Listening InTask 1: Weather ForecastingWe all know that it’s not possible for man to control the weather. But we can tell what important changes there will be in the weather in the short term. This is called weather forecasting. Many people rely on the weatherman to provide that information, but one method of weather forecasting is simply to use your eyes and brains. For example, if you see a rainbow in rainy weather in the evening, this is a sign that the weather will soon be clear and fine. Sometimes distant objects such as hills and tall trees seem to be very clear and near; this is a sign of much water vapor in the air, and then rain will probably come. If a fog appears just about sunrise in the morning, then the day will be arm. If the sunset is mostly red in color, then the following day will be fine. If the stars twinkle at night, then fine weather will come the next day.1.B2.D3.C4.A5.DTask 2: Wrong Weather ForecastM: Hey, Jane! Does everyone know what time to meet us this weekend for the picnic?W: Yeah. They’ll all be here at eleven sharp! I’ve invited Class 2 and 3 as well. We’ll be able to have a volleyball match, one class against another; that’ll be great fun.M: Did you check the weather? I hope it’s going to stay nice for the weekend; we can’t have a picnic in the rain.W: No worries! I watched the weather forecast last night, and the weatherman said it’s going to be fine—maybe a little cloudy, but DEFINITELY no rain!(next morning)M: There’s terrible weather! It’s raining buckets!W: There’s no way we can go out in that. Those weatherman are useless—I hope they had a picnic today too.M: I don’t know what’s happened to the weather these days. When I was little, we never had this much rain in the summer.W: I AGREE. And have you noticed that winter is warmer now as well? We always used to get snow in January. Now winter is more like spring!M: You’re telling me. I bet it’s all the pollution and the hole in the ozone layer that’s changing the weather.W: Oh, global warming and all that.M: I guess we’ll have to take a rain check on the picnic.1.They are planning to have their picnic on the weekend.2.They will be able to have a volleyball match, one class against another.3.It’ll be fine, and maybe a little cloudy, but there’ll be definitely no rain.4.Those weatherman are useless.5.All the pollution and the hole in the ozone layer are responsible for the changeable weather. Task 3: Global Climate ChangeToday, scientists have found that the greenhouse gases in the lower atmosphere have changed the global climate. These gases are largely due to human activities, such as the burning up of gas, coal and oil, and the destruction of forests. It is estimated that the average surface temperature of theearth will rise by 1.5-3.5℃by 2100. This rate of warming is significant. The oceans will heat up and glaciers will melt. As a result, the global average sea level is expected to rise by 15-95 cm by 2100. In that case all coastal cities will be at risk as a result of flooding and storm surges. Also, around the world weather events such as storms and floods will become more frequent and intense. Clearly, global climate change is becoming a great threat to our environment. So we must take effective measures to produce fewer greenhouse gases that cause it.Global climate is causes by the greenhouse gases in the lower atmosphere. These gases are largely due to the burning up of gas, coal and oil, and the destruction of forests. Scientists estimate that, by 2100, the average surface temperature of the earth will rise by 1.5-3.5℃and global average sea level will rise by 15-95 cm. All coastal cities will be at risk as a result of flooding and storm surges. Clearly, global climate change is becoming a great threat to our environment.Task 4: An AnnouncementFriday looks really good. Sunny all day with a daytime temperature of 70 degrees. But bundle up Friday night, as the temperature will drop sharply. On Saturday, it will be cold and cloudy in the morning with strong winds. In the afternoon, there’s a good chance of snow flurries, and the temperature will only reach 37degrees! On Sunday morning it will be cloudy, with some rain showers in the afternoon. I’m going to give a presentation tomorrow morning, and I haven’t read a word yet!Lisa: Come on, you shouldn’t leave everything till the last minute.Model 2 It’s terrible! Now Your TurnAshley: Wow! You could get blinded if you go outside.Katherine: The weather forecaster recommends staying indoors.Ashley: That’s the best we can do.Model 3 Take careNow Your TurnJames: How do you like my new motorcycle, Robert? Actually, most of Scotland is cols and often wet.I’m sure it’s the coldest part of the British Isles.Michael: Beijing is very cold in winter too, although it’s more of a dry cold, if you know what I mean. However, I like winter; it’s my favorite season. Summer is just too hot!Emma: Well ,I think you’re lucky to have a hot summer. Scotland’s summer is pretty miserable, wet and cold.Michael: Do you think people’s personalities are defined by the climate they live in?Emma: Well, that’s an interesting idea. I think there’s definitely something in it, because when the weather is hot, I easily lose my temper, but when it’s cooler, I feel much calmer. Michael: If it’s raining I always feel depressed. I cry along with the weather!Emma: Spring always makes me feel happy; the birds are singing and the whole atmosphere seems cheerful.Michael: Hmm, I agree. I think spring is my favorite season too.Emma: What about the winter blues? What are they?Michael: Well, that means you’re down in the dumps, because the weather’s so gloomy and cold. You feel all sad and blue! I often get them.Emma: Oh, I don’t. I love winter, but I suppose you could say I get the summer reds! I always see red in the hot weather and get into arguments and stuff.Michael: A,B,E,GEmma: c,d,f,hFor ReferenceAA, complain about the awful weather. What awful weather! It’s going to rain, I think.B, agree with A and complain about the weather forecast.I think so. Why did the weather forecast say it’s going to be fine today? They always make suchmistakes!A, promise you will never believe the weather forecast.Yeah. How can they be so stupid? I’ll never believe the forecast anymore!B, make a suggestion about what you do today.Forget about it. We can go to see a movie. What do you think?A, say what you think of B’s suggestion.OK, maybe we don’t have other choices.BA, complain about the hot weather.Ugh, I’ve had enough of these dog days. I am sweat all over.B, invite A to swim and take a sunbath. Why not go swimming and take a sunbath with me?A, say you are good at skiing but mot swimming.I am not a good swimmer. I wish I could go skiing in the North.B, persuade A to swim by promising to be his/her guide and lifeguard.Oh, come on. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. I’ll be your guide and lifeguard. Do come with me. Alright?A, give your response to the invitation. No, the sun burns your skin. I’d rather sit before an electric fan eating ice creams.VI. Furthering Listening and SpeakingTask 1: Dust StormsAmerican researchers say dust clouds from dry African deserts may be a threat to human health in the United States. The dust may contain many small organisms that could be dangerous. Each year, huge storms form in the Sahara desert of northern Africa. Winds carry the dust across the Atlantic Ocean. The movement of dust has been increasing in recent years because of longer periods settles in South America. From June to October, the winds change and transport the dust to North America, Central America and the Caribbean. More than half of the dust that reaches the United States settles in the sate of Florida. For many years, it has caused the skies there to turn red. There is probably a link between the dust storms and higher rates of allergies and breathing problems in people in this area.1. human health dust clouds2. the Sahara Atlantic Ocean South America3. October Central America the Caribbean4. the United States Florida the skies5. dust storms allergies breathing problemsTask 2: Mental Energy and SeasonYou may not believe that our mental energy varies from season to season. But some people think that it does. Research has shown that climate and temperature have a definite effect on our mental abilities. Scientists have discovered that cool weather is much more favorable for creative thinking than is summer heat. Spring spears to be the best period of the year for thinking. People seem to be a lot sharper in spring than they are in any other season. One reason may be that in spring people’s mental abilities are affected by the same factors that bring about great changes in nature. Fall is the next-best season, then sinter. Summer seems to be the best time to take a long vacation from thinking. This does not mean that all people are less intelligent in summer than they are during the rest of the year. It does mean, however, that the mental abilities of most people tend tobe lowest in summer. Be aware of these facts, and you will bring your talent into full play.1.F2.T3.F4.F5.TTask 3: Raining in My HeartThe sun id outThe sky is blueThere’s not a cloud to spoil the viewBut it’s rainingRaining in my heartThe weatherman says fine todayHe doesn’t know that you’ve gone awayAnd it’s rainingRaining in my heartOh misery, miseryOh what’s gonna become of me?I tell myselfMy blues won’t showBut I know that soon all my tears will flowCome a raining downRaining in my heart…。

Un4Wesley Austrey, 1)(50 / fifty)Whoyears old, a 2)(construction worker)What Wesley Austrey saved Cameron Hollopeter.Hollopeter 3)(fell)to the tracks between the two rails when a train came. Wesley 4)How(jumped onto)the tracks, lay on top of Hollopeter and 5)(pressed)him down.1.Yes, I think Wesley Austrey is a real hero because he showed unusual courage in times of danger. Few people would jump onto the tracks to save a stranger from a racing train. No, I don't think Wesley Austrey is a hero. He was behaving irresponsibly. He should have realized that he had two little children to take care of. What would his kids do if he died!2.I am most impressed by Wesley talking about his own fear and what he said to the stranger. From the report we can tell that Wesley loved his children and that he was fully aware of the danger he was facing. This further shows how caring and how courageous he was.I am most impressed when Wesley said, "I don't feel like I did something extraordinary; I just saw someone who needed help". This shows that Wesley is a warm-hearted and courageous person. When it is time for him to offer help, he just extends his hand. This is why when a stranger slipped off the platform, Wesley immediately jumped onto the tracks to save him, regardless of the extreme danger involved.3.I doubt if I would be courageous enough to jump onto the tracks to save the man.I would probably shout at the man, telling him to stay between the rails, lower his body, and keep his head down. And then I would ask the subway staff for help.Reference:1.Today both victims and survivors of all kinds of difficulties and tragedies are described as heroes.2.Because during a mass shooting in Tucson, Daniel Hernandez courageously ran through the danger to save one of the victims.3.The priest meant that Dory was a hero not just because he gave his life for his wife, but also because he had been known for his remarkable spirit and love of humanity when he was alive.4.First responders are people, such as police officers and firefighters, whose job is to rush toward danger. They are supposed to be the first to arrive at the scene of accidents and deal with emergencies.5.In the past, heroes were those who acted courageously beyond the call of dutyor great leaders, while today's heroes can be average men and women.6.Eleanor McMahon considered many police officers to be heroes because theyrush toward danger to help those in need, against the human instinct to rush toward safety and away from danger.7.The inspiring stories of heroes help remind us that ordinary people can do extraordinary things, whether it is to fulfill their duties, or as part of everyday life.8.We honor heroes by recognizing their heroism and, more importantly, byworking to change the circumstances that led to their death.Reference:1. In my view, a hero is someone who:is brave or even risks their lives in face of danger;saves others in trouble;shows great courage when others hesitate or fear;sacrifices themselves for others.2.Yes, people who give their lives for others should certainly be considered heroes, no matter whom they save –whether it is a family member or a stranger. By rescuing others, they demonstrate extraordinary courage and the rare qualities of a hero.3.Yes, I agree that "Heroism is latent in every human soul." I think everyone, kids or adults, men or women, wants to be a hero. Some want to be a hero because they want to be respected or loved by others; they would like to gain fame or attention. Some want to be a hero because they want to feel powerful for themselves. Still some others want to be a hero just because they want to help those in need, even by sacrificing their own interest, health or lives. No matter what motivates the hero, it is a glorious feeling when others look up to you as a hero.4.Yes, I think they should be regarded as heroes even though their efforts fail. They are heroes because they are brave and ready to sacrifice themselves for others. Their act and sacrifice will set a good example for other people, no matter whether their efforts have brought about desirable results or not. The most important thing is that they have tried while many other people would have neither the intention nor the courage to have a try.5.It is heroes who protect us from danger, and give us strength, comfort and confidence. To honor heroes, we should:spread their names and stories in legends, the media, songs, movies, etc.;put up monuments for commemoration;name places after them;set up a special day to remember them;take good care of them and their families;give them special honors; andcall on society to learn from them.1.Fortunately, the accident didn't(involve)many people, for there was little traffic at that hour.(fulfilled)her ambition of becoming a fashion designer after years of hard work.3.They kept on trying their best to develop their business, but in such(intense)market competition, they had no idea if success would come along one day. 4.As music plays an important role in our life, many music teachers andeducators (advocate)taking up a musical instrument at a young age.5.This rule should be entirely clear in the minds of everyone and should not be misunderstood under any(circumstances).6.My daughter was shy; she was afraid to ask questions,(respond)to questions in class, or talk with other children.7.I got from him only a letter, which was put on my office desk;(subsequent)to the receipt of this letter I have never heard from him.8.The duties to provide services for children in need are not(confined)to the local social services department.9.We pray that all nations be(reconciled)and that all people around the world live in peace.10.He suggested a small but(distinct)improvement on our former plan; I really appreciate it.agree 1)(agreeable)apply 2)(applicable)desire 3)(desirable)sustain 4)(sustainable)compare 5)(comparable)accept 6)(acceptance)attend 7)-ance(attendance)assist 8)(assistance)entertainment 9)(entertain)assignment10)-ment(assign)engage 11)(engagement)1.If you have difficulty finding a particular book, please ask one of the librariansfor (assistance).2.My recent experience is so different from your experience several decades ago that they are not(comparable).3.Few people knew that the famous writer was largely self-taught through broad reading and(attendance)at public lectures.4.They are planning to establish a new department which bases its teaching on the idea of direct(engagement)with students.5.His proposal sounds attractive, but unfortunately it is not(applicable)to the management problems of a small company.6.The young engineer has been working hard to fulfill thetask (assigned)to him by the director.7.Our program aims to help high-school graduates to find the best colleges for them and gain(acceptance)to the college of their choice.8.Good movies not only(entertain)us, but also help us understand a little more about life.9.He is delighted to find out that both his father and motherare (agreeable)to his studying abroad.10.We must take(sustainable)development into consideration when using the rich resources in our country.11.To do the job of the sales representative for our company, it is(desirable)that you know something about medicine as well as about the market. In January 2011, Daniel Hernandez saved congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords' life in a mass shooting in Tucson. He kept her alive by 1)(applying)pressure to her wounds and speaking 2)(tender)words of sympathy until medical people arrived. He was 3)(hailed)as a hero by the public. Although his devotion to public service is 4)(remarkable),in his bookThey Call Me a Hero: A Memoir of My Youth, Hernandez insists that heis not a hero.Hernandez said that he initially resisted the idea of writing a book abouthis experience on that day of enormous 5)(tragedy). Question:Some first responders do not succeed in helping others and they get injured or die in their efforts. Do these people become heroes because of what happens to them as they try to help others –instead of what they actually make happen (Para. 9)2. Example:Ms. McMahon was the founder of a cycling association. Her husband was a police officer who was killed in an off-duty bicycling accident. Ms. McMahon thought that Sgt. Russell was indeed a hero because he showed distinct courage when trying hard in a heavy snowstorm to stop the snowplow before it hurt others. She summed upthat it's natural for most people to rush toward safety and away from danger. Heroes, however, rush toward danger to help those in need. (Paras. 10-11)3. Conclusion:We expect first responders to rush forward in times of danger. So when they die doing that, we should recognize their heroic action even though we ourselves may not be that brave. (Para. 12)Reference:Where does happiness come from Ann was a fulltime worker with a low income, but she devoted a lot of her time to helping people in her community. One day, Ann was diagnosed with a severe heart disease, but she did not have enough money for treatment. When people in her community heard the news, they raised money for her and helped take care of her children. Although Ann was very sick, she felt very happy. She had enjoyed helping other people, who now in turn were happy to help her. Happiness is indeed the result of helping each other.1.November.2.In the Dalton River.3.Jonda.4.Sandy.1.Why did Jonda's pulse quicken while she was driving?A.Because the weather was terrible.?B.Because the car ahead was in trouble.?C.Because the car ahead was blocking her view.?D.Because the road was dangerous with many bends. 2.Why did Jonda fail to save the teenager many years ago?A.Because she was too terrified to take any action.?B.Because she was pulled back by some other people.?C.Because the road was too slippery to move forward.?D.Because the car was on fire and she could not get near it.3.After she failed to save the teenager, Jonda ____.?A.tried hard to avoid dealing with similar accidents?B.decided to receive training to become more capable?C.became very sensitive to signs of potential accidents?D.tried to get rid of the memories of the teenager's accident 4.What caused the car ahead of Jonda to slip into the Dalton River ?A.The car did not slow down.?B.The car had a braking problem.?C.The car was barely within the lane.?D.The car failed to stop at the warning sign.5. Although it is the duty of police officers to save victims in accidents, they should not be blamed for failing to save the victims on some occasions. It would be unfair to blame them as situations may become out of their control. Sometimes they themselves may get injured or even die in their efforts to save those in danger. So in this sense, they may fail to save victims, but they are still heroes and are respectable.2.Helping others surely has its benefits. When we help others, we can derive a feeling of happiness and a sense of fulfillment. We will earn respect from other people. Besides, by helping others, we set an example for others who, in turn, will help even more people. If we extend a helping hand whenever necessary, we will help build a more friendly and harmonious world.3.I think it depends on the situation. If you know your sacrifice will save another person's life, it is undoubtedly worthwhile even if you have to risk your own life. Nonetheless, if you clearly know that your efforts won't save them even at the cost of your own life, then it is not a good idea to give up your own life. Maybe a better and more practical way is to ask more people for help. This way, you will not only save the victim, but also avoid unnecessary casualties.1.A heavy flood caused the bridge to(collapse); now, no one can cross the river without boats.2.Susan has been crying a lot since her sister died a year ago; it seems that she could never(heal)from the heavy loss.3.It's sometimes considered bad manners to(lean)on the table while eating, so please be careful not to do so.4.After crying for some time, she looked at herface (reflected)in the mirror, only to find she was such a sad and plain-looking girl.5.I had to hold tightly the handrails ( 扶手 ) along the hall to keep myself from losing my balance on the(slippery)floor.6.The man phoned the police and later went to the police station to look at photos to(identify)the robbers.7.The imperial examination system, which started in the Sui Dynasty, was (abolished)in 1905.8.Many smokers choose to(ignore)the fact that smoking is harmful to health and refuse to stop smoking.9.He no longer had a(n)(aspiration)for further education because he thought the costs were too high.10.Although she often seemed quite cold and strict, her smilingeyes (betrayed)her true nature.1.Almost everybody needs someone to 1)(lean on)in times of trouble. 2. 5. To sample widely and challenge myself, I am going to
venture out of my comfort zone and do what I have not had the courage to do. For instance, I will make friends with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. I will take a swimming class and learn how to swim. I will attend lectures, join student clubs, and try all kinds of food. Most of all, I will do whatever it takes to make the most of the four years and try to become a well-rounded graduate.
2. 4. Nowadays education is getting more and more expensive,
especially college education. And there are people who choose to give up education because of the high cost. But without education, one would not be able to acquire knowledge that an education will offer. In other words, they would be "ignorant". The result would be that "ignorant" people will suffer even more or pay even more for being so. It is true that education is expensive, but if you try "ignorance", the cost would be even higher.
