2009年4月北京地区成人本科学士学位英语统一考试A卷
2009年4月北京地区成人本科学士学位英语统一考试(A卷)PartⅠ Reading Comprehension (30%)Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:I hear many parents complain that their teenage children are rebelling. I wish it were so. At your age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning to stand on your own feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are all taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out boldly on their own, most of them are holding one another’s hands for reassurance (放心).They claim they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in music. But they all end up listening to the same record. Their reason for thinking or acting in such a way is that the crowd is doing it. They have come out of their cocoon (茧) into a larger cocoon.(76) It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and to go his or her own way. Industry has firmly carved out a market for teenagers. These days every teenager can learn from the advertisements what a teenager should have and be. This is a great barrier for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path. But the barrier is worth climbing over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don’t care to share at once with your classmates. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come — with the people who respect you for who you are. That’s the only kind of popularity that really counts.1. The author’s purpose in writing this passage is to tell ______.A. readers how to be popular with people aroundB. teenagers how to learn to make a decision for themselvesC. parents how to control and guide their childrenD. people how to understand and respect each other2. According to the author, many teenagers think they are brave enough to act on their own, but in fact most of them ______.A. have much difficulty understanding each otherB. lack confidenceC. dare not cope with any problems aloneD. are very much afraid of getting lost3. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?A. There is no popularity that really counts.B. Many parents think that their children are challenging their authority.C. It is not necessarily bad for a teenager to disagree with his or her classmates.D. Most teenagers are actually doing the same.4. The author thinks of advertisements as ______ to teenagers.A. inevitableB. influentialC. instructiveD. attractive5. The main idea of the last paragraph is that a teenager should ______.A. differ from others in as many ways as possibleB. become popular with othersC. find his real selfD. rebel against his parent and the popularity wavePassage 2Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:(77) Much unfriendly feeling towards computers has been based on the fear of widespread unemployment resulting from their introduction. Computers are often used as part of automated (自动化的) production systems requiring a least possible number of operators, causing the loss of many jobs. This has happened, for example, in many steelworks. On the other hand, computers do create jobs. They are more skilled and better paid, though fewer in number than those they replace. Many activities could not continue in their present form without computers, no matter how many people are employed. Examples are the check clearing (交换) system of major banks and the weather forecasting system. When a firm introduces computers, a few people are usually employed in key posts (such as jobs of operations managers) while other staff are re-trained as operators, programmers, and data preparation staff. (78) After the new system has settled down, people in non-computer jobs are not always replaced when they leave, resulting in a decrease in the number of employees. This decrease is sometimes balanced by a substantial increase in the activity of the firm, resulting from the introduction of computers. The attitudes of workers towards computers vary. There is fear of widespread unemployment and of the takeover of many jobs by computer-trained workers, making promotion for older workers not skilled in computers more difficult. On the other hand, many workers regard the trend toward wider use of computers inevitable. They realize that computers bring about greater efficiency and productivity, which will improve the condition of the whole economy, and lead to the creation of more jobs. This view was supported by the former British Prime Minister, James Callaghan in 1979, when he made the point that new technologies hold the key to increased productivity, which will benefit the economy in the long run.6. The unfriendly feeling towards computers is developed from ______.A. the possible widespread unemployment caused by their introductionB. their use as part of automated production systemsC. the least possible number of operatorsD. the production system in steelworks7. The underlined word “they” (line 1, Par. 2) refers to ______.A. computersB. jobsC. activitiesD. systems8. According to Paragraph 2, without computers ______.A. human activities could not continueB. there could not be weather forecasting systemsC. many activities would have to change their present formD. banks would not be able to go on with check clearing9. According to the passage, what results from the introduction of computers?A. After re-training, all employees in the firm get new jobs.B. A considerable proportion of people are employed in key posts.C. The firm keeps all of its original staff members.D. The decrease in staff members may be balanced by the increase of firm activities.10. James Callaghan’s attitude towards computers can be best described as ______.A. doubtfulB. regretfulC. unfriendlyD. supportivePassage 3Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:The vitamins necessary for a healthy body are normally supplied by a good mixed diet (饮食), including a variety of fruits and green vegetables. (79) It is only when people try to live on a very restricted diet that it is necessary to make special provision to supply the missing vitamins. An example of the dangers of a restricted diet may be seen in the disease known as “beri-beri”. (80) It used to distress large numbers of Eastern peoples who lived mainly on rice. In the early years of this century, a scientist named Eijkman was trying to discover the cause of “beri-beri”. At first he thought it was caused by a germ. He was working in a Japanese hospital, where the patients were fed on polished rice which had the outer husk (外壳) removed from the grain. It was thought this would be easier for weak and sick people to digest.Eijkman thought his germ theory was confirmed when he noticed the chickens in the hospital yard, which were fed on leftovers (剩饭) from the patients’ plates, were also showing signs of the disease. He then tried to isolate the germ, but his experiments were interrupted by a hospital official, who declared that the polished rice, even though left over by the patients, was too good for chickens. It should be recooked for the patients, and the chickens should be fed on cheap rice with the outer layer still on the grain.Eijkman noticed that the chickens began to recover on the new diet. He began to consider the possibility that e ating unpolished rice somehow prevented or cured “beri-beri”— even that a lack of some element in the husk might be the cause of the disease. Indeed this was the case. The element needed to prevent “beri-beri” was shortly afterwards isolated from rice husk s and is now known as vitamin B. Nowadays, this terrible disease is much less common thanks to our knowledge of vitamins.11. A good mixed diet ______.A. normally contains enough vitaminsB. still needs special provision of vitaminsC. is suitable for losing weightD. is composed of fruits and vegetables12. The disease “beri-beri” ______.A. kills large numbers of Eastern peoplesB. is a vitamin deficiency (缺乏) diseaseC. is caused by diseased riceD. can be caught from diseased chickens13. The chickens Eijkman noticed in the hospital yard _____.A. couldn’t digest the polished riceB. proved “beri-beri” is caused by germsC. were later cooked for the patients’ foodD. were suffering from “beri-beri”14. According to Eijkman, polished rice ______.A. was cheaper than unpolished riceB. was less nourishing (有营养的) than unpolished riceC. was more nourishing than unpolished riceD. cured “beri-beri”15. Jack was just going to turn back when he saw something moving in the smoke. He waited. Dr. Aiken studied a number of couples who had been married for at least twenty-five years. Each couple provided four photographs—one photo of each partner at the time of their marriage and another photo of each partner twenty-five or more years later. All background was cut from the photos to remove any clues. The photos were then displayed in groups: a random grouping of the persons at the time of their marriage and another random grouping of the same persons who took photographs later. Some testees were asked to pick out the partners. They failed totally with the first group. Their judgements were no better than chance. But with the photos taken twenty-five or more years after the marriage, the testees were quite successful with the most happily-married couples.Dr. Aiken believes there are several reasons why couples grow alike. One reason has something to do with imitation. One person tends to copy or do the same as someone else without knowing it. He says human begins to imitate the expressions of the faces of their loved ones. “Another possible reason,” he says, “is the common experience of the couples.” There is a tendency for people who have the same life experience to change their faces in similar ways. For example, if a couple have suffered from a lot of sad experiences, their faces are likely to change in a similar way.21. Dr. Aiken cut the background from the photos for the purpose of __________.A. imitating the couples’ lifeB. grouping the couples againC. leaving no trace for the testeesD. giving the testees more chances22. The underlined sentence “Their judgements were no better than chance” implies that the testees __________.A. did a good job in making their choices.B. had difficulty in picking out the partnersC. had no chance to make the right judgementsD. did better with the first group than with the second23. The underlined word “imitate” (in Para. 2) has a similar meaning to __________.A. copyB. changeC. knowD. suffer24. From the passage we can draw the conclusion that ___________.A. couples who look alike can live longerB. most partners have been proved to grow alikeC. the influence between partners can be quite strongD. happily-married couples are often richer than others25. The main purpose of the passage is to ___________.A. explain why couples grow alikeB. tell how couples like each otherC. discuss the function of marriageD. describe the life of happily married couplesPassage ThreeThe three biggest lies in America are: (1) “The check is in the mail”, (2) “Of course I’ll respect you in the morning”, and (3) “It was a computer error.”Of these three little white lies, the worst is the third. It’s the only one that can never be true. Today, if a bank statement cheats you out of $ 900 that way, you know what the clerk is sure to say,” It was a computer error.” Nonsense. The computer is reporting nothing more than what the clerk typed into it.The most annoying case of all is when the computerized cashier in the grocery store shows that an item costs more than it actually does. If the innocent buyer points out the mistake, the checker, bagger, and manager all come together and offer the familiar explanation: “It was a compute error.”It wasn’t, of course that computerized cashier is really nothing more than an electric event. The eye reads the Universal Product Code—chat bar of black and white lines in a corner of the package—and then checks the code against a price list stored in memory. If the price list is right, you’ll be charged accurately.Grocery stores update the price list each day—that is, somebody sits at a keyboard and types in the prices. If the price they type in is too high, there are only two explanations: carelessness or dishonesty. But somehow “a computer error” is supposed to excuse everything. One reason we let people hide behind a computer is the common misperception that huge, modern computers are electric brain with “artificial intelligence.” At some point there might be a machine with intelligence but none exists today. The smartest computer on Earth right now is no more intelligent than your average pen. At this point in the development of computers, the only thing any machine can do is what a human has instructed it to do.26. Of the three lies, the one about computer is the worst because the computer itself __________.A. says nonsenseB. cheats customersC. cannot make the errorD. does not admit its error27. According to the author, a computerized cashier is really just ___________.A. a machine to count moneyB. a machine to receive moneyC. an instrument to print codesD. an instrument to read codes28. Grocery store price lists are updated by ____________.A. a computerB. a keyboardC. an employeeD. an electric brain29. The last paragraph of the passage implies that computers ____________.A. are very cleverB. never make mistakesC. have a good memoryD. are controlled by men30. Which of the following describes the main idea of the passage?A. Computers are stupid and inefficient.B. Computer errors are due to its dishonesty.C. Computers help stores update the price list.D. Computer errors are actually human errors.Passage FourI came across an old country guidebook the other day. It listed all the tradesmen in each village, and it was impressive to see the past variety of services which were available on one’s own doorstep in the late Victorian countr yside. Nowadays a traveler in rural England might conclude that the only village tradesmen still flourishing were either selling frozen food to the villagers or selling antiques to visitors. Nevertheless, this would really be a false impression. On the surface, there has been a decline of village commerce, but its power is still remarkable. Our local grocer’s shop, for example, is actually expanding in spite of the competition from supermarkets in the nearest town. Women sensibly prefer to go there and exchange the local news while doing their shopping, instead of queuing up at a supermarket. And the grocer knows well that personal service has a considerable cash value. His prices may be a bit higher than those in the town, but he will deliver anything at any time. His assistants think nothing of bicycling down the village street in their lunch hour to take a piece of cheese to an old retired woman who sent her order by word of mouth with a friend who happened to be passing. The richer customers telephone their shopping lists and the goods are on their doorsteps within an hour. They have only to hint at a fancy for some commodity outside the usual stock and the grocer, a red faced-figure, instantly obtains it for them.31. Nowadays the commercial services in the village are ____________.A. still very activeB. quickly decliningC. unable to flourishD. personal to visitors32. The local grocer’s shop is expanding because _____________.A. the competition there is weakB. it is a place for women to chatC. it provides good personal serviceD. the goods there are more valuable33. Which of the following is true about the supermarkets?A. Prices there are much higherB. Customers often have to queue up.C. Customers can order by telephone.D. I wish it were so.At your age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning to stan d on your own feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are all taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking ou t boldly on their own, most of them are holding one another's hands for reassurance (放心).They claim they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in music. But they all end up listening to the same record. Their reason for thinking or acting in such a way is that the crowd is doing it. They have come out of th eir cocoon (茧) into a larger cocoon.(76) It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and to go his or her own way. Industry has firmly carved out a market for teenagers. These days every teenager can learn from the advertisements what a teenager should have and be. Thi s is a great barrier for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path. But the barrier is worth climbing over. The path is worth following. You may want to liste n to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don't care to share at once with your classmates. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come—with the people who respect you for who you are. That's the only kind of popularity that really counts.1. The author's purpose in writing this passage is to tell______.【答案】B第1题目问的是作者写这篇文章的目的是干什么的。

2009年11月北京成人本科学位英语统一考试真题及答案
2009年11月北京成人本科学位英语统一考试真题及答案Part I Reading Comprehension (30%)Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:The fourth-graders atChicago's McCormick Elementary School don't know Chinese is supposed to be hard to learn. For most, who speak Spanish at home, it's becoming their third language. They've been heating and using Chinese words since nursery, and it's natural to give a “ni hao”when strangers enter the classroom.“It's really fun!”says Miranda Lucas, taking a break from a lesson that includes a Chinese interview with Jackie Chan. “I'm teaching my mom to speak Chinese.”The classroom scene at McCormick is unusual, but it may soon be a common phenomenon in American schools, where Chinese is rapidly becoming the hot new language. Government officials have long wanted more focus on useful languages like Chinese, and pressure from them -- as well as from business leaders, politicians, and parents -- has produced a quick growth in the number of programs.Chicago city officials make their best effort to include Chinese in their public schools. Their program has grown to include 3,000 students in 20 schools, with more schools on a waiting list. Programs have also spread to places like Los Angeles, New York City, and North Carolina. Supporters see knowledge of the Chinese language and culture as an advantagein a global economy where China is growing in importance.“This is an interesting way to begin to engage with the world's next superpower,”says Michael Levine, director of education at the Asia Society, which has started five new public high schools that offer Chinese. “Globalization has already changed the arrangements in terms of how children today are going to think about their careers, The question is when, not whether, the schools are going to adjust.”(76) The number of students leaming Chinese is tiny compared with how many study Spanish or French. But one report shows that before-college enrollment (报名人数) nearly quadrupled between 1992 and 2002, from 6,000 to 24,000. Despite the demand, though, developing programs isn't easy. And the No. one difficulty, everyone agrees, is having enough teachers. Finding teacher “is the challenge,”says Scott McGinnis, an academic adviser for a language institute and a Chinese teacher for 15 years at the college level. “Materials are easy comparison. Or getting schools funded.”1. The best title for this passage might be_____.A. Next Hot Language to Study: ChineseB. Next Hot Language to Study: SpanishC.Next Hot Language to Study: FrenchD. Chicago Is the Place to Learn Chinese2. The most difficult thing to do is finding _____.A. enough textbooks for the Chinese programsB. enough money for the Chinese programsC. enough teachers for the Chinese programsD. enough students for the Chinese programs3. We learn from the passage that_____.A. Scott McGinnis has been a Chinese teacher for 15 yearsB. Jackie Chan is a Chinese teacher at McCormick Elementary SchoolC. Chicago officials ire required to learn ChineseD. Scott McGinnis is good at giving his opinions on everything4. According to the passage, all the following statements are true EXCEPT_____.A. the number of students learning Chinese is smallB. Chinese programs have found their way in several major Cities in the U.S.C. g0vernment officials don't like the pressure from businessleaders and parents to start Chinese programsD. China is becoming more and more influential in the world5 The word "quadrupled" in the last paragraph is close in meaning to“multiplied by_____”.A. three timesB. four timesC. five timesD. six timesPassage 2Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:Many private institutions of higher education around the country are in danger. Not ail will be saved, and perhaps not all deserve to be saved. There are low-quaiity schools just as there are low-quality businesses. We have no obligation to save them simply because .they exist. But many thriving institutions that deserve to continue are threatened. They are doing a fine job educationally, but they are caught in a financial difficulty, with no way to reduce rising costs or increase revenues (收入) significantly. Raising fees doesn't bring in more revenue, for each time fees go up, the, enrollment (注册人数) goes down, or the mount that must be given away in student aid goes up.(77) Schools are bad businesses, whether rmblic or orivate, not usually because of bad management but because of the nature of the business. They lose money on every customer, and they can go bankrupt either from too few students or too many students. Even a very good college is a very bad business. It is such colleges, thriving but threatened, that I worry about. Low enrollment is not their chief problem. Even with full enrollments, they may go under. Efforts to save them, and preferably to keep them private, are a national necessity. (78) There is no basis. for arguing that private schools are bound to be better than public schools. There are plentiful examples to the contrary. Anyone can name state universities and colleges that rank as the finest in the nation and the world. It is now inevitable that public institutions will be dominant, and therefore diversity (多样性) is a national necessity. Diversity in the way we support schools tends to give us a healthy diversity in theforms of education. In ah imperfect society such as ours, uniformity of education throughout the nation could be dangerous, ha an imperfect society, diversity is a positive good. Eager supporters of public higher education know the importance of keeping private higher education healthy.6. In the passage, the author asks the public to support_____ .A. private higher education in generalB. public higher education in generalC. high-quality private universities and collegesD. high-quality state universities and colleges7. According to the passage, schools are bad businesses because of_____.A. the nature of schoolB. poor teachersC) bad management D. too few students.8. The author thinks diversity of education is preferable to uniformity of education.C. A high-quality university is always a good business.D. Each time fees are raised, the enrollment goes up.10.In the author's opinion, the way that can save private schools lies in_____.A. full enrollmentB. raising feesC. reducing student aidD. national supportPassage 3Questions 11 to 15 are based onthe following passage:According to a recent surv, ey, employees in many companies today work longer hours than employees did in 1979. They also take shorter vacations than employees in 1979. It seems that Americans are working harder today than ever before. Or are they?A management consultant, Bill Meyer, decided to find out. For three days, he observed an investment banker hard at work. Meyer wrote down everything the banker did during his long workday. At the end of the three-day period, Meyer reviewed the banker's activities with him. What did they find out? They discovered that the man spent 80 percent of his time doing unnecessary work. For example, he attended unnecessary meetings, made redundant (多余的) telephone calls, and spent time packing and unpacking his two big briefcases.(79) Apparently many people believe that the more time a person spends at work, the more he or she accomplishes. When employers evaluate employees, they often consider the amount of time on the job in addition to job performance. Employees know this. Although many working people can do their job effectively during a regular 40-hour work week, they feel they have to spend more time on the job after normal working hours so that the people who can promote them see them.A group of headhunters (猎头) were asked their opinion about a situation. They had a choice of two candidates for an executive position with an important company. The candidates had similar qualifications for the job. For example, they were both reliable. One could do the job well in a 40-hour work week. The other would do the same job in an 80-hour work week just as well. According to a headhunting expert, the 80-hour-a-week candidate would get the job. The time this candidate spends on the job may encourage other employees to spend more time at work, too. Employers believe that if the employees stay at work later, they may actually do more work. However, the connection between time and productivity (生产率) is not always positive. (80) In fact. many studies indicate that after a certain point, anyone's productivity and creativity begin to decrease. Some employees are not willing to spend so much extra, unproductive time at the office. Once they finish their work satisfactorily, they want to relax and enjoy themselves. For these people, the solution is to find a company that encourages people to do both.11. What is the main idea of this passage?A. Many people work long hours but do not always do a lot of work.B. Most people can get more work done by working longer hours.C. Most Americans work 80 hours a week, and some work even longer.D. People can make more money by working longer hours.12. Part ⅡReading Comprehension (40 points)2009年河南专升本真题第一篇A wealthy Persian Prince loved good stories. The older he grew, the fonder he became of them. 【41】But he always regretted they had to have an end. 【42】So he decided to give half his wealth and his beautiful daughter to the man who could tell him a story without an end. Anybody who failed would be sent to 【43】prison for life. The risk was so great that nobody came to the palace to tell the Prince a story for a whole year. Then one day, a tall, handsome young man came and said he wanted to tell a story that would go on forever. The Prince agreed but warned him what would happen if he failed. “The risk is worth your fair daughter,” the young man replied poetically (得体地). He then began this well-known story:【44】“Once upon a time there was a certain King who feared famine. So he ordered his men to build an enormous storehouse, which he filled with corn. Then, when it was up, made water-proof and fire-proof, the King felt happy. 【45】But one day he noticed a small hole in the roof and as he looked at it, a locust came out with a grain of corn. A minute later, another locust came out with another grain of corn. Then a third locust with another grain of corn. Then a fourth locust, flying at great speed, pushed through the hole and came out with two grains of corn. Then a fifth locust came and...”“Stop,” shouted the Prince. “I can’t,” answered the young man. “I must go on until I tell you what happened to each grain of the corn.” “But that will go on forever.” The Prince protested. “Exactly,” the young man replied, and he smiled as he turned towards the Prince’s beautiful young daughter.41. A package can sometimes motivate someone to buy a product. For example, a small child might ask for a breakfast food that comes in a box with a picture of a TV character. The child is more interested in the picture than in the breakfast food. Pictures for children to color or cut out, games printed on a package, or small gifts inside a box also motivate many children to 【49】buy products or to ask their parents for them.【47】Some packages suggest that a buyer will get something for nothing. Food products sold in reusable containers are examples of this. 【48】Although a similar product in a plain container might cost less, people often prefer to buy the product in a reusable glass or dish, because they believe the container is free. However, the cost of the container is added to the cost of the product. The size of a package also motivates a buyer. Maybe the package h as “Economy Size” printed on it. This suggests that the large size has the most product for the least money. But that is not always true. To find out, a buyer has to know how the product is sold and the price of the basic unit. The information on the package should provide some answers. But the important thing for any buyer to remember is that a package is often an advertisement. 【50】The words and pictures do not tell the whole story.Only the product inside can do that.46. Which of the following statements could best summarize the main idea of the passage?A. Children are interested in some packages of products.B. Package is one of the important ways of advertising.C. What does the word “ them ” ( Li ne 5, Para. 1 ) refer to?A. Small gifts.B. Pictures.C. Games.D. Products.考察代词的指代关系从them 向前找被指代的内容50. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?Last paragraph 定位文章中的对应信息的位置,根据imply确定其为推理判断题,一定要结合文章的中心A. Package is just an advertisement.B. Only one name can possibly suggest itself to him: that of William Shakespeare. 【52】Every Englishman has some knowledge, however slight, of the works of our greatest writer. All of us use words, phrases and quotations from Shakespeare’s writings that have become part of the common property ofEnglish-speaking people. 【53】Most of the time we are probably unaware of the source of the words we use, rather like the old lady who was taken to see a performance of HAMLET and complained that “it was full of well-known proverbs and quotations.”Shakespeare, more perhaps than any other writer, made full use of the great resources of the English language. Most of us use about five thousand words in our normal employment of English; Shakespeare in his works used about twenty-five thousand. 【55】There is probably no better way for a foreigner to appreciate the richness and variety of the English language than by studying the various ways in which Shakespeare used it. Such a study is well worth the effort (it is not, of course, recommended to beginners) even though some aspects of English usage, and the meaning of many words, have changed since Shakespeare’s day.51. English people.A. have never discussed who is the world’s greatest poet and greatest dramatistB. never discuss about the world’s greatest poets or dramatistsC. are sure who is the world’s greatest poet and greatest dramatistD. do not care who is the world’s greatest poet and greatest dramatist52. Shakespeare’s writings have become the property of those who are learning to speak English.C. It is likely to be true that people often do not know the origin of the words they use.D. All the words people use are taken from Shakespeare’s writings.54. “HAMLET” is . (背景知识)A. a play written by ShakespeareB. a play recommended by ShakespeareC. a play appreciated by ShakespeareD. a play people have been complaining about55. It is worthwhile to study the various ways in which Shakespeare used English because.A. English words have changed a lot since Shakespeare’s timeB. by doing so one can be fully aware of the richness of English languageC. English words are now being used in the same way as inShakespeare’s daysD. English words are now the same in various ways as in Shakespeare’s days51. C52. A53. C54. A55. B2009年河南专升本真题第四篇Most cities and/or states in the U.S. collect a sales tax on almost everything you buy. You must ask when you move into a new community how much the local sales tax is, and what items are and are not taxable. Both taxable items and the amount of tax vary considerably from place to place, from one or two percent in some places up to eight or ten in others. The New York City sales tax, for example, is currently 8%, 【57】so if you buy a pair of $40 shoes you will actually have to pay $43.20. This makes paying and getting correct change much more difficult (not to mention making everything more expensive).Another thing that makes money changes more complicated is tipping. The Chinese people have happily put an end to tipping, but Westerners are still plagued(遭受折磨) with this indignity. 【58】Waiters and waitresses, cab drivers, hotel bellboys, barbers and hairdressers and all sorts of other people must be tipped. Their employers give them low wages because it is expected that you, the customer, will make up the difference. If you don’t, the service person can’t earn a living. 【60】Tipping also varies from place to place, generally in the area of 15% of your bill (before taxes), but again you should ask local residents whom to tip and how much. There is another kind of tipping as well. You are generally expected to give something (either cash or a bottle of whisky) to the mailman at Christmas time. You should discuss this also with neighbors and friends.56. The main idea of this passage is .根据每段的首句A. shopping and tippingB. sales and shoppingC. sales taxes and tippingD. sales taxes and people57. One Friday afternoon he was riding along the track towards the Henderson farm .He was looking for a prize bull which had escaped from the Borrogee paddock . He reached the hills and saw at once that he could not go further .There had been a fire in the forest which had gone out . But the air was still full of smoke and fallen trees had blocked the track . Jack was just going to turn back when he saw something moving in the smoke . He waited . It was a girl on a horse , and she was riding towards him ."There's a badly burnt man on the farm ,"the girl shouted. "He saved my life . Please help me to save him ."The girl was Cathy Henderson ,She had been on horseback for two hours . She had to jump over fallen trees that were still burning . Her pony had fallen with her twice . She was thirsty and almost dead from want of sleep . But she rode back to the farm with Jack immediately .Joe Brook was unconscious when they reached him . They lifted him on to Jack's horse . The ride back to Borrogee was terrible . Cathy was so tired that Jack had to tie her to her pony . The pony was tired too.,but its courage was astonishing .It followed Jack right to Borrogee hospital . Nobody saw them arrive because it was night ."I've never seen a horse like that pony," Jack said ,Cathy praised Jack Billabong , but she refused to say anything about the pony ."Joe will write about her in my story ," she said. But she did say one thing :"If Flame hadn't returned to the farm that afternoon, Joe and I woudl have died."16.Jack Billabong did not turn back because _____D__A.he hadn't found the bull yet .B.He smelt a heavy smoke in the forestC.He knew there was a burnt man thereD.He saw something moving towards him.17.Why was the ride back to Borrogee terrible? DA.Rescue of Joe BrookB.Courage of Jack BillabongC.Love of a Young GirlD.Heroism of a Lovely PonyPassage TwoThe faces of elderly, happily-married people sometimes resemble each other. Dr. Aiken studied a number of couples who had been married for at least twenty-five years Each couple provided four photographs--one photo of each partner at the time of their marriage and another photo of each partner twenty-five or more years later. All background was cut from the photos to remove any clues. The photos were then displayed in groups : a random grouping of the persons at the time of their marriage and another random grouping of the same persons who took photographs later . Some testees were asked to pick out the partners . They failed totally with the first group . Their judgments were on better than chance . But with the photos taken twenty-five or more years after the marriage , the testees were quite successful in deciding who was married to whom . They were particularly successful with the most happily-married couples .Dr.Aiken believes there are several reasons why couples grow alike. One reason has something to do with imitation . One person tends to copy or do the same as someone else without knowing it . He says human begins to imitate the expressions of the faces of their loved ones . Another possible reason , he says , is the common experience of the couples . There is a tendency for people who have the same life experience to change their faces in similar ways . For example , if a couple have suffered from a lot of sad experiences , their faces are likely to change in a similar way.21.Dr.Aiken cut the background from the photos for the purpose of _____C______________A.imitating the couples lifeB.Grouping the couples againC.Leaving no trace for the testeesD.Giving the testees more chances22.The underlined sentence Their judgments were no better than chance implies that the testees___B___A.did a good job in making their choicesB.Had difficulty in picking out the partnersC.Had no chance to make the right judgmentsD.Did better with the first group than with the second23.the underlied word imitate (in para . 2) has a similar meaning to "______A_____A.copyB.changeC.knowD.suffer24.From the passage we can draw the conclusion that____B____A.couples who look alike can live lingerB.Most partners have been proved to grow alikeC.The influence between partners can be quite strongD.Happily-married couples are often richer than others25.The main purpose of the passage is to ____A___A.explain why couples grow alikeB.Tell how couples like each otherG..Discuss the function of marriage D.Describe the life of happily-married couples Passage ThreeThe three biggest lies in America are:(1) "The check is in the mail ", (2) "Of course I'll respect you in the moring", and (3) "It was a computer error."Of these three little white lies ,the worst is the third . It's the only one that can never be true . Today , if a bank statement cheats you out of $900 that way ,you know what the clerk is sure to say:" It was a compute error ." Nonsense. The computer is reporting nothing more than what the clerk typed into it .The most annoying case of all is when the computerized cashier in the grocery store shows that an item costs more than it actually does . If the innocent buyer points out the mistake , the checker , bagger, and manager all come together and offer the familiar explanation :"It was a computer error."It wasn't, of course . That computerized cashier is really nothing more than an electric eye . The eye reads the Universal Product Code--that bar of black and white lines in a corner of the package--and then checks the code against a price list stored in memory . If the price list is right , you'll be charged accurately.Grocery stores update the price list each day----that is , somebody sits at a keyboard and types in the prices . If the price they type in is too high , there are only two explanations: carelessness or dishonesty . But somehow " a computer error " is supposed to excuseeverything .One reason we let people hide behind a computer is the common misperception that huge , modern computers are "electric brains " with "artificial intelligence ". At some point there might be a machine with intelligence , but none exists today . The smartest computer on Earth right now is no more "intelligent"than your average pen . At this point in the development of computers ,the only thing any machine can do is what a human has instructed it to do .26.Of the three lies ,the one about computer is the worst because the computer itself ___C_A.says nonsenseB.Cheats customersC.Cannot make the errorD.Does not admit its error27.According to the author , a computerized cashier is really just _____D_A.a machine to count moB. machine to receive moneyC.An instrument to print codesD.An instrument to read codes28.Grocery store price lists are updated by ________C_____________A.a computerB.a keyboardC.an employeeD.an electric brain29.The last paragraph of the passage implies that computers____D______A.are very cleverB.never make mistakesC.have a good memoryD.are controlled by men30.Which of the following describes the main idea of the passage? Dputers are stupid and inefficientputer errors are due to its dishonestyputers help stores update the price listputer errors are actually human errorsPassage FourI came across an old country guidebook the other day . It listed all the tradesmen in each village ,and it was impressive to see the great variety of services which were available on one's own doorstep in the late Victorian countryside .Nowadays a traveller in rural England might conclude that the only village tradesmen still flourishing were either selling frozen food to the villagers or selling antiques to visitors . Nevertheless , this would really be a false impression . On the surface , there has been a decline of village commerce , but its power is still remarkable .Our local grocer's shop ,for example , is actually expanding in spite of the competitinon from supermarkets in the nearest town . Women sensibly prefer to go there and exchange the local news while doning their shopping instead of queuing up at a supermarket . And the grocer knows well that personal service has a considerable cash value .His prices may be a bit higher than those in the town ,but he will deliver anything at any time . His assistants think nothing of bicycling down the village street in their lunch hour to take a piece of cheese to an old retired woman who sent her order by word of mouth with a friend who happened to be passing . The richer customers telephone their shopping lists and the goods are on their doorsteps within an hour . They have only to hint at a fancy for some commodity outside the usual stock and the grocer , a red faced figure , instantly obtains if for them.31.Nowadays the commercial services in the village are ____A__A.still very activeB.quickly decliningC.unable to flourishD.personal to visitors32.The local grocer's shop is expanding because____C___A.the competition there is weakB.It is a place for women to chatC.It provides good personal serviceD.The goods there are more valuable33.Which of the following is true about the supermarkets ? DA.They don't think it a troubleB.They don't think it worthwhileC.They don't consider it a good dealD.They don't consider it a pleasant experience35.One special feature of the village shop is that ____D___A.there is a very wide range of goods availableB.Customers can order goods by word of mouthC.Customers have to order goods one hour earlierD.There is a list of goods to be delivered to doorstepsPart III Vocabulary and Structure (20 points)Directions : There are 40 incomplete sentences in this part .
