51. Siena is an old city in the north of Italy. It began with agroup of people living on its hills over 2,900 years ago.Around the year 1100, Siena became an important businesscenter in Italy. In 1472, the first bank of the world was built inthis city and has been doing business ever since.Today Siena is famous for keeping its"old face". For example, its city walls, which helped keep the city safe in the past, are hundreds of years old now and look almost the same as before. Also, many old buildings are seen at the Piazza del Campo, the most important meeting place of the city. Few things have really changed in this center of public life for hundreds of years. Now people still go to the open space for sharing news, shopping, or playing sports. There is one more thing that helps keep Siena's old face: cars cannot enter the city most of the time.True, Siena is old, but it's beautifully old. People are welcome to visit this beautiful city and walk into the past.B、C两篇,根据短文内容,从每小题A、B、C三个选项中选出一个最佳答案.本语篇是一个寓言故事,属于《课程标准》第24个话题“故事与诗歌”。

I felt very lonely. As my parents worked so much,I had to clean the house and do all the shopping by myself. I was only a little happier at school when I was with my classmates and friends,I felt bored all the time and I felt sorry for myself. One day,on my way home from school, I saw a person living in the park. He was wearing dirty and worn-out clothes, and was holding a box in his hands, perhaps to sleep in at night. He gave me a big smile when he saw me. He looked as if he was the happiest man in the world. Looking at him, I realized how lucky I really was. I had a roof over my head. I had a comfortable bed. I had enough food to eat and enough clothes to wear. I had good friends at school and above all I had hard-working parents who really loved me and cared about me. I felt bad for feeling so sorry for myself. I realized how grateful I was to my parents for all that I had.(2)Sally moved from New York to London. She has made some new friends there. It is great because it is run by the students for the school. I am lucky as I am one of the hosts. It was started two years ago as CD players were not allowed in school . One day , I just began thinking about music for everyone, so I asked the headmaster if music could be played during break time. He approved the idea, and two years later I am the oldest student member of the radio club. Our club is much more than just music. Every morning we tell students about the weather and recent news, plus some special messages that the teachers want us to broadcast.During exam time we have a special programme that tells students the things they should or shouldn’t do for preparation. At the end of the school year, many students who are graduating use our club to give message to their close friends and teachers. When parents come to visit the school and talk to the teachers in the evening, we always play songs sung by students, and we also give special messages to inform the parents of events such as outings and school plays.I’m graduating soon. I shall miss the radio club, but I know that it will continue without me. (Kate Jones)(2)Our school club ‘Poets of the Nest Generation’was started by our English teacher Mr.Owen. We meet on the last Friday of every month to talk about poems and poets that we like. When we meet, we first select poems that we love. And then read them out loud. We do this in a group and listen to each other talking about poems in our group meetings. When I attended the first meeting, I was required to write a poem and I had to read it out to the group. It was a little scary at first, but everyone was so nice and friendly that I soon stopped worrying. I once read a poem about nature in our school garden. I chose an old tree and circled everyone around it before I read. The group said it was one of the best poem they had heard.(Bob Shaw)Topic 3---healthA Linda is writing in her diary about a debate over medicine and exercise. Help her underline all the linking verbs.12MarchToday I feel worn out. This morning, I took park in a debate about medicine and exercise. Medicine plays an important role in our lives, but there are still some people who do not like it. They say that most drugs have side effects, and that not all diseases can be cured by medicine. Taking exercise, on the other hand, is always safe. The boy I debated against was very skillful. He made some quite reasonable points and gave a superb speech. I talked to him after the debate. He seemed tired too. In fact, he doesn’t really think medicine is bad, but he believes we should be aware of the problems it can cause.I told him that if we are cautions about using medicine,we can benefit from it.We were both happy with the outcome of the debate.People stayed silent and listened to us, and applauded at the end. Mum predicts that I will become quite a good public speaker if I continue to take part in debates. I am eager to debate again because today proved very successful!Topic 4---food and drinkA You want to write a letter to your local supermarket to ask them whether they plan to sell food from cloned animals. Below are two articles about the subject. Underline all the advantages and disadvantages so you can tell the supermarket about them. The taste of things to comeCloning animals for food production is necessary because we need to raise both the quality and quantity of our food supply to solve the problem of world hunger. Some animals produce more and better meat than n than the meat of ordinary animals. Through cloning, we can thus make sure that we will hother animals. Cloning allows us to keep alive the good qualities of these animals. Since only the best animals are cloned, cloned animals produce tastier meat that offers better nutritioave a reliable supply of high-quality food for years to come.It can only bring troubleThe cloning of animals for food must be stopped. Many people assume that a clone is an exact copy of another animals. This simply is not accurate--there are differences. For example, cloned animals are not very healthy--they nearly always live brief, painful lives compared with ordinary animals. Milk from a cloned cow is notthe same as the milk from the actual cow the clone was made from. No one can yet explain these differences. Therefore, we cannot confirm that food from cloned animals is really safe for humans to eat.Topic 5---entertainmentA Sophie and Alan both love watching films. They also love to argue about films. They are talking about the famous film, E.T.Sophie: E.T is one of the biggest money-making films in history. I think it’s a great films.Alan: I don’t think so. But the story is good in some ways. The idea of a friendly alien living in our world and making friends with a group of children isOK.Sophie: So, what’t the problem? The film is more than twenty years old now and people still love the story.Alan: I just think it is a good film but not a great one. I think that Steven Spielberg made the film because he wanted to make everyonecry!Sophie: That’s OK. Sometime people need to be moved by art. Have you ever read any books by Charles Dickens? His books are full of poor homelesschildren. He wrote about these children to make people pity them and tomake his readers feel moved.Alan: I don’t like to feel that my emotions are being played with. I also think the film is far too long.Sophie:It’s only one hour and forty-five minutes long!Alan:I mean that it feels too long. It’s quite exciting at the beginning but at the end of the film I think Steven Spielberg tries too hard to make us love E.T.and the children. There’s too much emotion.Sophie:I don’t understand you sometimes. There’s a really exciting park when the kids are on bikes and they fly through the sky to get away from thepoliceman who are searching for E.T. The special effects are amazing. Youhave to remember this film was made in the 1980s.Alan:Perhaps you’re right. I guess I’m just not excited by alien films. Sophie:But E.T. isn’t really an alien film. The whole idea is that E.T.is like us.He needs friendship, love and help. Can you remember the part where E.T.is dying and one of the children is so attached to E.T that he becomesseriously ill too?Alan:Yes, I think I fell asleep at that point. Sophie:That’s not funny!Topic 6---sportsSkill building 3: identifying/selecting relevant informationYou have to write a report on the history of table tennis around the world. Please send my best wishes to Granny and tell her that I am coming back soon.Love,RobertTopic 9---transportWritingWhen we express our opinions, it is important to be organized. We usually give a central idea or argument at the beginning. This argument should be general and clear. After stating the central idea, we give specific reason to support it . Finally, we provide a conclusion. Read the following article and see how the writer expresses his opinions about the responsibilities of drivers and pedestrians in traffic accidents. Some people in China think that if the driver of a vehicle runs into a pedestrian who has violated traffic rules, the pedestrian is at fault. However, I believe that the driver should be held at fault.First, it is unfair for a pedestrian to be badly injured or even killed just because he or she has violated a traffic rule. Both drivers and pedestrians may make mistakes or violate the traffic rules, whether that is their intention or not. However, if there is a traffic accident between a driver and a pedestrian, usually only the pedestrian suffers harm.Second, pedestrians move much slower than vehicles. Drivers can easily avoid an accident, either by using the brakes or by driving slower. This is not as easy for pedestrians, though. Even running at top speed, a person may not be fast enough to avoid a car.Third, drivers can easily use their horns to warn pedestrians of danger. A drivercannot always expect a pedestrian to get out of the way in time, because sometimes a car is coming so fast that a pedestrian cannot see or hear it. For this reason, drivers have the responsibility to warn pedestrians with their horns before it is too late.Since a pedestrian often risks only his own life, while a car driver is usually risking the lives of others, drivers have a greater responsibility for traffic safety than pedestrians. It is clear, then, that a driver should be held at fault if his or her car runs into a pedestrian, even though the pedestrian may have violated the traffic rules.Topic10---interests and hobbiesWritingWhen we write about an event, we need to state clearly how the event began, how it developed and what it is like now. Almost everything we use in our everyday life comes from Nature. The food we eat, the water we drink, the clothes we wear, the concrete and bricks to build our houses, the materials to make bikes we ride, etc. all come originally from nature.People have been making use of these natural supplies for thousands of years. With the development of technology and the increase of the population, the amount and range of materials taken has increased. It is estimated that this trend will continue in the years to come. However, natural resources are not inexhaustible. Some resources are already nearly used up. For example, the end of the world’s fuel is already within sight. Such an essential daily item as water is in short supply in many parts of the world. We can no longer thoughtlessly use the many resources provided by Nature. We must learn to conserve what remains.Topic 12---language learningWritingA When we write about unreal situations , we often use if clauses. Read the following passage and see how the author writes about unreal situations. If everyone spoke the same languageIt is said that there are at least 2,500 to 3,000 different language in the world. People who speak different languages do not understand each other. If everyone in the world spoke the same language, the world would be quite different from what it is now.First of all, if everyone spoke the same language, it would be very easy for different nations to communicate and understand each other. No translators or interpreters would be necessary at international meetings, so a lot of money would be saved. Second, if everyone spoke the same language, people would live in harmony with each other. People who speak different languages often believe in different religions and this often causes people to misunderstand each other and even leads to conflicts or wars. Therefore, there would be in the world if everyone spoke the same language. Third, if everyone spoke the same language, it would improve cultural and economicexchanges between nations. The difference in language is a great barrier in communication and in international trade, so si everyone spoke the same language, communication and trade between nations could be done more easily. On the other hand, if everyone spoke the same language, there would also be some disadvantages. All the translators and interpreters would be out of work. Above all, the world would not be as interesting as it is now.Topic 13---musicA Jane interviewed one of the singers in Turandot. I have just got home from the cinema and finished the laundry. Mum told me to help her with it because she is not a maid. Before I fall asleep. I have to write down what happened today.Mary and I had an appointment at the shopping centre at 1 p.m, but it wasn’t until1.30 p.m that she arrived. I didn’t have time to get angry with her because we had to run to the cinema in time for the next show. Mary agreed to see the film I picked, although she really wanted to see a musical. The film was such a disappointment. Listening to the formal language all the characters used was really tiresome. Mary said to me, ‘Do think twice next time before you choose a film.’i’m not unhappy about what she said. It is the time wasted on the film that I’m unhappy about. Mary and I made an agreement never to see a film like this again. Maybe next time we can see a musical.B Read what Julia is telling Mary. Many people blame this change on gases such as carbon dioxide. Animals and humans produce carbon dioxide when they breathe. However, many other human activities also let off carbon gases. Anytime something is burnt, carbon is out into the atmosphere. Cars and other vehicles burn petrol in their engines, and electrical power plants most often burn fuels such as coal and oil in order to produce electricity. Therefore, the more petrol and electricity we consume, the more carbon we are lettingoff. One thing we can all do to help solve this problem is to walk or use a bicycle when possible. Although we produce carton when we breathe, the carbon we produce is much less than that produced by a car. Of course, there are times when we need to travel long distances. In this case, public transport such as buses and the underground are always much better choices than a private car or a taxi. If you must drive a car, it is never good to travel alone--you should try to find other people to travel with you. At home, you should use as little energy as possible. Thus off the lights and anything else electrical when not in use. Since factories use a lot of energy and also let off carbon gases, it is important to recycle as much as possible. In particular, metal products and paper products require a lot of energy to produce, so you should find ways to use these again without throwing them away.Last but not least, you can plant a tree, because trees absorb the carbon dioxide in the air to produce oxygen. Planting a small tree is cheap and easy, and two decades from now, when you look at what will have become a large tree, you will find a sense of satisfaction knowing that you did your part to help solve the problem of climate change.Topic 16---successVictoria Brown’s qualities for successMy name is Victoria Brown, and last year I was ranked number 59 on a list of the world’s most successful people, In my opinion, I possess certain qualities that have helped me succeed. I always try to be energetic and enthusiastic, even though I may be tired or busy . Energy and enthusiasm make things work and encourage those people working around you. Interpersonal skills are another key to my success.Every day, I make a point of saying hello to all my staff and spending time listening to their ideas and opinions. This means I am a good anization is also a key aspect of my personality, as is my sense of humor.
