IV. Translate the following passage into Chinese. (40 points) Obviously many people knew that Maugham and Forster were homosexuals, and Coward never made any effort to disguise his sexual preference, but the issue was never made public, and neither Maugham nor Forster felt free enough to express his own feelings. Maugham and Forster were not alone in their fear of expos町、 and there was good reason for their fear. Andre Gide was one of the first m苟or figures to declare himself a homosexual during his own lifetime ( 1869-1951 ). He did so first in an autobiographical novel published in 1924,扩 It Die, and to make certain that the implications of the novel were fully understood, he published his · dialogues on homosexuality, Corydon, that same year. Other later writers such as Allan Ginsberg and Christopher Isherwood never made any secret about their sexual preference and wrote novels and poems on homoerotic themes. Tennessee Williams also wrote about his homosexuality, but unlike Ginsberg and Isherwood, never used it as an explicit theme in his writing, although some of his plays could play as well with a homosexual couple as a heterosexual one. Others who never publicly announced their homosexuality include the economist John Maynard Keynes, the novelists Hart Grane, Hugh Walpole, Virginia Woolf, the poet W.H. Auden, and vast numbers of businessmen, workers, and even politicians such as Tom D.iberg, who was chairman of the National Executive Committee of the British Labor Party from 1949 to 1972. In 卢his last case, though his homosexuality was known to many of his fellow MPs, it allegedly kept him out of the British cabinet, although he was appointed to the House of Lords. Homosexual, in fact, once the veil of secrecy is removed, is ubiquitous. Even such American folk heroes as Horatio Alger, Jr., were homosexual; his asexual

Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them, you should decide on the best one from the four choices marked A, B, C, and D.Passage OneQuestions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage:No one knows for sure why birds migrate(定期迁徙). One theory of migration says that ancient birds of the northern part of the earth were forced southward during the Ice Age, when ice covered large parts of Europe, Asia and North America. As the ice melted, the birds came back to their homelands, spent the summer, and then went south again in winter. Gradually, these comings and goings became habits, and birds now migrate though much of the ice has gone.Another theory proposes that the ancient home of all modern birds was the tropic areas. There they lived so well that the region became overcrowded. Many species had to move northward. During the summer, these birds found plenty of room and food. In winter, however, food became scarce and they had to return to the south.A newer theory is that increasing daylight stimulates certain glands(腺) in the bird's body and prepares it for migration. One scientist is able to make birds migrate in midwinter by exposing them for two months to artificial daylight. Recoveries of marked birds indicate that they fly north as soon as they are set free. The conclusion is that the urge to migrate is determined by changes in the bird’s body which take place under seasonal changes in the length of daylight. This theory would account for the fact that not all birds migrate at the same time. Each species seems to have its own schedule. The theory would also account for the regular time and routes of migration. Birds arrive at a given place year after year. Unfavorable weather delays them only a few days. Total hours of daylight, rather than weather, start them on the way.How birds find their way to the same place year after year and why they follow their own particular route are still mysteries. They evidently do not follow known landmarks(地面标志), for many young birds migrate alone without the help of experienced adults.21. We can conclude from the first paragraph that ______.A. during the Ice Age, the whole Europe was covered with iceB. the south used to be the homelands of all birdsC. scientists can confidently explain why birds migrate nowD. migration of birds can be explained by the change of ice on earth.22. The birds mentioned in the third paragraph fly north in midwinter because ______.A. they are specially trained by a scientistB. they are affected by seasonal changesC. there is a change in their body temperatureD. they are exposed to extra daylight23. The phrase “account for” (Line 2, Para. 4) most probably means ______.A. indicateB. explainC. proveD. provide24. Which of the following can NOT be inferred from the passage?A. Birds do not migrate at the same time.B. Birds usually follow regular routes of migration.C. Each species has a special reason for migration.D. Birds migrate to their own particular places every year.25. The best title for the passage is ______.A. Different Accounts of MigrationB. Migration and WeatherC. New Discovery of Bird MigrationD. Routes of Bird MigrationPassage 2Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage:For a clearer picture of what the student knows, most teachers use another kind of examination in addition to objective tests. They use "essay" tests, which require students to write long answers to broad, general questions such as the following:"Mention several ways in which Benjamin Franklin has influenced the thinking of people in his own country and in other parts of the world. One advantage of the essay test is that it reduces the element of luck. The student cannot get a high score just by making a lucky guess. Another advantage is that it shows the examiner more about the student’s ability to put facts together into a meaningful whole. It should show how deeply he has thought about the subject.Sometimes, though, essay tests have disadvantages, too. Some students ate able to write rather good answers without really knowing much about the subject, while other students who actually know the material have trouble expressing their ideas in the essay form.Besides, in an essay test the student's score may depend upon the examiner's feelings at the time of reading the answer. If he is feeling tired or bored, the student may receive a lower score than he should. Another examiner reading the same answer might give it a much higher mark. Because of this, the objective test gives each student a fairer chance, and of course it is easier and quicker to score.Whether an objective test or an essay test is used, problems arise. When some objective questions are used along with some essay questions, however, a fairly clear picture of the student's knowledge can usually be obtained26. What have been discussed in the previous paragraphs?A. The essay test.B. How teachers test their students.C. How students write their essays.D. The objective test.27. The essay test is preferred because______.A. it shows more about the student's understanding of the subjectB. it tests the student's knowledge of the material as well as his expression of ideas.C. it gives each student a fairer chanceD. its scoring may be influenced by the examiner's feelings28. The word “this” (Line 4, Para. 4) refers to the fact that ______.A. students may receive a lower score in an essay testB. another examiner usually gives the answer a higher markC. different examiners may give the same essay different scoresD. the objective test gives each student a fairer chance29. According to the passage, which of the following statements about the objective test isNOT true?A. It is more objective than the essay test in terms of scoring.B. It allows the student to guess the correct answer without really knowing the material.C. It shows the student's ability to think about difficult problems.D. It is easy and quick to score.30. According to the author, an ideal test should be ______A. an objective testB. an essay testC. a combination of the twoD. something newPassage 3Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage:Cars are important in the United States. Without a car most people feel that they are poor. And even if a person is poor he doesn't feel really poor when he has a car.Henry Ford was the man who first started making cars in large numbers. He probably didn't know how much the car was going to affect American culture. The car made the United States a nation on wheels. And it helped make the United States what it is today. There are three main reasons the car became so popular in the United States. First of all the country is a huge one and Americans like to move around in it. The car provides the most comfortable and cheapest form of transportation. With a car people can go any place without spending a lot of money. The second reason cars are popular is the fact that the United States never really developed an efficient and inexpensive form of public transportation. Long-distance trains have never been as common in the United States as they are in other parts of the world. Nowadays there is a good system of air-service provided by planes. But it is too expensive to be used frequently. The third reason is the most important one, though. The American spirit of independence is what really made cars popular. Americans don't like to wait for a bus or a train or even a plane. They don't like to have to follow an exact schedule. A car gives them the freedom to schedule their own time. And this is the freedom that Americans want most to have. The gas shortage has caused a big problem for Americans. But the answer will not be a bigger system of public transportation. The real solution will have to be a new kind of car, one that does not use so much gas.31. When do most Americans feel they are poor?A. When they don't have a car.B. When they live in a huge country.C. When they don't use planes.D. When they have a car.32. What is the most important reason that cars become popular in the United States?A. Because the United States is huge.B. Because public transportation is not so good.C. Because Americans like to be independent.D. Because Americans like to move around.33. What public transportation is good in the United States?A. Buses.B. Trains.C. Taxis.D. Planes.34. What has caused a big problem for Americans?A. A new kind of car.B. Public transportation.C. The gas shortage.D. Poor people.35. Which of the following is not mentioned according to this passage?A. Cars have made the nation on wheels.B. Cars have made the United States have a gas shortage.C. Nearly 80% of the American people have cars.D. Cars have made American independent.Passage 4Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage:I don't often lose things and I'm especially careful with money, so I was quite surprised when I reached for my wallet and it wasn't there. At first, I thought it was possible that I could have left it at home. Then I remembered taking it out to pay for the taxi, so I knew I had it with me just before I walked into the restaurant. I wondered if it was possible that it could have slipped out of my pocket while I was eating dinner. Thinking about that possibility, I turned and walked back to the table where I had been sitting. Unfortunately, there were several people sitting at the table at the time, so I called a waiter and explained to him that my wallet had fallen out of my pocket while I was sitting at the table a few minutes earlier. I had the waiter go over to the table to see if my wallet was on the floor. While the waiter was looking for it, the manager of the restaurant came up to me and asked me if anything was wrong. I didn't want to get a lot of people involved in the problem, but I knew I had to get the wallet back. I told the manager what had happened. He had me describe the wallet to him, and then he insisted that I report the missing wallet to the police. I told him that I didn't particularly want to get the police involved in it; besides, I was in a hurry because I had an appointment with my doctor in just a few minutes. I explained to him that my biggest worry at the moment was how I was going to pay the check. He told me not to worry about that. He had me write down my name and address, and he said he would send me a bill.36. Why was the writer so sure he had brought his wallet with him?A. He remembered that he didn't leave it at home.B. 南京理工大学工程硕士英语课程考试2011.8试题及参考答案南京理工大学工程硕士英语课程考试试题(2011年8月)Directions:Write all your answers on the Answer Sheet.Part I Reading Comprehension (40 points)Section A Reading in depthDirections:In this section there are 2 passages. Each passage is followed by 5 questions orunfinished sentences. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C, and D. Choose thebest answer and mark your choice on your Answer Sheet.Passage OneQuestions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. All forms of life interact with the environment in which they exist, and also with other lifeforms. In the 20th century this premise gave rise to the concept of ecosystems, which can bedefined as any situation where there is interaction between organisms and their environment.Ecosystems are composed of a variety of abiotic and biotic components that function in aninterrelated way. The structure and composition is determined by various environmental factorsthat are interrelated. Variations of these factors will initiate dynamic modifications to theecosystem. Some of the more important components are: soil, atmosphere, radiation from the sun, water, and living organisms. Each living organism has a continual relationship with everyother element that makes up itsenvironment. Within the ecosystem, species are connected and dependent upon one another in thefood chain, and exchange energy and matter between themselves as well as with theirenvironment.Every species has limits of tolerance to factors that affect its survival, reproductive successand ability to continue to thrive and interact sustainably with the rest of its environment, which inturn may have effects on these factors for many other species or even on the whole of life. Theconcept of an ecosystem is thus an important subject of study, as such study provides informationneeded to make decisions about how human life may interact in a way that allows the variousecosystems to be sustained for future use rather than used up or otherwise rendered ineffective. For the purpose of such study, a unit of smaller size is called a micro-ecosystem. For example, anecosystem can be a stone and all the life under it. A macro-ecosystem might involve a wholeecological region, with its drainage basin. The following ecosystems are examples of the kinds currently under intensive study: oceanicmeadow ecosystems such asecosystems, continental ecosystems, such as “forest ecosystems”,steppes or savannas, or agro-ecosystems, systems in inland waters, such as lentic ecosystems suchas lakes or ponds; or lotic ecosystems such as rivers. Another classification can be made byreference to its communities, such as in the case of a human ecosystem. Regional groupings of,distinctive plants and animals best adapted to the region’s physical natural environment, latitude altitude, and terrain are known as biomes. The broadest classification, today under wide study andanalysis, and also subject to widespread arguments about its nature and validity, is that of theentire sum of life seen as analogous to a self-sustaining organism.1. Which of the following statements about an ecosystem is NOT true?A) An ecosystem is usually composed of some nonliving and living organisms.1。
