AThank you. It’s my great honor to be given this award. You cannot imagine that I have always been a late starter. Years ago, when I was 16, I took an important exam — GCE(General Certificate of Education), which turned out to be a failure. My dad was reading my report card and saw that my position in class was 29th, but the number in class was 29. It meant that I had achieved the distinction of being bottom of my class.I wasn’t lazy, and I was really trying. You can picture how I felt. Dad put his hand on my shoulder and said, “You can only do the best you can, but whatever you decide to do, make sure you love it.” He was a really sweet guy and a great man. I knew his attempt to hide his disappointment with some of his encouraging words. I was depressed for a week, but his advice was a wake-up call.Fortunately I love working with my hands, and I was good at two things: woodwork and art, and I really loved to draw and paint. I was quite talented. Dad strongly encouraged me to go to art school, which in those days wasn’t the obvious place that a father would suggest. So I got into Hartlepool College of Art. The college was a revelation (出乎意料), the passionate teachers there, who were extremely interested in the students, not just tolerating them but actually engaging with them. It was a world apart from my schooling until then. It’s extraordinary what an enthusiastic teacher can do, drawing the student out, lighting independence, and encouraging a design of your own future, rather than waiting for something to happen. I’m honored to have become one of these passionate teachers years later. My teachers inspired me, and thanks to my dad, here I am tonight. I think I should mention all the talents I have worked with over time, and to my kids and my wife Giannina, thank you.Thank you for this great award. I shall find a very special place for it.1. How did the author feel after taking GCE?A. Happy.B. Upset.C. Tired.D. Relieved.2. What didHartlepoolCollege of Art impress the author most?A. The teachers were strict with students.B. The students set good examples for each other.C. The teachers inspired students’ passion for learning.D. The students got prepared for their lessons independently.3. The author gave this speech to ________.A. share his career choiceB. explain his teaching methodsC. describe his life experienceD. show his appreciationBI dropped out of college after my first year. Three years later, I returned to college after having been stuck in a dead-end job, working at a department store. I saw school as my way out. But I quickly found myself up against the same problems that had caused me to give up before. I was in over my head with college-level algebra (代数) and a heavy workload of reading and writing homework. In addition, I was still unsure of my career (职业) direction。

ABird migration is described as the regular, seasonal movement of bird populations from one place to another and back again. The longer days and rich food of the northern summer provide greater chances for birds to feed their young. The longer daylight hours and enormous food resources allow birds to lay larger eggs than those of related non-migratory species that remain in the tropics all year round. As the days shorten in autumn and the breeding period is over, the birds return to warmer regions where the available food supply differs little with the seasons changing. The advantages of migration make up for the high stress, physical exertion(消耗), and other risks of the migration.Day length is the primary environmental factor that encourages birds to prepare for migration. They have an increased appetite which results in weight gaining, giving them the fat reserves that provide energy for their migratory flight. They also show more activity at night, which is when most birds migrate. While the length of day is the primary reason for migration, birds also respond to temperature changes. For example, if a spring is late and the temperature is lower than normal, birds delay migration; if a spring is early, birds also begin migration early. The timing of the migratory cycle must allow birds to arrive on the breeding site so that there is time tobuild a breeding place, mate, lay the eggs, and hatch the young before the rich food is available to feed the young in the nest. Similarly, if birds wait until the climate in their northern breeding grounds becomes tolerable(可忍受的), there will be no time togain the necessary weight that provides the energy needed for their southbound migration.1. Why do birds migrate to the north in spring?A The temperature in the south has risen.B. They like traveling and enjoy the journey.C. The summer there is warmer than that in the south.D. The environment there is more suitable for them to feed their baby birds.2. What are the two factors that cause birds to migrate?A. Day length and food supply.B. Night length and high stress.C. Bui now researchers are finding that video games can actually change us for the better and improve both our body and mind.Games can help to develop physical skills. Pre-school children who played interactive games have been shown to have improved motor skills, for example they can kick, catch and throw a ball better than children who don’t play video games. A study found that those who played video games were 27 percent faster and made 37 percent fewer errors than those who didn't.Games also benefit a variety of brain functions, including decision-making. People who play action-based games make decisions 25 percent faster than others, according to one study. It was also found that the best gamers can make choices and act on them up to six times a second, four times faster than most people. In another study by researchers from the University of Rochester in New York, experienced gamers were shown to be able to pay attention to more than six things at once without getting confused, compared with the four that most people can normally keep in mind. There is also evidence that gaming can help with psychological problems. At the University of Auckland in New Zealand, researchers asked 94 young people diagnosed with depression to play a 3D fantasy game called SPARX and in many cases, the game reduced symptoms of depression more than conventional treatment.4. An Important Development in GardeningD The Tendency of Gardening in the FutureDContrary to the long-held belief that plants in the natural world are always in competition, new research has found that in severe environments adult plants help smaller ones and grow well as a result. The research, led by Dr Rocio, studied adult and seedling (幼苗)plants in the ecological desert in the south-east of Spain. Dr Rocio said, “If you're a seedling in a poor land — the top of a mountain or a sand hill, for example-and you’re lucky enough to end up underneath a big plant, your chances of survival are certainly better than if you landed somewhere on your own. What we have found, which was surprising, is an established large plant, called a ‘nurse’, protects a seedling; it also produces more flowers than the same plants of similar large size growing on their own.”Other benefits of nurse-seedling partnerships include that more variety of plants growing together can have a positive effect on the environment. For example, vegetation areas with nurse plants with more flowers might be able to attract higher numbers of pollinators(传粉者)in an area, in turn supporting insect and soil life and even provide a greater range of different fruit types for birds and other animals.“The biggest winner for this system of nursing a plant is biodiversity(生物多样性),” Dr Rocio said. “The more biodiversean area, the greater number of species of plants, insect life, mammals and birds, and the better thechances of long-term healthy functioning of the environment and ecosystems. ” This system is win-win for adult and seedling plants in unfavorable environments. The research is of value to those who manage and protect plants in tough environments. Most home gardeners and farmers plan to ensure their soil and conditions are the best they can be for plant growth, but the findings might be of value to those who garden in bare places.12. What is a common understanding of plants?A. They can help each other.B. They can survive ill conditions.C. They compete with each other.D. They grow well on their own.13. What will happen to seedling plants if they grow under adult plants?A. They will produce more flowers.B. They will die owing to competition.C. They will make adult plants larger.D. They will get support from adult plants.14. What is the effect of the nurse-seedling partnership?A. It leads to unfavorable environments.B. It produces long-term healthy chances.C. It attracts higher and larger pollinators.D It provides a more variety of plant types.15. Who will benefit from the new research?A. People studying organic farming.B. People protecting plants on sand hills.C. People wanting to change biodiversity.D. People keeping more animals on the farm.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

Others suggest modifying our moral brains directly, through drugs. The difficulties with this idea are obvious:who decides what makes improvement?Given the practical difficulties of large-scale morality hacking(入侵),we should perhaps stick to education. We are not simply prisoners of our emotions:we can reason our way to workable solutions.Science alone will not get us there. So no,we shouldn't take traditional morality too seriously where it fails to address modern problems.18.J.B.S.Haldane forecasted that scientific development would______.A.lead to the corruption of public moralsB.present a challenge to traditional moralsC.bring disasters and fears to human beingsD.affect human beings powers of adjustment19.We can learn from Paragraph2that______.A.collective wisdom is a good solution to modern challengesB.Robin Dunbar thinks it is hard to build up meaningful relationshipsC.our evolved moral sense is too limited to solve the problems of modern societyD.the large scale of social connections makes our relationships less meaningful20.What is implied in the last paragraph?______A.Most people put the blame for modern problems on science.B.Science can help with the modification of our moral brains.C.The combination of reason and humanity can make more effective morality.D.Human beings have a long way to go before they can overcome modern problems.CSomewhere in the highlands of Afghanistan,a hungry fox pounces(猛扑)on a tasty-looking leopard gecko(豹纹壁虎).But the lizard has a get-out-of-jail-free card:a separable tail. The dropped part waves in an energetic but uncontrolled way around long enough to distract the fox, allowing the gecko itself to run off and hide.Leopard geckos are one of a few lizard species that possess this ability, known as autotomy (自切).The technique is effective, but the tail can account for about a quarter of the lizard's body mass.So how do these animals adapt to losing so much of it that quickly? When geckos lose their tail, they"take this more sprawled posture(四肢伸开的姿势)"and walk with their limbs spread out farther from their body, says Chapman University biologist Kevin Jagnandan. Most researchers initially assumed this posture was a response to a suddenly shifted center of mass. But when Jagnandan observed leopard geckos with a tail in his laboratory,he realized that they wag it as they walk, suggesting that these movements may be key to the lizards'movements. To test this assumption,Jagnandan and his team assessed the postures of10geckos walking in various conditions:with their tail intact(完整的);with their tail restricted by a small section of glued-on fishing rod(whose mass can be neglected);and with their tailself-amputated.These comparisons allowed the researchers to distinguish the effects of lost mass from those of lost tail-wagging on the geckos'movements. The lizards with an immobilized tail adopted ways similar to those with no tail, the researchers reported in a study published in Scientific Reports. This result suggests the sprawling walk they adopt after losing their tail is not compensating for the missing mass but rather for the lack of tail-wagging.Jagnandan thinks tail movements help the lizards keep balance and stability as they walk.He suspects that the tails of mammals living in trees, such as cats and monkeys, serve a similar purpose.Bill Ryerson,a biologist at Saint Anselm College, who was not involved in the study, was surprised by the findings."We thought we had settled it--it seemed pretty open-and-shut"that mass was the main factor,he says. The new study challenges this earlier idea in a "beautifully simple"way,Ryerson adds.Jagnandan hopes that understanding how animals react to missing body parts could ultimately help engineers design robots that can move more efficiently as heavy loads-or even entire limbs---are added and removed.21.From the first two paragraphs we can learn that______.A.the fox likes to play with the gecko's tailB.the fox falls for the trick of the geckoC.moving without a tail is much tougher for the geckoD.the gecko becomes inactive when losing its tail22.Most researchers once thought geckos adopted the sprawled posture because______.A.the posture was key to their movementsB.their center of mass had changedC.the posture was their unique survival skillD.they imitated other mammals'behavior23.What can we know about the findings of the study?______A.They are in accordance with the expectation of Bill Ryerson.B.They were obtained after researchers compared three geckos'movements.C.They solved several mysteries concerning other mammals.D.They can be applied to the field of artificial intelligence.24.What does the passage mainly talk about?______A.Why leopard geckos prefer a habitat in the highlands.B.How leopard geckos play hide and seek games.C.How leopard geckos adapt to losing their tails.D.What role tails play in leopard geckos'life.DFor most of recorded history, the struggle to eat has been the main focus of human activity, and all but a handful of people were either farmers or farm workers.Starvation wasever-present threat.Even the best years rarely yielded much of a surplus to carry over as an insurance against leaner times. In the worst situation, none but the powerful could be sure of a full stomach. Now most people in rich countries never have to worry about where the next meal is comingfrom.In1900two in every five American workers laboured on a farm:now one in5Q does. Even in poor places such as India, where famine still struck until the mid-20th century, the assumption that everyone will have something to eat is increasingly built into the rhythm of life. That assumption, though, leads to complacency(自满情结).Famine has ended in much of the world, but it still stalks parts of Africa一Ethiopia,Mozambique and Zimbabwe,to name three countries, depend on handouts of food. And millions of people still suffer from malnutrition.According to the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation(FAO),some2 billion of the world's7.3billion people do not have enough to eat.Moreover,by2050,the total population is projected to grow to almost10billion.Add this to the rising demand for meat, fish, milk and eggs, which is born of prosperity and which requires extra fodder to satisfy,and70%more food will be needed in2050than was produced in2009,the year the FAO did the calculation. That is a tall order. But it is not impossible.Since the time of Thomas Malthus,an economist writing a little over200years ago, people have worried that population growth would outstrip(超过)food supply. So far,it has not.But neo-Malthusians spot worrying signs. One is that in some places the productivity of staples (主食)such as rice and wheat has reached a plateau(停滞期).Neither new strains nor fancy agrochemicals are raising yields.Nor is there much unfarmed land left that is suitable to be brought under the plough.Neo-Malthusians also suggest that,if global temperatures continue to rise, some places will become unfarmable-particularly poor, tropical regions. These are reasonable, concerns. But they can be overcome by two things:the application and spread of technology, and the implementation of sensible government policies. Agricultural technology is changing fast.Much of this change is brought about by rich-world farmers and by rich fanners in middle-income places like Brazil.Techniques developed in the West一especially genome-based breeding that can create crops with special properties almost to order一are being adapted to make tropical crops.Such smart breeding,in alliance with new, precise techniques of genetic modification, should break through the yield plateaus. It can also produce crops with properties such as drought and heat-resistance that will.reduce the effects of global warming.Drought-resistant maize created in this way is already on the market. The developing world applies as little to existing farming techniques as it does to the latest advances in genetic modification.Yield plateaus are a phenomenon only of the mostintensively farmed parts of the world.Extending to the smallholders and subsistence farmers of Africa and Asia the best of today's agricultural practices,in such simple matters as how much fertilizer to apply and when, would get humanity quite a long way towards a70% increase in output.Indeed, government policy on reducing waste more generally would make a huge difference. The FAO says that about a third of food is lost during or after harvest. In rich countries a lot of food is thrown away by consumers. In poor ones it does not reach consumers in the first place.Bad harvesting practices, poor storage and slow transport mean that food is damaged, spoiled or lost to pests.Changing that, which is mostly a question of building things like better,pest-proof grain silos and monitoring their contents properly, would take a big bite out of the70%increase.The neo-Malthusians may throw up their hands in despair, but consider this:despite all the apparent obstacles, from yield plateaus to climate change,in the six years following the FAO analysis cereal production rose by11%.If growth like that continues it should not only be possible to feed the10billion,but to feed them well.25.According to Paragraphs1and2,we can know that most people in the modern world______.ually take food for grantedB.are successfully getting rid of farmingC.tend to deal with lean years skillfullyD.enjoy equal rights to get good food26.What does the underlined sentence,in Paragraph3probably mean?______A.Feeding a population of almost10billion can be expensive.B.A precise calculation of the food growth rate is hard to make.C.Increasing the output of food by70%in given years is very difficult.D.There is no parallel to the rising demand for high-quality food in history.27.According to the passage,neo-Malthusians______.A.have disproved Thomas Malthus'argumentB.have contributed to the increased output of cropsC.have found that population growth will exceed food supplyD.have claimed that climate change may influence food production28.What can we infer from the example of the develop world in Paragraph7?______A.Technology is of little use if it is not adopted.B.Yield plateaus are common to see all over the world.C.The developing world has got used to existing farming techniques.D.More advanced agricultural practices should be introduced to the developing world.29.The underlined part"take a big bite out of"in the last but one paragraph is closest inmeaning to"______"A.make a big profit ofB.take full advantage ofC.indicate the influence ofD.reduce a significant amount of30.What does the author think of the future of the world's food supply?______A.It is worrying.B.It is promising.C.It is controversial.D.It is uncertain.三、完形填空(本大题共20小题,共20.0分)Since the age of three,Hill had dreamed of becoming a dancer."The only thing that I loved was dance,"she told CBS News. That ambition nearly(31)in2010.Hill,then a17-year-old student in a small town, was in an accident that left her paralyzed from the(32)down.For most people, that would have(33)any hope of a dancing career. For Hill,it was the beginning.(34)being an obstacle, her wheelchair empowered her."I wanted to(35)to my myself I was still'normal'."Hill danced in her wheelchair alongside her school dance team."Half of my body was(36) from me,"Hill told Today."and it definitely took a lot of learning and(37)."After graduation, Hill wanted to(38)her dance network to include women who had(39)various spinal cord injuries but shared her(40)."It was such an amazing experience?"Hoping to reach more people in a(41)city,Hill moved to Los Angeles in2014and formed the Rollettes."I want to(42)the stereotype(模式化观念)of wheelchair users."Dancing on wheels can be just as artful as the foot-based(43).In dance competitions, they rocked their bodies to(44),and struck poses in dynamic routines. They're having fun,and as the audiences'reactions(45),the fun is infectious.Hill has(46)what many of us never will:her childhood dream.(47)the Rollettes have helped her find something else just as(48).Every year she holds a dance camp for wheelchair users to help them find their(49)strength they'venever seen before.In2019,173participants who used to be restricted lonely attended her camp. For many,it was the first time they'd felt they(50).31. Low ceilings, narrow corridors, and windowless offices have the opposite effect.Being able to think without any kind of time pressure is also important when striving for novel ideas.Just as important, interruptions are deadly.A short phone call,e-mail or even a text message can redirect your attention and thoughts. As a more general exercise to nurture our mental flexibility we can try to pay special attention to one of our strongly held beliefs, take it seriously and recall times in the past that we were wrong about something, our intellectual interactions may also be helpful.Deep(1)______into Flexible Thinking Passage outline Supporting details(2)______to possess a flexible mind •Political change along with technological and social changes in our times(3)______for flexible thinking.•Flexible thinking and logical thinking are playing different roles in our daily lives. The latter helps make what we analyze accurate while the former enables us to be(4)______.(5)______to thinking flexibly •(6)______information processors, our brain can either ignore new ideas or kill them(7)______on our experience and expectations.Ways to cultivate flexible thinking •It is better to let our mind off guard occasionally so as to avoid(8)______our ideas to conventional ones.•Adjusting external surroundings(9)______and thinking without time pressure and distractions is also important.•(10)______on one of our strongly held beliefs and having some doubt about it may be of help.五、书面表达(本大题共1小题,共25.0分)52.请认真阅读下面文字,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章.The University of Cambridge confirmed on Monday that it had been using scores from China's national college entrance examination,or gaokao,as part of its admission criteria for Chinese students for several years. It says in Weibo post, however, that it does not admit students only based on their test scores. The University statement came after some Chinese media reported over the weekend that the university would start to admit Chinese students that ranked in the top0.1percent in the gaokao in their province, indicating that it would try to compete for talent with top universities in China. The news immediately became one of the most viewed topics on social media, beingread by280million users on Sina Weibo. The gaokao is increasingly accepted by universities in Australia, the United States, Canada and Europe. The University of New Hampshire became the first US state university to accept the gaokao in its entrance criteria last year. The test is also recognized by30universities in Australia and30in Canada,as well as colleges in Italy, France and Spain.[写作内容]1. 答案和解析1.【答案】C【解析】答案:C.A.imitate模仿;B.appreciate感激;C.anticipate预料、预期;D.equate 使相等。

So far, archaeologists have unearthed masses of important cultural items from four of the pits, including pieces of gold masks, gold foil, bronze(青铜)masks, bronze trees and large numbers of ivories. The rest of the newly discovered pits arc still being dug up.“Surprisingly, we have unearthed some never — heard — of — before bronze items," said Lei Yu, from the Sichuan Archaeology Research Institute. 'Tor instance, some large and well-made bronze items have strange-looking dragon or cow designs on them.”In another major discovery, relics of silk products were found for the first time at Sanxingdui, which shows “the ancient Shu Kingdom was one of the important starts of silk in ancient China" according to Tang Fei, head of the digging team. The new pits sit next to two sacrificial pits discovered in 1986, with areas ranging between 3o square meters and 19 square meters. Together they form an area in which people of the ancient Shu civilization held ceremonies to offer sacrifices to heaven, earth and their forefathers, and prayed for good luck and peace. The Sanxingdui Ruins is regarded as one of the greatest archaeological finds of mankind in the 20th century. The site was accidentally discovered by a farmer in the 1920s. The ruins are located in the city ofGuanghan, about 60 kilometers fromChengduand are believed to be the relics of theShuKingdom.4. Who first discovered the Sanxingdui Ruins?A. A farmer.B. Lei YuC. Tang Fei.D. Archaeologists.COnce small farmers in Masii, a remote village in Kenya, have picked their crops, all they can do is wait until a buyer trucks through. The system works fairly well for beans and corn, but mangoes-the area’s other main crop-spoil (腐烂) more quickly. If the trader is late, they rot. However, a simple coating could change that. A company, SmartTech, has created a product that doubles the shelf life of fresh produce, enabling farmers to access far-off, larger markets. More time forfresh produce on grocers’ shelves also means less food waste-a $2.6 trillion problem, according to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).James Rogers, CEO of SmartTech, wanted to solve the problem for food much in the same way that oxide barriers preventing rust (锈) have achieved for steel. Fortunately, researchers have found when plants made the jump from water to land, they developed cutin(蜡质), a barrier which is made of fatty acids that link together to form a seal around the plant, helping keep water in.The cutin was such a grand strategy that today you’ll still find it across the plant kingdom. SmartTech discovered through researches that an orange can last longer than a strawberry not so much because of the thickness of its skin, but because of the difference in the arrangement of those cutin molecules (分子)on the surface. After extensive trials, Rogers and his team developed a natural and tasteless protective coating from plant material-stems, leaves and skins. The product extends the sweet spot between ripening and rot. And best of all, the treated produce doesn’t require refrigeration.“SmartTech has huge potential to turn poor farmers in Africa into commercial farmers,” says Rogers. “Thatmeans more money in pockets, and more food in stomachs.” But whether the company can cost-effectively reach small farmers in far-off areas still remains a challenge.8. The author mentions the small farmers in Kenya to ________.A. stress their need for preserving produceB. show their challenge in harvesting cropsC. express their wish to reach larger marketsD. evaluate their loss caused by slow transport9. What can we learn about SmartTech’s product?A. It is financially supported by FAO.B. It is intended to replace refrigeration.C. It is designed to thicken produce’s skin.D. It is based on plants’own defence system.10. What will James Rogers probably focus on next?A. How to expand farms.B. How to earn more money.C. How to produce more tasty food.D. How to profit farmers in remote area.11. The main purpose of the passage is to ________.A. promote a productB. present a technologyC. advertise SmartTechD. introduce James RogersDIvrea is a town in the Piedmont province of northern Italy. It is known for its localcarnival(狂欢节)organized in February. The main part of the carnival is the famous Battle of the Oranges (La battaglia delle arance). The Battle includes nine teams who throw oranges at each other during three carnival days – Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.Oranges were not always used in the battle. In the middle ages people used beans. Twice a year the local feudal lord gave a pot of beans to the poor families who, as sign of rebellion, threw them out of their homes. Later beans became part of carnival as sort of “ammunition” for throwing at people passing by.It is still not known why exactly people started using oranges. It is believed that the origin for this tradition is in the mid 19th century. The legend says that local girls, standing on balconies, started to throw some oranges, together with confetti, lupins(白羽扇豆)and flowers, onto the parade carriages. The girls actually wanted to draw attention of boysin the carriages. Boys “answered” by throwing some objects back at girls. Little battle started that way.Battle of the Oranges got strict rules after the World War II. The battles are organized on town's squares. The battles are fought between teams in carriages (symbolizing local the guards of localtyrant(恶霸)) and the teams walking beside those carriages (symbolizing rebellious people of Ivrea).Oranges for the event are brought from the island of Sicily. The oranges used are of low quality, not suitable for humans. About 270,000 kilograms of oranges are used each year. The carnival ends with a silent march on the night of “Fat Tuesday”. The Carnival "general" says goodbye to everyone with the phrase "See you next Fat Thursday at 1 p.m."Special prizes are awarded to three best foot teams, three carriages drawn by two horses and three carriages drawn by four horses. Different elements are judged like for example throwing ability, fair play or decoration of carriages.12. The word "ammunition" (paragraph 3) is closest in meaning to________.A. decorationB. bulletsC. advertisementD. presents13. In Battle of the Oranges, the teams walking beside carriages act as ________.A. the Carnival generalB. the local feudal lordC. the rebellious people of IvreaD. the guards of local tyrant(暴君)14. Which of the following statements about Battle of the Oranges is NOT true?A. In the middle ages, people threw beans out of homes as a sign of rebellion.B. Girls throw oranges towards carriages in the parade to attract the attention of boys inside.C. Tons of oranges are used every year to hold the festival.D. People started to throw oranges because they are of low quality and not suitable to eat.15. What is this passage mainly about?A. A traditional activity in an Italian carnivalB. The origin of Battle of the OrangeC. How people enjoy themselves in the Orange CarnivalD. The rules of activities in carnivals in Italy第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

Living with a local family is one of the fastest ways to immerse yourself in a new culture. Currently, more and more US families are becoming hosts, so we're giving you tips for finding your ideal homestay.1.LocationAs a rule, look for homestays that are close to campus, and research local transport links because their reliability can vary state by state. Also, make a list of your absolute homestay requirements to help refine your search. These can include nearby local amenities(便利设施) or having a home without pets.2.Ideal matchBeing honest with your host family is a must.Essentials such as Wi﹣Fi access and house rules should be agreed on in advance. For instance, if you want at least one meal aday, you'll want to ensure your host can meet your needs.Setting these agreements early on will help you maintain good relations with your hosts. 3.CustomsAdapting to local culture can be tough, so do your best to learn about local laws and etiquette before arriving. However, most hosts are open﹣minded, so don't be afraid to introduce elements of your own culture to help build a good rapport(融洽的关系).4.Be outgoingIt's easy to feel overwhelmed as an overseas student, but do your best to engage with your host family when you can, and don't be afraid to speak up.Apart from general courtesy(礼貌), it's a good way to learn local expressions and get the most out of your homestayexperience. Much like any relationship, you should find a balance between respecting your host and having your needs met.So remember, you can always contact your college or homestay provider for any problems you have.(1)According to the text,in order to find an ideal homestay, one can________.A study any transport link availableB require there be Wi﹣Fi accessC tell hosts about his own cultureD ask hosts to have his needs met.(2)What is the main purpose of the text?________A To help us solve problems about homestays.B To introduce tips on finding dream homestays.C To remind people to get along well with hosts.D To show the importance of understanding customs.18. Up to one fifth of the Amazon rainforest is emitting more CO2 than it absorbs, new research suggests. Results from a decade﹣long study of greenhouse gases over the Amazon basin appear to show around 20% of the total area has become a net source of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. One of the main causes is deforestation. While trees are growing they absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere; dead trees release it again.Millions of trees have been lost to logging and fires in recent years. The results of the study, which have not yet been published, have implications for the effort to combat climate change. They suggest that the Amazon rainforest﹣a vital carbon store, or "sink", that slows the pace of global warming﹣ray be turning into a carbon source faster than previously thought.Every two weeks for the past 10 years, a team of scientists led by Professor Lucinna Gatti.a researcher at Brazil's National Institute for Space Research(INPE), has been measuring greenhouse gases by flying aircraft fitted with sensors over different parts of the Amazon basin. What the group found was startling: while most of the rainforest still retains its ability to absorb large quantities of carbon dioxide﹣especially in wetter years﹣one portion of the forest, which is especially heavily deforested, appears to have lost that capacity.Gatti's research suggests this south﹣eastern part of the forest, about 20% of the total area, has become a carbon source."Each year is worse, " she told Neesnight."We observed that this area in the south﹣east is an important source of carbon. And it doesn't matter whether it is a wet year or a dry year. 2017﹣18 was a wet year, but it didn't make any difference."A forest can become a source of carbon rather than a store, or sink, when trees die and emit carbon into the atmosphere.Areas of deforestation also contribute to the Amazon's inability to absorb carbon.Carlos Nobre, who co﹣authored Prof Gatti's study, called the observation "very worrying" because "it could be showing the beginnings of a major tipping point".He believes the new findings suggest that in the next 30 years, more than half of the Amazon could transform from rainforest into savanna.(1)What can be inferred from paragraph 2?________A One fifth of the total Amazon basin remains a forest.B Carbon dioxide are released by all the Amazon basin.C Growing trees both absorb and release carbon dioxide.D Fires are responsible for the loss of a lot of trees..(2)Which of the following might Professor Luciana Gatti agree with?________A Deforestation has negative effects on the Amazon rainforest.B More carbon will be released in a wet year than in a dry year.C A better year is expected despite the present situation of the area.D There is no need for people to worry about the result of the finding..(3)What might be talked about in the following paragraph?________A Other worrying phenomena about the Amazon.B More explanations for the "Amazon tipping point".C Other people's opinions on effects ofdeforestation. D Comparison between old findings and new ones.19. This is the greatest mystery of our adult life: How can we spend all day typing at a computer and go home feeling exhausted? How could merely activating the small muscles of our fingers leave us worn out at the end of the day? What causes mental fatigue(疲劳)? "It is kind of a mystery, to be honest." said Michael Inzlicht, a University of Toronto psychologist who studies self﹣control, motivation, and fatigue. But scientists do have some clues. There is a hypothesis for why we get so tired from work when we're not physically active. We get so tired because our motivation runs out.As we work on a task.we struggle to focus on it or eventually lose interest in it.We become less motivated to do the task.We become drawn to the things we want to do(scrolling social media or reading music blogs, for instance), rather than the things we have to do.And this tension possibly causes fatigue.Researchers in the UK published new evidence that finds some indirect evidence for the motivational model. This study tracked 100 nurses in the UK over two 1﹣hour shifts.Throughout the shifts, the nurses reported how fatigued they felt at regular intervals. They also wore devices that monitored and tracked the amount of physical activity they were engaged in.When the researchers investigated what could possibly explain the fatigue, they found some interesting patterns. Here's the result: There was no connection between the amount of physical work the nurses did and their feelings of fatigue.Instead, they found this small connection: The nurses who were least likely to feel fatigued from their work also felt the most in control of their work, and the most rewarded or it.These feelings may have boosted their motivation, which may have boosted their perception of having energy.Inzlicht has also found evidence for the motivational model in his work.A few years ago, he and Carleton University psychologist Marina Milyavskaya monitored 159 students at McGill University in Canada for a week."What was surprising to us was the biggest predictor of fatigue, not whether they had exerted self﹣control." Inzlicht said."Instead, the predictor was the number of temptations they felt." "If you're typing at work, and if you're anything like me, you got a few browsers open. These lead to temptations, " he said."Temptations make us less motivated o do our work, which, in turn, may make us tired."And there may be an evolutionary reason for why our brains would do this."As an organism, we need to meet multiple goals to survive." Inzlicht explains. We're not solely focused on finding food or pursuing our passions in life.We need to do all these things to be a healthy, thriving species."Because these multiple goals compete with one another(forour time), we need a mechanism in place that signals.'Hey, stop doing that thing and do something else.'" That mechanism, he suggests, could be fatigue. In this light, boosting our motivation to stay on a task could lead us to feel less fatigued. One study found that just paying people some money when they're exhausted can keep them on task.A similar thing is found in studies on physical endurance: People can be easily pushed to work beyond what they think is their physical limit.(1)Why does the author ask so many questions in the first paragraph?________A To introduce a common phenomenon.B To raise some questions that are appealing.C To lead to the theme and attract attention.D To show the author's concern of the problem..(2)Which one is the hypothesis for why we are often feel exhausted after one﹣day work?________A We are drawn to others things we have to do.B Lacking drive to finish a task leads to tiredness.C Smaller amount of physical activity makes us more tiered.D Better self﹣control can boost one's motivation to work..(3)Which of the following may Inzlicht agree with?________A The person with strong self﹣control can get more reward from work.B The one who are less motivated will be exposed to more temptation.C While typing,we use little part of our muscle, which is more tiring.D Typing with some browsers open will sometimes makes us more tired..(4)Which one can be used to improve an employee's motivation?________A Improving his salary.B Finding his passion.C Boosting hismotivation. D Pushing his physical limits.20. I stumbled on a wallet someone had lost in the street, Wanting to find the owner, I opened it, but it only contained 3 dollars and an old crumpled envelope.I opened the letter and saw a return address and dateline…1924.It had been written 60 years ago.It was a "Dear John" letter that told the recipient, whose name appeared to be Michael, that thewriter could not see him any more because her mother forbade it.Even so, she wrote that she would always love him.It was signed Hannah.I called information, maybe there was a phone listing for the address. The operator hesitantly told me there was a number, but the best she could do was call it and see if they wanted to be connected.I learned that Hannah was now living in a Nursing Home and was given the number. It seemed silly, wanting to contact someone over a letter written 60 years ago, but I felt________.I was told that Hannah was there and though it was fairly late I followed my instinct and went to see her.She was a sweet silver﹣haired lady with a warm smile and a twinkle in her eye.I told her about finding the wallet and showed her the letter. She took a deep breath and said."Young man, this letter was the last contact I ever had with Michael."She said softly, "I loved him very much. But I was only 16 at the time and my mother felt I was too young. If you should find him, tell him I still love him." With tears in her eyes she told me she had never married because no one had matched up to him in her heart.I thanked her and left.As I was waiting by the elevator the nurse there asked."Was Hannah able to help you? " I'd taken out the wallet as she was speaking and she said "Hey, wait a minute that's Michael Goldstein's wallet.I'd recognize it anywhere; he's always losing it."My hands began to shake."Who's Michael Goldstein? " I asked."One of the residents on the 8th floor, That's his wallet for sure." I dashed up to the 8th floor and the nurse on duty told me he was still in the day room.We went into the day room and as soon as Michael saw the wallet a smile of relief crossed his face.I confessed I'd read the letter in an attempt to find the owner of the wallet. The smile on his face disappeared."But I think you'll be happy I did, " I said.I think I know where Hannah is.He grew pale."Where is she? How is she? Please tell me." he begged."She's fine, " I said quietly."I was so in love with that girl and when that letter came, my life came to a halt.I never married.I guess I've always loved her."I asked him to come with me and took him down to the 3rd floor where Hannah was sitting alone, watching television. The floor nurse pointed to Michael."Do you know thisman, Hannah? " She adjusted her glasses but didn't speak.Michael whispered."Hannah.it's me, Michael.Do you remember me? "She gasped."Michael, Michael, I don't believe it.It's you! My Michael." They walked towards one another and embraced. The nurse and I left with tears streaming down our faces.About three weeks later I got a call from the nursing home."Can you break away on Sunday to attend a wedding? Michael and Hannah are going to tie the knot!"It was a beautiful wedding with all the people at the nursing home joining in the celebration.I was the best man! The hospital gave them their own room and if you ever wanted to see a 76﹣year﹣old bride and a 79﹣year﹣old groom acting like two teenagers, you had to see this couple.A perfect ending for a love affair that had lasted nearly 60 years.(1)According to the first paragraph.what kind of letter is a "Dear John" letter?________ A A letter to inform a lover of something important. Most groups of plants and animals are richer in species and more plentiful near the equator. In the ocean, that holds true for cold﹣blooded predators. But warm﹣blooded predators are more diverse toward the poles and noticeably missing from several warm hot spots. Why?John Grady,an ecologist, and his team considered the possibility﹣warm﹣blooded animals need a lot to fuel their metabolism(新陈代谢).Perhaps colder waters are just richer in small fish? But they found that at higher, colder places, there isn't actually much more food around. It's more that warm﹣blooded animals are eating a much bigger share of it than their cold﹣blooded competitors. The real explanation is simple. An animal's speed, swiftness, and intelligence depend on its metabolism, which in turn depends on its temperature.Since birds and mammals can keep heating their bodies in icy conditions, they remain fast and attentive.By contrast, the fish they hunt become slower and duller. At some tipping point of temperature, seals, dolphins, and penguins start outswimming their prey. They become more likely to come upon targets and outpace the cold﹣blooded predators of their own.In Grady's words,"Warm﹣blooded predators are favoured where preys are slow, stupid and cold." That's why sharks and other predatory fish dominate near the equator, but colder waters are the kingdom of whales and seals.By keeping food to themselves in thepoles, these creatures can then specialize on specific types of prey, which makes them more likely to split into separate species. The killer whales of the North Pacific, for example, include mammal eating transients and fish﹣eating, year﹣round residents. But the world is changing It's likely that the surface of the oceans will warn by 2 to 3Cwithin this century.Grad y's team estimates that every time the ocean's surface wars by 1℃,populations of sea mammals will fall by 12%,and populations of seals and sea lions will fall by 21%.But "predictions are hard".Donna Hauser from the University of Alaska Fairbanks notes."Polar bears are losers of a warming world, but some populations are still doing well. Some groups of whales have changed the timing of their migrations;others are hunting in deeper, colder waters. These changes might make sea mammals more adaptable to changing climates.Maybe they just need to find the places where fish remain slow, stupid and cold."第五部分书面表达(满分25分)22. 请阅读下面短文,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章.If you're a kid in South Korea these days, you might have trouble playing the latest online game on your smartphone for as long as you want. That's because the South Korean government has started to take some control over what kids can access on their phones. The government of South Korea as developed an app called Smart Sheriff that lets parents know about the websites their kids visit or the apps they use.South Korea has required that kids 18 and under install this app,or another one like it,on their smartphones. Transfer registration in time.BWilliam had worked hard to pass the exams to enter high school. When the term began, however, his father told him that there was no money to pay for his school fees because of the summer drought. Still, William wanted to learn. He made the village library his school. One day, he found a book calledUsing Energy. On the book’s cover was a picture of windmills, tall steel towers with blades (叶片) spinning like giant fans. He learned that wind—something of which his hometown had plenty—could produce electricity. He couldn’t help picturing his own windmill in mind, but collecting the parts and tools he needed would take months. In a junkyard, he dug through piles of used metal, old cars, and worn-out tractors, searching for anything that might help him construct his machine. He made four-foot-long blades from plastic pipe, which he melted over a fire, flattened out, and hardened with bamboo poles.Earning some money, he paid a blacksmith to attach the piston (活塞) to the pedal sprocket (踏板链轮) of an old bicycle frame. This would be the axle (轮轴) of the windmill. When the wind blew, the spinning blades would turn the bicycle wheel and spin a small dynamo (发电机), donated by his friend. When he had collected all the parts, William began putting them together. He fixed the blades to the tractor fan he found, using washers (垫圈) he’d made from bottle caps. Next he pushed the fan onto the piston joint to the bicycle frame. With the help of his two best friends, Williambuilt a 16-foot-tall tower from trunks of trees and lifted the ninety-pound windmill to the top.The big moments eventually came. He climbed up the tower and connected two wires that held a small bulb. As the wind whipped around him, the blades began to turn, slowly at first, then faster and faster. The light bulb flickered (闪烁), then flashed to life. The crowd cheered from below. “Wachitabwina (well done)!”William’s machine now powered his house. And the story of the boy who’d built a power-generating windmill to rescue his family from the drought spread across the Internet.4. After readingUsing Energy, what did William decide to do?A. Make use of wind.B. Enter a high school.C. Build a village library.D. Learn to survive a drought.5. According to Para.3, which of the following word can best describe William?A. Humorous.B. Determined.C. Cooperative.D. Friendly.6. What can you learn about William’s machine?A. It was built by villagers.B. It worked at the first attempt.C. It took him years to complete it.D. It was made from metal materials.7. What is the besttitle for the passage?A. Winds Of HopeB. Ideas Worth SpreadingC. Learning from ExperienceD. Windmills for VillagesCSmart speakers have proven to be handy devices in hospitals, allowing patients to control independently . And now, researchers from theUniversityofWashingtonhave developed an artificial intelligence system that enables these devices to monitor heartbeats.Using technology to remotely monitor heart rates isn't new. These days most smartwatches and fitness trackers are capable of it. The good thing here is that researchers have figured out a way to use the microphones in smart speakers to do it without requiring physical contact. In a study published inCommunications Biology, the researchers had the smart speakers send out signals that couldn't be heard which were then reflected off a person's body. They then analyzed these signals to identify small chest wall motions related to heartbeats, as well as separate those signals from surrounding noise and breathing. For this particular proof — of — concept setup, the researchers tested this smart speaker on 26 healthy participants and 24 hospitalized patients with various heart conditions, including atrial fibrillation(心房颤动)and heart failure. In both cases, the smart speaker was within 28 -30 milliseconds of an ECG(心电图),the gold standard used in hospitals to discover arrhythmia(心律不齐).Like smartwatches with advanced heart features, using smart speakers in this way opens up the possibility for passive, remote heart monitoring. ECGs, while highly accurate, require a visit to the doctor and several electrodes (电极)to be placed on the body. They,re not capable of continuous monitoring so you're limited to what it picks up at that exact moment in time ——one reason why heart arrhythmia can be so hard to discover.Smartwatches are capable of passive, remote, continuous monitoring, but they require you to wear thedevice at all times to be effective. It's not something that's comfortable for everyone, especially when it comes to sleep and for those with highly sensitive skin. Another issue is that these advanced smartwatches are expensive, while smart speakers are much cheaper.“If you have a device like this, you can monitor a patient on an extended basis and then develop corresponding care plans that satisfy the patient' s needs,“ said Dr. Arun Sridhar, co — senior author on the study. "And the beauty of using this kind of devices is that they are already in people's homes.”8. What does the author focus on in Paragraph 3?A. How the smart speaker works.B. Why the smart speaker is useful.C. The advantages of smart speakers.D. The importance of the study.9. Why is heart arrhythmia difficult to find?A. ECGs are not highly accurate.B. ECGs can't monitor continuously.C. Doctors know little about heart arrhythmia.D. An ECG test is hard to operate and expensive.10. Which statement best explains the characteristics of smartwatches?A. They are comfortable to wear.B. They are friendly to sensitive skin.C. They are effective and cheap.D. They are able to monitor remotely.11. What can we infer from the last paragraph?A. We need to invent more smart devices.B. Care plans are vital to patients with heart failure.C. Smart speakers could be contactless heart monitors.D. Different devices are needed to meet patients, demands.DThe prevalence of melanoma (黑素瘤) has been rapidly rising around the world for nearly a century. While some of the increase may be due to better detection, researchers also believe it’s because we’re spending more time outdoors in the sun, vacationing to warmer climates during the winter and using tanning beds. That rise isconcerning, since melanoma is the most dangerous kind of skin cancer. Most of us know to cover up and apply sunscreen on hot, sunny days, but when fall arrives, we tend to drop those habits. Experts warn that’s a mistake. Though there’s less need for sun protection after summer ends, exposure to UV rays still adds up.What precautions you should take to defend against melanoma during the cooler months depends on where you are in the world. That’s because the further away you are from the equator, the more UV rays weaken in the winter. “In southern England or Canada, the daily dose of UVA on a clear summer day is 6.5 times higher than on a clear winter day,” says Professor Brian Diffey of the British Association of Dermatologists. “People in those countries typically receive only about 5% of their annual UV exposure in the winter months.”But no matter where you are, even during colder, lower risk months, it’s a mistake to put your sun-protection habits on ice. “It’s important to wear sun-screen when there is a lot of glare from the snow,” says Victoria Mar, director of the Victorian Melanoma Service at Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. Finally, you should monitor your moles(痣). “Early detection of melanoma is vital for successful treatment,” says Diffey. If it’s caught before it spreads to other parts of the body, the patient will have 99 % of chance to survive for five years. If it’s caught late, that can drop to 25%. Warning signs are a mole that’s changing size, shape or colour, or one that’s asymmetrical — sometimes referred to as “ugly duckling” moles. If you have concerns, talk to your doctor.12. What’s the main cause of the rise ofmelanoma?A. The climate change.B. Better detection.C. More exposure to the sun.D. The increase ofskin cancer.13.What’s a mistake according to experts?A. Applying sunscreen in summer.B. Wearing sun-screen when there is snow.C. Using sunscreen during lower risk months.D. Dropping sun-protection habits in winter.14. What can we learn from the last paragraph?A. Prevention is better than cure.B. Health is better than wealth.C. A disease known is half cured.D. When the sun comes in, the doctor comes out.15. What is the best title of the text?A. Detect Melanoma.B. Beware Winter Rays.C. Monitor Your Moles.D. Spend Less Time Outdoors.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

2020年江苏泰兴中学高三英语模拟试卷及参考答案第一部分阅读(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项AOne day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more weapon for her to defeat my strange problem inability to read.In the library,I found my way into the "Children's Room." I sat down on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf at random. The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of a beagle. I had recently had a beagle, the first and only animal companion I ever had as a child. He was my secret sharer, but one morning, he was gone, given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him. I never forgot my beagle. Without opening the book—Amos, the Beagle with a Plan ,1 borrowed it from the library for the summer.Under the shade of a bush, I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with difficulty. Though pages were turned slowly, I got the main idea of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. That dog was my dog, and I was the little boy in the book. At the end of the story, my mind continued the final scene of reunion, on and on, until my own lost dog and I were, in my mind, running together. My mother's call returned me to the real world. I suddenly realized something: I had read a book, and I had loved reading that book.I never told my mother about my “miraculous” experience that summer, but she saw a slow but remarkable improvement in my classroom performance during the next year. And years later ,she was proud that her son had read thousands of books, was awarded a PhD in literature, and authored his own books, articles, poetry and fiction. The power of the words has held.1. The author's mother told him to borrow a book in order to ________.A. let him spend a meaningful summerB. encourage him to do more walkingC. help cure him of his reading problemD. make him learn more about weapons2. The book caught the author's eye because .A. it reminded him of his own dogB. he found its title easy to understandC. it contained pretty pictures of animalsD. he liked children's stories very much3. Which one could be the best title of the passage?A. Mum's Strict Order.B. My Passion forReading.C. Reunion with My Beagle.D. The Charm of a Book.BMy school appeared on the news last week because we had made an important change in our local area. Our class had planted a large garden in what was once only a vacant lot. It was a lot of work but it was all worth it. I got blisters(水泡) from digging, and we all got insect bites, too.I learned a lot about gardening and collaboration(合作), and then I learned about the media. Our teacher telephoned the TV station and informed them of what we had accomplished. She spoke with the producer. The producer checked with the directors, but they said there were plenty of stories similar to ours. They wanted to know what was special about our particular garden, since many schools plant them. The teacher explained that, after going on the Internet to learn about the prairie(大草原), we had made a prairie garden. We had gone to a prairie and gotten seeds from the plants, and then we planted them. We did not water the garden, but we did weed it. We decided to let nature water it with rain, since that was how prairies grew in the past. We sent a picture of the garden to the news station. In the picture, the grass was so high that it stood taller than the fourth grade students. As a result, the producer sent a reporter to our school. He interviewed the headmaster and asked him many questions about the garden. After that, they interviewed us, and we explained to them what we had learned through this project. That night, we watched the news, and there we were. The news reporter told our story. It was only two minutes long, but it was us. We were famous. All that work, all those blisters, it was worth it. We knewthatwhen we saw the garden every day, but now we knew that the whole city thought so, too.4. What seemed to be the TV directors’ initial reaction to the garden?A. They were excited.B. They were surprised.C. They were worried.D. They were uninterested.5. What is special about the garden?A. Weeds were allowed to spread naturally.B. The grass grew faster than common grass.C. The seeds came from the plants of a prairie.D. Underground water was used for the plants.6. What does the underlined word “that” refer to in the last paragraph?A. We got blisters on our hands.B. Our hard work was worthwhile.C. The garden would be famous.D. The project would be finished.7. How did the author feel about the project?A. Annoyed.B. Curious.C. Proud.D. Regretful.CSophie became friends with the gray squirrels during her first week atPennState, after spotting them running around and wondering what they would look like with tiny hats on their heads. Today, everyone at the university knows her as the “Squirrel Girl”.Sophie tried bringing them food, and gradually they began to trust her. She managed to put a hat on a squirrel and take a picture. Thinking that her colleagues could do with something to lift their spirits, she started posting similar photos on Facebook. The response was greatly positive, and before long Sophie and her squirrels became an Internetsensation.Growing up in a neighborhood outside ofState College, Sophie was always fond of birds and animals around her home, but she didn't interact with people very much. She was later diagnosed (诊断) with Asperger's syndrome, but the squirrels changed that. “The squirrels help me break the ice, because I'll be sitting here patting a squirrel and other people will come over and well just start like feeding the squirrels together and chatting about them,” she said, “I am a lot more outgoing.”And in case you're wondering how Sophie is able to get the squirrels to do what she wants for her photos, it has a lot to do with food. For example, whenever she wants them to hold or play with something, she puts peanut butter on the prop (道具), and they'll grab it. In the beginning, she would throw peanuts up the trees on campus and invite the squirrels to come down and get them, but they hesitated to approach her. She had the patience to earn their trust, though. This year, Sophie is graduating with a degree in English and wildlife sciences. She wants to be a science writer and educate people on how to preserve the environment. As for her furry friends, Sophie plans to stay in the area and visit them as often as she can.8. What does the underlined word “sensation” in paragraph 2 mean?A. Event.B. Hit.C. Service.D. Addiction.9. What can we learn about Sophie according to paragraph 3?A. How did Mary manage to take photos of squirrels wearing hats?A. By attracting them with food.B. By putting them in cages.C. By playing music to them.D. By dressing like squirrels.11. What do you think of Sophie?A. Tolerant and capable.B. Sociable and aggressive.C. Patient and caring.D. Indifferent and appreciative.DMany cars in advertisements and on exhibition in the United States are red, blue or green, but almost 75 percent of new cars sold in the United States are black, white, silver orgray.Les Jackson is a reporter who writes about cars. He says the color1 s of cars Americans choose do not show dirt. He says that means the owners wash their cars less in order to save money. And he notes some areas that are suffering from water shortages do not permit people to wash their cars often.Dan Benton works for a company called Axalta, which makes supplies for international car makers. He says white cars are often sold more expensive than cars of other color1 s. And he notes that white cars “absorb(吸收)less energy” than cars of other color1 s. This means temperatures inside them are lower in warmer areas. Benton also says research at Monash University in Australia suggests that there is a lower risk of crashes during the day for white cars compared with darker ones.Car buyers in other countries also like white. Jane Harrington works for PPG Industries, a company that makes paint for cars. She said in China, buyers say white makes a small car look bigger.About 11 percent of cars sold in North America are red and 8 percent are blue. Green has become less popular. Benton notes that in the mid-1990s green was the most popular color1 in North America. Today, green is hard to find.Sometime in the future, people may not have to choose the color1 of their cars —— technology may let owners change their cars’ paint color1 anytime.12. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?A. Most Americans don’t like red cars.B. People in America are not allowed to wash their cars.C. Many people prefer to choose white cars in America.D. Americans may consider the cost of cleaning when choosing cars.13. Why do many people choose white cars?A. They are much cheaper than cars of other color1 s..B. They are much safer while crashing.C. They are bigger than cars of other color1 s.D. They are more comfortable inside in warmer areas.14. What do we know from the text?A. Les Jackson is a member of Axalta.B. Most Americans rarely wash their cars.C. PPG Industries mainly produces cars in China.D. Green cars were once popular in North America.15. What does the text mainly tell us?A. Choices of car color1 sB. How to buy a good car.C. Differences of car color1 s.D. Popular car color1 s in history.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

Haldane forecasted that scientific progress would destroy every belief and value. The future would be bright only "if mankind can adjust its morality to its powers".Haldane had a point:our powers have led to challenges that have never existed before, climate change is a threat unlike any we have ever seen. Our machines might become smarter than us. Genetic engineering(基因工程)could change humanity forever. In the face of such challenges, our evolved moral sense often proves not enough. Part of the problem is scale (规模).The anthropologist Robin Dunbar says we can keep no more than about 150 meaningful relationships at once. But today, all 7 billion of us are connected if not in meaningful relationships, not in meaningless ones, either. "Society" is now too big a concept for our brains to analyze. One result is conflicting demands that are hard to solve. The bad situation of our fellow humans makes us use every possible way to deal with climate change. But that could hurt our own way of life. And then there's the urge to just forget all that pressure and get on a plane to somewhere sunny. Given this cognitive(认知的)overload, our original emotional responses tend to win out. We do what feels right. But such responses don't necessarily produce the best results. So how can we make sure we do what really is right? It's a hard nut, but never fear:moral philosophers are on the case. Some, such as those based at the Centre for Effective Altruism in Oxford, UK,aim to maximize the good we can do by quantifying the results of our actions. Many of their suggestions have raised eyebrows:that it may be better to become a generous banker than work for a charity, for example.Others suggest modifying our moral brains directly, through drugs. The difficulties with this idea are obvious:who decides what makes improvement?Given the practical difficulties of large-scale morality hacking (入侵),we should perhaps stick to education. We are not simply prisoners of our emotions:we can reason our way to workable solutions. Science alone will not get us there. So no, we shouldn't take traditional morality too seriously where it fails to address modern problems.18.J.B.S.Haldane forecasted that scientific development would ______ .A. lead to the corruption of public moralsB. present a challenge to traditional moralsC. bring disasters and fears to human beingsD. affect human beings powers of adjustment19.We can learn from Paragraph 2 that ______ .A. collective wisdom is a good solution to modern challengesB. Robin Dunbar thinks it is hard to build up meaningful relationshipsC. our evolved moral sense is too limited to solve the problems of modern societyD. the large scale of social connections makes our relationships less meaningful20.What is implied in the last paragraph?______A. Most people put the blame for modern problems on science.B. Science can help with the modification of our moral brains.C. The combination of reason and humanity can make more effective morality.D. Human beings have a long way to go before they can overcome modern problems.CSomewhere in the highlands of Afghanistan, a hungry fox pounces (猛扑)on a tasty-looking leopard gecko (豹纹壁虎).But the lizard has a get-out-of-jail-free card:a separable tail. The dropped part waves in an energetic but uncontrolled way around long enough to distract the fox, allowing the gecko itself to run off and hide.Leopard geckos are one of a few lizard species that possess this ability, known as autotomy (自切).The technique is effective, but the tail can account for about a quarter of the lizard's body mass. So how do these animals adapt to losing so much of it that quickly? When geckos lose their tail, they "take this more sprawled posture (四肢伸开的姿势)" and walk with their limbs spread out farther from their body, says Chapman University biologist Kevin Jagnandan. Most researchers initially assumed this posture was a response to a suddenly shifted center of mass. But when Jagnandan observed leopard geckos with a tail in his laboratory, he realized that they wag it as they walk, suggesting that these movements may be key to the lizards' movements. To test this assumption, Jagnandan and his team assessed the postures of 10 geckos walking in various conditions:with their tail intact(完整的);with their tail restricted by a small section of glued-on fishing rod (whose mass can be neglected);and with their tail self-amputated. These comparisons allowed the researchers to distinguish the effects of lost mass from those of lost tail-wagging on the geckos' movements. The lizards with an immobilized tail adopted ways similar to those with no tail, the researchers reported in a study published in Scientific Reports. This result suggests the sprawling walk they adopt after losing their tail is not compensating for the missing mass but rather for the lack of tail-wagging. Jagnandan thinks tail movements help the lizards keep balance and stability as they walk. He suspects that the tails of mammals living in trees, such as cats and monkeys, serve a similar purpose.Bill Ryerson, a biologist at Saint Anselm College, who was not involved in the study, was surprised by the findings. "We thought we had settled it --it seemed pretty open-and-shut" that mass was the main factor, he says. The new study challenges this earlier idea in a "beautifully simple" way, Ryerson adds.Jagnandan hopes that understanding how animals react to missing body parts could ultimately help engineers design robots that can move more efficiently as heavy loads - or even entire limbs --- are added and removed.21.From the first two paragraphs we can learn that ______ .A. the fox likes to play with the gecko's tailB. the fox falls for the trick of the geckoC. moving without a tail is much tougher for the geckoD. the gecko becomes inactive when losing its tail22.Most researchers once thought geckos adopted the sprawled posture because ______ .A. the posture was key to their movementsB. their center of mass had changedC. the posture was their unique survival skillD. they imitated other mammals' behavior23.What can we know about the findings of the study?______A. They are in accordance with the expectation of Bill Ryerson.B. They were obtained after researchers compared three geckos' movements.C. They solved several mysteries concerning other mammals.D. They can be applied to the field of artificial intelligence.24.What does the passage mainly talk about?______A. Why leopard geckos prefer a habitat in the highlands.B. How leopard geckos play hide and seek games.C. How leopard geckos adapt to losing their tails.D. What role tails play in leopard geckos' life.DFor most of recorded history, the struggle to eat has been the main focus of human activity, and all but a handful of people were either farmers or farm workers. Starvation was ever-present threat. Even the best years rarely yielded much of a surplus to carry over as an insurance against leaner times. In the worst situation, none but the powerful could be sure of a full stomach. Now most people in rich countries never have to worry about where the next meal is coming from. In 1900 two in every five American workers laboured on a farm:now one in 5Q does. Even in poor places such as India, wherefamine still struck until the mid-20th century, the assumption that everyone will have something to eat is increasingly built into the rhythm of life. That assumption, though, leads to complacency(自满情结).Famine has ended in much of the world, but it still stalks parts of Africa一Ethiopia, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, to name three countries, depend on handouts of food. And millions of people still suffer from malnutrition. According to the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO),some 2 billion of the world's 7.3 billion people do not have enough to eat. Moreover, by 2050,the total population is projected to grow to almost 10 billion. Add this to the rising demand for meat, fish, milk and eggs, which is born of prosperity and which requires extra fodder to satisfy, and 70% more food will be needed in 2050 than was produced in 2009,the year the FAO did the calculation. That is a tall order. But it is not impossible. Since the time of Thomas Malthus, an economist writing a little over 200 years ago, people have worried that population growth would outstrip(超过)food supply. So far, it has not. But neo-Malthusians spot worrying signs. One is that in some places the productivity of staples(主食)such as rice and wheat has reached a plateau(停滞期).Neither new strains nor fancy agrochemicals are raising yields. Nor is there much unfarmed land left that is suitable to be brought under the plough. Neo-Malthusians also suggest that, if global temperatures continue to rise, some places will become unfarmable -particularly poor, tropical regions. These are reasonable, concerns. But they can be overcome by two things:the application and spread of technology, and the implementation of sensible government policies.Agricultural technology is changing fast. Much of this change is brought about by rich-world farmers and by rich fanners in middle-income places like Brazil. Techniques developed in the West 一especially genome-based breeding that can create crops with special properties almost to order 一are being adapted to make tropical crops. Such smart breeding, in alliance with new, precise techniques of genetic modification, should break through the yield plateaus. It can also produce crops with properties such as drought and heat-resistance that will. reduce the effects of global warming. Drought-resistant maize created in this way is already on the market. The developing world applies as little to existing farming techniques as it does to the latest advances in genetic modification. Yield plateaus are a phenomenon only of the most intensively farmed parts of the world. Extending to the smallholders and subsistence farmers of Africa and Asia the best of today's agricultural practices, in such simple matters as how much fertilizer to apply and when, would get humanity quite a long way towards a 70% increase in output.Indeed, government policy on reducing waste more generally would make a huge difference. The FAO says that about a third of food is lost during or after harvest. In rich countries a lot of food is thrown away by consumers. Inpoor ones it does not reach consumers in the first place. Bad harvesting practices, poor storage and slow transport mean that food is damaged, spoiled or lost to pests. Changing that, which is mostly a question of building things like better, pest-proof grain silos and monitoring their contents properly, would take a big bite out of the 70% increase. The neo-Malthusians may throw up their hands in despair, but consider this:despite all the apparent obstacles, from yield plateaus to climate change, in the six years following the FAO analysis cereal production rose by 11%.If growth like that continues it should not only be possible to feed the 10 billion, but to feed them well.25.According to Paragraphs 1 and 2,we can know that most people in the modern world ______ .A. usually take food for grantedB. are successfully getting rid of farmingC. tend to deal with lean years skillfullyD. enjoy equal rights to get good food26.What does the underlined sentence, in Paragraph 3 probably mean?______A. Feeding a population of almost 10 billion can be expensive.B. A precise calculation of the food growth rate is hard to make.C. Increasing the output of food by 70% in given years is very difficult.D. There is no parallel to the rising demand for high-quality food in history.27.According to the passage, neo-Malthusians ______ .A. have disproved Thomas Malthus' argumentB. have contributed to the increased output of cropsC. have found that population growth will exceed food supplyD. have claimed that climate change may influence food production28.What can we infer from the example of the develop world in Paragraph 7?______A. Technology is of little use if it is not adopted.B. Yield plateaus are common to see all over the world.C. The developing world has got used to existing farming techniques.D. More advanced agricultural practices should be introduced to the developing world.29.The underlined part "take a big bite out of" in the last but one paragraph is closest in meaning to " ______ "A. make a big profit ofB. take full advantage ofC. indicate the influence ofD. reduce a significant amount of30.What does the author think of the future of the world's food supply?______A. It is worrying.B. It is promising.C. It is controversial.D. It is uncertain.三、完形填空(本大题共20小题,共20.0分)Since the age of three, Hill had dreamed of becoming a dancer. This is the argument behind best-selling author Leonard Mlodinow'snew book, Elastic(灵活的),which examines the ever-increasing changes we find ourselves living through, and the ways of thinking best suited to them.Do we need to develop a flexible mind?Times we live in demand a flexible style of thinking. In politics, we now have to cope with more scandals in a single year than we used to encounter in a lifetime. Meanwhile, the speed and processing power of computers makes it difficult for us to navigate a landscape in which, the number of websites has been doubling every two to three years, and the way we use and access them is subject to frequent "disastrous changes".More importantly, social attitudes are changing just as fast.Logical thought is an analysis that can be described by an algorithm (算术)of the kind that computers follow.Elastic thought cannot. Logical thought is solved to help us face the everyday challenges of life while elastic thought helps us succeed when circumstances change. Elastic thought is where our new ideas come from.Logical thought can determine how to drive from our home to the grocery store most efficiently, but it's elastic thought that gave us the automobile. What makes it hard to think "flexibly"?Flexible thinking comes naturally to all humans, but one way it may be blocked is through another power exercised by our brain, the ability to tune out "crazy" ideas. A single information processor depends on an algorithm to solve a problem. The human brain, instead, acts as a set of interacting and competing systems. Theyuse our knowledge and expectations of the world to assess ideas. That approach is well suited to a stable environment. But it can be less productive when circumstances change. How can we learn to be more flexible in our own thinking? One of the abilities most important to flexible thinking is the power to relax our mind and let our guard down. If we are constantly alerted, our ideas may have a narrow range, and tend to be conventional. One can also cultivate flexible thinking by adjusting one's external conditions. Studies show that sitting in a darkened room, or closing our eyes, can widen our perspective. Low ceilings, narrow corridors, and windowless offices have the opposite effect. Being able to think without any kind of time pressure is also important when striving for novel ideas. Just as important, interruptions are deadly. A short phone call, e-mail or even a text message can redirect your attention and thoughts. As a more general exercise to nurture our mental flexibility we can try to pay special attention to one of our strongly held beliefs, take it seriously and recall times in the past that we were wrong about something, our intellectual interactions may also be helpful.五、书面表达(本大题共1小题,共25.0分)52.请认真阅读下面文字,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章.The University of Cambridge confirmed on Monday that it had been using scores from China's national college entrance examination, or gaokao, as part of its admission criteria for Chinese students for several years. It says in Weibo post, however, that it does not admit students only based on their test scores. The University statement came after some Chinese media reported over the weekend that the university would start to admit Chinese students that ranked in the top 0.1 percent in the gaokao in their province, indicating that it would try to compete for talent with top universities in China. The news immediately became one of the most viewed topics on social media, being read by 280 million users on Sina Weibo. The gaokao is increasingly accepted by universities in Australia, the United States, Canada and Europe.
