They drew simple pictures or signs to represent things and ideas, and also to represent the sounds of their language. The signs these people used became a kind of alphabet. The Egyptians used to record information and to tell stories by putting picture writing and pictures together. When an important person died, scenes and stories from his life were painted and carved on the walls of the place where he was buried. Some of these pictures are like modern comic strip stories. It has been said that Egypt is the home of the comic strip. But, for the Egyptians, pictures still had magic power. So they did not try to make their way of writing simple. The ordinary people could not understand it. By the year 1,000 BC, people who lived in the area around the Mediterranean Sea had developed a simpler system of writing. The signs they used were very easy to write, and there were fewer of them than in the Egyptian system. This was because each sign, or letter, represented only one sound in their language. The Greeks developed this system and formed the letters of the Greek alphabet. The Romans copied the idea, and the Roman alphabet is now used all over the world. These days, we can write down a story, or record information, without using pictures. But we still need pictures of all kinds: drawing, photographs, signs and diagrams. We find themeverywhere: in books and newspapers, in the street, and on the walls of the places where we live and work. Pictures help us to understand and remember things more easily, and they can makea story much more interesting.1. The Greek alphabet was simpler than the Egyptian system for all the following reasons EXCEPT that______.A. the former was easy to writeB. there were fewer signs in the formerC. the former was easy to pronounceD. each sign stood for only one sound3. Which of the following statements is TRUE?A. The Egyptian signs later became a particular alphabet.B. The Egyptians liked to write comic strip stories.C. The Roman alphabet was developed from the Egyptian one.D. The Greeks copied their writing system from the Egyptians.4. In the last paragraph, the author thinks that pictures ______.A. should be made comprehensibleB. should be made interestingC. are of much use in our lifeD. have disappeared from our life答案解析1. D) 根据文章第一段第五行“Perhaps the painters thought that their pictures would help them to catch these animals.”可知古代人以为在墙上画画会对他们有所帮助,故选项D为正确答案。

Choose the one that you think is the best answer.Mark your answers on your answer sheet.TEXT AAll Sir William Jones wanted to do was to learn Sanskrit. While he was studying, however, he made a surprising discovery. This ancient language of India was amazingly similar to Latin and Greek. The Sanskrit word for "mother"—matar—was almost identical to the Latin word, mater. “Father” was pitar in Sanskrit, pater in Latin and Greek. The more he studied, the more similarities he found. How could this be? Thousands of miles and many natural barriers separated India and Europe. Still, Jones concluded, the similarities were too strong to be accidental. In 1786, he announced “No one could examine them all three, without believing them to have sprung from some common source.”Since then, scholars have traced many languages to this “common source.” Today, these languages are called the Indo-European family. But where did this source originate? Language and geography provide the clues. European languages have similar words for the animals and trees of northern Europe, such as oak, willow, bear, and wolf. There are no common words for the animals and trees of southern Europe. To scholars, this suggests that the Indo-European languages began in north central Europe. In time, some northern Europeans set out toward the east, settling in Iran, India, and Pakistan. Others migrated westward toward southern and western Europe. The root language developed into dozens of different languages, but the family resemblances remain. The word for “three” is drei in German, tres in Spanish, tre in Albanian, and tri in Russian.Almost every language in Europe is part of the Indo-European family, but there are exceptions. Hungarian and Finnish cling to other language families. High in the Pyrenees, the Basque people speak a language that has no known relatives. Perhaps the Basques were the original inhabitants of the region. Isolated by mountains, they may have been bypassed by the spread of Indo-European culture.81. What did Sir William Jones discover when he was learning Sanskrit?A. Sanskrit was very similar to some European languages.B. Sanskrit was an ancient language.C. The Sanskrit word for mother is the same as that in Latin.D. Latin and Greek were very similar.82. Which of the following statements is true about "the common source"?A. Jones found out the common source.B. All languages sprang from the common source.C. Only three languages sprang from the common source.D. Since 1786, scholars have traced many languages to the common source.83. Where did the common source originate?A. In southernEurope.B. In north-central Europe.C. InIndia.D. in Pakistan.84. What can be concluded from the passage?A. Jones first discovered the root language.B. The languages with the common source are called the Indo-European family.C. The root language developed into different languages as people migrated.D. Every language in Europe is part of the Indo-European family. TEXT BYour first culture shock came after you left your home country and you needed to adjust to the United States, It is now important to learn cultural information about your company, so that you will fit in and perform successfully. The people who make up this environment have their own customs, habits and expectations of each new employee. Gathering information that is formal (policy) and informal (traditions) will help you learn the professional norms and become fully accepted. Policies are corporate documents describing procedures, rules, and standards that guide decision making and conduct. They are similar to official laws that govern a country. Some sources of such written company information include the annual report, product or service brochures, technical and procedural manual, employee directory and the company newsletter. Organizational traditions are usually unwritten hut common practices that have evolved over time. They set the tone and philosophy of the particular corporation, just as the customs of a country do. The best way to learn such information is to observe and talk with others such as your supervisor and co-workers.You can supplement ideas from formal introductory materials given you earlier. Explore with fellow employees those behaviors that may be tolerated but frowned upon. Ask your supervisor for feedback to avoidtypical traps that could cause your co-workers to reject you as a professional. Keep this guide nearby, and refer to it often in private. Reviewing formal company procedures, handouts, written notes, ideas, comments from bosses and colleagues, together with materials in this handbook, will help you make a more healthy cultural adjustment.85. Read this passage often.B. Discuss the organizational culture with your colleagues.C. Gather and review the formal and informal information in the corporation.D. Ask your boss for help.89. The passage is written to ___________.A. help readers to understand the organization's cultureB. explain the culture shockC. analyze the policies and traditionsD. help readers to work better with their supervisor and co-workersTEXT C“White hostility toward African Americans, and the resulting discrimination, have been fueled by a sense of threat. During slavery, many working-class whites, encouraged by slaveholders, feared the release of large numbers of blacks into the labor market and society in general. When northern industries used African Americans as strikebreakers in the first decades of this century, white workers feared the loss of their jobs. Today, many white Americans fear “black violence”. Moreover, specific fears about the “costs” of welfare as well as the "taking" of jobs through affirmative action have added to the fear of black violence. These fears have translated into negative stereotypes of African Americans as a people who are prone to crime and violence, unwilling to work, and a drain on the white taxpayer through their welfare dependency. In turn, these stereotypes have been used to justify informal discrimination, to prevent the help to the urban poor, to be negligent in enforcing laws or policies prohibiting discriminatory practices against black workers, and most important, to hesitate in making a serious effort at job creation for African Americans. The result is that African Americans’ share of valued resources has not increased much over the last two decades, even as formal discrimination has been greatly lessened. This fact is used to further the negative belief that African Americans have "not taken advantage of their equal opportunities."90. According to the passage, how did the northern industries make use of African Americans in 1900s?A. Sent them to ask the strikers to go back to work.B. Made them work very hard.C. Employed them to threaten the white strikers.D. Released them into the labor market.91. What is the ill influence of these negative stereotypes?A. Giving help to the poor black.B. Justifying informal discrimination.C. Enforcing laws prohibiting discriminatory practices against black workers.D. Creating opportunities of employment for the black.92. What can be inferred from "a drain on the white taxpayer" about the African Americans?A. They are unwilling to work.B. They never pay tax.C. They lack security.D. Their welfare depends on the white's tax.93. The author wrote the passage to tell us__________.A. African Americans pose a threat to the whites in employmentB. African Americans are dependent on the tax paid by the whitesC. African Americans are discriminated against because they are often on strikeD. the sense of threat intensifies the white's hospitality and discrimination against the African AmericansTEXT D“People thought of themselves as having rights from companies,” said Hoshua Freeman, a labor historian at Columbia University. That sense of entitlement grew even stronger in the early decades after World War II and collective bargaining became the arena for arguing out wages, pensions, health insurance, vacations, hours and job security. That system is disappearing today. Career-long attachments to one employer, a notion born in the 1920's, are no longer the .norm. The newclass-consciousness makes less distinction between workers and managers. Rights are relative, at best. An increasingly conservative electorate has reduced government's role in regulating the economy. Unions have lost influence and membership. What people do is try to cope, by themselves, said Ms. Skelly, of DYG. Self-employment is one solution, DYG's polls show, and that is a rising trend. "They try, on the job, to hide any weakness in their performance," she said. “They work longer hours and take work home, without letting the boss know, to give the impression that they can do difficult tasks quickly. There is nothing like, ‘we are all in this together.’ There is too much competition. People talk of their weakness to friends and spouses, but not to coworkers.”And many Americans feel in their hearts that the unemployment might be justified. “There is a sense among people that we are inefficient and bloated,” Ms. Skelly said. “And until they feel that is no longer true, they are reluctant to criticize the forces that are cutting out the fat and the inefficiencies.”94. It can be inferred from the second paragraph that ___________.A. people do not enjoy their rights nowadaysB. people are more likely to change their jobs than they were in the 1920'sC. workers and managers share the same rights todayD. nowadays, people refuse to take part in the Union95. According to Ms Skelly, which of the following is true?A. People like to work overtime.B. People want to work at home.C. People want to impress the boss with their capability and efficiency.D. People need help from their families, for they cannot cope with difficult problems themselves.96. People hide their weakness from___________.A. their parentsB. their wives or husbandsC. their friendsD. their colleagues97. The main idea of the passage is___________.A. people thought of themselves as having rights from companiesB. people's sense of entitlement is not as strong as it used to beC. people work at homeD. people regard unemployment as usualTEXT EYou may not have thought of it just this way, but the letter you write is part of you, and expression of your personality. Therefore to write letters that are mere patterns of form is to present a colorless personality.Letters, by their very nature, are too individual to be standardized. A letter may be absolutely perfect according to the standards of good taste and good form; but unless it also expresses something of the writer's personality, it is not a good letter. In other words, don't be satisfied to write letters that are just correct and nothing more. Try to write letters that are correct for you... letters that are warm and alive with reflections of your own personality. And if this sounds like a platitude (陈词滥调), stop for a moment and think back over your recent correspondence. What was the most interesting letter you received? Was it a letter anyone could have written? Or was it a letter that instantly “came alive” as you read it—that brought the personality of the sender right into the room with you. as though you were face to face, listening instead of reading? The fault with too many letters, today as in the past—the reason so many letters are dull and lifeless, and often fail to accomplish the purpose for which they are written is simply this: They sound exactly like the letters everyone else writes. They are neither exciting to receive nor stimulating to read.98. What does the author mean by saying “the letter you write is part of you”?A. Writing letters plays an important part in your life.B. When you write letters, you should be careful about what to write.C. People can see your personality from the letters you write.D. You should write good letters.99. What does the author want to explain in the fourth paragraph?A. A good letter presents one's personality.B. His opinion is a platitude.C. Letter-writing is interesting.D. Talking face to face is a better way to communicate than writing letters.100. The best title for the passage is___________.A. Letter WritingB. Personality in Letter WritingC. She was even willing to work without pay. That was the reason she found a volunteer job with an agency. The agency that she chose to work for was a business that helped other businesses find jobs for old people. Every day she talked with other retired people like herself. By talking, she recognized two things. Old people had abilities that were not being used. Old people also had problems——mostly problems with communication.Mrs. Douglas found a new purpose for herself. Through the years, from time to time she had written stories about people for national magazines. Now there was a new subject: old people like herself. She began to write a newspaper column called “Sixty Plus,” which focused on getting old. She writes about the problems of old people, especially their problems with being misunderstood.Anna Douglas uses her thinking ability to see the truth behind a problem. She understands the reasons why problems begin. She understands old people and young people, too. For example, one of her readers said that his grandchildren left the house as soon as he came to visit. Mrs. Douglas suggested some ways for him to increase understanding with his grandchildren. She told him to listen to young peoples music and to watch the most popular television shows.“It’s important to know something about your grandchildren’s world,” says Mrs.Douglas. “That means questioning and listening——and listening is not what old sters do best,” she continues, “Say good things to them and about them. Never criticize your grandchildren or any other youngsters, teenagers, or young adults.Never tell them that they are wrong. Don’t give them yo ur opinion. They have been taught that they should have respect for old people. The old should have respect for the young as well.”66. More thanhalf of these killings are drug-related. In 1988 New York City had its most violent year ever, with 1896 homicides. Many of these involved drugs. Such homicides are also a problem in Detroit, Baltimore, St. Louis, Los Angeles, Phoenix and scores of other cities where drug gangs war against one another and use violence to spread their deadly trade. In Bankhead Courts, and Atlanta housing project, drug-related crime has reached the point where mail carriers have had to depend on increased police patrols at delivery time. For years, we have attacked the supply side of the drug crisis, trying to choke off the flow of drugs into our country and stop the networks that distribute them. This strategy has failed miserably. Now it’s time to launch a whole new offensive. We must crack down on drug consumers. Last year, former First Lady Nancy Reagan had an emotional meeting with the parents of young woman who had died in a train crash that involved an engineer’s use of drugs. After that meeting, Mrs. Reagan said, “ If you’re a casual drug user, you’re an accomplice to murder.”Mary Jane Hatcher, widow of a New York City drug-enforcement agent killed in the drug wars, echoes that sentiment. “Even through the grief,” she said after her husband’s death earlier this year, “ I must ask, who really killed Everett Emerson from our society Look around. Wemiddle-class suburban Americans, we casual users, we dabblers in drugs keep the market in drugs an ever-increasing one. Therefore, Everett Emerson Hatcher was killed by all of us. Nice people. All of you who hear me now and fit this description, all of you must accept the blame for the loss of this good, gentle man.”70. The best title for this passage is ____.A. Who should be blamed for the death of Everett Emerson HatcherA. All of us.B. One of the drug gangs.C. Drug enforcement agent.D. Middle-class suburban Americans.TEXT CThere’s been a lot of talk about extraterrestrial beings visiting our planet. I don’t put much stock in that. I am convinced, however, that we are surrounded by sentient things of our own making whose single aim is the harassment of the individual and, ultimately, the destruction of society.Let me illustrate. A couple of years ago, I received a $ 600 insurance dividend. Sitting at the kitchen table, my wife and I discussed what we might do with the bonanza. I realize now that the refrigerator overheard our conversation. The very next day, it went berserk. The repairman told us we needed a new unit. Cost: $ 600.Not long after, we got a refund from the IRS, enough to pay for a vacation in Mexico.“I’ve something to tell you,” I said to my wife. “ Privately.”“How about the den” she suggested. I remembered that the color television set is in the den. “No, not there. Let’s go outside.”I showed her the check as we stood in the driveway. We hugged each other elatedly and hardly noticed the rain.My car was parked within earshot. I didn’t think anything of it at the time.As I started for the train the next morning, the car began making devilish screeching sounds.“The engine’s shot,” my mechanic said, “Replacing it will cost about a thousand d ollars.”The car’s demise convinced me I was on to something big. I dug through our financial records. I discovered that over the past ten years our receipt of “ found” money invariably was followed by equal expenditures to replace a hot-water heater, a television and a stove.Today, I lavish compliments on all the mechanical devices in our home. And I never, ever mention financial rewards in front of them. But if this article is published and I’m paid for it, the word processor is going to go wrong for sur e. It’ll know.74. But strangely enough, this man made his fortune on heavy canvas that he found suitable for working clothes. Strauss’ jeans were particularly good for prospectors and cowboys. In the early days of jeans, this man couldn’t have guessed that his pants, made only for rough work, would become so popular at all levels of society. Yes, this is a fact: jeans have become fashionable in our society. Furthermore, these pants have come to symbolize changes in social attitude. In the last decade or two we have seen movements toward equality as well as defiance of authority. Jeans, now worn by everybody, can be said to symbolize these changes for the better. In the past, only men wore jeans, and these men were at the bottom——socially and economically. Jeans were worn by truck drivers, farm and factory workers. Today, jeans no longer are looked down upon. They are worn by both men and women, by both skilled and unskilled workers, by both employees and employers. This common way of dressing symbolizes respect for individuality, no matter what your occupation or sex. In the fight against authority, young people have been the leaders. So it is natural that teenagers would defy parents and school administrators over the right to wear jeans to class and win. Jeans are the typical dress of civil rights marchers, fans at rock concerts, “hippies” returning to nature, and serious college students.Because everyone can be comfortable in them, the blue jeans invented for the use of workers are now accepted almost anywhere, anytime. This is true not only in the United States, but in many other countries in the world. I strongly agree with the following statement: “Old or new, glorified or plain, jeans are likely to be around for a long time to come. Already they have succeeded where statesmanship has failed. Although unable to speak the same language, the inhabitants of this embattled planet have at least agreed to wear the same pants.”77. Jeans, originally designed by Levi Strauss, ____.A. have become a symbol of the fashionable classB. have come to symbolize changes in social attitudeC. are suitable wear for rough work onlyD. are no longer so popular as they used to be78. What is implied but not directly stated in the passage is that____.A. young people have been the leaders in the fight against authorityB. today, jeans are no longer looked down uponC. jeans are the typical dress of civil rights marchersD. formerly students were not allowed to wear jeans to class79. The author is of the opinion that____.A. jeans are likely to be a short-lived fashionB. jeans are popular only in the United StatesC. jeans are likely to be popular for a long time to comeD. jeans are no longer fashionable80. The last two sentences imply that____.A. statesmen in the world are less competent than jeansB. the inhabitants of the world should speak the same languageC.statesmen have failed to reach agreement on many major issues of the worldD. jeans will help statesmen to reach agreement on some world issuesSECTION B SKIMMING AND SCANNING[5 MIN.]In this section there are five passages with a total of ten multiple-choice questions. Shakespeare lovers keen to see the place where the Bard’s mother Mary Arden grew up have been visiting the wrong house since the 18th century. The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust said that new research had shown the Tudor farmhouse long known as “Mary Arden’s House” in fact belonged to a family friend. The mother ofWilliam Shakespe are, England’s most famous playwriter, actually lived in another property close bythe Warwickshire village of Wilmcote, three miles north ofStratford-upon-Avon. The discovery was made by local historian Nat Alcock, who traced medieval land deeds, including a rental agreement dating from 1587, showing that a building known as Glebe Farm was Mary’s childhood home. The house thought to have been her home was in fact owned by Adam Palmer, a family friend and neighbor. Glebe Farm will now be known as Mary Arden’s House and the building which previously bore that name will be called Palmer’s Farm.TEXT FFirst read the following questions.83. For our purposes, we'll call a small business any independently owned and operated, profit-seeking enterprise that has fewer than five hundred employees.Small businesses may be little, but they have a very large impact on our society. Statistics tell us thatsmall businesses comprise about 97% of all nonfarm businesses in the US; they employ over 50% of the privateworkforce; they dominate such US industries as retailing and construction; and they will generate half of all new US jobs created during the next decade. Moreover, small businesses are where the job growth has been in recent years. Between 1988 and 1992, US firms with 19 or fewer employees created 78% of the new jobs. And the importance of small businesses is also increasing around the world in places like Japan, China, and the United Kingdom. Now to the question at hand: Is the job of managing a small business different from that of managing a large one? A study comparing the two found that the importance of roles differed significantly. The small business manager's most important role is that of spokesperson. The small business manager spends a large amount of time doing such outwardly directed activities as meeting with customers, arranging financing with bankers, searching for new opportunities, and stimulating change. In contrast, the most important concerns of a manager in a large organization are directed internally ?atoward deciding which organizational units get what available resources and how much of them. According to this study, the entrepreneurial role ?a looking for business opportunities and planning activities for performance improvement ?a is the least important to managers in large firms.82. Meteorologists warned that roads across the region remained dangerous. The National Weather Service said blizzards would hit parts of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin through Saturday. The storm had already dumped significant snow across the region, including a record 14 inches in Oklahoma City and 11 inches in Duluth, Minn., on Thursday.Slippery roads have been blamed for at least 21 deaths thisweek as the storm lumbered across the country from the Southwest. Ice storm warnings and winter weather advisories were issued for parts of the East Coast on Friday, but the region was largely spared. Paul Mews, who drove from Faribault, Minn., to a relative's home in Plum City, Wis., on Friday morning, said the first 15 minutes of the 80-mile trip were clear, but a surge of heavy snowfall produced a stretch of near-whiteout conditions. "It was snow-pocalypse. It was wicked," said Mews, 25. "We thought about turning around and going back." They decided to continue when the surge passed minutes later.Others weren't as lucky. Army Sgt. Mark Matthey was spending Friday night at the Flying J Travel Plaza in Sioux Falls, S.D., after Interstate 90 closed. Matthey, 26, left Fort Bragg, N.C., on Wednesday for his hometown of Spokane, Wash., in hopes of making it by late Friday or early Saturday. Instead, he spent Friday afternoon drinking coffee, watching TV and making friends at the truck stop. He planned to find a spot to sleep on the floor or in the cab of his truck. Matthey said he and the other travelers were in decent spirits. "Everybody has the attitude that you have to play the cards you were dealt," he said. "No use in getting upset about something you can't control."86. Like most of culture, these rules usually function below the level of consciousness. Angyle makes much the same point when comparing cultural differences in punctuality standards:How late is "late"? This varies greatly. In Britain and America one may be 5 minutes late for a business appointment, but not 15 and certainly not 30 minutes late, which is perfectly normal in Arab countries. On the other hand in Britain it is correct to be 5-15 minutes late for an invitation to dinner. An Italian might arrive 2 hours late, an Ethiopian after, and a Javanese not at all ?a he had accepted only to prevent his host from losing face. Our reaction to punctuality is rooted in our cultural experiences. In the US, we have all learned that the boss can arrive late for a meeting without anyone raising an eyebrow; ifthe secretary is late, he or she may receive a reprimand in the form of a stern glance. A rock star or a doctor can keep people waiting for long periods of time, but the warm-up band and the nurse had better be on time. In Latin America, one is expected to arrive late to appointments as a sign of respect. This same tardiness would be perceived as rudeness in Germany. According to Hall and Hall, "Promptness is taken for granted in Germany ?a in fact, it's almost an obsession."We can ascertain a culture's attitude toward time by examining the pace at which members of that culture perform specific acts and respond to certain events. Americans, because of the pace of life in the US, always seem to be in a hurry ?a for them, there is always one more thing to do. Conveniences ?a from fast-food restaurants, one-stop gas stations and microwave ovens ?a help most of us get things done quickly. We find the "fast lane" most appealing. We grow up hearing people say, "Don't waste so much time." We are impatient when things take too long, and we act as if we believe the French proverb "Patience is the virtue of asses."Other cultures see time differently and hence live life at a pace different from that of most people inthe US. The Japanese, Arab, and Chinese cultures, for example, treat time in ways that often appear at cross-purposes with American goals. Indonesians are yet another group that do not want to be pressured or hurried. They perceive time as a limitless pool. There is even a phrase in Indonesia describing this concept that is translated as "rubber time", so that time stretches or shrinks and is therefore very flexible. In Africa, where a slow pace is the rule, people who rush are suspected of trying to cheat.90. The concepts about time are not _______.A) culture-specificB) taught in coursesC) so desirable in Arab, Latin American and African countriesD) taken for granted in Germany91. _______ people are very impatient according to the author.A) AmericanB) FrenchC) GermanD) British92. The passage is best entitled as _______.A) Informal TimeB) Communication between CulturesC) Pace of LifeD) PunctualityText DIn most parts of the world, winter is cold and harsh; the Christmas tree, with its ornaments and twinkling lights, is a sign of warmth and gaiety. The Christmas tree is such a popular symbol of the winter holiday that it has been adopted by people of many faiths all over the world. Many ancient cultures perceived trees to be symbols of the universe, and trees were often associated with the many pagan solar deities whose birthdays were celebrated during the winter solstices. Evergreen trees in particular were seen as symbols of divinity and immortality, because they do not "die" as other treesdo. The evergreen tree has also been long associated with gift giving ?a citizens of ancient Rome celebrated the Saturnalia, a week-long December festival honoring the God Saturnus, by exchanging giftsattached to evergreen branches. In an Old Norse tradition, evergreens were burned to encourage the return of the sun. A direct descendent of this practice, which is still carried out in remote parts of Europe, is the Yule log. The custom of burning a tree was eventually replaced with trees or wooden pyramids decorated with burning candle, which are still common in many households in Europe. As trees have long been a symbol of rebirth, the Christmas tree became a natural symbol for the resurrected God of Christianity. The first known record of a decorated tree honoring the Christian nativity was a sixteenth-century description of a tree decorated with "roses cut out of many-colored paper, apples, wafers, gold foil and sweets", which was burned in the old tradition.Strong opposition to Christmas trees by the Puritan settlers kept Christmas trees out of American territory until the nineteenth century, when German settlers popularized the tradition. Until recent years, the Christmas tree was hung upside-down, suspended from the ceiling.94. Christmas trees are all the following EXCEPT that _______.A) they are adopted to celebrate the birth of Christ by many faiths all over the worldB) they are decorated with ornaments and lightsC) they are regarded as a symbol of warmth and joyD) they are used in the celebration of the winter holiday95. So engrossed had they been in their gossip that they had not heard her light tread and now, confronted by their hostess, they looked like whispering schoolgirls caught by a teacher. Alarm was added to consternation at the change in Melanie's face. She was pink with righteous anger, her gentle eyes snapping fire, her nostrils quivering. No one had ever seen Melanie angry before. Not a lady present thought her capable of wrath. They all loved her but they thought her the sweetest, most pliable of young women, deferential to her elders and without any opinions of her own.。

However, different people have different opinions towards this phenomenon.Having a company before graduation can bring some advantages to the students.Firstly, the students can earn some money and support themselves. That will raise their independent and exploring spirit. Secondly, the companies can serve as an important channel for the students to communicate with the out world. Finally, the students can learn some real experience which they cannot learn in college. However, the negative effects of having a company before graduation should not be neglected. To run a company will cost much time which should be spent on studying. The main task of students is studying, that’s why many students abandoned the company and returned to classes. In addition, students lack financial support and economic knowledge to handle a company. In my opinion, to some extent, we should encourage students to have a company in order to gain some experience and money. Choose the one that you think is the best answer.Mark your answers on your ANSWER SHEET.TEXT AIt is possible for students to obtain advanced degree in English while knowing little or nothing about traditional scholarly methods. The consequences of this neglect of traditional scholarship are particularly unfortunate for the study of women writers. If the canon-the list of authors whose works are most widely taught-is ever to include more women, scholars must be well trained in historical scholarship and textual editing. Scholars who do not know how to read early manuscripts, locate rare books, establish a sequence of editions, and so on are lacking crucial tools for revising the canon. To address such concerns, an experimental version of the traditional scholarly methods course was designed to raise students’ consciousness about the usefulness of traditional learning for any modern critic or theorist. To minimize the artificial aspects of the conventional course, the usual procedure of assigning a large number of small problems drawn from the entire range of historical periods was abandoned, though this procedure has the obvious advantage of at least superficially familiarizing students with; a wide range of reference sources.①Instead students were engaged in a collective effort to do original work on a neglected eighteenth century writer, Elizabeth Griffith, to give them an authentic experience of literary scholarship and to inspire them to take responsibility for the quality of their own work.Griffith’s work presented a number of advantages for this particular pedagogical purpose. First, the body of extant scholarship on Griffith was so tiny that it could be all read in a day, thus students spent little time and effort mastering the literature and had a clear field for their own discoveries. Griffith’s play-The Platonic Wife exists in three visions, enough to provide illustrations of editorial issues but not too many for beginning students to manage. In addition, because Griffith was successful in the eighteenth century, as her continued productivity and favorable reviews demonstrate, her exclusion from the canon and virtual disappearance from literary history also helped raise issues concerning the current canon. The range of Griffith’s work meant that each student could become the world’s leading authority on a particular Griffith text. For example, a student studying Griffith’s Wife in the Right obtained a first edition of the play and studied it for some weeks. This student was suitably shocked and outraged to find its title transformed into A Wife in the Night in Watt’s Bibliotheca Britannica. Such experiences, inevitable and common in working on a writer to whom so little attention has been paid serve to vaccinate the students-I hope for alifetime-against credulous use of reference sources.②81. The author of the passage is primarily concerned with ______.A. revealing a commonly ignored deficiencyB. proposing a return to traditional methodC. describing an attempt to correct a shortcomingD. assessing the success of a new pedagogical approach82. Which of the following is a disadvantage of the strategy employed in the experimental scholarly methods course?A. Students were not given an opportunity to study women writers outside the canon.B. Students had little background knowledge for further research.C. Most of the students in the course had little opportunity to study 18th century literature.D. Students were not given an opportunity to encounter certain sources of information that could prove useful in their future studies.83. The "particular pedagogical purpose" mentioned in Paragraph 3 is to ______.A. minimize the trivial aspects of the traditional scholarly methods courseB. encourage scholarly rigor in students’ own researchC. reestablish Griffith’s r eputation as an authorD. bridge the gap between the new method and the traditional approach84. It can be inferred that the author expects, that the experience of the student mentioned as having studied Wife in the Right would have the effect that ______.A. it would lead the student to have a clear understanding of the editorsB. it would teach the student to question the accuracy of certain kinds of information sources when studying neglected authorsC. it would teach the student to avoid the use of reference sources in studying neglected authorsD. it would enhance the student’s appreciation of the works of authors not include in the canon85. What is the function of the last paragraph in relation to the passage as a whole?A. It summarizes the benefits students can derive from the experimental scholarly methods course.B. It provides additional reasons why Griffith’s works raises issues having to do with the canon of authors.C. It provides an illustration of the immediate nature of the experiences students can derive from the experimental scholarly methods course.D. It contrasts the experience of a student in the experimental scholarly methods course with the experience of a student in the traditional course.TEXT BCultural norms so completely surround people, so permeate thought and action, that we never recognize the assumptions on which their lives and their sanity rest. As one observer put it, if birds were suddenly endowed with scientific curiosity they might examine many things, but the sky itself would be overlooked as a suitable subject; if fish were tobecome curious about the world, it would never occur to them to begin by investigating water.①For birds and fish would take the sky and sea for granted, unaware of their profound influence because they comprise the medium for every fact. Human beings, in a similarly way, occupy a symbolic universe governed by codes that are unconsciously acquired and automatically employed. So much so that they rarely notice that the ways they interpret and talk about events are distinctively different from the ways people conduct their affairs in other cultures. As long as people remain blind to the sources of their meanings, they are imprisoned within them. These cultural frames of reference are no less confining simply because they cannot be seen or touched. Whether it is an individual neurosis that keeps an individual out of contact with his neighbors, or a collective neurosis that separates neighbors of different cultures, both are forms of blindness that limit what can be experienced and what can be learned from others.②It would seem that everywhere people would desire to break out of the boundaries of their own experiential worlds. Their ability to react sensitively to a wider spectrum of events and peoples requires an overcoming of such cultural parochialism. But, in fact, few attain this broader vision. Some, of course, have little opportunity for wider cultural experience, though this condition should change as the movement of people accelerates. Others do not try to widen their experience because they prefer the old and familiar, seek from their affairs only further confirmation of the correctness of their own values. Still others recoil from such experiences because they feel it dangerous to probe too deeply into the personal or cultural unconscious. Exposure may reveal how tenuous and arbitrary many cultural norms are; such exposure might force people to acquire new bases for interpreting events. And even for the many who do seek actively to enlarge the variety of human beings with whom they are capable of communicating there are still difficulties.Cultural myopia persists not merely because of inertia and habit, but chiefly because it is so difficult to overcome. One acquires a personality and a culture in childhood, long before he is capable of comprehending either of them. To survive, each person masters the perceptual orientations, cognitive biases, and communicative habits of his own culture. But once mastered, objective assessment of these same processes is awkward since the same mechanisms that are being evaluated must be used in making the evaluations.86. The examples of birds and fish are used to ______.A. show that they, too, have their respective culturesB. explain humans occupy a symbolic universe as birds and fish occupy the sky and the seaC. illustrate that human beings are unaware of the cultural codes governing themD. demonstrate the similarity between man, birds, and fish in their ways of thinking87. The term "parochialism" (Line 3, Para. 3) most possibly means ______.A. open-mindednessB. provincialismC. superiorityD. discrimination88. It can be inferred from the last two paragraphs that ______.A. everyone would like to widen their cultural scope if they canB. the obstacles to overcoming cultural parochialism lie mainly in people’s habit of thinkingC. provided one’s brought up in a culture, he may be with bias in making cultural evaluationsD. childhood is an important stage in comprehending culture89. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A. Individual and collective neurosis might prevent communications with others.B. People in different cultures may be governed by the same cultural norms.C. People’s visions will be enlarged if only they knew that cultural differences exist.D. If cultural norms are something tangible, they won’t be so confining.90. The passage might be entitled "______."A. How to Overcome Cultural MyopiaB. Behavioral Patterns and Cultural BackgroundC. Harms of Cultural MyopiaD. Cultural Myopia-A Deep-rooted Collective Neurosis TEXTCA Holy Week procession (Settimana Santa) is an event taking place in Holy Week, most often in a country with traditional Roman Catholic culture. This tradition goes back a long way, to a Christian use in medieval times and in some cases there are testimonies dating back to the XVI century. The Easter period is an incredibly important time in the calendar of this largely Roman Catholic nation, and events are used to mark the occasion throughout Italy. One of the most important of these occurs in Rome on Good Friday, when the Pope leads a procession past the Colosseum and the Roman Forum right up to the ancient Palatine Hill. Then on Easter Sunday the Pontiff holds Mass and gives a blessing to the crowd from the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica.Around of the country Italians celebrate the Easter period with processions and plays depicting Christ’s final hours. Easter feasts are also a part of Italian celebrations; typical fare includes spring lambs and lots of sweet bread, cakes and special chocolates. In today’s world where the festivals can often be taken for granted as just a great party, it is the novena, and the other religious aspects that keep the true link to the past alive. Our secular society is often at odds with the value systems that brought about these religious festivals and yet it seems that the younger generations still enjoy participating. The older generations often lament the loss of faith in the young people and wonder how religious festivals can survive without losing their soul. However, the fact is nothing in human culture is static and every generation celebrates in their own way, often against the wishes of the elders. Some of the larger festivals have become annual tourist attractions, bringingin needed revenue to the old Italian American communities that hold the events and often benefiting the city as a whole.91. Which of the following is INCORRECT?A. This procession has a long history.B. The procession has wide influence.C. The procession occurs in countries with traditional Roman Catholic culture only.D. The procession may originate from 16th century.92. Which of the following is the activity held in Easter period?A. ProcessionsB. PlaysC. FeastsD. All of the above.93. The author’s attitude towards the modern secular society is ______.A. CommendatoryB. objectiveC. incredulityD. absurd94. Which of the following is true?A. Nowadays the festivals are purely commercial.B. Young people enjoy the festivals because they are religious.C. The older generations are worried about the death of these festivals.D. The older generations are concerned about the change of these festivals.TEXTDParkour is a physical activity that is difficult to categorize. It is not an extreme sport, but an art or discipline that resembles self-defense in the martial arts. According to David Belle, "the physical aspect of parkour is getting over all the obstacles in your path as you would in an emergency. You want to move in such a way, with any movement, as to help you gain the most ground on someone or something, whether escaping from it or chasing toward it.①Thus, when faced with a hostile confrontation with a person, one will be able to speak, fight, or flee. As martial arts are a form of training for the fight, parkour is a form of training for the flight. Because of its unique nature, it is often said that parkour is in its own category: "Parkour is parkour."An important characteristic of parkour is efficiency. Practitioners move not only as fast as they can, but also in the least energy-consuming and most direct way possible. This characteristic distinguishes it from the similar practice of free running, which places more emphasis on freedom of movements, such as acrobatics. Efficiency also involves avoiding injuries, short and long-term, part of why parkour’s unofficial motto is tre et durer (to be and to last).Tracers claim that parkour also influences one’s thought process by enhancing critical thinking skills that allow one to overcome everyday physical and mental obstacles. There are fewer predefined movements in parkour than gymnastics, as it does not have a list of appropriate "moves." Each obstacle a tracer faces presents a unique challenge on how they can overcome it effectively, which depends on their body type, speed and angle of approach, the physical make-up of the obstacle, etc. Parkour is about training the body mind to react to those obstacles appropriately with a technique that works. Often that technique cannot and need not be classified and given a name. In many cases effective parkour techniques depend on fast redistribution of body weight and the use of momentum to perform seemingly impossible or difficult body maneuvers at speed. Absorption and redistribution of energy is also an important factor, such as body rolls when landing which reduce impact forces on the legs and spine, allowing a tracer to jump from greater heights than those often considered sensible in other forms of acrobatics and gymnastics. There are many basic techniques that are emphasized to beginners for their versatility and effectiveness. Most important are good jumping and landing techniques. The roll, used to limit impact after a drop and to carry one’s momentum onward, is often stressed as the most important technique to learn.②Many tracers develop joint problems from too many large drops and rolling incorrectly. Due to large drops parkour has sometimes received criticism for its questionable safety. Several communities in Great Britain have been warned by law enforcement or fire and rescue of the potential dangers of parkour. Although David Belle has never been seriously injured while practicing parkour, there is no careful study about the health issues of large drops and tracers stress gradual progression to avoid any problems.③95. Having a Company Before Graduation
Recently, having a company is becoming a fashionable trend for students when they are still in college. However, different people have different opinions towards this phenomenon.
Having a company before graduation can bring some advantages to the students. Firstly, the students can earn some money and support themselves. In
addition, students lack financial support and economic knowledge to handle a company.
In my opinion, to some extent, we should encourage students to have a company in order to gain some experience and money. But after all, the major part of the students energy should be put on their studying.

What Would You Like to Do after Graduation?
Nowadays it seems more and more difficult for college students to find a satisfactory job, since millions of college graduates pour into the tight job market every year. As a result, many of them have to do with jobs irrelevant to their specialities. So more and more graduates prefer to continue their studies in school after graduation.
There are several other reasons for this consideration. Firstly, at present the general economy presents a gloomy picture. The increase of job opportunities cannot meet the increasing number of college graduates. Secondly, as the information age approaches, more and more knowledge is required for us to gear to the development of technology, and the best way is to sharpen our edges in school. Finally, higher academic degrees always mean higher income for employees. So it is also valuable investment to continue our study in view of this.
Therefore, as far as I am concerned, I am going to continue my postgraduate in school. That’s what the old Chinese saying goes: sharpen the edge of your axe before chopping down the tree.
