What was more unusual was the way in which he made his dream come true. After high school, he wanted to join the U.S. Air Force but he failed because of his poor eyesight. However, his dream remained. At the age of 33,Ted was a truck driver in Los Angeles. One day, while sitting outside in his garden, he watched planes fly overhead and an idea came to him: to use balloons to fly.A few weeks later, Ted bought 42 huge balloons. He tied them to a chair and then he sat down in the chair with some beer, sandwiches and a gun. His plan was to fly to 10 meters above his garden, enjoy a few hours in the air, and then shoot some balloons with his gun to get back down. But things did not go as he planned.Once his fiends cut the ropes under Ted's chair, the 42 balloons flew into the sky at an astonishing speed until about 4000 meters above the ground with Ted and his chair. He didn’t shoot any of the balloons because he was afraid he might break the balance of his plane. Ted stayed in the sky with his beer and sandwiches for 14 hours, cold and frightened.Planes heading towards Los Angeles’ busy international airport reported the strange sight. And Ted's ballo ons caused great danger to them. At last, Ted gathered his courage to shoot a few balloons and slowly landed on the ground, where many policemen were waiting for him.Ted made his dream come true, but it cost him: he was fined $ 1,500 for breaking the law about air safety. When asked by a reporter why he had done it, Ted answered, “A man can't just sit around and do nothing, he should have his dream and go for it.”24. Why couldn't Ted join the American Air Force?7A. Cold weather during winter months, with low temperatures and freezing cold winds, may keep many people from running in the open air. However, a new study shows that the drop in temperature is a good reason to run. In fact, running in cold weather helps improve one’s performance. Many runners might find it easier to run in winter than in hot weather.Lower temperatures reduce stress on the body. When you run in cold weather, your heart rate is lower. And the body needs less water on a cold day than in warm weather because dehydration levels are lower in winter than in warmer conditions.John Brewer is a professor of applied sports science at ST. Mary’s Univers ity in London. For this study, he and other researchers put a group of people into a room where summer and winter weather conditions are recreated. The test subjects, were asked to run 10,000 meters under both conditions and their biological measurements were recorded and studied. From the study, every movement runners make produces heat. The heat can be really damaging unless the body can lose it. One way in which people lose heat is by sweating. The body loses heat through droplets of sweet. The body also loses it by transporting the blood to the surface of the skin and it puts more stress on the heart, particularly in hot conditions because it’s much harder to lose heat when the outside environment is warm. As the result shows running in hot temperatures results in 6 percent higher heart rates. When running in cold conditions, the body does not have to work hard to pump blood to the skin surface. Therefore, it requires less energy. The most important thing for people who run in cold conditions is to wear the right clothing. Keep as dry as possible when exercising in low temperatures. Wear mittens on your hands instead of gloves. Wear more than one layer of clothing to keep sweat away from your skin. So don’t let winter weather keep you indoors. Simply get ready for the low temperatures and start running.31. Why do most people dislike running outdoors in winter?A. It’s too cold.B. It’s hard to run.C. It’s too easy to sweat.D. It’s bad for the heart rate.32. What does the underline word "dehydration"in Paragraph 3 means the loss of from thebody.A. waterB. heatC. stressD. blood33. Why did John Brewer make a group of people run in a room?A. It was easier to be reduce stress.B. It was easier to produce heat.C. It was easier to recreate different weather conditions.D. It was easier to record their biological measurements.34. What should people wear while running in cold winter?A. A hat.B. Gloves.C. More clothing.D. More than one layer of clothing.35. What’s the purpose of the passage?A. To tell people not to run in summer.B. To describe how runners run in winter.C. To encourage people to run outdoors in winter.D. To compare the advantages of running in winter and in summer.卷II (非选择题,共40分)IV. 任务型阅读(共5小题,每小题2分,计10分)阅读短文,并按要求完成36~40题.There are many charity shops in England. Early in 2017 Professor Craig E.Smith published a study. He and his workmates chose 48 children between four and nine years of age. They told the kids a story about a boy or girldoing something wrong, such as taking a classmate's toy or candy, and then either lying about the wrongdoing to a parent or confessing (承认) it.In each case, they asked the children,“How would the child feel? How would the mother feel?”The children's answers were generally divided according to age, which is in agreement withthe above research, showing a gradual growth of moral understanding in early childhood.More of the four-to-five-year olds thought the child in the story would feel better keeping the stolen candy, lying and getting unpunished. They imagined the parent in the study would beangry with the child who confessed. However, the seven-to-nine-year-olds were more likely (可能的) to think the child would feel better confessing the crime and that the parent would have positive (积极的) feelings towards a confessor.Smith says, “Kids of all ages who expect that a parent would feel happy about a child's confession are more likely to tell the truth rather than lie.Reward the honesty even if you feel, what parents can learn from these studies is to you must punish the wrong action.”He addslisten calmly without getting angry right away when their child confesses.denial”in Paragraph 1 mean?()1、What does the underlined word“A.委屈B.责备C.否认D.拒绝()2、Paragraph 2 mainly tells us______.A.kids can't tell“right”from“wrong”B.it takes time for kids to learn to tell the truthC.it's wrong to punish kids for telling the truthD.all the kids are willing to confess to a bad act()3、What did Smith and his workmates find in their study?A.Older kids are more likely than younger children to confess to a bad act.B.Younger children are more likely than older kids to confess to a bad act.C.The four-to-five-year-olds would feel better confessing the crime.D.The seven-to-nine-year-olds thought parents would be angry with their confessions.()4、According to Professor Smith, what can parents learn from these studies? This may seem strange to you, since nearly 70%of the earth's surface is covered with water. But about 97%of that is sea water or salt water. Man can only drink and use the other 3%of fresh water from rivers, lakes, underground and so on. And we can not even use all of that because some of it has been made dirty.Earth Day is April 22. But on all other days, we must also remember how important water is. The water that we use is the most important natural resource on the earth. Today we face serious water problems. One of them is water pollution. All kinds of things from cars, factories, farmsand homes make our rivers, lakes and oceans dirty. Polluted water is very bad for people to drink. And dirty water is bad for fish, too.How do cars and factories make our water dirty? First they pollute the air. Then when it rains, the rain water makes our drinking water dirty. Dirty rain, called acid rain(酸雨), is also bad for plants, animals and buildings. Scientists say that in 30 years, more than half of the people in the world won't have enough dean water. We have to learn how to stop wasting water. One of the first steps is to develop ways of reusing it. Today in most large cities, water i~ used only once and then sere out into a sewer system(下水道). From there it returns to the sea or goes underground. But even though every large city reused its water, we would still not have enough. So we should make use of sea water by removing the salt in it. If we can take these steps, fresh water won't be used up.1. The world is thirsty for water because______.A.we don't have enough fresh waterB.a lot of water goes into sewer systemsC.only 70% of the earth's surface is waterD.sea water is widely used rather than fresh water2. The underlined word "face" means"______".A.turn the face down B.turn the face upC.turn the face to D.turn the face back3. From this passage, we know acid rain________.A.is only bad for living thingsB.is not bad for buildings and factoriesC.can be produced in factoriesD.is bad for people, animals, plants and buildings4. One difficult way we can solve the problem is to ______.A.use the water with salt in it B.remove the salt from sea waterC.get water from underground D.reuse the water in cities5. What is the best title for this passage?A.Fresh water and sea water B.A thirsty countryC.The importance of water D.The world's water problemPassage DLet us begin by saying what causes our dreams. Our dreams do not come from another world. They are not messages from some outside source .They are not a look into the future, either. All our dreams have something to do with our feelings, fears, longings, wishes, needs and memories. If a person is hungry, or tired, or cold , his dreams may include a feeling of this kind. If the covers on your body, such as a quilt or a blanket, have slipped off your bed, you may dream that you are sleeping on ice or in snow. The material for the dream you will have tonightis likely to come from the experience you have today. So the subject of your dream usually comes from something that has influence on you while you are sleeping(feeling of cold, a noise, a discomfort, etc.)and it may also use your past experiences and the wishes and the interests you have now. This is why children are likely to dream of fairies, older children of school examinations, hungry people of food, home-sick soldiers of their families and prisoners of freedom. To show you how this is happening while you are asleep and how your needs and wishes can all be joined together in a dream, here is the story of the experiment. A man was asleep and the back of his hand was rubbed with a piece of absorbed cotton. He would dream he was in hospital and his charming girlfriend was visiting him, sitting on the bed and feeling gently his hands! There are some scientists who have made a special study of why we dream, what we dreamand what those dreams mean. Their explanation of dreams, though a bit reasonable, is notaccepted by everyone but it offers an interesting approach to the problem. They believe thatdreams are mostly expressions of wishes that did not come true. In other words dreaming is away of having your wishes carried out.1. From the passage we know that our dreams .A. are imagination of our daily lifeB. are man’s curious look into the futureC. have nothing to do with our feelingsD. are to some degree connected with ourfeelings2. In your dream when you feel like eating something it indicates(暗示)that .A. you are in a state of being coldB. you are in a state of being tiredC. you are in a state of hungerD. you should have had your dinner that day3. Some scientists’ explanation of dreams.A. is not widely accepted though a bit reasonableB. gives an exact description of ourlifeC. provides us with information of dreamsD. is of no use for usPassage EThomas I’m not really sure what I’ll do in the years from now. In the wilderness, everyone has his own way to protecthimself. Even plants have their own ways to fight off enemies.Over millions of years, plants have developed their own defense system (防卫系统).Chemicals are fantastically used by plants to survive (幸存). By making their leaves, flowers, roots and fruits poisonous (有毒的) to enemies, plants can fight back. One such plant is the Golden Wattle tree. The British scientist David Cameron has foundwhen an animal eats the tree’s leaves, the amount(数量) of poison increases in the otherleaves. “It’s like the injured leaves telephoning the others to fight together against the enemy,he said. The tree also sends defense messages to neighboring plants by giving out a special smell.Golden Wattle trees in the nearby 45 meters will get the message and produce more poisonwithin 10 minutes. Now, if an enemy eats too many of the trees’ leaves, he will die. Every kind of plant or tree is good at producing a special set of chemicals. Herbivores, likerabbits, can safely eat the leaves of one tree, but they may be poisoned by its neighbor. In this way, plants have not only developed their own defense system, but also shared it withothers. This makes it impossible for a single animal to destroy even a small area of forest.1.From the first 2 paragraphs, we can learn that _________.A. plants can do nothing against their enemiesB. chemicals are quite useful for plants to surviveC. an antelope can always run away from a strong lionD. leaves, roots, flowers and fruits of plants are poisonous2.If animals eat one Golden Wattle tree’s leaves, the tree can________.A. kill the animals with a special smellB. tell other trees to come to protect itC. warn other trees against the animals on the phoneD. send defense messages to the neighboring plants3.The underlined word “herbivores” in the 5th paragraph probably means animals which_____.A.produce poison B.live on small animalsC.like to eat rabbits D.feed on plants or grass4.The last paragraph of the passage suggests that this kind of defense system is ________.A.bad for animals B.good for forestsC.helpful to some animals D.harmful to forests5.The passage is mainly about __________.A.the examples of protecting forestsB.the balance between animals and plantsC.the ways of plants fighting against enemiesD.the relationship between lions and antelopesPassage GHow should you begin and finish an email message to someone you don't know? But John Anthony West says that it’s much older. If he’s right,“everything anybody has learned about ancient civilizations (文明) would have to be completely revised,” he told a magazine.West, a writer and film-maker, first got interested in ancient history after studying the work of a French researcher. The researcher said Egyptian civilization could have developed as early as 30,000 years ago, rather than 4,500 years ago, as most experts believe.West joined a scientist to do research together. Their research suggested that the Sphinx had been worn down (磨损) over the years by water, rather than by sand and wind.Wait a minute? Water? How could that be? The Sphinx is in the Sahara Desert, which has been dry for 12,000 years! However, before that time, it was very green. If it’s true that water wore down the Sphinx, West thinks that it must have been built centuries earlier.Whether West is right or wrong, it’s important to challenge accepted ideas. That’s how science progresses.West gave some advice for kids: If you are interested in a topic, read everything you can on it. Do your own research.
