Unit 7Women: Making a difference todayPART1Understanding and Learning0verviewThis unit aims at exploring a current social issue: gender roles, a topic that could spark a lot of debates and arguments. Text A gives students a big picture of a how women have played an important role at the management level, along with their challenges and frustrations. Text B portrays a happy full-time housewife who considers her job at home absolutely important. The implication of it is that the job of a housewife should be respected. The two articles are theme-bound since both relate the topic of the role played by women, though one is at work and the other at home. The writing style of the two texts is very different as well. One is a featured article on female working styles by way of presenting various scenarios at work, blended with many direct speeches and present verb tenses such as says, report, agrees, proclaims, feels, pauses when referring to the past; the other is a narrative about the author's personal experience of being a housewife. Though the language used in both texts is somewhat casual, the tone of the first one is more serious and in a report style. Women's working style and way of thinking are clearly depicted, which will surely provoke an interesting debate on gender issues among students. The different episodes can serve as a springboard for in-depth class discussion. Activities may revolve around the main theme of the unit: Should women stay home or work outside?Section AWomen at the management levelBackground Informationwomen leadersIn today's economy, women are a strong force in the workplace. Gone are the days of men working outside and women staying at home. Women are filling the ranks in many professions and many top companies. Many of today's global business leaders and powerful entrepreneurs are women. Indeed, women are increasingly working in upper management roles, serving as leaders in a variety of settings. Interestingly, research says women behave more emotionally in certain work situations. Regardless of what the studies say, the data support the benefits of gender diversity at the workplace. So what does such diversity in the workplace mean? It means that it is beneficial to not only hire but also retain female employees. The text vividly unfolds how females are working in different business sectors at the management level.Detailed study of the text1 When Monica applied for a job as an administrative assistant in 1971, she was asked whether she would rather work for a male or a female attorney. (Para. 1)Meaning: Monica was like to work for a male when she applied for a male or a female lawyer when she applied for a managing job at a law firm in 1971.★administrative: a. relating to the work of managing a company or organization行政的;管理的Although administrative positions may pay more than teaching salaries, they often require morehours on the job.

Unit7Good morning, everyone. The theme of my speech today is Hello, homemaker. Next, I'll report on it in three sections. The first part, the traditional cognition of hmemaker. Traditionally, when it comes to the word "homemaker," people feel that the image of "homemaker" is full of complaints about household chores. Making homemade meals, cleaning dishes, raising children and so on. Every day, they have been repeating trivial things. There is no source of income, no value of their own life, so there is no respect. When they simply keep the ordinary life at home, gradually neglected or even eliminated by the society. The second part, the new Cognition of homemaker. First of all, I would like to ask Must everyone receive happiness in the same way, working long hours outside the home? I think homemaker are a loving profession, running a family is no easier than running a company, although there is no material income, but its existence for children, the value of the family is immeasurable. They just choose a different way of life, which is also a kind of realization of the value of life, and is noble. In short, homemaker should not be discriminated against and applauded with them, rather than showing pity or looking at them in a tiresome light, as proud as homemaker. All of the above is all, thank you.

passage 7 The future of Abortion自考本科英美报刊

The Future of AbortionThe court drills a crack in the foundation of Roe. By Ann McDaniel
It is a debate that divides the nation, a fundamental choice between competing rights: the government's interest in protecting human life, and a woman's right to make one of the larger decisions, of her life—when, and indeed whether, to have a child.
Months of nervous anticipation hadright-to-lifers, pro-choicers, politicians, lawyers and jurists—and perhaps most of all the 1. 5 million American women (who each year choose abortion as the best way to resolve their personal dilemmas).
Last week the Supreme Court's conservative majority spoke. In a 5-4 decision written by Chief Justice William Rehnquist, the court upheld the constitutionality of a Missouri law (that sharply restricted the availability of publicly funded abortion services and required doctors to test for the viability of a fetus at 20 weeks, or two-thirds of the way through thesecond trimester of pregnancy).established a woman's right to abortion, was still the law of the land, but it had been narrowed.

Is anybody truly honest?" As numerous accounts of cheating, lying, and fraud crowd our newspaper pages and TV news, it seems that honesty is a rapidly vanishing value. And the reports indicate that, around the globe, corruption and dishonesty are so widespread that the health and well-being of society are at risk. These reports include stories such as the students who faced criminal charges for selling in advance copies of a university final exam, a student who was expelled when he turned in a term paper with the purchase receipt for it still inside the pages, and a clerk who ran his own Christmas cards through the office postage meter and was found out when he sent one of the cards to the company treasurer! We have all read or heard accounts such as these, not to mention the stories of dishonesty amongst all layers of society as exemplified by consumers who steal and politicians who demand bribes. Travelers ripped off so many towels last year that it cost a major hotel chain $3 million to replace them. Especially troubling are the reports that dishonesty is increasing amongst student populations around the world.“有真正诚实的人吗?”

1. For another, the court clearly invited state legislatures to experiment with new laws designed to limit access to abortion — an attempt to force abortion policy out of the courts and into the political arena (Line 6-7, Para. The post-Roe era may live up to these nightmare predictions, or it may not (Line 1, Para. 3) —所预测 的这些可怕情况在罗案后时代或许会出现,或许不 会出现 (live up to: to do as what is expected )
Lesson 7
3. And in words that chilled abortion advocates everywhere, he added, “we do not see why … but prohibiting it before viability…” (Line 7-11, Para. (why the state’s …和 that there should … The result … foe of abortion (Line5-7, Para. 这 结果导致极力反对堕胎的安东尼奥· 斯卡利亚法官的 激烈批评 (muddle: a state of confusion and disorder )

Fact:Roe, a Texas resident, sought to terminate her pregnancy by abortion. Texas law prohibited abortions except to save the pregnant woman's life. Conclusion

6. In dismissing the trimester system and the concept of fetal viability, Rehnquist left a vacuum that will be very hard to fill (Line 2-3, Para.

5. The Webster case "preserves a chaos that is evident to anyone who can read and count," Scalia wrote. "We can now look forward to at least another term with carts full of mail…and streets full of demonstrators urging us… to follow the popular will…" (Line 7-10, Para. ( carts full of mail: a lot of mail expressing different opinions on the case )

Lesson 7
Number of abortions in United States: According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), there were 854,122 legal induced abortions in the US in 2003.There are lots of reasons for pregnant women to choose an abortion, for example, some want to postpone childbearing , others have relationship problems or the partner does not want pregnancy, ect. Various reasons contributing to their having a late abortion are reported, that is , some didn’t recognize they were pregnant or misjudged gestation, some found it hard to make arrangements for abortion, others were afraid to tell their partners or parents, etc.
The judicial branch of the federal government is headed by the U.S. Supreme Court, which interprets the meaning of the Constitution and of federal laws.

2. Roe vs. Wade Case
In 1973 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Roe Vs. Wade that unduly过度地 restrictive state regulation of abortion was unconstitutional, in effect legalizing abortion on demand for women in the first three months of pregnancy. A countermovement for the restoration of strict control over the circumstances under which abortions might be permitted soon sprang up, and the issue became entangled in social and political conflict.
