Write your answers on the Answer Sheet.Eye Contacts in the United StatesA. There are two purposes of eye contact in the United States: getting someone’s attention and showing that you are listening to the speaker. …Using eye contact is a way of getting someone’s attention in a public place. You can use this to get the attention of a waiter or a waitress in a busy restaurant, an usher in the theater, or a sales assistant at a store. The technique is to locate the person you want, watch him or her carefully, and as soon as the person turns in your direction, look directly in his or her eyes. The waiter will come over to you. The usher will show you your seat. The server will take your money.B. Using eye contact is also important in North America to show a speaker that you are paying attention. The general American rule for conversational eye contact is to look at the speaker’s eyes the entire time he or she is speaking—that is, having his or her turn in the conversation. This tells the speaker“I’m listening to you.” If you look away even for a few seconds, the speaker may think that you are bored.Part 3 Writing an essayExample:Question 10: Write an essay on ONE of the following topics.1.Write an essay about someone you admire.2.Write a cause and effect essay about activities that contribute to good health. You should write about 150-180 words. Write the answer on your Answer Sheet. My masterConverting to be the Buddhist over 10 years, I have the chance to show my dear master in the temple. Before I stepped into the temple, I do believe that like every one the Buddhism is the religion.whenever I saw most of the people knot down in front of the Buddha and prayed something from the bottom of the heart, I was always confused that is the Buddha God? Does it really help?If praying works, Is it really fair?If It helps, when the offenders in the corruption really were assisted by Buddha,is it the Buddhism in everyone’s heart. When I am in it, I got my answer from my master. The Buddhism is not the religion , it is actually the education, it teaches the people how to correct their wrong behaviors,it teaches us how to dedicate ourselves to the others rather than always opening the hands and get something from the others. Cultivating our heart is from inside. It is not from outside surrounding. Then you will benefit from it. I did learn a lot from my master. He is not only my teacher, he is also like my parents. His great love truly warm and comfort my heart. I will follow his step and fulfill my “Buddha dream”.。

The sociolinguist might ask, for example, what kinds of things one talks about in casual conversations with a stranger. A foreigner may know English vocabulary and grammar well but may not know that one typically chats with a stranger about the weather or where one comes from, and not about what one ate that day or how much money one earns. A foreigner may be familiar with much of the culture of a North American city, but if that person divulges the real state of his or her health and feelings to the first person who says, “How are you?” he or she has much to learn about “small talk” in North American English. Similarly, North Americans tend to get confused in societies where greetings are quite different from ours. People in some other societies may ask a greeting, “Where are you going?” or “What are you cooking?” Some Americans may think such ques tions are rude; others may try to answer in excruciating detail, not realizing that only vague answers are expected, just as we don’t really expect a detailed answer when we ask people “How are you?”(qtd. from Judith Resnick & Lanny Lester, Text & Thought, pp. 194-195)A:A foreigner may be familiar with the English language but not with the appropriate topics for making small talk.B:North Americans may not respond appropriately to greetings in other societies.C:Sociolinguists are interested in how speech is used in different cultures and different social contexts, such as in making small talk and greeting people.D:Conversation differs around the world.答案: Sociolinguists are interested in how speech is used in different cultures and different social contexts, such as in making small talk and greeting people.2、You could simply wind up with tossed word salad. When a person is ill, he cannot keep up with the world of healthy people. Life begins to occur without him. Even language seems to change. What is said to a sick person does not involve him, and therefore he begins to interpret it differently. He loses touch with the outer, healthy world. His sense of isolation is increased rather than lessened by the regular visits of the doctor. The doctor labels the sick person’s disease and confines him to his special place. With tact and skill, the doctor completes the patient’s helplessness and makes final his division from the world of strong arms, sound legs, clear skin, and lungs that breathe deeply. The sick person’s only hope is to return to life again, and he clings to the thought of getting well.(qtd. from Kathleen E. Has quite an interesting storyline. The two cities are London, England and Paris, France. The action starts out with Jarvis Lorry taking a trip down the Dover Road to go to Dover, so that he can go to France. He is interrupted by Jerry Cruncher, a graverobber. On his way to Dover, Jarvis has to stop and talk to Lucie Manette. He told her that her father was still alive in France after 18 years of imprisonment in the Bastielle. Lucie is shocked by the news and travels with Jarvis to Paris, France. Dr. Manette, Lucie's father was staying with the Jacquerie, an underground movement, in the care of Madame Defarge. Dr. Manette only knew his prisoner number and that he knew the craft of shoemaking when he saw Lucie. The doctor was nursed back to health. Then we meet Charles Darnay, who is the nephew of Marquis St. Evremonde. He hates his uncle. He also supports the American Revolution. He dropped the St. Evremonde because he hated his uncle. Soon Charles meets Lucie Manette and falls in love with her. He goes back to England with her. Charles is put on trial in England for treason because of his support of the American Revolution. He is acquitted thanks to the help of an lawyer, Sydney Carton. Ironically, the two men look exactly alike. Later we find out that they love the same woman, Lucie Manette. They are complete opposites however. Charles is very clean-cut, while Sydney is an alcoholic. Sydney had so much promise, but his alcoholism hampered him from reaching it.Eventually Charles marries Lucie. They have a daughter together. Lucie remains good friends still with Sydney. Charles goes back to France and is capturedduring the Reign of Terror because he is an aristocrat. Sydney goes to France to save Charles. They switch places because they look alike. Sydney goes to the guillotine instead of Charles. The line goes, "Tis a far far better thing I do now, then I have ever done before...". Sydney died for Charles so that he could redeem himself from his drunken lifestyle.Written Assignment 2: Writing a ReportAugust 31, 20XXTo the Partners [or other appropriate terminology] Able, Baker & Co. or To John B. Able, CPAWe have performed a peer review of selected compilation engagements (report review) of the accounting practice of [Name of Firm] (the firm) for the year ended June 30,20XX.
