Lydia is Korean, and her family moved to our city so her husband could go to graduate school. We started talking, and she was apologetic about how bad her English was, but I didn't care. I knew how hard it was to learn a second language. I enjoyed chatting with Lydia as we watched our kids play.It was what came next that challenged me: Lydia asked if I'd be willing to help her with her English. Now, I am not a teacher. I admire teachers, and I'm grateful for teachers, and it's because I admire what they do so much that I was very very sure that I couldn't do it myself. But Lydia was sure that she wanted my help. I was doubtful. I wasn't sure my "help" was even worth being called by that name. But because she asked me, I said "yes." And that was the beginning of a friendship. Lydia and I spent afternoons sitting together and reading the newspaper, and as we did, she asked me questions when she had them questions about language, yes, but also questions about the new culture she found herself in. In turn, I asked my own questions, growing curious about her home country and culture. We bonded over our shared faith and our struggles as mothers of kids with special needs, When I complimented(恭维) her cooking, she began to teach me about Korean food, eventually leading to a shared trip to explore the Korean grocery stores in our city. Because of Lydia, 1 learned more about my own hometown than I ever could have learned by myself. I'm still not sure that I'm any good as a teacher. But I'm grateful I said "yes" when my neighbor asked me to help her with her English. That meant spending extra time with my neighbor, and that extra time meant she didn't remain just my neighbor. She became my friend.(1)What was Lydia sorry about?A. Her bad English.B. Her carelessness.C. Nobody teaching her English.D. Her poor life in a new place.(2)What can be concluded from the third paragraph?A. The author admired teachers.B. The author wanted to be a teacher.C. The author didn't want to help Lydia.D. The author was not confident in helping Lydia.(3)Why was the author grateful at the last paragraph?A. She managed to learn English well.B. She made friends with her neighbor.C. To help others is to help ourselves.D. Where there is a will, there is a way.【答案】(1)A(2)D(3)B(4)C【解析】【分析】本文是一篇记叙文,作者在帮助新搬来的邻居学习英语时,感受到了快乐和收获,并且和邻居成为了好朋友。

He wanted to meet me because I was a gold-medal power lifter, and I knew about overcoming obstacles and going for my dreams.I spent over one hour talking to Matthew. Never once did he complain or ask, “Why me?” He spoke about winning and succeeding and going for his dreams. Obviously, he knew what he was talking about. He didn’t mention that his classmates had made fun of him because he was different. He stirred Maggie’s anger, however, so that she often said to her husband, “It’s a mercy that brother ofyours doesn’t come oftener.”In fact James came once a year, unexpectedly, around eight o’clock in the evening, and he stayed for six hours of close discussion with his brother. His arrival was a signal to the children that their bedtime would be delayed. Not that he ever spoke to them or played with them. He took no notice of them, as if he was unable to see children, at least until the time came for him to go. Indeed, after his first greeting and a careless kiss, James took no notice of Maggie either, except to add, “You’ll be getting on with the supper, Maggie.” Such was his regard for her.Maggie paid him back in her own way. She kept the children up, the four of them, to keep her company, she said, but of course they sang and made a noise and broke the endless sound of James’ voice. Her father did not want the children to go to school with the village children and for once her mother agreed with him. And after I had read out a little test piece, he said, “That’s fine, wonderful, your voice is perfect, lively, wonderful.” Then I read a longer passage in English about the delights of touring in Britain, and another about the delights of visiting London, and both were “excellent” and “just right”, and I began to consider a job in radio. To be honest, I was fairly sure of myself though I lacked experience. Across the room in the Hamburg News Agency where we both worked, a friend named Peter Turner called to me, “I say, Mike, a man on the phone here wants someone to do a recording in English, and I’ m booked up. Would you read something to him in English as a sort of test?” I did, and they said, “Perfect, lovely, wonderful, …” Would I come round? It was after reading their passage in English in the studio that they noticed my vowel(元音) pronunciations were not altogether King’s English, or even Prince Philip’s, there was a larger silence than usual, then the voice said: “Fine, lovely…, but you said the word ‘castle’ with a short ‘a’. Could we have the passage again please, but this time say ‘castle’.” This was easy. But then he noticed other differences in my pronunciation. “It’s my northern English accent,” I said angrily because I had to apologize for it.“Oh, I see…but Mike, we’ll have to get it right, I’m afraid. The recording is for teaching English to German schoolchildren, and it must be spoken in the way it is taught in German schools.”I read the passage again…and again…and again. But of course you cannot change the pronunciation of a lifetime in an hour. The studio men were in the state of having lost hope and underlined the vowels which caused me to feel angry, so that I’d remember them. Few, really. But because I had to concentrate(集中) on them, I made a lot of mistakes in my reading. Everyone got somewhat irritable(easily made angry), so we all went out for a beer.1. Broadcasting did not make Mike nervous _______.A. although he had never done any beforeB. because he worked in a news agencyC. because he was used to talking on the phoneD. although the passages were long2. But the number of American students studying in Britain and Australia descended a little, even as the number of American students abroad rose by 8%. The growth came in non-English speaking European countries and in Asia. China is now the eighth most popular destination for American students, attracting nearly 6,400 in 2005, up 35% from the number of the year before. Argentina and India saw increases of more than 50%.Allan Goodman, president of the Institute of International Education, said that a range of factors contributed to the trend, from growing awareness of globalization after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, to programs such as former President Bush's National Security Language Initiative, which trains soldiers, intelligence officers and diplomats in foreign languages. “What Americans are doing is waking up and discovering there's a world out there,” he said.Other figures showed the flow of students in the opposite direction, from foreign countries into American universities. The institute found that international enrollment (入学) in American higher education remained steady at about 565,000. The figures are of keen interest to universities, which depend on foreign students for teaching and research help, and to policy-makers, who consider it important, as future foreign leaders may be familiar with the United States. The year of 2005 saw big increases in students from South Korea, Mexico and Taiwan of China. India sends the most students and China is No.2. The other day I was shopping at the local Chinese grocery store. There was a line at the fish counter, but only one staff person was there to take care of the customers. Some customers ordered quite an amount of fish for that staff person to work on. At last I was the second in line. All I wanted was a couple of crabs and should get out of there in no time.Noticing it was very busy at the fish counter, another staff person came over to help. I was ready to be served, but the staff person went to the end of the line and began to help a couple of ladies with snail (蜗牛). The customers in front of me, being served, turned around and looked at me sympathetically and the customer behind me called to the staff person, “You should star t here,” pointing at me. He was, well, ignored. If someone asked me, "What is the most important rule to follow in America?" I would reply without hesitation. "Wait your turn at all times." Wherever you go here in this country, you will find people waiting in a line quietly to get anything: whether in the supermarkets, department stores, bus stops, or gas stations, it's just a matter of waiting your turn. In a larger sense, "wait your turn" is more than just a guideline — it is a very basic rule that reflects the fundamental value of the western cultures. But in some situations your turn does not always come based on when you get there and how long you have waited in line, just like my case at the store. Even though this did not often happen, it did make me feel upset.(1)What happened to the author at the store?A.He was ill-treated by a customer.B.He wasn't served upon his order.C.He was asked to be served later.D.He was asked to do others a favor.(2)What does the underlined word "this" in the last paragraph refer to?A.His belief.B.His culture.C.His experience.D.His rule.(3)Why did the author write the text?A.To emphasize his kindness to others.B.To introduce some western cultures to us.C.To express his belief and his feeling.D.To show his disbelief in Queuing Rule.【答案】(1)B(2)C(3)C【解析】【分析】本文是一篇记叙文,讲述了作者在买螃蟹时排队很久,受到不公平待遇的经历,借此表现了西方文化的特点——要遵守次序,同时也表明了作者的感受和建议。

Nothing good generally comes of a conversation that start with the words, "I think you should probably sit down before I tell you this.”And so it came to pass. Away for Christmas, we got a call from kind friends at home, our neighbour's house had caught fire while they were out. The fire didn't spread to our house but the smoke very much did. It's weeks of either throwing out, or sending away for specialist cleaning, every single thing into which smoke could have permeated(渗透)because the particles(微粒) are an ongoing health risk and washing isn't enough. Anything soft—sofas and carpets and children's teddy bears, clothes—is suspected. We will be seeing in the New Year in a decidedly minimalist fashion. What I didn't expect to feel, however, is this lucky. Friends and neighbours have come together with incredible generosity. We will never again underestimate the closeness of the village community in which we live, or the innate kindness that is most people's natural reaction to trouble, and are grateful to be reminded of so much that is good. But that's not the only thing I've learned. For in a sense, we have a chance to start again. The surprise on being forced to think about what might urgently need replacing is how short the list of essentials seems; how much we must have been hanging on to out of habit, and how much we have been conditioned to think was important. It's all too easily assumed that family history lives in tangible(有形的)things— old photographs, a dress bought decades ago for a night heavy with memories — but that's not quite right. These things were only reminders of what we already carry with us in head and heart.Walking through the house, sweeping up the broken glass, I realised that the answer to the old question of "What would you save in a fire? " is actually that nothing really matters but each other.(1)What happened to the author's house?A.It caught a fire.B.It was affected by a fire.C.It was broken into by friends.D.Its windows were broken.(2)What does the underlined word "suspected" in Paragraph 3 refer to?A.something that may be damaged.B.something that may not be genuine.C.something that may not be so good.D.something that may be dangerous.(3)What did the author expect to feel?A.People around him were cold to others' trouble.B.His friends and neighbours were so generous.C.People in his community were close to each other.D.He was so lucky to find much that was good.(4)How will the author probably feel when the New Year finally comes?A.Worried.B.Surprised.C.Excited.D.Contented.【答案】(1)B(2)A(3)A(4)D【解析】【分析】本文是一篇记叙文,作者家房子受到火灾影响,物品受损,一切都需要清理,但朋友们和邻居们提供的帮助,让作者感受到了他们的善良,对他们感恩。

Scientists at the University of California Berkeley, US, announced on February 27 that rich people are more likely to do immoral things, such as lie or cheat, than poorer people. The scientists did a series of eight experiments. They published their findings online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNA《美国国家科学院院刊》).They carried out the first two experiments from the sidewalk near Berkeley. They noted that drivers of newer and more expensive cars were more likely to cut off other cars and pedestrians at crosswalks. Nearly 45 percent of people driving expensive ears ignored a pedestrian compared with only 30 percent of people driving mow modest cars.In another experiment, a group of college students was asked if they would do immoral things in various everyday situations. Examples included taking printer paper from work and not telling a salesperson when he or she gave back more change. Students from higher — class families were more likely to act dishonestly.According to the scientists, rich people often think money can get them out of trouble. This makes them less afraid to take risks. It also means they care less about other people's feelings. Finally, it just makes them greedier. “Higher wealth status seems to make you want even more, and that increased want leads you to bend the rules or break the rules to serve your self- interest,” said Paul Piff, lead scientist of the study.Piff pointed out that the findings don't mean that all rich people are untrustworthy or all poor people honest. He said the experiments were to show how people living in different social situations express their instincts(本能)and values in different ways.(1)By saying “money is the root of all evil”, the author wants to .A. link wealth with bad behaviorB. draw readers' attention to the researchC. show how the saying proves the findingsD. defend rich people who do immoral things (2)According to the scientists, which is NOT the factor that makes rich people immoral?A. It's a common belief that the roles actors play might somehow reflect their true personalities. It's usually not true, but British actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge, 34, is an exception.Just like Fleabag, the character she played in the comedy-drama series of the same name, Waller-Bridge feels that her life is a mess. "It's just really wonderful to know that a dirty and messed up woman can make it to the Emmys," she said. She may be "messed up", but Variety magazine calls her an "all-around icon".Last month, Waller-Bridge took home three Emmy awards for her work on Fleabag —best writing in a comedy series, best lead actress, and best comedy series. Her success is partly because of her family. Waller-Bridge was brought up in a free environment. Her mother always told her, "You can be whatever you want if you imagine it." So Waller-Bridge broke all the rules about what a "good" girl should do. "Our laws and moral codes don't apply —she lives without fear of consequence," The Sun noted. That fearlessness extends to being authentic (真实的) in her writing and acting. Unlike the can-do heroines and strong, successful women in many TV dramas, Waller-Bridge shows a flawed but real character. The character Fleabag was a screw-up who always found a way to say or do the wrong thing. "It resonated with the lives of stressed-out women everywhere in reality — doing their best to find balance in their lives," a viewer wrote on US movie website.Villanelle in Killing Eve, another hit TV series developed by Waller-Bridge, was a little bit violent but showed no interest for the rules others created, which make many people see themselves in her."People have been scared to write characters like these. But I think, now, women are so relieved to have this new template (样板). And, aren't we all a bit of everything?" Waller-Bridge said in an interview with Indian Express. With such courage and sincerity, Waller-Bridge is, without a doubt, a "golden girl" in Hollywood, Australian news website The New Daily commented.(1)What is the article mainly about?A.What helped Waller-Bridge succeed in comedy.B.The popularity of the comedy-drama series Fleabag.C.What inspired Waller-Bridge to take up writing and acting.D.The similarities between Phoebe Waller-Bridge and the character she plays on Fleabag.(2)How did Waller-Bridge's parents influence her growth?A.They pushed her to follow social codes.B.They constantly encouraged her to be herself.C.They always reminded her to be curious and fearless.D.They taught her to write and act when she was young.(3)The underlined phrase "resonated with" in Paragraph 7 probably means "__________".A.messed upB.paid attention toC.had great effects onD.was in agreement with(4)What do Villanelle in Killing Eve and Fleabag in Fleabag have in common?A.Both are courageous and organized.B.Both are much alike in character.C.Both successfully find balance in their lives.D.Both are rebellious but strong and successful.【答案】(1)A(2)B(3)D(4)B【解析】【分析】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了喜剧演员沃勒·布里奇,因其真诚的个性特点在喜剧上获得了成功,说明了勇于表达真实的自己更为人们欣赏。

Until recently, I was not a "real" stepmother either. But I have been living with the man who is now my husband, Bernardo for 10 years and in those 10 years, not only have his younger daughters spent every other weekend and half of their school holiday with us but also his son has lived with us full-time. In fact, when Bernardo asked me to move in, he asked his son for permission first.Being a step mum is hard enough but being a sort-of-step-mother is about the most awkward position a mature woman can find herself in. With my sort-of-steppies, I have occupied a place of influence, power and sometimes extreme anger by turns. I have stepped on a delicate path between being a grown-up friend, a bridge of influence with their father, the woman of the house, and a figure of authority – but not too much.Love the kids or hate them, you must always remember that no matter how much you cook, clean, hug, comfort and discipline, you will never actually count. To survive, I trained myself to love the stepkids as hard as I could, but not to care. It's a handy piece of good mental health trickery I recommend to anyone in my position. I can help with homework, yes, but not bother about the results of that homework. I can teach them good manners, but not care about the bad habits they learn at home. Semi-detached is the position.(1)Which of the following is true about Bernardo?A. Bernardo seldom cares about the kids.B. Bernardo dislikes living with his kids.C. Bernardo respects the opinion of his kids.D. Bernardo doesn't recognize his wife as a "real" stepmother.(2)What does the author think of her role in the family?A. She was totally favored by the kids.B. She has acted as an enemy of the kids.C. She didn't have any influence in the family.D. She was the communication bridge between kids and their father.(3)What's the author's advice for stepmothers in the last paragraph?A. Be partly engaged in kids' life.B. Care little about kids' behavior.C. Seldom get involved in kids' homework.D. Become the absolute authority of the family.【答案】(1)C(2)D(3)A【解析】【分析】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了作为一个继母应该如何与孩子相处才是一个适当的度。

By now you've probably heard about the "you're not special" speech, when English teacher David McCullough told graduating seniors at Wellesley High School: "Do not get the idea you're anything special, because you're not." Mothers and fathers present at the ceremony 一and a whole lot of other parents across the Internet — took issue with McCullough's ego-puncturing (伤自尊的) words. But lost in the uproar (喧嚣)was something we really should be taking to heart: our young people actually have no idea whether they're particularly talented or accomplished or not. In our eagerness to elevate their self-esteem, we forgot to teach them how to realistically assess their own abilities, a crucial requirement for getting better at anything from math to music to sports. In fact, it's not just privileged high-school students: we all tend to view ourselves as above average.Such inflated self-judgments have been found in study after study and it's often exactly when we're least competent at a given task that we rate our performance most generously, in a 2006 study published in the journal Medical Education, for example, medical students who scored the lowest on an essay test were the most charitable in their self evaluations, while high-scoring students judged themselves much more strictly. Poor students, the authors note, "lack insight" into their own inadequacy. Why should this be? Another study, led by Cornell University psychologist David Dunning, offers an enlightening explanation. People who are incompetent, he writes with coauthor Justin Kruger, suffer from a “dual burden": they're not good at what they do, and their very clumsiness prevents them from recognizing how bad they are.In Dunning and Kruger's study, subjects scoring at the bottom on tests of logic, grammar and humor -extremely overestimated'' their talents. Although their test scores put them in the 12th percentile (百分位数) they guessed they were in the 62nd. What these individuals lacked (in addition 9 clear logic, proper grammar and a sense of humor) was "meta cognitive skill" the capacity to monitor how well they're performing. In the absence of that capacity, the subjects arrived at an overly hopeful view of their own abilities. There's a paradox here, the authors note: The skills that lead to competence in a particular domain are often the very same skills necessary to evaluate competence in that field? In other words, to get better at judging how well we're doing at an activity, we have to get better at the activity itself. There are a couple of ways out of this double bind. First, we can learn to make honest comparisons with others. Train yourself to recognize excellence, even when you yourself don't possess it, and compare what you can do against what truly excellent individuals are able to accomplish. Second, seek out feedback that is frequent, accurate and specific. Find a critic who will tell you not only how poorly you're doing, but just what it is that you're doing wrong. As Dunning and Kruger note, success indicates to us that everything went right, but failure is more ambiguous: any number of things could have gone wrong. Use this external feedback to figure out exactly where and when you screwed up.If we adopt these strategies — and most importantly, teach them to our children — they won't need parents, or a commencement (毕业典礼)speaker, to tell them that they're special. They'llalready know that they are, or have a plan to get that way.(1)The author thinks the real problem is that .A.no requirement is set up for young people to get betterB.we always tend to consider ourselves to be privilegedC.we don't know whether our young people are talented or notD.young people don't know how to assess their abilities realistically(2)We can infer from the passage that those high-scoring studentsA.know how to cultivate clear logic and proper grammarB.tend to be very competent in their high-scoring fieldsC.don't view themselves as competent because they know their limitsD.don't know how well they perform due to their strict self-judgement(3)The strategies of becoming special suggest that .A.we need internal honesty with ourselves and external honesty from othersB.the best way to get better is to carefully study past success and failureC.through comparison with others, one will know where and when he failsD.neither parents nor a commencement speaker can tell whether one is special(4)Which can be the best title of this passage?A.Tip On Making Ourselves More SpecialB.Let's Admit That We Are Not That SpecialC.Special or Not? 浙江省金华市方格外国语学校高考英语阅读理解常考题型汇总 1 主旨归纳题顾名思义,主旨归纳题主要考察同学们对文章内容以及段落大意的总体掌握。

主旨归纳题目常见的形式有:1. What is the text mainly about?2. What does the passage mainly talk about?3. What could be the best title of the passage?4. What does the last paragraph talk about?

Modern America was born on the road, behind a wheel. (主题句)The car shaped some of the most lasting aspects of American culture: the roadside diner, the billboard, the motel, even the hamburger. For most of the last century, the car represented what it meant to be American—going forward at high speed to find new worlds.Time is money, but that principle means different things for different types of restaurants. (主题句) Unlike fast-food places. fine dining shops prefer customers to stay longer and spend.Music is nice, people seem to say, but not important. Too often it is viewed as mere entertainment, but certainly not an education priority (优先).

1. The underlined word/phrase in the first paragraph means?2. The word “it” in the first sentence refers to_____?3. Which of the following is closet in meaning to the word “crept”具体的解题思路如下:① 根据同义词和反义词猜词这个方法尤其适用于and或者or连接的词组,例如happiness and sorrow,我们不认识sorrow 这个词,但是根据happiness可以猜测,这个词的意思是“悲伤”。

As she got close, she saw the thief, she jumped out of the bed, opened the door and crept towards a dark shadow.。

题干要求找出crept的同义词,选项为moved slowly, rushed out, threw away, got up.

1. All the following are mentioned except2.Which of the following is mentioned (not mentioned)?3.Which of the following statements is true/right/false/wrong about…?

1. It can be inferred/ concluded from the text that __________.2. The author implies/ suggests that_____.3. We may infer that _________.

1. decide to do sth.2. make a decision to do sth.3. determine to do sth.4. be determined to do sth.5. make a determination to do sth6. resolve to do sth.7. make a resolution to do sth.8. make up one’s mind to do sth.9. set one’s mind to do sth.

Eg. Some huge American industries, such as consumer electronics, had shrunk or vanished in the face of foreign competition.

Eg. Enterprise Co., Ltd或者I invited Tom, Jerry, etc..

Eg. We live in a society in which the medicinal and social use of substances(Drugs) is pervasive : an aspirin to quiet a headache, some wine to be sociable, coffee to get going in the morning, a cigarette for the nerves.
