Typically, a range of pipe toughness is installed in the burst test section, with the pipe toughness increasing on each side of the test section as the distance from the fracture origin increases. The CVN absorbed energy needed for arrest is established based upon the actual CVN absorbed energy of the pipe in which arrest is observed to occur. The pipeline-specific gas composition, temperature and pressure level are used for the burst test. Thus, it is the most general approach and is applicable for pipeline designs that are outside the existing database of test results.
