Making the news
Nowadays more and more people are talking about genetically modified foods ( GM foods). GM foods develop from genetically modified organisms (有机体), which have had specific changes introduced into their DNA by genetic engineering techniques. These techniques are much more precise where an organism is exposed to chemicals to create a nonspecific but stable change. For many people, the hightech production raises all kinds of environmental, ethical, health and safety problems. Particularly in countries with long farming traditions, the idea seems against nature. In fact, GM foods are already very much a part of our lives. They were first put on the market in 1996. A third of the corn and more than half the cotton grown in the U. S. last year was the product of biotechnology, according to the Department of Agriculture. More than 65 million acres of genetically modified crops will be planted in the US this year. The genetic genie is out of the bottle. However, like any new product entering the food chain, GM foods must be subjected to careful testing. In wealthy countries, the debate about biotech is not so fierce by the fact that they have a large number of foods to choose from, and a supply that goes beyond the needs. In developing countries desperate to feed fastgrowing and underfed populations, the matter is simpler and much more urgent: do the benefits of biotech outweigh the risks? The statistics on population growth and hunger are disturbing. Last year the world's population reached 6 billion. The UN states that nearly 800 million people around the world are unhealthy. About 400 million women of childbearing age don' t have enough iron, which means their babies are exposed to various birth defeats. As many as 100 million children suffer from vitamin A deficiency, a leading cause of blindness. How can biotech help? Genetic engineering is widely used to produce plants and animals with better nutritional values. Biotechnologists have developed genetically modified rice and they are working on other kinds of nutritionally improved crops.Biotech can also improve farming productivity in places where food shortages are caused by crop damage attributable to drought, poor soil and crop viruses.1.The passage mainly talks about________.A. the world's food problemB. the development in biotechC. the genetically modified foodsD. the way to solve food shortages2.According to the passage, GM foods________.A. will replace naturally grown foodsB. are far better than naturally grown foodsC. may help to solve the problem of poor nutritionD. can cause serious trouble in developing countries3.The underlined sentence “The genetic genie is out of the bottle.” in Paragraph 2 probablymeans that________.A.GM foods are available everywhereB. the technology in producing GM foods is advancedC. genetic technology may have uncontrollable powersD. genetic technology has come out of laboratories into markets4.What's the writer's attitude towards GM foods?A. Enthusiastic.B. Cautious.C. Disapproving.D.

Sometimes, you just can't help it. Maybe you're watching a sad movie, or thinking about the friend who moved away. Next thing you know, there's a lump in your throat, your eyes are watering, and you have tears running down your cheeks.A professor of psychology at Tilburg University, in the Netherlands, has studiedcrying.According to Vingerhoets, there're three types of tears. Basal tears are the first type. They act as a protective barrier between the eye and the rest of the world.Next are reflex tears. They wash your eyes clean when something gets in them. Finally, there're emotional tears. “These are released in response to emotional states,” explains Vingerhoets.Scientists believe crying has something to do with how humans developed and learned to depend on each other. “Humans are very complex social creatures,” says Lauren Bylsma, a professor from Pittsburgh University, in Pennsylvania. “It seems that tears can make them get help and support from others.”She says another reason why we weep is that humans have the longest developmental period of almost any animal. It takes a long time to grow up.Vingerhoets agrees. “I think that the reason why humans shed(流出)emotional tears has to do with our prolonged(延长的) childhood,” he says. “That's the time when we're still dependent on adults for love, protection and care. The major advantage of tears is that you can target them at a specific person.”Vingerhoets says this ability could have come in handy in prehistoric times, when humans were living among dangerous animals. Loud crying could attract predators(捕食者). Tears were a safer way to get attention. “In this case, it's better to use a silent signal to ask for help,” he says. Vingerhoets and Bylsma do frequent studies to better understand why humans cry.1.The tears mentioned in Paragraph 1 should belong to ________.A.basal tearsB.reflex tearsC.happy tearsD.emotional tears2.What is Vingerhoets' attitude to the effects of tears?A.Passive.B.Positive.C.Doubtful.D.Indifferent.3.The underlined phrase of “a silent signal” probably refers to ________.A.a written languageB.predatorsC.tearsD.loud crying4.What is the best title of the text?A.Types of TearsB.Precious TearsC.Secrets of TearsD.On Tears参考答案:1.D; 2.B; 3.C; 4.C解析:1.[推理判断题。

The last time I was there he introduced me a story like this: There was a young man who was the son of a horse trainer, who would go from stable(马厩) to stable, race track to race track, farm to farm and ranch to ranch, training horses. So the boy’s school career was continually interrupted. When he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up.That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings, the stables and the track. He also drew a detailed floor plan for a 4,000-square-foot house that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch. He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, “See me after class.”The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked why he received an F. The teacher said, “This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you. You have no money. You have noresources. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. You have to buy the land. There’s no way you could ever do it... If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will reconsider your grade.”The boy went home and thought about it long and haul. He asked his father what he should do. His father said, “Look, son, you have to make up your own mind on this. However, I think it is a very important decision for you.” Finally, after a week, the boy turned in the same paper, making no changes at all. He stated, “You can keep the F and I’ll keep my dream.”Monty then turned to me and said, “I tell you this story because you are sitting in my 4, 000-square-foot house in the middle of my 200-acre horse ranch. I still have that school paper framed over the fireplace.” He added, “The best part of the story is that two years ago that same schoolteacher brought 30 kids to camp out on my ranch for a week. When the teacher was leaving, he said, “Look, Monty, when I was your teacher, I was something of a dream stealer. During those years I stole a lot of kids’ dreams. Fortunately, you had enough ambition not to give up on yours.”24. How did the father deal with his son’s problem?A. He did not pay attention to it.B. He punished his son for the large red F.C. He encouraged his son to make his own decision.D. He scolded his son for the ridiculous plan.25. What can we infer from the teacher’s remarks in the last paragraph?A. Skill comes by exercise.B. Everybody’s good at something.C. It’s great to have dreams.D. Where there is a will, there is a way.26. Why was Monty’s schooling continually interrupted?A. Because he didn’t like his teacher.B. Because he had to do much housework.C. Because he refused to go to school sometimes.D. Because his father always changed his working place.27. What’s the best title for the text?A. A boy having no changesB. A boy following his heartC. A boy holding on to his dreamD. A boy owning a horse ranchCDid you hear what happened at yesterday’s meeting? Can you believe it? If you find those sorts of quietly whispered questions about your co-workers irresistible, you’re hardly alone. But why are we drawn to gossip?A new study suggests it’s because the rumors are all about us. “Gossip receivers tend to use positive and negative group information to improve, promote, and protect the self,” writes a research team, led by Elena Martinescu of the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. In the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, the researchers described two experiments team, led by Elena Martinescu of the University described two experiments testing the personal value gossip receivers get.The first featured 178 university undergraduates, who had all previously worked on at least one course assignment with a group of four or more students. Participants were asked to recall and write a short description of an incident, in which a group member shared with them either positive or negative information about another group member’s secret. They then reported their level of agreement with a series of statements. Some of these measured the self-improvement value of the gossip (“The information received made me think I learn a lot from X”); others measured its self-promotion value (“The information I received made me feel that I am doing well compared to X”). Still others measured whether the gossip raised personal concerns (“The information I received made me feel that I must protect my image in the group”).In the second experiment, 122 undergraduates were assigned the role of “sales agent” at a major company. They received gossip from a colleague that a third person either did very well or very badly at a performance evaluation, and were then asked about the emotions that information caused. They also responded to the above-mentioned set of statements presented to the participants in the first experiment. In each experiment, participants found both negative and positive gossip to be of personal value with different reasons. “Positive gossip has self-improvement value,” they write. “Competence-related positive gossip about others contains lessons about how to improve one’s own competence. On the other hand, negative gossip has self-promotion value, because it provides individuals with social comparison information that justifies self-promoting judgments which results in feelings of pride.”In addition, the results showed that negative gossip brought about self-protection concerns, the researchers write. “Negative gossip makes people concerned that their reputations may be at risk, as they may personally become targets of negative gossip in the future, which generates fear.” Fear is hardly a pleasant sensation(感觉), but it can be a motivating one. As researchers put it: “Gossip conveniently provides individuals with indirect social-comparison information about relevant others.”28. Why are we drawn to gossip according to the researchers?A. We need evaluative information about others to evaluate ourselves.B. We are interested in the news that arouses our personal concerns.C. We tend to gain a sense of pride from judging others.D. We are likely to learn lessons from others’ mistakes.29. According to the first experiment, which of the following shows self-promotion value?A. I have to learn from Mary according to what Tom said about her.B. I should behave myself in case of being gossiped about like Mary.C. I’ve done better than Mary according to what Tom said about her.D. I have no comments on what Tom said about Mary.30. What’s the critical difference of the second experiment compared with the first one?A. The identities of the participants.B. The number of the participants studied.C. The time during which the experiment lasted.D. The role-play technique used in experiment.31. What role does “negative gossip” play according to the researchers?A. A fear killer.B. A protector.C. A motivator.D. A subject provider.DFacial recognition technology is already widely used by governments and some advertising companies. The technology uses machine learning tools to search for faces in an attempt to identify people. In a recent study scientists announced they had developed machine learning tools to track the faces of individual wild chimpanzees(黑猩猩). Dan Schofield said that the system was developed to improve the quality of information collected about chimpanzees in the wild over a long period of time.“For species like chimpanzees, which have complex social lives and live for many years, getting snapshots of their behavior from short-term field research can only tell us so much,” Schofield said. The researchers wanted to get a more complete understanding of the lives of the chimpanzees by studying them over several generations. But doing this would have required searching through hundreds of hours of video recordings of chimpanzees in the wild. The researchers recorded the activities of a group of chimpanzees that lived in the West African nation of Guinea. A facial recognition computer model was trained using more than 10 million images of the animals. The model was then used to search, recognize and track individual chimpanzees. The system was able to identify individual chimpanzees correctly about 92 percent of the time. It successfully identified the animals’ sex 96 percent of the time. The study included an experiment with humans to see how they could perform against the machine learning system in making identifications. The human persons were able to correctly identify individual chimpanzees about 42 percent of the time. The machine learning tool was much faster at completing the experiment. Human experts took about 55 minutes, while the computer took only seconds. The researchers say they are permitting other scientists to use the system for similar projects. They hope the method will be used with other species to record animal behavior and monitor different animal populations in the environment.32. What can we infer from Schofield’s words?A. Researching chimpanzees needs more information.B. Chimpanzees can live as long as humans.C. Chimpanzees like to get snapshots too.D. Short-term field research provides more information.33. What does the underlined word “this” refer to?A. Recording the chimpanzees in the wild.B. Studying chimpanzees over several years.C. Understanding the lives of the chimpanzees completely.D. Getting snapshots of chimpanzees’ behavior.34. What did the experiment with humans prove in the study?A. Humans make more accurate identifications.B. The machine learning system is more effective.C. Humans can’t identify the animals’ sex correctly.D. Machine learning tools take a little more time in identification.35. What is the best title for the text?A. Facial recognition for animals is becoming popularB. Facial recognition is helping animals live in the wildC. Facial recognition plays a role in raising animalsD. 选择性必修第三册Unit 4Adversity and Courage高考题型组合练Ⅰ.阅读理解AUntil now, scientists haven’t been able to study the new rock on the moon. The new samples from Chang’e 5 will change this. They’re from near Mons Rümker,a volcanic mountain where the rock is thought to be much younger—about 1 billion years old. There are a lot of reasons scientists are eager to study this younger rock, one of which is that it could help us more precisely date not only the moon, but many rocky planets and other objects. Here’s how that works: Scientists date lunar rock by using something called a chronology curve(年代学曲线),says Jolliff,a scientist at Washington University in St.Louis.Basically,they estimate the age of the rock by counting the number of craters in the area the rock es from; those increase as objects strike the rock over time.To make this estimation, scientists need to match the number of craters to a precise age.Right now, they only have data points for lunar rock that is 3 to 4 billion years old.Modern techniques can date the new sample extremely accurately, and once scientists know its precise age, they can add a valuable data point to their chronology curve. The dating system will also help us more accurately estimate the age of all sorts of objects in space, like rocky planets and other moons.Another reason scientists are keen to study this young volcanic rock is to find out more about how volcanism works on the moon.Jolliff says that it’s unclear why there was volcanic activity on the moon for such a long period of time. Most of the moon’s volcanic activity,he says,is thought to have occurred 3 or 4 billion years ago, when the moon was still pretty young. But since the moon does not have plate structure, which drives volcanism on Earth,it’s unclear what could have caused much later volcanic activity.“That’s something that you can find out of the samples by studying them in the lab,” Jolliff says.A.The fact of being unable to study the new rock.B.The new rock from near Mons Rümker.C.One of the reasons to study the moon’s new rock.D.The study of the moon’s younger rock.

Unit 4 Space Exploration一、阅读理解A[素材创新/]During space missions, astronauts can experience a loss of some of the inner structural support in their bones, reducing the density(密度) of them. For trips in space lasting at least 6 months, the bone loss is equal to about 20 years of aging. Fortunately, a new study finds a year back on earth rebuilds about half of strength lost in the affected bones."Our bones are always remodeling(重塑)," notes exercise scientist Leigh Gabel. "But they’ll lo se some of their strength when in space."Gabel was part of a team that tracked 17 astronauts. Each of these 14 men and 3 women had spent from 4 to 7 months in space. The team measured the 3-D structure of their bones. They focused on the structure of the tibia(胫骨) in the lower leg and the lower-arm bone. The researchers took images of the bones 4 times — before spaceflight, then when the astronauts returned from space, and again six months and one year later. From the pictures, they got to know an astronau t’s bone strength and density at each of those times.Astronauts in space for less than six months reco v ered their preflight bone strength after a year back on earth. But those who stayed in space longer suffered permanent bone loss in their tibias. That loss was equal to a decade of aging. The lower-arm bones showed almost no loss. That was likely because these aren’t weight-bearing bones on earth, Gabel explains. In fact, those arms can get a bigger workout in space than on earth as astronauts use them to mo v e around their craft by pushing off handles and doorways."Increasing weight-lifting exercises in space could help reduce bone loss in legs," says exercise scientist Ste v en Boyd."With longer spaceflight, we can expect bigger bone loss — and probably a bigger problem with reco v ery," says physiologist Laurence Vico. "Space agencies should also consider other bone heath measures to reduce bone loss and increase bone formation."

Unit 4 History and Traditions一、阅读理解AEach April Thais celebrate their "Thai New Year" with a great water fight on the streets. People throw water at e v eryone passing by and e v en block the road so they can enter buses and "paint the faces" of all the passengers. But there are a few people who don’t wish to participate in the fun. When I first experienced this celebration, I was one of them. The first time our bus was stopped, 4 people coming into the bus intended to painte v eryone’s face. I slowly shoo k my head to say "No, thank you", but a man came from behind me and quickly painted my face. Then the other three felt inspired and added a little more "paint" to my face. I didn’t acti v ely stop them for fear that if I did, they would become more aggressi v e and throw e v en more water at me and possibly my backpack, which would damage whate v er was inside.E v en though it happened only once, emotionally it was v ery frightening because I felt so powerless. The experience caused me to think a lot about respect and moral autonomy orindi v idual judgment v s "permission" from the authorities. On this day, people of Thailand, including the police, gi v e "permission" for these acti v ities. So what about respect for theindi v idual? If someone does not want to be painted, is it OK to do it anyhow because the majority is ha v ing a good time and sincerely belie v es it is harmless fun, or because the police allow it?In my opinion, if someone does not want to ha v e something done to them, then you’re supposed to respect their decision. You can’t rely on the authorities or some group to tell you if something is right or wrong or if you should or shouldn’t do something. I belie v e this is a much healthier way of li v ing with one another in this world.
