At this stage nearly all the teachers are women, mostly married. The atmosphere is usually very friendly , and the teachers have now accepted the idea that the important thing is to make the children happy and interested. The old authoritarian (要绝对服从的) methods of education were discredited (不被认可) rather a long time ago--so much so that many people now think that they have gone too far in the direction of trying to make children happy and interested rather than giving them actual instruction. The social education of young children tries to make them accept the idea that human beings in a society need to work together for their common good. So the emphasis is on co-operation rather than competitionthroughout most of this process. This may seem curious, in view of the fact that American society is highly competitive; however, the need for making people sociable in this sense has come to be regarded as one of the functions of education. Most Americans do grow up with competitive ideas, and obviously quite a few as criminals, but it is not fair to say that the educational system fails. It probably does succeed in making most people sociable and ready to help one another both in material ways and through kindness and friendliness.16. According to the passage, the U.S. elementary education is supposed to make children _____.A. sensible and sensitiveB. competitive and interestedC. curious and friendlyD. happy and co-operative17. Young men will never again go to war as they did in 1914. Millions of people now have seen the effects of a battle. And the result has been a general dislike of war, and perhaps more interest in helping those who suffer from all the terrible things that have been shown on the screen.Television has also changed politics. The most distant areas can now follow state affairs, see and hear the politicians before an election. Better informed, people are more likely to vote, and so to make their opinion count.Unfortunately, television’s influence has been extremely harmful to the young. Children do nothave enough experience to realize that TV shows present an unreal world; that TV advertisements lie to sell products that are sometimes bad or useless. They believe that the violence they see is normal and acceptable. All edu cators agree that the “television generations” are more violent than their parents and grandparents. Also, the young are less patient. Used to TV shows, where everything is quick and interesting, they do not have the patience to read an article without pictures; to read a book that requires thinking; to listen to a teacher who doesn’t do funny things like the people on children’s programs. And they expect all problems to be solved happily in ten, fifteen, or thirty minutes. That’s the time it takes on the screen.11. In the past, many young people ______.A. knew the effects of warB. went in for politicsC. liked to save the wounded in warsD. were willing to be soldiers12. Now with TV people can _____.A. discuss politics at an information centerB. show more interest in politicsC. make their own decisions on political affairsD. express their opinions freely13. The author thinks that TV advertisements _____.A. are not reliable on the wholeB. are useless to peopleC. are a good guide to adultsD. are very harmful to the young14. Which is NOT true according to the passage?A. People have become used to crimes now.B. With a TV set some problems can be solved quickly.C. People now like to read books with pictures.D. The adults are less violent than the young.15. From the passage, we can conclude that _____.A. children should keep away from TV programs should be improvedC. children’s books should have picturesD. TV has a deep influence on the youngPassage 2Nonverbal (非语言的) communication has to do with gestures, movements and closeness of two people when they are talking. The scientists say that those gestures, movements and so on have meaning which words do not carry. For example, the body distance between two speakers can be important. North Americans often complain that South Americans are unfriendly because they tend to stand close to the North American when speaking, while the South American often considers the North American to be “cold” or “distant” because he keeps a greater dis tance between himself and the person he is speaking to . The “eye contact” provides another example of what we are calling nonverbal communication. Scientists have observed that there is more eye contact between people who like each other than there is bet ween people who don’t like each other. The length of time that the person whom you are speaking to looks at your eyes indicates the amount of interest he has in the things you are talking about. On the other hand, too long a gaze can make people uncomfortable. The eyes apparently play a great part in nonverbal communication. Genuine warmth or interest, shyness or confidence can often be seen in the eyes. We do not always consider a smile to be a sign of friendliness. Someone who is always smiling, and with little apparent reasons, often makes us uneasy.16. According to the passage, nonverbal communication _____.A. is a method often used by people who cannot speakB. can tell something that words cannotC. can be used to talk with people who cannot bearD. is less used than words17. The South American _____.A. tends to keep a distance between himself and the person he is speaking toB. usually stands close to the person he is talking toC. is often unfriendly when spoken toD. is often cold and distant when speaking18. Which of the following is NOT true?A. Less eye contact suggests distance in relation.B. The longer one looks at you, the more interest he has in you.C. There is more eye contact between people who like each other.D. Shorter eye contact shows more interest in what one is talking about.19. Too long a gaze _____.A. may upset people being looked atB. shows one’s great confidenceC. indicates one’s interest in the talkD. tells you how friendly one is20. Constant smiling without apparent reason _____.A. is a sign of one’s friendlinessB. is a sign of one’s unfriendlinessC. makes people feel happyD. makes people feel uncomfortablePassage 3My husband had just bought a new washing machine for me. I decided to use it and I washed alot of things.Everything worked well, but I found one of my husband's socks missing. I looked everywhere for it, but I couldn't find it anywhere. The next morning, I got ready for school as usual. When the bell rang, the students came in. I greeted them first and then told them what we were going to do that day. When I turned around to write on the blackboard, the class broke out a roar! They laughed and laughed. They laughed so much, in fact, that I was afraid the headmaster would be into seeing all this.I asked the class to stop, but the more I talked, the more they laughed. So the emphasis is on co-operation rather than competition throughout most of this process. The book The Origin of Species by Charles Darwin is probably one of the most famous books ever written by a scientist. Yet it is a book which the writer did not want to publish; he only agreed to make his theory known to the public when he was forced to by his friends. In 1831, the British Government sent a ship called Beagle to South America to make maps of the coast. At that time, Darwin w as a young man in his twenties who had studied science in Edinburgh and Cambridge. Through a friend, he was offered the job of studying the plants and animals of the different countries that the Beagle was to visit. Darwin’s father told him not to go, an d the captain of the Beagle said that he did not like the shape of Darwin’s nose; but that did not stop him, and in December of that year, Darwin sailed for South America. He spent five years on the ship, collecting many samples and writing down his obs ervations about the living things he found. When he returned to England, he tried to work out a theory to explain what he had observed. It was clear that many species w ere connected with each other in some way, without being exactly the same. Why was this? Two years after his return, he deve loped a theory: only the strongest or the cleverest could survive difficult conditions. Over time, the species changes slowly to fi t the environment. Different environments produce different species.(17.5分)

Among them, tourist industry is one of the biggest industries of this kin d. Providing transportation and accommodations for tourists — and guides, brochures, souvenirs — is one of the major industri es in many countries. This season, however, 20 percent of NBA rosters (花名册) will be filled by non-Americans. NBA commissioner D avid Stern happily embraces the trend. On a visit to Paris in October, Stern outlined his vision for the future, which is likely to s ee Europe hosting NBA games by 2010.The NBA is now planning to take China by storm.“Our experience in China has been that it is going to be explosive in its growth,” said Stern. The strategy in China is TV. “We’ve made 14 deals in China with local and national networks on cable and satellite.” The success Chinese centre Yao Ming has pave d the way for the NBA marketing blitz in China. The NBA, which is broadcasted in more than 200 countries in 42 languages, wil l put that to the test in October 2004 when the Houston Rockets play two pre-season games against the Sacramento Kings in Beijing market to compensate for tough times on home soil.“It doesn’t matter where the players come from, all the NBA teams now know that they have to scout (寻找) internationally,” s aid Terry Lyons, the NBA’s vice-president of international public relations. “It has increased the level of competition here.” As Fr enchman Tony Parker and Argentine Emanuel Ginobili showed in winning championship rings with the San Antonio Spurs last s eason, many people can earn the respect of their America peers. Others, such as Houston Rockets’ Chinese centre Yao Ming—No.1 draft pick in 2002—and the Detroit Pistons’ 18-year-old Serb Darko Milicic—number two overall in this year’s draft—are ic ons (偶像) in waiting. It is the ultimate (根本的) revolution—the rest of the world teaching the US how to play basketball.(17.5分)26). According to the report, _________________________.(3.5分)(A) Michael Jordan is still playing a very important role in NBA(B) the part played by the foreign players in NBA will be great(C) NBA offers courses to the world about playing basketball(D) Paris will host the 2010 NBA games参考答案:B27). The underlined phrase “take China by storm” has the meaning of ____________.(3.5分)(A) NBA intends to make China its “marketing center”(B) NBA is planning to set up some training centers in China.(C) there’ll be a big storm when NBA comes to China to play against the Sacramento Kings(D) the NBA’s live basketball games will be broadcasted on all the television channels in China参考答案:A28). What seems to be the biggest change that is happening to NBA?(3.5分)(A) NBA is getting more and more globalized.(B) China’s rapid development in sports affects NBA.(C) Yao Ming has taken the place of Jordan.(D) NBA cannot maintain its high level of competition now参考答案:A29). When the writer talked of “home soil”, he was referring to ______________________.(3.5分)(A) farms in the States(B) native Americans(C) the NBA training center(D) the USA参考答案:D30). Which of the following can be used as the best title for the passage?(3.5分)(A) The Non-American Basketball Players(B) NBA is Coming to China(C) The Foreign Ties that Bind the NBA(D) NBA is Making Big Progress参考答案:CThe British psychoanalyst John Bowlby maintains that separation from the parents during the sensitive“attachment” period fro m birth to three may scar a child’s personality and I predispose to emotional problems in later life. Some people have drawn t he conclusion from Bowlby’s work that children should not be subjected to day care before the age of three because of the par ental separation it entails, and many people do believe this. But there are also arguments against such a strong conclusion. F irstly, anthropologists point out that the insulated love affair between children and parents;found in modem societies does no t usually exist in traditional societies. For example,in some tribal societies, such as the Ngoni, the father and mother of a ch ild did not rear their infant alone—far from it'.Secondly, common sense tells US that day care would not be so widespread to day if parents care-takers found children had problems with it.Statistical studies of this kind have not yet been carried out,a nd even if they were, the results would be certain to be complicated and controversial.Thirdly.in the last decade there have been a number of careful American studies of children in day care, and they have uniformly reported that day care had a neur al or slightly positive effect on children’s development. But tests that have had to be used to measure this development are no t widely enough accepted to settle the issue. But Bowlby’s analysis raises the possibility that early day care has delayed effects. The possibility that such care might lead t o,say, more mental illness or crime 15 or 20 years later can only be explored by the use of statistics.Whatever the long—te rm effects, parents sometimes find the immediate effects difficult to deal with。

Some of the greatest men in history had thought about the problem. One of them, for example, was the great Italian artist, Leonardo Da Vinci. In the sixteenth century he made designs for machines that would fly, but they were never built.Throughout history, other less famous men had wanted to fly. An example was a man in England 800 years ago. He made a pair of wings from chicken feathers. Then he fixed them to his body and jumped into air from a tall building. He did not fly very far. Instead, he fell to the ground and broke every bone in his body. The first real steps took place in France, in 1783. Two brothers, the Montgolfiers, made a very large "hot air balloon". They knew that hot air rises. Why not fill a balloon with it? The balloon was made of cloth and paper. In September of that year, the King and Queen of France came to see the balloon. They watched it carry the very first air passengers into the sky. The passengers were a sheep and a chicken. We do not know how they felt about the trip. But we do know that the trip lasted eight minutes and that the animals landed safely. Two months later, two men did the same thing. They rose above Paris in a balloon of the same kind. Their trip lasted twenty-five minutes and they traveled about eight kilometers.(1)、Leonardo Da Vinci made designs for flying machines. AA:TB:F(2)、Eight hundred years ago an Englishman made a kind of flying machine. BA:TB:F(3)、In fact, the Englishman who tried to fly lost his life. AA:TB:F(4)、The very first air passengers in the balloon were two Frenchmen. BA:TB:F(5)、The two Frenchmen rose above Paris in November 1783. AA:TB:F2. In 1920, barely out of his teens, Alfred Hitchcock went to work for an American film company which had opened a studio in Islington, London. His first job at the studio was writing captions (脚本)for silent movies. Within two years, he was writing scripts(剧本)and working as an assistant director. For the rest of the 1920s, Hitchcock worked on one film after another in Britain and Germany. Filming was often a rough-and-ready(匆忙做成的)affair and the assistant director was required to step in and plug gaps. A cameraman went missing, Hitchcock became a cameraman. A scene needed rewriting, Hitchcock rewrote it. Someone needed to be in charge of money when the film crew was on location, Hitchcock looked after the money. At the same time, this being the era of silent movies, Hitchcock was learning the language of cinema: telling a story-not through dialogue, but through visual images(视觉影象). This led to his success later. When he began to direct his own films, first in Britain and later in Hollywood, he was determined to make films that held the audience's attention and kept tension(紧张感). He succeeded. Hitchcock's ability to put you on the edge of your seat makes him one of the greatest makers of suspense(悬念)movies.(1)、Alfred Hitchcock's first job at the studio was writing captions for silent movies. AA:TB:F(2)、According to the context, "step in and plug gaps" (in Line 3, Para. 2) means asking for one's help. B A:TB:F(3)、Telling a story through dialogue prepared Hitchcock for his success later. BA:TB:F(4)、He was determined to draw the audience's attention and keep tension in his film-making. AA:TB:F(5)、He had taken up different jobs before he succeeded. AA:TB:F3、One day in 1965, when I was a library worker at school, a teacher came to me. She had a student who finished his work before all the others and needed something more difficult for him to do. "Could you help me in the library?" she asked. I said, "Send him along."Soon, a golden-haired boy appeared. "Do you have a job for me?" he asked. I told him about a system for sorting books. He picked up the idea immediately. Then I showed him some cards for some unreturned books that I thought had been returned but not recorded. Maybe some books were put on wrong places. He said, "Is it a kind of a detective (侦探)job?" I answered yes, and then began his work.He had found three books with wrong cards by the time his teacher opened the door and said, "Time for rest!" he argued for finishing the finding job, but the teacher won.The next morning, he arrived early, "I want to finish these books," he said. At the end of the day, when he asked to work with me more often, it was easy for me to say yes. After a few weeks I found a note on my desk, inviting me to dinner at the boy's home. At the end of a pleasant evening, his mother declared that the family would be moving to another school. Her son's first concern, she said, was leaving the library. "Who will find the lost books?" he asked. When the time came, it was hard to say goodbye. Though at the beginning he had seemed an ordinary boy, his strong feeling of interest had made him different.Do you know who he is? This boy became a great man of the Information Age: Bill Gates.(1)、Why did the teacher go to the library to find a job for Bill Gates? CA:Because the teacher found the librarian quite busy.B:Because Bill Gates wanted to find a job.C:Because Bill Gates finished his study quickly and had more free time than the others.D:Because the library needed a new worker.(2)、What do you know from the passage? 大学英语作文:ThreeStagesoftheWritingProcess写作的步骤

大学英语作文:Three Stages of the Writing Process写作的步骤The whole writingprocess can be divided into three stages: prewriting, writing, and rewriting. In the prewriting stage, we try to get dear inour mind what our specific approach to the subject should be, what kind of materials we need, how these materials should beorganized and presented to the particular reader we have these in mind. In short, we plan the organization and the content ofour projected paper. In the writing stage, execute the plan bywriting the first draft. In rewriting, we examine what we havedone and consider where and how the first draft can be improved. The three stages are not always separated as the previousparagraph may suggest. Sometimes, of course, they are separated, especially in working on long research papers. We mayprepare extensive notes and draw several outlines before we begin the first draft, and then, perhaps days later, we may do athorough revision of the draft. But sometimes, especially in writing short papers, we may plan and revise as we write. Andoften we may modify our original plan during the writing stage, as the actual writing modifies our ideas.三个阶段的写作过程(写作过程三步骤)汉浯提示:请写一篇150字左右的文章,说明写作过程三步骤:构思,写作和修改。
