One evening David sat beside his father in a long sofa(沙发). “Why do you have wine before supper?” asked the boy.

“Your father is very tired,” said his mother. “Let him have a good rest, David.”

“It doesn’t matter,” said the father. “I help the farmers plant trees all day.”

“Why do we plant many trees?” asked the boy again.

“Because the trees can change our environment,” answered the father.

“What’s the environment?”

“You are too young. You don’t understand it,” said the father.

“No, I’m six. I’m a young man,” said the boy. “I can understand it well. You must tell me all about it.”

“All right, my young man,” said the father. “The environment means the place, the air, the weather and so on. For example, if we plant many trees, the sky will be clearer, the air will be fresher, we’ll have more rains all the year round and we’ll see birds and animals in the forest. By the way, can you tell me the differences between a bird and an elephant?”

“I have seen them in the zoo. Of course I can tell you,” answered the boy. “Firstly, a bird has wings, and elephant doesn’t. Secondly, an elephant has a trunk (nose) and a long nose, a bird doesn’t.”

“Anything else?” asked the father again.

“Oh, I’m sorry I f orgot. The biggest differences are: A bird can stand on the back of an elephant, an elephant can’t stand on the back of a bird,” answered David again.

The clock had just struck eleven when I first became aware(觉察

到) of a noise coming from the lift. I opened the door of our flat and listened: someone was beating against the door of the lift and calling out at the same time.

“What’s wrong?” I shouted. “The door is stuck, I can’t get out.”The answer came back. The voice, which sounded like that of a girl, came from several floors below.
