大学英语综合教程四Unit13答案
KEY TO EXERCISESText comprehensionI. Decide which of the following best states the author's purpose of writing.C.II. Judge, according to the text, whether the following statements are true or false.1. F. Refer to Paragraph 1. What the author means by "The season was wrong" is that in the winter of Pennsylvania, it was impossible to see bluebirds, as the state is located in the northeastern part of the United States.2. T. Refer to Paragraph 2.3. F. Refer to Paragraph 13. The man had a playful spirit without an evil purpose. He playeda trick on his children, only to amuse them and make their hard life lively.4. T. Refer to Paragraph 15.5. F. Refer to Paragraph 20. Though it is true that in the narrator's view the presence of his children had boosted the old man's spirits, she didn't ascribe her father's survival exclusively to it. The medical work and, more importantly, the latent influence of the bluebirds were not to be ignored. The old man had a special feeling for blue-birds. It is sensible to believe that his constant concern for the creatures must have worked in his winning of the battle. This can be seen from his display of great care for the birds once he returned home from the hospital.6. F. Refer to Paragraphs 27-28. The man pretended to have forgotten the name of the bird and asked the narrator about it. This was actually a reflection of his playful spirit deeply ingrained in him.III. Answer the following questions.1. Because her father was hospitalized for a heart attack. Since he had already experienced two attacks, the narrator was unsure whether the old man could survive this time.2. The fact that every human being has an instinct for life couldn't account for everything here. There are more reasons why the old man didn't want to stop fighting his disease. For one thing, he had a family. He loved them and they loved him. For another, he couldn't rest assured of the bluebirds for whom he had a special feeling. In a sense, he no longer treated the creatures as animals but as humans and even as his own children. These new children, to him, needed more help from him than his grown-up children, as can be seen from his extraordinary concern for them when he was released from hospital.3. Whatever job you do, you must put your heart into it.4. The man was fascinated by the species and learned their characteristics through careful and long-term observations. He acquired the knowledge of the renowned quality of the creatures, the number of broods a pair would have and the help of the earlier nestlings offered to feed the later ones. All this made the narrator realize that her father had become an expert on this species.5. First, they have the same number of children. The coal miner had six children to raise and Caruso's mate laid six eggs. Second, Caruso and his mate made herculean efforts to feed the nestlings just as the miner did to support his family , loading nine tons a day and going on to work once he was back home. What the bluebirds did probably reminded the old man and thenarrator of the hard life they had ever had. This may strengthen their affection for the creatures.6. What the old man gave to the bluebirds was not just nesting boxes but his constant care as well, though his emotional offering may be unintelligible to the creatures. What the birds gave back was nothing else but a promise of hope and triumph. The spiritual support from the creatures must have worked in his recovery from his severe heart attack.IV. Explain in your own words the following sentences taken from the text.1 . The sparkle in his eyes often betrayed his playful spirit when they met your eyes in conversation.2. Dad must have been encouraged by his children's presence at his bedside in his fight against the heart attack ...3. Dad could only move around in the rooms downstairs, unable to climb upstairs or go out-side.4. After the fight, she assumed again her arrogant posture while Caruso passionately went on with his pleasant courtship songs.5. Suddenly one extremely clear morning, when the sky was as blue as the color of Caruso's courting clothing ...Structure analysis of the textIn Part I (Paragraphs 1-7), the author tells us the background of her story, especially the importance of the small birds to her father. In Part Ⅱ (Paragraphs 8-19), she recalls the life of her father, his philosophy of life, his sacrifice for the family and children and then his love for the birds. In Part III (Paragraphs 20-30), she focuses on how her father treated the birds and how fee birds paid him back.Rhetorical features of the textThe author used the following endearments to describe the playful character of her father; eyes ... wise as an owl's, sparkle with devilment (Paragraph 9), sly grin, the devilment that returned to his eyes (Paragraph 28). And her father called the bluebirds rascals.More examples of endearment: A husband can call his wife "bitch" and the wife can call him "bastard" in some situations to express their love for each other in a playful way.Vocabulary exercisesI. This is Bob Doughty with the VOA Special English Envirosts in the United States have reported some good news about the ozone in the atmosphere. Recent findings suggest that the destruction of ozone by pollution is slowing. Ozone is a form of oxygen. Its presence above Earth protects us from radiation from the sun. In one study, researchers examined information gathered by NASA space agency satellites and by equipment on Earth. The findings? In the words of Michael Newchurch of the University of Alabama: "This is the beginning of a recovery of the ozone layer." Mister Newchurch led the study. He says the atmosphere was losing about eight percent of the ozone layer per ten-year period since the late nineteen-seventies. In the last five years, though, that rate of loss has dropped by half. He says the atmosphere should start to gain ozone before long. He says a full recovery, however, is about fifty years away, as long as the Montreal Protocol remains in place.

I went on my first volunteer project in West Virginia. On the night we arrived, we discovered that “our family” was living in a trailer (拖车) that was in poor condition. A crew had been working on it for two weeks, but every time they finished one problem, another surfaced. We decided the only reasonable solution was to build a new house—something unusual but necessary under these circumstances. The family was overjoyed with their new house that was twenty by thirty feet with three bedrooms, a bath and a kitchen. On Tuesday of that week, while we ate lunch together, I asked the family’s three boys, Josh, Eric and Ryan, “What do you want for your new room?” Expecting toys and o ther gadgets that children usually ask for, we were astonished when Josh responded, “I just want a bed.”The boys had never slept in a bed! They were accustomed to plastic mats. That night we had a meeting and decided that beds would be the perfect gift. On Thursday night, a few adults in our group drove to the nearest city and bought beds and new bedding. When we saw the delivery truck coming, we told the family about the surprise. We could hardly contain ourselves. It was like watching excited children on Christmas morning. That afternoon, as we fitted the frames of the beds together, Eric ran into the house to watch us. Too dirty to enter his room, he observed with wide-eyed enthusiasm from the doorway. As my father slipped a pillowcase onto one of the p illows, Eric asked, “What is that?”“A pillow,” he replied.“What do you do with it?” Eric continued to ask.“When you go to sleep, you put your head on it,” I answered softly. Tears came to my eyes as my father handed Eric the pillow.“Oh…that’s soft,” he said, hugging it tightly. Now, when my sister or I start to ask for something that seems urgent, my dad gently asks, “Do you have a pillow?”We know exactly what he means.1. The writer’s first volunteer project was ______.A. working on a poor trailerB. helping a poor familyC. donating beds and beddingD. dealing with a housing problem2. On hearing Josh’s answer, the writer was shocked because ______.A. the family lived in a trailerB. he expected to get some toysC. he didn’t know what a bed wasD. the boys had no bed to sleep in3. From the passage, we can learn that Eric had never seen ______ before.A. a trailerB. a truckC. a pillowD. a house4. By saying “Do you have a pillow?”, the writer’s father means that ______.A. what they want to get may be unnecessaryB. they should not waste money on small thingsC. they should do more volunteer work for the poorD. what he will buy is not what they want but a pillowIII.新题型:七选五__1___ .Being angry doesn’t really solve much, but what people do when they feel angry is important. Robert Lynd “Conventional people,” says Mr. Bertrand Russell, 1 “like to pretend that difficulties in regard to marriage are a new thing.” I could not help wondering, as I read this sentence, where one can meet these conventional people who think, or pretend to think, as conventional people do. I have known hundreds of conventional people, and I cannot remember one of them who thought the things conventional people seem to think. Unit 13 Our schedules, our selves练习答案综合教程三
Unit13 Our Schedules, Our SelvesKey to the ExercisesText comprehensionI. Decide which of the following best states the purpose of the essay.BII. Judge, according to the text, whether the following statements are true or false.1. T (Refer to Paragraphs 1, 2 and 3.)2. F (Refer to Paragraph3. Some of what fills our days are onerous obligations, some are wonderful opportunities, and most fall in between.)3. T (Refer to Paragraph4.)4. F (Refer to Paragraph5. While direct communication can loosen our schedules in certain instances [it's easier to shift around an engagement on short notice], overall they fuel the trend that every minute must be accounted for.)5. T (Refer to Paragraphs 12 and 13.)III. Answer the following questions.1. Refer to Paragraphs 2 and 3. Our lives have been too meticulously mapped out and filled with too many orders and plans. As there is too much to do, too many places to be, too many things happening too fast, and no time for an idle moment or a reflective pause, we are not able to enjoy the beauty of life. It seems that we are not leading our lives, but merely following a dizzying timetable of duties, commitments, demands, and options.2. Refer to Paragraph 4. According to the author, the acceleration of the globalized economy, and the accompanying decline of people having any kind of a say over wages and working conditions, is the chief culprit. Poor people or people at the bottom of the socio-economic ladder feel the pain most sharply; they often feel out of control of everything happening to them. However, even successful professionals feel the pressure.3. Refer to Paragraphs 5 and 6. Besides the acceleration of the globalized economy, there are two other factors that result in overscheduling our life. The first is the onslaught of new technology, which promised to set us free but has instead ratcheted up the rhythms of everyday life. And the second is our own human desire for more choices and new experiences.4. Refer to Paragraphs 7 and 8. As the 24 hours allotted to us each day are fully booked, something is lost in our life. We don't just run into a friend anymore; we can't happily savor an experience because our mind races toward the next plan on the calendar. There's no time left for those magic, spontaneous moments that make us feel most alive.5. Refer to Paragraphs 9?3. Yes, we can get ourselves free from the burden of schedules. According to the radical Brazilian educator Paulo Freire, "We are bigger than our schedules." And one of the solutions the author proposes is political, or to shorten the working week as many political activists have pressed for. The other solution is personal. The author suggests that we sometimes shuck schedules and scrap plans for spontaneous moments.IV. Explain in your own words the following sentences.1. New technology has arrived in an explosive manner and produced a significant impact on our way of life. It should have saved us from routine, as it enables us to do our work more efficiently, but in fact it has subjected us even more to plans, as it has made scheduling easier.2. Our life has been filled up with plans, so full that we have lost our spare time and the chance for any natural and spontaneous activities. Our life, therefore, seems boring and meaningless.3. Be sure to set aside some free moments, hours or even days, and you must not be tempted to fill them with any appointments.Structural analysis of the textIn the two transitional paragraphs (Paragraphs 9 and 10) the author not only reveals his opinion on this problem -- "We are bigger than our schedules," but also brings us to his suggested solution which is presented in the last part of the essay.Rhetorical features of the textDetermined and sternly focused, we march through each day obeying the orders of our calendars. So this sentence means that they are not young any longer, and they are getting old.3. They do not do things as they might have been ready to do at twenty. We found so many surprises in school, and apart from that, we also enjoyed the company of each other very much. We appreciated this kind of friendship intensely, just like what we felt for our lovers when we were in love or for the baby when we were pregnant.Structural analysis of the textThis text can be divided into three parts. Part I (para 1) is the opening remark in which the author reveals to us her opinion of herself, that is, she thinks she is quite different from others. Part II (para 2-14) is the body of this article in which the author elaborates on the kind of friends she has, the effect of their friendship on her life, her attitude toward people, and her world-view. Part III(para 15) is the closing remarks in which the author reiterates the effects of having friends, that is, you can become really different from other people even when u are old.Rhetorical features of the textExample one:”… we delved in this newly-found camaraderie with an intensity we did not know we could achieve outside of love and pregnacies”(para 7). The third “we” here is the subject if an attributive clause which is used to modify the antecedent phrase “this newly-found camaraderie” while the second “we” is the subject of a clause which is added to give some more information.Example two:” We had, in fact, created a sort of bubble around us, a magic circle that follows us still and says we are bright, successful, caring, ambitious, and finally, ready to change the world”(para 9).
