Reading across cultures

Unit One

Smiles and Laughter for Asians An Asian uses the smile and laughter to exude happiness, joy, content, but on the flip side that same smile or laugh can be used to mask shame, embarrassment, loss of face, sadness or hurt feelings. Hence, a smile or laugh, which appears to be out of context, can confuse, upset or even irritate an unwary Westerner. In Asia, laughter serves many functions. People smile or laugh in response to funny and happy things, or when they are pleased. A smile and a laugh need not always be an expression of joy and amusement.
