1.Sailors used to speak of a “jack” when they meant a flag which was set near the bow of a sailing ship. The flag showed the country to which the ship belonged. The Union Jack became the flag of Great Britain. Australia’s flag has the Union Jack in the top left -hand corner together with the stars of the Southern Cross. They have kept this small part of Britain on their flag because their country was first settled by people from Britain. Australia’s flag is the same color as the Union Jack — red, white and blue. The act of joining together is called a “union”. The Union Jack was the name of the flag made when England, Scotland and Ireland joined together to make one country. It all began in 1707, when England and Scotland joined together to become one nation. A flag was made using two crosses — one for the patron saint of each country, which means protector. Many centuries before, the English had taken St. George as their patron saint. His emblem was a red cross on a white background. The Scottish patron saint was St Andrew. In memory of him, they used a white cross on a blue background. This cross was shaped like the letter “X”. The new flag was a mixture of both flags with two sets of crosses. When Ireland joined England and Scotland in 1800, another cross was added. St Parick’s cross of Ireland was red and also shaped like an “X”. All three flags now made up the Union Jack.(1) The Union Jack is the flag of __________.A. the United NationsB. IrelandC. Long, long ago, in a little village lived a humble(谦虚的) man named Ashwin. He went about making ends meet by pulling a rickshaw(人力车) and transporting passengers from one destination to another. Times were hard and he had to take the responsibility for supporting his family. One day, while returning from work, a man who looked like a wealthy person coming from the city stopped his rickshaw. He quickly told Ashwin the place he wanted to visit. His car had broken down and he desperately needed to get to the mentioned address urgently. After an uneventful ride, they reached the destination, and the passenger paid the fare.Ashwin, on returning home, found to his surprise that his passenger just then had dropped a small bag in his rickshaw. On opening it, he found 50 gold coins in it. He showed it to his family who couldn’t believe their luck. His wife said with joy, “Thank goodness. Now we find a solution to our problems.”That night, Ashwin couldn’t sleep. His conscience(良心) kept troubling him. At the crack of dawn, he woke his wife up. He said, “Lalita, I think it’s wrong to keep someone else’s gold coins. I am going to search for the man and hand over the coins to him.” Lalita was shocked and cried, but Ashwin stuck to his word. He tried hard to find the man, but nothing seemed to work.Eventually when he was about to give up, he saw that wealthy passenger. Ashwin ran to him and thrust(塞) the bag in his hand, “Sir, you left this bag in my rickshaw. I have been looking for you since then and I am so relieved to find you. Please take this,” he said.注意:1.续写词数应为150字左右。

高考英语阅读新题型练习题及答案.doc

高考英语阅读新题型练习题及答案Scientists have tried to e up with biological explanations for the difference between boys and girls. However, none were believable enough to explain the general picture. As one scientist points out, “There are slight geic differences between the sexes at birth which may affect the subjects boys and girls choose. But the difficulty is that by the time children reach school age, there are so many other effects that it is almost impossible to tell whether girls are worse at science and m aths, or whether they’ve been brought up to think of these subjects as boys’ ‘territory’”.Statistics show that in mathematics, at least, girls are equal to boys. A recent report suggests that girls only stop studying mathematics because of social attitudes. One of the reports’ authors says, “While it is socially unaeptable for people not to be able to read and write, it is still aeptable for women to say that they are ‘hope-less’ at maths. Our research shows that, although girls get marks which are as good as the boys, they have not been encouraged to do so.”The explanation for the difference, which is very clear during the teenage years, goes as far back as early childhood experiences. From their first days in nursery school, girls are not encouraged to work on their own or toplete tasks, although boys are. For example, boys and not girls, are often asked to ‘help’ with repair work. This encouragement leads to a way of learning how to solve problems later on in life. Evidence shows that exceptional mathematicians and scientists did not have teachers who supplied answers; they had to find out for themselves.A further report on maths teaching shows that teachers seem to give more attention to boys than to girls. Most teachers who took part in the study admitted that they expect their male students to do better at mathematics and science subjects than their female students. All ofthis tends to encourage boys to work harder in these subjects, gives them confidence and makes them believe that they can sueed.Interestingly, both boys and girls tend to regard such‘male’ subjects like mathematics and science as difficult. Yet it has been suggested that girls avoid mathematics courses, not because they are difficult, but for social reasons.Mathematics and science are mainly male subjects, and therefore, as girls bee teenagers, they are less likely to take them up. Girls do not seem to want to be in open petition with boys. Neither do they want to do better than boys because they are afraid to appear less female and so, less attractive.81. Aording to scientific studies, girls can learnmaths as well as boys if.82. Those who made extraordinary contributions in mathematics and science.83. Why are boys favored over girls when it es to mathematics and science?.84. What caused girls to give up mathematics courses?.81. given enough encouragement.82. had the abilities of solving problems by themselves.83. Because teachers expect boys to do better in mathematics and science.84. Social reasons.。

一、阅读理解1Some are concerned that AI tools are turning language learning into a weakening pursuit. More and more people are using simple, free tools, not only to decode text but also to speak. With these apps’ conversation mode, you talk into a phone and a spoken translation is heard moments later; the app can also listen for another language and produce a translation in yours.Others are less worried. Most people do not move abroad or have the kind of on-going contact with a foreign culture that requires them to put in the work to become fluent. Nor do most people learn languages for the purpose of humanising themselves or training their brains. On their holiday, they just want a beer and the spaghetti without incident.Douglas Hofstadter, an expert in many languages, has argued that something profound (深刻的) will disappear when people talk through machines. He describes giving a broken, difficult speech in Chinese, which required a lot of work but offered a sense of satisfaction at the end.As AI translation becomes an even more popular labor-saving tool, people can be divided into two groups. There will be those who want to stretch their minds, expose themselves to other cultures or force their thinking into new pathways. This group will still take on language study, often aided by technology. Others will look at learning a new language with a mix of admiration and puzzlement, as they might with extreme endurance (耐力) sports: “Good for you, if that’s your thing, but a bit painful for my taste.”But a focus on the learner alone misses the fundamentally social nature of language. It is a bit like analysing the benefits of close relationships to heart-health but overlooking the inherent (固有的) value of those bondsthemselves. When you try to ask directions in broken Japanese or ruin a joke in broken German, you are making direct contact with someone. And when you speak a language well enough to tell a story with perfect timing or put delicate differences on an argument, that connection is more profound still. The best relationships do not require a medium.1. What is the first two paragraphs mainly about?A. Communicating through apps is simple.B. Apps provide a one-way interactive process.C. Using apps becomes more and more popular.D. AI tools weaken the needs of language learning.2. What is Douglas’ attitude to language learning?A. Favorable.B. Objective.C. Doubtful.D. Unclear3. What do we know about the second group mentioned in paragraph 4?A. They are keen on foreign culture.B. They long to join in endurance sports.C. They find Al tools too complex to operate.D. They lack the motivation to learn language.4. How does the author highlight his argument in the last paragraph?A. By providing examples.B. By explaining concepts.C. By stating reasons.D. By offering advice.【答案】1. D 2. A 3. D 4. A【解析】这是一篇说明文。

When the employees at the Domino’s pizza place in Salem, Oregon, hadn’t received any order from Kirk Alexander for more than 2 weeks, they knew something wasn’t right. Kirk was a loyal customer and the staff all knew him. So it was natural that they got worried when they had no news about him. Their concern saved his life.Sarah Fuller, the general manager at the Domino’s branch, said that Kirk, who was 48 years old, had been a loyal customer since 2009. “He orders every day, or every other day,” Sarah said.Normally, his order came up on the screen because he ordered online. So we saw it came across the screen and we were thinking, “Oh, Kirk’s order.” After a few days without a single order, Sarah and the staff started to worry.A few Domino’s drivers had mentioned that they hadn’t seen his order come across their screen in a while. Sarah checked the system and saw that no order had come in 11 days. So they decided to investigate.Sarah decided to send Tracy Hamblen, a deliver driver, to Kirk’s place. When he got there, he immediately knew something was wrong. While the lights and TV were on, Kirk did not come to the door. Additionally, his phone went directly to voicemail. So Tracy immediately called 911. But they said that it was just part of their job and they were just doing their job.Para2: A few days later, Kirk was released from the hospital. He came to the Domino’s personally with some homemade cookies to say thank--you to Sarah and the Domino’s staff. The Domino’s mentioned that “Caring for customers should not be taken at face value. We should remember that the customers determine the success of our company and in turn we can also have an impact on their lives, small or big.” Kirk’s story has made this pizza shop even more popular in the community, and it has received more orders ever since.【解析】【分析】文章以人物为线索展开,讲述了一个披萨店的员工,细心地发现近期没有收到来自老顾客Kirk的订单,于是派人前去查看,发现Kirk生病并及时报警就医,确保了Kirk的安全。

A monk used to live in a hut at a side of a village. He read books all day long, without worrying for food or money. He was a very kind and tender-hearted person. All the villagers greatly admired his noble character. That is why everyone offered him food and wanted to help him.Once, it was a cold winter. The monk had a fire burning in his hut for warmth. Suddenly, there was a knock at his door. The monk wondered who it could be out at such a cold night, He opened the door and found a fox out there shivering in cold. She spoke, “I live on the hills out there. Heavy snow is falling there, making my life difficult. Please kindly give me a little room in your hut for the night. I will go away in the morning.” The monk politely called her in and said, “Don’t worry, dear. You can live here as long as you wish.” In the warmth of the heated hut the fox felt very comfortable. The monk gave her some bread and milk. The fox quickly ate it and slept in a corner. In the morning, the fox asked for the permission to leave. The monk told her to come whenever she liked. The fox again came back at the night. The monk talked with her about the day's happenings and gave her some food. After eating, the fox went to sleep.A few months passed and the season changed. One day the fox said, “You took so great care of me all through the winter, I want to do something for you in return.” The monk remarked, “Dear fox, it was my duty to do something for you. Please don't embarrass me by talking in this way.” The fox pleaded, “I am not trying to pay back your kindness. I love you and respect you. By doing something for you I will feel a great pride in me. But sometimes I wish I had a piece of gold. As you know, I have always been relying on the villagers, without whom I would be starving to death. Naturally, it has long been my desire to do something in return for their favor. All I can do is help educate their children. With no access to proper facilities and books, most of the kids in the village stay uneducated. A piece of gold is all I need to equip them with adequate knowledge so that they can have better chances of a bright future.” Hearing this, the fox nodded and promised she would see to it that the monk could have what he was longing for. With these words, the fox left in no time.It was now six months since the fox had gone. The more time went by, the more certain the monk felt that she wouldn't come back. One day, however, there was someone knocking at the door. The monk opened it and much to his astonishment, there stood the fox with a piece of gold in her mouth. She looked much skinnier than he last saw her. Deeply moved, the monk hugged the fox tightly with tears in his eyes. It turned out that the fox spent the last half of a year trying to fulfill her promise and she made it.【解析】【分析】本文属于读后续写。

Two months ago, my friend Lisa, Harry and I, planned to do something adventurous, so we decided to explore a deep cave in the outskirt of our city with some food, water, torches and most importantly our cell phones. But things were not going well. We could not find any vehicle to drop us there. At long last, we managed to find a taxi which took us to the outskirt of the city. Another evidence of bad luck was that Harry had left his cell phone at home. After we got out of the taxi, some of the locals told us the way to the cave. The cave looked very attractive yet still mysterious: the cave was so dark, and the tiny sounds made by the insects and animals could be heard properly, pulling us into the cave with some unknown supernatural power. As we were moving forward we made marks on the rocks along our path to remind us of the exit of the cave. And we always kept our mobiles in switch on mode to contact each other in case we got separated and even worse, lost in the cave.As we were moving forward, Harry felt that somebody was following our footsteps but he left his intuition to a joke. When we reached in the deep of the cave, we lost our way and gradually the fog spread everywhere and we were not able to see each other properly. All of us got very scared of what was happening around us. Suddenly, we noticed that Harry was not with us and then we vaguely heard a shout from the depth of the cave and we thought it was Harry, so we started searching for him. But our torches were left no use in such thick fog.续写词数应为150左右Paragraph 1:So we groped our way towards the direction of the shout._______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________Paragraph 2:After we reunited with Harry, we tried to find the way out._______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________【答案】So we groped our way towards the direction of the shout. Frightened as we were, we still made up our mind to search for Harry. Hardly can we see anything in the completely dark situation, so we had to feel our way to search Harry with all strength. Slowly and cautiously moving forward, we held our hands tightly in order not to be separated. With the voice approaching, we realized we would meet Harry immediately. Fortunately, when finding Harry sitting on the ground, we sighed with a relief. After we reunited with Harry, we tried to find the way out. Without hesitation, we decided to hunt for these marks which we had made before. “I get it!” Harry screamed. Looking up quickly, we found these clear marks easily. It was with the help of these marks that we quickly found the exit. When walking out of the cave, we knew we were saved. From this experience, what we learnt was that it was dangerous to explore the unknown word without a fully detailed plan.【解析】【分析】本文是一篇记叙文,讲述了作者和小伙伴们一起去探索一个位于城市郊区的山洞。

When I was little, I lived in a house with a beautiful garden full of all kinds of flowers, and roses were the most beautiful of them. There was nothing I enjoyed more than sitting in the garden with my mother as she read stories to me. When I was in primary school and old enough to read, I enjoyed reading stories aloud to her.I will never forget one day when I was in the third grade. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had rehearsed (排练) my lines so hard with me. But no matter how easily I acted at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator’s (旁白、解说员)part to the play, and asked me to change roles. Her word, kindly expressed, still hurt, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.I didn't tell my mother what had happened when I went home after school that day. But she sensed my pain. Instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to take a walk in the garden. It was May and roses were blossoming and, under the trees, we could also see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) in the grass, as if a painter had painted our garden with red, yellow and green.I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion. “I think I'm going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling it up by its roots. “From now on, we'll have only roses in this garden.”“But I like dandelions,” I protested. “All flowers are beautiful —— even dandelions.”My mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower is beautiful in its own way, isn’t it?” She asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that I had won her over. “And that is true of people too,” she added. “Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that.” Relieved that she had guessed my pain, I started to cry as I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled reassuringly.注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式作答“But you will be a beautiful narrator,” she said,_______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________After the play, I took home the flower._______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________【答案】“But you will be a beautiful narrator,” she said, reminding me how much I loved to read stories aloud to her. “The narrator's part is just as important as the part of a princess.” Her wise words inspired me with courage and confidence. But on the evening of the performance, I suddenly felt nervous backstage again. My teacher came over to me. “Your mother asked me to give you this,” she said, handing me a dandelion. Looking at it, I knew my mother was out there for me, which calmed me down. After the play, I took home the flower. My mother made it into a dried flower and put it into a glass bottle. Every time I see it, I am reminded of this unforgettable experience. I have taken part in many school plays, tried different roles and made many speeches ever since. Gradually, I’ve become really good at performing and public speaking, seldom feeling nervous onstage now. For this, I am forever grateful to my mother, who have made me what I am today.【解析】【分析】这是一篇记叙文。
