When one looks back upon the fifteen hundred years that are the life span of the English language, he should be able to notice a number of significant truths. The history of our been a history of constant change—at times a slow, almost imperceptible change, at other times a violent collision between two languages. Our been a living growing organism, it has never been static. Another significant truth that emerges from such a study is that language at all times has been the possession not of one class or group but of many. 『At one extreme it has been the property of the common, ignorant folk, who have used it in the daily business of their living, much as they have used their animals or the kitchen pots and pans.』① At the other extreme it has been the treasure of those who have respected it as an instrument and a sign of civilization, and who have struggled by writing it down to give it some permanence, order, dignity, and if possible, a little beauty. As we consider our changing language, we should note here two developments that are of special and immediate importance to us. One is that since the time of the Anglo-Saxons there has been an almost complete reversal of the different relationship of words in a sentence. Anglo-Saxon (old English) was a language of many inflections. Modern English has few inflections. We must now depend largely on word order and function words to convey the meanings that the older language did by means of changes in the forms of words. Function words, you should understand, are words such as prepositions, conjunctions, and a few others that are used primarily to show relationships among other words. A few inflections, however, have survived. And when some word inflections come into conflict with word order, there may be trouble for the users of the language, as we shall see later when we turn our attention to such maters as WHO or WHOM and ME or I. The second fact we must consider is that as language itself changes, our attitudes toward language forms change also. 『The eighteenth century, for example, produced from various sources a tendency to fix the language into patterns not always set in and grew, until at the present time there is a strong tendency to restudy and re-evaluate language practices in terms of the ways in which people speak and write.』②1.In contrast to the earlier linguists, modern linguists tend to .A. attempt to continue the standardization of the languageB. evaluate language practices in terms of current speech rather than standards or proper patternsC. be more concerned about language than its analysis or historyD. be more aware of the rules of the language usage2.Choose the appropriate meaning for the word “inflection” used in l ine 4 of paragraph 2.A. Changes in the forms of words.B. Changes in sentence structures.C. Changes in spelling rules.D. Words that have similar meanings.3.Which of the following statements is not mentioned in the passage?A. It is generally believed that the year 1500 can be set as the beginning of the modern English language.B. Some other languages had great influence on the English language at some stages of its development.C. The English language has been and still in a state of relatively constant change.D. Many classes or groups have contributed to the development of the English language.4. The author of these paragraphs is probably a(an) .A. historianB. philosopherC. anthropologistD. linguist5.Which of the following can be best used as the title of the passage?A. 大学英语三级B级-阅读理解(三)大学英语三级B级-阅读理解(三)(总分:25.00,做题时间:90分钟)一、单项选择题(总题数:5,分数:25.00)Task 6The sense of sound is one of our most important means of knowing what is going on around us. Sound has a wasted product, too, in the form of noise. Noise has been called unwanted sound. Noise is growing and it may get much worse before it gets any better.Scientists, for several years, have been studying how noise affects people and animals. They are surprised by what they have learned. Peace and quiet are becoming harder to find. Noise pollution is a threat that should be looked at carefully. There is a saying about it being so noisy that you can't hear yourself think. Doctors who study noise believe that we must sometimes hear ourselves think. If we don't, we may have headaches, other aches and pains, or even worse mental problems.Noise adds more tension (紧张) to a society that already faces enough stress. But noise is not a new problem. In ancient Rome, people complained so much about noise that the government stopped chariots (四轮马车) from moving through the streets at night!Ways of making less noise are now being tested. There are even laws controlling noise. We cannot return to the "good old days" of peace and quiet. But we can reduce noise--if we shout loudly enough about it.(分数:5.00)(1).Why are scientists surprised by the findings in their noise study?(分数:1.00)A.Because the world is becoming more and more noisy. √B.Because they have learned that noise is also a kind of pollution.C.Because noise is an unwanted waste for human beings.·D.Because people knew little about the danger of noise before.解析:细节判断题。

Or else others may think that they are uninterested in the meeting. Active participation involves the following:1. Start a discussion, bringing up new ideas and topics, and making suggestions.2. Asking people for opinions, information, and explanations.3. Repeating ideas and explanations for those who can't understand you.4. Encouraging people to speak by accepting different points of view. If an employee appears to be passive at a meeting, Americans may feel that the person is not contributing to the meeting."Brainstorming" is a common practice at American meetings. The purpose of brainstorming is to express as many ideas as possible on a given question or problem. This technique is used to collect all the ideas of the group, without stopping to discuss the value of each suggestion. First people brainstorm freely; then they narrow down and get rid of ideas or suggestions that are not workable. Brainstorming is a creative process that demands full verbal participation. This method of creating, exploring, and solving problems is foreign to many people whoare not culturally comfortable with "blurting out" (不加考虑的说出) ideas. If you are attending business meeting in America, you'd better ______ .A.speak out your own ideas activelyB.keep silent and listen to the others carefullyC.appear uninterested in the meetingsD.wait for your turn to speak2、When someone can't understand your opinions, you should______ . Education today is not just a high school diploma (文凭) or a college degree. Many adults are not interested in going to college. They are interested in other kinds of learning. For them, learning does not end with a diploma.Continuing education gives these adults the opportunity to increase their knowledge about their own field or to learn about a new field. It also gives them a chance to improve their oldskills or to learn new ones. Scientists, mechanics (技师) and barbers (理发师) can take classes to improve their work skills. . If they know more or learn more, they can get a better job or earn more money.Continuing education classes give more adults the chance to learn new skills. There is usually a large variety of classes to choose from: typing, foreign cooking, photography, auto repair, furniture repair, or swimming. There are only some of the classes available. Some adults take classes for fun or because the class will be useful for them. Other adults take continuing education classes to improve their own lives because they want to feel better about themselves.Almost any community college or public school system has a continuing education program. There are classes in schools, community buildings or churches. Most classes are in the evenings, so working people can attend. The classes are usually small, and they are inexpensive. The new idea about education in the U. S. is that______ . By this definition of art, people who watch a television movie are seeing a form of art. Teenagers who buy and play records of popular music are listening to a form of art. And the millions who read paperback romance or adventure novels are enjoying art in still another form. Art is sometimes divided into two kinds, high art and popular art. High art appeals to a much smaller part of the population than popular art, but the number is large and growing. People who enjoy high art go to the opera and symphony concerts; they read serious books, they go to serious plays; they keep up with the art exhibitions at museums and galleries. Popularart consists primarily of programs which are meant to be watched today and forgotten tomorrow. Many popular songs are hits for a few weeks, then they disappear.11.Art includes creative writing, painting, theatre, music, dance and many crafts, such as pottery. You should make the correct choice.Self-employed private physicians who charge a fee for each patient visit are the foundation of medical practice in the United States. Most physicians have a contract relationship with one or more hospitals in the community. They send their patients to these hospitals, which usually charge patients that they care for. Some hospitals belong to a city, a state or, in the case of veterans’hospitals, a federal government agency. Others are operated by religious orders(教堂) or other non-profit groups. Some medical doctors are on salary. Salaried physicians may work as hospital staff members, or residents, who are often still in training. They may teach in medical schools, be hired by corporations to care for their workers or work for the federal government’s Public Health Service. Physicians are among the best paid professionals in the United States. In the 1980s, it was not uncommon for medical doctors to earn incomes of more than $100,000 a year. Specialists, particularly surgeons, might earn several times that amount. Physicians list many reasons why they deserve to be so well rewarded for their work. One reason is the long and expensive preparation required to become a physician in the United States. Most would be physicians first attend college for four years, which can cost nearly $20,000 a year at one of the best private institutions. Prospective(未来) physicians then attend medical school for four years. Tuition alone can exceed $10,000 a year. By the time they have obtained their medical degrees, many young physicians are deeply in debt. They still face three to five years of residency(实习期) in a hospital, the first year as an apprentice physician. The hours are long and their pay is relatively low. Setting up a medical practice is expensive, too. Sometimes several physicians will decide to establish a group practice, so they can share the expense of maintaining an office and buying equipment. These physicians also of each other’s patients in emergencies. Physicians work long hours and must accept a great deal of responsibility. Many medical procedures, even quite routine ones, involve risk. It is understandable that physicians want to be well rewarded for making decisions which can mean the difference between life and death.36.According to the passage, it is very unlikely that an American hospital is owned by ______.A.a churchB.a corporationC.a cityD.a state正确答案:B37.The expenses for becoming a doctor are spent on ______.A.schooling and trainingB.practice in a hospitalC.facilities he or she uses.D.education he or she provides正确答案:A38.According to the passage, how long does it take for a would-be physician to become an independent physician in the USA?A.About seven years.B.Eight years.C.Ten years.D.About twelve years.正确答案:D39.Sometimes several physicians set up a group medical practice mainly because ______.A.they may have more patientsB.they can take turns to work long hoursC.facilities may be a big burden to an individualD.no one wants to assume too much responsibility正确答案:C40.Which of the following statements could fully express the author’s view towards physicians’ payment in the USA’?A.Physicians’ expensive education and the characteristics of their work make them well deserve the handsome pay.B.It is reasonable for physicians to have a large income because their work is very dangerous.C.Physicians should be better paid because they work long hours under bad conditions.D.Physicians shoulder great responsibilities, so it is understandable that they should be well rewarded.正确答案:ATask 2Directions: This task is the same as Task 1. Task 7Life in the twentieth century demands preparation. Today, all individuals in a country must have adequate schooling to prepare them for their work as well as for their responsibilities as citizens. With this in mind, national leaders everywhere are placing more emphasis on the education of the young. In the United States, government officials, parents, and teachers are working hard to give the children -tomorrow's decision makers -the best preparation available. There is no national school policy in the United States. Each of the fifty states makes its own rules and regulations for its schools, but there are many similarities among the fifty school systems. Public schools in all states are supported by taxes paid by the citizens of the individual state. In most states the children are required to attend school until they reach the age of six. When they become six years old, children begin elementary school. After six years in elementary school, they go into junior high school and remain there for three years. The last three years of their public school education are spent in senior high school, from which they graduate at the age of eighteen.A great number of high school graduates continue their education in one of the many colleges or universities in the country.
