One evening last autumn, while Marcos Ugarte, 15, did his homework and his father, Eduardo, 47, prepared lesson plans, they heard screaming outside. It was from one of their neighbors, the Ma family. Then Marcos’s eye was caught by a glow(火光) from there.

“T he house’s on fire!‖ Marcos cried. Wearing only in shorts, the barefoot(光脚的) teen ran out with his dad. When they got there, Grandmother Yim Ma, mother Suzanne Ma, and son Nathan Ma were crying for help. Through the open front door, father Alex Ma was staggering (磕磕绊绊) down the stairs, coughing heavily.

“Anyone else in it?‖ Eduardo asked.

“My son!‖ Alex point ed to the second floor.

Eduardo started up the stairs, but smoke and heat forced him to his knees. He crawled(爬) upstairs and down the hall where Alex said he would find Cody, 8, who had locked himself in a bedroom. Eduardo tried hard to open the door. But Cody made no reply, and Eduardo had to make his way back downstairs. Marcos then placed the ladder near the window and climbed up. When Marcos reached the window, he pushed the screen into the room and managed to coax(哄) Cody out. Holding Cody with one arm, Marcos slowly climbed down the ladder. Cody was quickly sent to a nearby hospital, where he’s treated for smoke inhalation(吸入).

Well, it’s time for WORDS AND THEIR STORIES. Today we have some expressions offered by Francisco Carlos, a listener in Brazil.

The first is “face the music‖. One story says the expression began in the theater. New actors, shaking with fear, were told that their only way out was to go out and face the music. The music was played by the musicians seated in front of the stage.

A similar expression is face up to. It means to accept something difficult or painful. For example, a man must face up to the fact that he lied about a business deal and will lose his job.

A child was told off by his mother at home because of his bad grades in study, but he put a good face on it before his friends.

Meeting someone face-to-face can be exciting, especially if the other person is famous. It is an expression one might use after visiting the White House and meeting the president face-to-face. Or a teacher might ask for a face-to-face meeting with the parents of a student in trouble.

Almost 500 years ago, William Shakespeare also used some words about music in his play Two Gentlemen of Verona. Valentine secretly loves Lady Sylvia. His servant jokes that Valentine’s love for her is as hard to see as the nose on a man’s face, thus creating another expression: as plain as the nose on your face. Of c ourse, a man’s nose can’t be hidden.

Do you remember the name of your first teacher? I do, mine. Her name was Mrs. White. She must be some older relative of Snow White, because she had the same bright blue eyes, short dark hair, red lips and fair skin.

We used to write a lot and I would bring back what I wrote and my mother would look at it and see there were so many mistakes. But no red corrections. And always a star. Sometimes even a Good! It worried her much, so one day she went in to meet Mrs. White and asked why she never corrected or pointed out my mistakes.

And my mother says Mrs. White said – The children are just beginning to get excited about using words, about mak ing sentences. I don’t want to hurt them with red ink. Spelling and grammar can wait. The wonder of words won’t...

I used to misspell beautiful a lot. Never could I remember that the e went before the a. It troubled my teacher in high school a lot. And thanks to Mrs. White I had no guilt(惭愧) about writing what I meant even if I couldn’t quite spell it out.

I think that if Mrs. White had used her red pen more often I probably wouldn’t be telling you about this now. I look back now and think she must have been an excellent teacher—a great example for us to follow: To allow the joy, wonder and excitement of expression to flower like that.

Too much homework is a primary reason keeping students from reading after school, a recent survey(调查) showed.

More than 1,400 local students in the fourth to the seventh grade were surveyed about what they like to read after class and how much time they spend reading. About 52% of them did more reading for about 30 minutes and about 12 percent read less than 15 minutes.

Lu Min, a leading researcher, said students didn’t take much time for reading because they had to finish homework or attend after-school classes.

―The y don’t take up a good reading habit. So, during their spare time, they’ll watch television, play online games or talk online with classmates,‖ Lu said.

Only 35 percent of them read for at least an hour after school, and half of the total students said they like digital reading better.

The report said half of the students go to school libraries once a week while 7.7 percent of them never go. The most popular books for kids are literature, followed by science fiction(科幻) and funny books. Nearly 56 percent of the students used digital terminals(数字终端) such as smartphones and computers to read, and 42.4 percent often read on computers.

―Digital reading, though easy and fast, has weaknesses compared with traditional reading forms such as books or newspapers,‖ Lu said, ―Smartphones and iPads can easily carry away students’ attention to play other entertainment.‖

13. According to the survey, students spend little time reading after school because _____.

A. they have many activities to attend

B. they are not asked by teachers

C. they have much homework to do

D. they don’t have a healthy life

14. How does Lu Min feel about digital reading?

A. Bored.

B. Pleased.

C. Uncertain.

D. Worried.

15. The passage is mainly written to ______.

A. introduce

B. compare

C. explain

D. warn

Every year, rich party animals in the US take planes to places like Florida, Hawaii or California. 17

―How are you?‖ It’s a question that seems simple, but 41 can really make people feel very strange.

Last month, Alina Simone wrote in the New York Times about the 42 (difficult) that Russians have with this question. The same question, 43 Russian language and culture, is always answered in a negative(负面的) way. In Russia, when asked ―How are you?‖, people usually complain(抱怨) about health, weather or things that 44 (happen) recently. So when they’re asked, they don’t know what to do.

In English-speaking countries, ―How are you?‖ has one standard answer: ―Fine, and you?‖ That’s bec ause it is 45 about getting information – but a greeting. 46 an English-speaking friend really wants to know what’s going on in your life, he/she is more likely to ask: ―what have you been up to?‖ or ―what’s new?‖

But I understand why people are so 47 (surprise) about it. When we learn second languages, we have to learn rules for using words as much as words themselves. 48 can you learn those rules? 49 (watch) English-language TV shows is a good place to start. If you

2015年高考全国卷2英语试题解析 第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) A My color television has given me nothing but a headache. I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of clothes that wouldn’t fit. I let a salescler k fool me into buying a discontinued model. I realized this a day later, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less than I had paid. The set worked so beautiful when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations signed off for the night. Fortunately, I didn’t get any channels showing all-night movies or I would never have gotten to bed. Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static(静电) noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial, a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it, I had to change to another channel and then change it back. Sometimes this technique would not work, and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm
