Chinese opera is a combination of Chinese drama and musical theatre, which roots back as far as the third century. There are numerous regional branches of Chinese Opera of which the Beijing Opera (Jingju) is one of the most notable. The Beijing Opera arose in the late 18th century and became fully developed and recognized by the mid-19th century. It was extremely popular in the Qing Dynasty court and has been regarded as one of the cultural treasures of China. Masks are used in Chinese opera. Each color of the mask has a different meaning, portraying a character’s role and illustrating their emotional state and general character.
