Each statement contains information given in one of the paragraphs.Identify the paragraph from which the information is derived.Y ou may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter.Answer the questions by marking the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2.The Changes Facing Fast FoodA) Fast-food firms have to be a thick-skinned bunch. Health experts regularly criticize themseverely for selling food that makes people fat. Critics even complain that McDonald's, whose logo symbolizes calorie excess, should not have been allowed to sponsor the W orld Cup. The sear things fast-food firms have learnt to cope with, but not perhaps for much longer. The burger business faces more pressure from regulators at a time when it is already adapting strategies in response to shifts in the global economy.B) Fast food was once thought to be recession-proof. When consumers need to cut spending, the logic goes cheap meals like Big Macs and Whoppers become even more attractive.Such "trading down” proved true for much of the latest recession, when fast-food companies picked up customers who could no longer afford to eat at casual restaurants.Traffic was boosted in America, the home of fast food, with discounts and promotions, such as $1 menus and cheap combination meals.C) As a result, fast-food chains have weathered the recession better than their moreexpensive competitors. In 2009 sales at full-service restaurants in America fell by more than 6%, but total sales remained about the same at fast-food chains. In some markets, such as Japan, France and Britain, total spending on fast food increased. Same-store sales in America at McDonald's, the world's largest fast-food company, did not decline throughout the downturn. Panera Bread, an American fast-food chain known for its fresh ingredients, performed well, too, because it offers higher-quality food at lower prices than restaurants.D) But not all fast-food companies have been as fortunate. Many, such as Burger King, haveseen sales fall. In a severe recession, while some people trade down to fast food, many others eat at home more frequently to save money. David Palmer, an analyst at UBS, a bank, says smaller fast- food chains in America, such as Jack in the Box and Carl's Jr., have been hit particularly hard in this downturn because they are competing with theglobal giant McDonald's, which increased spending on advertising by more than 7% last year as others cut back.E) Some fast-food companies also sacrificed their own profits by trying to give customersbetter value. During the recession companies set prices low, hoping that once they had tempted customers through the door they would be persuaded to order more expensive items. But in many cases that strategy did not work. Last year Burger King franchisees (特许经营人)sued (起诉)the company over its double-cheeseburger promotion, claiming it was unfair for them to be repaired to sell these for $1 when they cost$1.10 to make. In May a judge ruled in favour of Burger King. Nevertheless, the company may still be cursing its decision to promote cheap choices over more expensive ones because items on its "value menu" now account for around 20% of all sales, up from 12% last October.F) Analysts expect the fast-food industry to grow modestly this year. But the downturn ismaking companies rethink their strategies. Many are now introducing higher-priced items to entice (引诱)consumers away from $1 specials.KFC, a division of Y um! Brands, which also owns Taco Belland Pizza Hut, has launched a chicken sandwich that costs around $5.And in May Burger King introduced barbecue (烧烤)pork ribs at $7 for eight.G) Companies are also trying to get customers to buy new and more items, including drinks.McDonald's started selling better coffee as a challenge to Starbucks. Its "Mc Cafe" line now accounts for an estimated 6% of sales in America. Starbucks has sold rights to its Seattle's Best coffee brand to Burger King, which will start selling it later this year.H) As fast-food companies shift from "super size" to "more buys", they need to keepcustomer traffic high throughout the day. Many see breakfast as a big opportunity, and not just for fatty food. McDonald's will start selling porridge (粥)in America next year.Breakfast has the potential to be very profitable, says Sara Senator of Bernstein, a research firm, because the margins can be high. Fast-food companies are also adding midday and late-night snacks, such as blended drinks and wraps. The idea is that by having a greater range of things on the menu, "we can sell to consumer’s products they want all day," says Rick Carucci., the chief financial officer of Y um Brands.I) But what about those growing waistlines? So far, fast-food firms have cleverly avoidedgovernment regulation. By providing healthy options, like salads and low-calorie sandwiches, they have at least given the impression of doing something about helping to fight obesity (肥胖症).These offerings are not necessarily loss-leaders, as they broadenthe appeal of outlets to groups of dinners that include some people who don't want to eata burger. But customers cannot be forced to order salads instead of fries.J) In the future, simply offering a healthy option may not be good enough."Every packaged-food and restaurant company I know is concerned about regulation right now,"says Mr. Palmer of UBS. America's health-reform bill, which Congress passed this year, requires restaurant chains with 20 or more outlets to put the calorie-content of items they serve on the menu. A study by the National Bureau of Economic Research, which tracked the effects on Starbucks of a similar calorie-posting law in New Y ork City in 2007, found that the average calorie-count per transaction fell 6% and revenue increased 3% at Starbucks stores where a Dunldn Donuts outlet was nearby--a sign, it is said, that menu-labelling could favour chains that have more healthy offerings.K) In order to avoid other legislation in America and elsewhere, fast-food companies will have to continue innovating (创新).W alt Riker of McDonald's claims the change it has made in its menu means it offers more healthy items than it did a few years ago."W e probably sell more vegetables, more milk, more salads, more apples than any restaurant business in the world," he says. But the recent proposal by a county in California to ban McDonald's from including toys in its high-calorie "Happy Meals", because legislators believe it attracts children to unhealthy food, suggests there is a lot more left to do.1. A newly-passed law asks big fast-food chains to specify the calorie count of what they serve on the menu.2. Fast-food firms may not be able to cope with pressures from food regulation in the near future.3. Burger King will start to sell Seattle's Best coffee to increase sales.4. Some fast-food firms provide healthy food to give the impression they are helping to tackle the obesity problem.5. During the recession, many customers turned to fast food to save money.6. Many people eat out less often to save money in times of recession.7. During the recession, Burger King's promotional strategy of offering low-priced items often proved ineffective.8. Fast-food restaurants can make a lot of money by selling breakfast.9. Many fast-food companies now expect to increase their revenue by introducing higher-priced items.10. Some people propose laws be made to stop McDonald's from attaching toys to its foodspecials for children.Section CDirections: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions orunfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A., B), C.andD ).Y ou should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on AnswerSheet 2 with a single line through the centre.Passage OneQuestions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage. If you think a high-factor sunscreen (防晒霜)keeps you safe from harmful rays, you may be wrong.Research in this week's Nature shows that while factor 50 reduces the number of melanomas(黑瘤)and delays their occurrence, it can't prevent them.Melanomas are the most aggressive skin cancers.Y ou have a higher risk if you have red or blond hair, fair skin, blue or green eyes, or sunburn easily, or if a close relative has had one.Melanomas are more common if you have periodic intense exposure to the sun.Other skin cancers are increasingly likely with long-term exposure. There is continuing debate as to how effective sunscreen is in reducing melanomas the evidence is weaker than it is for preventing other types of skin cancer.A 2011 Australian study of 1,621 people found that people randomly selected to apply sunscreen daily had half the rate of melanomas of people who used cream as needed.A second study, comparing 1,167 people with melanomas to 1,101 who didn't have the cancer, found that using sunscreen routinely, alongside other protection such as hats, long sleeves or staying in the shade, did give some protection. This study said other forms of sun protection not sunscreen seemed most beneficial. The study relied on people remembering what they had done over each decade of their lives, so it's not entirely reliable. But it seems reasonable to think sunscreen gives people a false sense of security in the sun. Many people also don't use sunscreen properly applying insufficient amounts, failing to reapply after a couple of hours and staying in the sun too long.It is sunburn that is most worrying recent research shows five episodes of sunburn in the teenage years increases the risk of all skin cancers. The good news is that a combination of sunscreen and covering up can reduce melanoma rates, as shown by Australian figures from their slip-slop-slap campaign. So if there is a heat wave this summer, it would be best for us, too, to slip on a shirt, slop on (抹上)sunscreen and slap on a hat.21. What is people's common expectation of a high-factor sunscreen?A. It will delay the occurrence of skin cancer.B. It will protect them from sunburn.C. It will keep their skin smooth and fair.D. It will work for people of any skin color.22. What does the research in Nature say about a high-factor sunscreen?A. It is ineffective in preventing melanomas.B. It is ineffective in case of intense sunlight.C. It is ineffective with long-term exposure.D. It is ineffective for people with fair skin.23. What do we learn from the 2011 Australian study of 1,621 people?A. Sunscreen should be applied alongside other protection measures.B. High-risk people benefit the most from the application of sunscreen.C. Irregular application of sunscreen does women more harm than good.D. Daily application of sunscreen helps reduce the incidence of melanomas.24. What does the author say about the second Australian study?A. It misleads people to rely on sunscreen for protection.B. Some 65% of American men aged 62 -74 with a professional degree are in the workforce, compared with32% of men with only a high-school certificate. This gap is part of a deepening divide between the well-educated well-off and the unskilled poor.Rapid technological advance has raised the incomes of the highly skilled while squeezing those of the unskilled. The consequences, for individuals and society, are profound. The world is facing an astonishing rise in the number of old people, and they will live longer than ever before.Over the next 20 years the global population of those aged 65 or more will almost double, from 600 million to 1.1 billion. The experience of the 20th century, when greater longevity (长寿)translated into more years in retirement rather than more years at work, has persuaded many observers that this shift will lead to slower economic growth, while the swelling ranks of pensioners will create government budget problems. But the notion of a sharp division between the working young and the idle old misses a new trend, the growing gap between the skilled and the unskilled.Employment rates are falling among younger unskilled people, whereas older skilled folk are working longer. The divide is most extreme in America, where well-educated baby-boomers (二战后生育高峰期出生的美国人)are putting off retirement while many less-skilled younger people have dropped out of the workforce.Policy is partly responsible. Many European governments have abandoned policies that used to encourage people to retire early.Rising life expectancy (预期寿命), combined with the replacement of generous defined-benefit pension plans with less generous defined-contribution ones, means that even the better-off must work longer to have a comfortable retirement. But the changing nature of work also plays a big role.Pay has risen sharply for the highly educated, and those people continue to reap rich rewards into old age because these days the educated elderly are more productive than the preceding generation.Technological change may well reinforce that shift: the skills that complement computers, from management know how to creativity, do not necessarily decline with age.26. What is happening in the workforce in rich countries?A. Y ounger people are replacing the elderly.B. W ell-educated people tend to work longer.C. Unemployment rates are rising year after year.D. People with no college degree do not easily find work.27. What has helped deepen the divide between the well-off and the poor?A. Longer life expectancies.B. A rapid technological advance.C. Profound changes in the workforce.D. A growing number of the well-educated.28. What do many observers predict in view of the experience of the 20th century?A. Economic growth will slow down.B. Government budgets will increase.C. More people will try to pursue higher education.D. There will be more competition in the job market.29. What is the result of policy changes in European countries?A. Unskilled workers may choose to retire early.B. More people have to receive in-service training.C. Even wealthy people must work longer to live comfortably in retirement.D. People may be able to enjoy generous defined-benefits from pension plans.30. What is characteristic of work in the 21st century?A. Computers will do more complicated work.B. More will be taken by the educated young.C. Most jobs to be done will be the creative ones.D. We know that the Romans wrote word squares and some people say that the Chinese had something like crossword games eight thousand years ago, but it is generally believed that the modern crossword game did not begin until 1913. In that year, a man called Arthur Wynne wrote a crossword game which was published in American Sunday newspaper called “New York World”.People who read the newspaper liked the crossword and so it became a regular feature of the paper. Then, in 1924, two American publishers, Simon and Schuster, decided to publish a whole book of crosswords, although they were not sure whether anyone would want to buy a copy. To incredible sales, they gave away a free pencil and a free eraser with each book. The book was a huge success and very soon crosswords became the most popular game in the USA. Arthur Wynne moved to England and, on 2 November 1924, one of his crossword games was printed in “Sunday Express”. Some people say this was the first crossword published in England but other people claim that the first appeared in “Pearson’s Magazine” in February 1922. Then, on 11 January 1925, the first Prize Crossword was printed, in “Sunday Times”. Everyone in England was doing crosswords ? even Queen Mary, the Queen of England, and her Prime Minister, Stanley Baldwin. And crosswords were believed to be the most important feature of British social life at that time. The enthusiasm for crosswords continued until this day.1. That is because the television program can now be seen in so many parts of the world. That program became one of America’s exports soon after it was shown in New York in 1969. In the United States more than six million children watch the program regularly. Although some people do not agree to some parts of the program, parents praise it highly. Many teachers find that problems appear when the children who have learned from “Sesame Street” are in the same class with those who have not watched the program. Tests have shown that children have learned much from watching “Sesame Street”. The children who watch it five times a week learn more than those who watch it less. In the United States the program is shown at different hours during the week in order to increase the number of children who can watch it regularly. The programs use songs, stories, jokes and pictures to give children a basic unde rstanding of numbers, letters and human relationships. Why has “Sesame Street” been so much more successful than other children’s shows? Many reasons have been suggested, such as the educational theories of its producers, the support from both the government and businessmen, and the full use of various kinds of television skills. Perhaps another important reason is that mothers watch “Sesame Street” together with their children. This is partly because famous film stars often appear on “Sesame Street”. But t he best reason for the success of the program may be that it makes every child watching it feel able to learn. The child finds himself learning, and he wants to learn more.6. “Sesame Street” has been called “the longest street in the world” because it is ____B_____.A. the longest street in the United StatesB. shown in many countriesC. the longest television program in the worldD. watched regularly by six million children7. In the United States more than ____A_____ children watch “Sesame Street” regularly.A. 6,000,000B. 6,500,000C. 600,000D. 700,0008. Undoubtedly, they have proved valuable, but they also have disadvantages. For example, they have increased our already large number of crimes.Hacking was the first computer crime that most of us became aware of. By using their computing expertise, hackers can gain unauthorized access to someone else's computer and make use of the data they find there. They may, for example, find lists of their competitors' clients and use these lists to build up their own businesses or they may use hacking technology to fnd out a rival company's plans. Other hacking activities may be more obviously criminal, because hackers may log on to financial data in someone else's computer and alter it illegally or use it for fraudulent(欺诈的)purposes. The possibility of serious financial fraud has been greatly increased by the modern practice of purchasing goods through the Internet. Apparently, the use of credit cards to pay for purchase has led to many people being swindled(骗取) out of a great deal of money. Banks are working hard to improve online security and to provide safeguards for customers, but frauds are working just as hard to improve their techniques of deceiving people. Many computer users worry about thoir Systems bcing alfected by computor viruses. Pcople who introduce these bugs into other people'8 compuler programs may not intentionally commit a crime but may do so as an act of mischief. The motive does not really matter to people whose data has been deleted or altered or whose files have been corrupted. Computers are part of a highly technical method of working,in which there are constantly new developments. Unfortunately, there is also a constant stream of new developments in the fraud industry associated with them. All computer users must be on their guard.41. Sending computer viruses to the publicD. Finding the lists of a competitor's clients45. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?A. Advantages of ComputersB Disadvantages of ComputersC. Computer HackinD. Computers Have Become a Must in PeoPassage 2The terms “global warming” and “climate change” are used by many, seemingly interchangeably. But do they really mean the same thing?Scientists shaped the history of the terms while attempting to accurately describe how humans continueto alter the planet. Later, political strategists adopted the terms to influence public opinion. In 1975, geochemist Wallace Broecker introduced the term “climate change” in an article published by Science. In 1979, a National Academy of Sciences report used the term “global warming” to define increases in the Earth’s average surface temperature, while “climate change” more broadly referred to the numerous effects of this increase, such as sea-level rise and ocean acidification (酸化).During the following decades, some industrialists and politicians launched a campaign to sow doubt in the minds of the American public about the ability offossil-fuel use, deforestation and other human activities to influence the planet’s climate.Word use played a critical role in developing that doubt. For example, the language and polls expert Frank Luntz wrote a memo encouraging the use of “climate change” because the phrase sounded less scary than “global warming”, reported the Guardian. However, Luntz’s recommendation wasn’t necessary. A Google Ngram Viewer chart shows that by 1993 climatechange was already more commonly used in books than global warming. By the end of the next decade both words were used more frequently, and climate change was used nearly twice as often as global warming. NASA used the term “climate change” because it more accurately reflects the wide range of changes to the planet caused by increasing amounts of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The debate isn’t new. A century ago, chemist Svante Arrhenius started one of the first debates over the potential for humans to influence the planet’s climate. Arrhenius calculated the capability of carbon dioxide to trap heat in the Earth’s atmosphere, but other chemists disagreed. Some argued that humans weren’t producing enough greenhouse gases, while others claimed the effects would be tiny. Now, of course, we know that whatever you call it, human behavior is warming the planet, with grave consequences ahead.51.Why did politicians use the two terms“ "global warming”“ and“ climate change?A) To sway public opinion of the impact of humanactivities on Earth.B) To more accurately describe the consequences ofC) To win more popular votes in their campaign activities.D) To assure the public of the safety of existing industries52. What did industrialists of the late20 Oth century resort to in order to mislead Americans?A)Made-up survey resultsB)Hired climate expertsC)False research findingsD)Deliberate choice of words54. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thought and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to present those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words. The power of words, then, lies in their associations - the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something increases.Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly and vulgar.11.The origin of language is _________.A.a legend handed down from the pastB.a matter that is hidden or secretC.a question difficult to answerD.a problem not yet solved答案:D12.What is true about words?A.They are used to express feelings only.B.They can not be written down.C.They are simply sounds.D.They are mysterious.答案:C13.The real power of words consists in their ______.A.propertiesB.characteristicsC.peculiarityD.representative function答案:D14.By “association” in the last paragraph, the author means ______.A.a special qualityB.a joining of ideas in the mindC.an appearance which is puzzlingD.a strange feature答案:B15.Which of the following statements about the real poet is NOT true?A.He is no more than a master of words.B.He can convey his ideas in words which sing like music.C.He can move men to tears.D.His style is always charming.答案:A三、词汇与语法16.The Japanese, ______ average, live much longer than the Europeans.A.withB.inC.toD.on答案:D17.Look! But none of the other planets in our solar system arecapable of supporting life at present. One possible solution to the problem, however, has recently been suggested by American scientist, Professor Carl Sagan. Sagan believes that before the earth's resources are compleetely exhausted it will be possible to change the atmophere of Venus and so create a new world almost as large as earth itself. The difficult is that Venus is much hotter than the earth and there is only a tiny amount of water there.Sagan proposes that algae organisms that can live in extremely hot or cold atmospheres and at the same time produce oxygen, should be bred in condition similar to those on Venus. As soon as this has been done, the algae will be placed in small rockets. Spaceship will then fly to Venus and fire the rockets into the atmosphere .In a fairly short time, the alge will break down the carbon dioxide into oxygen and carbon. When the algae have done theri work, the atmosphere will become cooler, but befor man can set foot on Venus it will be neccessary for the oxygen to produce rain. The surface of the planet will still be too hot for man to land on it but the rain will eventually fall and in a few years something like earth will be reproduced on Venus.1.Inte long run, the most insoluble problem caused by population growth on earth will probably be the lack of ______.A.foodB.oilC.spaceD.resources2.Carl Sagan believes that Venus might be colonized from earth because_____A.it might be possible to change its atmosphereB.its atmosphere is the same as the earth'sC.there is a good supply of water on VenusD.the days on Venus are long enough3.On Venus there is a lot of ________.A.waterB.carbon dioxideC.carbon monoxideD.oxygen4.Algae are plants that can____.A.live in very hot temperaturesB.live in very cold temperaturesC.manufacture oxygenD.all of the above5.
