For example, the Japanese will say to travellers, "Go straight ahead and turn left at the hotel. The post office is across from the bus stop."In the countryside of the American Midwest, there are no towns or buildings in many places. Instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distances. In Kansas, for example, people will say, "Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile."People in Los Angeles, California have no idea of distances. They measure (测量) distances in time, not miles. "How far away is the post office?" you ask. "Oh," they answer, "it's about five minutes from here."It's true that a person doesn't know the answer sometimes. What happens in such a situation? A New Yorker might say, "Sorry, I don't know." He was confused(困惑的), so he went up to his mother and asked, "Why was I born with a shell that grew so hard and heavy?" His mother said, "Because we don't have bones to hold us up. We can only move slowly, so we need a shell to protect(保护) us."The baby snail asked again, "The caterpillar (毛毛虫) has no bones, either, and she can't move quickly. Why can she live without a shell?" The mother snail answered, "That's because a caterpillar will become a butterfly (蝴蝶). She can fly high into the sky. The sky can protect her."The baby snail had one more question,"But the earthworm (蚯蚓) moves like us. He has no bones and he won't turn into a butterfly. Why doesn't he carry a hard and heavy shell?" His mother said, "He can dig a hole and hide in the ground, and then the earth can protect him."The baby snail then cried, "We are so poor! We have no protection from the sky or from the ground!" His mother smiled at him, "That's why we have a shell. My dear, imagine that if we don't have the shells, what will happen to us? Hot sun will dry out our bodies and we'll have nowhere to sleep. What's worse, we'll die in the heavy rain. How terrible it is! We don't depend on the sky or the ground for protection. Many procedures are available for obtaining data about a language. They range from a carefully planned, intensive field investigation in a foreign country to a casual introspection about one’s mother tongue carried out in an armchair at home.B. In all cases, someone has to act as a source of language data – an informant. Informants are (ideally) native speakers of a language, who provide utterances for analysis and other kinds of information about the language (e.g. translations, comments about correctness, or judgements on usage). Often, when studying their mother tongue, linguists act as their own informants, judging the ambiguity, acceptability, or other properties of utterances against their own intuitions. The convenience of this approach makes it widely used, and it is considered the norm in the generative approach to linguistics. But a linguist’s personal judgements are often uncertain, or disagree with the judgements of other linguists, at which point resource is needed to more object methods of enquiry, using non-linguists as informants. The later procedure is unavoidable when working on foreign languages, or child speech.C. Many factors must be considered when selecting informants – whether one is working with single speakers (a common situation when languages have not been described before), two people interacting, small groups or large-scale samples. Age, sex, social background and other aspects of identity are important, as these factors are known to influence the kind of language used. The topic of conversation and the characteristics of the social setting (e.g. the level of formality) are also highly relevant, as are the personal qualities of the informants (e.g. their fluency and consistency). For largerstudies, scrupulous attention has been paid to the sampling theory employed, and in all cases, decisions have to be made about the best investigative techniques to use.D. Today, researchers often tape-record informants. This enables the linguist’s claims about the language to be checked, and provides a way of making those claims more accurate (‘difficult’ pieces of speech can be listened to repeatedly). But obtaining naturalistic, good-quality data is never easy. People talk abnormally when they know they are being recorded, and sound quality can be poor. A variety of tape-recording procedures have thus been devised to minimise the ‘observer’s paradox’ (how to observe the way people behave when they are not being observed). Some recordings are made without the speakers being aware of the fact – a procedure that obtains very natural data, though ethical objections must be anticipated. Alternatively, attempts can be made to make the speaker forget about the recording, such as keeping the tape recorder out of sight, or using radio microphones. A useful technique is to introduce a topic that quickly involves the speaker, and stimulates a natural language style (e.g. asking older informants about how times have changed in their locality).E. An audio tape recording does not solve all the linguist’s problems, however. Speech is often unclear and ambiguous. Where possible, therefore, the recording has to be supplements by the observer’s written comments on the non-verbal behaviour of the participants, and about the context in general. A facial expression, for example, can dramatically alter the meaning of what is said. Video recordings avoid these problems to a large extent, but even they have limitations (the camera cannot be everywhere), and transcription always benefits from any additional commentary provided by an observer.F. Linguists also make great use of structured sessions, in which they systematically ask their informants for utterances that describe certain actions, objects or behavious. With a bilingual informant, or though use of an interpreter, it is possible to use translation technique (‘How do you say table in your language?’). A large number of points can be covered in a short time, using interview work-sheets and questionnaires. Often, the researcher wishes to obtain information about just a single variable, in which case a restricted set of questions may be used: a particular feature of pronunciation, for example, can be elicited by asking the informant to say a restricted set of words. There are also several direct methods of elicitation, such as asking informants to fill in the blanks in a substitution frame (e.g. 'I ___ see a car.'), or feeding them the wrong stimulus for correction (‘Is it possible to say I no can see?’).G. A representative sample of language, complied for the purpose of linguistic analysis, is known as a corpus. A corpus enables the linguist to make unbiased statements about frequency of usage, and it provides accessible data for the use of different researchers. Its range and size are variable. Some corpora attempt to cover the language as a whole, taking extracts from many kinds of text; others are extremely selective, providing a collection of material that deals only with a particular linguistic feature. The size of the corpus depends on practical factors, such as the time available to collect, process and store the data: it can take up to several hours to provide an accurate transcription of a few minutes of speech. Sometimes a small sample of data will be enough to decide a linguistic hypothesis; by contrast, corpora in major research projects can total millions of words. An important principle is that all corpora, whatever their size, are inevitably limited in their coverage, and always need to be supplemented by data derived from the intuitions of native speakers of the language, though either introspection or experimentation.Question 1-5There are 7 paragraphs labelled A-G. Which paragraph contains the following information? Write the correct answer A-G into boxes1-5 on the answer sheet. You may use any letter more than once.1. The effect of recording on the way people talk.2. The importance of taking note on body language.3. The fact that language is influenced by social situation.4. 试题四Part I Reading ComprehensionSection ADirections:There are three reading passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four suggested answersmarked A, B, C and D. Choose the best answer to each question.Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:Doctors say very few children survived cancer before the nineteen seventies. Improved treatments now offer hope of long-term survival for almost eighty percent of young cancer patients. Yet the chemotherapy drugs and radiation used to stop their cancers can lead to other problems later.A newly reported study looked at more than ten thousand adults who survived childhoodcancers. They were treated between nineteen seventy and nineteen eighty-six. Their average age at the time of the study was twenty-six.The study compared their medical histories with those of three thousand of their brothers and sisters. The researchers found that sixty-two percent of the cancer survivors had at least one long-term health problem. The same was true of only thirty-seven percent of the brothers and sisters. The cancer survivors were eight times as likely as their siblings to have severe or life-threatening conditions as adults. And many of the survivors had three or more conditions. The cancer survivors were at higher risk of problems like heart disease and early bone loss. Chemotherapy can damage bone growth during an important period of development. And radiation for some cancers can increase the risk of other cancers later.Survivors of bone cancers, cancers of the central nervous system and Hodgkin's disease were at highest risk for health problems as adults. The study also found that girls who survived cancer were more likely than boys to have problems later.Doctors say newer cancer treatments are a little safer but not much. Still, the good news is that many of the conditions linked to cancer treatments can be found when they are still treatable.1. What kind of treatment used to stop their cancers can lead to other problems later according to this passage?A. Chemotherapy drugs.B. Radiation.C. Chemotherapy drugs and radiation.D. Surgery.2. A newly reported study researched over ten thousand adults _____________.A. who used only radiation to stop their cancersB. who were treated after 1986C. whose average age at the time of the study was over forty-sixD. who survived childhood cancers3. The word “siblings” in the third paragraph means _____________.A. parentsB. childrenC. brothers and sistersD. relations4. Which of the following statements is TRUE?A. Doctors say before the 1970s it was impossible for many children to survive cancer.B. The cancer survivors were at higher risk of problems like heart disease and other cancers.C. Radiation can damage bone growth during an important period of development.D. The research found that boys who survived cancer were more likely than girls to have problemslater.5. This passage is most probably an excerpt from ________________.A. a newspaper editorialB. a heath reportC. a personal diaryD. a science fictionQuestions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:“United 93”, in contrast to another film “Flight 93”, has some glaring differences. The names of the passengers are barely mentioned, and never is an individual person singled out in a moment of suspense. The passengers all seemed equals, finding themselves in the same frightening situation with similar thoughts and concerns. The terrorists were fast, merciless and poised. They seemed ready and willing to carry out the tasks they were chosen to perform. This film shows the events of that day for what they were. It also chooses not to immortalize the passengers, but to serve as a wake up call for our people to realize that those events weren't yesterday.Director Greengrass' “United 93” should not be considered to be just a film. It is a testament of courage and should be seen as a compelling look into the human nature. See this film, but not for entertainment values. See this film because while the events of “911”may have changed America, they may not have changed our people. While “Flight 93”seems like an attempt for ground breaking entertainment, “United 93” feels as if Greengrass is telling us that there is something to learn from this tragedy. Possibly the film is trying to say that going through the trauma of “911” wasn't motivation enough to stand up together as a country. Greengrass knew that this film and its subject would gain much attention and controversy, but what one does with the attention is what will ultimately define the film. Like the Oscar winner “Schindler's List”, this film will be regarded highly for the h allowed events depicted but not as entertainment.6. The phrase “that day” in Paragraph One refers to____________.A. the Independence Day of the U. S.B. September the 11th when America was attacked by terroristsC. the day when Flight 93 made its first flightD. the day when the movie “United 93” was screened7. According to this passage, what is the movie “United 93” really trying to convey?A. It means to immortalize the passengers.B. It tries to tell a stirring story for entertainment.C. It means to serve as a wake up call for people nowadays.D. It tries to convey people’s concern about flight safety.8. How many movies are there mentioned in this passage?A. One.B. Two.C. Three.D. Four.9. According to this passage, which of the following statements is NOT true?A. As a movie, “United 93” is not quite similar to “Flight 93”.B. The passengers in “United 93” are portrayed as ordinary characters under crises.C. The movie “Flight 93” seems like an attempt for groundbreaking entertainment.D. Greengrass knew the subject of “Flight 93” would gain much attention and controversy.10. The passage is most probably from _____________.A. a movie magazineB. a history textbookC. a governmental documentD. a brochure of an airline companyQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:It happens to every medical student sooner or later. You get a cough that persists for a while. Ordinarily, you would just ignore it—but now armed with your rapidly growing medical knowledge, you can’t help worrying. The cough could mean just a cold, but it could also be a sign of lung cancer. For doctors in training, nurses and medical journalists, hypochondria (疑病症) is an occupational danger. The feeling usually passes after a while, leaving only a funny story to tell at a dinner party. But for the tens of thousands who suffer from true hypochondria they live in a constant terror that they are dying of some awful disease, or even several awful diseases at once. Doctors can assure them that there’s nothing wrong, but since the cough is real, the assurances fall on deaf ears. And because no physician or test can offer a 100% guarantee that one doesn’t have cancer, a hypochondriac always has fuel to feed his or her worst fears.Hypochondriacs don’t harm just themselves; they block the whole healthcare system. Although they account for only about 6% of the patients who visit doctors every year, they tend to burden their physicians with frequent visits that take up excessive amounts of time. And the problem may be worse, thanks to the popularity of medical information on the Internet. They go on the Web and learn about new diseases and new presentations of old disease that they never even knew about before. Doctors have taken to calling this phenomenon cyberchondria (网络疑病症).11. According to the passage, suffering from hypochondria means________.A. you cannot be a good medical student or a medical workerB. you are haunted by a possibly inexistent diseaseC. you will never get rid of this diseaseD. you are tortured by several diseases at the same time12. Which of the following best summarizes the main idea of the passage?A. Hypochondria happens to everybody sooner or later.B. We n eedn’t worry about hypochondria since it is not dangerous at all.C. Hypochondria originates from too much knowledge of medicine.D. Hypochondria and its unnecessary terrors to both individuals and the healthcare system.13. Why can’t doctors convince t he sufferers that there is nothing wrong?A. Because the doctors can’t cure the minor diseases.B. Because the doctors don’t assure them of that.C. Because the sufferers are deaf and can’t hear what the doctors say.D. Because no doctors can offer a g uarantee that someone doesn’t have a cancer.14. The problem becomes worse because_________.A. the number of patients increasesB. medical knowledge is widely spread on the internetC. doctors haven’t tried their bestD. new diseases and symptoms emerge constantly15. What can you infer from the passage?A. The author considers that hypochondria is an incurable disease.B. The author thinks that the consequences of hypochondria might be disastrous.C. The author suggests that the patients who have hypochondria should set their minds at ease.D. The author sympathizes with the patients who suffer from hypochondria.Section BDirections:In this section there is a short passage with five questions or incomplete statements. Read the passage carefully, and answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewestpossible words.Spending time in a bookshop can be most enjoyable, whether you are a book-lover or merely go there to buy a book as a present. You may even have entered the shop just to find shelter from a sudden shower. Whatever the reason, you can soon become totally unaware of your surroundings. The desire to pick up a book with an attractive dust-jacket is irresistible, although this method of selection ought not to be followed, as you might end up with a rather dull book. You soon become engrossed in some book or other, and usually it is only much later that you realize you have spend too much time there and must dash off to keep some forgotten appointment—without buying a book, of course. This opportunity to escape the realities of everyday life is, I think, the main attraction of a bookshop. There are not many places where it is possible to do this.A music shop is very much like a bookshop. You can wa nder round such places to your heart’s content. If it is a good shop, no assistant will approach you with the inevitable greeting: “can I help you, sir?” You needn’t buy anything you don’t want. In a bookshop an assistant should remain in the background until you have finished browsing. Then, and only then, are his services necessary. Of course, you may want to find out where a particular section is, but when he has led you there, the assistant should retire discreetly.16. You entered a bookshop perhaps because you are a book-lover or to go there to buy a book as apresent and even to ___________________________________________.17. According to the author, _______________________________________is the main attraction ofa bookshop.18. In a bookshop or a music shop, you can ___________________________________________.19. Where I come from in Southeast London, that’s an (26)_______________ profession. Anyone can break in a house and steal things, but picking somebody’s pocket takes skill. My sister and I were among the most successful pick pocket teams in London. We worked hotel and theatre lobbies, airports, shopping centers and restaurants. Now we don’t steal any more, but this crime is(27)_______________. Here’s how to protect yourself. Professional pickpockets do not see(28)_______________, only handbags, jewels and money. Mother with babies, the (29)_______________, the disabled are all fair game. My preferred target was the lone female, handbag at her side, the right side to be exact. So if I’m next to her, I can reach it (30)_______________ with my right hand across my body. Only about one woman in a thousand carries her bag on the left and I (31)_______________ steer clear of them. Women whose bags are hanging in front of them are tricky for the pickpocket as there isn’t a blind side. If you want to make it even harder, use a bag with 32)_______________rather than a strap. For men, one of the best places to keep a wallet is in the back pocket of tight trousers. Y ou’ll feel any(33)_______________ to move it. Another good place is in the buttoned-up inside pocket of a jacket. There’s just no way in. Even better, (34)_______________ to a cord or chain that is fastened to a belt. A pickpocket needs targets who are relaxed and off-guard. The perfect setting is a clothing store. When customers wander among the racks, they are completely absorbed in the items they (35)_______________. The presence of a uniformed security guard is even better. A false sense of security makes a pickpocket’s job much simpler.Part III Reading Comprehension (40 minutes)Section ADirections: In this section, there is a passage with ten blanks. Many are choosing bicycles to get around.Andy Clark, Executive Director of the League of American Bicyclists, an organization that promotes bicycling for fun, fitness and transportation, says that is good news for the (37)_______________.“It doesn’t burn fossil fuel and it doesn’t create dangerous emissions or pollutants and the numbers are there to back that up if people choose to ride (38)_______________driving, there are enormous benefits in all those areas,” Clark said. The (39)_______________are most dramatic on short trips. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, 50 percent of Americans commute five miles or less to work. However, a car engine’s catalytic converter - the device used to reduce the toxicity of emissions - needs to warm up before it can function (40)_______________, which is why shorter car trips pump more pollution into the air on a per-mile basis.“All of the (41)_______________that we would associate with car use: the pollution impacts, the climate impacts, don’t (42)_______________to a bicycle so there’s not that kind of environmental downside,”Gary Gardner said. Minnesota Congressman James Oberstar is Chairman of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure in the U.S. House of Representatives. He is a strong proponent of bicycle use. “We’re transforming the landscape,” Oberstar said. “Cities, counties, state governments, state highway transportation agencies are planning the roadways of the future and planning for bicycle facilities in dense urban areas creating bicycle(44)_______________along with bus lanes and setting aside well marked, well protected paths for bicycling in urban centers and between communities and establishing off-road bicycle paths”. As biking routes become more (45)_______________, Oberstar and others believe many more commuters will give up their cars and begin biking to work. (435 words)Section BDirections:In this section, you are going to read a passage with ten statements attached to it. Each statement contains information given in one of the paragraphs. Identify the paragraph from which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter. How to Write a Qualified Application LetterA) When you begin to write, your mind may give you random, disjointed thoughts. Y our ideas probably won’t come out logically or sequentially, but write them down as they appear, without worrying about order or logic. Don’t judge and evaluate, simply collect them. Later you’ll evaluate, sort, and organize them. At this stage you just want to get them down on paper, on tape, or on computer disk. It is easier for most people to write this way, because the creative part of your brain isn’t very logical, and the logical part of your brain isn’t very creative. Don’t expect your mind to pe rform both functions at once (although some can).B) Use the card trick to organize your thoughts. Sometimes it helps to put all your thoughts on individual index cards, exactly as they come to mind. Later, you can sort the cards to get a finished product, eliminating cards thatdon’t fit. This is also a beautiful way to write a magazine or journal article with very little stress--and very little writer’s block, because nothing you write down has to be said perfectly or accurately. Everything can be sharpened up later. Y our first goal is simply to collect your rough thoughts. Onc e you’ve accomplished that, here’s what to do next:C) 1. Spend time on your letter. Someone once said, with part-time effort, you get part-time results. This is especially true in letter writing. Y ou can expect to spend several hours, or even several days, on a letter. 2. Write a draft, and then let it cool off overnight. 3. Rewrite if necessary. 4. Use a strong close, like these: After you have had a chance to review this letter, I will call you to get your reactions. I will call your office next week to arrange a time when we might be able to get together. If you have any questions before that, please call me at (555) 771-4357.D) 5. A void weaker endings like these: Please call me at your earliest convenience. I believe that a meeting could prove to be mutually profitable, and ask that, if you agree, you contact me so that we can arrange a convenient time. Thank you for your consideration. I am available for a personal interview at your earliest convenience and look forward to hearing from you. In the next week or two when your schedule permits, let’s meet and discuss my aspirations in more detail. Please give me a call. I look forward to your reply.E) 6. Ask for opinions, advice, and feedback from friends, and from sales, marketing, and advertising experts. 7. Mail a small sample to test your letter. This is important. A consultant friend once mailed 76,000 brochures at a cost of nearly $15,000, and only got three responses. What a shame! The material was poorly written, badly designed, and poorly tested. Test your letters before you roll them out on a large scale. 8. If you’re getting the kind of response you want, mail larger numbers. 9. Enclose a response form to increase your response. 10. Remail the same letter to the same people two or three times. Repetition often helps. 11. Don’t mark letters Personal and Confidential, unless there’s a solid reason why they can’t be opened by a secretary. If the letter is persuasive enough, it will get through.Give yourself timeF) Y ou can’t expect to produce an exceptional document overnight. Letter-writing is actually harder than resume-writing because you’re starting with a clean slate. In resume-writing at least you have your background--which is definite--to work with. In letter writing, you start with nothing. Letters can be about anything. That’s why they’re so difficult. I once took a class called How to Market a Book. The class focused on writing query letters to publishers to get a book contract. The course lasted six weeks and met for two hours each week. I spent several hours per week on homework--staying up all night several nights--and the end product was a one-page sales letter to publishers. Lots of work for just one letter.G)I mailed the letter to about 30 publishers and got 13 responses. No one bought the book, but one publisher did offer to publish it for royalties only (no advance), which I declined. That book was the forerunner of this one. Writers often say, “I don’t like writing, but I like having written.” That’s how many of us feel. Writing can be hard work. Don’t take it lightly, and don’t feel bad if you can’t write a high-impact marketing letter in half an hour. Neither can professional copywriters! Writing is a profession, like rocket science. Don’t expect to learn or perfect it overnight.Don’t copy someone else’s letterH)Take these letters as samples and modify them to fit yourself, but don’t copy t hem verbatim(逐字地). I’ve found that people who copy someone else’s letter seldom get a good response, regardless of how good the letter is.Be original. It would be easy to take the letters in this collection and use them word-for-word. That would be quick, but probably not effective. Y our letter has to be you. It should sound like you, feel like you, read like you--because you have to follow it with a phone call, or answer questions about it. So, d on’t send a really hot, aggressive letter if you’re introver ted and laid-back. Y ou’ll have trouble following up on the letter and you may not come across well. Send a letter that mirrors your style--and only you can write that letter.Get professional helpI)If you’re a skilled writer, fine. The project may be easy for you. But if you’re not, you may need help. Consider hiring a professional freelance writer(自由撰稿人) to help you compose and edit your letters, but not to do them for you. Where can you begin to look? Call your local ad club for the names of direct mail freelance writers. Read the classifieds in Writer’s Digest. Check the Y ellow Pages under Writers. Contact your local writers’ guild. Check with local advertising and PR firms. They use lots of freelancers. Newspaper and magazine editors know writers too. (1039 words)46. Take your writing seriously if you want to write a qualified marketing letter in half an hour.47. It is necessary to polish your writing later, because the first writing is not perfect and accurate.48. Originality is an effective way to write a letter.49. Y ou are supposed to write your ideas down as soon as they popped into your mind.50. CV-writing is much easier than letter-writing because your personal information is definite.51. “Please give me a call at your convenience” is a weaker ending.52. Y ou can hire an expert to help you compose and edit your writing.53. There are two parts in your brain, but the functions they performed are different.54. Y our letter is likely to be read by a secretary.55. Card trick can help writers to organize their thoughts.Section CDirections:There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice.Passage OneQuestions 56 to 60 are based on the following passage. If you know exactly what you want, the best route to a job is to get specialized training. A recent survey shows that companies the graduates in such fields as business and health care who can go to work immediately with very little on-the-job training. That’s especially true of booing fields that are challenging for workers. At Cornell’s School of Hotel Administration, for example, bachelor’s degree graduates get an average of four or five job offers with salaries ranging from the high teens to the low 20s and plenty of chances for rapid advancement. Large companies, especially, like a background of formal education coupled with work experience. But in the long run, too much specialization doesn’t pay off. Business, which has been flooded with MBAs, no longer considers the degree an automatic stamp of approval. The MBA may open doors and command a higher salary initially, but the impact of a degree washes out after five years. As further evidence of the erosion(销蚀) of corporate (公司的) faith in specialized degrees, Michigan State’s Scheetz cites a pattern in corporate hiring practices, Although companies tend to take on specialists as new hires, they often seek out generalists for middle and upper-level management. “They want someone who isn’t constrained(限制)by nuts and bolts to look at the big picture,” says Scheetz. This sounds suspiciously like a formal statement that you approve of the liberal-arts graduate. Time andagain labor-market analysts mention a need for talents that liberal-arts majors are assumed to have: writing and communication skills, organizational skills, open-mindedness and adaptability, and the ability to analyze and solve problems, David Birch claims he does not hire anybody with an MBA or an engineering degree, “I hire only liberal-arts people because they have a less-than-canned way of doing things,” says Birch. Liberal-arts mean an academically thorough and strict program that includes literature, history, mathematics, economics, science, human behavior—plus a computer course or two. With that under your belt, you can feel free to specialize, “A liberal-arts degree coupled with an MBA or some other technical training is a very good combination in the marketplace,” says Scheetz. (363 words)56. What kinds of people are in high demand on the job market?A) Students with a bachelor's degree in humanities.B) People with an MBA degree front top universities.C) People with formal schooling plus work experience.D) People with special training in engineering57. By saying “…but the impact of a degree washes out after five years” (Line 3, Para. 3), the author means________.A) most MBA programs fail to provide students with a solid foundationB) an MBA degree does not help promotion to managerial positionsC) MBA programs will not be as popular in five years’ time as they are nowD) five people will forget about the degree the MBA graduates have got58. According to Scheetz’s statement (Lines 4-5. Para. 4), companies prefer ________.A) people who have a strategic mindB) people who are talented in fine artsC) people who are ambitious and aggressiveD) people who have received training in mechanics59. David Birch claims that he only hires liberal-arts people because ________.A) they are more capable of handling changing situationsB) they can stick to established ways of solving problemsC) they are thoroughly trained in a variety of specialized fieldsD) they have attended special programs in management60. Which of the following statements does the author support?A) Specialists are more expensive to hire than generalists.B) Formal schooling is less important than job training.C) On-the-job training is, in the long run, less costly.D) Generalists will outdo specialists in management.Passage TwoQuestions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage.Today’s students have grown up hearing more about Bill Gates than F. D. R., and they live in a world where amazing innovations are common. The current 18-year-olds, after all, were 8 when Google was founded by two students at Stanford; Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook in 2004 while he was at Harvard and they were entering high school. Having grown up digital, they are impatient to get on with life. The easiest way to find kids like these is to check in on entrepreneurship (企业家才能) education, in which colleges and universities try to prepare their students to recognize opportunities and seize them.A report published last year by the Kauffman Foundation, which finances programs to promote innovation on campuses, noted that more than 50,000 entrepreneurship programs are offered on two-and-four year campuses-up from just 250 courses in 1985. Lesa Mitchell, a Kauffman vice president, says that the foundation is extending thereach of its academic influence, which used to be found only in business schools. Now, the concept of entrepreneurship is blooming in engineering programs and medical school, and even in the liberal arts, “Our interest is the programs,” she says, “We need to spread out from the business school.”Either as class projects or on their own, students in a variety of majors are coming up with ideas, writing business plans and seeing them through to prototype and, often market. In their spare time, students in agricultural economics at Purdue invent new uses for bean; industrial design majors at Syracuse, in a special laboratory, create wearable technologies. The entrepreneurship movement has its critics, especially among those who see college as a time for extensive academic exploration. “I just don’t think that entrepreneurship ranks so high in terms of national need,” says Daniel S. Greenberg, author of Science for sale: The perils, Rewards and Delusions of Campus Capitalism.Leonard A. Schlesinger, Babson College’s president, says that the question of whether innovat ion can really be taught is “an age-old argument”.(335 words)61.When Google and Facebook were established, the founders were still .A) in high school B) in the armyC) in primary school D) at college62. In Africa, AIDS drugs may cost more than a person makes in one year. At the same time, some American hospitals throw away a lot of pills. One man, named Lee Wildes, didn't think this was fair, so he decided to do something about it.Wildes lives in a small apartment in San Francisco. Every month, he sends AIDS drugs, which would've been thrown away, to Africa. His act of kindness has not been noticed much in his home country. In Africa though, he is well known. Many people in Africa send him e-mails, asking him for the medicine they need.Lee was a nurse. He knows that millions of dollars worth of drugs are thrown away. Five years ago he learned he was sick with HIV. Following this discovery, he took a vacation to Africa and saw many people there with AIDS. His visit caused him to begin sending drugs to Africa.Lee talks with doctors in Africa by mail, e-mail and telephone. With their help, he has gotten the names and addresses for a hundred people in six African countries. He fills the pill orders and he records what pills he sends to them. He even returns to Africa, once a year, to see the people he's helping.Giving left over drugs away is against the law, as is giving out drugs without a license. However, it is not likely he'll be taken to court for his kindly efforts. People who have discovered his actions have not caused problems for him. They know that 25 million Africans are sick with AIDS, and they don't want to prevent him from helping.49. Why aren't more Africans taking AIDS drugs?A.
