If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they become weak; when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows this, and nobody would think of questioning this fact. Yet there are many people who do not seem to know that the memory works in the same way. When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by exercising it regularly, either consciously or unconsciously. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough opportunity to become strong. The position is exactly the same as that of two persons, one of whom exercises his arms and legs by playing tennis, while the other sits in a chair or a motorcar all day.

Our lives would be the same.We would have to use bikes, horses, or our feet to get to places. And wecouldn''t go as far as we are used to going. But we do have cars. With cars, people can come and go as they please. They can work far from home. Many people live in the country. But they work in the city. Most of them get there in cars. This means that there are a lot of cars on the road. Are there too many cars on the road? Some people think so. So they are asking that we take trains and buses. But not everyone can do this. Some people must take their cars. This is because no trains or buses go where they have to go. Maybe other people could go to work with them. Then there wouldn''t be so many cars on the road. What will our lives be like in times to come? Maybe we won''t need cars so much. Maybe more of us will work at home. Maybe trains and buses will go to more places. Then more people will be in them. This will mean more room on our streets and roads. It would be nice if people walk more. They might like to step along a street or road. They would not get far very fast. But they would have the time to look around them. Who knows? They might even feel better, too!1、What's not the possible reason why there are a lot of cars on the road?A、Because everyone likes to drive his own car to do whatever he likes. ?B、Because the number of trains and buses is small.C、Because many people who live in the country go to work in cars in the city.D、Because it is more convenient for people to go to places in cars than other means.2、According to the author, which of the following is not the reason why thenumber of cars willbe reduced in the future?A、More people will work at home.B、Trains and buses will go to more places.C、More people will take buses and trains.D、People won't need so many cars.3、It can be inferred from the passage that __.A、the author thinks that people who are in the city should not live in the countryB、the author thinks that there should be more trains and buses which should go to more placesC、the author wishes that the number of cars would be reduced so that there will be more room on the streets and roadsD、the authors believe that more walk does good to health4、What does the underlined word "please" here mean?A、to goB、to meanD、to love5、What's the writer's opinion in this passage?A、We should use more carsB、We should use fewer cars.C、We should not use carsD、We should take good care of cars.2、Your mobile phone( ⼿机) rings, and instead of the usual electronic signals, it's playing your favorite music. A friend sends you favorite song to cheer you up. One day, a record company might forward new records and music videos to your phone. The mobile business is getting into the music business. For the moment, the interest is in pleasant ring tones, but some companies are hoping to take full advantage of the next generation of mobile phone --- all-purpose gadgets ( ⼩玩意⼉) that blend phone, personal stereo, video player and Internet browser into one. Finally, record companies might send new records and videos to fans who register their numbers. The fans could pass music or songs along to friends--- a kind of musical trading card. Unlike Internet tracks, mobile downloads would be easy for recordcompanies to control, said former record industry official Ralph Simon, who is now chairman of Yourmobile, based in Santa Monica, California."If you pass a song along to other phones through a network, each phone can be charged,"said Simon."It's like going through a toll gate ( 收费站). There's more possibility for copyright control than there is on the Internet."Massachusetts-based Converse is offering a service in Portugal and theNetherlands that lets people record tunes on their voice mail or send music as presents to friends. For each question there are 4 choices marked A),B), C), and D). Choose the ONE answer that best completes each sentence.Passage 11 Thousands of years ago, in the middle of an ocean, miles from the nearest island, an undersea volcano (火山) broke out. The hot liquid rock piled higher and higher and spread wider and wider. In this way, an island rose up in the sea.2 As time went on, hot sun and cool rains made the rock split and break into pieces. Sea waves dashed against the rock. In this way, soil and sand came into being.3 Nothing lived on the naked soil. And then the wind and birds brought plant seeds, spiders and other little creatures there. Only plants could grow at first. Only they, in sunlight, could produce food from the minerals of the soil, water and air. While many animals landed on the island, they could find no food. A spider spun its web in vain, because there were no insects for its web to catch. Insec ts couldn’t stay until there were plants for them to eat. So plants had to be the pioneer life on this new island.1. The main point of the passage is ____A____.A) how an island formedB) how an volcano broke outC) how plants were brought to the islandD) how plants and animals began to live on an island in the sea2. Children kick a football around for fun. When they get older and play for local school teams, they become competitive but they still enjoy playing. The individual representing his country cannot afford to think about enjoying himself. He has to think only about winning. He is responsible for the entire nation's hopes, dreams and reputation.2 A good example is the football Word Cup. Football is the world’s most important sport. Winning the World Cup is perhaps the summit of international sporting success. Mention Argentina (阿根廷) to someone and the chances are that he’ll think of football. In a sense, winning the World Cup put Argentina on the map.3 Sports fans and supporters get quite unreasonable about the World Cup. People in England felt that their country was somehow important after they won in 1966. Last year thousands of Scots sold their cars, and even their houses, and spent all their money traveling to Argentina, where the finals were played.4 So, am I arguing that international competition kills the idea of sport? Certainly not! Do the Argentineans really believe that because eleven of their men proved the most skillful at football, their nation is in every way better than all others? Not really. But it's nice to know that you won and that in one way at least your country is the best.6. The main idea of the passage is _____C___.A) to tell us that football is the most important sport in the worldB) to compare Argentina with EnglandC) to explain the role of sportD) to tell us the fact only children can enjoy themselves in sports games7. The athlete representing his country only thinks about winning because _____D___.A) the games are too competitive B) he wants to make a lot of moneyC) he wants to enjoy himselfD) he fights for the nation’s hopes, dreams and reputation8. The underlined word “summit” in Paragraph 2 means ____A____.A) highest point B) mountain top C) example D) perfection9. Thousands of Scots sold their cars and houses, and went to Argentina, because _____B___.A) they wanted to have a tripB) they wanted to see the finals of the World CupC) they wanted to live thereD) they loved Argentina very much10. Which of the following statements is true?(A)A) The Argentinean football team proved the best one.B) International competition kills the idea of sport.C) Sports fans and supporters are crazy about the World Cup.D) The essence of sport is winning.Passage 31 The pine (松) tree is a special kind of tree. Some people call the pine tree a Christmas tree. This is because many people put pine trees in their homes at Christmas time.2 Pine trees are different from other trees because most other trees lose their leaves in the winter. Pine trees stay green all year long, even in the winter. Pine trees are also called evergreens because they are always green. Pine trees do not have soft leaves like other trees. They have hard, thin leaves. Pine trees also have pine cones. If you walk in a forest, you will see many pine cones on the ground. Inside the pine cones are seeds. When the seeds fall to the ground, a new tree starts to grow.3 Pine trees are useful for many reasons. The wood is used to make many things, such as tables, beds and boats. Many kinds of birds build their homes in pine trees. The seeds of pine trees are food for some small and big animals.4 If you walk in a forest of pine trees, the air has a wonderful smell. In winter, the white snow on the dark green trees looks very beautiful.11. Cultural differences sometimes cause problems in carrying out business transactions. This article gives suggestions to Western businessmen and salesmen who do business in the Arab world. It is intended to help them understand polite customs and practices in the Middle East.)2 Arabs consider it extremely bad manners to start talking business immediately. Even the busiest government official or executive always takes extra time to be polite and offer refreshments. No matter how busy you are, you should make time for this hospitality.3 The “conference visit” is a way of doing business throughout the Arab world. Frequent ly, you will have to discuss your business in the presence of strangers, who may or may not have anything to do with your business. Do not be surprised if your meeting is interrupted several times by people who come into the room unannounced, whisper, or speak softly to the person with whom you are talking, and leave. Act as though you do not hear, and never show displeasure at being interrupted.4 “Making decisions quickly is not an Arab custom. (2 points each , 30 points in all )Passage 1I'm beginning to wonder whether my grandmother isn't right when she complains, as she frequently does, that children nowadays aren't as well-mannered as they used to be. Whenever she gets the opportunity, she describes in detail how she used to be told to respect her elders and betters. She was taught to speak only when she was spoken to, and when she went out on her own, she was reminded to say "please" and "thank you". Children in her day, she continues, were expected to be seen and not heard, but these days you are lucky if you ever hear parents telling their children to mind their p's and q's.If you give her the chance she then takes out of her desk the old photograph album which she keeps there, and which she never tires of displaying. Of course when you look at pictures of her parents you feel sure that, with a father as hard-looking as that, you, too, would have been "seen and not heard". Beside him sits his wife, with their children around her: Granny and her elder brothers. It always occurs to me that perhaps those long, stiff, black clothes were very heavy to a little girl, that she hadn't enough breath left to talk, let alone bad. It must have been a dull and lonely life too, for she stayed mainly at home during her childhood, while her brothers were sent away to school from an early age. That said, my childhood was much freer than Granny's. I went to school with my brother, and I played football with him and his friends. We all spoke a common languageand we got up to the same trouble. I would have died if I had had to stay indoors, wear a tight frock (女式礼服), and sew.36. How can we understand "children in her day were expected to be seen and not heard"? A. Children were not supposed to be heard by others.B. Children were not supposed to hear their parents' conversation.C. Children were not supposed to speak in the face of others.D. Children were not supposed to speak until asked to do it.37. What is the expression of "mind their p's and q's" supposed to mean? A. To mind their own business. B. To remember to say "please". C. To remember to say "thank you". D. To be well-mannered.38. Which of the following words can be used to describe Granny's feelings of her own childhood? A. Lonely. B. Dull. C. Proud. D. Happy.39. How did the author feel about her Granny's childhood? A. Disappointed. B. Unbearable. C. Respectable. D. Indifferent.40. Why did Granny often complain about modern children's behavior? A. She missed those good old days. B. She was too harsh on children. C. She didn't like kids who talk a lot. D. She was not open to new things. Passage 2Time spent in a bookshop can be most pleasant, whether you are a book-lover or merely there to buy a book as a present. You may even have entered the shop just to find shelter from a sudden shower. Whatever the reason, you can soon become totally unaware of your surroundings. You soon focus on some book or other, and usually it is only much later that you realize you have spent too much time there and must hurry off to keep some forgotten appointment. This opportunity to escape the realities of everyday life is the main attraction of a bookshop. A music shop is very much like a bookshop. You can range round such places to your heart's content. If it is a good shop, no assistant will approach you with the greeting, "Can I help you?" You needn't buy anything you don't want. In a bookshop an assistant should remain in the background until you have finished reading. Then, and only then, are his services necessary.Once a medical student had to read a textbook which was far too expensive for him to buy. He couldn't obtain it from the library and the only copy he could find was in a bookshop. Every afternoon, therefore, he would go to the shop and read a little of the book at a time. One day, however, he was disappointed to find the book missing from its usual place. He was about to leave, when he noticed the owner of the shop making a gesture to him with his hand. Expecting to be scolded, he went towards him. To his surprise, the owner pointed to the book which was put away in a corner. "I put it there in case anyone had a desire to buy it!" he said, and left the delighted student to continue his reading. 41. Time spent in a bookshop can be most pleasant _______________. Our 100,000 students are currently studying at the Open University. We found limited development of distance learning in the case studies, with the exceptionof some postgraduate and professional courses. Even here, however, there seemed to be limits on further growth because of the high costs involved in setting up new distance learning courses, as well as uncertainties of demand (particularly in terms of the perceived financial returns on study). One of the case study universities provided video facilities and visiting staff to a rural area for a group of undergraduate students about 50 miles away. This was a new development which was working well and likely to be expanded to involve other universities. The main reason for general lack of development of distance learning, especially at the undergraduate level, may be that other universities have been unable to afford the considerable set-up costs and student support facilities. As costs of technology come downthis might change. The Open Learning Foundation is developing connections between universities to set open learning approaches within existing programs of study and thus encourage their greater use. This is seen as likely to develop further in the future. 46. The Open University provides an education for _________________. A. students who do not like attending regular universitiesB. students who failed the College Entrance ExaminationC. students who are adults and away from a universityD. students who are limited in their ability to learn47. Among other things, the further growth of distance learning at postgraduate and professional levels is limited by ____________________. A. the high costs involved B. a low student demand C. a lack of educationD. the poor rural technology48. The attempt of one case study university to provide equipment and staff to a rural group of students _________. A. would be expanded B. did not work well C. might help learning D. could cost a lot49. The cost of setting up a distance learning program might change ______________. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre.Passage OneQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage. As a place of learn ing, Oxford’s beginnings are equally distant. Legend has it that Alfred laid its foundations at the end of the ninth century. Certainly by the 12th century scholars were teaching in the town, Latin being the lingua franca (通用语). Before long their fame spre ad to the Continent, particularly to the Sorbonne College in Paris, then Europe’s greatest centre of learning. A group of English scholars left the French capital in 1167 to settle in Oxford and the place became an attraction for students and teachers from all over Britain. Forty-seven years later the university received its first charter (许可证) granted by the Pope regulating its administration. Today Oxford is a large, crowded city, but the ancient university buildings in the centre --- colleges, libraries, museums and administrative blocks connected by narrow lanes --- have remained largely untouched. While most old universities have modernized radically to accommodate their growing populations, Oxford has managed to expand while still preserving its traditional academic structure. The 36 existing colleges, varying from the older houses such as Merton, founded in the 13th century, to the newest, Green, founded in 1979, are independent, self-governing institutions operating under the umbrella of the University of Oxford. Still more foundations are prepared to become full colleges.26. By the 12th century, ____.A) Oxford had become the center of learning in EuropeB) scholars were teaching Latin in OxfordC) French was the prevailing language in OxfordD) many British teachers and students went to Oxford27. Which description about today’s Oxford is correct?A) Latin is the lingua franca.B) Many new buildings are under construction.C) The number of colleges is on the rise.D) All the colleges in Oxford were established in 12th century.Passage TwoQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.Sometimes we like things loose, unstructured, in blue jeans. Sometimes we like things precise, brilliant, and charming. This is the heart of ballet. By all logical assumptions, it should never have survived the French Revolution. An art form developed out of the formality of court life, it boasts an almost mathematical vocabulary of steps and gestures. Ballet in the past few hundred years has both evolved and remained still. Any city worth its charter supports a ballet company and at least one annualproduction of “The Nutcracker.” Productions of nineteenth-century classics have been a staple (主要内容) of “high” culture to a s mall but devoted audience. But the art form has witnessed some radical experimentation, as well. One of the half-dozen geniuses of the twentieth century, George Balanchine, blew the dust off traditional ballet. He made generous use of composers such as Bruckner, and Stravinsky. Ballet, Balanchine realized, like all great ballet enthusiasts, that the true soul of ballet is music. What gives the dancing its most heartfelt pleasures are the dancers, their athleticism evidence of what perfection the human body is capable of, their grace of an elegant, physical representation of the music itself. The intellectual thrill of ballet lies in watching the playing out of patterns, the arresting power of a solo, the corps of 50 dancers moving on tiptoes in extreme unity. When all the elements work together, we leave the theater with our postures considerably improved.31. According to the passage, ballet was developed ____.A) in the imperial court C) during the French RevolutionB) for the masses D) after the French Revolution32. A soft-spoken fellow from Kansas -a guy who was turned down by the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) because his maths scores were too low and who never had much formal physics training -received the Nobel Prize in physics. This is slightly ironical, because Jack St Clair Kilby is not a physicist. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences was willing to overlook that minor detail, though, because Kilby did, after all, come up with the most valuable invention of the past half-century: the microchip. Jack Kilby’s idea sparked the information age. The tiny silicon chip at the heart of all digital devices has arguably become the most important industrial commodity since crude oil. Without the chip, there could be no personal computers or mobile phones, no Internet or Play-Stations. The semiconductor integrated circuit has changed the world as fundamentally as did the light bulb, the telephone and the horseless carriage. But somehow the man who made the microchip has never achieved the recognition that Edison, Bell and Ford enjoyed. Thanks to the Nobel Prize, at age 78, Jack Kilby finally received the attention he deserved.36. Kilby is a(n) ____.A) American B) Frenchman C) Swedish D) Englishman37. In our society, parents often expect their children to do better than they did, to find better jobs, to make more money and to do all the things that they were unable to do. Often, that is another cause of the gap between them. Often, they discover that they have very little in common with each other.
The gas shortage has caused a big problem for Americans. But the answer will not be a bigger system of public transportation. The real solution will have to be a new kind of car, one that does not use so muchgas.
The third reason is the most important one, though. The American spirit of independence is what really made cars popular. Americans don’t like to wait for a bus or a train or even a plane. They don’t like to have to follow an exact schedule. A car gives them the freedom to schedule their own time. And this is the freedom that Americans want most to have.

Cars are important in the United States. Without a car most people feel that they are poor. And even if a person is poor he doesn’t feel really poor when he has a car. Henry Ford was the man who first started making cars in large numbers. He probably didn’t know how much the car was going to affect American culture. The car made the United States a nation on wheels. And it helped make the United States what it is today.
One important cause of the generation gap is the opportunity that young people have to choose their own ways of life. In a more traditional society, when children grow up, they are expected to livein the same area as their parents, to marry people that their parents know and like, and often to continue the family jobs. In our society, young people often travel great distances for their education, move out of the family at an early age, marry or live with people whom their parents have never met, and choose jobs different from those of their parents.
The second reason cars are popular is the fact that the United States never really developed an efficient and inexpensive form of public transportation. Long-distance trains have never been as common in the United States as they are in other parts of the world. Nowadays there is a good system of air-service provided by planes. But it is too expensive to be used frequently.

There is no separation for you between work and home.
Even when at home, your work is the top priority.
You are totally committed and driven to work, and your happiness is found in your work.
Finally, the speed at which changes take place in our society is the third cause of the gap between the generations. In a traditional culture, senior people are valued for their knowledge, but in our society the knowledge of a lifetime may become out of date. The young and the old seem to live in two very different worlds, separated by different skills and abilities. No doubt, the generation gap will continue in American life for some time to come.
( 2 )
A few years ago it was common to speak of a generation gap between young people and their elders. Parents said that children did not respect and listen to them, while children said that their parents did not understand them at all. What had gone wrong? Why had the generation gap suddenly appeared? Actually, the generation gap has been around for a long time. Many people argue that it is built into every part of our society.
2. What is the most important reason that cars become popular in the United States?
A.Because Americans like to be independent.
B. Because public transportation is not so good.
The gas shortage has caused a big problem for Americans. But the answer will not be a bigger system of public transportation. The real solution will have to be a new kind of car, one that does not use so much gas.
1. When do most Americans feel they are poor?
A. When they don’t have a car.
B. When they live in a huge country.
C. When they don’t use planes.
D. When they have a car.
There are three main reasons the car became so popular in the United States. First of all, the country is a huge one and Americans like to move around in it. The car provides the most comfortable and cheapest form of transportation. With a car people can go any place without spending a lot of money.
