Sometimes I studied for weeks before a test. Yet I would go in to take the test, only to find I could not answer the questions correctly. I would blank out because of nervousness and fear. I couldn't think of the answer.”These young students were experiencing something called test anxiety. Because a student worries and is uneasy about a test, his or her mind does not work as well as it usually does. The student cannot write or think clearly because of the extreme tension and nervousness. Although poor grades are often a result of poor study habits, sometimes test anxiety causes the low grades. Recently, test anxiety has been recognized as a real problem, not just an excuse or a false explanation of lazy students.Special university advising courses try to help students. In these courses, advisors try to help students by teaching them how to manage test anxiety. These courses teach students how to relax their bodies. Students are trained to become calm in very tense situations. By controlling their nervousness, they can let their minds work at ease. Learned information then comes out without difficulty on a test.An expert at the University of California explains, “With almost all students, relaxation and less stress are felt after taking our program. Most of them experience better control during their tests."21. A University of California advisor said______.A. all students could overcome the anxiety after taking a special test anxiety programB. almost all students felt less stress after taking a University of California advisingcourseC. students found it difficult to improve even though they had taken a special test anxietycourseD. students found it easy to relax as soon as they entered a University of Californiaadvising courseQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage:Water problems in the future will become more intense and more complex. Our increasing population will tremendously increase urban wastes, primarily sewage. On the other hand, increasing demands for water will decrease substantially the amount of water available for diluting wastes. Rapidly expanding industries which involve more and more complex chemical processes will produce large volumes of liquid wastes, and many of these will contain chemicals which are poisonous. To feed our rapidly expanding population, agriculture will have to be intensified. This will involve ever-increasing quantities of agriculture chemicals. From this, it is apparent that drastic steps must be taken immediately to develop corrective measures for the pollution problem. There are two ways by which this pollution problem can be lessened. The first relates to the treatment of wastes to decrease their pollution hazard. This involves the processing of solid wastes "prior to" disposal and the treatment of liquid wastes, or effluents, to permit the reuse of the water or best reduce pollution upon final disposal.A second approach is to develop an economic use for all or a part of the wastes. Farm manure is spread in fields as a nutrient or organic supplement. Effluents from sewage disposal plants are used in some areas both for irrigation and for the nutrients contained. Effluents from other processing plants may also be used as a supplemental source of water. Many industries, such as meat and poultry processing plants, are currently converting former waste production into marketable byproducts. Other industries have potential economic uses for their waste products.26. The purpose of this passage is_______.A. to warn the reader of the dwindling water supplyB. to explain industrial uses of waterC. to acquaint the reader with water pollution problemsD. to demonstrate various measures to solve the pollution problem27. Which of the following points is not included in the passage?A. Industrial development includes the simplification of complex chemical processes.B. Diluting wastes needs certain amount of water.C. Demands for water will go up along with the expanding population.D. Intensive cultivation of land requires more and more chemicals.28. The reader can conclude that_______.A. countries of the world will work together on pollution problemsB. byproducts from wastes lead to a more prosperous marketplaceC. science is making great progress on increasing water suppliesD. some industries are now making economic use of wastes29. The author gives substance to the passage through the use of_______.A. interviews with authorities in the field of water controlsB. opinion and personal observationsC. definitions which clarify important termsD. strong argument and persuasions30. The words "prior to" (Para. 2) probably mean_______.A. afterB. duringC. beforeD. beyondPart III. ClozeDirections: There are a number of blanks in the following passage. For each blank there arefour choices marked A, B, C and D. You should choose the ONE that best fits into the passage. Then mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre. (10%, 10×1 point)With the improvement of engines, airplanes were made to fly faster and faster. Then, man ran 31 a barrier that blocked, for a time, any further increase in speed. The barrier 32 at about 760 miles an hour. When a plane reached this speed it would suddenly begin to shake and act 33 though it were hitting pockets of compressed air. Sometimes the shaking was so strong that the plane got badly 34 . The fact was that the plane had reached the "sound" barrier, so said because it is directly related to the speed of sound. In fact, 760 miles an hour 35 the speed of sound at sea level. 36 a plane is traveling more slowly than sound, the sound waves from the plane can float on ahead of the plane. But when the plane 37 reaches the speed of sound, it keeps in step with the sound waves. At this point, the compression waves cannot get 38 of the plane. Now, if the plane tries to go faster, it must break through the barrier. You can see how breaking through this barrier can be very 39 on the plane. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and marked the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single lien through the center (40%, 20×2 points)Question 36 to 40 are based on the following passage:Cars of 2050 will travel the nation’s highways in never-before-dream-of safety, comfort and convenience. These cars will float along never touching the ground and therefore will have no need for wheels.Annoying highway vibrations, caused by the rotations of the disc-and-tire-wheels, will be things of the past. The coming highway passenger cars will literally fly above the road, supported on columns of air compressed by turning-driven(涡轮驱动的) fans. The car without wheels has been called a “flying car”, and, in a sense, that’s just what it is, however, it will not back out of the family garage, start down the street, and then suddenly go quickly upward heading for some distant point. On the contrary, to avoid problems in aerial navigation, the wheelless vehicle probably will travel no more than three inches above road surface. It will travel over fairly rough road and even over smooth water! The inevitable problems of maritime(水上的) regulations, severe weather conditions, and running out of fuel in remote areas all will require new concepts of operation, servicing and vehicle regulation.36. Some people go on diets. This means they eat less of certain foods, especially fats and sugars. Other people exercise with special equipment, take diet pills, or even have surgery. Losing weight is hard work, and it can also cost a lot of money. So why do so many people in the United States want to lose weight? Many people in the United States worry about not looking young and attractive. For many people, looking good also means being thin. Other people worry about their health. Many doctors say being overweight is not healthy. But are Americans really fat?Almost 30 million American weigh at least 20 percent more than their ideal weight. In fact, the United States is the most overweight country in the world. “The stored fat of adult Americans weighs 2.3 trillion pounds.” Says University of Massachusetts anthropologist(人类学家) George Armelagos. He says burning off that stored energy would produce enough power for 900,000 cars to go 12,000 miles.Losing weight is hard work, but most people want to find a fast and easy way to take off fat. Bookstores sell lots of diet books. These books tell readers how to lose weight. Each year, dozens of new books like these are written. Each one promises to get rid of fat.41. It can be concluded form the passage that ____.A. people think too much of their appearanceB. there is not a sure way of losing weight as yetC. surgery is the fastest way of losing weightD. going on diet is a safe way of losing weightQuestion 46 to 50 are based on the following passage:Modern mass-production methods lower the cost of making goods and this give us better values. At the same time, American ingenuity(独创性)and science are constantly at work, improving the quality of products. In this way, better quality products at good values are continually being brought to the people of all income groups. As an example of how this works, when facial tissues (面巾纸) were first put on the market in 1924, they were made in limited quantities and sold at 65 cents per box of 200. People like these facial tissues immediately and began asking for them when they went into different stores. Because there was such a demand for the product, manufacturers began making tissues in larger and larger quantities. Because the manufacturers were making tissues in greater quantities, their production costs were lowered, so that the cost of tissues went down. IN the meanwhile, the quality of facial tissues was constantly improving, because more manufacturers went into business of making tissues, and each manufacturer strove to make his product better than his competitors’. Today, instead of costing 65 cents, a box of 200 tissues costs around one-third of that price, and they are both softer and stronger. When people are free to compete---when they are free to make more things and make them better---everyone benefits.46. In regard to the production of goods in greater quantities, the author states that ___.A. the price of the goods should dropB. the quality of the goods should improveC. the price and quality should both riseD. the quality should rise and the price should drop47. When the demand for facial tissues increased _____.A. the supply was quickly exhaustedB. its price went upC. the manufacturers tried to improve its qualityD. more manufacturers went into the business of making tissues48. Improved quality of facial tissues resulted from _____.A. mass-production methodsB. popular demand for a better productC. a decrease in production costsD. competition among manufacturers49. According to the passage we can see that lower prices and better quality occur ____.A. as a result of the effect of one on the otherB. always at the same timeC. independently of each otherD. when the demand exceeds the supply50. The author believe that in a nation where free enterprise(自由企业制) exists, manufacturers will produce ____.A. as much as they likeB. better quality merchandise (商品)C. more than they are able to sellD. both A and BQuestion 51 to 55 are based on the following passage:For any Englishman, there can never be any discussion as to who is the world’s greatest dramatist. Only one name can possibly suggest itself to him: that of William Shakespeare. Every Englishman has some knowledge, however slight, of the work of our greatest writer. All of us use words, phrases and quotations form Shakespeare’s writing that have become part of the common property of English-speaking people. Most of the time we are probably part of the common unaware of the source of the words we use, rather like the old lady who was taken to see a performance of Hamlet and complained that it was full of well-known proverbs and quotations.Shakespeare, more perhaps than any other writer, makes full use of the great resources of the English language. Most of us use about five thousand words in our normal employment of English;Shakespeare in his works used about twenty-five thousand! There is probably no better way for a foreigner to appreciate the richness and variety of the English language than by studying the various ways in which Shakespeare uses it. Such a study is well worth the effort (it is not,of course, recommended to beginners),even though some aspects of English usage, and the meaning of many words, have changed since Shakespeare’s day.51. Shakespeare’s writings have become the property of those who are learning to speak English.C. It is likely to be true that people often do not know the origin of the word they useD. All the words people use are taken from the writing of Shakespeare54. What is Hamlet?A. A play written by ShakespeareB. A play recommended by ShakespeareC. A play appreciated by ShakespeareD. A play people have been complaining about55. Why is it worthwhile to study the various ways in which Shakespeare used English?A. English words have changed a lot since Shakespeare’s timeB. By doing so one can be fully aware of the richness of the English languageC. English words are now being used in the same way as in Shakespeare’s timeD. 专升本英语阅读理解练习(带答案)

(⼀一)Many post-80s couples are complaining that going to the movies, shopping or attending parties have become impossible since their kids were born. That' s the way most parents are living their lives, no weekends of their own, no time to visit friends, not even a chance of promotion in their jobs. Asking help from their parents might be a way out,but problems are that some aging parents are not strong enough to take care of the kids, and that the kids may also become too spoiled by their grandparents. Then, here comes a solution: families with kids can form a small group, and parents of each family can take turns to look after all the kids in this group on weekends. Thus, other parents can have some quiet time and feel free to do something they' ve been planning for a long time. At the same time, the kids can make new friends and won' t be hanging around their parents all day long. This is baby-pooling. 1. The older he grew, the fonder he became of them. But he always regretted they had to have an end. So he decided to give half his wealth and his beautiful daughter to the man who could tell him a story without an end. Anybody who failed would be sent to prison for life. The risk was so great that nobody came to the palace to tell the Prince a story for a whole year. Then one day a tall, handsome youngman came and said he wanted to tell a story that would go on forever. The prince agreed but warned him what would happen if he failed. “The risk is worth the head of your fair daughter,” the young man replied poetically(得体地). He then began this well-known story:“Once upon a time there was a certain King who feared famine. So he ordered his men to build an enormous storehouse, which he filled with corn. Then, when it was up, made water-proof and made fire-proof, the King felt happy. But one day he noticed a small hole in the roof and as he looked at it, a locust came out with a grain of corn. A minute later, another locust came out with another grain of corn. Then a third locust with another grain of corn. Then a fourth locust, flying at great speed, pushed through the hole and came out with two grains of corn. Then a fifth locust came and …”“Stop,” shouted the Prince. “I can’t,” answered the young man. “I must go on until I tell you what happened to each grain of the corn.” “But that will go on for ever.” The Prince protested. “Exactly,” the young man replied, and he smiled as he turned towards the Prince’s beautiful young daughter.1. If fun and pleasure are equal to happiness then pain must be equal to unhappiness. But in fact, the opposite is true: more often than not things that lead to happiness involve some pain.As a result, many people avoid the very attempts that are the source of true happiness. They fear the pain inevitably brought by such things as marriage, raising children, professional achievement, religious commitment (预担的义务), self - improvement.Ask a bachelor(单身汉) why he resists marriage even though he finds dating to be less and less satisfying. If he is honest he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment. For commitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure, excitement. Marriage has such moments, but they are not its most distinguishing features.Couples with infant children are lucky to get a whole night’s sleep or a three - day vacation. I don’t know any parent who would choose the word fun to describe raising children. But couples who decide not to have children never know the joys of watching a child grow up or of playing with a grandchild.Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the most liberating realizations. It liberates time: now we can devote more hours to activities that can genuinely increase our happiness. It liberates money: buying that new car or those fancy clothes that will do nothing to increase our happiness now seems pointless. And it liberates us from envy: we now understand that all those who are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all.1.According to the author, a bachelor resists marriage chiefly because ________ .A. he is reluctant to take on family responsibilitiesB. he believes that life will be more cheerful if he remains singleC. he finds more fun in dating than in marriageD. he fears it will put an end to all his fun adventure and excitement2.Raising children, in the author’s opinion is ________ .A. a moral dutyB. a thankless jobC. a rewarding taskD. a source of inevitable pain3.From the last paragraph, we learn that envy sometimes stems from ________ .A. hatred B. misunderstandingC. prejudice D. Ignorance4.To understand what true happiness is one must ________ .A. have as much fun as possible during one’s lifetimeB. make every effort to liberate oneself from painC. put up with pain under all circumstancesD. be able to distinguish happiness from fun5.What is the author trying to tell us?A. Happiness often goes hand in hand with pain.B. One must know how to attain happiness.C. It is important to make commitments.D. It is pain that leads to happiness.(四)How often one hears children wishing they were grown-ups and old people wishing they were young again. Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets. Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities. If a child has good parents, he is well fed, looked after and loved. It is unlikely that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. In addition, life is always presenting new things to the child — things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well known. But a child has his pains:He is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is continually being told not to do things or being punished for what he has done wrong. Therefore, a child is not happy as he wishes to be. When the young man starts to earn his own living, he becomes free from discipline of school and parents; but at the same time he is forced to accept responsibilities. With no one to pay for his food, his clothes, or his room, he has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may get himself into trouble. If, however, he works hard, goes by the law and has good health, he may feel satisfied in seeing himself make steady progress in his job and in building up for himself his own position in society. Old age has always been thought of as the worst age to be; but it is not necessary for the old to be unhappy. With old age comes wisdom and the ability to help others with advice wisely given. The old can have the joy of seeing their children making progress in life; they can watch their grandchildren growing up around them; and, perhaps best of all, they can, if their life has been a useful one, fell the happiness of having come through the battle of life safely and of having reacheda time when they can lie back and rest, leaving everything to others. 1. The happiest people should be those who ______.A. Face up to difficulties in lifeB. Hope to be young againC. Enjoy life in different ageD. Wish to be grown up 2. The word “they”underlined in Line 5, para. 2 refers to ____.A. Older peopleB. New thingsC. ChildrenD. Interests 3. A child has his pains because____. A. He can not do whatever he wants to B. He is not allowed to play in rain C. He has a lot of new things to learn D. He can not play at the seaside freely 4. When a child becomes a grown-up, he is supposed to ____.A.live comfortablyB. Take responsibilitiesC. Make progress in jobD. Impress the society 5. The best title of the passage might be ____.A. Pains and AgesB. Differences in AgesC. The Best Age to BeD. Happiness and Ages(五)"Trend-benders"(反潮族) are people who try to bring old styles back to life, and they encourage people to make some changes in their lifestyles. Trend-benders ride their bikes to work even though they can afford cars, and they write letters instead of e-mail and read paper books instead of e-books. 四川专升本试题

四川专升本试题

四川专升本试题1. 英语部分阅读理解 (共两篇)Passage 1:One of the big differences between written and spoken English is the written form’s preference for long, complex sentences. For example, the scientific article is often heavy with jargon and long sentences like, “The biosphere of Earth, as well as its ecosystems, exhibits a wide range of biodiversity, which is affected by various factors including climate change, habitat loss, and human activities.” On the other hand, when we speak, we tend to use shorter sentences and simpler vocabulary. This is because spoken language tends to be more immediate and direct. We want to get our message across quickly and clearly. For non-native English speakers, mastering the art of writing long sentences can be challenging. However, there are several ways to improve your ability to write complex sentences. First, familiarize yourself with different sentence structures such as using relative clauses, subordinating conjunctions, and coordinating conjunctions. Second, read more academic articles or books written by native English speakers to expose yourself to various sentence structures. Third, practice writing complex sentences and seek feedback from native English speakers or English teachers. It is important to note that while long sentences can be impressive, clarity should always be the priority. Long sentences can easily becomeconfusing and lack coherence if not properly constructed. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure that each sentence conveys a clear and concise message to the reader.Questions:1. According to the passage, what is one of the differences between written and spoken English?2. Why is written English often heavy with jargon and long sentences, according to the passage?3. What are some ways for non-native English speakers to improve their ability to write complex sentences?4. Why should clarity always be the priority when writing long sentences?Passage 2:In recent years, there has been a growing popularity of online education, also known as e-learning. This form of education offers convenience and flexibility, allowing students to access course materials and lectures from anywhere at any time. However, despite its benefits, there are also challenges and limitations to online education that students need to consider. One of the main challenges of online education is the lack of face-to-face interaction with teachers and peers. Traditional classroom settings provide opportunities for students to engage in discussions, ask questions, and receive immediate feedback. In contrast, online education often relies on asynchronous communication, such as forum posts or emails, which may result in delays in receiving responses. This can be particularly challengingfor students who require additional support or prefer a more interactive learning environment.Another limitation of online education is the need for self-discipline and time management skills. Without the structure of a physical classroom and regular class meetings, students may find it difficult to stay motivated and keep up with the coursework. Online education requires a high level of self-motivation and self-regulation to complete assignments and study effectively. Moreover, the lack of hands-on learning experiences can be a drawback of online education, especially for subjects that require practical application. Science labs, art studios, and physical education classes are difficult to replicate in an online setting, limiting students' exposure to hands-on learning opportunities.Despite these challenges, online education can still be a valuable and effective way to learn, especially for individuals with busy schedules or those who prefer independent study. It is important for students to carefully weigh the pros and cons before deciding to pursue online education.Questions:1. What are some benefits of online education, according to the passage?2. What are the challenges of online education in terms of interaction with teachers and peers?3. Why is self-discipline and time management skills important in online education?4. What are some limitations of online education in terms of hands-on learning experiences?2. 数学部分请处理以下算数计算题:1. 24 ÷ 6 =2. 55 + 37 =3. This decline has raised serious concerns among scientists and farmers alike, as honeybees play a crucialrole in the pollination of many crops. Without bees, our food supply would be severely affected.6. The decline in honeybee populations has been attributed toa variety of factors, including the use of pesticides, which can be lethal to the bees. In addition, the loss of natural habitats has made it increasingly difficult for bees to find food and reproduce.7. Some scientists believe that climate change may also be contributing to the problem. Warmer temperatures can disrupt the bees' life cycles, making it harder for them to survive.8. Despite the challenges, there are things that individuals can do to help. Planting flowers in gardens and public spaces can provide bees with the nectar they need to thrive.9. 【提问方式】The best title for this passage would/can be ________.This passage is mainly related to _________.What’s the passage mainly about? What can be learned from the first/second paragraph of this passage? What’s the main idea/subject of the passage? This passage mainly explains ________.【真题解析】In addition to the words brought to English by foreigners, there are plenty of words which the British have collected from the countries they have settled in all over the world. There are even a few Chinese words, which I’m sure a Chinese speaker would never recognize from the way we pronounce them: ―typhoon‖ is a great wind; ―to kowtow‖ is to bow down low; a ―sampan‖ is a small wooden boat. Over 5,000 of the words in common use in English today are words of foreign origin. Some of them are clearly recognizable as foreign like ―judo‖ or ―pizza‖; others now look so English that only a language historian knows where they came from.So English is in a state of permanent development. Both in Britain and abroad it is gaining new words and expressions, and dropping and changing old ones. Words change their meaning, and they go in and out of fashion like hairstyle. Nobody knows all the 4 million words that said to exist; a well-educated person probably uses under 200,000. so don’t be surprised if you never encounter some of the expressions that still appear in school textbooks; and next time you hear somebody using a strange word you haven’t heard before, you can comfort yourself that there may well be a native speaker somewhere who doesn’t know it either.Paragraph 1 mainly tells us that______.A) few English words are of British originB) many English words are over 5,000 years oldC) few English words are of foreign originD) many English words are from other languagesThe main idea of the passage is______.A) the British have collected words from all over the worldB) only a language historian knows of foreign originC) no English speakers knows all English wordsD) English words are changing all the time二、观点态度题观点态度题是指考察作者的观点(opinion)、态度(attitude)以及文章的基调(tone)的题,通常文章中没有直接的答案,必须通过字里行间作者的用词、语气等进行揣摩。

What’s the author’s attitude toward…?The author’s attitude toward…can be best described as _________.This passage can be best described as _________.The tone of this passage can be best described as…?【真题解析】In the United States elementary education begins at the age of six. At this stage nearly all the teachers are women, mostly married. The atmosphere is usually very friendly, and the teachers have now accepted the idea that the important thing is to make the children happy and interested. The old authoritarian要求绝对服从的methods of education were discredit不被认可rather a long time ago—so much so that many people now think that they have gone too far in the direction of trying to make children happy and interested rather than giving them actual instruction. The social education of young children tried t make them accept the idea that human beings in a society need to work together for their common good. So the emphasis is on co-operation rather than competition throughout most of his process. This may seem curious, in view of the fact that American society is highly competitive; however, the need for making people sociable in this sense has come to be regarded as one of the functions of education. Most Americans do grow up with competitive ideas, and obviously quite a few as criminals, but it is not fair to say that the education system fails. It probably does succeed in making most people sociable and ready to help one another both in material ways and through kindness and friendliness. The author’s attitudes towards American education can be best described as____.A)unfriendly B)negative C)tolerant D)favorable三、推断题【解题技巧】推理题不能从文章中直接找到答案,凡是从原文照搬的答案一般都不是正确选项。
