In the deep autumn of 2020, a remarkable journey began in the ancient city of Hangzhou, China. It was not just any ordinary journey; it was a leap into the unknown, a dialogue between the past and the future. The setting was the ancient West Lake, a serene and beautiful landscape that had witnessed centuries of history and change. On this fateful day, a group of high school students gathered at the lakeside, each carrying a notebook and a pen. They were not there to study or to enjoy the scenery; they were there to participate in an extraordinary task—to continue a story that had begun hundreds of years ago.The story, "A Journey to the West," was a classic of Chinese literature, a tale that had captured the imaginations of generations. But this was not just any continuation; it was a fusion of the old and the new, a blend of traditional storytelling and modern creativity. As the students sat down to write, they felt the weight of history upon them. They knew that their words would become a part of this ancient legend, a bridge between the past and the future. With pens flying across the pages, ideas and inspirations flowed freely. One student, a girl named Li Hua, chose to focus on the theme of environmental protection. She imagined a future where the West Lake was threatened by pollution and climate change. In her story, the heroes of the original tale, Sun Wukong and his companions, were called upon to save the lake from destruction. As Li Hua wrote, she felt a sense of urgency and responsibility. She knew that her story was not just a fiction; it was a warning about the real-world challenges we face today. She hoped that by writing about these issues, she could raise awareness and inspire others to action.Another student, Zhang Yang, took a different approach. He chose to explore the theme of technology and its impact on society. In his story, the heroes used advanced technology totravel through time and space, encountering different cultures and learning from their experiences.Zhang Yang was fascinated by the possibilities of technology and its role in shaping our future. He believed that by blending traditional storytelling with modern themes, he could create a bridge between the old and the new, a way to connect generations and share wisdom. As the students continued to write, they were joined by local residents and visitors who were curious about this unusual activity. They stopped to watch and even offered their own suggestions and insights. The atmosphere was lively and inspiring, a testament to the power of storytelling and its ability to bring people together. As the sun set over the West Lake, the students packed up their notebooks and pens. They knew that their work was done, but they also knew that their journey had just begun. They had taken part in something remarkable—a fusion of tradition and modernity, a bridge between the past and the future. As they walked away from the lakeside, they carried with them not just the memories of this special day but also a sense of purpose and hope. They knew that their stories could make a difference, could inspire others to action and create a better world. And so, the journey continued—a journey that would span generations and connect the past with the future, a journey that would be remembered and told for centuries to come.**跨越时空的对话:传统与未来的融合**2020年深秋,一场非凡的旅程在中国古城杭州悄然展开。

ATry one of these amazing destinations on your next vacation.MallorcaOn the popular Spanish island of Mallorca, farmhouse inns focus more on providing isolation and quietness than offering hands-on farming experiences. With millions of visitors staying on the beaches of Mallorca and the other Balearic Islands each summer, a little bit of isolation is a good thing for aloneness-seeking travelers. Mainly located in the hills of inland Mallorca, these inns range from rustic century-old farmhouses to luxury(奢侈的) villas with spas and swimming pools.HawaiiPeople who don't want to dig out their passport but still want their farm adventure can head to the island of Hawaii. The 50th state talks much about the well-developed farm tourism industry that can hold people with different interests. Agritourism choices range from visiting coffee plantations(种植园) in the Big Island's Kona region to exploring the plantations on Maui to staying on farms on the easily reachable island of Oahu. CaliforniaCalifornia is one ofthe best places in the U. S. to enjoy a farm-stay, thanks to the diversity of crops and farms. Small family farms and large farms offer a more hands-on approach to agritourism. Many of them teach small-scale farming techniques and even offer strategies for organic growing. The University of California system, one of the largest state-run higher education systems in the U.S., has a small-farm program that helps growers create agritourism businesses.Philippine IslandsWith diverse conditions on different islands, the Philippine Islands are ideal places for visiting multiple agritourism sites or focusing on one product. Tourists can visit a huge pineapple plantation for a taste of large-scale agriculture, or they could focus on smaller operations such as bee farms, and even small plantations that specialize in growing tropical produce such as dragon fruit.1. What kind of people will choose to go to Mallorca?A. Those who prefer peace of mind.B. Those who like lying on the beach.C. Those who enjoy the luxury of tourism.D. Those who want to experience farming.2. What can people do on the Philippine Islands?A. Live in farmhouses.B. Visit plantations.C. Learn farming techniques.D Take part in a farm program.3. What are the four places in the text famous for?A. Locations.B. Environments.C. Local products.D. Tourism features.BOne day when I was 5, my mother criticized me for not finishing my rice and I got angry. I wanted to play outside and not to be made to finish eating my old rice. In my angry motion to open the screen door (纱门) with my foot, I kicked back about a 12-inch part of the lower left hand corner of the new screen door. But I had no regret, for I was happy to be playing in the backyard with my toys.Today, I know if my child had done what I did, I would have criticized my child, and told him about how expensive this new screen door was, and I would have delivered a spanking (打屁股) for it. But my parents never said a word. They left the corner of the screen door pushed out, creating an opening, a crack in the defense against unwanted insects. For years, every time I saw that corner of the screen, it would remind me of my mistake from time to time. For years, I knew that everyone in my family would see that hole and remember who did it. For years, every time I saw a fly buzzing in the kitchen, I would wonder if it came in through the hole that I had created with my angry foot. I would wonder if my family members were thinking the same thing, silently blaming me every time a flying insectentered our home, making life more terrible for us all. My parents taught me a valuable lesson, one that a spanking or stern (严厉的) words perhaps could not deliver. Their silent punishment for what I had done delivered a hundred stern messages to me. Aboveall, it has helped me become a more patient person and not burst out so easily.4. When the author damaged the door, his parents _______.A. scolded him for what he had doneB. left the door unrepairedC. told him how expensive it wasD. gave him a spanking5. How did the author feel every time he saw the damaged door?A. He felt ashamed of his uncontrolled anger at that time.B. He found that his family members no longer liked him.C. He found it destroyed the happy atmosphere at his home.D. He felt he had to work hard to make up for (弥补) the damage.6. The experience may cause the author _______.A. to hide his anger away from othersB. not to go against his parents’ willC. to have a better control of himselfD. not to make mistakes in the future7. What of the following is the main idea of this passage?A. Adults should ignore their children’s bad behavior.B. Parents shouldn’t educate their children.C. What is the best way to become a more patient person?D. Silent punishment may have a better effect on educating people.CThese days, football is one of the most popular sports in the world. Given that Neil Armstrong wanted to take a football to the Moon, we could even say that it is also the most popular sport out of this world! The history of the game goes back over two thousand years to Ancient China. It was then known as cuju (kick ball), a game using a ball of animal skins with hair inside. Goals were hung in the air. Football as we know it today started inGreat Britain, where the game was given new rules. That football is such a simple game to play is perhaps the basis of its popularity. It is also a game that is very cheap to play. You don’t need expensive equipment; even the ball doesn’t have to cost much money. All over the world you can see kids playing to their hearts’ content with a ball made of plastic bags.Another factor behind football’s global popularity is the creativity and excitement on the field. It is fun enough to attract millions of people. You do not have to be a fan to recognize the skill of professional players or to feel the excitement of a game ending with a surprising twist. What’s more, football has become one of the best ways for people to communicate: it does not require words, but everyone understands it. It breaks down walls and brings people together on and off the field.“Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, ...” said Bill Shankly, the famous footballer and manager. “I can tell you with certainty it is much, much more important than that.” This might sound funny, but one only has to think about the Earth to realize that our planet is shaped like a football.8. What can we know from paragraph one?A. Some people like to play football on the Moon.B. The game called cuju was given new rules today.C. Cuju is different from football as we know it today.D. Many people like playing a ball made of plastic bags.9. According to the author, there are ________ reasons why football became so popular in the world.A. 3B. 4C. 5D. 610. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A. Football is round.B. Football is more than just a sport.C. Our planet is shaped like a football.D. What Bill Shankly said sounds funny.11. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the passage?A. To talk about the history of football.B. To express his/her love of football.C. To explain why football is such a popular game.D. To prove that he/she is a professional football fan.DWhen I was seven my father gave me a Timex, my first watch. I loved it, wore it for years, and haven’t had another one since it stopped ticking a decade ago. Why? Because I don’t need one. I have a mobile phone and I’m always near someone with an iPod or something like that. All these devices (装置) tell the time — which is why, if you look around, you’ll see lots of empty wrists; sales of watches to young adults have been going down since 2007. This is ridiculous. Expensive cars go faster than cheap cars. Expensive clothes hang better than cheap clothes. But these days all watches tell the time as well as all other watches. Expensive watches come with extra functions — but who needs them? How often do you dive to 300 metres into the sea or need to find your direction in the area around the South Pole? So why pay that much of five years’ school fees for watches that allow you to do these things? If justice were done, the Swiss watch industry should have closed down when the Japanese discovered how to make accurate watches for a five-pound note. Instead the Swiss reinvented the watch, with the aid of millions of pounds’ worth of advertising, as a message about the man wearing it. Rolexes are for those who spend their weekends climbing icy mountains; a Patek Philippe is for one from a rich or noble family; a Breitling suggests you like to pilot planesacross the world.Watches are now classified as “investments” (投资). A 1994 Philippe recently sold for nearly £ 350,000, while 1960s Rolexes have gone from £ 15,000 to £ 30,000 plus in a year. But a watch is not an investment. It’s a toy for self-satisfaction, a matter of fashion. Prices may keep going up — they’ve been rising for 15 years. But when of fashion. Prices may keep going up — they’ve been rising for 15 years. But when fashion moves on, the owner of that £ 350,000 beauty will suddenly find his pride and joy is no more a good investment than my childhood Times.12. The author don’t need another watch because ________.A. he don’t like wearing a watchB. he has mobile phone and can ask someone for helpC. he has no sense of timeD. he thinks watches too expensive13. It seems ridiculous to the writer that________.A. expensive watches with unnecessary functions still sellB. expensive clothes sell better than cheap onesC. cheap cars don’t run as fast as expensive onesD. people dive 300 metres into the sea14. What can be learnt about Swiss watch industry from the passage?A. It wastes a huge amount of money in advertising.B. It’s hard for the industry to beat its competitors.C. It targets rich people as its potential customers.D. It’s easy for theindustry to reinvent cheap watches.15. Which would be the best title for the passage?A. Timex or Rolex?B. My Childhood TimexC. Watches? Not for Me!D.

His farm was long, narrow, and quaint. It held two treasures. One was his beautiful fruit. There were many varieties of fruit: pears, apples, and lots more I just can't think of. The fruit naturally drew the children to his land. It made them into thieves. But my sister andI didn't dare to take his fruit because of the horrible rumors we had heard about Old Man Donovan. One summer day, we were playing in a nearby field. It wastime to head back home. He stood up, hugged his parents, and smiled, trying not to let his emotions (情绪)get the better of him.His parents were not quite able to keep theirs under control. They had driven their son several hours out of town to the university where he would soon be living and studying. It was time to say goodbye for now at least. The family hugged and smiled through misty eyes and then laughed. The boy lifted the last bag onto his shoulder, and flashed a bright smile. “I guess this is it,” he said. “I’ll see you back home in a month, okay” His parents nodded, and they watched as he walked out of sight into the crowds of hundreds of students and parents. The boy’s mother turned to the dog, “Okay, Poppy, time to go back home.”The house seemed quiet as a tomb without the boy living there.

Be a story; Beyond a story.

My Mom Only Had One Eye1 M y mom only had one eye. I hated her. She was such an embarrassment.2She ran a small shop at a flea market and collected old clothes and some other things to sell for the money we needed. Once during elementary school, it was field day, and my mom came. I was so embarrassed and wondered how could she do this to me? I threw her a hateful look and ran out. The ne xt day at school, my schoolmates asked me, “Your mom only has one eye?!” and taunted me.3 I was so angry with my mom and wished that she would just disappear from this world. So I said to my mom, “Why don’t you have the other eye?!If you’re only gonna ma ke me a laughingstock!” My mom did not respond, I guess I felt a little bad, but at the same time, I felt so good to have had said what I wanted to say. Maybe it was because my mom hadn’t punished me, I didn’t think that I had hurt her feelings very badly.4 For the words I had said to her earlier, there was something pinching at me in the corner of my heart. Even so, I hated my one-eyed mom and our desperate poverty. I told myself that I would become successful in the near future, so I studied very hard. Later I got accepted by the Seoul University, I left my mother and came to Seoul to study. Then I got married there.5 I bought a house of my own. Then I had kids, too. Now I am living happily as a successful man. I enjoy the life in Seoul because it’s a place that doesn’t remind me of my mom and my past. This kind of happiness was getting bigger and bigger, until one day someone knocked at my door. It was my mom! And still with her one eye! It felt as if the whole sky was falling apart on me. My little girl ran away, scared of my mom’s eye.6 I screamed at her, “Who are you? I don’t know you! How dare you come to my house and scare my daughter!” To this, my mom quietly answered, “Oh, I’m so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address,” and she disappeared out of sight.

The Voice of Rigobe quiet. His mother would tell him to use his quiet voiceask him to speak quietly in the car so that he could concentrate on his driving. His teacher would tell him to talk quietly so he would not bother everyone who was working. Not only did he have a loud voice, but Rigo liked to talk. He liked to talk a lot. Whenever he had time he would talk with his classmates, sharing everything he considered fan. He liked to yell and shout. Sometimes he just yelled, “Hey!” for no reason. He liked the sound of his very loud voice for he thought it had more penetrating (穿透的) power than that of an actor. But not everyone felt the same way. When Rigo shouted good-bye as he left for school, his mother shook her head. “Rigo! Be quiet!” When his father drove him to school, Rigo said, “Hey! There’s Chris!” He pointed at hisfriend, who was walking to school. His father shook his head. “Rigo, use a quiet voice in the car.” At school, his teacher talked to him three times about using his quiet voice. His classmates shook their heads, throwing an upset look at him when he talked aloud.Later, Rigo had to sit by himself for a while. His teacher wanted him topractice being quiet. Rigo had to sit quietly for five minutes. It felt like five hours or five days. When the five minutes were up, Rigo went to his desk and sat quietly. It was not easy. After school, Rigo was waiting for his father. He saw Chris again. “Hey!” he yelled. “Chris! Hey!”The headmaster was walking by. Rigo was sure he was going to get in trouble for his loud voice. He looked quickly at the ground. At least that's what we had heard. His small farm bordered our neighborhood where my younger sister, Leigh Ann, and I lived when we were growing up. It was time to head back home. My sister and I were feeling very daring that day. There was a short cut to our house that went through the Donovan farm. We thought he wouldn't be able to see us run across his property around the luscious fruit trees. We were almostthrough the farm when we heard, "Hey, girl!" in a gruff, low voice. We stopped dead in our tracks! There we were, face to face with Old Man Donovan. Our knees were shaking. We had visions of rocks pounding our bodies and bullets piercing our hearts."Come here," he said, reaching up to one of his apple trees. Still shaking, we went over to him. He held out several ripe, juicy, red apples. "Take these home," he commanded. We took the apples with surprised hearts and ran all the way home. Of course, Leigh Ann and I ate the apples. As time went on, we often went through Old Man Donovan's farm, and he kept on giving us more luscious fruit. One day, we stopped by to see him when he was on his front porch. We talked to him for hours. While he was talking, we realized that we had found the other hidden treasure: the sweet, kind heart hidden behind his gruff voice. Soon, he was one of our favorite people to talk to. Unfortunately, his family never seemed to enjoyour company. They never smiled or welcomed us in.

Do kids need rules, or is it more important for them to find out on their own what works and what doesn't work? It all depends on what the rules are supposed to accomplish. My feeling is that the most effective rules are the ones that will help students now and in the future. The school and parents should avoid rules that have no long-term value and make rules that help students focus on the future.__1__For example, unreasonable dress and grooming(修饰) codes are particularly annoying. What lasting benefit do they have? Boys have been sent home for wearing their hair too long. What is gained by regulating hairstyles? It seems to me that learning about appropriate grooming is something that students can safely learn on their own. It won't really ruin a person's life to look back at a yearbook picture in 10 years and laugh at the hairstyles. On the other hand, most students respect rules and requirements that help them stay focused on the future. It seems that every day the world gets more confused about what's important, so it's definitely useful to have a few guidelines for staying on track. Students may complain about having to take required courses(especially the ones they don't like), reading books during summer vacation, and doing community service, but at least they can see that there are clear reasons for these requirements. __2__My own lesson in rules happened when I was in eighth grade. Because I got all C's on my firstquarter report card, Dad said that I was limited to one hour of TV on school nights. Of course, I was upset and said my freedom was being taken away. Dad stood firm, and my grades improved dramatically. __3__ I probably wouldn't have come up with the TV rule on my own, and as a result, my life may have been much different.I realize that people who come up with rules mean well. They, too, are trying to remove distractions and smooth the way to success for students. __4__ Good intentions don't always make good rules.

A few years ago, the company I work for sent my wife and me to live in New York for a year. I've always loved jogging, so I was really happy when I found out the apartment they had rented for us was next to Central Park. This meant that every morning I could go for a run before I went to work.Because a lot of people had told me to be careful of muggers in the park, I didn't usually take anything with me. How could they rob me if I didn't have anything? But this one morning my wife asked me to buy some bread on the way home, so I put a$10 bill in my back pocket. It was a beautiful morning and the park was quiet with very few people walking or jogging around. While I was running, another jogger bumped into me. He apologized and continued running. For a while, I didn't think too much of it. However, when I noticed the wide path where I was running, I thought it was kind of strange. Thewarningof muggers in the park occurred to me."It could have been a mugger!”I suddenly became alarmed, so I checked my pocket. The money was missing! I immediately started to run after the otherjogger. I finally caught up and grabbed him firmly by the arm.I started shouting and demanding that he gave me the $10 bill. I'm not usually a hot-headed person, but I really lost my temper. I couldn't believe therobberywas actually happening to me. Filled with rage, I shook my fist at him. This seemed to frighten him. He quickly puthis hand in his pocket and gave me the money. Then he ran away as fast as he could.I bought the bread and went home. As soon as I got home, I couldn't wait to tell my wife the story."You won't believe what happened to me," I started with pride. She immediately interrupted. "I know, you left the money for the bread on the kitchen table."注意:1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;2. 应使用5 个以上短文中标有下划线的关键词语;3. 续写部分分为两段, 每段的开头语已为你写好;4. 续写完成后, 请用下划线标出你所使用的关键语。

During the late 1960s, Americans witnessed the uninvited side effects of high productivity. Factories and power plants were sending out smoke and industrial waste while Americans were using petrol for their massive(大量的) cars, making air pollution almostsynonymous withthe nation’s development. What moved Senator Nelson to action was the 1969 massive oil spill inCalifornia, the largest in theUnited Statesat that time. The spill proved to be an environmental nightmare as it had a significant effect on marine life, killing about 3,500 sea birds, as well as marine animals such as dolphins, elephant seals and sea lions, fueling public anger. Inspired by the student antiwar movement at that period of time, Nelson found it an appropriate time to direct the energy of the students towards a fight for environmental protection. He decided that it was time to educate the Americans on the need to protect the environment. Thus Earth Day was born in 1970, and public environmentalawareness took centre stage. On 22ndApril 1970, millions of Americans took to the street and thousands of students marched to appeal for a healthy, sustainable environment. There was now a new synergy(协同作用) among different groups which had previously been fighting their causes related to the environment. Their fight for environmental conservationbecame so overwhelming that affected businesses were forced to follow environmental standards if they wanted to continue their operations. As it became more apparent that environmental issues were not just localized ones but a global concern, the year 1990 saw Earth Day reach out to many more around the world. Earth Day 1990 helped pave the way for the 1992 United Nations Earth Summit inRio de Janeiro, bringing together many nations for a united effort towards protecting the environment.8. Earth Day united people to fight for environmental protection.C. It was the side effects of high productivity that led Nelson to take action.D. The 1992 United Nations Earth Summit made Earth Day known to more countries.11. The passage mainly talks about_______.A. how Earth Day came into beingB. why Earth Day was so significantC. who the founder of Earth Day wasD. what Earth Day meantto the worldDImust have always known reading was very important because the first memories I have as a child deal with books. There was not one night that I don’t remember mom reading me a storybook by my bedside. I was extremely inspired by the wonderful way the words sounded.I always wanted to know what my mom was reading. Hearing mom say, “I can’t believe what’s printed in the newspaper this morning,” made me want to grab it out of her hands and read it myself. I wanted to be like mymom and know all of the things she knew. So I carried around a book, and each night, just to be like her, I would pretend to be reading. This is how everyone learned to read. We would start off with sentences, then paragraphs, and then stories. It seemed an unending journey, but even as a six-year-old girl I realized that knowing how to read could open many doors. When mom said, “The C-A-N-D-Y is hidden on the top shelf,” I knew where the candy was. My progress in reading raised my curiosity, and I wanted to know everything. I often found myself telling my mom to drive more slowly, so that I could read all of the road signs we passed. Most of my reading through primary, middle and high school was factual reading. I read for knowledge, and to make A’s on my tests. Sometimes, I would read a novel that was assigned, but I didn’t enjoy this type of reading.I liked facts, things that are concrete. I thought anything abstract left too much room for argument. Now that I’m growing and the world I once knew as being so simple is becoming more complex, I find myself needing a way to escape. By opening a novel, I can leave behind my burdens and enter into a wonderful and mysterious world where I am now a new character. In these worlds I can become anyone. I don’t have to write down what happened or what technique the author was using when he or she wrote this. I just read to relax. We’re taught to read because it’s necessary for much of human understanding. Reading is an important part of my life. Reading satisfies my desire to keep learning. And I’ve found that the possibilities that lie within books are limitless.12. Why did the author want to grab the newspaper out of mom’s hands?A. She wanted mom to read the news to her.B. She couldn’t wait to tear the newspaper apart.C. She couldn’t help but stopmom from reading.D. She was eager to know what had happened.13. According to Paragraph 3, the author’s reading of road signs shows___________.A. her own way to find herselfB. her eagerness to develop her reading abilityC. her growing desire to know the world around herD. her effort to remind mom to obey traffic rules14. The author takes novel reading as a way to___________.A. explore a mysterious landB. develop an interest in learningC. get away from a confusing worldD. learn about the adult world15. What could be the best title for the passage?A The Pleasure of Reading B. Growing Up with ReadingC. The Magic of ReadingD.

2020届杭州市学军中学高三英语二模试卷及参考答案第一部分阅读(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项AObesity (肥胖症) is becoming a problem in our busy society, and almost one in three American adults is now considered to be obese. Children obesity is alsoat an all-time high.Obesity means being very overweight. If you are obese, you have too much bodyfat. If you eat more food than your body can use, this will make you put on weight. Food that your body does not need will be stored as fat by your body. The following are the major factors that increase the risk of obesity. What you eat plays a major role in weight gain. Eating a lot of fast food such as hamburgers, sweet drinks, ice creams and other sweet food can increase the risk of becoming obese. If you do not do enough exercise, you will put on weight as the food you eat is not being used to make energy for physical activities. The chances of you being obese are greater if your parents are obese. There are many psychological factors that cause people to eat too much. People who are worried, unhappy or bored will often eat to make themselves feel better. This is known as comfort eating.Age is another factor, as you tend (趋于) to be less active when you get older. When you get older, you need to eat less, and if you do not eat less, you will put on weight. Obesity can cause many health problems such as heart problems, high blood pressure and many other serious medical conditions.1. The underlined sentence in paragraph 1 means that ____.A. obesity does not do harm to health.B. there are more obese children than before.C. all the American children are obese.D. there are less obese children in the USA.2. According to the passage, there are ____ major factors that increase the risk of obesity.A. threeB. fourC. fiveD. six3. What will the writer most probably talk about after the last paragraph?A. How to avoid obesity.B. How to live in the busy USA.C. What illnesses are caused by obesity.D. How doctors treat heart problems.BFor as long as I can remember, my body and I have shared a relationship of discontent. Growing up, I was skinnier than the other kids and at five I was told I wasn't attractive and that I must put on some weight. But no matter how much I ate, I stayed thin for years until adolescence. Then I started putting on weight almost immediately. I remember feeling happy as I began to fill out. However, my joy didn't last long.I was thirteen when I was first called fat. Friends and neighbours would make jokes on my big size. As I entered my late teens, I had completely lost confidence in my body and, subsequently, in myself. Having failed to live up to conventional beauty standards, I was convinced that if I wanted to be loved, I needed to offer more, doing anything to please everyone around.I entered adulthood thinking I wasn't “enough”—an idea that was seeded not only by the fact that “skinny” is celebrated, but also by the language associated with accounts of losing weight—selfimprovement, discipline—all virtues. Being fat quickly categorizes you as lazy and undisciplined. Consumed by thoughts of the way my body looked, I didn't notice the other ways my body needed attention. I failed to realize, for example, that my period was much heavier and more painful than ever before. Actually I developed a rare disease and later I had two surgeries.I was always made to feel that my weight was the root of a lot of problems in my life; I have learnt this is not true. After a lot of selfreflection and some professional help, I realized I never learnt to like myself. While two decades of selfhatred cannot be undone overnight, I have taken first steps to acceptance.I am now much lighter than before, in body and mind. There are days I find voices on social media saying I am too fat to be loved or to be worthy, but I am learning not to focus on that thought for long. As long as I like myself, just the way I am, opinions at the end of the day are just water off a duck's back.4. What can we learn about the author from the first two paragraphs?A. She could change her weight at will.B. She had different beauty standards from others.C. She tried to love others to build her confidence.D. She was greatly influenced by others' opinions.5. Why did the author think she wasn't “enough”?A. She was poorly disciplined.B. She failed to celebrate “skinny”.C. She was labelled as lazy for her weight.D. She put on more weight after entering adulthood.6. What caused the author to make a change?A. Her lighter body.B. A troublesome illness.C. Popular beauty standards.D. Others' critical comments.7. What is the best title for the text?A. Beauty matters.B. Opinions vary.C. Worth your weight.D. Beyond your limits.CLearning to say “yes, and”When I first heard about the improvisation (即兴交流) class, I was hesitating. As a quiet and shy girl, I feared improvising in front of strangers. However,I knew I wanted to work as a science communicator after finishing my Ph.D., so it seemed like a perfect opportunity to learn how to speak and communicate with others effectively. I signed up, knowing the experience would give me help.During our first class, we learned an important concept of improvisation: “yes, and.” It means that, as improvisers, we’d better accept what fellow performers say. If someone says that rhinos (犀牛) are librarians, for example, then rhinos are librarians. We do not question the logic; we say “yes” and then continue with the scene as if nothing is wrong. The first few scenes were hard, but as weeks turned into months, I became more comfortable andeven started to enjoy our classes. I became better at listening, relating to my conversation partners, and communicating clearly in the moment. Once when I was giving a presentation about my science, an audience member surprised me with a question that didn’t grow out of the information I’d presented. Instead of getting confused and nervous, I took the “yes, and” approach—accepting the question and letting my mind focus on why it was asked. That helped me find an appropriate answer. I got pretty excited about it.The benefits of improvisation go beyond communication. Before attending the class, I would get stuck when my experiments produced unexpected data, thinking that I had made a mistake. But now, instead of getting discouraged, I will stay open to the possibility that the results are real, keep exploring the data and end up identifying a new type of cell—one that isn’t behaving as expected.I think all scientists can benefit from this lesson. If the data say rhinos are librarians, then it’s worth findingout whether rhinos are, in fact, librarians. As scientists, our job isn’t to challenge data that support a preconceived (先入为主的) story, but to say “yes, and.”8. Why did the author attend the improvisation class?A. To get a different experience.B. To finish her Ph.D. at university.C. To give up her job as a science communicator.D. To improve her speaking and communicating ability.9. What was the author’s change after attending the improvisation class?A. She formed her own idea quickly.B. She came up with lots of creative responses.C. She paid more attention to the logic of answers.D. She became a good listener before giving an opinion.10. The author mentions applying the “yes, and” approach to her scientific experiments to ______.A. explain the process of using the methodB. prove the benefits of the improvisation classC. share her own research experiences with readersD. attract fellow scientists to attend the improvisation class11. What can be inferred about scientists from the last paragraph?A. They should attend the improvisation class.B. They should question all preconceived ideas.C. They should carry on research by admitting earlier data.D. They should try to improve their professional knowledge.DHave you ever done something that was really dangerous just because you thought it was safe?Maybe you did a dangerous trick on your bicycle or skateboard because you were wearing a helmet and thought you couldn’t get hurt. The psychology(心理) of this sort of behavior is called the Peltzman Effect, named after Sam Peltzman, professor of economics at the University of Chicago. Peltzman believes that those moments when people think they are the safest are the times when they act most dangerously.Peltzman said that people drove more dangerously when they wore seat belts(安全带) . Driving a largefour-wheel drive vehicle has a similar effect on drivers’ behavior. Because drivers of large vehicles sit up higher and can see better, they feel they can make better judgments when they drive. They are better protected in accidents,so they act more dangerously. This makes driving morehazardousto other drivers. The Peltzman Effect isn’t just limited to driving. In 1972, the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) passed a law requiring child safety caps on most medicine bottles. The safety caps were designed to prevent children from accidentally taking the medicine, especially painkillers such as aspirin. Requiring safety caps sounded like a great idea, but there was an unexpected side effect. Because the safety caps are so hardto take off, some people leave them off altogether.Worse, some parents leave the bottles where kids can reach them because they feel that it is safe because of the cap. 2020年5月浙江省杭州高级中学高三第二次模拟考试英语作文读后续写写作指导一、续写原题rocks at them and even shot at them with a shotgun. At least that's what we had heard. His small farm bordered our neighborhood where my younger sister, Leigh Ann, and I lived when we were growing up.

Paragraph 1: Every summer, we would visit Mr. Donovan and talk to him.Paragraph 2:The next winter, word got around that Old Man Donovan had died.

第三原文中提到老人的家人对他们不友好,在续写部分应该有相关的交代(his family never seemed to enjoy our company. They never smiled or welcomed us in)。
