Whenever you come upon an unfamiliar word, first check to see if it has a recognizable root. If you know that the Latin root "ami" for example, means like or love, you can easily figure out that "amiable" means pleasant, friendly and "amorous" means loving. Even ff you cannot define a word exactly, recognizing the root will still give you a general idea of the word's meaning. Remembering thatthe Greek root "geo" means earth would certainly help you define "geophysics" as the physics of the earth, but it also might help you figure out that "geocentric" has to do with the center of the earth or with the earth as a center. Begin by studying the following lists of common Latin and Greek roots and representative words. The word "geochemistry" most probably means the chemistry of ______. However, fish do have ears inside their bodies, near the brain, and they hear very well with them. Some fish have been taught to recognize the difference between sounds better than some human beings do.Many underwater animals make noises only by chance while they are doing something else. Other sounds are real munications of simple sort, telling one fish of the presence and direction of another. A few noises may be warning messages or discovery of food, etc. The earliest scientific report on fish sounds referred to one of these.A new field in science is learning to recognize and use underwater sounds. It depends on the same skill that man has shown in recognizing birds and other land creatures by their calls. But this method is a greater challenge than bird watching, for many of the animals of the sea cannot befollowed in any other known way. Their voices cry for attention. Yet we still have too little knowledge about many of the call makers. Perhaps people will get to know more fully the meaning of the calls and what the call makers are. It seems that the great oceans are for daring man to explore the secrets of the place from which his forefathers<祖先> came so long ago.61. It was hard for people to get the things they needed. They couldn’t just go to a store. First they had to find someone who had what they wanted. Then they had to give that person something he or she wanted. That’s how goods were traded.Trading means giving something to get something else. One farmer might have many apples, but no milk. Another farmer might have a lot of milk, but no apples. The first farmer gives the other farmer some apples. The other farmer gives the first farmer some milk for the apples. Then both are glad.Trading goods was hard work. It took a lot of time. Soon someone thought of using money instead of goods. In the old days money could be anything. People have used shells, littlerocks, gold, and silver as money.Later, coins were used as money. The first coins were made of gold and silver. Now they are made out of many different metals. Money today is also made out of something that can be folded. It’s made out of paper. Today most of our money is bills. Most people do some kind of work to get money. With that money, they can buy the things they want and need. This could be food, a car, or a trip. They can also save some. They would do this by putting it in a bank. Then they would have it later on to pay for things like their children’s schooling. In the large enterprise you have established ―policies,‖ ―channels‖ of organization, and fairly rigid(严格的)procedure. In the small enterprise you have moreover, immediate effectiveness in a very small area. You can see the effect of you work and of your decisions right away, once you are a little bit above the ground floor .In the large enterprise, even the man at the top is only a cog in a big machine. To be sure, his actions affect a much greater organization, but his effectiveness is remote and indirect. In a small and even in a middle-size business, you are normally exposed to all kinds of experiences and expected to do a great many things without too much help or guidance. In the large organization you are normally taught one thing thoroughly. There was no in-between. They understood that integrity(正直;诚实)means having a personal standard of morality and that is not relative to the situation at hand. Integrity is an inner standard for judging your behavior. Unfortunately , integrity is in short supply today—and getting scarcer.A good test for this value is to look at the three key principles: Stand firmly for your belief in the face of personal pressure. Always give others credit that is rightfully theirs.David Ogilvy, founder of the advertising firm Ogilvy & Mather ,made this point clear to his newly appointed office heads by sending each a set of dolls with five progressively smaller figures inside. His message was contained in the smallest doll: ―If each of us hires people who are smaller than we are ,we shall become a company of dwarfs. But if each of us hires people who are bigger than we are ,we will become a company of giants.Be honest and open about who you really are. People who lack real core values rely on external factors—their looks social positions-in order to feel good about themselves. Inevitably they will do everything they can to preserve this mask. but they will do very little to develop their inner value and personal growth.Integrity means you do what do because it’s right and not just fashionable.(239)Questions 61—65 are based on the passage you have just read.61 The author’s grandparents believed on was .A between honest and dishonestB neither honest nor dishonestC both honest and dishonestD either honest or dishonest62 The author’s grandparents held that integrity was .A a personal and external standardB a general and internal standardC a personal and inner standardD a general and external standard63 Nowadays people of integrity are found .A more and moreB fewer and fewerC mostD fewest64 According to the last two paragraphs people who have real core values rely on .A their looksB their maskC their inner value and personal growthD their company of giants and dwarfs65 To be man of integrity ,you must do what is .A profitableB fashionableC firmD rightPassage FourPeople used to dream of flying like birds.
