Friends play an important part in our lives, and although we may take the fact of friendship for granted, we often don't clearly understand how we make friends. While we get on well with a number of people, we are usually friends with only very few- for example; the average among students is about 6per person. Moreover, a great many relationships come under the blanket ter "friendship". In all cases, two people like each other and enjoy being together, but beyond that, the degree of intimacy between them and the reasons for their mutual interest vary enormously. Initially, much depends on how people meet, and on favorable first impressions. As we get to know people, we take into account things like age, race, physical attractiveness economic and social status, and intelligence. Although these factors are not of prime importance, it is more difficult to relate to people when there is a marked difference in age and background. On a more immediate level, we are sensitive to actual behavior, facial expression, and tone of voice.Friends will stand closer together and will spend more time looking at each other than mere acquaintances. Smiles and soft voices also express friendliness, and it is because they may transmit the wrong signals that shy people often have difficulty in making friends. A friendly gaze with the wrong facial expression can turn into an aggressive stare, and nervousness may be misread as hostility. People who do not look one in the eye are mistrusted when, in fact, they simply lack confidence. Some relationships thrive on argument and discussion, but it is usual for close friends to have similar ideas and beliefs, to have attitudes and interests in common- they often talk about "being on the same wavelength". It generally takes time to reach this point; sometimes people "click" immediately. The more intimately involved people become, the more they rely on one another. People want to do friends favors and hate to let them down. Equally, friends have to learn to make allowances for each other, to put up with irritating habits, and to tolerate differences of opinion. Imagine going camping with someone you occasionally meet for a drink! In contrast with marriage, there are no friendship ceremonies, no rituals to strengthen the association between two people. But the mutual support and understanding that results from shared experiences and emotions does seem to create a powerful bond, which can overcome differences in background, and break down barriers of age, class or race.1 The average student has about six friends AA. 回答1-10题React to DifficultiesIn life you will constantly be facing challenges, times when it’s tough to feel confident about what will happen in the future. Times like these will have different degrees of intensity and duration. The greater the degree and the longer the duration, the greater the fear and sense of uncertainty will be.As many of you know, the economy seems to be in a downward spiral right now. Today alone, trillions of dollars are being wiped out in a matter of days. People’s retirement funds are being cut in double digit percentages. Many are facing job losses in a time when they need income the most. In times like these,it’s a real challenge to have any optimism and confidence that things are going to be better in the near future.I read an article where a financial expert stated if he went all in with his money today, he’ll be better off six months from today since markets will always rebound, but added he will have many restless nights and will be constantly wondering "what if this time it’s different?"It’s sometimes difficult to stay positive and motivated to work on your goals especially when all around you there are people so pessimistic about, well, everything in general. People are cutting back on everything. Conversations around the dinner table and water cooler are increasingly about the state of the economy.Ok, enough negative talk. If you notice, you have some people reacting negatively while others are acting positively. Here’s what makes the difference. You get what you focus on. You can either think about how bad you have it and feel like a victim,or you can use these challenges as a reason to step up and grow from them.Yes, things look like economy will get worse. The reality, however, really depends on how you look at it and react to this situation.Like any challenge in life it’s not what actually happens that will determine the outcome it’s what you decide to do about it.In life people are always troubled with challenges.( )A.TrueB.FalseC.Not Given2The fear and sense of uncertainty will be independent of the degree and the duration of difficult times. )a few months in advance, the Columbia University researchers say their method can predict large EL Nino events up to two years in advance. That would be good news for governments, farmers and others seeking to plan for the droughts and heavy rainfall that EL Nino can produce in various parts of the world. Using a computer, the researchers matched sea-surface temperatures to later EL Nino occurrences(发生)between 1980 and 2000 and were then able to anticipate EL Nino events dating back to 1857, using prior sea-surface temperatures. The results were reported in the latest issue of the journal Nature. The researchers say their method is not perfect, but Bryan C. Weare, a meteorologist(气象学家)at the University of California, Davis, who was not involved in the work, said, “It suggests EL Nino is indeed predictable. ““This will probably convince others to search around more for even better methods, “ said Weare. He added that the new method “makes it possible to predict EL Nino at long lead(提前的)times”. Other models also use sea-surface temperatures, but they have not looked as far back because they need other data, which is only available for recent decades, Weare said. The ability to predict the warming and cooling of the Pacific is of immense importance. The 1997 EL Nino, for example, caused an estimated $20 billion in damage world wide, offset(抵消)by beneficial effects in other areas, said David Anderson, of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts in Reading, England. The 1877 EL Nino, meanwhile, coincided(同时发生)with a failure of the Indian monsoon and a famine that killed perhaps 40 million in India and China, prompting the development of seasonal forecasting, Anderson said. When EL Nino hit in 1991 and 1997, 200 million people were affected by flooding in China alone, according to a 2002 United Nations report. While predicting smaller EL Nino events remains tricky(复杂的), the ability to predict larger ones should be increased to at least a year if the new method is confirmed. EL Nino tends to develop between April and June and reaches its peak between December and February. The warming tends to last between 9 and 12 months and occurs every two to seven years. The new forecasting method does not predict any major EL Nino events in the next two years, although a weak warming toward the end of this year is possible.1.The method used by the Columbia University researchers can predict EL Nino a few months in advance.A.真B.假C.Not Given正确答案:B解析:利用题干句中的特征词Columbia University researchers作为线索,发现相关句“…theColumbia University researchers say their method can predict large EL Nino events up to two years inadvance.”题干句说“提前几个月”,而原文说“最远能提前两年”,由此可见题干句的内容中有与原文不一致的地方,“a few months in advance”是一个从其他句子中借来的干扰信息,因此判断题干句不正确。

But when the time came to sell the cows, there were no buyers out on the range-they had to be taken into market. In the early days it was a hard job getting the cows to the markets where they were killed. It was no good killing them on the ranges because there were no lorries or railways to carry the meat. The cattle had to be driven along in a large herd to the towns where they were needed. The places with lots of people who needed meat were often hundreds or thousands of miles away from the ranges. The cattle were rounded up, and those to be sent away were kept together. On the trail the leader was the trail boss, who told the men which jobs to do. He decided where they should camp at night. Passage OneYou remember things every day, but how do you do it? You find a telephone number in the phone book, dial it and then forget it. This is your short-term memory. It lasts less than 30 seconds. However you don’t look in the phone book for your best friend’s number. You know it. This is a long-term memory. Your long-term memory has everything you remember. Why do you forget something? What is the reason? You did not learn it in the beginning. This is the major reason for forgetting. But you can remember better. Here are some ideas.1. Move information from your short-term memory to your long-term memory. Practice the information. Spend time on it.2. Be sure that you understand the information.3. Do only one thing at a time. Study in a quiet place. You can’t listen to music and memorize at the same time.4. Try to connect the new information with something you already know.5. Divide the information into parts. Do not have more than seven parts. Learn one part and stop for a few minutes. Don’t try to learn all parts at the same time.6. Make a picture in your mind. For example, when you learn the word SOFA, make a picture in your mind of this furniture. Remember what it looks like.7. The rivers which had brought down the soil were steep near the mountains, but near the coast they were wide and rolling, deep enough for the small boats of the time to sail for miles. It was far enough south for the summers to be hot, so that the growing season lasted from six month in Maryland to about nice in South Carolina. If you add these ideal farming conditions to the early discovery of a New World crop which was always in demand in the Old world, you will readily understand why the Southern Colonies became a farming group.Tobacco! This was the breath of life in Virginia, the oldest of the Southern Colonies. Men talked, thought, and bought in tobacco. It was a farming country, and other crop were also grown, but while the Southerner might have competition in the production of fruits and grains(wheat and rice and barley大麦),in tobacco he was a master. Tobacco! It was a magic word. Everything revolved around its production and it had a tremendous effect upon life in the South.59.“A New world crop” in the last sentence of the 1st paragraph most probably refers to_____A)wheat B)rice C)tobacco D)barley60. How does it happen that children learn their mother tongue so well? When we compare them with adults learning a foreign language, we often find this interesting fact. A little child without knowledge or experience often succeeds in a complete mastery of the language. A grown-up person with fully developed mental powers, in most cases, may end up with a faulty and inexact command. What accounts for this difference?

2.Adults’ knowledge and mental powers hinder(妨碍)their complete mastery of a foreign language.
Then the child has, as it were, private lessons all the year round, while an adult language student has each week a limited number of hours which he generally shaves with others. The child has another advantage: he hears the language in all possible situations, always accompanied by the right kind of gestures and facial expressions. Here there is nothing unnatural, as is often found in language lessons in schools, when one talks about ice and snow in June or scorching (炎热的) heat in January. And what a child hears is generally what immediately interests him. Again and again, when his attempts at speech are successful, his desires are understood and fulfilled. Finally, though a child’s “teachers” may not have been trained in language teaching, their relations with him are always close and personal. They take great pains to make their lessons easy.第 1 页英语(二)考前模拟题第一套

WhyIs the Native Language Learnt So Well?
Despite other explanations, the real answer in my opinion lies partly in the child himself, partly in the behavior of the people around him. In the first place, the time of learning the mother tongue is the most favorable of all, namely, the first years of life.A child hears it spoken from morning till night and, what is more important, always in its genuine (纯正的) form, with the right pronunciation, right intonation, and right use of words and right structure. He drinks in all the words and expressions which come to him in a fresh, ever bubbling spring. There is no resistance: there is perfect assimilation (同化).
