About Books
About BooksWe are accompanied by books since we embarked on the journey of study, and frequently we are inculcated with the cliche that one never feels lonely who is constantly with the company of books. Alas what an irony and shame that we are buried in piles of books but know not what is a book and how to read a book, we seem to be totally lost in books. The Oxford English-Chinese Dictionary defines that a "book" is a written work that is published as printed pages fastened together inside a cover or in electronic form, a general definition of a book. So all kinds of "books" dazzle us! books with hard covers, with paper covers, with blondes lying on the covers or just blank covers;books that look classic, that look modern… M ore than one say or imagine! However, different people have different opinions about a book. In his About Reading Books, John Ruskin views that a book is written not to multiply the voice merely, nor to carry it merely, but to perpetuate it. The author has something to say which he perceives to be true and useful or helpfully useful. so far as he knows , no one has yet said it; so far as he knows, no one else can say it. He is bound to say it, clearly and melodiously if he may…So, a book is the original and unique thought of the author who is bound to write it down. One morning one of my roommates looked rather serious, so I askedwhether he was ill, he gave me a quite funny and surprising answer: I feel something choked me inside, I have to write something to release it, just like a hen that is bursting to lay her egg. He shares something with John Ruskin, namely the need from the inside to write something which is essential to write. Personally my view chimes in with the second definition about a book. A real book is the record of the author's unique thoughts that last. Now we can pose these questions: is the pamphlet a book? How about the magazine? How we classify books? Or what is the criterion when we classify books? At the beginning of About Reading Books ,John Ruskin divides all the books into two classes: books of the hour and books of all the time. books of the hour are those that are only popular for the time being ,such as some entertaining or gossip magazines, news papers and some guide books which we read over tea or at bedtime for entertainment or keeping track of the current affairs or just to be in fashion. Books of all the time are those that stand against the baptism of times and survive the selection of readers and critics;are those, like gold mines bury treasures among themselves waiting for the reader to discover them; are those that is an epitome of a certain society or times, when reading these books, we are just traveling in that society and we gain a lot. Before reading, we'd better leave a minute or two thinking aboutwhat kind of book we intend to select or what we need to read. In his essay of Studies, Francis Bacon says that history makes men wise; poetry witty; the mathematics subtle; natural philosophy deep; moral grave; logic and rhetoric able to contend. Choosing a book is just as important as choose a friend, if you make a wrong choice, just like you choose a friend who has a total different character from you, I assure you that you will have a hard time and you gain little while spending a lot. So if you have a good imagination, poetry and novels are ready for you, if you are in for history, history books are waiting for you in a certain corner in the library…Once you make a decision on the choice of a book, you should know how to read it. Bacon says that some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested. As to me, reading a book is just like a cow graze the grass land. First of all, he should devour a lot to make herself full so that at her free time she has something to chew. Once we step into the library, our appetite for books are seduced by the books to our taste, we seek these books, we are attracted by them and we pick up one of them and beginning swallowing it madly. Then at the sun set we tear ourselves away from the library feeling full. That's not enough nevertheless, at leisure time we need to ponder and reflect over what we have read, trying to seek the joint between our imagination and the books we read, so thatwhat we gained can ignite our inspiration, wing our imagination and eventually rise our thought to a higher level. When reading a book we need first of all to follow the author. A good book is just like a place of interest which the author creates , reading a book is visiting a place of interest, at the beginning we need a guide, that is the author's thought. We may follow him through the crooked lanes or smooth roads, we see many interesting things. But we also need to give full play to our own imagination, crushing the author's words and extract the essence. Just like a gold seeker, first of all he needs a map to help him locate where the gold lies. What he should do after he precisely locates the gold in the mountain? Just sit there waiting for the appearance of the gold itself like the man leaning against the tree stump waiting for the hare hitting the stump? Of course not.he should have his implement prepared and his men help him, then he needs a good rest and then begins the real painstaking and meaningful work. It is not enough for a reader just reads a book, his faculties are needed to discover treasures hidden among the author's words, to polish them, to practice them until at last the treasures become the reader's own treasures.Writing gives readers the motivation to read. When we are self-contented arrogantly thinking that we need no reading then we try to write something. But things are not as smooth as what we haveimagined. In the process of writing we will be chocked, finding something difficult to express, knowing the limit of our knowledge. So we give up our ignorance and keep reading, reading until we can write without difficulty. Besides, writing can accurately record what we think so as to spot errors in our thought then correct them timely. Therefore reading and writing are twins that can not be separated, we write to stimulate reading, on the contrary we read so that we perfect our writing.Since the birth of the first books, human beings have produced and eliminated countless books, but it is the real ones that survive. So dither not, pick up a book and begin reading because it can talk with you and benefit a lot.。
阅读社团英文作文
阅读社团英文作文I love being a part of the reading club in my school. It's a great way to meet new people and share our love for books. We often have lively discussions about our favorite novels and authors, and it's amazing to see how different everyone's tastes are.The best thing about the reading club is that it's not just about reading books. We also organize fun events like book swaps, where we can exchange our old books for something new to read. It's a great way to discover new authors and genres that we might not have considered before. One of the most exciting things we did last year was organizing a book drive for a local charity. We collected hundreds of books from our school and the local community, and donated them to a charity that provides books to underprivileged children. It was so rewarding to know that our love for reading was making a difference in someoneelse's life.Being a part of the reading club has also helped me improve my own reading habits. I used to only stick to one genre, but now I'm more open to trying new things. I've discovered so many amazing books that I never would have picked up on my own, and it's made me a more well-rounded reader.I would encourage anyone who loves to read to join a reading club. It's a great way to connect with others who share your passion, and you never know what new andexciting things you might discover. Plus, it's a lot of fun!。
读书和看电视哪个更好的英语作文
读书和看电视哪个更好的英语作文Reading Books is Way Better Than Watching TV!Hi there! My name is Jamie and I'm 10 years old. I absolutely love reading books way more than watching TV. Don't get me wrong, sometimes it's fun to watch a cool show or movie. But if I had to choose between the two, reading books wins hands down every single time! Let me tell you why.Reading is the Ultimate AdventureWhen you read a book, it's like you get transported into a whole new world. The words on the page come alive in your imagination in the most magical way. One minute you're sitting on your bed or couch, and the next you're soaring through the sky with a dragon or exploring a haunted castle. How crazy is that? With books, you can be anyone and go anywhere. A book could have you imagining yourself as a brave knight slaying evil creatures. Or you could picture yourself as a pioneer setting out on the Oregon Trail in a covered wagon. Maybe you'll fantasize about being a genius scientist who cracks the code on time travel. The possibilities are literally endless! And the adventures don't have to stop when you finish one book. There are millions of books out there just waiting to take you on a new journey. Every book is like a gateway to experience an incredible new make-believe world and fantastic characters.TV Kind of Limits Your ImaginationNow don't get me wrong, I do still like watching TV from time to time. There are some really entertaining shows and movies out there. But I find that TV doesn't engage my imagination and creativity nearly as much as books do.With TV, you're just watching pictures on a screen. The characters, settings, and storylines are all handed to you instead of you creating them in your own mind. Sure, your imagination can fill in some of the gaps. But for the most part, you're just taking in what the TV is showing you.Reading really sparks your creative thinking in a way that watching a story on TV doesn't. When you're reading, you have to constantly visualize everything that's happening based on the words. You decide what the characters and places look like. You supply the voices, sounds, and movements in your head. To me, that's way more fun than just observing the set images and dialogue on a TV screen.Books Teach You Way MoreAnother huge plus about reading books is how much you learn compared to watching TV. With books, you're constantly expanding your vocabulary by reading new words. You absorb tons of knowledge about different topics like history, science, and cultures. Books expose you to proper grammar and writing skills. Many TV shows don't really teach you much at all. There are some educational programs out there of course. But a lot of TV is just empty entertainment that doesn't grow your brains in any real way. It's mostly just people telling funny jokes or crazy imaginary situations like a family of professional dinosaur catchers. With books, you're learning something meaningful each time without even realizing it. You pick up life lessons and profound wisdom from the stories and characters. You learn new facts about how things work and what's happening in the world. Reading stretches your mind and makes you more knowledgeable.I Learn Better from BooksThis one is really important for me personally. I'm just someone who learns and retains information way better when it's in book form rather than watching it on a TV show or movie. The combination of reading the words and using my imagination to visualize the concepts just makes it stick in my brain better. When I try to learn about something by watching a TV program, a lot of the information just goes in one ear and out the other (that's an expression which means I forget it really easily). But when I read about those same topics in a book, I remember the facts and ideas much more clearly. It's amazing how much better I understand things when I read text compared to watching visuals.Maybe it's because you read at your own pace with a book. With TV, you have to keep up with the pace that the program sets, which makes it harder to truly absorb all the information. Or maybe it's because reading is just a more active process that gets my brain working harder to process everything. Whatever the reason, books are definitely superior for me when it comes to learning.I Love Getting Lost in a Great BookDon't you just love that feeling when you get utterly lost and absorbed in a really phenomenal book? You're just devouringpage after page, desperate to find out what's going to happen next. You become totally oblivious to the outside world around you. All that exists is the story unfolding in your imagination. That's a feeling and experience you can only get from reading books. Sure, you can get somewhat invested in a really gripping TV show. But it's nothing compared to being 200 pages deep into an epic fantasy novel or heart-wrenching memoir. With books, you form such a powerful connection to the characters, settings, and overall narrative.Whenever I'm reading an exceptionally great book, it literally consumes me. I don't even hear people calling my name or asking me something. I have to keep reminding myself to take breaks to eat, use the bathroom, or get ready for bed! Getting lost in a book is one of the most incredible feelings imaginable.Reading Print Books Just Hits DifferentThis is just my personal opinion, but I much prefer reading actual print books over ebooks or anything digital. There's just something about holding a physical book in my hands that makes the whole experience more special and tangible for me.I love cracking open a brand new book, breathing in the smell of the fresh printed pages, and feeling the crispness ofthose first few pages. There's nothing better than dog-earing one of the corners once I get into it. Seeing the book slowly grow more creased, wrinkled, and weathered as I make my way through is so satisfying.Reading on a tablet, ereader, or my mom's iPad just isn't the same at all. It's more straining on my eyes and makes it harder for me to get immersed. Swiping a finger across a screen doesn't give me that same sense of making tangible progress like I get from physically turning the pages of a book.I Really Do Watch Some TV ThoughOkay, I may have come across as totally bashing TV in this essay so far. But that's not entirely fair or accurate. The truth is, I do still enjoy watching certain shows and movies from time to time when I'm in the mood for it. TV can definitely has its place.Sometimes after a long, tiring day, plopping down on the couch to veg out and watch some light TV is the perfect way for me to relax and unwind. Or if I'm feeling sick or going through a stressful time, it can be comforting to watch a familiar TV show from when I was younger that makes me smile. There are even a few really intelligent, well-written TV shows that I appreciate for their creativity and how they tackle complexthemes. Shows that make you think critically about the world around you. But for the most part, I hugely prefer getting my entertainment from books instead of TV.Books Will Always Be Number One for MeAt the end of the day, books will always reign supreme over TV for me. Reading is just such a magical, educational, and imaginative experience that watching TV could never quite replicate completely. While they both have their upsides, reading books is my one true love and favorite pastime.I really hope I was able to fully convey why reading books is so insanely awesome through all of my points in this essay. Just imagining getting whisked away into new realms of brave heroes, dastardly villains, far-off lands, and high-stakes adventures makes me giddy with joy. There's seriously nothing better than devouring a tremendously good book.So yeah, while TV can be fun here and there, reading books will always be number one in my heart. They spark your imagination like nothing else. They teach you profound lessons while expanding your smarts. And they allow you to get fully invested in outrageous worlds and characters in a way that movies and shows could never quite capture.Books are just the best! Thanks for letting me explain why I love them so much. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a 700-page fantasy novel waiting for me to dive back into. After writing this essay, I can't wait to lose myself in its pages yet again. Happy reading!。

Isn't that amazing? You can read in the dark without bothering anyone because of the glowing screen. And e-books are usually cheaper than paper books, so you can buy more books without spending too much money. So, which one do I prefer? Well, I think both paper reading and e-reading are great! I love the feel and smell of paper books, but I also love the convenience and portability of e-books. I thinkit's important to enjoy reading, no matter which way you prefer. So, let's keep reading, whether it's paper or electronic! That's all for today, guys! Keep reading and exploring new worlds through books. Bye-bye!篇8Paper reading and electronic reading are two different ways for us to explore the world of books. Even though I am just a elementary school student, I still have my own thoughts on how to deal with them.Firstly, let's talk about paper reading. You know, holding a real book in my hands feels so special. I love the smell of the pages and the feeling of flipping through them. When I read a paper book, I can immerse myself in the story without any digital distractions. It's like having a cozy adventure in my room. However, electronic reading also has its advantages. It's super convenient to have hundreds of books stored in just one small device. I can carry my e-reader wherever I go and read whenever I want. Plus, e-books are usually cheaper than paper books, which is great for my piggy bank.In my opinion, both paper reading and electronic reading are important. I think it's good to have a balance between them. I can read paper books when I want to relax and enjoy a quiet moment, and I can read e-books when I'm on the go or need quick access to information. So, to sum up, I believe that both paper reading and electronic reading have their own charms. As long as we enjoy reading and keep learning new things, it doesn't matter which way we choose. Let's keep exploring the world of books together!篇9Hey guys, do you like reading? I sure do! Today, let's talk about our attitude towards paper reading and electronic reading.Paper reading is so much fun! There's something really special about holding a real book in your hands and flipping through the pages. The smell of the paper, the sound it makes when you turn the page, it's all so magical. And you can write notes in the margins, underline your favorite parts, and even draw pictures if you want to. Plus, you don't have to worry about your battery dying in the middle of a great story! But electronic reading is cool too! With e-readers and tablets, you can carry hundreds of books with you wherever you go. You can adjust the font size, search for specific words or phrases, and even listen to audio books. And it's great for the environment too, since you're not using paper. So, how do we feel about paper reading and electronic reading? Well, I think it's important to enjoy both! Paper reading is classic and nostalgic, while electronic reading is convenient and modern. We should embrace all forms of reading and appreciate the unique experiences they offer. In conclusion, whether you prefer paper reading or electronic reading, the most important thing is to keep reading and exploring new worlds through books. So grab your favorite book, whether it's paper or electronic, and dive into a new adventure! Happy reading, everyone!篇10Hey guys! Today I want to talk about how we should treat paper reading and electronic reading. As a little kid, I know we all love to read, whether it's a storybook or an e-book on a tablet. But it's important to have a good attitude towards both types of reading.First of all, let's talk about paper reading. Reading a physical book can be really fun because you get to turn the pages and feel the paper in your hands. Plus, it's easier on your eyes than staring at a screen all day. It's also cool to see all the different covers and illustrations in a real book. So, we should cherish paper reading and not forget about the joy it brings. But we can't ignore electronic reading either. E-books are great because you can carry a whole library in just one device. You can also adjust the font size and brightness to make reading more comfortable. And let's not forget about audiobooks! They're perfect for when you're busy or on the go.I think it's important to have a balance between paper reading and electronic reading. We should enjoy the best of both worlds and not be too attached to just one. So, next time you're choosing a book to read, think about whether you want to go old-school with a physical book or try out something new with an e-book.In conclusion, both paper reading and electronic reading have their own benefits. Let's appreciate and enjoy them both! Happy reading, everyone!。

英语作文以多读书读好书为题写一篇作文
英语作文以多读书读好书为题写一篇作文全文共5篇示例,供读者参考篇1Reading Books is the Best!Hi there! My name is Tommy and I'm 10 years old. Today I want to tell you all about why reading books is so awesome. Reading is my absolute favorite thing to do! I read books pretty much every single day. I even read in the car, at the park, at my friend's houses, and pretty much anywhere I can. My mom and dad are always telling me to "Put that book down and go play!" But reading is way more fun than playing! Well, to me at least.I just love getting lost in a good book. It's like you get teleported right into a totally new world. One minute I'm sitting on the couch in my living room, and the next I'm hang-gliding over giant redwood forests, or I'm a kid pirate sailing across the high seas, or I'm a brave knight fighting a terrifying dragon! Books let you go on amazing adventures without even leaving your house. How cool is that?Books also teach you so many new things. I've learned about different countries and cultures around the world just fromreading. I know about the rainforests of the Amazon, the frozen lands of Antarctica, the busy streets of Tokyo, and the towering skyscrapers of New York City, all from books! Reading helps make you smarter too. The more you read, the better you get at reading. And the better you get at reading, the easier it is to learn other subjects like math, science, and history. I'm at the top of my class and it's all because of how much I read! But you can't just read any old book. You really have to choose good books to read. Good books are the ones that really pull you in and make you feel like you're there. They describe everything so vividly, with lots of details to help you picture it all in your mind. A good book has well-developed characters that you can relate to, and a gripping plot that keeps you wanting to read more. Good books open your mind to new places, people, and ideas in a way that's exciting and fun.Bad books, on the other hand, are just boring. They're either too simple and babyish, or way too complex with too many big words that make no sense. Bad books are written poorly, have lousy storylines, and don't draw you in at all. Those kinds of books put me right to sleep! Why would I want to read something dull and uninteresting when there are so manyincredible, mind-blowing books out there? Life's too short to read bad books! My top three favorite book series are Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, and A Series of Unfortunate Events. Have you read those? They're filled with non-stop action and adventure, fascinating mythological creatures, and lovable characters you can't help but root for. Plus, they tackle deep themes like friendship, courage, good vs. evil, and not judging others by how they look. Those books never fail to keep me hooked from start to finish!I also really enjoy books on curious topics that make you think, like science or unsolved mysteries. One book I read taught me all about black holes, quasars, and the possibility of multiverses. My mind was blown! Another book went into crazy Bermuda Triangle theories and legends of the Loch Ness Monster. I stayed up way past my bedtime because I couldn't put it down. Reading stuff like that is so much fun because it expands your understanding of the universe...and the unknown!Reading has honestly changed my life. It's sparked my imagination more than any movie, video game, or anything else. It motivates me to work harder, dream bigger, and never stop being curious. Books have taken me to magical realms and onepic quests I'll never forget. Whenever I have free time, you can bet I'll be curled up with a book!So that's why I think it's super important for kids to read as many good books as possible. Getting into the habit of reading for pleasure at a young age will set you up for success. You'll build your vocabulary, writing skills, creativity, and become a critical thinker. Not to mention all the incredible tales of heroism and adventure you'll experience! Pretty much every super successful person says reading played a huge part in their life. Just think of how smart you'll grow up to be if you read every single day!My biggest advice is to find books you're actually interested in and excited about. Don't just read something because it's an assignment or because someone else is reading it. Pick topics, genres, authors, or series that you genuinely find intriguing. Ask your parents, teachers, or librarians for recommendations based on your interests and favorite books so far. And don't be afraid to put down a book you're not enjoying - life's too short for boring reads! The bottom line is: reading opens up entire universes. Good books will spark your imagination, expand your mind, and transport you to thrilling new worlds. They'll educate you, inspireyou, and introduce you to fascinating people, cultures, and ideas. So read as many awesome books as you possibly can! Your future self will thank you for it. Trust me, getting lost in the pages of a great book is one of the greatest adventures you'll ever go on.篇2Reading Good Books is Awesome!Hi there! My name is Jamie and I'm 10 years old. I really love reading all kinds of books - adventure stories, mysteries, books about animals or space or history. Reading is just the best thing ever!My parents always encouraged me to read from a very young age. When I was just a baby, they would read picture books to me every night before bed. As I got a little older, they started taking me to the library every week to pick out new books. The librarians were so nice and would help me find books on topics I was interested in at that moment, like dinosaurs or sharks or princesses. In school, my teachers also worked really hard to get our class excited about books. In kindergarten, we had special Reading Buddies who were older kids that would come read tous. In first and second grade, we had D.E.A.R time which stands for "Drop Everything And Read!" Our teacher would tell us to stop what we were doing and just read quietly for 20 minutes. It was my favorite part of the day!Now that I'm older, in 4th grade, I read a ton of chapter books and novels. My friends and I are really into book series like Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and The Babysitters Club. We'll read the same books and then talk about them at recess or sleepovers. It's so fun to discuss the characters and plot and try to predict what will happen next!Reading has taught me so many important things. First of all, it really helps improve my vocabulary and language skills. The more books I read, the more new words I learn. My writing has gotten a lot better too from seeing how authors put sentences together in creative ways.Reading also lets me learn about so many different topics that interest me - from real events in history to imaginary fantasy worlds to how things work through non-fiction books. My knowledge about the world just continues to grow every time I pick up a new book. But maybe the most important thing reading has done for me is spark my imagination and creativity. When I readadventure stories, I'm transported to distant lands and get to envision what those places might look like. With mysteries, I get to put together the clues in my mind and try to solve the puzzle before the ending. And reading about different characters helps me understand how other people might think and feel in various situations.Reading is kind of like a key that opens up entire universes in my mind. It allows me to dream and wonder "What if...?" That's where so many amazing ideas and inventions throughout history started - from someone simply asking "What if...?"There are so many wonderful books out there, on every topic you could possibly imagine. Reading them expands not just your mind, but your heart and soul as well. Books introduce you to different cultures and perspectives from all over the world. Not every kid is that fortunate. That's why I want to continue advocating for more access to quality books, more funding for school and public libraries, and more programs that promote childhood literacy. Every single kid deserves the opportunity to experience the joy, wonder and knowledge that reading can unlock. In my opinion, filling our lives and minds with good books is one of the most valuable things we can do as human beings. Books allow us to constantly grow, learn and expand our understanding. They spark questions, ideas and meaningful conversations. They bring people together through shared stories and perspectives. And at the end of the day, books have the power to not just educate, but to truly inspire us to create a better world. So yes, I may only be 10 years old. But I already know that reading as many good books as possible is one of the most important things I can do. I hope you'll join me on this incredibly amazing journey that reading allows. Who knows where it may lead? The possibilities are infinite when you keep an open mind, an open heart, and an open book!篇3Read More Books, Read Good BooksHello friends! My name is Emily and I am in 5th grade. Today I want to talk to you about the importance of reading books - not just any books, but really good books! Reading has always been one of my favorite activities ever since I was a little kid. There is just something truly magical about opening up a book and being transported to a whole new world of adventure, mystery, and discovery. When I was younger, my parents would read storybooks to me every night before bed. Some of my earliest memories are cuddling up with my mom or dad, listening intently as their voices brought the vibrant characters and exciting plots to life right before my very eyes. Those cherished moments sparked my enduring love for reading and instilled in me an insatiable curiosity to constantly learn and explore through books. As I grew older, I naturally gravitated towards novels and chapter books suited for my age group. I have fond recollections of breezing through popular children's series like The Magic Tree House, Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, and The Chronicles of Narnia. Whenever I finished one book, I could hardly wait to dive into thenext thrilling installment! Reading fueled my imagination and allowed me to temporarily escape from the mundane realities of everyday life. These days, I try to read at least one book every week or two. That may seem like a lot, but when you find books that truly captivate you, the pages just seemto fly by without you even realizing it! I have discovered myriad incredible stories and acquired a wealth of knowledge spanning different genres, time periods, cultures, and subject matters - all from the simple act of reading.Reading stimulates our minds in extraordinary ways. It exposes us to new concepts, philosophies, and perspectives that expand our understanding of the world around us. It enhances our analytical thinking capabilities as we naturally start to question the motivations of the characters, the underlying messages of the narratives, and how the events unfold. Reading sharpens our focus and attention spans in an era where we are constantly being bombarded by multiple distractions and overstimulation. Moreover, reading is a fundamental building block for cultivating robust communication skills. The more we read, the more our vocabulary expands. We absorb the grammaticalstructures, writing styles, and rhetoric employed by skilled authors. These linguistic abilities carry over into our own speaking and writing proficiency. Frequent readers tend to articulately express themselves with greater confidence and clarity. Not only is reading amazing for personal growth and development, but it is also a wonderful way to momentarily escape from stress and unwind. Snuggling up with an engrossing book is my go-to method for relaxation and rejuvenation after a long, tiring day. All of my worries and anxieties seem to just melt away as I become immersed in the narrative. Reading provides the perfect peaceful retreat to recharge our mental and emotional batteries. While I love reading books from any genre that piques my interest, I do have a special affinity for literary classics and award-winning novels. These tend to be exceptionallywell-written with profound underlying meanings and beautiful prose. Some of my all-time favorite books include To Kill a Mockingbird, The Book Thief, The Giver, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, Wonder, and The One and Only Ivan. Each one has left an indelible mark on my soul and fundamentally shaped my perspective on life.I cannot overstate how integral reading has been to my personal growth and learning over the years. Through reading, I have been exposed to diverse cultures and philosophies far beyond my local community. I have gained unparalleled insights into the human experience across different centuries and societies. I have developed unbreakable bonds with beloved characters that have become like close friends accompanying me on incredible journeys of adventure and self-discovery. Reading has nurtured my creativity, fostered my intellectual curiosity, and broadened my horizons in innumerable ways.It pains me to see so many of my peers and others actively avoiding books in favor of passive entertainment like video games, social media, movies, and television shows. While those activities certainly have their place, they simply cannot replicate the cognitive benefits, emotional connections, and imagination-fueling prowess derived from getting completely engrossed in a phenomenal book. Reading is an irreplaceable experience that contributes to our personal enrichment, boosts our academic performance, and equips us with the skills to lead successful, fulfilling lives. So to all my fellow students out there, I earnestly encourage you to pick up reading as a hobby if you have not done soalready! Start with books, genres, or topics that genuinely interest and excite you. Get recommendations from friends, parents, teachers, or librarians. If you struggle to stay focused at first, be patient and keep practicing - it becomes easier over time, I promise! Once you discover the unparalleled magic, adventures, and eye-opening lessons contained within the pages of incredible books, you will be hooked for life. Reading is a priceless gift that keeps on giving at every age and stage.Step into your nearest library or bookstore, take a deep breath of that inherently calming book smell, and let the enchanting world of literature sweep you away to majestic realms where your imagination can soar without limits. I assure you, the wondrous places you will go and the profound wisdom you will gain through reading are well worth the journey every single time. So what are you waiting for? Today I want to tell you about how important it is to read lots of books, and not just any books, but really good books! Reading is one of my very favorite things to do.I started reading when I was just a little kid. My mom and dad would read me stories every night before bed. Some of my earliest memories are cuddling up with them and listening to the stories. I loved storytime so much! The books would take me to magical worlds with dragons and princesses and talking animals.I was hooked from a very young age.As I got a little older, I started reading on my own. I'd spend hours in my room or under a tree in the backyard, completely lost in the pages of a book. Reading quickly became my favorite hobby. I just couldn't get enough of it! Whenever I finished one book, I immediately wanted to start another. At first, I didn't really think too much about what kinds of books I was reading. I would read anything I could get my hands on - picture books, early reader chapter books, whatever looked interesting. But as I got a bit older and became a stronger reader, my teacher started encouraging me to read higher quality books. She emphasized how important it is to read books that are well-written, with great storytelling and characters you can really care about. She said those types of books can really expand your mind and your imagination in a way that other books can't. They introduce you to new ideas and new ways of looking at the world. So I started being a lot more selective about the books I chose. I still loved fiction books full of adventure and fantasy, but I looked for ones that were highly recommended or had won awards for great children's literature. I read classics like Charlotte's Web, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Modern books like Harry Potter and Percy Jackson became new favorites.I noticed that these exceptional books really were a step above others. The storytelling was more creative and engaging. The characters were so well-developed that they felt like close friends by the time I finished the book. The books would make me think deeply about important values and lessons. They opened my eyes to cultures and perspectives I had never considered before.Good books for kids don't have to be fine literature or the classics though. I also loved reading high-quality non-fiction books on subjects I was really interested in like animals, space, history, and science experiments. These books went into so much wonderful detail on the topics and were written in a way that captured my imagination just as much as novels did. After reading them, I felt like a mini-expert on those subjects! The more high-quality, well-written books I read, the more I could appreciate the incredible craftsmanship that went into creating them. The authors painted pictures with their words in such a vivid and powerful way. Their writing skills allowed me to vividly imagine the characters and scenes they described. The stories just came alive in my mind in a way that didn't happen with lower-quality writing.I'm so grateful that my teachers encouraged me to be selective and read more high-quality books as I became a stronger reader. It has allowed me to go on thousands of rich adventures just by picking up a book. From becoming a wizard battling evil witches and warlocks, to exploring the depths of the ocean, to traveling back in time to watch ancient civilizations - I've experienced it all through reading exceptional books. My love of reading has helped me become a better student too. The more books I read, the more my vocabulary grows. The challenging books have helped improve my reading comprehension abilities. And the exposure to so many different writing styles has helped make me a stronger writer myself.Reading has allowed me to learn about countless cultures, Adding to my knowledge has helped me do better on tests and assignments. It's also made me more curious about the worldaround me. Reading sparks my imagination and gives me new interests to explore through books or real-life experiences.Beyond just helping me as a student though, being an avid reader has enriched my life in so many ways. Reading has made me more creative and open-minded. It has expanded my perspective and allowed me to consider viewpoints very different from my own. Books have taught me invaluable lessons about friendship, courage, perseverance, and so many other important values. So if you're a kid who doesn't read much, I really really encourage you to give it a try! And if you do read but mostly stick to easier or lower-quality books, I challenge you to be more selective. Read the award-winners and classics for your age level. Read well-written non-fiction books on topics that fascinate you. You'll quickly discover how transporting and transformative a truly exceptional book can be.There's a whole incredible world waiting for you through the pages of great books. You just have to take that first step and pick one up. Reading more books, and making sure they are high-quality books, has honestly changed my life. I know it can change yours too! Translation exercise:
About Reading Books by Virginia Woolf
It is simple enough to say that since books have classes—fiction, biography, poetry—we should separate them and take from each what it is right that each should give us. Yet few people ask from books what books can give us.
说来容易:既然书有各种各样—如小说、传记、诗歌—那我们就应该把它们分门别类,并且各按其类来汲取每本书理应给予我们的内容。
然而,很少人读书时想过书本能够提供些什么问题。
既然书籍有不同的门类,如小说、传记、诗歌等,我们就应该把它们区分开来,并从每种中汲取它应当给我们提供的正确的东西;这话说起来固然容易。
然而,很少有人要求从书籍中得到它们所能提供的东西。
Most commonly we come to books with blurred and divided minds, asking of fiction that it shall be true, of poetry that it shall be false, of biography that it shall be flattering, of history that it shall enforce our own prejudices.
最普通的现象是,我们拿起书本时头脑并不清醒,目标并不一致,我们要求小说叙述真人真事,要求诗歌表现虚假,要求传记给人捧场,要求历史证实我们自己的偏见。
通常我们总是三心二意地带着模糊的观念去看书:要求小说情节真实,要求诗歌内容虚构,要求传记阿谀奉承,要求历史能加深我们自己的偏见。
If we could banish all such preconception when we read, that would be an admirable beginning. Do not dictate to your author; try to become him. Be his fellow worker and accomplice. If you hang back, and reserve and criticize at first, you are preventing yourself from getting the fullest possible value from what you read.
But if you open your mind as widely as possible, then signs and hints of almost imperceptible fineness, from the twist and turn of the first sentences, will bring you into the presence of a human being unlike any other.
然而,如果你没有先入之见,虚怀若谷,那么,打开书本,隐晦曲折的字里行间,难以觉察的细微迹象和暗示便会向你展示一个与众不同的人。
然而,如果你能尽量敞开思想,那么,书中开头几句迂回曲折的话里所包含的几乎难以觉察的细微的迹象和暗示,就会把你引到一个与众不同的人物的面前去。
Steep yourself in this, acquaint yourself with this, and soon you will find that your author is giving you, or attempting to give you, something far more definite.
深入进去,沉浸其中,谙熟这一切,你会很快发现,书的作者正在,或努力在给予你一些十
分明确的东西。
如果你深入下去,如果你去认识这个人物,你很快就会领悟作者正在给你或试图给你某些明确得多的东西。
