1. Cover as much as possible information related to the topic. 2. The person and the tense should be in agreement with the original story. 3. Retell in suitable tones to make your story attractive. 4. Use indirect speech instead of direct speech.

Techniques
While listening, you may: 1. Ask yourself questions on what you hear, either wh-questions or simple ones.
2. Try to note down such information as related to who, what, where, how, why, etc.

Result
Once there was an emperor who decided to choose a successor. He gave all the young people a seed and told them to come back to see him in one year with what they had grown from the seed. A boy named Ling received a seed, too. He planted the seed and watered it carefully but the seed didn’t grow. A year later, all the young men except Ling brought varieties of plants to the emperor. But to everyone’s surprise, Ling was chosen as the next new emperor because of his honesty and courage, which was just the old emperor wanted.
A young man in London was very poor. He wanted to give his girlfriend a present because her birthday was near. However, he had no idea what to buy since he had very little money. The next day he went to a shop, where he could find rings, gold watches and diamonds. Suddenly a vase drew his attention. He looked at it for quite a while before the manager noticed him. After the manager got to know everything about him, he ordered his worker to pack up the broken pieces of a vase and send it to his girlfriend on her birthday. As was told by the manager, the worker dropped the vase when he was entering the girl’s room. Everybody there was horrified. But to everybody's astonishment, the vase had already been broken before because each piece was Back to Techniques packed separately.
