These storms go around like a wheel(轮⼦)turning to the left. They have wind speeds of 60 kph or more. They can be very destructive (毁灭性的). In the United States, the Tropical Prediction Centre in Miami, Florida, looks out for hurricanes. When scientists discover a true hurricane, they give it a name. They can use either a man's or woman's name. Why should hurricanes have names? The names make it easier for people to keep up with information about a hurricane and its dangers. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), an international weather group, decides what names will be used. The WMO makes six lists (列表)of names, using the English alphabet. Each list is used for one year. When a hurricane happens, it gets the next name on the list for that year. For example, the first hurricane of the year might have the name Abel, while the second one could be Betty. The name lists do not include (包含)names beginning with the letters O, U, X, Y, and Z, since there are few names that begin with these letters. Asian countries use a different list. A VJ (video jockey) is a person who introduces music videos on television.VJs were first seen on television in the early 1980s when MTV went on the air. As MTV became popular and the audience for music videos increased, different kinds of music video channels started broadcasting. By the 1990s, international music video channels like Channel V in Asia and VIV A in Europe had started. The VJs for the new international stations had to be chosen carefully. Although some VJs showed mostly local content (本地内容), other VJs presented shows for international viewers (电视观众). These VJs, and the material (素材)they presented, needed to be popular in several different cultures. One successful international VJ in Asia is Asha Gill. She is from Malaysia, but her parents and grandparents are from India, France, and England. (1)Every year, tens of thousands of Chinese middle school students go to foreign countries for further study. The popular destinations are America, Britain, Australia, Japan and Canada. Chinese children hope a lot to go abroad to get a wider view of the world. However, life in foreign countries is a big challenge for them, because they will meet a culture shock and language problems.Amy Lee, a 15-year-old student from Shenzhen, began to study in a senior high school in Vancouver, Canada, in January. To her surprise, her teachers there never force students to study. And there isn’t much homework. Because of the different education system, students there have more free time and more space for thinking. However, as Chinese students, we must spend our time and money properly, or we won’t have an easy time. For example, some of Amy’s Chinese friends spent their whole year’s money in the first three months of the term. What’s worse, th ey didn’t pass their exams.Without doubt, studying abroad at a young age can help students learn foreign languages quickly and it can enrich their minds, but they should also know about the challenges. ‘Make sure that you are well prepared if y ou decide t o study abroad,’Amy said.( ) 1.What’s the main idea of the third paragraph?A.Many Chinese students get further study in foreign countries.B.Chinese students don’t have an easy time in foreign countries.C.Chinese students always fail their exams in foreign countries.D.There are differences between studying at home andstudying abroad.( ) 2. In fact, everyone has the power to change their living habits to help reduce it. Many local governments call on their people to take action to make the air cleaner.Transport is one of the biggest contributors(促成物)to haze. When, where, how, why and what you drive all affect air quality. When one drives to work for one year,he uses as mush energy as a bus rider uses in 10 years. So walk or ride your bicycle to work or school whenever possible. If it is necessary, you can use public transport instead of your car. Each person using public transport for a year instead of a car can save nearly a ton of pollutants, including CO2,from going into the atmosphere.Carpooling is another way to reduce carbon emissions(排放).Carpooling is the sharing of car journeys so that more than one person travels in a car. It immediately reduces your car’s emissions by half. What you do inside your living space can have a big effect on the air quality outside it. You can do a lot of things inside and around your home that will help you pollute less and save some money.A large amount of our energy comes from burning coal, another contributor to haze. By cutting down your electricity use,you are cutting down on haze. So you may try to reduce your use of electricity by turning off lights, using your air conditioner wisely during the summer months,or updating(更新)some of your electrical appliances(家电) to low-energy models. For example, you can use energy-saving lamps that need less energy and last 10 times longer than common bulbs.( )4.We can infer from the passage that the writer thinks_______________.A. cars can be used only when people have toB. cars should be given up as soon as possibleC. cars must be improved to reduce air pollutionD. cars may cause the most serious pollution of all( ) 5. In English-speaking countries, it is common for people to start a conversation with somebody they don’t kno w when they are together in certain situations (情景) such as at the bus stop , on a rainy day or in a long line waiting to buy tickets. And emergencies(突发事件) make people talk —have you ever been in an elevator(电梯) when it stopped and the lights went out?‘Small talk’ is a special language. It is usually a question, and often uses a question tag. We say things like ‘You’re in my maths class, aren’t you?’ Or ‘I wish the bus would come. What about you?’. Small talk helps us pass the time happily and in the dark elevator we might talk to the person stuck (被困) there with us , then we won’t feel so scared!( )1. Animals use languages like humans.( )2. Every year, tens of thousands of Chinese middle school students go to foreign countries for further study. The popular destinations are America, Britain, Australia, Japan and Canada. Chinese children hope a lot to go abroad to get a wider view of the world. However, life in foreign countries is a big challenge for them, because they will meet a culture shock and language problems.
Amy Lee, a 15-year-old student from Shenzhen, began to study in a senior high school in Vancouver, Canada, in January. What’s worse, they didn’t pass their exams.
Transport is one of the biggest contributors(促成物)to haze. When, where, how, why and what you drive all affect air quality. When one drives to work for one year,he uses as mush energy as a bus rider uses in 10 years. So walk or ride your bicycle to work or school whenever possible. If it is necessary, you can use public transport instead of your car. Each person using public transport for a year instead of a car can save nearly a ton of pollutants, including CO2,from going into the atmosphere.
