Hating the headmaster, helping nuns raise money for survivors, caring his sister carefully, Holton was really a boy beyond a protagonist in the novel.What on earth made Holton become such a kind of younger? In my opinion, there are three reasons. Firstly, every person lives in his specific social background. The book was written after the Second World War, the American society and economy was waiting to recover to the level before the Second World War. Secondly, different person has different living conditions. Holton was living in a middle class. He don’t worry about how to live. So he had much free time to think about the society. And his education in the school planted the social responsibility deeply in his heart. Thirdly, the American value makes contributions to it. It emphasizes a single person is more important than collectivity, which is much different from the values of us. Holton was also believed this value.However, it is such a person that made me think. There is a sentence in the book, “a sign of an immature man is that he is willing to for a cause bravely dying, a mature man of marking is him would like to for a cause meanly alive”. In the ancient China, people were asked to sacrifice for his beliefs. But in the modern society, it becomes different. We are taught to protect our ownlife in any condition. But as a soldier, we should also believe in it. A soldier’s duty is protecting motherland and people. When facing enemies, what choose would you do? Die for defeating them or protect our own life? Of course we will choose the first one. However, I do think Holton was too extreme. Although the society is not so satisfying, we can use our own power to make it change. Resisting is really not a wise choice. Maybe you will say that one person’s power is too weak to make any change, but we can influence people around us. Thousands of little kids, and nobody'saround--nobody big, I mean--except me. And I'm standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff--I mean if they're running and they don't look where they're going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That's all I'd do all day.I'd just be the catcher in the rye and all. The solution, it seems, is to avoid sex altogether, and to hang out with little kids and listen to them sing cute, innocent songs about casual sex.Even more ironic is that Holden says he wants to be the catcher in the rye – he wants to be "catching" all those little children. In his mind, this is protection, but clearly from the poem, the fun in the rye is more about sex than it is about preserving childhood innocence. 他是我们中国读者所熟悉的《麦田守望者》小说的作者。

中国读者也基本上与美国读者一样,除了对他的这部作品熟悉之后,也没有什么其他的可以想得出来的了。

不过,他却因为这惟一一部小说,名垂美国文学史。

他的《麦田守望者》,之所以在中国出名,恐怕也与“麦田守望”这四个字的翻译得十分浪漫有关。

这译名与我们所熟知的“乱世佳人”译名有一拼。

“麦田守望者”跟“乱世佳人”两个汉语翻译最大相同之处就是,它们都与原书名关系不很大。

“乱世佳人”的原名叫“随风飘去”,Gone With The Wind。

而“麦田守望者”的原名“The Catcher In The Rye”,却得需要进一步解释一下,才能清楚。

这本书原英语书名的背后,有个十分有趣的故事。

小说主人公名叫Holden,这是读过这小说的读者,都知道的了。

不过,他是个青少年,还处于英语中的-teen年龄段里,即13到19之间的孩子。

他曾听一个孩子,用歌声唱过苏格兰著名诗人R.彭斯的诗。

彭斯的诗在英国国家里,基本上像李白杜甫们的诗在中国的样子。

彭斯有首名叫“Coming Thro' The R ye”的诗是这样写的:Coming thro' the rye, poor body,Coming thro' the rye,She draiglet a' her petticoatieComing thro' the rye.O, Jenny's a' wat, poor body;Jenny's seldom dry;She draiglet a' her petticoatieComing thro' the rye.Gin a body meet a bodyComing thro' the rye,Gin a body kiss a body -Need a body cry?Gin a body meet a bodyComing thro' the glen,Gin a body kiss a body -Need the warld ken?这里最重复的一句话,就是“Gin a body meet a bo dy / Coming thro' the rye”。

“Gin”是苏格兰英语,等于英语中的“could”,“Rye”是“黑麦”的意思。

在此,可以理解为“黑麦田”。

但Holden却听成了“When a body catch a body, comin' thro' the rye.”即:“有人从黑麦田里,抓住了另个人”。

他却开始沿着这个并不正确的诗句,一直幻想了下去。

他幻想,有一群孩子,在一片高高的黑麦田地里玩耍,而他的角色就是保护孩子,别从高处掉下去。

这一角色,令他心旷神怡。

所以,当他从家里逃跑后,又悄悄地回去,并跟妹妹悄声唠嗑时,就告诉她说,自己真的想成为“a Catcher in the Rye”,也就是“麦田里的C atcher”。

其象征意义就是成为“孩子们的救护者”。

这就是“麦田守望者”书名的来龙去脉。

实际上,这部小说应是一部说教意味较浓的小说,主要讲述青少年成长过程中的痛苦。

主人公最想要的,就是“拒绝成熟”。

他希望了解大自然,喜欢探索人间秘密。

他发现自己经常批评别人的缺点,在自己身上一点都不少。

他对“性”充满了好奇,但却又羞于承认。

他居然连“性”一词,“sex”,都不愿意说出来,却代之以“…ex”。

他说,“…ex is somethi ng I just don’t understand. I swear to God I don’t.”他另外最喜欢用的一个词,就是“虚伪”,英语就是“p honiness”。

因为他发现外面的世界充满了这种“phon iness”。

这让他变得十分沮丧,也很不孤独。

正因此,唤醒读者很多走过的-teen时岁月里的人和事。

这部小说最好能用英语来读。

其实,这小说里所使用的英语,真的不是很难,甚至可以说,连高中生都可以读,并很可能因此产生阅读快乐。

当然,首先有一点,就是读的时候,千万别想什么狗屁“英语语法”,更不能按中学老师们教给大家的方法去读。

因为我知道,中学老师们最大的快乐,就是喜欢肢解英语,并把好生生的一短文字,给肢解到惨不忍睹的地步才成。

为了引起大家的阅读兴趣,我把这小说的开头部分,放到这里,也让我们中国读者感受一下英语的魅力。

不过,假设你一读,就不由自主地,控制不住地,身不由己地,甚至不容分说地开始分析英语语法,也就是肢解英语,却一点没有其他兴趣的话,那我告诉你一个秘密:你的英语,是被你的老师给活生生地践踏至死了。

Pencey Prep is this school that's in Agerst own, Pennsylvania. You probably heard of it. You' ve probably seen the ads, anyway. They advertise i n about a thousand magazines, always showing som e hotshot guy on a horse jumping over a fence. Li ke as if all you ever did at Pencey was play polo all the time. I never even once saw a horse anywhere near the place. And underneath the guy on the horse's picture, it always says:"Since 1888 we ha ve been molding boys into splendid, clear-thinking young men."Strictly for the birds. They don't do a ny damn more molding at Pencey than they do at any other school. And I didn't know anybody there that was splendid and clear-thinking and all. Mayb e two guys. If thatmany.
