There are many varieties and grades of paper materials, and whilst it is fairly easy to spot the varieties, it is far more difficult to spot the grades.B) It needs to be understood that most paper and card is manufactured for a specific purpose, so that whilst the corn-flake packet may look smart, it is clearly not something destined for the archives. It is made to look good, but only needs a limited life span. It is also much cheaper to manufacture than high grade card.C) Paper can be made from an almost endless variety ofcellulose-based material which will include many woods, cottons and grasses or which papyrus is an example and from where we get the word "paper". Many of these are very specialized, but the preponderance of paper making has been from soft wood and cotton or rags, with the bulk being wood-based.Paper from WoodD) In order to make wood into paper it needs to be broken down into fine strands. Firstly by powerfulmachinery and then boiled with strong alkalies such as caustic soda, until a fine pulp of cellulose fibers is produced. It is from this pulp that the final product is made, relying on the bonding together of the cellulose into layers. That, in a very small nutshell, is the essence of paper making from wood. However, the reality is rather more complicated. In order to give us our white paper and card, the makers will addbleach and other materials such as china clay and additional chemicals.E) A further problem with wood is that it contains a material that is not cellulose. Something calledlignin. This is essential for the tree since it holds the cellulose fibres together, but if it is incorporated into the manufactured paper it presents archivists with a problem. Lignin eventually breaks down and releases acid products into the paper. This will weaken the bond between the cellulose fibers and the paper will become brittle and look ratherbrown and careworn. We have all seen this in old newspapers and cheap paperback books. It has been estimated that most paper back books will have a life of notgreater than fifty years. Not what we need for our archives.F) Since the lignin can be removed from the paper pulp during manufacture, the obvious question is "why is it left in the paper?" The answer lies in the fact that lignin makes up a considerable part of the tree. By leaving the lignin in the pulp a papermaker can increase his paper yield from a tree to some 95%. Removing it means a yield of only 35%. It is clearly uneconomic to remove the lignin for many paper and card applications.G) It also means, of course, that lignin-free paper is going to be more expensive, but that is nevertheless what the archivist must look for in his supplies. There is no point whatsoever in carefully placing our valuable artifacts in paper or card that is going to hasten their demise. Acid is particularly harmful to photographic materials, causing them to fade and is some cases simply vanish!H) So, how do we tell a piece of suitable paper or card from one that is unsuitable? You cannot do it by simply looking, and rather disappointingly, you cannot always rely on the label. "Acid-free" might be true inasmuch as a test on the paper may indicate that it is a neutral material at this time. But lignin can take years beforeit starts the inevitable process of breaking down, and in the right conditions it will speed up enormously.I) Added to this, as I have indicated earlier, paper may also contain other materials added during manufacture such as bleach, china clay, chemical whiteners and size. This looks like a bleak picture, and it would be but for the fact that there are suppliers who will guarantee the material that they sell. If you want to be absolutely sure that you are storing in, or printing on, the correct material then this is probably the only way.J) Incidentally, acids can migrate from material to material. Lining old shoe boxes with good quality acid-free paper will do little to guard the contents. The acid will get there in the end. Paper from RagK) Paper is also commonly made from cotton and rag waste. This has the advantage of being lignin-free, but because there is much less cotton and rag than trees, it also tends to be much more expensive than wood pulp paper. You will still need to purchase from a reliable source though, since even rag paper and card can contain undesirable additives.L) A reliable source for quality rag papers is a recognized art stockiest. Many water color artists insist on using only fine quality rag paper and board.M) The main lesson to learn from this information is that you cannot rely on purchasing archival materials from the high street. The only safe solution is to purchase from specialist suppliers. It may cost rather more, but in the end you will know that your important and valuable data and images have the best home possible.1. The corn-flake packet is cheaper than high grade card.2. There are a lot of materials which can be used for making paper, but the superiority ones are soft wood, cotton and rags.3. During the whole manufacturing process, the final product is made from a pulp of cellulose fibres.4. In order to make white paper and card, the makers will add bleach.5. Liguin is essential for the tree but it will make paper easy to break.6. Many paper producers will preserve lignin during manufacture, because leaving the lignin will make more paper from a tree.7. Acid is particularly harmful to photographic materials.8. If the lignin is removed from the paper, the paper will be more expensive.9. Although free of lignin, paper made from cotton and rag waste can also cost more money than wood pulp paper because there is much less cotton and rag than trees.10. What we can learn from "Paper from Rag" is that you had better buy archival materials from specialist suppliers.

We aim education on different levels at cultivating the to-be successors of our global village. One important goal that education is trying to achieve is help students master the ways to acquire knowledge.Of all the capabilities one can develop to acquire knowledge in being educated, three sorts are of the greatest significance.First of all, students who are receiving education definitely know that they are always ignorant of some branches in th eocean of knowledge, which can keep them modest and more willing to explore their unfamiliar realms, even deeper if theyve already done so. Moreover, students can imitate what their teachers or professors do in or our of class and then gradually acquire the ability to undertake more scientific re-search and intellectual inquiries alone. Last but not least, youngsters who are accustomed to being educated at school or college are more likely to keep studying as a life-long habit, which will have a substantially positive effect on their own life and the future of the human world. In my perspective, education is one of the most marvelous social inventions that ever existed in human history. Without it, the whole globe can never continue developing further in a civilized and prosperous direction.2023六月英语六级作文:心理健康Mental well-being is regarded as a state of health wherea person is able to address normal stresses in daily life.

5w1h<who, what, when, where, which, how)等因素来进行锁定。

1C)Teachers should show endurance.D)Teachers can make quick adjustment.E)Teachers should never stop learning.F)Teachers should identify with students.G)Teachers’ duties are given by government. Here I want to try to give you an answer to the question:What personal qualities are desirable in a teacher?Probably mp two people would draw up exactly similar lists, but I think the following would be generally accepted.41____________________First,the teacher’s personality should be pleasantly live and attractive. This does not rule out people who are physically plain,or even ugly, because many such have great personal charm. But it does rule out such type as the over-excitable,melancholy,frigid,sarcastic,cynical,frustrated,and over-bearing:I would say too, that it excludes all of dull or purely negative personality.I still stick to what I said in my earlier book:“that school children probably suffer more from ‘bores than from brutes’”.42.___________________________Secondly,it is not merely desirable but essential for a teacher to have genuine capacity for sympathy---in the literal meaning of that word:a capacity to tune into the minds and feelings ofother people, especially, since most teachers are school teachers,to the minds and feelings of children.Closely related with this is the capacity to be tolerant--- not, indeed,of what is wrong, but of the frailty and immaturity of human nature which induce people and again especially children,to make mistakes.43.________________Thirdly,I hold it essential for a teacher to be both intellectually and morally honest. This does not mean being a plaster saint. It means that he will be aware of his intellectual strengths and limitations, and will have thought about and decided upon the moral principles by which his life shall be guided. There is no contradiction in my going on to say that a teacher should be a bit of an actor. That is part of the technique of teaching, which demands that every now and then a teacher should be able to put on an act--- to enliven a lesson, correct a fault,or award praise.Children, especially young children, live in a world that is rather larger than life.44.______________A teacher must remain mentally alert. He will not get into the profession if of low intelligence, but it is all too easy, even for people of above- average intelligence,to stagnate intellectually ---and that means to deteriorate intellectually.A teacher must be quick to adapt himself to any situation, however improbable and able to improvise,if necess ary at less than a moment’s notice.45.________________________On the other hand,a teacher must be capable of infinite patience. This,I ust say,is largely a matter of self-discipline and self-training; we are none of us born like that.He must be pretty resilient; teaching makes great demands on nervous energy. And should be able to take in his stride the innumerable prettyirritations any adult dealing with children has to endure. Finally,I think a teacher should have the kind of mind which always wants to go on learning.Teaching is a job at which one will never be perfect; there is always something more to learn about it.There are three principal objects of study:the subject,or subjects, which the teacher is teaching; the method by which they can best be taught to the particular pupils in the classes he is teaching; and ---by far the most important---the children, young people,or adults to whom they are to be taught. The two cardinal principles of British education today are that education is education of the whole person, and that it is best acquired through full and active co-operation between two persons, the teacher and the learner.Passage 4Directions:You are going to read a list of headings and a about teaching a second language.Choose the most suitable heading from the list A-F for each numbered paragraph (41-45).The first and last paragraphs of the are not numbered. There are two extra headings which you do not need to use.Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET l.(10 points)A)Asking for parental involvementB)Setting up small groupsC)Making classroom events predictableD)Extending the patterns of classroom communicationsE)Supporting students’ use of language for second language acquisitionF)Encouraging students to use modelsG)Allowing variability in the patterns of classroom communicationsHow to Teach a Second LanguageIt should be evident that the way in which the patterns of communication are established and maintained in second language classroom is not random.Teachers,by virtue of the status they hold and the ways they use language, have the authority to retain control over both the content and structure of classroom communication. At times, teachers tightly control the topic of discussion, what counts as relevant to that topic, who may participate and when.At other times, teachers grant a varying degree of control to their students by allowing them to select when and how they will participate. Thus, the patterns of classroom communication depend largely on how teachers use language to control the structure and content of classroom events. 2Recently,as I watched my son Nathan play basketball for his school team,I was feeling sorry for myself and for him.His team was facing adversity(困境)on the court, trailing for to be solved in many countries. In the United States,Walmart,a large chain store,is trying to help.It is offeringsomething new to its employees:cutting the cost of a doctor’s appointment(预约)to only $4 instead of the usual $40 for the same service.Walmart is the latest major business in the United States to push its workers toward a high-tech way to be examined and treated by doctors. Thanks to designate thing or process which have no names in ordinary English, and partly to secure greater exactness in nomenclature.Such special dialects,or jargons, are necessary in technical discussion of any kind.Being universally understood by the divorce of particular science or art, they have the precision of mathematical formula.Besides, they save time, for it is much more economical to name a process than to describe it.Thousands of this terms are popularly included in every large dictionary, yet,as a whole, they are rather on the outskirts of English language than actuallywithin its borders.Different occupations, however, differ widely in the character of their special vocabularies. In trades and handicrafts, and other vocations, like farming and fishery, they have occupied great number of men from remote times, the technical vocabulary,is very old.It consists largely of native words,or of borrowed words that have worked themselves into the very fiber of our language.Hence, though highly technical in many particulars, these vocabularies are more familiar in sound; and more generally understood, than most other technicalities. The special dialects of law, medicine, divinity, and philosophy have also,in their old strata, become pretty familiar to cultivated persons, and have contributed much to the popular vocabulary.Yet every vocation still possesses a large body of technical terms that remain essentially foreign, even to educated speech. And the proportion has been much increased in the last fifty years, particularly in the various departments of natural and political science and in the mechanic arts. Here new terms are coined with the greatest freedom, and abandoned with indifference when they have served their turn. Most of the new coinages are confined to special discussions, and seldom get into general literature or conversation.Yet no profession is nowadays,as all professions once were,a close guild. The lawyer, the physician, the man of science, the divine, associates freely with his fellow-creatures,and does not meet them in a merely professional way.Furthermore, what is called popular science makes everybody acquainted with modern views and recent discovers.Any important experiment, thought made in remote or provincial laboratory,is at once reported in the newspapers, and everybody is soon talking about it—as in thecase of the Roentgen rays and wireless telegraphy. Thus our common speech is always taking up new technical terms and making them commonplace.1.This passage is primarily concerned with _______.[A]a new language[B]technical terminology[C]various occupations and professions[D]scientific undertakings2.Special words used in technical discussion_________.[A]may become part of common speech[B]should be __________.[A]farming[B]government[C]botany[D]fishing5.The author‘s main purpose in the passage is to _________.[A]describe a phenomenon[B]argue a belief[C]propose a solution[D]stimulate actionPassage ThreeDuring the second half of the nineteenth century,in the United States both the stimulus to produce landscape art and the subject of landscape altered appreciably as the pressure of events surrounding the Civil War witnessed the emergence of a new national consciousness. It was a time when certain fundamental religious beliefs were assaulted by new scientific theory and when new critical writing, particularly those of John Ruskin, exercised an important influence on art.The landscape painting from the Ganz collection provides an opportunity to examine the shifts in taste and the pluralities of style that characterized American Landscape painting, especially in the latter part of the century. In the early years of the nineteenth century American Landscape was closely associated with the republican ideals of the new nation and took on significance in the popular imagination as a form of national ndscape painting was conceived of as a vehicle for the presentation of the new republic‘s unique historical and moral position in world history. This position was supported by Thomas Cole, the dean of the Hudson river School, and was based on a religious interpretation of wilderness themes. While the American concern for the founding of a school of historical landscape was most assertive in the first half of the century and was confirmed in such grandly ambitious paintings as Café’s famous instructive moral oneportraying the COURSE OF EMPIRE,the interest in crating anational art based on American nature continued to influence the formal evolution of landscape painting.6.with what topic is the passage primarily concerned?[A]The normal position of the United States.[B]John Ruskin's influence on nineteenth century art.[C]A religious interpretation of wilderness themes.[D]The evolution of landscape painting in the United States7.What phenomenon does the author mention as occurring at the time of the Civil War?[A]The revival of fundamental religious painting of the Hudson River School.9.According to the author, landscape painting early in the nineteenth century was used to _________.[A]finance a school of historical landscape painting[B]further

1. Most expensive restaurants will add a 10% service charge to the bill.
2. Though tipping is not allowed, people who have served you accept tips in a certain way.
3.Culturally, tipping is unnecessary, but customers sometimes pay service charge when checking
out.
4. If you want to get loyal service, you should give a tip more than 10%.
5. You ae not expected to pay tips at a low class hotel.
A
Bangkok (曼谷)There are no established rules of tipping in Bangkok, capital of Thailand. Some places expect it; others don’t. In general, the more westernized the place is, the more likely you’ll be expected to leave a tip.
Restaurants: Some expensive restaurants will add a 10% service charge to the bill. If not, waiters will appr eciate your increasing by 10% yourself. However, if you’re eating at a cheap eatery, a ti is not necessary.
Porters: At Bangkok’s many five-star hotels, you’re expected to tip the porter 20 to 50 baht(铢), depending on how many bags you have.
Taxis: Taxis are now metered in Bangkok, so there’s no bargaining over your fare. The local custom is to round the fare up to the nearest five baht.
B
Jakarta (雅加达)Tipping is not part of the Indonesian culture, but international influences have turned some westernized palms upward in search of a few extra rupiah (卢比).
Restaurants: A 10% service charge is added at most high-end restaurants. At moderately priced restaurants, 5,000 rupiah should do it---if the service is superb, add an extra 1,000 rupiah or so.
Porters: Pay a few hundred rupiah for each bag.
Taxis: Most drivers will automatically round up to the next 500 rupiah. Some will claim they have no change and will bleed you for more. Don’t accept anything more than a 1,000-rupiah increase.
C
Kuala Lumpur (吉隆坡)Like Indonesia, tipping in Malaysia is only common in the expensive westernized joints, which often add a 10% service charge to your meal or hotel bill.
Restaurants: If you are at a hotel restaurant, expect a 10% service charge or add the same amount yourself. But at local stalls, there’s no need to add a tip.
Porters: At five-star hotels, one or two ringgit(林吉特) will be enough. At low-end establishments, you are not forced to tip.
Taxis: Many taxis are now metered, so you can just round up to the nearest ringgit. In unmetered taxis, expect a session of hard bargaining for the ride.
D
Manila (马尼拉)Tipping is common in Manila, the Philippines, and anything above 10% will
gain you long-lasting loyalty.
Restaurants: Even if a service charge is included, it is a custom to add another 5%-10% to the bill.
Porters: Service in top hotels is good and should be rewarded with 20% pesos(比索) per bag.
Taxis: Most taxis are metered, and rounding up to the next five pesos is a good rule of taking taxis.
E
Seoul Tipping is not part of the Korean culture, although it has become a rule in international hotels where a 10% service charge is often added.
Restaurants: If you are at a Korean barbecue (烧烤店), there’s no need to add anything extra. But a luxury Italian restaurant may require a 10% service charge.
Porters: If you are at a top-end hotel, international standards apply, so expect to tip 500-1,000 won per bag.
Taxis: Drivers don’t expect a tip, so unless you’re feeling remarkably generous, keep the change for yourself.
F
Singapore City According to government rules in the Lion City, tipping is a no-no. It’s basically outlawed at Changi Airport and officials encourage tourists to neglect the 10% service charge that many high-end hotels add to the bill.
Restaurants: Singaporeans tend not to leave tips, especially at the outdoor eateries. Nicer restaurants do sometimes charge a 10% service fee, but there’s no need to supplement that.
Porters: Hotel staff are the one exception to the no-tipping rule. As a general guide, S$1 would be enough for baggage-lugging service.
Taxis: Drivers don’t expect tips, but they won’t refuse if you want to round up the fare to the next Singaporean dollar.
