Most of my friends' parents just dropped them off around 11am, but my best budOliver's mom stayed since she's friends with my mom. A couple of the other moms stuck around for a little while too to make sure we were being responsible teenagers (ugh, so embarrassing!).My parents hired an attendant from the video game truck company to be there all day to help cycle kids through the different gaming stations and make sure there were no fights over controllers or anything. His name was Demetri and he was actually a really cool high school guy. He didn't treat us like babies and even let us play some of the shooters that were rated a little older than 12.We spent pretty much the whole day just rotating through the different video games and taking turns on the VR setup. I'm awful at VR games since the virtual reality motion makes me nauseous, but it was still crazy immersive and real! A few times we took breaks to go beat up the Llama pinata or for snacks and cake. My mom went all out and made my favorite foods - a Walking Taco bar, pizza bites, chicken nuggets, and she even found this really nicely decorated Fortnite cake!Towards the later afternoon once we'd been gaming for hours, things started to get a little loopy. Lots of ridiculously loud screaming at the screens, jumping around like maniacs, andquoting stupid memes and vines. I may have gotten a little too hyped up at one point and ended up headbutting the TV on the truck when I was way too close during an intense battle royale. It didn't crack or anything, but I got a nice goose egg forming on my forehead. I tried to act all tough and unbothered in front of my friends even though it really stung.Before we knew it, 6pm had rolled around and parents started arriving to collect their monsters and take them home. I was exhausted from the excitement and sugary junk food, but so happy. Everyone raved about what an awesome party it was and asked to come over again soon to play the VR games some more. Success!Once just my family was left, we started on the brutal process of at least getting the trash picked up and balloons collected before calling it a night. Finally being a real tween is so exciting!A few weeks before my birthday, my parents asked me what kind of party I wanted to have. They gave me a few options like having it at a trampoline park, going to the movies with friends, or hosting it at home. I decided pretty quickly that I wanted to have a huge sleepover bash at my house. Sleepovers are just so much fun - staying up late, eating junk food, telling scary stories, and having silly dance parties!My mom put me in charge of making the guest list, which was both fun and really hard. I wanted to invite all my besties ofcourse, but I also had to decide whether to invite just girls or make it a co-ed party. In the end, I went with inviting my closest girl friends plus a few guy friends that I'm really tight with too. This was probably the most fun part of the whole planning process. My friends and I looked at tons of ideas online from unicorn parties to glow-in-the-dark neon themes. We finally decided on a "campy" sleepaway camp theme! I loved the idea of decorating with twinkle lights, camp banners, and even little tents set up around the house. Plus we could do classic camp activities like a talent show, making s'mores, and telling ghost stories. So perfect!In the weeks leading up to the party, Mom and I worked on decorations and activities. We made tons of cool crafts like friendship bracelet keychains to give out as favors, tie-dyet-shirts for everyone to sleep in, and colorful woven lanterns to hang up with fairy lights. Mom is really crafty so she helped make everything look perfect. For food, we planned to have all the typical camp treats like hot dogs, hamburgers, s'mores kits, trail mix, and bug juice punch. I lost that one in about 10 seconds flat. We were all cracking up so hard.Once we had burned off some of that kid energy, we settled down for a backyard BBQ dinner. Mom and Dad had gone all out grilling burgers and hot dogs. We topped them with all the fixings like cheese, relish, mustard, and ketchup. On the side, we had some delicious campfire baked beans, coleslaw, and potato salad. For dessert - you guessed it - s'mores! We took turns roasting our 'mallows over the portable fire pit. Some got a little too charred and burnt but they were still ooey gooey perfection.After we were stuffed from dinner, it was time for another camp tradition - ghost stories! We all gathered around the fire pit with flashlights under our chins, trying to spook each other with our creepiest tales. Madison's story about the killer camp counselor with a hook for a hand totally freaked me out. Kyle's seemed a little too realistic about finding a dead body in the woods. But Amanda's imaginary friend ghost story topped them all - I may have nightmares for weeks!Once we were all sufficiently spooked out, we headed inside to wind down with a couple silly/scary movie choices.
