWell done!LucyYes, I was frightened I’d go completely blank but it was OK. However, we’re going to look at one of the biggest technological marvels of the 21st century. The Airbus A380 is the world’s biggest commercial aircraft. New technologies were used in the design, engineering and manufacture of this amazing “superjumbo”. The Airbus A380 is assembled in Toulouse in France, but parts of the aircraft are built in several European countries. They are brought to Toulouse by various means of transport. This is a ship which was built in China especially to transport the huge sections of the plane. Parts of the main body are built in Germany. Special carbon fibre materials are used to give the plane great strength with less weight than usual. The wings are made in Britain of the same carbon fibre material. They are much lighter than aluminum and steel. Several parts of the plane are built in factories in Spain. Finally, some sections are built inFrance, so Airbus has its own factories in Britain, France, Germany and Spain. One of the most important pieces of technology for such a huge aircraft is the landing gear. This is built in Canada where extensive tests are carried out to ensure that it can land under any conditions. The engines were developed by Rolls-Royce at Derby in Britain. Finally, pilots have to learn to fly the plane. This flight simulator at Toulouse uses the latest digital technology. Now for the moment of truth, with 154 planes ordered by the world’s airlines, the big question was: “Will it fly at all”On the day of the first flight, thousands of people gathered at Toulouse Airport to see the superjumbo fly for the first time. They were not disappointed. The biggest airliner in the history of aviation took to the air as planned.Topics mentioned are: 1, 3, 5, 6 and 82.1.France2. China3. Britain4. CListening inPassage1PresenterCould technological advances be changing people’s identities –and possibly even society as a whole That is the theory behind a new book on the brain by Professor Susan Greenfield. The book is called Tomorrow’s People: How 21st Century Technology Is Changing the Way We Think and Feel. Greenfield suggests that advances in technology, and the effect they are having on our lives, are changing our very idea of who we are. In other words, they are changing our identity. And this, she thinks, is a very dangerous thing. I’m joined in the studio by Dr Jane Ferris, Professor of Neuroscience at Imperial College London and Brian Thomas, Professor of Surgery at University College Hospital. Let’s begin at the beginning. Brian, how do brains workBrianWell, a brain is a mass of neurons, and these neurons make connections with each other –billions of connections –and store information. We all have basically the same brain structure. It’s what we dowith our brain that makes the difference. We take in information. The neurons in our brain connect all this information and make sense of it. So to some extent, it’s the information we feed our brain that helps to make us the kind of people we are –and that’s what we call our identity.JaneAnd if I can come in here, children and young people are now spending huge amounts of time on video games that are often violent, also on the web, and on mobile phones. And Greenfield believes that the result is that these technologies may be changing the way young people think and even causing changes in theiridentity.PresenterWhy exactlyJaneBecause the information that an individual receives from computer games, for example, is very different from reality. And she fears that because of this, these technologies may be changing our sense of reality –what we see as real –and may even reduce it. And if this is happening, the result may well be changes in our behaviour.PresenterCan you give an exampleJaneRisk-taking is a good example –we may start taking more risks.BrianBut she admits there’s no conclusive evidence of this.JaneThat’s true.BrianI agree that Greenfield asks some interesting questions, but to say that technology can influence society to think and behave differently –we need much more research before we can accept this.2.1. presenter2. How can anyone say otherwise They’ve revolutionized our lives. I mean, I don’t know where to begin, they’ve changed our lives so much. Look. To start with, computers mean we can communicate with anyone anywhere in the world almost instantly.Speaker 1That’s not quite true.Speaker2Well, you know what I mean. I can send a document from London to Sydney in five minutes. If I want to conference with people there’s webcam –we can see each other on camera –do you really want me to go onSpeaker 1But why is it so useful, to be able to send a documentto Australia in five minutes What does it actually achieve Speaker 2It speeds things up. I don’t have to put the document in an envelope, stick a stamp on it and go to the post office, stand in a queue …knowing it will take another three days to get there –at least.Speaker 1But why the hurrySpeaker 2It’s good to get things done quickly.Speaker 1WhySpeaker 2Because you get more done that way.Speaker 1But is that really necessarily better Life moves so fast these days, don’t you think we should slow down a bit, enjoy life a bit moreSpeaker 2I think computers allow us to enjoy life more. Before we had computers if you wanted to research you had to go out and get a book. That took such a long time.Speaker 1So what We just did things more slowly, that’s all. Are you saying we have more time now than we didEveryone says that actually life is moving faster and faster. And what about all the problems that computers createSpeaker 2For exampleSpeaker 1Identity theft is a big one. You have to admit that identify theft has increased massively since we got the Internet.Speaker 2The Internet isn’t the only reason why identity theft has increased.Speaker 1You know as well as I do that it’s a big reason …Speaker 2Yes, but …6.1. Basic Listening Practice1. ScriptW: Let me recommend my brother to you. He’s really done well in the stock market over the last few years.M: The real question is this: How have you dine by taking his advice?Q: What does the man mean?2. ScriptM: Many investors jump on IPOs, hoping to get rich by getting into a stock early before it goes up.W: But isn’t that a bit like buying a book without reading it? I mean, what if it doesn’t go up?Q: What is the woman’s opinion?3. ScriptW: The Dow was down again today. It’s hard to make money when high fuel prices are killing the stock market.M: There’s still money to be made. If you bought oil futures three months ago, you’d be smiling right now.Q: What can we learn from the dialog?4. ScriptM: I can’t wait to get back to my computer. Online share trading has totally changed the stock market and the lives of investors. Hook up to the Internet and be your own broker!W: In other words you can cut out the middle man now. For about $500, you can open an account and begin buying and selling shares from your own home, 24 hours a day. Q: Which of the following is true if they want to trade shares on the Internet?5. ScriptM: Hold onto your hat! We’ll be rich. I’m buying shares in a new company.M: You can’t buy IPO shares unless you have a big active with a broker. The day of dot-com fortunes from IPOs are over.Q: According to the conversation, what is the condition for buying IPO shares.Listening InTask 1: Tell me about the stock exchange.ScriptGeorge: I’m supposed to give a presentation on the stock exchange, but I don’t yet know a thing about it. Could you give me some tips?Diana: The problem with you is that you’ve skipped too many classes. Now,let me give you a few tips. First of all, you need to define the stock exchange. It’s an organization of brokers and investment bankers. In Europe it is oftencalled a bourse.George: Could you tell me more about it? Like, how does it work?Diana: It provides facilities for the trading of company stocks, mainly the location and the record-keeping devices.George: Can I go and trade there?Diana: It depends. You have to be a member of the exchange before you can buy and sell shares there. They call it having “a seat” on the exchange.George: Something they use the term “stock market”.Diana: Well, the trading of stock on stock exchanges is called the stock market. George: How can a company be listed on the stock exchange?Diana: It has to meet certain requirements. To be listed on the New York Stock Exchange last year, for example, a company had to have issued at least amillion shares of stock worth$16 and had to have had more than $ millionnet income.George: Wow, that’s a huge sum! Small companies haven’t got a chance.Diana: Big companies have more influence on the stock prices after all.George: I see what you mean.Stock exchange a thing some tips define investment bankers Europe a member stock market requirements a million shares net incomeTask 2: Stockbroker helps Mr. Junkie to shortScriptABC stock reached$155. “$155” for a stock that should be valued at$100. Wow! “That’s it,”I said to myself. “It’s time I make a decision. I’m going to shortthat stock.” I thought to myself, “This stock is overvalued. It can’t remain atthe present level for long. This means money in the bank.”So I phoned my broker.“I want to place a trade. I want to short 1,500 shares of ABC.“I’m sorry, Mr. Junkie,” he said, “I can’t process that for you. Your account is cash account. You need a margin account to short a stock. I can send you the application form or you nearest financial institution to fill out the forms.”The minute I got of the phone, I heard out the door because time is money. I ran to the financial institution to fill out the form and sent it to the broker by express mail service. Next morning I called him.“Hello, it’s Mr. Junkie. Did you get my application?“Yes.”“Great, I would like to short ABC then.”“One minute please…I’m sorry, Mr. Junkie, but you now need a shorter’s account.”“What! You mean the margin account isn’t enough?”“No, you also need a shorter’s account. Any financial institution nearby has the forms.”Off I ran again. I completed the form and had a taxi deliver to my broker. In the afternoon I called again.“Hello, it’s Mr. Junkie. I want to short 1,500 shares of ABC at $155.”A few moments later he answered, “Mr. Junkie, I am sorry, but I don’t think that is possible.”“Why not?”“Well, the last trade went through at $99.”F 1. The broker did not believe ABC stock could remain at $155 for long.T 2. Mr. Junkie wanted to short 1,500 shares of ABC.T . Junkie could get a margin account through either a financial institution or his broker.T 4. To short a stock, one needs both a margin account and a shorter’s account.F 5. Mr. Junkie asked a taxi driver the forms for a margin account to the broker.Task 3: Who am I if I own stocks?ScriptWhen a person buys stocks in a company, that person becomes a shareholder in that company. Stockholder is another name for shareholder. A shareholder can also be called an investor of the company. When that company makes money, which can also be called earned income or profit, the value of the company’s stock often increases. That’s because more people may become interested in investing in the company. Sometimes, shareholders receive a dividend, which is part of the company’s earned incomes, in the form of a cash payment. Some people try to make money by buying and selling stocks. Stock prices can move up and down. Shareholders may make money or lose money by selling stocks that they own, depending on whether the price has gone up or down since they bought their shares.A company’s stock price may be affected by market or economic conditions. Forexample, let’s say that BCD Enterprises is a software company that has introduced a new video game into the market. If that game is a hit, sales of the video game could boost the company’s earnings. Because of the potential for BCD Enterprises to grow, its stock may be viewed as an attractive investment and its stock price may go up as more people buy its shares. On the other hand, let’s say the video game that BCD Enterprises introduced is a flop. Or, it could be a good time, but BCD introduced it at a time when people are spending less on leisure products, and hardly anyone is buying the game. So it’s reported that BCD is losing money because of this new product. Then the stock price for BCD Enterprises may go down if a number of shareholders decide to sell their shares.1. What is the passage mainly concerned with?C) The influence of shareholders’ buying and selling on a company.2. Which of the following is NOT the same as a shareholder?B) A person selling shares on behalf of others.3. What may affect a company’s stock price?D) All of the above.4. According to the passage, which of the following is true if a company’s product is good?A) The company’s stock price may go up.5. Why does the speaker mention BCD Enterprises?D) BCD is used as an example to illustrate the stock market principlesSpeaking OutMODEL 1 The stock market is driven by fear and greed.Chris: Nora!Nora: Hey Chris. Why the big grin? You look like the cat that swallowed the canary. Chris: Even better. An uncle I hardly knew passes away and left an inheritance of $100,000. So now I’m thinking of making some investments.Nora: Good idea, thouh it would be more fun if we spent it together. What sort of investment do you have in mind?Chris: The stock market is looking attractive. It’s been a bear market for several years now, and I think stock prices are pretty depressed.Nora: The decling market has investors depressed, too.Chris: But all things work in cycles. A bear market will eventually be followed bya bull market.Nora: That’s sure. I’ve been reading that investors are coming back to the market, and that will drive up the value of stocks.Chris: I believe the market is picking up.Nora: But there’s still a risk. Wars, weather problems—all these impact incestor s’ confidence.Chris: I know what you mean. The stock market is driven by fear snd greed. When investors are cinfident od making of a fortune, they buy—that’s greed at work.Nora: But along comes something to shake their confidence…Chris: Like a rise in interest rates, for example, and bingo, they become afraid that they might lose their shares, so they pull out of the market. Now Your TurnA: I’ve saved a lot of money over the past years, and now I’d like to invest it for a profit.B: What sort of investment do you have in mind?A: The stock market is looking attractive. It’s been a bear market for several years now, and I think stock prices are pretty depressed.B: The falling market has discouraged many investors.A: But all things work in cycles. A bear market will eventually be followed by a bull market.B: That’s true. When the market does touch its bottom, it’ll rebound.A: I hope the investors will soon come back to the market and drive it up.B: But there’re still risks. Wars, weather problems—all these affect buyers’confidence. We’re not sure if the market has reached its bottom.A: The bear market has lasted over four years; I think it’s time for it to pick up.B: It’s really hard to say. The Japanese stock market has had a bear run of about ten years.A: Really?B: And when NASDAQ fell from 5,000 points to 3,000 points, some people believe it was a golden opportunity to enter the market. Then the market plunged.A: So the stock market is really risky. I may lose money.B: And maybe even your shirts.A: Well, perhaps I’d better put my money on the bank. The stock has to be launched.Helen: You know, this has been a privately owned company since we first opened lastyear and, to be honest with you, I’m inclined in keeping in that way. Bill: But the market is changing rapidly, and we need to think long term and take proactive measure; otherwise, we’ll find ourselves behind the competition. Helen: That’s a good point; perhaps I should be more open—minded about this. Bill: Don’t you think you’re a little short of funds at the moment?Helen: That’s true.Bill: You simply can’t afford to upgrade your facilities without considerable outside investment. The bank won't lend you the money.Helen: I haven’t tried it.Bill: Even if it did, the interest rate for that much capital would be more we could afford.I’m convinced, the only way to generate the funds we need is to go public.Helen: What should I do then?Bill: A consultant will be coming in next week to explain the registration procedure for an IPO.Helen: That’s great because I want to have a thorough understanding of what this entails before any decisions are made.Bill: The important point is that you have to demonstrate you’re financially qualified to be listed on the stock market. Now Your TurnA: Mr. Smith, though your company has grown fast few years, the market is changing the rapidly. So you need to think the long term and take proactive measures; otherwise, you’ll find it behind the competition.B: You’re quite right, but can you be more specific about what we must do?A: Don’t you think your company is a bit short of funds to expand production at the moment.B: That’s right.A: You simply can’t afford to upgrade your facilities without large external investments.B: Perhaps I have to borrow money from the bank.A: It won’t lend you so much money.B: I haven’t tried it.A: Even if you got a loan, the interest rate for large sum would be more than you can afford. I’m convinced, the only way to gather funds you need is to go to public.B: What should I do then?A: Let me explain the requirements for an IPO.B: I’m all ears. I want to have a thorough understanding of what this entails beforeI make further decisions.A: The important point is that you have to demonstrate that you are financially qualified to be launched on the stock market. You must show you have a capital of 50 million yuan.B: Our company does have that amount of money. Are there other requirements?A: You have to prove that the company has been making a profit in the past three years. It’s also essential that there are no false financial reports.B: Ok, no problem. I’ll try to go through the Registration procedure to get our company listed.MODEL 3 Nothing is certain n the stock marketSusan: Hey, Chris, have you read the paper today?Chris: No. why? What’s up?Susan: The store market has dropped again.Chris: Oh, no! Not again! How many points did it lose this time?Susan: One hundred.Chris: Let’s see…that’s a drop of three percent. Well, there goes the money I was going to use to buy a new car.Susan: Before you get upset, I think you should look at the stock listings for today. Chris: What for?Susan: Well, some stocks actually gained, especially telecom stocks.Chris: Let me see that paper. You’re right! My stock went up five percent overnight! That’s great!Susan: For now, anyway. It may plunge tomorrow.Chris: you’re right. I’m going to call my broker cash in my stocks. I’m not taking any more changes with my savings.Susan: You’re wisher than most people I know. Sometimes it’s better to play it safe. Now Your TurnA: Hey, Jack, I hear you become a millionaire by investing in the stock market. ButI always lose money in the market. Can you give me a few tips?B: First of all, let’s look at the stock listing in today’s newspaper.A: Wow, the stock market dropped again.B: What stock did you buy?A: BCD.B: How many points did it lose this time?A: More than a hundred.B: Let’s see…That’s a drop of nearly five percent.A: Oh, there goes a lot of my money. I’m thinking about pulling out of the market. B: Before you get upset, I’d like to give you some advice.A: What’s that?B: Well, the market is cyclical. Through you’re losing money now, your stock may gain in future. Personally, I believe your stock is a good one. You’d better keep it until it goes up one day.A: So I can’t make money in a short time?B: Let’s look at XYZ stock. It’s now a junk stock, but it’s been low for a long time. It may climb up at any moment.A: So, I’ll buy it and wait for it to go up.B: And cash in your stock when it reaches a point that is high enough to give youa profit. My basic principle is to buy at the bottom and sell at the peak. A: I see. I’ll buy low and sell high. But what if XYZ plunges again after I buy it?B: You have to take changes. There’s always risk in the stock market.Let’s TalkGregory: I’ve been thinking about getting into the stock market, but I don’t know where to start. What do you know about buying stocks?Sylvia: Well, I have a few investments, so I know a little about it. Now it is probably a good time to invest. The market is low; prices are probablypretty good.Gregory: So you mean it’s high time to enter the market? What kind of stock do you suggest?Sylvia: I won’t recommend any specific stock. You have to make the decision on your own. If you want to make money quickly, you could try speculating. Gregory: What do you mean by speculating?Sylvia: You buy stocks that go up quickly for a fast profit.Gregory: Isn’t that risky? Stocks that go up fast also tend to go down fast. Sylvia: You just have to guess how high they’ll go, and then sell when you think they are about to come down. If you guess right, you can make lots of moneyin the blink of an eye.Gregory: But I hear that many people guess wrong. When they think the market is already very low, they start to buy. Then the market continues to drop. Sylvia: In that case you will lose your shirt. But to make money, you have to take changes.Gregory: Hmm, I’m not much of a gambler.Sylvia: So you probably want to stick to blue chip stocks for a guarantee return on your investment.Gregory: That sounds right up my alley.Gregory is thinking about getting into the stock market and wants to know how to buy stocks.Sylvia say the market is low, so prices are probably pretty good.Gregory sees it is high time to enter the market.Sylvia Suggest speculating, which means buying stocks that go up quickly and then selling quickly for a fast profit.Gregory finds it risky because stocks that go up fast also tend to go down fast. Sylvia says that he has to guess how high they will go and then sells when he thinks they’re about to come down.Gregory hears that many people guess wrong. When they start to buy, the market continues to drop.Sylvia says that, to make money, he has to take changes.Gregory admits that he is not much of a gambler.Sylvia suggests that he stick to the blue chip stocks for a guaranteed return on his investment.DiscussionA: I’m renting an apartment. If you go on like this, I’ll never have an apartment of my own. So I’m thinking buying an apartment, but I don’t know whether it’s good time to invest in property.B: Soon it’ll be high time to buy houses. There’s been good news for buyers lately. A: What’s it?B: in the light of the speculative investment in real estate, the government has recently issued a number of rules. For example, those who sell newly—bought apartment have to pay a tax. So probably fewer people are willing to speculate in the real estate market, and the housing prices will drop.A: I have to wait and see. I would be glad even if the prices just remain stable. Any other good news?B: Some people propose bypassing the real estate developers. They want to pool their funds to build their own apartment buildings. In this way they can cut the costs by a big margin.A: Sounds interesting, though I’m not sure if it’s practical. About when do you think I should buy an apartment?B: Pretty soon. I guess the prices will fall soon.A: I want to know exactly when. Shall I buy it next week or next month?B: You just have to guess how low the prices will go, and then buy at the right time. A: It’s a bit risky because I may guess wrong. After I buy an apartment, the price may plunge again.B: You have to take changes and make the decision on your own.A: Hmm, I’m not much of a gambler. Perhaps I’ll wait and see and continue to live in the rented apartment.B: There’s also risk in this. It’s not altogether impossible that housing prices will move up a little bit. If that’s the case, you’ll have to pay even more in the future.A: My God, there are risks everywhere! So you’ve told me next to nothing.Further Listening and SpeakingTask1: what do you know about NASDAQ?As the world’s largest electronic, NASDAQ is not limited to one trading location. One broker told such a story:One of my clients called me on Thursday. He was anxious and out of breath, and spoke with great urgency. He said to me, “Jone, sell it all. Sell everything, fast, right away.”I tried to explain to him that the market was cyclical, and that in the long term stocks would return to normal. He said, “John, let me tell you a secret. You know I’ve been married for sixty years now, and I’ve been your client for five.”“Yes, go on.” I said encouragingly.“Well, my wife Lucie has a sort of phobia about the market. When we got married, I promised her that I would follow in her parents’footsteps and never venture into the stock market and always leave all our money under the mattress. Her great grandparents once lost everything in a great crash, and ever since then her family found investing in the market similar to crime.”“Wow, Howard, I didn’t know that. I guess you want the money because the market is going down.”“No, John, I want the money because she ordered a new mattress, and it is being delivered in two days.”Task 3: A Stock Market CrashA stock market crash is a dramatic loss of shares of corporations. Crashes often follow speculative stock market bubbles such as the dot-com boom. After the most famous crash in 1929, known as the Black Thursday when the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 50%, there came the Great Depression. The following years saw the Dow drop a total of over 85%.There was also a crash on Monday, October 19, 1987, known in financial circles as the Black Monday, when the Dow lost 22%of its value in a single day, bringing to an end a five-year bull run. The pattern was repeated across the world. The stock market downturn of 2002 was part of a larger bear market that took the NASDAQ 75%from its highs and broader indices down 30%.Stock market crashes are driven by panic as much as by economics factors. They often follow stock market bubbles. So long as the prospect of further daily drops in thevalue stocks continues, those who invest in equities will be discouraged. If few people are willing to make further investments, a bear market is expected to persist.News ReportWorsening Bank AssetsMany of the traditional quantitative indicators suggest that bank asset quality is deteriorating, and that supervisors therefore need to be more sentitive to problems at individual banks, both currently and in the months ahead. Some of the credits that were made in earlier periods of optimism—especially syndicated loans—are now under pressure and scrutiny. The softening economy and all special circumstances have especially affected borrowers in the retail, manufacturing, health care and telecommunication industries. California utilities, as you know, have also been under particular pressure. All of these, and no doubt other problem areas that are not now of foreseeable, require that both bank management and supervisors remain particularly alert to development. We are fortunate enough that our banking system entered this period of weak economic performance in a strong position. After rebuilding capital and liquidity in the early 1990s, followed by several years of post-World War II record profits and very strong loan growth, our banks now have prudent capital and reserve positions. In addition, asset quality was quite good by historical standards before the deterioration began.Building on banking practices, we are in the process of improving both lending and supervisory policies that we trust will foster better risk management; but these policies could also reduce the pro-cyclical pattern of easing and tightening of bank lending and accordingly increase bank shareholder values and economic stability. It is an easy road, Mr. Chairman, but it seems that we are well along it.。

For example, let’s say that BCD Enterprises is a software company that has introduced a new video game into the market. What is the passage mainly concerned withC) The influence of shareholders’ buying and selling on a company.2. Which of the following is NOT the same as a shareholderB) A person selling shares on behalf of others.3. What may affect a company’s stock priceD) All of the above.4. Through you’re losing money now, your stock may gain in future. Personally, I believe your stock is a good one. You’d better keep it until it goes up one day.A: So I can’t make money in a short timeB: Let’s look at XYZ stock. But what if XYZ plunges again after I buy itB: You have to take changes. There’s always risk in the stock market.Let’s TalkGregory: I’ve been thinking about getting into the stock market, but I don’t know where to start. What do you know about buying stocksSylvia: Well, I have a few investments, so I know a little about it. Now it is probably a good time to invest. The market is low; prices are probablypretty good.Gregory: So you mean it’s high time to enter the market What kind of stock do you suggestSylvia: I won’t recommend any specific stock. You have to make the decision on your own. If you want to make money quickly, you could try speculating. Gregory: What do you mean by speculatingSylvia: You buy stocks that go up quickly for a fast profit.Gregory: Isn’t that risky Stocks that go up fast also tend to go down fast. A: What’s itB: in the light of the speculative investment in real estate, the government has recently issued a number of rules. For example, those who sell newly—bought apartment have to pay a tax. So probably fewer people are willing to speculate in the real estate market, and the housing prices will drop.A: I have to wait and see. I would be glad even if the prices just remain stable. Any other good newsB: Some people propose bypassing the real estate developers. They want to pool their funds to build their own apartment buildings. In this way they can cut the costs by a big margin.A: Sounds interesting, though I’m not sure if it’s practical. About when do you think I should buy an apartmentB: Pretty soon. I guess the prices will fall soon.A: I want to know exactly when. Shall I buy it next week or next monthB: You just have to guess how low the prices will go, and then buy at the right time. So you’ve told me next to nothing.Further Listening and SpeakingTask1: what do you know about NASDAQAs the world’s largest electronic, NASDAQ is not limited to one trading location. So long as the prospect of further daily drops in the value stocks continues, those who invest in equities will be discouraged. California utilities,as you know, have also been under particular pressure.

Shareholders may make money or lose money by selling stocks that they own, depending on whether the price has gone up or down since they bought their shares. A company’s stock price may be affected by market or economic conditions. For example, let’s say that BCD Enterprises is a software company that has introduced a new video game into the market. You look like the cat that swallowed the canary.Chris: Even better. An uncle I hardly knew passes away and left an inheritance of$100,000. A bear market will eventually be followed by a bull market. Nora: That’s sure. I’ve been reading that investors are coming back to the market, and that will drive up the value of stocks.Chris: I believe the market is picking up.Nora: But there’s still a risk. Wars, weather problems—all these impact incestor s’ confidence. Chris: I know what you mean. Wars, weather problems—all these affect buyers’ confidence. I want to have a thorough understanding of what this entails before I make further decisions.A: The important point is that you have to demonstrate that you are financially qualified to be launched on the stock market. You must show you have a capital of 50 million yuan.B: Our company does have that amount of money. Are there other requirements?A: You have to prove that the company has been making a profit in the past three years. It’s also essential that there are no false financial reports.B: Ok, no problem. I’ll try to go through the Registration procedure to get our company listed.MODEL 3 Nothing is certain n the stock marketSusan: Hey, Chris, have you read the paper today?Chris: No. why? Without size and location limitations, NASDAQ’s open market structure allows a virtually unlimited number of participants to trade in a company’s stock.Today, NASDAQ lists the securities of nearly 4,100 of the world’s leading companies, and each year it continues to help hundreds of companies go public.Trading on NASDAQ is not limited to any fixed number of participants. This allows a large number of firms with widely different business models and trading technologies to connect to the NASDAQ network and compete on an equal basis. Rather than forcing investors to go through a single financial firms called makers. More than 500 market making firms trade on NASDAQ, acting ad distributors for NASDAQ-listed securities. When we got married, I promised her that I would follow in her parents’ footsteps and never venture into the stock market and always leave all our money under the mattress. The stock market downturn of XXXX was part of a larger bear market that took the NASDAQ 75%from its highs and broader indices down 30%.Stock market crashes are driven by panic as much as by economics factors. They often followstock market bubbles. So long as the prospect of further daily drops in the value stocks continues, those who invest in equities will be discouraged. In addition, asset quality was quite good by historical standards before the deterioration began. Building on banking practices, we are in the process of improving both lending and supervisory policies that we trust will foster better risk management; but these policies could also reduce the pro-cyclical pattern of easing and tightening of bank lending and accordingly increase bank shareholder values and economic stability. It is an easy road, Mr. Chairman, but it seems that we are well along it.。

Listening InTask 1: How I plan my HolidaysWhen I plan my holidays, I like to go where I haven’t been to before. How do I choose? The Internet is a good source of basic information. All resorts and hotels have websites and offer special prices through them. You can often book rooms cheaper on the Internet than in person. Sometimes you can get coupons that will give you a cut in the usual price. For example, I have visited Sand Beach many times. But I’d never stayed in its old town. Well, I got a coupon for aroom at half price at the Grand Hotel there. I discovered that the old town had antique shops and was generally an interesting area. I also like fine food, so I search out information on good. restaurants and try to have meals in them. Some planning can prevent a holiday from becoming a disaster and with a bit of luck make it an experience of a lifetime.1.C2. B3. B4. A5. ATask 2: Planning for the HolidaysM: Hey, Susan, my classes in this semester are over at last!W: Over? I still have two finals to take and three term papers to finish.M: Take it easy! How much time do we have before the next semester starts?M: About three weeks, I guess.W: How about if we go to the coast? It would be warm and we can sun ourselves.M: The coast would be good. We can spend a quiet time with people there for the Chinese Spring Festival.W: Don’t be joking. Ok, the mountains. But the most important thing for me at the moment is tomorrow’s exam.M: Good luck to you, Susan! I’ll start packing.1.She still has two finals to take and three term papers to finish.2. He’d like to go somewhere far away from school and forget aboutlectures and essays and all that hard work.3. Because it would be warm there and they can sun themselves.4. Some people look forward to stuffing themselves with turkey every year on Thanksgiving. Great as those are, they don’t compare with my favorite. I LOVE Halloween! Why Halloween? Well, Halloween is the night of the year when we can all get dressed up as someone else, pretend and let our imaginations run wild. Even adults get a free pass to go back to their childhood and become that kid still inside all of us. It’s also the one night of the year when we get to shine light on the dark, and confront monsters, ghosts, witches, and all things dead. We get to confront our biggest fears, as both children and adults, and reassure ourselves that there’s really no reason to be afraid of things we see at night.Christmas Thanksgiving dressed imaginations adults childhood shine confront dead reassure at nightTask 4: Introduction by a Tour GuideGood morning, passengers. Welcome aboard. We’ll be arriving in Disneyland within an hour. In the meantime, it is my pleasure to make you aware of the many historic and scenic spots along the way. And there are many indeed, so just sit back, relax and look out of the window. Before you know it, we’ll hear Mickey Mouse welcoming us.VI. Furthering Listening and SpeakingTask 1: Valentine’s DayValentine’s Day started when the Emperor Claudius II ruled Rome. Claudius punished Rome into so many wars that he had a hard time finding soldiers for his army. He thought the reason was that Roman men did not want to leave their families and lovers. To solve that problem, he cancelled marriages and engagements. But a Christian priest named Valentine who believed in love and marriage secretly married couples When the emperor learned about these marriages, he sent Valentine to prison. The priest died in prison on February 14,270. Not until a few hundred years later did Saint Valentine’s Day take its present form. Today we still honor Saint Valentine. Theold ideas of love, marriage and fertility have lasted and taken on modern meanings.1. wars finding soldiers2. families and lovers3. love and marriage4. prison February 145. fertility modern meaningsTask 2: Holiday bluesWhile for many people the holiday season is joyous and hopeful, others may find it just as stressful as interviewing for a new job. Many factors can contribute to the holiday blues. To begin with, there are more parties to attend and more shopping trips to make. But this doesn’t mean we work fewer hours or get a break from household duties—we just try to do more things in a single day. Then there are the financial burdens. The rewards of being generous to close friends and family may outweigh the price tag—and what about extended family, old friends from school, and co-workers? Don’t they deserve gifts? And finally, the holidays can be truly painful when we recall the loss of those who are no longer celebrating with us because of death, distance or divorce. However, the good news is that it’s usually possible to prevent the holiday blues by diversifying your holiday plans.T F F T TTask 3: Jingle BellsDashing through the snow,In a one-horse open sleigh. 新标准大学英语综合教程4 Unit 10 答案

The human spirit 10Unit 10 The human spiritTeaching suggestions and answer keys Starting pointWork in pairs. Read the information and discuss the questions.1 What are the risks involved with each of these expeditions? For the two seafarers: shipwreck, typhoons, running out of food and water, hostile natives and simply getting lost. Earhart ran a risk of bad weather, engine failure and running out of fuel over water. The mountaineers risked falls, hypothermia, snow storms, and breathing problems. Armstrong was totally dependent on his equipment. Even small failures could rapidly lead to death.2 What kind of people are motivated to undertake these expeditions? What do you think their motivationsare? The people must be brave, ambitious and determined. Maybe they need to be a little mad, obsessed with a dream. This may be less true of the first two who had economic and political motives as well. Earhart and Hillary wanted fame. Tenzing was earning his living. Armstrong as a military person also felt it was his duty to his country.3 What, if any, are the benefits to humanity in general that come from these expeditions? What, if any, arethe harms? The first three were about communicating across distance and opening up new trade and travel routes. The modern world arises from such ventures which have brought prosperity to many, but at a great cost in violence, exploitation and disease. The final three opened up new frontiers. The conquest of the mountain has led to some pollution but no serous problems. The effects of space science seem so far to have been benign but it is far too early to tell what will follow.4 What personal characteristics are necessary for such expeditions? Which of those characteristics do youpossess?Bravery, determination, stubbornness, ambition, perseverance, arrogance. They are not all good qualities. I think I have a great deal of determination but probably not enough to undertake such dramatic feats. These are exceptional people. The human spirit Unit 10Active reading (1)1 Look at the lines marked on the globe. What purpose do they serve? They are the lines of longitude and latitude which are used for measuring distance and time around the world, and locating places on the globe.2 Look at the title of the passage and answer the questions.1 What determines where lines of longitude are placed? One may say lines of longitude are determined by the law of nature, but the passage tells that the placement of the longitude lines is political decision.2 What determines where lines of latitude are placed? The law of nature.3 The invention of what machine was necessary before longitude could be accurately measured?Accurate clocks.LongitudeBackground informationLongitude is a best-selling book by Dava Sobel on the life of the great British instrument / clock maker John Harrison (1693–1776).Culture pointsCanary Islands and Madeira Islands: The former are Spanish and the latter Portuguese. They lie off the west coast of Africa and are popular holiday destinations owing to their lovely climates.Azores is another group of islands North West of the previous two.Cape Verde Islands are a group islands south of the Canaries, an independent state.Vasco Nunez be Balboa (1474–1519), Spanish explorer, noted as the first European to cross the isthmus of Panama and see the Pacific from that shore.Ferdinand Magellan (1480–1521), Portuguese explorer, led first circumnavigation of the globe.Sir Francis Drake (1540–1596), English naval hero in Elizabeth I’s wars with Spain, first Englishman to circumnavigate the Earth.Language points1 ... and national boundaries repeatedly redrawn by war and peace. (Para 7)They have been fixed according to the sun’s motion as seen from Earth. They are fixed, not human choices.4 The zero-degree parallel of latitude is fixed by the laws of nature, while the zero-degree meridian oflongitude shifts like the sands of time. (Para 9)The Equator is an objectively calculated line; the prime meridian is a human convention and it has been moved about – at present by international agreement it goes through London, but it can be changed whenever nations wish. The sands of time means the passing of time, a metaphor based on the old timing devices one turned upside down to measure a length of time.5 … and turns the determination of longitude, especially at sea into an adult dilemma – one thatstumped the wisest minds of the world for the better part of human history. (Para 9)… and makes it hard to determine the longitude, especially when people are taking navigation at sea.Stumped the wisest minds of the world means no one could solve it even though some clever people tried. If a problem stumps someone, they cannot think of a solution. For the better part of human history means for most of human history – indeed until it was solved in the late 18th century.6 The measurement of longitude meridians, in comparison, is tempered by time. (Para 11)Tempered by time means reliant on knowing the time.Reading and understanding3 Choose the best summary of the passage.3 Longitude, a great aid to ocean navigators, is more difficult to calculate than latitude because the linescan be arbitrarily placed. In addition, calculating degrees of longitude depends on having an accurate clock both on land and at sea.4 Choose the best answer to the questions.1 What is true about lines of longitude?(a) They are still changing positions today.(b) They are parallel to one another.(c) They are all the same length.(d) They are no longer used for navigation.2 What was the importance of Ptolemy to navigation?(a) He put together the most advanced maps of his time.(b) He sponsored some important ocean explorations.(c) He made more accurate maps through his own observations.(d) He was the first person to draw lines of longitude and latitude.3 What is the function of the prime meridian?(a) To mark the movement of the sun and planets.(b) To set a zero point for the lines of longitude.(c) To divide the globe into east and west.(d) To trace a line from the North Pole to the South Pole. The human spirit Unit 104 Which of the following CANNOT help a sailor determine latitude?(a) The length of daytime.(b) The position of the sun.(c) The position of the guide stars.(d) The position of the lines of longitude.5 What did Christopher Columbus use for navigation?(a) Lines of latitude.(b) Lines of longitude.(c) Both lines of latitude and lines of longitude.(d) Neither lines of latitude nor lines of longitude.6 What does one need to accurately determine the longitude while at sea?(a) The time on board the ship and the latitude.(b) The time both on board the ship and at a fixed location of known longitude.(c) The difference between the time the ship left land and the current time at sea.(d) The distance that the ship sailed in exactly one hour.7 How many miles does a ship sail to cover 15 degrees of longitude?(a) 15 miles.(b) 1,000 miles.(c) It depends on the speed the ship is sailing.(d) It depends on the ship’s distance from the Equator.8 Why did the great captains of the Age of Exploration get lost at sea?(a) The maps they were using were not correctly drawn.(b) They didn’t have an efficient way to determine longitude.(c) The clocks at that time were not accurate so they couldn’t find the correct latitude.(d) The ships at that time were not easy to navigate.Dealing with unfamiliar words5 Match the words in the box with their definitions.1 a difference between things that should be the same (discrepancy)2 not obvious, and therefore difficult to notice (subtle)3 causing a lot of damage or harm (disastrous)4 in or from the hottest parts of the world (tropical)5 important and likely to influence future actions or decisions (landmark)6 to make a judgment or guess about a situation, action, or person based on the information that you have(gauge)6 Complete the paragraph with the correct form of the words in Activity 5.Because there are no written records, not much is known about who first discovered the Hawaiian Islands. These are serious and informative, but the tone we have mentioned stops it from being very formal or academic. The passage is informing us, not trying to persuade us. It is in fact a good example of popular science writing, presenting something technical in a manner suited to ordinary readers.10 Answer the questions.1 Why does the writer describe the toy she had as a child? It eases us gently into the topic and gives us a clear visual image.2 Why does the writer mention the statue of Atlas? The writer is American and the reference would be helpful to many readers who know the statue ofAtlas. The parallel between the girl on her father’s shoulders and the world on Atlas’ is amusing.3 Why does the writer discuss Ptolemy and his prime meridian? She wishes to tell us some of the history of the concepts of longitude and latitude. This builds up to thelife of her hero in her book and shows how great his achievement was.4 What is the voyage of Christopher Columbus an example of?Sailing with knowledge only of one’s latitude.5 What does the writer refer to with “15 degrees”?The apparent motion of the sun across the sky in one hour.6 Why does the writer mention da Gama, de Balboa, Magellan, and Drake? These are famous explorers whose names are familiar in a general way among Western readers. Theseearly voyagers had to manage without being able to determine their longitude.Developing critical thinking11 Work in pairs and discuss the questions.1 What are some dangers for navigators in not being able to accurately judge longitude?Without a way of measuring longitude, sailors do not know where they are in the ocean and they mightbe sailing into dangerous waters far from where they actually want to be.2 What are some results of the explorers of the Age of Exploration sailing around the Earth? The decline of the land routes [such as the Silk Road] between East and West. The rise of the EasternAtlantic states. The building of colonial empires in South East Asia.3 Do you think many people today can work out directions without a map? For those who can, how dothey do it?Some people do orienteering courses and use compasses. Of course, there are now GPS systems. Somepeople seem to have an in-built sense of direction.4 What other changes came about when people were able to make accurate, portable time pieces such aswatches and small clocks?Time could be scheduled so appointments and fixed work hours became possible. Transport systemscould become far more efficient too.Unit 10 The human spiritTalking point1 Work in pairs. Discuss what the following inventions have made possible.•paper – books, letters, easy note-taking, money•the telescope – violence at greater distances, observation of the skies around, astronomy•the bicycle– faster travel for individuals, greater range of movement•the automobile – leisure driving, movement of goods, suburbs and commuting, better communications •the radio – coordination of activities, ability to communicate over distance, growth of music industry with increased leisure time listening, public education•the airplane – the tourist industry, ease of long distance movement and communication, movement of perishable cargo, bombing•the mobile phone – ability to be in touch all the time, greater safety, ease of arranging events and meetings and adjusting to problems and delays•the personal computer – access to huge quantities of information, e-communication, e-trade, instant access to news, leisure activities and games2 Work in pairs and discuss the questions.1 Which of the inventions in Activity 1 do you use the most in your daily life?I use my bicycle to get around, but I certainly spend more time on my phone than on my bicycle. I checkmessages and call friends whenever I have a spare moment. Then in the evening I use my computer for hours when I am studying and preparing assignments. As for paper, I guess life would be unthinkable without it. After all, I need money and we are not a cashless society yet!2 Are there any inventions in Activity 1 that you could live without?I have never actually used a telescope. I am sure they have many uses but for me personally atelescope is completely unnecessary. And since I bought my first car, my bicycle has become pretty useless too!3 What other inventions are important in your daily life?Let’s think our way through the day. Air-conditioners, fans and heaters are all great. All the kitchen equipment too – kettles, stoves, rice cookers, refrigerators, microwaves and so on. Then I travel to college by train so add all the different types of rail transport to the list. While travelling I listen to my ipod. Next, I use the escalator and lift. For some classes we use LCD projectors, televisions or VCD / DVD players. Later on in the day I need a water heater for my shower. The list gets longer and longer!4 What do you think might be invented in the next ten years? What would you like to see invented?I expect us to be able to have amazing virtual reality experiences. It will be just like entering afilm or walking down a street thousand of miles away. That will be great. But most of all I hope we can find a source of clean energy. If we could find a way to fuel all the things we want to do without polluting the air and land or causing climate change, that would be the greatest invention ever. The human spirit Unit 10Active reading (2)1 Work in pairs and look at the photo. What are the water conditions like? How safe would you feel in a boat in those conditions? Those waves are enormous. I would be scared stiff. I don’t think many ships could survive seas like that. I would be getting ready to drown.2 Read the title of the passage. (Para 6)The wind destroyed our running gear, but if we had not been hit directly by the storm center, we would have avoided our ship being smashed into pieces. In the story the narrator advises the captain to run with the wind and hope to be blown through and beyond the storm, but instead he chooses to stay where he is with the result the storm hits them directly from in front and smashes the ship to tiny pieces.3 That was what fixed us. (Para 6)That was what settled our fate.4 In the absence of the wind and pressure the sea rose. (Para 8)As was described in Paragraph 4, the wind held the sea down by blowing across it with such force, soUnit 10 The human spirit10when the eye of the storm passes over them suddenly the pressure and wind which had been keeping the sea almost smooth is removed and the water leaps up in great fountains around them.5 But there I was, with nothing to do but make the best of it, and in that best there was little promise.(Para 10)To make the best of a situation is to try to save something from a bad state of affairs. The narrator is in the water with a typhoon around him, so he does not expect even the best he can do will be of much use. Reading and understanding3 Choose the best way to complete the sentences.1 The writer says that the wind (b).(a) was not as strong as the waves(b) was unbelievably strong(c) killed one of his companions(d) contained sand and mud2 The writer believes they would have sailed well except that (d).(a) they were on the most dangerous side of the hurricane(b) the Petite Jeanne had an unreliable anchor(c) the wind was too strong and cold(d) they were directly in front of the hurricane’s center3 When they reached the centre of the hurricane, the winds (b).(a) became stronger(b) stopped completely(c) changed direction(d) became weaker4 Passing through the centre of the hurricane caused (a).(a) enormously large and dangerous waves(b) fierce wind and rain(c) a large number of smaller waves(d) the Petite Jeanne to turn the wrong way5 The writer says that (c).(a) he doesn’t know where the Petite Jeanne is(b) he doesn’t know how the Petite Jeanne survived(c) the Petite Jeanne was broken into pieces(d) he fell off the Petite Jeanne4 Look at the sentences from the passage. Most people have seen the (2) splash of high waves during bad weather, but tsunamis are strong enough to (3) smash houses and other buildings along the shore, and can (4) jerk people and animals off their feet and carry them out to sea. Even a (5) muscular person is probably not strong enough to resist the force of a tsunami by holding onto a tree or other support. People sometimes mistakenly think that tsunamis are caused by (6) hurricanes or other storms, but that is actually not true. Instead, tsunamis are usually caused by earthquakes, usually at sea. If you ever suspect you are in an area that is on the (7) verge of being hit by a tsunami, you should move to higher land as quickly as possible.7 Replace the underlined words with the correct form of the following words.1 One of the pleasures of deep-sea diving is swimming through schools of countless colourful fish.(multitudinous)2 The drinking fountain shot up a stream of water that splashed my face. (spout)3 Flying a kite takes practice. For a beginner, it is not easy to control it. (bridle)4 The ladder was set at a right angle to the side of the ship. Identify the real items in the passage which the writer compares with the objects below.• a nightmare – the confusion and horror of the wind• a kite – wind•sand – wind•corks – the arrangement and action of the sea anchor•mud – the waves / spouts of water and their motion•explosions – splashes of water / waves10 Check (¸) the type of book you think the passage is taken from. Give reasons for your choice.√ a travel magazine√ a short storyan autobiographya book about learning to saila history bookA short story. It is possible it is from an exciting autobiography though the focus is less on the writer than onthe storm itself. It could also be from a travel magazine but their focus is more on pleasurable experiences than deadly storms. The descriptive style creates excitement, suspense and even fear in the reader – thesort of effects adventure stories seek to induce. Extreme experiences would fit badly into a book of sailing instruction. History is not normally written in the first person.Developing critical thinking11 Work in pairs and discuss the questions.1 Why does the writer spend three paragraphs describing the wind, and then say that the wind isimpossible to describe? The less something can be described adequately, the more different ways we need to use to try. Perhapsby amassing words and comparisons we can go some way towards achieving a description.2 How can sailors avoid such experiences as this one?The passage comes from a century ago. Ships can now receive constant weather updates and should beable to avoid tropical storms.3 What types of extreme weather make unsafe travelling conditions?Almost all – too much rain leads to slippery surfaces and the risk of landslips and flooding. Duststorms reduce visibility. Snow and ice make road surfaces dangerous with cars skidding out of control.High winds endanger large vehicles. And extreme weather at sea may be dangerous to ships.4 What types of extreme weather have you experienced?• I live near a major river which some summers turns into a frightening torrent.• My part of the country has deep snow and intense cold. Travel has to be planned very carefully.•I n Fujian we experience super typhoons with winds like those described in the passage, and rainwhich is more like a waterfalls from the sky than normal rain.1。

This means money in the bank.”So I phoned my broker.“I want to place a trade. I want to short 1,500 shares of ABC.“I’m sorry, Mr. Junkie,”he said, “I can’t process that for you. Your account is cash account. You need a margin account to short a stock. Junkie. For example, let’s say thatBCD Enterprises is a software company that has introduced a new video game into the market. What is the passage mainly concerned with?C) The influence of shareholders’buying and selling on a company.2. Which of the following is NOT the same as a shareholder?B) A person selling shares on behalf of others.3. What may affect a company’s stock price?D) All of the above.4. According to the passage, which of the following is true if a company’s product is good?A) The company’s stock price may go up.5. Why does the speaker mention BCD Enterprises?D) BCD is used as an example to illustrate the stock market principlesSpeaking OutMODEL 1 The stock market is driven by fear and greed. Chris: Nora!Nora: Hey Chris. Why the big grin? You look like the cat that swallowed the canary.Chris: Even better. An uncle I hardly knew passes away and left an inheritance of $100,000. Sonow I’m thinking of making some investments. Nora: Good idea, thouh it would be more fun if we spent it together. What sort of investment doyou have in mind?Chris: The stock market is looking attractive. It’s been a bear market for several years now, andI think stock prices are pretty depressed. Nora: The decling market has investors depressed, too.Chris: But all things work in cycles. A bear market will eventually be followed by a bull market. Nora: That’s sure. I’ve been reading that investors are coming back to the market, andthat will drive up the value of stocks.Chris: I believe the market is picking up.Nora: But there’s still a risk. Wars, weather problems—all these impact incestor s’confidence.Chris: I know what you mean. Now Your TurnA:I’ve saved a lot of money over the past years, and now I’d like to invest it for a profit.B:What sort of investment do you have in mind?A:The stock market is lookingattractive. It’s been a bear market for several years now, and I think stock prices are pretty depressed.B:The falling market has discouraged many investors. A: But all things work in cycles. A bear market will eventually be followed by a bull market.B:That’s true. When the market does touch its bottom, it’ll rebound.A:I hope the investors will soon come back to the market and drive it up.B: But there’re still risks. Wars, weather problems—all these affect buyers’confidence. We’re not sure if the market has reached its bottom.A:The bear market has lasted over four years; I think it’s time for it to pick up.B:It’s really hard to say. The Japanese stock market has had a bear run of about ten years.A:Really?B:And when NASDAQ fell from 5,000 points to 3,000 points, some people believe it was a goldenopportunity to enter the market. Then the market plunged.A:So the stock market is really risky. I may lose money.B:And maybe even your shirts.A:Well, perhaps I’d better put my money on the bank. The stock has to be launched.Helen:You know, this has been a privately owned company since we first opened last year and, tobe honest with you, I’m inclined in keepingin that way.Bill:But the market is changing rapidly, and we need to think long term and take proactive measure;otherwise, we’ll find ourselves behind thecompetition.Helen:That’s a good point; perhaps I should be more open—minded about this.Bill:Don’t you think you’re a little short of funds at the moment?Helen:That’s true.Bill:You simply can’t afford to upgrade your facilities without considerable outsideinvestment. The bank won't lend you the money. Helen:I haven’t tried it.Bill:Even if it did, the interest rate for that much capital would be more we could afford.I’mconvinced, the only way to generate the fundswe need is to go public.Helen:What should I do then?Bill:A consultant will be coming in next week to explain the registration procedure for an IPO. Helen:That’s great because I want to have a thorough understanding of what this entailsbefore any decisions are made.Bill:The important point is that you have to demonstrate you’re financially qualified tobe listed on the stock market. Now Your TurnA: Mr. Smith, though your company has grown fast few years, the market is changing the rapidly. So you need to think the long term and take proactive measures; otherwise, you’ll find it behind the competition.B: You’re quite right, but can you be more specificabout what we must do?A: Don’t you think your company is a bit short of funds to expand production at the moment.B: That’s right.A: You simply can’t afford to upgrade your facilities without large external investments.B: Perhaps I have to borrow money from the bank.A: It won’t lend you so much money.B: I haven’t tried it.A: Even if you got a loan, the interest rate for large sum would be more than you can afford. I’m convinced, the only way to gather funds you need is to go to public.B: What should I do then?A: Let me explain the requirements for an IPO.B: I’m all ears. I’ll try to go through the Registration procedure to get our company listed. MODEL 3 Nothing is certain n the stock marketSusan: Hey, Chris, have you read the paper today? Chris: No. why? What’s up?Susan:The store market has dropped again.Chris: Oh, no! Not again! How many points did it lose this time?Susan: One hundred.Chris: Let’s see…that’s a drop of three percent.Well, there goes the money I was going to use to buy a new car.Susan: Before you get upset, I think you should look at the stock listings for today.Chris: What for?Susan: Well, some stocks actually gained, especiallytelecom stocks.Chris: Let me see that paper. You’re right! My stock went up five percent overnight! That’s great! Susan: For now, anyway. It may plunge tomorrow. Chris: you’re right. I’m going to call my broker cash in my stocks. I’m not taking any more changes with my savings.Susan: You’re wisher than most people I know.Sometimes it’s better to play it safe. Now Your TurnA: Hey, Jack, I hear you become a millionaire by investing in the stock market. But I always lose money in the market. Can you give me a few tips? B: First of all, let’s look at the stock listing in today’s newspaper.A: Wow, the stock market dropped again.B: What stock did you buy?A: BCD.B: How many points did it lose this time?A: More than a hundred.B: Let’s see…That’s a drop of nearly five percent. A: Oh, there goes a lot of my money. I’m thinkingabout pulling out of the market.B: Before you get upset, I’d like to give you some advice.A: What’s that?B: Well, the market is cyclical. Through you’re losing money now, your stock may gain in future.Personally, I believe your stock is a good one. You’d better keep it until it goes up one day.A: So I can’t make money in a short time?B: Let’s look at XYZ stock. It’s now a junk stock, but it’s been low for a long time. It may climb up at any moment.A: So, I’ll buy it and wait for it to go up.B: And cash in your stock when it reaches a point that is high enough to give you a profit. My basic principle is to buy at the bottom and sell at the peak.A: I see. I’ll buy low and sell high. But what if XYZ plunges again after I buy it?B: You have to take changes. There’s always risk in the stock market.Let’s TalkGregory: I’ve been thinking about getting into the stock market, but I don’t know where tostart. What do you know about buying stocks? Sylvia: Well, I have a few investments, so Iknow a little about it. Now it is probably a goodtime to invest. The market is low; pricesare probably pretty good.Gregory:So you mean it’s high time to enter the market? What kind of stock do you suggest? Sylvia: I won’t recommend any specific stock. You have to make the decision on your own. Ifyou want to make money quickly, you couldtry speculating.Gregory: What do you mean by speculating?Sylvia: You buy stocks that go up quickly for a fast profit.Gregory: Isn’t that risky? Stocks that go up fast also tend to go down fast.Sylvia:You just have to guess how high they’ll go, and then sell when you think they are aboutto come down. If you guess right, you canmake lots of money in the blink of an eye.Gregory:But I hear that many people guess wrong. When they think the market is already verylow, they start to buy. Then the marketcontinues to drop.Sylvia: In that case you will lose your shirt. But to make money, you have to take changes.Gregory:Hmm, I’m not much of a gambler.Sylvia:So you probably want to stick to blue chip stocks for a guarantee return on yourinvestment.Gregory: That sounds right up my alley.Gregory is thinking about getting into the stock market and wants to know how to buy stocks. Sylvia say the market is low, so prices are probably pretty good.Gregory sees it is high time to enter the market. SylviaSuggest speculating, which means buying stocks that go up quickly and then sellingquickly for a fast profit.Gregory finds it risky because stocks that go up fast also tend to go down fast.Sylvia says that he has to guess how high theywill go and then sells when he thinksthey’re about to come down.Gregory hears that many people guess wrong. When they start to buy, the market continues todrop.Sylvia says that, to make money, he has to take changes.Gregory admits that he is not much of a gambler. Sylvia suggests that he stick to the blue chip stocks for a guaranteed return on hisinvestment.DiscussionA: I’m renting an apartment. If you go on like this, I’ll never have an apartment of my own. So I’m thinking buying an apartment, but I don’t know whether it’s good time to invest in property.B: Soon it’ll be high time to buy houses. There’s been good news for buyers lately.A: What’s it?B: in the light of the speculative investment in real estate, the government has recently issued a number of rules. For example, those who sellnewly—bought apartment have to pay a tax. So probably fewer people are willing to speculate in the real estate market, and the housing prices will drop.A: I have to wait and see. I would be glad even if the prices just remain stable. Any other good news? B: Some people propose bypassing the real estate developers. Shall I buy it next week or next month?B: You just have to guess how low the prices will go, and then buy at the right time.A: It’s a bit risky because I may guess wrong. After I buy an apartment, the price may plunge again.B: You have to take changes and make the decision onyour own.A: Hmm, I’m not much of a gambler. You know I’ve been married for sixty years now, and I’ve been your client for five.”“Yes, go on.”I said encouragingly.“Well, my wife Lucie has a sort of phobia about the market. I guess you want the money because the market is going down.”“No, John, I want the money because she ordered a new mattress, and it is being delivered in two days.”Task 3:A Stock Market CrashA stock market crash is a dramatic loss of shares of corporations. Crashes often follow speculative stock market bubbles such as the dot-com boom. After the most famous crash in 1929, known as the Black Thursday when the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 50%, there came the Great Depression. The following years saw the Dow drop a total of over 85%. There was also a crash on Monday, October 19, 1987, known in financial circles as the Black Monday, when the Dow lost 22%of its value in a single day, bringing to an end a five-year bull run. The pattern was repeated across the world. The stock market downturn of 2002 was part of a larger bear market that took the NASDAQ 75%from its highs and broader indices down 30%.Stock market crashes are driven by panic as much as by economics factors. They often follow stock market bubbles. So long as the prospect of further daily drops in the value stocks continues, those who invest in equities will be discouraged. If few people are willing to make further investments, abear market is expected to persist.News ReportWorsening Bank AssetsMany of the traditional quantitative indicators suggest that bank asset quality is deteriorating, and that supervisors therefore need to be more sentitive to problems at individual banks, both currently and in the months ahead. After rebuilding capital andliquidity in the early 1990s, followed by several years of post-World War II record profits and very strong loan growth, our banks now have prudent capital and reserve positions.

Unfortunately, people only started to listen until it was almost too late. Deforestation occurs when areas with many trees (forests) are converted to areas withfew or no trees. Why does this happen It can happen for several reasons, some of themnatural and some of them caused by people.Deforestation can occur naturally as a result of forest fires, severe weather, or naturaldisasters (such as volcanic eruptions or tsunamis). It can also occur as a result ofcommercial logging, urban sprawl, or the need for open land for agriculture, livestockgrazing, or mining. Whatever the cause, deforestation has many effects, and some ofthem can be quite serious.Deforestation obviously destroys the environment and kills the plants living in theaffected area. It also removes the habitat for countless other animal species. Therefore, deforestation reduces biodiversity and accelerates the pace of extinction. It can also negatively affect climate patterns by disrupting the natural balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide. In addition, deforestation alters the amount of water in the soil and can create an environment more vulnerable to severe floods.Tropical rainforests once covered nearly 14 percent of the world's land surface. Today, because of deforestation, they only cover 6 percent. Scientists and researchers believe that, unless deforestation is slowed, all of the world's rainforests could be gone in 40 years. South America's Amazon rainforest, the largest of Earth's remaining rainforests, contains one-fifth of the world's freshwater and produces more than 20 percent of the world's oxygen. As the environmentalists and conservationists have been asking for years, can we really afford to continue cutting down trees41. Which of the following would be the best title for this passageA. They are each preserved in their own way, but one of the most common ways stories have survived for so many generations isthroughgathered together and told tales of gods, goddesses, and their adventures. Thanks tothe tradition, we are fortunate enough to still have these storiesof GreekObviously, stories are told differently each time they are told. This is part of their charm. Stories are ultimately formed by the storytellers, who are free to include as littleor as much as they desire. A simple story about a boy travelling to the stream for a bucket of water could be very boring, or it could turn into an epic adventure that might take hours to tell. For many myths and legends, the word of mouth tradition is the best way to hear them. Othermediums, such as books and films, just aren't a(n) way to experience the stories. Their magic lies in the ability of a storyteller tocreate suspense, drama, and humor through the telling.Sadly, this art form is quickly becomingup listening to bedtime stories which is a form of the oral tradition, but sometime betweenchildhood and adulthood, many become to the form and seek out immediate gratification in movies and video games. Nowadays, many children have toomuch to sit still and listen to a story told aloud. It's an unfortunate state of affairs when people are more than willingto of oral storytelling entirely.Your answer Correct answer(31) storytelling(32) oral(33) mythology(34) embellishment(35) appropriate(36) captivating(37) extinct(38) indifferent(39) impatience(40) disposePart III: Reading ComprehensionQuestions 41 to 45 are based on the following passage. Here's a cautionary tale that should serve as a warning to every driver. One warm summer evening, a young woman went out for dinner with some of her friends. Let's call this young woman Susan. Susan and her friends stayed for a few drinks after dinner, and, before they knew it, it's gotten quite late. The friends paid their bill, walked out to the parking lot and their cars, and said their goodbyes to one another.Susan got into her car and began to drive away. Her home was off in the country, so she soon found herself driving along a deserted highway. After a few miles, she noticed a pair of headlights in her rear-view mirror. The other car approached very quickly with its turn signal on. Since there were no other cars on the road, it was going to pass her. Suddenly, the car swerved back and stayed very close to Susan's car. The headlights shone brightly in her rear-view mirror, and then the lights started to flash. At this point, Susan wais getting a little scared. The other car was dangerously close, the lights kept flashing—on, off, bright, dim—and the car kept swerving back and forth behind her. Susan struggled to keep her eyes on the road in front of her and fought the urge to look in her rear-view mirror at the bright lights of the car following her. Finally, she saw the sign for her exit and turned off the highway. However, the car continued to follow her and continued to flash its lights. Susan was beginning to be terrified. She took an indirect route to her house, making many turns. Through every turn, stop sign, and red light, the other car continued to follow. She knew she had no choice. She eventually drove to her house and pulled into her driveway. Of course, the other car followed her and came to a stop right behind her. She knew her only hope was to make a run for it and try to get inside her house so she could get to a phone. She opened the car door and ran as fast as she could. As she ran, she heard another voice scream, "Lock your door and call the police!"From her window, Susan could see that the driver of the other car didn't leave. She was scared stiff. When the police finally arrived, the horrible truth was revealed. The man in the other carwas actually trying to save her! As he pulled up behind her on the highway, his headlights illuminatedthe dark figure of a man in the back seat of Susan's car. I seem to remember that you only want the work placement for six weeks. Is that right?KateYes, it is.InterviewerWhy is that?KateWell, to be honest, I’m planning to go back to the States and spend time with my family.InterviewerThat’s understandable. Now, tell me, what questions do you have?KateI’ve got some idea but obviously, what I’d like to know is, what does the job involve?InterviewerOf course. Well, for the first few weeks, your main responsibility would be to read files and summarize them. We’d also want you to do some research for us. How does that sound? Rather boring? KateNo, not at all. I think I’d learn a lot. InterviewerGood, well … you’ll be taking your first year exams soon, won’t you?KateYes, in a few weeks’ time. Many of them do this during a gap year between finishing school and starting in higher education. Volunteers learn to solve problems, work together as a team and develop their personalities. Communities in need get help they couldn’t afford to pay for. In Britain, oneof the main agencies for voluntary work is Raleigh International. It arranges for thousands of people, aged between 17 and 25, to help out in their own country or abroad. This group of 100 people has just arrived at the base camp in Costa Rica. In the next ten weeks, they are taking part in three different projects. They’re going to help to build astorehouse for the important sesame crop. If they have more storage, the villagers will be able to make more money from selling sesame. Volunteers also take part in a survival activity. Tomorrow, this group is trekking to the summit of Costa Rica’s highestmountain, Mount Chirripo. At the end of the ten weeks, the volunteers are proud that their efforts have helped to improve the lives of the people and the environment of Costa Rica and Nicaragua.1. 17 to 252. 100 people3. Speaker 1 It’s not going to ease up! So what can I do for you?Speaker 2Well, next year’s my final year and I need to think seriously about my career. Speaker 1I would agree with you there. Let’s havea look at your file. You’re readingEnglish, you’re getting good grades, you got a merit in your first year exams and you’re on track for a 2:1 according toyour tutor. Have you any idea what you’d like to do?Speaker 2I’m very drawn to publishing. I read a lotof novels and I’m quite a good critic. Speaker 1That’s a good start. I’m guessing you’d like to be a literary editor?Speaker 2That’s right.Speaker 1Well, I should tell you that literary editing is a hard profession to get into and it doesn’t pay very well, unless you’re at the top. You could think a bit more broadly than just literature. For example, there’s educational publishing, professional publishing and there’s also specialist publishing, such as sports.Speaker 2I’m not very sporty.Speaker 1Well, I understand sport may not be your thing but … you get the idea. Speaker 2Yes, I do. So how do I start?Speaker 1First of all, you need a good degree but even before that I would contact publishers and see if they’ll offer youwork experience. You won’t get paid, ofcourse, but it’s good for your CV andyou’ll learn something about the business.Speaker 2Right. How do I find out who to write to? Speaker 1All the publishers are listed in the Publisher’s Yearbook. There’s a copy in the library in the careers section, so you can use that for a start. Check the job adverts in the newspapers and maybe look at the specialist publishing trade journal, the Bookseller. That has job ads as well.Speaker 2Thank you.Speaker 1The other thing you might do is check the Internet – sometimes, the publishers’websites offer internships or job experience opportunities for new graduates.Speaker 2 I’ll do that.Speaker 1One other thing. Graduates studying Englishalways want to be an editor, they’re quite romantic about it, but thereare other departments – marketing, sales, and the production side. Don’t dismiss those.Speaker 2Thanks for the advice, it’s very helpful. But it’s literary editing that I want to do. Speaker 1Well, I wish you the best. Let me know how you get on. And good luck with your exams.1.The five pieces of advice he career adviser gives the student are 1,2,4,7 and 82.1. The woman is to take her second year exams.2. She wants to do literary editing.3. However, we’re going to look at one of the biggest technological marvels of the 21st century. The Airbus A380 is the world’s biggest commercial aircraft. New technologies were used in thedesign, engineering and manufacture of this amazing “superjumbo”. Finally, some sections are built in France, so Airbus has its own factories in Britain, France, Germany and Spain. Now for the moment of truth, with 154 planes ordered by the world’s airlines, the big question was:“Will it fly at all?” On the day of the first flight, thousands of people gathered at Toulouse Airport to see the superjumbo fly for the first time. They were not disappointed. The biggest airliner in the history of aviation took to the air as planned.Topics mentioned are: 1, 3, 5, 6 and 8 2.1.France2. China3. Britain4. That is the theory behind a new book on the brain by Professor Susan Greenfield. The book is called Tomorrow’s People:How 21st Century Technology Is Changing the Way We Think and Feel. Greenfield suggests that advances in technology, and the effect they are having on our lives, are changing our very idea of who we are. In other words, they are changing our identity. And this, she thinks, is a very dangerous thing. I’mjoined in the studio by Dr Jane Ferris, Professor of Neuroscience at Imperial College London and Brian Thomas, Professor of Surgery at University College Hospital. Let’s begin at thebeginning. Brian, how do brains work? BrianWell, a brain is a mass of neurons, and these neurons make connections with each other –billions of connections –and store information. We all havebasically the same brain structure. It’s what we do with our brain that makes the difference. And Greenfield believes that the result is that these technologies may be changing the way young people think and even causing changes in their identity.PresenterWhy exactly?JaneBecause the information that an individual receives from computer games, for example, is very different from reality. And she fears that because of this, these technologies may be changing our sense of reality – what wesee as real –and may even reduce it. And if this is happening, the result may well be changes in our behaviour. PresenterCan you give an example?JaneRisk-taking is a good example – we may start taking more risks.BrianBut she admits there’s no conclusive evidence of this.JaneThat’s true.BrianI agree that Greenfield asks some interesting questions, but to say that technology can influence society to think and behave differently –we needmuch more research before we can accept this.2.1. presenter2. Aren’t they more trouble than they’re worth? Speaker 2I think that’s one of the stupidest questions I’ve ever heard!Speaker 1I thought you might say that.Speaker 2Of course we need computers. How can anyone say otherwise? They’verevolutionized our lives. I mean, I don’tknow where to begin, they’ve changed our lives so much. Look. To start with, computers mean we can communicate with anyone anywhere in the world almost instantly.Speaker 1That’s not quite true.Speaker2Well, you know what I mean. I can send a document from London to Sydney in five minutes. If I want to conference with people there’s webcam –we cansee each other on camera – do you really want me to go on?Speaker 1But why is it so useful, to be able to send a document to Australia in five minutes? What does it actually achieve? Speaker 2It speeds things up. I don’t have to put the document in an envelope, stick a stamp on it and go to the post office, stand in a queue … knowing it will takeanother three days to get there – at least. Speaker 1But why the hurry?Speaker 2It’s good to get things done quickly. Speaker 1Why?Speaker 2Because you get more done that way. Speaker 1 But is that really necessarily better? Life moves so fast these days, don’t you think we should slow down a bit, enjoy life a bit more?Speaker 2I think computers allow us to enjoy life more. Before we had computers if you wanted to research you had to go out and get a book. That took such a long time.Speaker 1So what? We just did things more slowly, that’s all. Are you saying we have more time now than we did? Everyone says that actually life is moving faster and faster. And what about all the problems that computers create?Speaker 2For example?Speaker 1Identity theft is a big one. You have to admit that identify theft has increased massively since we got the Internet. Speaker 2The Internet isn’t the only reason why identity theft has increased.Speaker 1You know as well as I do that it’s a big reason …Speaker 2Yes, but …6.1. Do we really need computer?2. Unit 10Part OneBoy A: It actually seems to me that agriculture will continue to change just like before.Boy B: Yes, it looks like there are at least two major trends. Some farms are becoming larger and more hi-tech based, and at the same time, some farms are becoming smaller and more intensively managed.Girl A: That is to say the larger farms and the smaller farms must experience bigger changes to be able to stand in a more competitive position?Girl B: That's certainly true. Since conditions differ so much from one place to another, it would be necessary to examine each type of farm and decide which agricultural practices would be most efficient.Boy A: Right. Well there are actually two types of agricultural modern farming practices that interest me. The first one is the use of "High Tech" Precision Farming, and the second one is the use of GPS (Global Positioning System). And these really are going to take agriculture into the "Space Age".Boy B: GPS? I know GPS technology uses signals from satellites to find locations on earth. But could you explain to me how this could be used in farming?Girl A: Well, I can give you an example. My Dad has 2,000 acres of corn and soybeans on his farm. There are big differences in soil conditions within each area of the farm. GPS can find these differences, monitor them, and allows my Dad to adjust to the exact needs of each small part of the farm.Girl B: I think I can understand how computers would be so necessary to farmers who use GPS and Precision Farming. They could record and analyze the data from the satellite, and then use the information to adjust seed planting rate, fertilizer type and amount, pesticides and so on.Boy B: That sounds pretty good, and on a really large farm like your Dad's, the computer information could be used to tell the farmer where each piece of equipment was located or stored. It could also tell the farmer how much pesticide, fertilizer, etc. would be needed. Such information may allow him to manage the farm with greater efficiency.Girl A: Actually, Dad has been using most of these technologies for nearly five years. They are expensive, but it has made our farming much more efficient and profitable.Girl B: That's good for farmers like your Dad, but in China these high-tech methods like GPS would be too expensive and not so useful. Our farms are much smaller, more labor intensive, and less highly mechanized.Boy B: Well, in that case, it's better for your farms to consider ecosystem management. For example, I just read an article that says in some rice farms of China, farmers raise fish and ducks in the rice paddies to control insect pests and use the natural fertilizer from fish and ducks. Also, some of these farmers sell the fish and ducks for meat. This gives additional income to the small farm.Boy A: These examples of changes in modern farm practices show that farming will require better educated farmers. It's necessary for them to understand and use more efficient technology aimed specifically at their type of farming.Girl B: That's right. So we must improve education for all levels of society who work in agriculture, from scientists to farm workers.Exercise 2A√ B C D√ E√ F G HExercise 31.hi-tech based intensively managed2.experience stand3.signals locations4.allows needs5.equipment stored6.raise control natural7.better educated farmers8.levels scientists farm workersPart TwoListening IThe PotatoThe white potato is the most important vegetable ever grown. It is a basic food for millions of people. Potatoes are grown in at least 80 countries in the world. When the Spanish came to South America in the middle of the 1500s, they found the white potato was grown by the people there. They took potatoes back to Spain. By the end of the 16th century, the potato was common in Spain and Italy. It grew well in other countries in Europe as well.It is believed that the potato was introduced into Britain at some time between 1585 and 1587. Soon afterward, it was taken to Ireland. It grew so well in Ireland that it became the staple food of the country. But in 1845 and 1846, there was a terrible potato disease in Ireland. The disease killed almost all the potato crop. About 1, 500, 000 people in Ireland died of starvation. The spread of the potato throughout the world is one of the miracles of agriculture. The potato was introduced into Europe only about 400 years ago. Every year, he meets other pumpkin growers from across North America. They have contests to see who can grow the biggest pumpkin. The winners get prizes, such as money or trips to exciting places.People started to grow big pumpkins more than 100 years ago. About 20 years ago, Howard Dill decided to have a contest. He brought his biggest pumpkin to the contest. It weighed 438 pounds. Now, every year, people bring bigger pumpkins. Two years ago, another pumpkin grower set a world record. His pumpkin weighed 1, 601 pounds! One of the pumpkin contests is at a festival called Pumpkinfest. At Pumpkinfest, people bring giant pumpkins and other giant vegetables. There is a contest for the biggest watermelon and the biggest squash. There is even a contest for the world's biggest flowers. Many of the giant fruits and vegetables weigh more than 500 pounds. Most of these plants and animals are too small for the unaided human eye to see. They provide a basic food for many larger animals.Plankton has been described as the equivalent of the grasses that grow on the dry land continents. In potential food value, however, plankton far outweighs that of the land grasses. One scientist has estimated that while grasses of the world produce about 49 billion tons of valuable carbohydrates each year, the sea's plankton produces more than twice as much.Despite its enormous food potential, little effort was made until recently to farm plankton as we farm grasses on land. Now marine scientists have at last begun to study this possibility, especially as the sea's resources become even more important as a means of feeding an expanding world population. No one yet has seriously suggested that "plankton-burgers" will soon become popular around the world. As a possible farmed supplementary food source, however, plankton is gaining considerable interest among marine scientists.Exercise 11.T2.F3.T4.F5.FExercise 21.A2.C3.C4.BPractice TwoAnyone who has ever had a garden, an orchard, or a farm knows the importance of honeybees. They fly from flower to flower gathering nectar to make honey. More importantly, they pollinate crops. As a beekeeper for more than 30 years, I am a big admirer of these little workers. Here in North Carolina, if we didn't have honeybees, we would lose at least 47 million dollars a year in field and garden crops. Strawberries, watermelons, corn, squash, beans—all these plus more than 100 other important crops from fruits to nuts couldn't exist without pollination by the honeybee. Indeed, something like 50 percent of wildlife food also depends on honeybees.Shortly before spring my neighbors rent beehives and move them to their apple orchards. I'm lucky that the bees in my hives consider my apple orchards home. It's amazing when you think about it. Each worker bee will visit hundreds of flowers in a single day. Imagine if we humans had to do that much running around.Over the years I've noticed that different hives have different personalities. Some are easygoing. With no protective clothing on, you can open them any time and watch them work. Other hives are just the opposite. You must be prepared andwell-protected when you visit them or you will be stung.Exercise 21.F2.T3.F4.T 5,F 6,T 7.T 8.FPractice ThreeIt is likely that farming a century from now will be more intensive—that is, the space used to grow food, particularly fruits and vegetables, will be reduced. This change in farming techniques will come about for many reasons. One reason is that the shortageof water will be more severe. A second is that genetic engineers will develop plants that require less water, produce more fruits, and are disease-resistant. Thirdly, a more healthful diet will increase our consumption of foods that require relatively little space for growth such as vegetables, fish and poultry. At the same time, foods that require large growing areas—such as beef and pork—will be less popular.A pound of beans has as much protein as two pounds of steak, but the steak's flavor makes it a more popular food. In the future, people will probably develop plants that contain the beneficial proteins and flavor of meat without the harmful fats that are believed to be related to heart disease. When they do, eating foods that are good for us will not seem so hard.Exercise 11.B2.D 3,C 4.B 5.AExercise 21.reduced2.techniques3.Genetic engineers4.popular 4.as much asPractice FourOne hundred fifty years ago, big herds of buffalo roamed the midwestern and western grasslands in the U.S. In a rather short time they were killed off by thousands of people moving into their territory. Soon they were replaced by herds of cattle. Buffalo were seldom seen except in national parks and other protected areas. Now this is beginning to change once more. As modern ranchers have learned how delicious and also nutritious buffalo meat is, some of them are raising buffalo instead of cattle. In the western states, such as Colorado, where people can buy buffalo meat directly from the ranchers, it is gaining in popularity. One ranch family in eastern Colorado keeps a herd of 100 buffalo. They sell all of their meat directly to consumers by attending farmers markets during the summer and freezing it to sell to people who come to their home to buy it. Because the buffalo do well on the ranch's grassland, expenses are low. The grass is eaten fresh during the growing season, and some is cut, dried and made into hay for the winter. The family feels their profits are higher than if they had cattle. If buffalo meat continues to gain in popularity, once more people may see big herds of these gigantic animals throughout the western states.Exercise 11.F2.F3.T4.F5.FExercise 21.killed off2.replaced3.national parks4.taste5.lower6.higher7.than8.insteadofPart FourSection IBefore 1492, no one living in Europe ate corn cakes or corn bread. They didn't know corn existed.Up to this time, corn grew only in the Americas. Scientists believe corn was originally cultivated by Indians in the highlands of Mexico thousands of years ago. The Indians discovered that corn was good to eat and very nutritious. As Indian groups migrated north they brought corn with them. American Indians were growing corn in many parts of North America long before the first arrival of European explorers and traders.Christopher Columbus and the explorers that followed him took corn back to Europe and introduced it to the world. Native American Indians taught European colonists to grow many varieties of corn. As time went on, the new settlers to America began to depend on corn as one of the most important farm crops.Corn is good for feeding pigs, cattle and other livestock, and many other products are made from corn, too.Today, thousands of uses for corn products have been discovered, and more uses are being found each day. One of the things pigs like to do is to root around the ground for bits of food to eat. In fields and woods, they will spend hours doing this. Once confined, though, they get fed just once a day. The food is finished in a few minutes and for the rest of the day they are bored so they do things like chewing doors or each other. Now researchers are getting pigs to play with a food ball. This looks like a very large football but is much heavier. It is filled with pig food which drops out, a little at a time, as it is rolled over. The curious pig moves the ball around. Each time it does this, a little bit of food drops out. The pig has to push the ball for several hours before it gets enough to eat. This is much better for the animal than eating all its food down in a few minutes, and the exercise involved helps keep it healthier. The food ball is now being tried with dogs and might also be used in zoos.Part A1.T2.F3.F4.F5.TPart B1.unnatural2.the ground3.once4.curious5.healthierSection III(A father and son, Tom and Mike, are telling another group of farmers about the changes they are making on their farm.)Tom: When Mike graduated from North Carolina State University with his master's degree in agricultural business management, I thought he would take a job with a big agricultural business.Mike: I surprised Dad, though, as I really wanted to come back to work with him on our farm. Dad has always made a good living for us, but I thought we could make it even better if we bought more land and added some different types of crops.Tom: I agreed that we couldn't really compete with the Midwestern states in yields of corn and soybeans, so I listened to Mike's ideas. Now in addition we grow tobacco, wheat, hay, oats, cattle, pigs, horses, strawberries, tomatoes, blackberries and peaches.Mike: With such variety, we can be quite sure that even in bad weather years we will have income. Mom and my wife Bonnie also help a lot. They are in charge of the strawberries, blackberries, tomatoes and peaches. They are talking about adding more types of fruit next year.Tom: Another good idea Mike had was for us to build some greenhouses on our farm. Since tobacco is the major crop in North Carolina, we raise tobacco plants from seeds and sell them to our neighbors as well as plant some of them ourselves.Mike: So far Dad and I make a good team. Shareholders may make money or lose money by selling stocks that they own, depending on whether the price has gone up or down since they bought their shares. A company’s stock price may be affected by market or economic conditions. For example, let’s say that BCD Enterprises is a software company that has introduced a new video game into the market. Or, it could be a good time, but BCD introduced it at a time when peopleare spending less on leisure products, and hardly anyone is buying the game. So it’s reported that BCD is losing money because of this new product. Then the stock price for BCD Enterprises may go down if a number of shareholders decide to sell their shares.1. What is the passage mainly concerned withC) The influence of shareholders’ buying and selling on a company.2. Which of the following is NOT the same as a shareholderB) A person selling shares on behalf of others.3. What may affect a company’s stock priceD) All of the above.4. According to the passage, which of the following is true ifa company’s product is goodA) The company’s stock price may go up.5. Why does the speaker mention BCD EnterprisesD) BCD is used as an example to illustrate the stock market principlesSpeaking OutMODEL 1 The stock market is driven by fear and greed. Chris: Nora!Nora: Hey Chris. Why the big grin You look like the cat that swallowed the canary.Chris: Even better. An uncle I hardly knew passes away and left an inheritance of $100,000. So now I’m thinking of making some investments.Nora: Good idea, thouh it would be more fun if we spent it together. What sort of investment do you have in mind Chris: The stock market is looking attractive. It’s been a bear market for several years now, and I think stock prices are pretty depressed.Nora: The decling market has investors depressed, too. Chris: But all things work in cycles. A bear market will eventually be followed by a bull market.Nora: That’s sure. I’ve been reading that investors are coming back to the market, and that will drive up thevalue of stocks.Chris: I believe the market is picking up.Nora: But there’s still a risk. Now Your TurnA: I’ve saved a lot of money over the past years, and now I’d like to invest it for a profit.B: What sort of investment do you have in mindA: The stock market is looking attractive. Wars, weather problems—all these affect buyers’ confidence. We’re not sure if the market has reached its bottom.A: The bear market has lasted over four years; I think it’s time for it to pick up.B: It’s really hard to say. The Japanese stock market has had a bear run of about ten years.A: ReallyB: And when NASDAQ fell from 5,000 points to 3,000 points, some people believe it was a golden opportunity to enter the market. Then the market plunged.A: So the stock market is really risky. I may lose money.B: And maybe even your shirts.A: Well, perhaps I’d better put my money on the bank. The stock has to be launched.Helen: You know, this has been a privately owned company since we first opened last year and, to be honest with you, I’minclined in keeping in that way.Bill: But the market is changing rapidly, and we need to think long term and take proactive measure; otherwise, we’llfind ourselves behind the competition.Helen: That’s a good point;perhaps I should be moreopen—minded about this.Bill: Don’t you think you’re a little short of funds at the momentHelen: That’s true.Bill: You simply can’t afford to upgrade your facilities without considerable outside investment. The bank won't lend you the money.Helen: I haven’t tried it.Bill: Even if it did, the interest rate for that much capital would be more we could afford.I’m convinced, the only way to generate the funds we need is to go public. Helen: What should I do thenBill: A consultant will be coming in next week to explain the registration procedure for an IPO.Helen: That’s great because I want to have a thorough understanding of what this entails before any decisionsare made.Bill: The important point is that you have to demonstrate you’re financially qualified to be listed on the stock market. Now Your TurnA: Mr. Smith, though your company has grown fast few years, the market is changing the rapidly. So you need to think the long term and take proactive measures; otherwise, you’ll find it behind the competition.B: You’re quite right, but can you be more specific about what we must doA: Don’t you think your company is a bit short of funds to expand production at the moment.B: That’s right.A: You simply can’t afford to upgrade your facilities without large external investments.B: Perhaps I have to borrow money from the bank.A: It won’t lend you so much money.B: I haven’t tried it.A: Even if you got a loan, the interest rate for large sum would be more than you can afford. I’m convinced, the only way to gather funds you need is to go to public.B: What should I do thenA: Let me explain the requirements for an IPO.B: I’m all ears. I want to have a thorough understanding of what this entails before I make further decisions.A: The important point is that you have to demonstrate that you are financially qualified to be launched on the stock market. You must show you have a capital of 50 million yuan.B: Our company does have that amount of money. Are there other requirementsA: You have to prove that the company has been making a profit in the past three years. It’s also essential that there are no false financial reports.B: Ok, no problem. I’ll try to go through the Registration procedure to get our company listed.MODEL 3 Nothing is certain n the stock marketSusan: Hey, Chris, have you read the paper todayChris: No. why What’s upSusan: The store market has dropped again.Chris: Oh, no! Not again! How many points did it lose this time Susan: One hundred.Chris: Let’s see…that’s a drop of three percent.Well, there goes the money I was going to use to buy a new car. Susan: Before you get upset, I think you should look at the stock listings for today.Chris: What forSusan: Well, some stocks actually gained, especially telecom stocks.Chris: Let me see that paper. You’re right! My stock went up five percent overnight! That’s great!Susan: For now, anyway. It may plunge tomorrow.Chris: you’re right. I’m going to call my broker cash in my stocks. I’m not taking any more changes with my savings. Susan: You’re wisher than most people I know. Sometimes it’s better to play it safe. Now Your TurnA: Hey, Jack, I hear you become a millionaire by investing in the stock market. But I always lose money in the market. Can you give me a few tipsB: First of all, let’s look at the stock listing in today’s newspaper.A: Wow, the stock market dropped again.B: What stock did you buyA: BCD.B: How many points did it lose this timeA: More than a hundred.B: Let’s see…That’s a drop of nearly five percent.A: Oh, there goes a lot of my money. I’m thinking about pulling out of the market.B: Before you get upset, I’d like to give you some advice. A: What’s thatB: Well, the market is cyclical. Through you’re losing money now, your stock may gain in future. Personally, I believe your stock is a good one. You’d better keep it until it goes up one day.A: So I can’t make money in a short timeB: Let’s look at XYZ stock. It’s now a junk stock, but it’s been low for a long time. It may climb up at any moment. A: So, I’ll buy it and wait for it to go up.B: And cash in your stock when it reaches a point that is high enough to give you a profit. My basic principle is to buy at the bottom and sell at the peak.A: I see. I’ll buy low and sell high. But what if XYZ plunges again after I buy itB: You have to take changes. There’s always risk in the stock market.Let’s TalkGregory: I’ve been thinking about getting into the stock market, but I don’t know where to start. What do youknow about buying stocksSylvia: Well, I have a few investments, so I know a little about it. Now it is probably a good time to invest. The market is low; prices are probably pretty good. Gregory: So you mean it’s high time to enter the market What kind of stock do you suggestSylvia: I won’t recommend any specific stock. You have to make the decision on your own. If you want to makemoney quickly, you could try speculating.Gregory: What do you mean by speculatingSylvia: You buy stocks that go up quickly for a fast profit. Gregory: Isn’t that risky Stocks that go up fast also tend togo down fast.Sylvia: You just have to guess how high they’ll go, and then sell when you think they are about to come down. Ifyou guess right, you can make lots of money in theblink of an eye.Gregory: But I hear that many people guess wrong. When they think the market is already very low, they start tobuy. Then the market continues to drop.Sylvia: In that case you will lose your shirt. But to make money, you have to take changes.Gregory: Hmm, I’m not much of a gambler.Sylvia: So you probably want to stick to blue chip stocks fora guarantee return on your investment.Gregory: That sounds right up my alley.Gregory is thinking about getting into the stock market and wants to know how to buy stocks.Sylvia say the market is low, so prices are probably prettygood.Gregory sees it is high time to enter the market.Sylvia Suggest speculating, which means buying stocks that go up quickly and then selling quickly for a fastprofit.Gregory finds it risky because stocks that go up fast also tend to go down fast.Sylvia says that he has to guess how high they will go and then sells when he thinks they’re about to comedown.Gregory hears that many people guess wrong. When they start to buy, the market continues to drop.Sylvia says that, to make money, he has to take changes. Gregory admits that he is not much of a gambler.Sylvia suggests that he stick to the blue chip stocks fora guaranteed return on his investment.DiscussionA: I’m renting an apartment. If you go on like this, I’ll never have an apartment of my own. So I’m thinking buying an apartment, but I don’t know whether it’s good time to invest in property.B: Soon it’ll be high time to buy houses. There’s been good news for buyers lately.A: What’s itB: in the light of the speculative investment in real estate, the government has recently issued a number of rules. For example, those who sell newly—bought apartment have to pay a tax. So probably fewer people are willing to speculate in the real estate market, and the housing prices will drop. A: I have to wait and see. I would be glad even if the prices just remain stable. Any other good newsB: Some people propose bypassing the real estate developers. They want to pool their funds to build their own apartment buildings. In this way they can cut the costs by a big margin. A: Sounds interesting, though I’m not sure if it’s practical. About when do you think I should buy an apartmentB: Pretty soon. I guess the prices will fall soon.A: I want to know exactly when. Shall I buy it next week or next monthB: You just have to guess how low the prices will go, and then buy at the right time.A: It’s a bit risky because I may guess wrong. After I buy an apartment, the price may plunge again.B: You have to take changes and make the decision on your own. A: Hmm, I’m not much of a gambler. Perhaps I’ll wait and see and continue to live in the rented apartment.B: There’s also risk in this. It’s not altogether impossible that housing prices will move up a little bit. If that’s the case, you’ll have to pay even more in the future. A: My God, there are risks everywhere! So you’ve told me next to nothing.Further Listening and SpeakingTask1: what do you know about NASDAQAs the world’s largest electronic, NASDAQ is not limited to one trading location. One broker told such a story:One of my clients called me on Thursday. He was anxious and out of breath, and spoke with great urgency. He said to me, “Jone, sell it all. Sell everything, fast, right away.”I tried to explain to him that the market was cyclical, and thatin the long term stocks would return to normal. So long as the prospect of further daily drops in the value stocks continues, those who invest in equities will be discouraged. After rebuilding capital and liquidity in the early 1990s, followedby several years of post-World War II record profits and very strong loan growth, our banks now have prudent capital and reserve positions.

Unfortunately, people only started to listen until it wasalmost too late. Deforestation occurs when areas with many trees (forests)are converted to areas with few or no trees. Why does this happen It can happenfor several reasons, some of them natural and some of them caused by people. Deforestation can occur naturally as a result of forest fires, severe weather,or natural disasters (such as volcanic eruptions or tsunamis). It can alsooccur as a result of commercial logging, urban sprawl, or the need for open land for agriculture, livestock grazing, or mining. Whatever the cause, deforestation has many effects, and some of them can be quite serious.Deforestation obviously destroys the environment and kills the plants living in the affected area.
