Passage One For generations, the Nganyi people of western Kenya have served as rainmakers, helping local communities decide when best to prepare their land and sow their seeds. By observing subtle changes in nature that would be unnoticeable to most people-in air currents, the flowering and shedding of leaves of certain trees, the behaviour of ants, bird songs, etc-they have been able to interpret weather patterns and provide valuable advice. But the irregular weather patterns brought by climate change mean the rainmakers can no longer use those sighs to make their predictions. And they don’t have access to the technologies available to meteorologists (⽓象学家). “Climate change has come on so fast. People don’t know how to adapt or what to plant,”says Obedi Osoce, a traditional weatherman. “Our traditional crops are disappearing because they cannot handle the new conditions. We need new strategies to handle climate change.” Now a British-Canadian project si doing just that, linking the rainmakers with government meteorologists. The two groups get together each season and produce an agreed forecast to be spread using a variety of methods suited to communities where many cannot read or write-through ceremonies, public meetings and person-to person comma-kation. Both parties are pleased with the collaboration. “ I think the two sciences equally valid. We are marrying our energies to help people better,” says Mr. Onunga, a Nganyi community elder involved in the project. ‘The results have been surprisingly good-the community agreed that the forecast was accurate,” says Gilbert Ouma, a lecturer at the University of Nairobi. “Through this project we hope to learn what it is that we can share together to live today and to adapt to tomorrow,”says Professor Laban Ogallo, leader of the Nganyi project. 36. Which of the following has been used by traditional Nganyi rainmakers in weather prediction?A.Plant seedsB.Dog harksC.Bird songsD.Ocean currents 37. What difficulty do local rainmakers face in making weather predictions? A. They cannot find an effective way to deliver messages. B. They lack modern technologies to cope with climate change. C. They cannot get financial support from the local government. D. They lack the facilities to stop traditional crops from disappearing. 38. How do people involved in the British-Canadian project feel about their cooperation?A. SatisfiedB.ConfusedC. HopefulD.Regretful 39. Which statement best expresses the main idea of the passage? A. A British-Canadian project has been carried out to solve farming problems. B. The Nganyi people have made weather forecasts by observing changes in nature. C. New technologies have replaced traditional methods in weather prediction in Kenya. D. Scientists and Kenyan rainmakers work together in a joint weather prediction project. Snowy owls are, in fact, the only white owl, and they are a highly sought after species for many birdwatchers to add to their life lists. Foods: Small mammals, birds, fish. Habitat and Migration: Snowy owls are found in far northern latitudes including tundra, a vast treeless frozen region in the Arctic. Their breeding grounds (繁殖地) are in the Arctic tundra, and they migrate south throughout Canada during the winter. In exceptionally server winters or when food supplies are searce, these owls can appear much further south than their normal range. While principally a North American bird, they can also migrate to the northern areas of Europe an Asia. Behaviour: Snowy owls, like all owls, are powerful animal bunters that are active mostly at night but can bunt and feed during the day, especially when food supplies are low. These owls will rest on the ground or on rocks, stumps and other low favorable points. Boy, I wish .…”He hesitated.Of course Paul knew what he was going to wish for. He was going to wish he had a brother like that. But what the boy said surprised Paul greatly.“I wish,”the boy went on, “that I could be a brother like that.”Paul looked at the boy in surprise, then he said again, “Would you like to take a ride in my car?”“Oh yes, I’d love that.”After a short ride, the boy turned and with his eyes shining, said, “Paul, would you mind driving in front of my house?”Paul smiled a little. He thought he knew what the boy wanted. He wanted to show his neighbors that he could ride home in a big car. His brother gave it to him for Christmas and it didn’t cost him a cent. And some day I’m going to give you one just like it …then you can see for yourself all the nice things in the Christmas windows that I’vebeen trying to tell you about.”7Paul got out and lifted the boy to the front seat of his car. It was not until in my late thirties that I made this important discovery: giving-away makes life so much more exciting. You need not worry if you lack money. This is how I experimented with giving-away. If an idea for improving the window display of a neighborhood store flashes to me, I step in and make the suggestion to the storekeeper. One discovery I made about giving-away is that it is almost impossible to give away anything in this world without getting something back, though the return often comes in an unexpected form. One Sunday morning the local post office delivered an important special delivery letter to my home, though it was addressed to me at my office. I wrote the postmaster a note of appreciation. More than a year later I needed a post-office box for a new business I was starting. I was told at the window that there were no boxes left, and that my name would have to go on a long waiting list. As I was about to leave, the postmaster appeared in the doorway. He had overheard (⽆意中听到) our conversation. “Wasn’t it you that wrote us that letter a year ago about delivering a special delivery to your home?”I said yes.“Well, you certainly are going to have a box in this post office if we have to make one for you. You don’t know what a letter like that means to us. We usually get nothing but complaints.”61. From the passage, we understand that ____________.A. the author did not understand the importance of giving until he was in late thirtiesB. the author was like most people who were mostly receivers rather than giversC. the author received the same education as most people during his childhoodD. the author liked most people as they looked upon life as a process of getting62. When the author needed a post-office box, _______________.A. he had to put his name on a waiting listB. he wrote the postmaster a note of appreciationC. many people had applied for post-office boxes before himD. he asked the postmaster to make one for him65. In reply to the postmaster’s question, the author said _____________.A. it was the special deliveryB. it was the post-office boxC. it was the note of appreciation he wroteD. it was he who wrote him a letter a year agoPart V Translation (10%).66. 房⼦着⽕了,⾥⾯的⼈⾯临着死亡的危险。

Thomas Caraco, a biologist at the University of Rochester, recently studied yellow-eyed juncos over a three-day period to see how they altered their feeding habits in the presence of a trained Harris hawk. When Caraco released the bird, it swooped over the juncos, appearing to attack. The birds reacted by huddling together in a flock. And, despite the threat from above, they spent less time scanning and more time eating the food Caraco provided than they did when foraging individually. To see how the juncos would react if they had somewhere to hide, Caraco placed a Christmas tree in the feeding area. The birds became even freer. One negative note; when the number of birds in the flock increased beyond a certain point, they began to fight. The dominant juncos hogged the food and the meek birds lost out.41. Air conditioning is a method of changing the condition of the air from what it is to what it should be in order to improve your comfort and health. The machinery for doing this is complicated, but the principles of air conditioning are simple. A fan draws in the air from outside the building. The air is full of dust which may affect your health. Therefore, it is first forced through fine screens which catch the dust and filter it out of the air. It cools the air to a temperature that may suit you. The air still contains a proportion of moisture. Too much moisture makes you uncomfortable. Too little makes your nose and throat feel dry. The conditioner adjusts the air to the right proportion of moisture, taking out extra moisture or adding some if there is not enough. The air in your room, too, passes again and again through the conditioner, and in a short time the temperature, the amount of moisture and purity are just right.46. For each of them there are four choices marked [A], [B], [C] and [D]. You should decide on the best choice and write the answers on the answer sheet.. Passage I Boys' schools are the perfect place to teach young men to express their emotions and involve them in activities such as art, dance and music. Far from the traditional image of a culture of aggressive masculinity (阳刚), the absence of girls gives boys the chance to develop without pressure to conform to a stereotype, a US study says. Boys at single-sex schools were said to be more likely to get involved in cultural and artistic activities that helped develop their emotional expressiveness, rather than feeling they had to conform to the "boy code" of hiding their emotions to be a "real man". The findings of the study so against received wisdom that boys do better when taught alongside girls. Tony Little, headmaster of Eton, warned that boys were being faded by the British education system because it had become too focused on girls. He criticized teachers for failing to recognize that boys are actually more emotional than girls. The research argued that boys often perform badly in mixed schools because they become discouraged when their female peers do better earlier in speaking and reading skills. But in single-sex schools teachers can tailor lessons to boys' learning style, letting them move around the classroom and getting them to compete inteams to prevent boredom, wrote the study's author, Abigail James, of the University of Virginia. Teachers could encourage boys to enjoy reading and writing with "boy-focused"approaches such as themes and characters that appeal to them. Because boys generally have more acute vision learn best through touch, and are physically more active, they need to be given "hands-on" lessons where they are allowed to walk around. "Boys in mixed schools view classical music as feminine (女性的) and prefer the modem genre (类型) in which violence and sexism are major themes, "James wrote.Single-sex education also made it less likely that boys would feel they had to conform to a stereotype that men should be "masterful and in charge" in relationships. "In mixed schools boys feel compelled to act like men before they understand themselves well enough to know what that means, " the study reported.1. The author believes that a single-sex school would ____ .A. force boys to hide their emotions to be "real men"B. help to cultivate masculine aggressiveness in boysC. encourage boys to express their emotions more freelyD. naturally reinforce in boys the traditional image of a man2. It is commonly believed that in a mixed school boys _____ .A. Perform relatively better C. behave more responsiblyB. grow up more healthily D. receive a better education3. What does Tony Little say about the British education system?A. It fails more boys than girls academically.B. It focuses more on mixed school education.C. It fails to give boys the attention they need.D. It places more pressure on boys than on girls.4. According to Abigail James, one of the advantages of single-sex schools is ______.A. teaching can be tailored to suit the characteristics of boysB. boys can focus on their lessons without being distractedC. boys can choose to learn whatever they are interested inD. teaching can be designed to promote boys' team spirit5. Which of the following is characteristic of boys according to Abigail James' report?A. They enjoy being in charge. C. They have sharper vision.B. They conform to stereotypes. D. They are violent and sexist.Passage IIAdvertising is a way of bringing information to the public for the purpose(目的)of selling a product, a service, an idea, or an event. Each advertisement is paid for by a person, a group, an organization, or a business enterprise(企业)wanting to advance(推动)his or its goals. In a modern society, everyone uses advertising in one way or another. A person may get a job by answering a classified ad (分类广告). He may decide to join an organization whose advertisements express ideas that interest him. 2012年12月大学英语四级真题试卷(第2套)(题后含答案及解析)题型有:1. Writing 2. Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning) 3. Listening Comprehension 4. Reading Comprehension (Reading in Depth) 5. Cloze 8. TranslationPart I Writing (30 minutes)1.For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay entitled Education Pays based on the statistics provided in the chart below (Unemployment rate in 2010). Please give a brief description of the chart first and then make comments on it. You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words. Education Pays正确答案:Education Pays The bar chart given by US Bureau of Labor Statistics reflects the unemployment rate in 2010 among people with different educational background. From these statistics, it can be seen that the higher degree one possesses, the less likely he is to be unemployed. Generally speaking, two factors have contributed to this phenomenon. For one thing, the advancement of technology and the adjustment of industrial structure lead to a dramatic demand of workforces with high educational degrees. Therefore, it is natural for people with higher educational degrees to enjoy a more steady and well-paid job. For another, those with lower educational degrees tend to be dismissed and substituted more frequently because their jobs usually feature low technologies which can be done by anybody. As far as I am concerned, education is always a worthy investment. So, as individuals, first we should attach great importance to education. Second, the government and authorities should adopt relevant measures to ensure the equity of education. Only in this way can more people get the tickets to a much more comfortable life.Part II Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning) (15 minutes)Directions: In this part, you will have 15 minutes to go over the passage quickly and answer the questions attached to the passage. For questions 1-7, mark:Y (for YES) if the statement agrees with the information given in the passage;N (for NO) if the statement contradicts the information given in the passage;NG (for NOT GIVEN)if the information is not given in the passage.Should Sugar Be Regulated like Alcohol and Tobacco? Sugar poses enough health risks that it should be considered a controlled substance just like alcohol and tobacco, argue a team of researchers from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). In an opinion piece called “The Toxic (毒性的) Truth About Sugar”published Feb. 1 in Nature, Robert Lustig, Laura Schmidt and Claire Brindis argue that it’s wrong to consider sugar just “empty calories. “They write:“ There is nothing empty about these calories. A growing body of scientific evidence is showing that fructose (果糖) can trigger processes that lead to liver toxicity and a host of other chronic diseases. A little is not a problem, but a lot kills—slowly. “Almost everyone’s heard of—or personally experienced—the well-known sugar high, so perhaps the comparison between sugar and alcohol or tobacco shouldn’t come as a surprise. But it’s doubtful that Americans will look favorably upon regulating their favorite vice. We’re a nation that’s sweet on sugar: the average US adult downs 22 teaspoons of sugar a day, according to the American Heart Association, and surveys have found that teens swallow 34 teaspoons. To counter our consumption, the authors advocate taxing sugary foods and controlling sales to kids under 17. Already, 17% of US children and teens are obese (肥胖的), and across the world the sugar intake (摄入) has increased three times in the past 50 years. The increase has helped create a global obesity plague that contributes to 35 million annual deaths worldwide from noninfectious diseases including cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Linda Matzigkeit, a senior vice president at Children’s Healthcare, said “ We have to do something about this or our country is in danger. It’s not good if your state has the second-highest obesity rate. Obese children turn into obese adults. ““ There are good calories and bad calories, just as there are good fats and bad fats, good amino acids (氨基酸) and bad amino acids,” Lustig, director of the Weight Assessment for Teen and Child Health program at UCSF, said in a statement. “But sugar is toxic beyond its calories. “The food industry tries to imply that “a calorie is a calorie,” says Kelly Brownell, director of the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale University. “But this and other research suggests there is something different about sugar,”says Brownell. The UCSF report emphasizes the metabolic (新陈代谢的) effects of sugar. Excess sugar can alter metabolism, raise blood pressure, affect the signaling of hormones and damage the liver—outcomes that sound suspiciously similar to what can happen after a person drinks too much alcohol. Schmidt, co-chair of UCSF’s Community Engagement and Health Policy program, noted on CNN: “ When you think about it, this actually makes a lot of sense. Alcohol, after all, is simply made from sugar. Where does vodka come from? Sugar. “But there are also other areas of impact that researchers have investigated: the effect of sugar on the brain and how liquid calories are interpreted differently by the body than solids. Research has suggested that sugar activates the same reward pathways in the brain as traditional drugs of abuse like morphine or heroin. No one is claiming the effect of sugar is quite that strong, but, says Brownell, “ it helps confirm what people tell you sometimes, that they hunger for sugar and have withdrawal symptoms when they stop eating it. “There’s also something particularly tricky about sugary drinks. “ When calories come in liquids, the body doesn’t feel as full,” says Brownell. “People are getting more of their calories than ever before from sugared drinks. “Other countries, including France, Greece and Denmark, impose soda taxes, and the concept is being considered in at least 20 US cities and states. Last summer, Philadelphia came close to passing a 2-cents-per-ounce soda tax. The Rudd Center has been a strong advocate of a more modest 1 -cent-per-ounce tax. But at least one study, from 2010, has raised doubts that soda taxes would result in significant weight loss:apparently people who are determined to eat—and drink—unhealthily will find ways to do it. Teens—no surprise—are good at finding ways to get the things they can’t have, so state policies banning all sugar-sweetened drinks from public schools and providing only water, milk or 100% fruit juices haven’t had the intended effect of steering kids away from drinking sugared drinks: the average teen consumes about 300 calories per day—that’s nearly 15% of his daily calories—in sweetened drinks, and the food and drink industry is only too happy to feed this need. Ultimately, regulating sugar will prove particularly tricky because it goes beyond health concerns; sugar, for so many people, is love. A plate of cut-up vegetables just doesn’t pack the same emotional punch as a tin of home-made chocolate chip cookies (饼干) , which is why I took my daughter out for a cupcake and not an apple as an after-school treat today. We don’t do that regularly—it’s the first time this school year, actually—and that’s what made it special. As a society, could we ever reach the point where we’d think apples—not a cupcake—are something to get excited over? Says Brindis, one of the report’s authors and director of UCSF’s Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies: “We recognize that there are cultural and celebratory aspects of sugar. Changing these patterns is very complicated. “For inroads (进展) to be made, say the authors in their statement, people have to be better educated about the hazards of sugar and agree that something’s got to change: Many of the interventions (干预) that have reduced alcohol and tobacco consumption can be models for addressing the sugar problem, such as imposing special sales taxes, controlling access, and tightening licensing requirements on vending machines (自动售货机) and snack-bars that sell high sugar products in schools and workplaces. “ We’re not talking prohibition,”Schmidt said. “We’re not advocating a major imposition of the government into people’s lives. We’re talking about gentle ways to make sugar consumption slightly less convenient, thereby moving people away from the concentrated dose. What we want is to actually increase people’s choices by making foods that aren’t loaded with sugar comparatively easier and cheaper to get. “2.Why do some researchers think sugar should be considered “a controlled substance” ?A.It contains nothing but empty calories.B.It is as harmful as morphine and heroin.C.It works the same way as alcohol and tobacco in the human body.D.Excessive intake of sugar results in liver toxicity and various diseases,正确答案:D解析:文章第一段提出将糖归为管制品,是因为其会造成健康风险,第二段引用评论文章来列举糖带来的健康风险:果糖会诱发肝毒性和许多其他慢性疾病的进程,少量的糖不会出问题,但是大量的糖会慢慢导致死亡。

For each of them there are four choices marked A),B),C) and D), You should decide on the best choice.Passage 1Taste is such a subjective matter that we don' tusually conduct preference tests for food. The most you can say about anyone reference is ' that it ' one person ' opinion. But because the two big cola companies---Coca-Ccla and Pepsi Cola---are marketed so aggressivelwe ve wondered how big a role taste preference actually plays in brand loyalty. We set up a taste test that challenged people who identified themselves as either Coca-Cola or Pepsi fans: Find your brand in a blind tasting. We invited staff volunteers who had a strong liking for either Coca-Cola Classicor Pepsi, Diet Coke, or Diet Pepsi. These were people who thought they ' d have notroubt e lling their brand from the other brand. We eventually located 19 regular cola drinkers and 27 diet cola drinkers. Then we fed them four unidentified samples of cola one at a time, regular colas for the one group, diet versions for the other. We asked them to tell us whether each sample was Coke or Pepsi; then we analyzed the records statistically to compare the Participants choices witK what mere guesswork could have accomplished.Getting all four samples right was a tough test, but not too tough, we thought, for people who believed they could recognize their brand. In the end, only 7 out of 19regular cola drinkers correctly identified their brand of choice in all four trials. The diet-cola drinkers did a little worse---only 7 out of 27 identified all four samples correctly. While both groups did better than chance would predict, nearly half theparticipants in each group made the wrong choice two or more times. Two people got all four samples wrong. Overall, half the participants did about as well on the last round of tasting as on the first, so fatigue, or taste burnout, was not a factor. Our preference test results suggest that only a few Pepsi participants and Coke fans mayreally be able to tell their favorite brand by taste and price.31.According to the passage the preference test was conducted in order toA.find out the role taste preference plays in a person s drinkingB.reveal which cola is more to the liking of the drinkersC.show that a person ' s opiniort Oboei is mere guesswork sDp. compare the ability of the participants in choosing their drinks32.The statistics recorded in the preference tests show.A.Coca-Cola and Pepsi are people ' s two most favorite drinksB.There is not much difference in taste between Coca-Cola and PepsiC.Few people had trouble telling Coca-Cola from PepsiD.People ' s tastes differ from one another33.It is implied in the first paragraph that.A.the purpose of taste test is to promote the sale of colasB.the improvement of quality is the chief concern of the two cola companiesC.the competition between the two colas is very strongD.blind tasting is necessary for identifying fans34.The underlined word “brunout (Para. 5)here refers to the state ofA.being seriously burnt in the skinB.being unaable to burn for lack of fuelC.being badly damaged by fireD.being unable to function because of excessive use35.The author ' s purpose in writing this passage is to. It is widely celebrated, with different names, in many countries. Although it started as a religious holiday, it has lost its religious connections in the United States. It is now celebrated largely as a children’s day, and many American children look forward to it for days and weeks before-hand.The orange pumpkin is harvested at this time of year and is hollowed out, a funny face cut into it and a candle placed inside, and put in the window as a decoration. City folks, nowadays, sometimes use paper pumpkins for decorations. Some years ago, the holiday was celebrated by dressing up in strange and frightening costumes and playing tricks on one’s neighbors and friends, such as ringing door bell, throwing bits of corn at window panes, and making small troubles in other ways.More recently, children have begun to go door to door to have friends and neighbors admire their costumes and give treats of candy, fruit or cookies. They say, “Trick or Treat”, meaning, “I will play a trick on you if you don’t give me a treat.” This practice has even recently developed into an international activity. Instead of, or along with candy, children collect money for UNICEF (the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund). This is because most travel companies, hotels and airlines use the Internet for their business and save some of their costs.Booking travel trips online is also much easier. The World Wide Web is open all day, every day and you can make your travel arrangements anytime. You can do it anywhere too, as long as you have a personal computer and reliable Internet connection with you. There is also no need to go to the travel agency to get your tickets or boarding pass, as you can conveniently print them from your computer. It is easy and trouble-free.For cautious travelers, there are travel companies and websites that provide facts about the places that they plan to visit flight and accommodation details and travel tips. They can also send updated information for specificplaces or journeys by email a week or days before the departure date.
Maria Vivas

Now I will talk about the differences between them. The first difference is in appearance. Going around in the U.S., I found that American youth do not really care about their appearance. In the morning, they choose something in their closet and wear it with another thing., often of different colors and styles, without wondering whether their choices make them look strange. The reason behind this is that they don’t care what people look like, but are just interested in their ideas. I think it’s great, but it also causes problems. Since they don’t care about their appearance, they don’t really care about their weight. Often they get fat without realizing it.I observed that there are differences in relationships too. When the American youth fall in love, they don’t really think of the future. Also, there are differences in the rules concerning behavior that is allowed. In some respects, the French are more accepting. For example, in America it is generally unacceptable to make physical display of love. Lovers, in theory, can’t kiss or hold each other everywhere they want. People think that not showing love in public places is a way to respect others. On the contrary, the French youth can do almost everything they want, and they are usually more concerned about the future of the relationship than the American youth. With regard to other types of relationships, there are also big differences. Americans act differently from French people in front of unknown people. When an American girl, for example, arrives in front of people she has never met before, she will talk with them, trying to create a kind of bond between her and this new circle of people. The French girls will just think about rather than really do this kind of thing because they are too shy and lacking in self-confidence.To finish, I noticed that in American classes, when pupils want to say or ask something, they just do it. In general, they don’t really care how the others will judge them. In France, it’s not the same case. If somebody wants to ask something, he/she will think about it before speaking up. I appreciate the freedom in Americans’behavior, ideas, and ways of expressing themselves.1.In this article, the author talks about_____ between American youth and French youth.A)the friendship B) the differences and similaritiesC) the similarities D) the differences2. I have been part of the building .And developing of four active , successful businesses. We are in a great stage ofgrowth and development right now at my company, Progress Productions, and i am reminded every day of some of the most important ideas for progress. Here are five ideas to keep in mind that can make a significant difference in a team:Understand Your PeopleIf I want my team to go and grow with me, I need to find out what excites them. What are their personal drives and what keeps them form being at their best? What do they need in their work environment to improve their mental well-being? What are their fears and concerns,, and how can I help them manage these fears and concerns? What are their values and goals, and how can I ensure they are in agreement with mine? It is important to remember that all your careful planning, you goals, and your purposes will be useless if you need other people to help you make them happen and those people do not have the same level of commitment to them as you.Help People Build Self--confidenceThis is a major discovery for me, During my early years in management. I realized the great power of expectations on performance. As I found, people largely lived up to my expectation of them. SO i learned that if u want to build my business through my people, I have to build their own belief in their capacity to achieve, This belief must be educated. Not to the point of any false belief about current performance, but with a real conviction about potential If I want to lift their achievement, i must help them lift their trust in themselves first.Give People Floors, Walls, but No CeilingsWhile we are growing, we usually want a level of security beneath us ,a floor or a foundation. Keep your people informed of your plans and your activities, so that they know where they stand . Allow them freedom of operation within defined and measurable frameworks, and let them know the sky is the limit for achievement, for recognition, and for reward.Teach people to Treasure RecognitionWherever I speak and give advice to people, they tell me they do not get enough recognition. Sad, is not it? I usually ask them how much recognition they give. They look at me as if i am crazy, but a good culture of recognition should be carefully developed, with praise and appreciation shown both up and down, and sideways, in a team. Find interesting ways to encourage everyone in your team to recognize achievement in others, but be careful to keep it genuine, spontaneous and both individual--and team--based. Teach your team to ask for the opinions of others if they are not receiving recognition the way they want it, and teach them they have the responsibility for creating it.Encourage People to Be CreativeEach one of us has created our life just the way we choose to have it, or at least the way we have settled for it . Those who have been told they are creative will probably use their creativity bravely. Others who have not had their creativity encouraged will mostly believe they are uncreative, I suggest you encourage your people to be creative and brave in trying out new ideas.Building a business is greatly rewarding and building your people is equally rewarding. Seeing your people develop as a result of your encouragement, advising, and management is a great joy!!!1 Form the first paragraph we know the authors present company is _________ A, developing quicklyB. creating important ideasC. progressing productionsD. making a significant difference2 It is necessary to find out your team’s personal drives so that you _________A.can improve their mental well--beingB.Can help them manage their fearsC.Can keep them at their bestD.Can agree with their values and goals3 Careful planning, goals, and purposes will be useful only when_______A.your team members come to helpB.Your team members are resourcefulC.Your team members are interested in themD.Your team members are as committed to them as you4 If you help your employees believe in themselves, you can ______A.receive more educationB.Lift their achievementC.Get more trust from themD.Have more opportunities5 According to the author, an employer should______A.give his people the freedom to do whatever they likeB.Reward his people within defined frameworksC.Provide his people freedom of operation within measurable frameworksD.Tell his people the sky is the limit for operationKey: ACDBCPassage 3Computer VirusesThe computer virus is an outcome of the computer overgrowth in the 1980s. The term computer virus comes from the likeness between the viruses that harm the body and the harmful programs that infect computers. When inside a body, viruses create factories that breed other viruses. However, computer viruses are small programs. They reproduce by attaching a copy of themselves to another program.Once attached to another program, viruses then look for other programs to “infect”. In this way, the virus can spread quickly throughout a single computer or an entire network when it infects a LAN or a multi-user system. At some point, the virus attacks according to how it is programmed. The timing of the attack can be linked to a number of situations, such as a certain time or date, the presence of a particular object, the security level of the user, and the number of times a program is used. Similarly, the pattern of attack comes in different ways. The so-called “harmless”viruses might simply show a message, like the one that infected IBM’s main computer system in 1987 with Christmas greetings. Harmful viruses are designed to damage the system. They can wipe out data, cross out information, or rewrite the hard disk.Main Types of VirusesThere are four main types of viruses: shell, intrusive(侵扰的),operating system, and source code(源代码).Shell viruses wrap themselves around a host program, but don’t change it. Shell programs are easy to write, which is why about half of viruses are of this type.Intrusive viruses invade an existing program and actually place a part of them into the host program. Intrusive viruses are hard to write and very difficult to remove without damaging the host file.Shell and intrusive viruses usually attack executable program files --- those with a .com or .exe extension, although data files are also at risk.Operating system viruses work by replacing part of the operating system with their own code. They are very difficult to write and have the ability, once loaded, to take total control of your syste.Operating system viruses are intrusive programs that are inserted into a source program such as those written in Pascal prior to the program being followed. They are the least common viruses because they are not only hard to write, but also have a limited number of hosts compared with the other types.Be Cautious About the Second Network VirusesDo you believe it? Network viruses can steal money! And they are coming for your computer right now. So far the Internet has become the main channel through which computer viruses spread. Even without getting information from the network, your computer can be infected by the second network computer viruses, which are hidden in some machines on the network. The virus that can steal your money is a kind of the second network viruses. It was designedand inserted in some machines on the network. When your computer is linked to one of these machines, the virus will invade your hard disk and search whether Intuit Quicken, an accounting program, is installed. One of this accounting program’s functions is to transfer accounts automatically. Once the program is infected, your money will be transferred to an additional account opened by the virus program without anybody knowing it.1. Computer viruses are small programs, which _________A, are similar to the viruses that harm the human bodyB. invade a living cell and produce other virusesC. reproduce by attaching a copy of themselves to another programD. come into being during the computer overgrowth in the 1990s2. I was asked to attend because I’m on a television show. I don’t think that most of the kids recognized me as a famous person, but as a big kid who came to play with them for the day. I think I liked it better that way.At the party, they had all kinds of activities. I was drawn to one in particular because all the children were taking part in it. In that activity, anyone who wanted to participate could paint a square. Later all the painted squares were going to be sewn together to make a wall hanging. The wall hanging would be presented to a man who had devoted much of his life to this organization and would soon be retiring. They gave everyone some paints in bright, beautiful colors and asked the kids to paint something that would make the wall hanging beautiful. As I looked around at all the squares, I saw pink hearts and bright blue clouds, beautiful orange sunrise, and green and purple flowers. The pictures were all bright, positive, and uplifting. All except for one.The boy sitting next to me was painting a heart, but it was dark, empty, and lifeless. It lacked the bright, lively colors that his fellow artists had used.At first I thought maybe he took the only paint that was left and it just happened to be dark. But when I asked him about it, he said his heart was that color because his heart felt dark and because he was very sick. He said that his sickness was not ever going to get better. He looked straight into my eyes and said, “There is nothing anyone can do that will help.”I told him I was sorry that he was sick and I could certainly understand why he was so sad. I could even understand why he had made his heart a dark color. But I also told him that it isn’t true that there is nothing anyone can do to help. Other people may not be able to make him better, but we can do things like sharing our time and our love, which in my experience can really help when people are feeling sad. I told him that if he liked, I would be happy to spend some time talking with him so that he could see what I meant. But instead of talking with me, he did something different. He instantly came near to me and wrapped his arms around my neck. When he did this, I thought my own heart would burst with the love for this sweet little boy.He sat there talking with me for a long time and when he had had enough, he jumped down to finish his coloring. I asked him if he felt any better and he said that he did, but he was still sick and nothing would change that. I told him I understood. I walked away feeling sad, but I determined that I would do whatever I could to help. As the day was coming to an end and I was getting ready to head home, I felt aslight pull on my jacket. I turned around and standing there with a smile on his face was the little boy. He said, “My heart is changing colors. It is getting brighter. I think love really does work.”On my way home I felt my own heart and realized it, too, had changed to a brighter color.1.From the first paragraph we know Tuesday’s Children is ___________A.a TV show for small kidsB. a party for small kidsC. a group for helping kids with AIDSD.an organization that author proposed2.What was the purpose of making the all hanging?A.The wall hanging would be given to a man as a gift.B.People will buy it so that more money can be raised for the kids.C.It was a special gift for the kids with AIDS.D.The author wanted it at the day of his retirement.3.Most of the children painted ___________ on the squares.A.white clouds and red sunrisesB.orange hearts and red flowersC.purple hearts and pink flowersD.blue clouds and green flowers4.The heart painted by a boy was very unusual because _________.A.it was bright and livelyB.it was dark and lifelessC.it was of lively colorsD.it was sad to look at5.Why did the boy choose the color?A.Because he thought it looked better.B.Because he happened to like the color.C.Because he felt sick and hopeless.D.Because he had no other colors to use.Key:C A D B CPassage 5Part III Translation1.She wouldn’t take a drink, _____________________(更别提留下来吃饭了。

AThere are many aspects of the women’s liberation movement. Some women agree with all of the goals of women’s liberation. They want full equality with men in every aspect of life. In marriage, they want husbands and wives to share all of the work and responsibilities of a home and family. In work they want women and men to have the same jobs and the same chance to succeed. They want women to be paid just as much as men are for the same work. Other women agree with some ofthe ideas of women’s liberation. They want the same pay if they hold the same job as a man. At home, however , they do not expect their husbands to share in the cleaning, cooking, and other household jobs.It is important to remember that the women’s liberation movement is not concerned only with concrete issues. The movement is also concerned with attitudes and beliefs. One example of this concern is the issue of a women’s identity. A women’s identity is what she thinks she can do. Some women do not thinks she is, and what she thinks she can do. Some women do not think they are capable of doing anything important. The women’s liberation movement would like to help these women improve their views of themselves. This movement of water is called the tide. Tides are caused by the pull of the sun and the moon on the earth’s surface; since the moon is closer, it affects the tides more than the sun. When the moon is directly overhead, it actually pulls on the water that is below it. This causes the water level to rise because the water is pulled away from the earth. As the moon disappears over the horizon, the pull lessens and the water level settles back towards the ocean bottom. When the water reaches its highest level, we have high ride. And when the water comes to its lowest level, we have low tide. From its lowest point, the water rises gradually for about six hours until it reaches high tide.
