Projects, resources, expectations and deadlines are all outcomes of negotiation. Some people negotiate deals for a living. Dr Herb Cohen is one of these professional talkers, called in by companies to negotiate on their??behalf . He approaches the art of negotiation as a game because, as he is usually negotiating for somebody else, he says this helps him drain the emotional content from his conversation. He is working in a competitive field and needs to avoid being too adversarial. Whether he succeeds or not, it is important to him to make a good impression so that people will recommend him.The starting point for any deal, he believes, is to identify exactly what you want from each other. More often than not, one party will be trying to persuade the other round to their point of view. Negotiation requires two people at the end saying ‘yes”. This can be a problem because one of them usually begins by saying “no”. However, although this can make talks more difficult, this is often just a starting point in the negotiation game. Top management may well reject the idea initially because it is the safer option but they would not be there if they were not interested. It is a misconception that skilled negotiators are smooth operators in smart suits. Dr Cohen says that one of his strategies is to dress down so that the other side can relate to you. Pitchyour look to suit your customer. You do not need to make them feel better than you but, For example, dressing in a style that is not overtly expensive or successful will make you more approachable. People will generally feel more comfortable with somebody who appears to be like them rather than superior to them. They may not like you but they will feel they can trust you.Dr Cohen suggests that the best way to sell your proposal is by getting into the world of the other side. Ask questions rather than give answers and take an interest in what the other person is saying, even if you think what they are saying is silly. You do not need to become their best friends but being too clever will alienate them. A lot of deals are made on impressions. Do not rush what you are saying---put a few hesitations in , do not try to blind them with your verbal dexterity. Also, you should repeat back to them what they have said to show you take them seriously.Inevitably some deals will not succeed. Generally the longer the negotiations go on, the better chance they have because people do not want to think their investment and energies have gone to waste. However , joint venture can mean joint risk and sometimes , if this becomes too great , neither party may be prepared to see the deal through . More common is a corporate culture clash between companies, which can put paid to any deal. Even having agreed a deal, things may not be tied up quickly because when the lawyers get involved, everything gets slowed down as they argue about small details.De Cohen thinks that children are the masters of negotiation. Their goals are totally selfish. They understand the decision-making process within families perfectly. If Mum refuses their request , they will troop along to Dad and pressure him. If al elsefails, they will try the grandparents, using some emotional blackmail. They can also be very single-minded and have an inexhaustible supply of energy for the cause they are pursuing. So there are lesson to be learned from watching and listening to children.15 Dr Cohen treats negotiation as a game in order toA put people at easeB remain detachedC be competitiveD impress rivals16 Many people say “no” to a suggestion in the beginning toA convince the other party of their point of viewB show they are not really interestedC indicate they wish to take the easy optionD protect their company’s situation17 Dr Cohen says that when you are trying to negotiate you shouldA adapt your style to the people you are talking toB make the other side feel superior to youC dress in a way to make you feel comfortable.D try to make the other side like you18 According to Dr Cohen, understanding the other person will help you toA gain their friendshipB speed up the negotiationsC plan your next move.Dconvince them of your point of view19 Deals sometimes fail becauseA negotiations have gone on too longB the companies operate in different waysC one party risks more than the other.D the lawyers work too slowly20 Dr Cohen mentions children’s negotiation techniques to show that you shouldA be prepared to try every routeB try not to make people feel guiltyC be careful not to exhaust yourselfD control the decision-making process.关于negotiating techniques的文章。

BEC商务英语(高级)阅读模拟试卷102(题后含答案及解析)题型有:1. PART ONE 2. PART TWO 3. PART THREE 4. PART FOUR 5. PART FIVE 6. PART SIXPART ONELook at the statements below and at the five extracts from an article about characteristics and traits of effective leaders.Which article(A, B, C. D or E)does each statement 1—8 refer to?For each statement 1—8, mark one letter(A, B, C, D or E)on your Answer Sheet. You will need to use some of these letters more than once. There is an example at the beginning, (0).AEffective leaders are noted for the effort they invest in achieving work goals and the passion they have for work and work associates. Drive refers to such behaviors as ambitions, energy, tenacity, and initiative. Drive also includes achievement motivation - finding joy in accomplishment for its own sake. High achievers find satisfaction in competing challenging tasks, attaining high standards, and developing better ways of doing things. Effective leaders are also passionate about their work. Ken Greene, a highly successful franchise operator of Bruegger Bagel Bakery stores, noted, “We love the business and have been very successful.” In contrast, Quality Dining, another major Bruegger franchiser, decided to get out of the business, said Greene, because “they had a very difficult time getting their arms around the emotions and passion of the business.”BPower motivation is a strong desire to control others or get them to do things on your behalf. A leader with a strong power needs enjoy exercising power and using influence tactics. Only a manager who uses power constructively could be promoted rapidly in a modern, well-managed corporation. Bill Gates of Microsoft exemplifies a power-obsessed leader. Although he’s already the richest person in the world and his company dominates its field, he attempts aggressively to either take business away from small competitors or buy them out. His obsession with market domination has contributed to his company’s facing charges of unfair ontinuing waves of downsizings, coupled with generous compensation boosts to executives, have eroded employee trust and commitment in many organizations. Effective leaders know they must build strong employee trust to attain high productivity and commitment. A panel of academics and other experts identified trust as one of the essential attributes of leadership for present and future. Leaders must be trustworthy, and they must also trust group members. A major strategy for being perceived as trustworthy is to make your behavior consistent with your intentions. Practice what you preach and set the example. Let others know of your intentions and invite feedback on how well you are achieving them.DAn inescapable conclusion is that effective leaders are good problem solvers and knowledgeable about the business or technology for which they are responsible. A leadership theory based on the problem-solving ability of leaders notes that intelligent and competent leaders make more effective plans, decisions, and action strategies than do leaders with less intelligence and competence. Similarly, anexplanation of leadership developed by author Dale Zand indicates that the leader’s skills of obtaining, using, and sharing useful knowledge are crucial to success in the Information Age.EThe effective use of humor is now regarded as an important part of a leader’s job. In the workplace, humor relieves tension and boredom and defuses hostility. Because humor helps a leader dissolve tension and defuse conflict, it can help him or her exert power over the group. Claudia Kennedy is a three-star Army general and the Army’s senior intelligence official, thereby occupying a key leadership position. During an interview for a magazine article, she mentioned that although she had no regrets, her demanding career had not allowed for having a husband and children. The reporter commented, “You could still get married.”Kennedy retorted, “Well certainly - put my phone number in this article.”1.Leadership is undermined without a leader being trusted.正确答案:C2.Having strong ambition and enthusiasm in their work and colleagues is an common characteristic of effective leaders.正确答案:A3.One of the important characteristics of effective leaders is that they take effort in their working goals and have a strong passion about their work.正确答案:A4.One key trait included here is that they should be good at solving problems and skilled in their own fields.正确答案:D5.Successful leaders have a strong need to control other people and resources.正确答案:B6.Being trusted is one of the minimum expectations for demanding leadership positions.正确答案:C7.Being humors is another important trait of an effective leader.正确答案:E8.Most effective leaders are alike in one essential way: they have good problem-solving ability and technical skills.正确答案:DPART TWORead this text taken from an article about Marketing Communications.Choose the best sentence to fill each of the gaps. For each gap 9—14, mark one letter(A—H)on your Answer Sheet.Do not use any letter more than once. There is an example at the beginning, (0).Many management writers have discussed the idea of satisfying customers’needs and wants.(0)______H Despite the vast amount of information available on customers, finding out exactly what they require is a challenge that certain companies, such as Sainsbury’s and Marks and Spencer, have found extraordinarily difficult to meet.(9)______. In a report written by the research company Business Intelligence, 50% of companies felt that their marketing communications were ineffective and 85% said that any attempt to gain customer loyalty failed. The two extremes of marketing can be summarized by looking at the difference between the East and the West.(10)______. Biros’, socks, Light bulbs—if it can be made and distributed then there is a market. In the prosperous West, it is the other extreme. Such is the attraction of profit that the marketing specialists are competing with some incredibly sophisticated advertising for some rather simple products!(11) ______. The Internet is also adding another dimension to the marketing process as is the growing resistance to subtle, clever advertising, which seems to have lost its edge in the marketplace.Out of this turmoil there has evolved another definition of marketing known as customer relationship marketing(CRM). Customers are much less loyal than they used to be and can afford to chop and change.(12)______Microsoft did this by reorganizing the business around the customer, splitting itself into four new divisions which focus on the customer.(13)______. The call centers are likely to form the basis of the future of marketing, although there is little evidence that they will work.(14)______A The choice is seemingly endless, with a typical superstore stocking between 20, 000 and 25, 000 different lines totaling between two and four million products per store.B In the spring of 1999, both companies announced heavy falls in profit largely due to their inability to listen to and respond to the customer.C Consumers also dislike the synthesized voice which asks you to press certain numbers on the keypad, depending on the service required.D Although there will always be a place and function for marketing, it is unclear whether the traditional product or brand manager will still have a job in the twenty-first century, having been replaced by customer relations managers on the end of a telephone.E In Russia, if there is a queue, you are advised to join as it means a manufacturer has actually produced something, regardless of whether there is a specific need.F Some companies now have customer call centers which are set up with the sole objective of handling complaint, inquiries and aftersales service.G It is estimated that winning over a new customer can cost up to five times as much as keeping a customer, so a new definition of marketing has evolved which is identifying, attracting and retaining the most valuable customers to sustain profitable growth. H Although the two are different, companies spend billions of pounds on market research with a view to targeting the potential customer in a more precise way.9.正确答案:B10.正确答案:E11.正确答案:A12.正确答案:G13.正确答案:F14.正确答案:DPART THREERead the following extract from an article about human resource, and the questions followed. For each question 15—20. mark one letter(A, B, C, or D)on your Answer Sheet for the answer you choose.Human resource is one of the key factors in determining organizational coping and profitability. Despite adverse market conditions and fluctuations, many organizations have implemented changes that seek to improve their competitiveness. The consequences of organizational change, however, can vary. Sometimes, the employees may accept the change readily; at other times, the change is met with resistance and dissatisfaction of the employees.Change and stress are closely related. Because of the feelings of uncertainty, insecurity, and threat that it invokes, organizational change can be extremely stressful for theindividual. When change occurs, employees may be stressed by role overload, role ambiguity, and role boundary.According to Selye, a little stress is actually good. When stress is at its optimal level, it can increase human resource potential as it spurs individuals to achieve their best working performances. However stress can become negative and destructive when its optimal level is exceeded. This could result in individuals experiencing high levels of anxiety or depression, low job motivation, somatic problems such as headaches, loss of appetite, trouble sleeping and ill health. In an organization that has many of its employees overly stressed or burned out, there are many detrimental consequences such as higher absenteeism, lower productivity, lower job satisfaction, and low morale. There is a variation in the manner individuals respond to organizational change. Individuals may undergo a similar change process in the organization, but the stress evoked by the change can be perceived very differently. Some individuals may see change as a threat, feeling distressed and fearful of the uncertain consequences of the change. Others may react to the change with outbursts of anger and complaints. Yet there are also those who welcome change with a positive outlook, seeing change as a challenge, an opportunity for growth and improvement. What accounts for the differences in experiencing change and perceiving stress for these individuals? Many studies suggest organizational characteristics, such as workplace climate, empowerment, and information about change, as factors that affect an individual’s adjustment to organizational change and stress. However, the research is often focusing on organization-level phenomena, as opposed to focusing on individual factors.Every person has a distinct set of personality characteristics, owns different resources, and employs different coping strategies to deal with change. This explains why coping with organizational change and stress can turn out to be very different experiences for individuals. For instance, recent micro-level research on individuals has identified dispositional traits that predict a person’s ability to cope with change. Hence, on top of looking at organizational factors, this study also examines individual factors that may help to maximize an individual’s potential to work productively and efficiently in the midst of change.15.According to the first paragraph, what is the most possible and proper statement about the reason why change and stress are closely related?A.Change can be the motivation of stress and through their mutual interaction, there will be improvement.B.Stress causes change to occur, and may bring negative effects such as the change of the job and the reduction of the salary.C.Organizational change is a primary cause of stress and when change occurs, employees often experience role stress.D.Change and stress are a pair of phenomena that will both appear in the process of employment.正确答案:C16.Why, according to Selye, is a little stress good to employees to some extent?A.As it mobilizes an individual to achieve peak performances in activities and tasks.B.As, if without stress, nothing can be achieved successfully and fully.C.As stress is an important way to prevent inaction and languor during the working process.D.As stress is the ligament between the employees and the organizations and helps the organizations to identify qualified employees.正确答案:A17.According to the third paragraph, what should the organization do about the impact of the stress?A.The organization should take some measures to prevent stress and provide more freedom for the employees.B.It is in the organization’s best interest to reduce the amount of distress coming from the organizational change, so as to enhance its human resource potential.C.The organization should disregard the impact, otherwise, the interest and efficiency could be affected.D.The organization should know what causes the stress and eliminates the origins of the stress.正确答案:B18.What does the writer imply in the fourth paragraph?A.Organizations can increase communication and disseminate adequate information about the change to employees.B.Organizations can help employees through training and educating them on how to cope with stress.C.Organizations can create a supportive environment at the workplace and it is vital that both superiors and colleagues play a part.D.That would be beneficial for the company if the employees are in a good state of psychological and emotional well-being, instead of being overly stressed or burned out.正确答案:D19.From the last paragraph, in summary, what is the element that also causes difference in the way people experience change?A.The difference in the gender, age, nationality and personality.B.Dispositional traits that predict a person’s ability to cope with change.C.It is maximizing an individual’s potential to work productively and efficiently in the midst of change.D.Difference in the way people perceive stress is also due to the uniqueness of individuals.正确答案:D20.What is the theme of this article?A.Maximizing human resource potential would mean that employees are in their top form performing for the organization.B.The organizational change can affect human resource potential.C.Organizations can increase communication and disseminate adequate information about the change to employees.D.Organizations can empower their employees to play a more active role in the implementation of change.正确答案:BPART FOURRead the article below about the employee turnover in a company—employees’three different kinds of ways of moving in their company.Choose the correct word or phrase to fill each gap from A, B, C, or D.For each question 21—30, mark one letter(A, B, C, or D)on your Answer Sheet. There is an example at the beginning, (0). 商务英语(BEC)高级阅读真题及答案

PART ONEQuestions 1 - 8· Look at the sentences below and at five passages taken from a book about famous management thinkers on the opposite page.· Which passage does each sentence refer to?· For each sentence 1 - 8, mark one letter A1 B, C, D or E on your Answer Sheet.· You will need to use some of these letters more than once.Example:He has developed his own company to promote his work.0 A B C D E1 Others in his field think very highly of him.2 His ideas have spread beyond the business world.3 He felt that people should be able to enjoy their work.4 His ideas are more complex than they seem.5 He did a variety of interesting things before writing his books.6 His most successful book was written with a colleague.7 He is particularly skilled at forecasting important developments.8 Contact with the military was an early influence on his thinking.A John AdairAdair is the pioneering British thinker in the theory of leadership. He was the first person in the UK to hold a professorship in Business Leadership and has published a series of influential books on the subject.Despite his quiet appearance, Adair has had a colourful life, serving in a Bedouin regiment and working on an Arctic fishing boat! His initial interest in leadership came from his army experience and he used to lecture at the highly prestigious academy where British army offices are trained. He now works as an international consultant.B Edward de BonoDe Bono is unusual among major gurus for two reasons: firstly, he was born not in one of the great industrial nations but on the tiny island of Malta. Secondly, his ideas have reached a wider audience than just managers, so that his books have become essential rending in many different disciplines. Most of de Bono s work has been concerned with the way human beings can train themselves to think more creatively. This apparently simple idea has resulted in37 books and a highly successful career as a lecturer and consultant.C Peter DruckerProbably no other single thinker has done as much as Drucker to establish management as a serious area of study. Certainly, his fellow management thinkers consider him one of the founding fathers of the discipline, and his books and articles are quoted more than those of any other management writer. His first book was published as far back as 1939, yet he is still writing and teaching. His greatest distinction has been his ability to predict coming trendsin business and economics. As a result, his ideas are treated with the greatest respect and interest.D Frederick HerzbergAlthough relatively few contemporary management students will have read his books, Herzberg s name is instantly recognisable to anyone who has studied industrial organisations. This is because the American psychologist was responsible for introducing the concept of motivation into management thinking. As a young man, Herzberg became deeply interested in mental illness and the human need for mental and emotional satisfaction. This led him to criticise the approach of many companies to job design, and to argue for the need for job enrichment to stimulate employees efforts.E Tom PetersThe American s reputation was created in the I 980s by the spectacular success of one book, In Search of Excellence, co-written with Robert Waterman. The two were working together as management consultants and no-one expected their first (and only) book to end up selling 5 million copies worldwide!Although his ideas have been criticised, Peters popularity as a speaker and writer has continued to grow. So much so that Peters has created his own business to market books, videos and consultancy based on his work.PART TWOQuestions 9 - 14· Read this t ext from an article about health clubs.· Choose the best sentence from the opposite page to fill in each of the gaps.· For each gap 9 - 14, mark one letter A - H on your Answer Sheet.· Do not use any letter more than once.· There is an exam ple at the beginning (0).Travel stress brings boom to health clubsA rapid growth in business travel has provided a lucrative spin-off for British health clubs as companies try to prevent hard-working executives from suffering travel-related stress.Health clubs are fully booked throughout the coming months all around the country and many are planning to expand their facilities.0 H According to Gillie Turner, group marketing manager for the Champneys group of health clubs, during the last recession executives lost many of their extra benefits as companies cut back. . 9 She says that large companies also seem to have decided that it is no good sending someone to a country like Spain as a reward for doing a good job, because they will simply eat too much and flop onto a beach. . 10Champneys, the company acknowledged as the market leader in this field, is now planning to introduce a special "Profiting from Stress" course, which will run over three days. . 11 Jonathon Stapleton, general managerof Champneys, says that modern corporate life being what it is, most business travellers find that they are having to do the work which - even a year ago - was done by two. 12To meet this new demand, other health clubs are also thinking of introducing similar schemes. Clare Brandish, the sales and marketing director of another health club, has noticed a marked change in the clientele at her club. . 13Businesses of all kinds are anxious to reduce absenteeism. . 14 Much of the problem is caused by long periods away from home, irregular hours, business entertaining and jet lag.According to the Guild of Business Travel Agents, sales of business-class airline tickets have risen by 12% in the past year, hotel bookings have gone up by 36% and car hire has risen by 24%. Dave Reynolds, the GBTA chief executive, says that the trouble is that the same number of people are being asked to travel more often. He comments that it is nowonder they need to take a break in a health club.A It has been calculated that about 40 million working days are lost each year in Britain because of stress, ten times as many as are lost 10 industrial disputes.B This has involved a considerable rise in the number of business bookings, whereas previously most clients came as private individuals.C Now they are being restored, as industry realises that the health of its executives is vital.D But who will benefit most from these developments?E Because of the pressures this imposes, many companies have now decided that it is worthwhile paying for their senior executives to take a proper break and get advice on how to combat stress.F Executives taking part in it will be given massages and health treatments, workouts and a range of talks on how to deal with stress, especially when travelling.G So what s the reason for this now trend?PART THREEQuestions 15 - 20· Read the following article on recruiting and managing staff and the questions on the opposite page.· Each question has four suggested an swers or ways of finishing the sentence, A, B, C and D.· Mark one letter A, B, C or D on your Answer Sheet, for the answer you choose. As a manager in the service industry sector, I've looked at hundredsof CVs in my time. They are not necessarily the bland documents some bosses might think they are! They are full of little pointers towards individuals personalities and suitability for the job. The first thing I always look at is an applicant s employment record. I check for continuity and stability. If somebody has a long list of previous jobs, all of varying length, alarm bells start ringing. Rather than an irregular route from job to job, what I hope to see is stable career progression. What does their career path look like - is it all steps forward, or are there a lot of sideways moves? And I am always pleased to find a family person with children, because in my experience they tend to be responsible and reliable.I never rely on CVs alone. We get applicants to fill in one of our own application forms. We ask why they've applied, what their aspirations and personal goals are, and also about their interests and hobbies and any clubs they belong to. That gives you a useful insight into their personality and lifestyle. The application form also enables us to test how much people have actually been progressing in their careers, because we ask for details of the salaries they have received for each job.It s always worth looking at CVs and designing application forms with great care. Taking on employees might be rewarding, but it is also a big investment for any business. Mistakes in choosing staff can cost companies dear, so it makes sense to spend time ensuring you get the right person. In the service sector, one of the aims of companies is to maintain and improve customer service, and this is achieved partly through low staff turnover. You need to take on people who understand that, and will want to stay. That s why, when you've taken staff on, the next thing is getting the best out of them.My management style comes from the days when I took over my first business, an ailing road haulage firm which I was certain I could turn into a profitable company. The first thing is to treat others as you d like to be treated yourself. As soon as I took over the business, I talked to everybody individually, and looked for ways to make sure their particular skills benefited the company.I didn't have much experience then of managing people, but above all I always tried to be fair and honest with everyone. As a result, I think the staff knew that and accepted my decisions, even if they didn't agree with them all. Also, bosses must be able to communicate. You also need to create team spirit, and build on the strength of the team. I explained my plans for the company to all the staff, and let them all know what I needed from them. The lorry drivers responded brilliantly, and were thekey to turning the business round. They understood that we had to develop a professional reputation, and from then on the days of poor quality deliveries were over.Lastly, I am a great believer in profit-sharing. It takes a team to make a company work, so profits should be shared by all. Job satisfaction is important, but it doesn't pay the rent. Shared profit and bonuses help to strengthen team spirit by giving everyone a common goal that they work towards together.15 What fact does the writer hope to learn from applicants CVs?A that they have experience of many different jobsB that their careers have developed steadilyC the opinion their employers had of themD whether they are married or single16 The writer says the application form is useful because itA reveals something of the applicant s character.B gives information about the applicant s family.C explains what skills the applicant has for the job.D shows how much the applicant wants to earn.17 According to the writer, why are CVs and application forms so important?A Interviewing people is an expensive process.B They indicate whether applicants really want the job.C They indicate whether applicants are efficient or not.D Employing the wrong people can be disastrous.18 One reason why the writer was successful in her first business was thatA she was used to dealing with people.B she was open with the staff.C the business was already doing well when she started.D the staff agreed with all her decisions.19 The writer believes profit-sharing is a good idea becauseA it encourages a competitive spirit.B everyone earns the same salary.C everyone shares the same aim.D it creates job satisfaction.20 Which would make the best title for this text?A Profit-sharing as motivationB How I turned a business roundC People - the key to business successD The importance of a well-presented CVPART FOURQuestions 21 - 30· Read the article below about a method of learning languages for business people.· Choose the best word from the opposite page to fill each gap.· For each question 21 - 30 mark one letter A, B, C or D on your Answer Sheet.· There is an example at the beginning (0).Language learning for the busy executiveIf you've ever been told by your boss to improve your knowledge of a foreign language you'll know that ……(0)…… doesn't come quickly. BEC商务英语(高级)阅读模拟试卷127(题后含答案及解析)题型有:1. PART ONE 2. PART TWO 3. PART THREE 4. PART FOUR 5. PART FIVE 6. PART SIXPART ONELook at the statements below and the five extracts from newspaper articles about Chinese CPI figures in five months on the opposile page. Which extract(A, B, C, D or E)does each statement(1-8)refer to? For each statement(1-8), mark one letter(A, B, C, D or E)on your Answer Sheet. You will need to use some of these letters more than once. There is an example at the beginning(0).Example:0 In the last two months, CR growth rate dropped.AThe CPI surged 8. 7 percent in February year on year, the highest rise for this key inflation figure in over a decade. The February figure was 1.6 percentage points higher than that of January. Normally, a 3-percent growth of CPI is regarded as inflation. The CPI growth rate cast a shadow over the Chinese economy and put the government in a tight spot. The government could continue to take monetary measures such as interest rate hikes, but it would be against the international trend of interest rate cuts since the global economy has been on the recession track due to the U. S. subprime mortgage crisis. Further rate hikes would draw in speculative currency, which might lead to problems such as liquidity.BThe consumer price index(CPI), the barometer for inflation, grew 7.7 percent in May year on year, 0.8 percentage points lower than that in April, according to the National Bureau of Statistics(NBS). It came as no surprise for financial institutions that the CPI dropped in May month on month, as food price, a major trigger for this round of inflation, dropped considerably thanks to an abundant summer supply. There is no quick fix yet to cure inflation. But Song Guoqing, economics professor of Peking University, stated the most efficient and simple way to control inflation is to control money supply. He called on the central bank to strictly reinforce stringent monetary policy to resolve inflation pressure.CThe consumer price index(CPI), the barometer for inflation at the retail level, grew 6. 3 percent in July year on year. The year-on-year growth rate slowed compared with the CPI’s 7.1-percent growth rate in June. But month-on-month growth accelerated 0. 1 percentage point from June to July. Inflation pressure also gained momentum after dropping in May and June. Food prices, which account for one third of the CPI basket and are considered as a major trigger of this round of inflation, rose 14.4 percent in July.D”Combating inflation” ceased to be the government’s priority as the consumer price index(CPI)growth rate continued to drop. Instead, the government has switched the focus of the country’s macro-control policies to “maintain growth”against the backdrop of the global economic downturn. In September, the CPI grew 4.6 percent year on year, but fell 0.3 percentage points compared with that of August. The CPI growth rate dropped for five consecutive months, demonstrating that government efforts to cap runaway inflation were paying off. Economists expect inflationarypressure to continue to ease in the fourth quarter.EThe consumer price index(CPI), the barometer of inflation, was down 0.3 percent in October compared with that of September. The National Bureau of Statistics(NBS)said the CPI’s year-on-year growth in October was 4 percent, the lowest growth rate in 17 months. The government has made “reining in inflation”its top economic priority since the middle of last year, when citizens were hit with soaring costs of living. Afterwards, six rounds of interest rate hikes and other measures to cool the economy paid off as economic growth slowed amid the global financial turmoil.1.CPI growth rate in this month is the lowest in seventeen months.正确答案:E2.CPI growth rate in this month puts the Chinese government in a dilemma.正确答案:A3.By this month, CPI growth rate has drooped for five months.正确答案:D4.CPI growth rate drops 0.8 percent on the basis of the previous month.正确答案:B5.Monetary policies such as continuous interest rate increase have been put into practice.正确答案:E6.Lots of countries in the world have cut interest rate because of the global economic recession.正确答案:A7.Stringent monetary policy was suggested to carry out to respond to inflation pressure.正确答案:B8.Chinese government’s priority has been changed to respond to inflation pressure.正确答案:DPART TWORead this text about an brief introduction of advertising. It is used to accomplish a number of tasks, using different media vehicles, reaching diverse audience, and gaining interest with a number of creative approaches. BEC商务英语高级阅读理解专项练习题目Questions 1-7Look at the statements below and the article about the development of future business leaders on the opposite page.Which section of the article (A, B, C or D) does each statement (1-7) refer to?For each statement (1-7), mark one letter (A, B, C or D) on your Answer Sheet. You will need to use some of these letters more than once.1 Managers need to take action to convince high-flyers of their value to the firm.2 Organisations need to look beyond the high-flyers they are currently developing.3 There is a concern that firms investing in training for high-flyers may not gain the benefits themselves.4 Managers need expert assistance from within their own firms in developing high-flyers.5 Firms currently identify high-flyers without the support ofa guidance strategy.6 Managers are frequently too busy to deal with the development of high-flyers.7 Firms who work hard on their reputation as an employer will interest high-flyers.The Stars of the FutureA Existing management research does not tell us much abouthow to find and develop high-flyers, those people who have the potential to reach the top of an organisation. As a result, organisations are left to formulate their own systems. A more effective overall policy for developing future leaders is needed, which is why the London Business School has launched the Tomorrow's Leaders Research Group (TLRG). The group contains representatives from 20 firms, and meets regularly to discuss the leadership development of the organisations' high-flyers.B TLRG recognises just how significant line managers are in the process of leadership development. Unfortunately, with today's flat organisations, where managers have functional as well as managerial responsibilities, people development all too often falls victim to heavy workloads. One manager in the research group was unconvinced by the logic of sending his best people away on development courses, 'only to see them poached by another department or, worse still, another firm'. This fear of losing high-flyers runs deep in the organisations that make up the research group.C TLRG argues that the task of management is not necessarily about employee retention, but about creating 'attraction centres'. 'We must help line managers to realise that if their companies are known as ones that develop their people, they will have a greater appeal to high-flyers,' said one advisor. Furthermore, selecting people for, say, a leadership development programme is a sign of commitment from management to an individual. Loyalty can then be more easily demanded in return.D TLRG has concluded that a company's HR specialists need to take action and engage with line managers individually about their role in the development of high-flyers. Indeed, in order to benefit fully from training high-flyers as the senior managers ofthe future, firms must actually address the development of all managers who will be supporting the high-flyers. Without this, managers will not be in a position to give appropriate advice. And when eventually the high-flyers do move on, new ones will be needed to replace them. The next challenge will be to find a new generation of high-flyers.首先得搞明白的是这篇文章到底讲的什么。

PART SIXPART ONELook at the statements below and the five extracts from an article about ‘offshoring’, the shift of service jobs to other countries, on the opposite page.Which extract (A, B, C, D or E) does each statement (1-8) refer to?For each statement (1-8), mark one letter (A, B, C, D or E) on your Answer Sheet. You will need to use some of these letters more than once. There is an example at the beginning (0).Example:0 Offshore functions will not necessarily stay abroad as financial considerations change.Off shoring AAn article in McKinsey Quarterly says that some companies which have moved their back-office functions offshore have missed huge opportunities to reap efficiencies beyond those that come from just using cheaper labour. These companies often merely replicate what they do at home, where labour is expensive and capital is relatively cheap, in countries in which the reverse is true. They forget an additional benefit is that offshoring allows companies to work round-the-clock shifts, ferrying data back and forth from one place to another, and that it also allows them to rethink the way they solve IT problems. The most successful operators redesign business processes to take full advantage of the new environment’s potential.BThere is no doubt that customers with complex queries requiring local understanding do not respond well to far-off operators repeating a series of specially learned responses. Convergys, one of the world’s biggest providers of ‘contact-centre services’, advises companies to shift simple queries offshore while retaining the more complex ones on the same shore as the caller. It calls this process ‘rightshoring’, and estimates that about 80% of the companies that it is working with in Britain are planning to split their call-centre operations in this way.CHarris Miller, president of the Information Technology Association of America, a lobby group, says that offshore locations have so far captured just 3-4% of all American companies’outsourcing. The bulk remains onshore in the hands of big firms such as Accenture and IBM. In fact, 60% of major corporates are doing nothing, or are only just beginning to investigate the potential of offshoring. Nevertheless, some big companies have told him that up to 40% of their outsourced business could end up offshore. That suggests the industry still has a long way to grow.DOne thing currently limiting the ability of companies to outsource tasks offshore is the inflexible architecture of modern business-information systems. It forces firms to perform tasks as a series of discrete steps. So a business wanting to outsource some of those steps (billing, for instance), but not others, gets involved in complicated flows of information that are prone to error. Newer software and hardware promise a future in which firms will be able to outsource smaller slivers of their business. They will not, as now, have to commit to outsourcing the whole of a department or nothing.EManyservice jobs are in industries like hotels and restaurants, or in public services like education and health, most of which can never be moved abroad. There are also alternative pools of labour to be tapped at home. Citigroup, for instance, has hired about 100 college students in America to do programming for it. In addition, some of the tasks currently going to low-cost offshore centres may eventually return because their underlying technologies will evolve in such a way that it makes economic sense to put them back in the home country.1.There is evidence that the use of offshoring will increase.正确答案:C2.Offshoring is not an option in certain sectors.正确答案:E3.The structure of businesses can make offshoring problematic.正确答案:D4.People consulting offshore staff may find the service unsatisfactory.正确答案:B5.Offshoring is still an untried and untested concept for many companies.正确答案:C6.Technology may enable companies to target aspects of their business for offshoring.正确答案:D7.The benefits of offshoring are not confined to lower costs.正确答案:A8.Strategic planning in the location of services may facilitate more successful offshoring.正确答案:BPART TWORead this text from an article about job interviews. Choose the best sentence from the opposite page to fill each of the gaps. For each gap (9-14), mark one letter (A-H) on your Answer Sheet. Do not use any letter more than once. There is an example at the beginning (0). Interviewing on screenThe problems of global recruitment are disappearing rapidly. The reason for this lies in the technology that could redefine the traditional job interview. (0).....H..... These give them access to the global recruitment market, enabling them to interview and assess their choice of candidates on screen, for example via video-conference link, CD-ROM display or electronic file transfer. The development of the use of technology as a method of recruitment has brought considerable benefits to recruitment practices. For example, it means great savings in terms of both time and the travel budget. 【P1】______.One problem with face-to-face interviews is that body language is bound to play an important part in them. 【P2】______.This necessarily leads to an inherent unfairness in such interviews. Putting distance between candidate and interviewer with the use of a video camera can help to overcome this problem as body language will be less obvious. 【P3】______.It could prove an unfair advantage, or possibly disadvantage, if used only with those unable to attend a face-to-face interview.A great deal has been made in recent years of NLP (neuro-linguistic programming), which includes the science of body language and its value in job interviews. 【P4】______. Others, however, reject the new technology simply because they are afraid of it. The benefits of technology, though, are too great to ignore, when one considers that the best person for a particular job may decide not to attend an interview if he or she has to travel a considerable distance.Appointing senior executives is increasingly seen as a global business. Companies which intend to select candidates for jobs from a wider pool will have little choice but to bear the cost of overseas travel to conventional interviews, or to embrace the new technology. 【P5】______. Inevitably, companies will be seeking more cost-effective ways of recruiting quality candidates, and for this, virtual interviewing may offer a solution. The greatest value of face-to-face interviews is at the stage of final selection. 【P6】______. Nevertheless, there are many positive aspects of using technology as a recruitment tool. Times are changing, and unless the die-hards who ignore new technology change with them, they may find themselves left behind.Example:[*]A At the same time, the economic climate suggests that there is a very real prospect of leaner budgets in future.B We are instinctively inclined to feel more positive to people who are similar to us.C However, some experts feel that the main advantage of on-screen interviewing is that it addresses flaws in the conventional interview.D For this reason there will always be a place for them.E For some posts, applicants may be able to choose between a face-to-face interview and an on-screen interview.F Some people in industry consider this to be a far more reliable approach to selection than a high-tech interview.G But for it to be completely fair, the on-screen method would have to be used with all candidates.H Employers now have at their disposal a range of communication tools.9.【P1】正确答案:C10.【P2】正确答案:B11.【P3】正确答案:G12.【P4】正确答案:F13.【P5】正确答案:A14.【P6】正确答案:DPART THREERead the following article about the problems small companies may have in recruiting staff, and the questions on the opposite page. For each question (15-20), mark one letter (A, B, C or D) on your Answer Sheet.Small companies often struggle in a crucial area - the recruitment of additional staff. With little time or budget for recruitment and training, mistakes are made all too st year, Sally Thomas, managing director of a small software company, thought she had found the ideal project co-ordinator to handle long-term client relationships, after a two-year search. ‘We had already tried a couple of internal people, but they were not suited to the role,’she says. “The role does not require a detailed knowledge of information technology, but does demand enough expertise to understand current and future projects and the ability to talk about them meaningfully and sensitively to customers.’ Ms Thomas and her technical director gave several short-listed candidates in-depth interviews and psychometric tests. They then decided to follow their instinct and pick the individual who had performed least well in the tests but felt like the right person for the job. The new project co-ordinator lasted just six weeks. ‘It was very disappointing,’ says Ms Thomas. ‘In the end the psychometric test proved to be more accurate than our own belief in who was best.’ Luckily the candidate who scored most highly in the tests was still available and is now doing well in the job.Tony Jones used personal contactswhen setting up his electronic repair services company, recruiting four people he already knew for the top management team. This worked well, but on technical staff he has been less successful, with a 50% drop-out rate in just four months. ‘It’s easy to make snap judgements because you’re so busy running the business,’ Mr Jones says. ‘Instead of a thorough testing process you tend to do it too fast. Someone seems like a nice person who knows what they’re doing, so you give them the job but eventually you come to regret your decision.’Mr Jones has tried employment agencies, but finds them expensive and lacking in knowledge of sectors such as electronics. ‘Finding electronic engineers is not like looking for bankers for example,’ he says. ‘The right people for us tend to have been stuck in the bedroom with a soldering iron in their youth, rather than having done particularly well academically. We could be talking about the dark side of the moon as far as most agencies are concerned.’Recruitment from outside is a huge problem for small companies, but according to Louise Punter, chief executive of the Surrey Chamber of Commerce, ‘People who have moved from other firms bring a fresh look and a big injection of new ideas.’Those who have worked for medium-sized or large companies are particularly valuable, because they are familiar with processes and systems that can be just as effective in a company of ten people as in a company of thousands. ‘Small companies tend to deal only with the immediate problem, whereas a larger organisation would put in place a process that would prevent the same thing going wrong again. People who know how to do this can be very valuable.’On the other hand, given the current skills shortage, low unemployment and the expense involved in recruitment, it makes sense to promote from within where possible. ‘A classic mistake is that companies overlook the skills their existing staff have: for example, a marketing person might have good financial skills,’says Mrs Punter. She recommends conducting a skills audit to identify staff expertise, in particular what is transferable or not being fully exploited. In larger companies, these issues often come out in appraisals, but in small ones they are easily missed. Not surprisingly, finding the right staff can present small companies with their biggest challenge.15.Appointing a new project co-ordinator made Sally Thomas realise thatA.she had misjudged the value of different methods of selection.B.few people had the right combination of qualities for the job.C.she had underestimated the time required to choose the best candidate.D.internal promotion was unlikely to lead to a successful appointment.正确答案:A16.In the third paragraph, what point does Tony Jones make?A.Different jobs require candidates to have different qualities.B.The demands of running a business ought to take priority over interviewing.C.The most effective method of selection is personal contact.D.A mistake in the choice of candidate can have a long-term effect.正确答案:D17.What criticism does Tony Jones make of agencies?A.They do not hold enough discussions with employers.B.They fail to focus on the appropriate skills.C.They underestimate the demand for electronic engineers.D.They do not react quickly enough to technical developments.正确答案:B18.According to Louise Punter, it is useful for small companies to recruit people whoA.understand the problems of small businesses.B.have experience of similar-sized organisations.C.can apply knowledge gained elsewhere.D.have designed systems in their previous job.正确答案:C19.In the sixth paragraph, what point does Louise Punter make about small companies?A.They are not likely to be able to afford to recruit staff with the right skills.B.They lack the necessary skills for carrying out staff appraisals.C.They may not be aware of some of the skills of their employees.D.They depend too heavily on staff developing appropriate marketing skills.正确答案:C20.Which of the following is the writer’s main point in the article as a whole?A.Finding the right people is crucial for small companies.B.Many of the selection tools used by large companies are unsuitable for small companies.C.Recruitment experts should provide a better service for small companies.D.Small companies need to reduce the cost of recruiting new staff.正确答案:APART FOURRead the article below about promotional discounts. The organisation and administration of wages and salaries are complex and varied. 9 In others, the Accounts Department is responsible for calculations of pay, while the Personnel Department is more interested innegotiations with staff about pay. If a firm wants to introduce a new wage and salary structure, it will have to decide on a method of job evaluation and ways of measuring the performance of its employees 10 . In job evaluation, all of the requirements of each job are specified in a detailed job description 11 . To pay each job what it is worth, the values are linked to the firm’s salary structure. For middle and higher management, a well-known points method is the Hay System. This evaluates personnel on their knowledge of the job, their responsibility, and their ability to solve problems. Because of the difficulty in measuring administrative work, however, job grades they are often decided without reference to an evaluation system based on points or factors. In attempting to reach a salaries policy, the Personnel Department should compare the value of each job with those in the job market. 12 13 Where it is simple to measure the work done, as in manual work, monetary incentive schemes and merit awards are often selected. For indirect workers, where measurement is difficult, methods of additional payments include bonus schemes based on the performance of the company. 14 Fringe benefits such as sickness and pension schemes, sports clubs, housing and canteens are all an accepted part of the condition of work.A. Each of these requirements is given a value, usually in “points” or “factors” which are added together to give a total value for the job.B. It is said that payment for a job should vary with any differences in the way that job is performed.C. In some companies the Personnel Department has more responsibility for wages and salaries than the Accounts Department.D. Employees in a company get more or less the same amount of payment from year to year.E. Non-financial incentive schemes are becoming more popular for all grades of staff.F. As a term, “globalisation” has been used as early as 1944 but economists began applying it around 1982. Theodore Levitt is usually credited with its coining through the article he wrote in 1983 for the Harvard Business Review entitled “Globalisation of Markets”. The more encompassing phenomenon has been perceived in the context of sociological study on a worldwide scale.BInflation risk is whether a rate of return or an investment keeps up with the rate of inflation. For example, if there is 4 percent inflation over the year, you must have 4 percent more money at the end of the year than at the beginning of the year to buy the same amount of goods and services. There is an example at theibeginning(0). Private Employers Drastically Cut Job Creation Private employers drastically cut job creation during May 2010, according to a government report released on Friday. Initially, the report appeared to show positive trends in the job market, with 431, 000 job; being added across the US—the highest figure since March 2000.(0)___B___ Within the private sector, only 41, 000 jobs were created. 【P1】______ Although the 411, 000 people hired by the Census did help to boost the economy and drive down unemployment rates, these jobs will no longer exist after the Census has been completed.【P2】______ The survey also revealed that the number of persons employed part-time for economic reasons declined by 343, 000 in May to 8. 8 million. 【P3】______And now that private employers have cut job creation so severely, it seems this trend is set to continue for some time. Statistics also reinforced the lasting effects of the recession and the long road to recovery that the US labour market is still slowly travailing. 【P4】______And there are still approximately 15 million people who want to be working but cannot find a job. 【P5】______ Construction employers, for example, added 41,000 jobs in March and April after months of decline, but then eliminated 35,000 of these jobs in May. BEC高级阅读理解专项模拟题Problems in the IT industryIn the information technology industry, it is widely acknowledged that how well IT departments of the future can fulfil their business goals will depend not on the regular updating of technology, which is essential for them to do, but on how well they can hold on to the people skilled at manipulating the newest technology. This is becoming more difficult. Best estimates of the current shortfall in IT staff in the UK are between 30,000 and 50,000, and growing. And there is no end to the problem in sight. A severe industry-wide lack of investment in training means the long-term skills base is both ageing and shrinking. Employers are chasing experienced staff in ever-decreasing circles, and, according to a recent government report, 250,000 new IT jobs will be created over the next decade. Most employers are confining themselves to dealing with the immediate problems. There is little evidence, for example, that they are stepping up their intake of raw recruits for in-house training, or retraining existing staff from other functions. This is the course of action recommended by the Computer Software Services Association, but research shows its members are adopting the short-term measure of bringing in more and more consultants on a contract basis. However, this approach is becoming less and less acceptable as the general shortage ofskills, coupled with high demand, sends contractor rates soaring. An experienced contract programmer, for example, can now earn at least double the current permanent salary. With IT professionals increasingly attracted to the financial rewards and flexibility of consultancy work, average staff turnover rates are estimated to be around 15%. While many companies in the financial services sector are managing to contain their losses by offering skilled IT staff 'golden handcuffs' - deferred loyalty bonuses that tie them in until a certain date - other organisations, like local governments, are unable to match the competitive salaries and perks on offer in the private sector and contractor market, and are suffering turnover rates of up to 60% a year. But while loyalty bonuses have grabbed the headlines, there are other means of holding on to staff. Some companies are doing additional IT pay reviews in the year and paying market premiums. But such measures can create serious employee relations problems among those excluded, both within and outside IT departments. Many industry experts advise employers to link bonuses to performance wherever possible. However, employers are realising that bonuses will only succeed if they are accompanied by other incentives such as attractive career prospects, training, and challenging work that meets the individual's long-term ambitions. This means managers need to allocate assignments more strategically and think about advancing their staff as well as their business. Some employers advocate giving key employees projects that would normally be handled by people with slightly more experience or capability. For many employers, however, the urgency of the problem demands a more immediate solution, such as recruiting skilled workers from overseas. But even this is not easy, with strict quotas on the number of work permits issued. In addition, opposition to the recruitment of IT people from other countries is growing, as many professionals believe it will lead to even less investment in training and thus a long-term weakening of the UK skills base.13 According to the first paragraph, the success of iT departments will depend onA their success at retaining their skilled staff.B the extent to which they invest in new technology.C their attempts to recruit staff with the necessary skills.D the ability of employees to keep up with the latest developments.14 A problem referred to in the second paragraph is thatA the government needs to create thousands of new IT posts.中华考试网(www.Examw。

高级商务英语BEC阅读模拟题Read the article below about the changing role of human resources departments. The best person for the jobEmployees can make a business succeed or fail, so the people who choose themhave a vital role to play.Employees are a company's new ideas, its public face and its main asset. Hiring the right people is therefore a significant factor in a company's success.(0) G If the human resources department makes mistakes with hiring, keeping and dismissing staff, a business can disappear overnight. Many companies now realise that recruiting the best recruiters is the key to success.Sarah Choi, Head of HR at Enco pic, believes that thinking commercially is a key quality in HR. Every decision an HR manager makes needs to be relevant to advancing the business.(8) ...C.....That's no longer the case. HR managers have to think more strategically these days. They continually need to think about the impact of their decisions on the bottom line. (9).....F... For example,a chief executive will expect the HR department to advise on everything from the headcount to whether to proceed with an acquisition. Why do people go into HR in the first place? Choi has a ready answer. I think most people in the profession are attracted by a long-term goal.(10)....D......Nothing happens in the company which isn't affected by or doesn't impact on its employees, so the HR department is a crucial part of any business. Not all operational managers agree. An informal survey of attitudes to HR departments that was carried out last year by a leading business journal received comments such as "What do they actually contribute?"(11).....A..... As Choi points out, salaries have never been higher and, in addition, HR managers often receive substantial annual bonuses.Despite the financial rewards, HR managers often feel undervalued, and this is a major reason for many leaving their jobs.(12)...E......However, a lack of training and development is a more significant factor. These days, good professional development opportunities are considered an essential part of an attractive package,Choi explains.A But rising levels of remuneration demonstrate that the profession's growing importance is widely recognised.B At one time, a professional qualification was required in order to progress to the top of HR.C Other departments and senior executives used to see HR managers as having a purely administrative role.D Since it's one of the few areas where you can see the whole operation, it can lead to an influential role on the board.E Being seen as someone who just ticks off other people's leave and sick days does not help build a sense of loyalty.F They therefore need to be competent in many aspects of a company's operations.G On the other hand, recruiting the wrong staff can lead to disaster.高级商务英语BEC阅读模拟题答案这篇文章的标题有些misleading,“The best people for the job”,还以为是招人的标准。

其实这篇文章是关于Human resource 的,所以还是要适当关注文章前的说明:the article below about thechanging role of human resources departments.第八题,空格后面的“That's no longer the case”是很重要的提示。

“For example,a chief executive will expect the HR department to advise on everything from the headcount to whether to proceed with an acquisition.”
