He was going to wish he had a brother like that. But what the lad said jarred Paul all the way down to his heels.“I wish,” the boy went on, “that I could be a brother like that.”Paul loo ked at the boy in astonishment, then impulsively he added, “Would you like to take a ride in my automobile”“Oh yes, I’d love that.”After a short ride, the boy turned and with his eyes aglow, said, “Mister, would you mind driving in front of my house”Paul smiled a little. But you can slow your rate of wrinkling by eating the right foods to keep the fat layers under your skin sufficiently plump to maintain a smooth complexion. For example, while one baked sweet potato, eight ounces of orange juice or ten potato chips provide about 100 calories, only the sweet potato and orange juice supply quality calories. The sweet potato is rich in vitamin A, which helps skin cells shed smoothly, and the juice provides vitamin C, which helps form collagen, the supportive substance that gives youthful skin its elastic quality. Good sources of vitamin A include dark-green, orange and deep-yellow vegetables, and orange-colored fruits. Citrus fruits are a good source of vitamin C.Drink plenty of water. Once you’re past your 20s, many of your skin’s natural moisturizers—sweat and oil glands—shut down, and the top layer of skin thins out. As a result, skin no longer holds moisture well. Also, if you don’t drink enough water to replace what you lose every day through urination and perspiration, your body pulls what it needs from your cells, including skin cells, resulting in drier, older-looking skin.To minimize dryness, drink at least eight to ten eight-ounce glasses of water a day. Don’t count drinks such as coffee, tea and cola as part of your daily intake. They contain caffeine, a diuretic that may increase water loss from the skin, as will alcohol.Another symptom of aging you can offset with diet is lowered resistance to illness. However, vitamin E may strengthen the immune system. In an American study, researcher Simin Meydani gave 32 healthy adults over age 60 large doses of vitamin E twice a day for a month. As a result, their lymphocyte function was significantly improved. Foods rich in vitamin E include dark-green, leafy vegetables, legumes, nuts and whole-grain cereals.Food is not a quick fix for aging. But a sound diet—plenty of fiber, water and vitamin-rich, deep-colored fruits and vegetables—is bound to have a positive effect on your overall health and looks.56. To maintain a smooth complexion, you should C .A. slow your rate of wrinklingB. keep a certain fat layer under your skinC. eat some proper foodsD. drink plenty of coffee57. Good sources of Vitamin A comes from A .A. sweet potatoB. orange juiceC. citrus fruitD. tea58. If you don’t drink enough water C .A. sweat and oil glands will shut downB. top layer of skin will thin outC. drier, older-looking skin will appearD. skin no longer holds moisture59. To minimize dryness, the best choice of your daily intake is A .A. waterB. coffee and teaC. colaD. wine60. Proper intake of Vitamin E may B .A. lower resistance to illnessB. improve the immune systemC. increase water loss from the skinD. make a good dietIV. It has four huge propellers made of an expensive metal. Today each of those propellers is worth $300;000 or more. The ship; lying on the sea-bed has been bought by a man called John Light. today.During the first few decacdes of the twentieth century, canned and convenience foods freed the family cook from full-time duty at the kitchen range. Then,in the 1940s,work in the wartime defense plants took more women out of the home than ever before, setting the pattern of the working wife and mother.Today about half of the country's married women are employed outside the home. But,unless family members pitch in with food preparation, women are not fully liberated from that chore.Instead many have become,in a sense, prisoners of the completely cooked convenience meal.It is easier to pick up a bucket of fried chicken on the way home from work or to take the family out for pizzas,or burgers than to start opening cans or heating up frozen dinners after a long, hard day. Also, the rising divorce rate means that there are more single working parents with children to feed. And many young adults and elderly people,as well as unmarried and divorced mature people, live alone rather than as part of a family unit and don't want to bother cooking for one.Fast food is appealing because it is fast,it doesn't require any dressing up,and it offers a"fun"break.21、American women left home to The book Writing Without Teachers introduced me to one distinction(区别)and one practice that has helped my writing processes tremendously. The distinction is between the creative mind and the critical mind. While you need to employ both to get to a finished result, they cannot work in parallel no matter how much we might like to think so.Trying to criticize writing on the fly is possibly the single greatest barrier to writing that most of us encounter. If you are listening to that 5th grade English teacher correct your grammar while you are trying tocapture a fleeting (稍纵即逝的) thought, the thought will die. If you capture the fleeting thought and simply share it with the world in raw form, no one is likely to understand. You must learn to create first and then criticize if you want to make writing the tool for thinking that it is.The practice that can help you past your learned bad habits of trying to edit as you write is what Elbow calls “free writing.” In free writing, the objective is to get words down on paper non-stop, usually for 15-20 minutes. No stopping, no going back, no criticizing. The goal is to get the words flowing. As the words begin to flow, the ideas will come from the shadows and let themselves be captured on your notepad or your screen. Now you have raw materials that you can begin to work with using the critical mind that you’ve persuaded to sit on the side and watch quietly. Most likely, you will believe that this will take more time than you actually have and you will end up staring blankly at the pages as the deadline draws near.Instead of staring at a blank start filling it with words no matter how bad. Halfway through your available time, stop and rework your raw writing into something closer to finished product. Move back and forth until you run out of time and the final result will most likely be far better than your current practices.1 When the author says the creative mind and the critical mind “cannot work in parallel” in the writing process, he means . A.one cannot use them at the same time B.they cannot be regarded as equally important C.they are in constant conflict with each other D.no one can be both creative and critical2 What prevents people from writing onis . A.putting their ideas in raw form B.ignoring grammatical soundness C.attempting to edit as they write D.trying tocapture fleeting thoughts 3 What is the chief objective of the first stage of writing?A.To organize one’s thoughts logically. B.To get one’s ideas down. C.To choose an appropriate topic. D.To collect raw materials.4 One common concern of writers about “free writing” isthat . A.it overstresses the role of the creative mind B.it does not help them to think clearly C.it may bring about too much criticism D.it takes too much time to edit afterwards 5 In what way does the critical mind help the writer in the writing process?A.It allows him to sit on the side and observe. B.It helps him to come up with new ideas. C.It saves the writing time available to him. D.It improves his writing into better shape.第二篇 2002年1月六级\world's environment is surprisingly healthy. Discuss.\If that were an examination topic, most students would tear it apart, offering a long list of complaints: from local smog ( 烟雾 )to global climate change, from the felling ( 砍伐 ) of forests to the extinction of species. The list would largely be accurate, the concern legitimate. Yet the students who should be given the highest marks would actually be those who agreed with the statement. The surprise is how good things are, not how bad. After all, the world's population has more than tripled during this century, and world output has risen hugely, so you would expect the earth itself to have been affected. Indeed, if people lived, consumed and produced things in the same way as they did in 1900 (or 1950, or indeed 1980), the world by now would be a pretty disgusting place: smelly, dirty, toxic and dangerous. But they don't. The reasons why they don't, and why the environment has not been mined, have to do with prices, technological innovation, social change and government regulation in re-sponse to popular pressure. That is why, today's environmental problems in the poor countries ought, in principle, to be solvable.Raw materials have not run out, and show no sign of doing so. Logically, one day they must: the planet is a finite place. Yet it is also very big, and man is very ingenious. What has happened is that every time a material seems to be running short, the price has risen and, in response, people have looked for new sources of supply, tried to find ways to use less of the material, or looked for a new substitute. For this reason prices for energy and for minerals have fallen in real temp3s during the century. The same is true for food. Prices fluctuate, in response to harvests, natural disasters and political instability; and when they rise, it takes some time before new sources of supply become available. But they always do, assisted by new famp3ing and crop technology. The long temp3 trend has been downwards. It is where prices and markets do not operate properly that this benign ( 良性的 ) trend begins to stumble, and the genuine problems arise. Markets cannot always keep the environment healthy. If no one owns the resource concerned, no one has an interest in conserving it or fostering it: fish is the best example of this.1. On the contrary, it helps farmers and improves forest soils. This is the unorthodox view of a German soil scientist who has shown that burnt clearings in the Amazon, dating back more than 1,000 years, helped creates patches of rich, fertile soil that farmers still benefit from today. Most rainforest soils are thin and poor because they lack minerals and because the heat and heavy rainfall destroy most organic matter in the soils within four years of it reaching the forest floor. This means topsoil contains few of the ingredients needed for long-term successful farming. But Bruno Glaser, a soil scientist of the University of Bayreuth, has studied unexpected patches of fertile soils in the central Amazon. These soils contain lots of organic matter.Glaser has shown that most of this fertile organic matter comes from “ black carbon” --- the organic particles from camp fires and charred (烧成炭的) wood left over from thousands of years of slash-and-burnfarming. “ The soils, known as Terra Preta, contained up to 70 times more black carbon than the surrounding soils,” says Glaser.Unburnt vegetation rots quickly, but black carbon persists in the soil for many centuries. Radiocarbon dating shows that the charred wood in Terra Preta soils is typically more than 1,000 years old.“Slash-and-burn farming can be good for soils provided it doesn’t completely burn all the vegetation, and leaves behind charred wood,”says Glaser. “It can be better than manure (粪肥).” Burning the forest just once can leave behind enough black carbon to keep the soil fertile for thousands of years. And rainforests easily regrow after small-scale clearing. Contrary to the conventional view that human activities damage the environment, Glaser says: “ Black carbon combines with human wastes is responsible for the richness of Terra Preta soils.”Terra Preta soils turn up in large patches all over the Amazon, where they are highly prized by farmers. All the patches fall within 500 square kilometers in the central Amazon. Glaser says the widespread presence of pottery (陶器) confirms the soil’s human origins. The findings add weight to the theory that large areas of the Amazon have recovered so well from past periods of agricultural use that the regrowth has been mistaken by generations of biologists for “virgin”forest.During the past decade, researchers have discovered hundreds of large earth works deep in the jungle. They are up to 20 meters high and cover up to a square kilometer. Glaser claims that these earth works, built between AD 400 and 1400, were at the heart of urban civilizations managed to feed themselves.1. We learn from the passage that the traditional view of slash-and-burn farming is that _______. A) it does no harm to the topsoil of the rainforest B) it destroys rainforest soils C) it helps improve rainforest soilsD) it diminishes the organic matter in rainforest soils 2. Most rainforest soils are thin and poor because _________. A) the composition of the topsoil is rather unstable B) black carbon is washed away by heavy rainsC) organic matter is quickly lost due to heat and rainD) long-term farming has exhausted the ingredients essential to plant growth 3. Glaser made his discovery by __________.A) studying patches of fertile soils in the central Amazon B) examining pottery left over by ancient civilizations C) test-burning patches of trees in the central Amazon D) radiocarbon-dating ingredients contained in forest soils 4. What does Glaser say about the regrowth of rainforest?A) They take centuries to regrow after being burnt.B) They cannot recover unless the vegetation is burnt completely. C) Their regrowth will be hampered by human habitation. D) They can recover easily after slash-and-burn farming 5. From the passage it can be inferred that __________. A) human activities will do grave damage to rainforestsB) Amazon rainforest soils used to be the richest in the worldC) farming is responsible for the destruction of the Amazon rainforestsD) there once existed an urban civilization in the Amazon rainforests 第四篇 2006年12月六级In a purely biological sense, fear begins with the body's system for reacting to things that can harm us- the so-called fight-or-flight response. \stay alive,\processing information about potential threats. At its core is a cluster of neurons(神经元) deep in the brain known as the amygdala (扁桃核).LeDoux studies the way animals and humans respond to threats to understand how we form memories of significant events in our lives. The amygdala receives input from many parts of the brain, including regions responsible for retrieving memories. Using this information, the amygdalaappraised a situation- I think this charging dog wants to bite me-and triggers a response by radiating nerve signals throughout the body. These signals produce the familiar signs of distress: trembling, perspiration and fast-moving feet, just to name three. This fear mechanism is critical to the survival of all animals, but no one can say for sure whether beasts other than humans know they're afraid. That is, as LeDoux says, \system into a brain that has consciousness, then you get the feeling of fear.\Humans, says Edward M. Hallowell, have the ability to call up images of bad things that happened in the past and to anticipate future events. Combine these higher thought processes with our hardwireddanger-detection systems, and you get a near-universal human phenomenon: worry.。

山东大学英语系语言学答案

山东大学英语系语言学答案

1.What is the nature of language? The nature of language is the nature of human thought and human action, for language is neither more nor less than the tool of both of these aspects of human nature. A word is either the shadow of an act or of an idea. Verbal sounds have no meaning in themselves. They are the channels, the media for the expression or communication of that which lies outside of them. Plato has made clear to us how easy it is to deceive ourselves with words, to labor under an impression that just because we can utter a sound we also necessarily know what we are talking about.A language is defined as "a systematic means of communicating ideas or feelings by the use of conventionalized signs, sounds gestures or marks having understood meanings.", and "is a tool for communication". In most common use of language, these signs are the words which we employ in such a way that they may communicate ideas or feelings. Communication, that is, the conveyance of an idea or emotion from one to another, relies largely upon language, and rightly so, as it is a powerful tool when employed correctly. However, misunderstandings in communication occur when two people have a different understanding of their language, or they use language in sucha way that it results in communication which is unclear or vague.2.What are the differences between traditional grammar and modernlinguistics?Traditional grammar is prescriptive; it is based on "high "(religious, literary) written language. It sets grammatical rules and imposes the rules on language users. But Modern linguistics is descriptive; it collects authentic and mainly spoken language data and then it studies and describes the data in an objective and scientific way.Modern linguistic is DESCRIPTIVE (to describe the way people speak), whilst traditional grammar is PRESCRIPTIVE (to prescribe the way people speak, or simply, to tell people how to speak and let people know the correct way of their speaking) Traditional Grammar is a framework used to describe the structural pattern and rules in a language called syntax functions. A language is a composite form of vocal articulation and written form using the sets of rules of that vocalization or writtenstructure of communication in any native language.Tradition grammar pays more attention to the written form of language, while linguistics attaches more importance to speaking than writing. Traditional grammar has been restricted mainly to SYNTAX, that is, the way of words making patterns to form sentences, while linguistics has a boarder scope for researching, e.g. pragmatics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, est. which, accordingly, are out of the scope of traditional grammar.3.How can the speech sounds of the English language be classified? An initial classification will divide the speech sound into two broad categories: vowels and consonants.Vowels may be distinguished as front, central, and back according to which part of the tongue is held highest. To further distinguish members of each group, we need to apply another criterion, the .openness of the mouth. Accordingly, we classify the vowels into four groups: close vowels, semi-close vowels, semi-open vowels and open vowels. A third criterion that is often used in classification of vowels is the shape of the lips. In English, all the front vowels and central vowels are rounded vowels, and all the back vowels are rounded. In English, there are five letters which always represent a vowel when written: a, e, i, o, and u. these five letters represent more than five vowel sounds, however, depending on the word, or if they are combined with other vowels. Compare the letter a in the words hat and hate as one of many examples. In terms of manner of articulation the English consonants can be classified into the following types: stops, fricatives, affricates, liquids, nasals, glides, bilabial, labiodental, dental, alveolar, palatal, velar, glottal.A consonant is a sound in spoken language that is characterized by a constriction or closure at one or more points along the vocal tract. The word consonant comes from Latin meaning "sounding with" or "sounding together", the idea being that consonants don't sound on their own, but only occur with a nearby vowel; this conception ofconsonants, however, does not reflect a modern linguistic understanding, which defines them in terms of vocal tract constrictions. There are a group of consonants called sonorant that sometimes act as vowels, occupying the peak of a syllable, and sometimes act as consonants. For example, in English, the sound [m] in "mud" is a consonant, but in "prism", it occupies an entire syllable, as a vowel would.4.What contributions did Saussure make to the development of modernlinguistics?Saussure was a noted linguist whose theories on the structure of language had a profound effect on modern linguistics and Literary Theory. His system was based on the concepts of the signifier (sound image or graphic), the referent (object or real thing) and the signified (concept or meaning). He posited that the connection between the signifier and the signified was an arbitrary one based on conventions of politeness. Another key to his theories is the idea of difference: he believed that signification was a function of difference.Saussure is known as the "Father of Modern Linguistics" Because of his work with Indo-European languages. In Paris and in Geneva, between 1881 and 1891, he studied Sanskrit, comparative languages and linguistics. Three years after his death, his students published his notes on the structure of language which had a profound influence on modern linguistics and Semiology. Its central notion is that language may be analyzed as a formal system of di fferential elements, apart from the messy dialectics of real-time production and comprehension. Examples of these elements include the notion of the linguistic sign, the signifier, the signified, and the referent.5.What is phoneme? How can you determine whether a sound is a phoneme?A phoneme is a member of the set of the smallest units of speech that serve to distinguish one utterance from another in a language or dialect. It’s is a set of similar sounds which contrasts with other such sets to differentiate words.A “phoneme” is a phonological unit;it is a unit that is of distinctive value. As an abstract unit, a phoneme is not any particular sound, but rather it is represented or realized by a certain phone in a certain phonetic context. For example, the phoneme[p] is represented differently in [pit], [tip] and [spit].In a language or dialect, a phoneme is the smallest segmental unit of sound employed to form meaningful contrasts between utterances. Thus a phoneme is a group of slightly different sounds which are all perceived to have the same function by speakers of the language or dialect in question. An example of a phoneme is the /k/ sound in the words kit and skill. (In transcription, phonemes are placed between slashes, as here.) Even though most native speakers don't notice this, in most dialects, the k sounds in each of these words are actually pronounced differently. The reason why these different sounds are nonetheless considered to belong to the same phoneme in English is that if an English-speaker used one instead of the other, the meaning of the word would not change.6.How can you define meaning?Meaning is central study of communication. In linguistics, meaning is what is expressed by the writer or speaker, and what is conveyed to the reader or listener. Meaning is inferred from objects or concepts expressed by words, phrases or sentences in semantics. Meaning is inferred from the current context as intended by the writer or speaker in pragmatics. Ambiguity in meaning may cause confusion in what is conveyed, and lead to different interpretations of the current context.Pragmatics studies the ways that context affects meaning. The two primary forms of context important to pragmatics are linguistic context and situational context. Pragmatics, then, reveals that meaning is both something affected by and affecting the world. Meaning is something contextual with respect to language and the world, and is also something active toward other meanings and the world.Semantics is the study of meaning as conveyed through signs and language. Semantics can refer to the literal or intended meaning of speakers and writers. Semantics is studied in many branches of science and consequently how meaning is studied may vary. Understanding how facial expressions, body language, and tone affects meaning, and how words, phrases, sentences, and punctuation relate to meaning are two examples of what Semanticists study.7.How can you distinguish conceptual meaning and associative meaning?Conceptual meaning (also known as denotative meaning) is the meaning given in the dictionary and forms the core of word meaning. Being constant and relatively stable, conceptual meaning forms the basis for communication as the same word has the same conceptual meaning to all the speakers of the same language. Take 'The sun rises in the east' for example. The word sun here means 'a heavenly body which gives off light, heat, and energy', a concept which is understood by anyone who speaks English.Associative meaning of an expression has to do with individual mental understandings of the speaker. They, in turn, can be broken up into six sub-types: connotative, collective, social, affective, reflected and thematic The connotative meanings of an expression are the thoughts provoked by a term when in reference to certain entities. Though these meanings may not be strictly implied by relevant definitions, they show up in common or preferred usage regardless. This is not to be confused with what is historically referred to as connotation, which more closely describes rigid definitions of words. Collocative meaning, or "collocation", describes words that regularly appear together in common use (within certain contexts).Social meaning, where words are used to establish relationships between people and to delineate social roles. For example, in Japanese, the suffix "-san" when added to a proper name denotes respect, sometimes indicating that the speaker is subordinate to the listener; while the suffix "-chan" denotes that the speaker thinks the listener is a child or childlike (either for purposes of affection or derision).Affective meaning has to do with the personal feelings or attitudes of the speaker. Reflected meaning has to do with when one sense of a particular wordaffects the understanding and usage of all the other senses of the word. Thematic meaning concerns itself with how the order of words spoken affects the meaning that is entailed. An initial classification will divide the speech sound into two broad categories: vowels and consonats8.Will you please distinguish the following terms: entailment, presupposition, and implicature?.Entailment, as used by philosophers, is a term of art that, unlike logical consequence, lacks a precise definition that is consistently adhered to by those who employ it. Throughout much of the twentieth century, especially its early and middle years, many philosophers connected entailment with analyticity, requiring the material conditional ┌A ⊃ B┐ to be analytic when A entailed B. In later years, as conceptions of analyticity became less expansive, and philosophical uses of it more restricted, the presumption that entailment was to be understood in terms of analyticity waned. However, the relationship between entailment and necessity has remained robust.A presupposition must be mutually known or assumed by the speaker and addressee for the utterance to be considered appropriate in context. It will generally remain a necessary assumption whether the utterance is placed in the form of an assertion, denial, or question, and can be associated with a specific lexical item or grammatical feature (presupposition trigger) in the utterance.Crucially, negation of an expression does not change its presuppositions: I want to do it again and I don't want to do it again both presuppose that the subject has done it already one or more times; My wife is pregnant and My wife is not pregnant both presuppose that the subject has a wife. In this respect, presupposition is distinguished from entailment and implicature. For example, The president was assassinated entails that The president is dead, but if the expression is negated, the entailment is not necessarily true.Implicature is a technical term in the pragmatics subfield of linguistics, coined by H. P. Grice, which refers to what is suggested in an utterance, even though neither expressed nor strictly implied (that is, entailed) by the utterance.[1] For example, the sentence "Mary had a baby and got married" strongly suggests that Mary had the baby before the wedding, but the sentence would still be strictly true if Mary had her baby after she got married. Further, if we add the qualification "— not necessarily in that order" to the original sentence, then the implicature is cancelled even though the meaning of the original sentence is not altered.9. How can you define sentence meaning?A sentence meaning is often considered as the intrinsic property of the sentence itself in terms of a predication. It is abstract and independent of context. The meaning of an utterance is concrete, and context-dependent. The utterance meaning is based on sentence meaning; it is realization of the abstract meaning of a sentence in a real situation of communication, or simply in a context. For example, “There is a dog at the door”. The speaker could utter it as a matter- of- fact statement, telling the hearer that the dog is at the door. The speaker could use it as a warning, asking the hearer not to approach the door. There are other possibilities, too. So, the understanding of the utterance meaning of “There is a dog at the door” depends on the context in which it is uttered and the purpose for which the speaker utters it. A sentence is a grammatical concept. It usually consists of a subject and predicate. An utterance is the unit of communication. It is the smallest linguistic unit that has a communicative value.10.How can you distinguish competence and performance?Competence is the knowledge you (subconsciously) possess about how to speak a language.Performance is your real world linguistic output. Performance may accurately reflect competence, but it also may include speech errors due to slips of the tongue or, as Chomsky points out in the quote above, external factors such as memory problems, etc.Competence refers to a speaker's knowledge of his language as manifest in his ability to produce and to understand a theoretically infinite number of sentences most of which he may have never seen or heard before. Performance refers to the specific utterances, including grammatical mistakes and non-linguistic features like hesitations, accompanying the use of language. The distinction parallels Varela's distinction between organization and structure. The former refers to the relations and interactions specifically excluding reference to the properties of the refit’s components, whereas the latter refers to the relations manifest in the concrete realization of such a system in a physical space. Competence like organization describes the potentiality of a system. Performance like structure describes the forms actually realized as a subset of those conceivable.。

I've been studying so hard, my brain feels like it's going to burst with all the new words and grammar rules I've learned. The exam is split into three parts - listening, reading, and writing. The listening part is super fun because we get to hear all these different voices speaking English - some fast, some slow, some with accents. But I've been practicing every day, so I think I'll be okay. Plus, the stories are always really interesting - like one time I read about a dog who could talk! How cool is that? And then there's the writing part, which is probably my favorite. I love coming up with stories and ideas to write about. Sometimes I even surprise myself with what I come up with. It's like my imagination goes into overdrive and I can't stop myself from writing and writing and writing.I know the exam is going to be tough, but I'm not worried. I'm ready for you!篇4Hello everyone, my name is Lisa and I want to share with you the real deal about the 2024 degree English exam at Shandong University of Technology. It was a super duper tough exam, but I managed to survive and I'm here to tell you all about it.The first part of the exam was all about reading. We had to read a long passage about climate change and answer some tricky questions about it. I gotta tell you, my brain was working overtime trying to figure out the answers. Then, we had a bunch of vocabulary questions that had me scratching my head. I mean, who uses words like "sustainable" and "mitigation" in real life anyway?Next up was the listening section. This was probably the hardest part for me. The audio clips were so fast and the speakers had such strong accents, I could barely understand a word they were saying. I definitely need to practice my listening skills more if I want to pass next time. Then came the writing section. We had to write an essay about the importance of education in today's society. I talked about how education can help people achieve their dreams and make a better world for everyone. It was tough trying to come up with ideas on the spot, but I think I did a pretty good job.Last but not least was the speaking part. We had to give a short presentation about our favorite hobby. I chose to talk about painting because I love to express myself through art. I was so nervous standing up there in front of my classmates, but I think I did pretty well.Overall, the exam was a real challenge, but I'm proud of myself for giving it my best shot. Let me share with you what happened on that day.The exam started at 9 in the morning, and we had to bring our pencils, erasers, and rulers. The first part was a listening test, where we had to listen to different conversations and answer questions about them. Some of the passages were about history, technology, and even some funny stories. It was fun trying to find the answers in the text! Then came the writing part, where we had to write an essay about our favorite holiday. I chose Christmas because I love spending time with my family and giving and receiving presents.I wrote about how we decorate our house, the yummy food we eat, and the fun games we play together. The last part of the exam was the speaking test, where we had to talk about a topic given by the examiner.
