Identify theparagraph from which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraphmore than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter. Answer the questions bymarking the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2.9 Highly Effective Study Habits(A) Students grapple with many issues in their lives, and because of all of the competing things for your attention, it’s hard to concentrate on studying. And yet if you’re in school, you have to do at least a little studying in order to progress from year to year. The key to effective studying isn’t cramming or studying longer, but studying smarter. You can begin studying smarter with these nine proven and effective study habits.1. How you approach studying matters(B) Too many people look at studying as a necessary task, not an enjoyment or opportunity to learn. That’s fine, but researchers have found that how you approach something matters almost as much as what you do. Being in the right mindset is important in order to study smarter.(C) Sometimes you can’t “force” yourself to be in the right mindset, and it is during such times you should simply avoid studying. If you’re distracted by a relationship issue, an upcoming game, or finishing an important project, then studying is just going to be an exercise in frustration. Come back to it when you’re not focused (or obsessed!) by something else going on in your life.2. Where you study is important(D) A lot of people make the mistake of studying in a place that really isn’t conducive to concentrating. A place with a lot of distractions makes for a poor study area. If you try and study in your dorm room, for instance, you may find the computer, TV, or a roommate more interesting than the reading material you’re trying to digest.(E) The library, a corner in a student lounge or study hall are good places to check out. Make sure to choose the quiet areas in these places, not the loud, central gathering areas. Investigate multiple places on-campus and off-campus, don’t just pick the first one your find as “good enough” for your needs and habits. Finding an ideal study place is important, because it’s one you can reliably count on for the next few years.3. Bring everything you need, nothing you don’t(F) Unfortunately, when you find an ideal place to study, sometimes people bring things they don’t need. For instance, while it may seem ideal to type notes into a computer to refer back to later, computers are a powerful distraction for many people because they can do so manydifferent things. Playing games, going online, surfing the Web, and answering emails are all wonderful distractions that have nothing to do with studying. So ask yourself whether you really need a computer to take notes, or whether you can make do with the old-fashioned paper and pen or pencil.(G) Don’t forget the things you need to study for the class, exam or paper you’re focusing on for the study session. Nothing is more time-consuming and wasteful than having to run back and forth regularly because you forget an important book, paper, or some other resource you need to be successful.4. Outline and rewrite your notes(H) Most people find that keeping to a standard outline format helps them boil information down to its most basic components. People find that connecting similar concepts together makes it easier to remember when the exam comes around. The important thing to remember in writing outlines is that an outline only words as a learning tool when it is in your own words and structure. Every person is unique in how they put similar information together (called “chunking” by cognitive psychologists). So while you’re welcomed to copy other people’s notes or outlines, make sure you translate those notes and outlines into your own words and concepts. Failing to do this is what often causes many students to stumble in remembering important items.5. Practice by yourself or with friends(I) The old saying, practice makes perfect, is true. You can practice by yourself by testing yourself with either practice exams, past quizzes, or flash cards (depending what kind of course it is and what’s available). If a practice exam isn’t available, you can make one up for yourself and your classmates (or find someone who will). If a practice or old exam from a course is available, use it as a guide – do not study to the practice or old exam! (Too many students treat such exams as the real exams, only to be disappointed when the real exam has none of the same questions). Such exams help you understand the breadth of content and types of questions to expect, not the actual material to study for.6. Make a schedule you can stick to(J) Too many people treat studying as the thing to do when you get around to it or have some spare time. But if you schedule study time just as your class time is scheduled, you’ll find it becomes much less of a hassle in the long run. Instead of last-minute cramming sessions, you’ll be better prepared because you haven’t put off all the studying into one 12-hour marathon. Spending 30 or 60 minutes every day you have a class studying for that class before or after is a lot easier and will allow you to actually learn more of the material.7. Take breaks (and rewards!)(K) Because so many people view studying as a chore or task, it’s human nature to avoid it. If, however, you find rewards to help reinforce what you’re doing, you may be pleasantly surprised by the change you may find in your attitude over time. Rewards start by chunking study time into manageable components. Studying for 4 hours at a time with no breaks is not realistic or fun for most people. Studying for 1 hour, and then taking a 5-minute break and grabbing a snack is usually more sustainable and enjoyable. Divide study time into segments that make sense and work for you. If you have to digest a whole textbook chapter, find sections in the chapter and commit to reading and taking notes on one section at a time. Maybe you only do one section in a sitting, maybe you do two. Find the limits that seem to work for you.8. Keep healthy and balanced(L) It’s hard to live a balanced life while in school, I know. But the more balance you seek out in your life, the easier every component in your life becomes. If you spend all of your time focusing on a relationship or a game, you can see how easy it is to be out of balance. When you’re out of balance, the things you’re not focusing on – such as studying – become that much harder. Don’t spend all of your time studying – have friends, keep in touch with your family, and find interests outside of school that you can pursue and enjoy.9. Know what the expectations are for the class(M) Different professors and teachers have different expectations from their students. While taking good notes and listening in class (and attending as many of the classes as you can) aregood starts, you can do one better by spending some time with the instructor or professor’s assistant. Talking to the instructor early on – especially if you foresee a difficult course ahead – will help you understand the course requirements and the professor’s expectations. If you get a particularly bad grade on a paper or exam, talk to the instructor. Try and understand where things went wrong, and what you can do in the future to help reduce it from happening again.Don’t forget to learn!(N) Studying isn’t just about passing an exam, as most students look at it as. Studying is an effort to actually learn things, some of which you might actually care about. So while you’ll have to take your share of classes that have little or nothing to do with your interests, you should still look for interesting things to take away from every experience.35. ____There are always interesting things to be found in what you learn.36.____You should space your work out over shorter periods of time and not try not try to cramall of your studying into just one or two sessions.37.____Past test papers are only useful in that they give you a general idea of the subject areasto focus on and help you identify the style of the questions.38.____It is important to know what the professors will be expecting of you when you sign upfor their courses.39.____Studying can be a problem when you aren't in the mood for it.40.____Only bring the necessary study tools with you when you go to your ideal study place.41.____Notes are only useful and helpful when they are written using your own words andconcepts.42.____Finding a positive study environment is very important.43.____In order to study efficiently, you have to have the right attitude.44.____Information reviewed amid distractions is less likely to be remembered.Section B Blank Filling (10%)Directions: In this section, there is a passage with ten blanks. It was cut long, so that it would let in as much light aspossible, and narrow, to keep out the bad weather. However, the slit let inmore wind than light. This is why it was called “the wind’s eye”. The wordwindow itself comes from two Old Norse words for wind and eye. Before windows were used, the ancienthalls and castles of northern Europe and Britain were dark and smoky. Theirgreat rooms were high, with only a hole in the roof to let out the smoke fromtorches and cooking fires. As time went on, people wanted morelight and air in their homes. He'sthe NBA's No. 1 player who can run fast, jump high and shoot well. All thesethings are true, but there are other truths about Michael that are not soeasily seen: his understanding of teamwork, his competitive spirit and his lovefor the game. It is these truths that form the deepest connection betweenMichael and me.After coaching him for eightseasons, I still wonder at Michael's love for the game that moves us, even inpractice games. I mean, he never takes a day off. One thing about Michael isthat he takes nothing about his game for granted. When he first came to the NBAback in 1984, his outside shooting was not perfect, and he began to practiceshooting hundreds of shots each day. In the end, he became a real three-pointshooter. Playing outstanding defense didn't come straight to him, either. Hehad to study his opponents, learn their usual moves and then try hard to learnthe skills necessary to stop them. He worked extremely hard to perfect hisfootwork and his balance.Today, so many young people cometo the game with the thought that talent is all they need for success. Michaelthinks the other way. He knows his weaknesses, and for me, one of the signs ofMichael's greatness is that he has turned his weaknesses into strengths.Another of the qualities Irespect most about Michael is his performance on the court. Whilst he is verycompetitive, he always respects the other players, whether they are on his teamor on the other side. Often, he gives a hand to an opponent who falls down. Heis definitely not the type of player who would try to build himself up bytearing someone else down. This is an act of leadership. Through hisoutstanding performance on the court, he has won love and respect from both histeammates and opponents.Every season, Michael makeshimself available to groups of children with serious diseases. He puts them atease, lets them have a laugh, and makes it possible for them to enjoybasketball. When Michael retires, I only hope that young players like GrantHill and Kobe Bryantwill be influenced by his performance and by his sense offair play. I hope that people will remember him for much more than just hischampionship rings. Being Michael's coach has been a great joy. But moreimportantly, I consider Michael to be a friend.(1) [单选题]The text is written by ______.• A、a basketball player• B、a basketball coach• C、a basketball fan• D、a sports news reporter正确答案:B(2) [单选题]What is true about Michael Jordan?• A、He can't jump high.• B、He can't run fast.• C、He can shoot well.• D、He can take a day off.正确答案:C(3) [单选题]What does "Playing outstandingdefense didn't come straight to him" in Sentence 6, Paragraph 2 mean?• A、He was not outstanding at playingdefense at the very beginning.• B、He was outstanding at playing defensefrom the very beginning.• C、Playing outstanding defense wasimportant to him.• D、Playing outstanding defense was notimportant to him.正确答案:A(4) [单选题]Michael Jordan was all the following,except______.• A、respecting other players on thecourt• B、giving a hand to an opponent who fallsdown• C、having competitive spirit• D、building himself up by tearing othersdown正确答案:D(5) [单选题]Which of the following is NOT true?• A、The coach regarded Michael Jordan as afriend.• B、Many children with serious diseases canget a chance to meet Michael Jordan.• C、Michael Jordan has influenced many otherbasketball players through his love for the game.• D、Michael Jordan doesn't think talent iseverything a person needs for success in playing basketball.正确答案:D3College is a newand different experience for me. I'm away from home, so I have many things toadjust to, e.g. being on my own, talking with friendly people. These are someof the things I like about college.First of all, living at college gives me a sense of responsibility, ofbeing on my own. My parents aren't around to say, "No, you're not goingout tonight." or "Did you finish your homework?" Everything I dohas to be my decision, and that makes me responsible for my own life. Duringthe second week I was at college, I had to go out and look for a bank where Icould open an account. And when I got to the bank, I had to decide whether tohave a current or savings account and whether or not to get acredit card.Decisions! Decisions!Friendly people, that's another thing I like about college. On my firstday I came to Marymount University here in Virginia from New York, I was a bitconfused about where I was going. My mother and I drove in. We did not know thebuilding we were supposed to go to, but the guard was very nice. With a smile,he told us what building we were looking for and where we could park our car.My room was on the first floor of New Gerard, and I knew I had to go throughsome glass doors, but my mother and I didn't know which ones. Some students sawme and asked, "Are you a new student?" When they found out I waslooking for New Gerard, one said: "Oh, just follow us; that's where we'regoing." Even now I feel comfortable in the dorm because there are friendlypeople around to talk with.I do like a lot of things about college, but that doesn't mean I don'tthink about things at home. Although I like college, I can still get homesick:New York is a very good place, too!(1) [单选题]The text isperhaps written by ________.• A、a new student• B、a new teacher• C、a foreignreporter• D、a foreignvisitor正确答案:A(2) [单选题]What does"gives me a sense of responsibility" in the first sentence ofParagraph 2 mean? Not only does he want to say it well, but hewants it to be something which has not been said before. He hopes the publicwill listen and understand--he wants to teach them, and he wants them to learnfrom him. What visual artists like painters want to teach is easy to make outbut difficult to explain, because painters translate their experiences intoshapes and colors, not words. They seem to feel that a certain selection ofshapes and colors, out of the countless billions possible, is exceptionallyinteresting for them and worth showing to us. Without their work we shouldnever have noticed these particular shapes and colors, or have felt the delightwhich they brought to the artist. Mostartists take their shapes and colorsfrom the world of nature and from human bodies in motion and repose; theirchoices indicate that these aspects of the world are worth looking at, thatthey contain beautiful sights. Contemporary artists might say that they merelychoose subjects that provide an interesting pattern, that there is nothing morein it. Yet even they do not choose entirely without reference to the characterof their subjects. If one painter chooses to paint a gangrenous (生坏疽的) leg and another a lake in moonlight, each of them isdirecting our attention to a certain aspect of the world. Each painter istelling us something, showing us something, emphasizing something--all of whichmean that, consciously or unconsciously, he is trying to teach us.(1) [单选题]All artists are common in that________.• A、they use shapes and colors insteadof words• B、they are trying to teach the public• C、what they want to teach isdifficult to explain• D、they want to learn from the public正确答案:B(2) [单选题]A painter chooses certain shapesand colors out of the countless billions possible because he believesthey ________.• A、are beautiful• B、can bring delight to him• C、re worth showing to the public• D、are particular正确答案:C(3) [单选题]Contemporary artists choose subjects________.• A、without reference to the characterof their subjects• B、that only provide an interestingpattern• C、that there is no meaning in it• D、partly for the meaning of the subjects正确答案:D(4) [单选题]Comparing the painter who paints agangrenous leg with the one who paints a lake in moonlight, we can draw theconclusion that ________.• A、both convey the same meaning• B、both show certain aspects of the world• C、the latter is more meaningful• D、the former is more meaningful正确答案:B(5) [单选题]According to the passage, which ofthe following statements is true?• A、The public could share the artist'sfeelings through their choice of shapes and colors.• B、The painter should not choose topaint ugly things.• C、Contemporary artists are completelydifferent from other artists.• D、All artists are teaching the publicconsciously.正确答案:A。

office.“You sold me a ticket for May22nd,but therewas no ship from Jersey that night. So my daughter and I had to stay in a hotel. It cost me£12.”Harry was worried. He remembered selling the woman a return ticket.“Come into the office,Madam,”he said politely.“I’ll just check the Jersey timetable for May 22nd.”The woman and her little girl followed him inside. She was quite right,as Harry soon discovered:there was no sailing on May22nd.How could he have made such a careless mistake? He shouldn’t have sold her a ticket for that day.Wondering what to do,he smiled at the child.“You look sun-burnt,”he said to her.“Did you have a nice holiday in Jersey?”“Yes,”she answered, shyly.“The beach was lovely. And I can swim too!”“That’s fine,”said Harry.“My little girl can’t swim a bit yet.Of course, she’s only three…”“I’m four,”the child said proudly.“I’ll be four and a half.”Harry turned to the mother.“I remember your ticket,Madam,”he said.“But you didn’t get one for your daughter, did you?”“Er,well—”the woman looked at the child.“I mean...she hasn’t started school yet. She’s only four.”“A four-year-old child must have a ticket,Madam.A child’s return ticket to Jersey costs…let me see…£13.50.So if the railway pays your hotel, you will owe£1.50. He has argued that tapping ANWR’s oil would help ease California’s electricity crisis and provide a major boost to the country’s energy independence. But no one knows for sure how much crude oil lies buried beneath the frozen earth with the last government survey, conducted in1998,projecting output anywhere from3billion to16billion barrels. The oil industry goes with the high end of the range, which could equal as much as10%of U.S.consumption for as long as six years.By pumping more than1million barrels a day from the reserve for the next two three decades, lobbyists claim, the nation could cut back on imports equivalent to all shipments to the U.S.from Saudi Arabia.Sounds good.An oil boom would also mean a multibillion-dollar windfall(意外之财)in tax revenues, royalties(开采权使用费)and leasing fees for Alaska and the Federal Government.Best of all, advocates of drilling say, damage to the environment would be insignificant.“We’ve never had a document case of oil rig chasing deer out onto the pack ice.”says Alaska State Representative Scott Ogan. Not so far,say environmentalists.Sticking to the low end of government estimates, the National Resources Defense Council says there may be no more than3.2billion barrels of economically recoverable oil in the coastal plain of ANWR,a drop in the bucket that would do virtually nothing to ease America’s energy problems. And consumers would wait up to a decade to gain any benefits, because drilling could begin only after much bargaining over leases, environmental permits and regulatory review. As for ANWR’s impact on the California power crisis, environmentalists point out that oil is responsible for only1%of the Golden State’s electricity output—and just3%of the nation’s.36.What does President Bush think of tapping oil in ANWR?A)It will exhaust the nation’s oil reserves.B)It will help secure the future of ANWR.C)It will help reduce the nation’s oil imports.D)It will increase America’s energy consumption.37.We learn from the second paragraph that the American oil industry________.A)believes that drilling for oil in ANWR will produce high yieldsB)tends to exaggerate America’s reliance on foreign oilC)shows little interest in tapping oil in ANWRD)expects to stop oil imports from Saudi Arabia38.Those against oil drilling in ANWR argue that________.A)it can cause serious damage to the environmentB)it can do little to solve U.S.energy problemsC)it will drain the oil reserves in the Alaskan regionD)it will not have much commercial value39.What do the environmentalists mean by saying“Not so fast”(Line1,Para.3)?A)Oil exploitation takes a long timeB)The oil drilling should be delayedC)Don’t be too optimisticD)Don’t expect fast returns40.It can be learned from the passage that oil exploitation beneath ANWR’s frozen earth________.A)remains a controversial issueB)is expected to get under way soonC)involves a lot of technological problemsD)will enable the U.S.to be oil independentPassage ThreeQuestions41to45are based on the following passage:Ideas about polite behavior are different from one culture to another. Some societies, such as America and Australia, for example, are mobile and very open. People here change jobs and move house quite often. As a result, they have a lot of relationships that often last only a short time, and they need to get to know people quickly. So it’s normal to have friendly conversations with people that they have just met,and you can talk about things that other cultures would regard as personal. On the other hand there are more crowded and less mobile societies where long–term relationships are more important.A Malaysian or Mexican business person, for example, will want to get to know you very well before he or she feels happy to start business. But when you do get to know each other, the relationship becomes much deeper than it would in a mobile society. To Americans, both Europeans and Asians seem cool and formal at first. On the other hand,as a passenger from a less mobile society puts it,it’s no fun spending several hours next to a stranger who wants to tell you all about his or her life and asks you all sorts of questions that you don’t want to answer.Cross-cultural differences aren’t just a problem for travelers, but also for the flights that carry them. All flights want to provide the best service, but ideas about good service are different from place to place. This can be seen most clearly in the way that problems are dealt with. Some societies have‘universalist’cultures. These societies strongly respect rules, and they treat every person and situation in basically the same way.‘Particularist’societies,on the other hand, also have rules, but they are less important than the society’s unwritten ideas about what is right or wrong for a particular situation or a particular person. So the normal rules are changed to fit the needs of the situation or the importance of the person. This difference can cause problems.A traveler from a particularist society,India, is checking in for a flight in Germany,a country which has a universalist culture. The Indian traveler has two much luggage, but he explains that he has been away from home for a long time and the suitcases are full of presents for his family. He expects that the check–in official will understand his problem and will change the rules for him.The check–in official explains that if he was allowed to have too much luggage, it wouldn’t be fair to the other passengers. But the traveler thinks this is unfair, because the other passengers don’t have his problem.41.Often moving from one place to another makes people like Americans and Australians.A.like traveling betterB.easy to communicate withC.difficult to make real friendsD.have a long–term relationship with their neighbors42.People like Malaysians prefer to associate with those.A.who will tell them everything of their ownB.who want to do business with themC.they know quite wellD.who are good at talking43.A person from a less mobile society will feel it when a stranger keeps talking to him or her,and asking him or her questions.A.boring B.friendly C.normal D.rough44.Which of the following is true about“particularist societies”?A.There is no rule for people to obey.B.People obey the society’s rules completely.C.No one obeys the society’s rules though they have.D.The society’s rules can be changed with different persons or situations. 45.The writer of the passage thinks that the Indian and the German have different ideas about rules because of different_____________.A.interests B.habits and customsC.cultures D.ways of lifePassage FourQuestions46to50are based on the following passage:People and the sources of air pollution are found in the same places. This means that cities with large populations have the biggest problem of dirty air.Air pollution is caused by many different things.A major source of air pollution is the gas fumes from cars.Statistics show that93percent of all auto trips are within cities.Another major source of dirty air is the burning of coal and oil for energy. This energy is needed to make electricity.Of course, much more electricity is used in the city than in the country. On the average,we throw away more trash and garbage than the year before. The burning of garbage contributes to air pollution. Many major industries are also responsible for the dirty air in the around cities. The fumes from iron, steel, chemical, and petroleum production add particles to the air.The effects of air pollution range from mild headaches to death. The levels ofpollution found in heavy for traffic may cause headaches for loss of clear vision. Wherever coal and oil are used for fuel, fumes may kill trees and plants and cause metal to corrode. In some of the larger cities, these fumes endanger the live of human beings by contributing to lung diseases and causing early death.46.The key point of the passage is that_________.A.the cause of air pollution is peopleB.the causes and the effects of air pollution are both found in citiesC.the effects of air pollution range from headaches to deathD.air pollution is caused by dirty air47.What is the purpose of this passage?A.to persuade people to stop polluting the airB.to tell the causes of air pollutionC.to tell why cities are bad places to liveD.to describe why cities are bad places to live48.Why is air pollution more grave in the city than in the country?A.Because there larger populations in cities.B.Because the air in the city is dirty.C.Because there are more cars in the city.D.Because there are much more gas fumes from cars and burning of coal and oilfor energy in the city than in the country.49.The fumes from coal and oil may cause metal______.A.to turn blackB.to become rustyC.to corrodeD.to twist50.In larger cities, the fumes from coal and oil may contribute to___________.A.heart diseaseB.lung diseasesC.loss of clear visionD.serious headachePart VI.Translation(2*5)Directions:In this part there are10incomplete sentences with Chinese in brackets. Reading Comprehension(30 points)There are five reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by four Directions: D. marked A,B,C,and four questions. For each question there are suggested answersChoose the best answer and blacken the corresponding letter. Passage OneIn the United States, teaching is very important. If teachers do not teach well, students complain. If many students do not understand, people think that the teacher does not do a good job. The teacher has big responsibility to make sure students understand. In a sense, students are consumers and the teacher is offering services. Students have the right to evaluate their teachers, and they usually do so at the endof each course. That evaluation includes lots of aspects of teaching, such as explanation, preparation, using good examples, answering questions, and organization of classes. Students are supposed to read required textbooks and recommended books before classes. Without reading them, they will find it very difficult to understand the class. Basic courses on doing research and writing papers are taught at the beginning of theprogram. They teach things very concretely(具体地) and clearly. Students areexpectedto apply what they have learned to their studies.Classes are usually divided into lectures and seminars. There are some lecture classes, where the teacher just gives a lecture, and students ask questions at the end. Most graduate level classes are lectures and discussions. Participating in discussionsisvery important. Higher level classes involve very little lecturing. They emphasize discussion and presentation by the students.1.( )According to the passage, good teachers should ___________.A.try to please their students B.treat their students as consumers7卷大学英语试题B make sure their students understand understand their students well D..C)What are students expected to do before attending a class?2.(Understand the textbooks well. Travel information can be seen everywhere on the Internet and there are so many vacation packages waiting for you tochoose. All this can make travel planning confusing and time consuming. To make a choice, tourists and business people often turn to travel agents, who provide them withthe best possible travel arrangements. In general, travel agents give advice on places you should go to, and make arrangements for transportation, hotel accommodations, car rental, sightseeing, and entertainment. They may also tell you about weather conditions, restaurants, and touristsattractions. For international travel, agents also make sure that you have the necessary papers such as passports and visas, and tell you how to go through the customs. They sometimes provide information on money exchange rates.Travel agents will search all kinds of sources for information on departure and arrival times, fares, hotel ratings and accommodations. They may visit hotels and7卷大学英语试题B restaurants to know more. the best choice and write down the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet .Passage OneQuestions 21to 25are based on the following passage:Unless we spend money to spot and prevent asteroids (小行星)now, one might crash into Earth and destroy life as we know it,say some scientists.Asteroids are bigger versions of the meteoroids (流星)that race across the night sky. Most orbit the sun far from Earth and don’t threaten us.But there are also thousands of asteroids whose orbits put them on a collision course with Earth.Buy $50million worth of new telescopes right now. Then spend $10million a year for the next 25years to locate most of the space rocks.By the time we spot a fatal one,the scientists say,we’ll have a way to change its course. Some scientists favor pushing asteroids off course with nuclear weapons. But the cost wouldn’t be cheap. Is it worth it?Two things experts consider when judging any risk are:1)How likely the event is;and 2)How bad the consequences if the event occurs.Experts think an asteroid big enough to destroy lots of life might strike Earth once every 500,000years.Sounds pretty rare-but if one did fall,it would be the end of the world.“If we don’t take care of these big asteroids, they’ll take care of us,”says one scientist.“It’s that simple.”The cure, though, might be worse than the disease.Do we really want fleets of nuclear weapons sitting around on Earth?“The world has less to fear from doomsday (毁灭性的)rocks than from a great nuclear fleet set against them,”said a New York Times article.21.What does the passage say about asteroids and meteoroids?A)They are heavenly bodies different in composition.B)They are heavenly bodies similar in nature.C)There are more asteroids than meteoroids.D)Asteroids are more mysterious than meteoroids.22.What do scientists say about the collision of an asteroid with Earth?A)It is very unlikely but the danger exists.B)Such a collision might occur once every 25years.C)Collisions of smaller asteroids with Earth occur more often than expected.D)It’s still too early to say whether such a collision might occur.23.What do people think of the suggestion of using nuclear weapons to alter the courses of asteroids?A)It sounds practical but it may not solve the problem.B)It may create more problems than it might solve.C)It is a waste of money because a collision of asteroids with Earth is very unlikely.D)Further research should be done before it is proved applicable.45624.We can conclude from the passage that ______________.A)while pushing asteroids off course nuclear weapons would destroy the worldB)asteroids racing across the night sky are likely to hit Earth in the near futureC)the worry about asteroids can be left to future generations since it is unlikely to happen in our lifetimeD)workable solutions still have to be found to prevent a collision of asteroids with Earth25.Which of the following best describes the author’s tone in this passage?A)Optimistic.B)Critical.C)Objective.D)Arbitrary.Passage TwoQuestions 26to 30are based on the following passage:Believe it or not, optical illusion (错觉)can cut highway crashes.Japan is a case in point. It has reduced automobile crashes on some roads by nearly 75percent using a simple optical illusion.Bent stripes, called chevrons (人字形),painted on the roads make drivers think that they are driving faster than they really are,and thus drivers slow down. Now the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety in Washington D.C.is planning to repeat Japan’s success.Starting next year, the foundation will paint chevrons and other patterns of stripes on selected roads around the country to test how well the patterns reduce highway crashes.Excessive speed plays a major role in as much as one fifth of all fatal traffic accidents, according to the foundation. To help reduce those accidents, the foundation will conduct its tests in areas where speed-related hazards are the greatest-curves,exit slopes, traffic circles, and bridges. Some studies suggest that straight, horizontal bars painted across roads can initially cut the average speed of drivers in half. However, traffic often returns to full speed within months as drivers become used to seeing the painted bars.Chevrons, scientists say,not only give drivers the impression that they are driving faster than they really are but also make a lane appear to be narrower. The result is a longer lasting reduction in highway sped and the number of traffic accidents.26.The passage mainly discusses __________.A)a new way of highway speed control B)a new pattern for painting highways C)a new approach to training drivers D)a new type of optical illusion27.On roads painted with chevrons, drivers tend to feel that effect on drivers D)will look more attractive29.The American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety plans to __________.A)try out the Japanese method in certain areas B)change the road signs across the countryC)replace straight, horizontal bars with chevrons D)repeat the Japanese road patterns30.What does the author say about straight, horizontal bars painted across roads?A)They are falling out of use in the United StatesB)They tend to be ignored by drivers in a short period of time.C)They are applicable only on broad roads.D)They cannot be applied successfully to traffic circles.Passage ThreeQuestions 31to 35are based on the following passage:Amtrak (美国铁路客运公司)was experiencing a downswing in rider ship(客运量)along the lines comprising its rail system.Of major concern to Amtrak and its advertising agency DDB Needham, were the long-distance western routes where ridership had been declining significantly.]At one time, trains were the only practical way to cross the vast areas of the west.Trains were fast, very luxurious, and quite convenient compared to other forms of transportation existing at the time. However, times change and the automobile became America’s standard of convenience. Also, air travel had easily established itself as the fastest method of traveling great distances. Therefore, the task for DDB Needham was to encourage consumers to consider other aspects of train travel in order to change their attitudes and increase the likelihood that trains would be considered for travel in the west. Two portions of the total market were targeted:1)anxious fliers-thoseconcerned with safety, relaxation, and cleanliness and 2)travel-lovers-those viewing themselves as relaxed, casual, and interested in the travel experience as part of their vacation. The agency then developed a campaign that focused on travel experiences such as freedom, escape, relaxation, and enjoyment of the great western outdoors. It stressed experiences gained by using the trains and portrayed western train trips as wonderful adventures.Advertisements showed pictures of the beautiful scenery that could be enjoyed along some of the more famous western routes and emphasized the romantic names of some of these trains (Empire Builder,etc.).These ads were strategically placed among family-oriented TV shows and programs involving nature and America in order to most effectively reach target audiences. Results were impressive. The Empire Builder, which was focused on in one ad,enjoyed a 15percent increase in profits on its Chicago to Seattle route.31.What’s the author’s purpose in writing this passage?A)To show the inability of trains to compete with planes with respect to speed and convenience.B)To stress the influence of the automobile on America’s standard of convenience.C)To emphasize the function of travel agencies in market promotion.D)To illustrate the important role of persuasive communication in changing consumer attitudes.32.It can be inferred from the passage that the drop in Amtrak ridership was due to the fact that ________.A)trains were not suitable for short distance passenger transportationB)trains were not the fastest and most convenient form of transportationC)trains were not as fast and convenient as they used to be D)trains could not compete with planes in terms of luxury and convenience33.To encourage consumers to travel by train,DDB Needham emphasized __________.C l a s s N a m eS I C n u m b e rE x a m T i m eE x a m R o o m装订线A)the freedom and convenience provided on trains B)the practical aspects of train travel C)the adventurous aspects of train trips D)the safety and cleanliness of train trips34.The train ads were placed among family-oriented TV programs involving nature and America because ____________.A)they could focus on meaningful travel experiencesB)they could increase the effectiveness of the TV programs C)their profits could be increased by some 15percentD)most travel-lovers and nervous fliers were believed to be among the audiences35.According to the passage, the Empire Builder enjoyed an increase in ridership and profits because ___________.A)the attractiveness of its name and route was effectively advertised B)it provided an exciting travel exper5ienceC)its passengers could enjoy the great western outdoorsD)it was widely advertised in newspapers and magazines in Chicago and SeattlePassage FourQuestions 36to 40are based on the following passage :Why does cram go bad faster than butter? Some researchers think they have the answer, and it comes down to the structure of the food, not its chemical composition-a finding that could help rid some processed foods of chemical preservatives.Cream and butter contain pretty much the same substances,so why cream should sour much faster has been a mystery. Both are emulsions-tiny globules (小球体)of one liquid evenly distributed throughout another. The difference lies in what’s in the globules and what’s in the surrounding liquid, says Brocklehurst, who led the investigation. In cream, fatty globules drift about in a sea of water. In butter, globules of a watery solution are locked away in a sea of fat.The bacteria which make the food go bad prefer to live in the watery regions of the mixture.“This means that in cream, the bacteria are free to grow throughout the mixture,”he says. When the situation is reversed, the bacteria are locked away in compartments (隔仓室)buried deep in the sea of fat.Trapped in this way, individual colonies cannot spread and rapidly run out of nutrients (养料).They also slowly poison themselves with their waste products.“In butter, you get a self-limiting system which stops the bacteria growing,”says Brocklehurst. The researchers are already working with food companies keen to see if their products can be made resistant to bacterial attack through alterations to the food’s structure.Brocklehurst believes it will be possible to make the emulsions used in salad cream, for instance, more like that in butter. The key will be to do this while keeping the salad cream liquid and not turning it into a solid lump.36.The significance of Brocklehurst’s research is that ____________.A)it suggested a way to keep some foods fresh without preservativesB)it discovered tiny globules in both cream and butterC)it revealed the secret of how bacteria multiply in cream and butterD)it found that cream and butter share the same chemical composition37.According to the researchers, cream sours fast than butter because bacteria _________.A)are more evenly distributed in creamB)multiply more easily in cream than in butter C)live on less fat in cream than in butter D)produce less waste in cream than in butter38.According to Brocklehurst,we can keep cream fresh by ___________.A)removing its fat B)killing the bacteriaC)reducing its water content D)altering its structure39.The word “colonies”(Line 2,Para.4)refers to __________.A)tiny globules B)watery Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). you should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage:Many families in the United States have a larger income now than ever before, but people are finding it difficult to make ends meet anyway. Almost everyone is wondering, “What happens to all my money? I never seem to have anything left to put away.”Why isn’t a dollar worth as mush as it used to be?One dollar is always worth the same amount, that is, 100 cents. But the value of a dollar is how much it can buy. The value of money depends on the cost of living. Economists say that the cost of living is the money that a family must pay for the necessities of life such as food, housing or rent, clothes, and medical expenses. For many years now, the cost of living has increased greatly,so the value of the dollar has decreased. When a dollar has a low value, you cannot buy as many things with it.No one fully understands why the cost of living keeps increasing, but economists believe that workers and producers can make prices go up. As workers earn more money, they have more money to spend, so they demand more goods. If there is a great demand for certain goods, the prices of these goods go up. At the same time,if there’s a shortage of goods, the prices also go up. For example, if everyone wants to buy more and more gas,the price of gas goes up. When companies withhold (不不不) gas from buyers, they can also make the price of gas go up.Families need to know what happens to their money. Theyneed to make their income meet the cost of living,so many people plan a family budget.A budget is a list of monthly expenses. If your expenses add up to more than your income, you must find ways to save money. Maybe you’re spending too much on entertainment. Or if you’re spending too much on clothes, you may want to sew your own clothes. Budgeting helps you spend your money wisely as the cost of living increases.31. Why can’t a dollar buy as much as it used to?A. The cost of living has decreased.B. The dollar isn’t worth the same amount.C. The dollar has a lower value.D.A dollar can buy more than it did before.32.While the cost of living increases, the value of the dollar_________.A. decreasesB. increases tooC. neither increases nor decreasesD. seldom decreases33. Why does the cost of living keep increasing?A.People have less money and can not afford more goods.B.The workers are asking for higher pay.C. The government makes no interference.D. People demand more and better goods.34. What can we infer from the Paragraph 2?A. Families need to plan a budget to keep the value of their money.B. People want to buy as many things with the same amount of money as before.C. There seems no need for everyone to know about the rising cost of living.D.A budget can help increase the value of the dollar.35. Budgeting helps___________.A. one to make his income meet the cost of livingB. people increase their incomeC. merchants to produce more goodsD. the workers to earn more moneyQuestions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage: In the United States, it is not normal to telephone someonevery early in the morning. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 p. m. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it’s a matter of life and death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance. In social life, time plays a very important role. In the U. S. A. guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But this is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time is different in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings arise between people from cultures that treat time differently. To be on time is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not on time, they may be regarded as not polite or not fully responsible. In the U. S. no one would think of keeping a business associate waiting for an hour;it would be bad-mannered.A person who is five minutes late is expected to apologize. If he is less than five minutes late, he will say a few words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence.36. If you telephone someone early in the day,it means ___________________.A. you are expected to explain whyB. you are not kind enoughC. you want to show your concern for himD. you have a very important matter to discuss37. The expression"a matter of life and death"means __________________.A. an issue of the greatest importance and emergencyB. a very important appointmentC. a matter of whether someone should live or dieD. a strong desire to communicate38. In the U. S. A. guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded _______________.A. if the invitation to a dinner party is not extended early enoughB. if the invitation to a dinner party is extended too far in advanceC.if the invitation to a dinner party is not extended repeatedlyD. if the invitation to a dinner party is extended to too many people39. The word"misunderstanding"can be explained as ____________.A. failing to attend a partyB. failing to understand correctlyC. standing in one's wayD. standing on one's own two feet40. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?A. In the U. S. it's normal to keep someone waiting for some time.B. In the U. S. it's not polite to keep someone waiting for an hour.C. In the U.S. one is always expected to be on time.D.In the U.S.one is expected to apologize if he is five minutes late.Questions 41 to 45 are based on the following passage: If you want to stay young, sit down and have a good think. This is the research finding of a team of Japanese doctors, who say that most of our brains are not getting enough exercise ...and as a result, we are aging unnecessarily soon. Professor Taiju Matsuzawa wanted to find out why otherwise healthy fanners in northern Japan appeared to be losing their ability to think and reason at a relatively early age, and how the process of aging could be slowed down. With a team of colleagues at Tokyo National University,he set about measuring brain volumes of a thousand people of different ages and varying puter technology enabled the researchers to obtain precise measurements of the volume of the front and side sections of the brain, which relate to intellect and emotion, and determine the human character. (The rear section of the brain, which controls functions like eating and breathing, does not contract with age, and one can continue living without intellectual or emotional faculties.) Contraction of front and side parts ...as cells die off—was observed in some subjects in their thirties, but it was stillnot evident in some sixty-and-seventy-year-olds.Matsuzawa concluded from his tests that there is a simple remedy to the contraction normally associated with age-”using the head. The findings show in general terms that contraction of the brain begins sooner in people in the country than in the towns. Those least at risk, says Matsuzawa, are lawyers, followed by university professors and doctors. White-collar workers doing routine work in government offices are, however, as likely to have shrinking brains as the farm worker, bus driver and shop assistant. Matsuzawa’s findings show that thinking can prevent the brain from shrinking. Blood must circulate properly in the head to supply the fresh oxygen the brain cells need.“The best way to maintain good blood circulation is through using the brain.” He says, “Think hard and engage in conversation. Don't rely on pocket calculators.”41. The team of doctors wanted to find out ____________.A. why certain people age sooner than othersB. how to make people live longerC. the size of certain people's brainsD. which people are most intelligent42. Which of the following is true?A.Generally, people work in the government doesn't age as soon as people in the town.B. The back of the brain is in charge with people's eating.C. The easy way to prevent brain from aging is to supply fresh oxygen the brain cells need.D. We look young because we have enough physical exercises.43. The doctor's tests show that _____________.A. our brains shrink as we grow olderB. the front section of the brain does not shrinkC. sixty-year-olds have better brains than thirty-year-oldsD. the back of the brain shrinks44. According to the passage, which group of people seems to age sooner than the others?A. Lawyers.B. Professors.C. Doctors.D. White collars.45. The article is possibly written for ____________.A.college junior studentsB. the general publicC. doctors and nurses in hospitalsD. university professorsQuestions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage: In the United States many have been told that anyone can become rich and successful if he works hard and has some good luck.Yes, when one becomes rich he wants people to know it. And even he does not become very rich. He wants people to think he is. That’s what “Keeping up with the Joneses” is about. The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American by the name of Arthur Momand.Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things to keep up with their neighbors; they try to look as rich and as successful as their neighbors. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it “Keeping up with the Joneses”, because “Jones” is a very common name in the United States.“Keeping up with the Joneses” came to mean keeping up with the people around you.Momand’s series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 yeas.People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. That is one reason why they read the “right” books, go to the “right” universities and eat in the “right”restaurants.Every city has an area where people want to live because others will think better of them if they do. And there are “Joneses” in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keeping up with the Joneses, because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead.46. Why according to the passage, do many people try to keep up with the Joneses?A. Because they want to be as rich as their neighbors.B. Because they feel proud to be taken for the Joneses.C. children every year.Newborn babies are particularly weak as they cannot control their body temperature. It takes just two minutes for a wet, newborn baby to lose a dangerous two degrees. Most of this facts"forgotten"by people during a busy day may be retrieved if this is followed by a good night's sleep.Researchers from the University of Chicago asked volunteers to remember simple words. Many found their memories letting them down towards the end of the day,but the following morning, those who had slept well could recall much more.Researchers, writing in the journal Nature, said the brain could"rescue"lost memories during the night. When the brain is first asked to remember something, that memory is laid down in an"unstable"state, meaning that it is possible that it could be lost.At some point, the brain consolidates important things into a"stable",more permanent state. However, the Chicago researchers suggested that it was possible for a"stable"memory to be made "unstable"again. This would mean that memories could be modified then filed away again in the face of new experiences.The12volunteers tested in the experiment were played words created through a speech synthesizer(合成器)which were purposely difficult to understand.Initially, the written version of the word was available, but afterwards the volunteers were asked to identify the word from the audio version only.Tests revealed that the ability to recall the right word tended to tail off as the day ended. However, when the volunteers were retested after a good night's sleep, they were able to recall some words that they had"forgotten"the previous evening.Dr Daniel, one of the study authors, said:"Sleep consolidates memories, protecting them against subsequent interference or decay.”He added:"Sleep also appears to'recover'or restore memories. If performance is reduced by decay, sleep might actively recover what has been lost."Dr Karim Nader, from the Department of Psychology in McGill University in Montreal, said:"Memory research is undergoing a transformation-no longer is memory thought to be a hard-wiring of the brain, instead it seems to be a process of storage and re-storage.Sleep helps some memories'mature'and also prunes out unimportant memories."76.The underlined words“prunes out’in the last paragraph means_____.A.consolidatesB.deletesC.rescuesD.keeps77.What can be inferred from the passage?A.The audio version seems to be more helpful than the written version.B.Interference and decay may affect one’s memory.C.The ability to recall the right word was greatly improved as the day ended.D.The volunteers who had a good night’s sleep were able to recall some“forgotten”words.78.Which of the following statements is FALSE?A.Words consolidated into a stable state will never be forgotten.B.Memory is an active process rather than an unchanged state.C.Memory used to be considered as a hard-wiring of the brain.D.A good sleep helps the brain to rescue the lost memory.79.What’s the best title for the passage?A.How the Brain Works.B.Sleep Helps Memory.C.Research Transformation.D.Lost and Found.Section CDirections:Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading years’progressD.The overall findings on UK children’s reading skillsE.Almost no improvement can be foundF.Teachers aim at increasing scores80.A recent review published by the University of Cambridge shows that half a billion pounds spent attempting to raise the standard of English in primary schools in the UK has had almost no impact on children’s reading skills and pupils are losing their love of reading in the drive to improve literacy levels, the Guardian has reported.81.The first report from the UK National Foundation for Educational Research found that standards in British primary schools compared favorably with other countries’results. In reading,British primaries were in the top group of countries.Schools Minister Lord Adonis said that the2007result in reading showed84percent of11-year-olds achieved the expected level for their age group,up17percent since1997.82.However,the Durham University study, led by Peter Tymms, concluded that the National Literacy Strategy, which included the“literacy hour”daily English lesson, had made a“barely noticeable”impression on reading standards, which had hardly improved since the1950s.Nick Gibb, the Shadow School Minister, said:“Millions of pounds have been spent on education but we haven’t seen improvements. As a result, many children particularly those from poorer backgrounds, are not getting the opportunities they deserve.”83.Wynn Harlen from the University of Bristol gave warning in his report that teachers were under great pressure of tests to increase scores by coaching pupils in how to answer questions.84.The review also warned that British primary pupils’relatively high attainment in reading skills was at the expense of their enjoyment of reading.David Laws, the Liberal Democrat schools spokesman, said:“There should be a real concern that the report shows that enjoyment is being squeezed out of learning. We must not turn out schools into factories producing test results.”第II卷(共45分)I.TranslationDirections:Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.1.乘火车去北京很方便。

2018年大学英语第一学期期末考试(A卷)Part II Reading Comprehension (30 %) Directions: There are four passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) andD). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on theAnswer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage OneScience is not a set of unquestionable results but a way of understanding the world around us. Its real work is slow. The scientific method , as many of us learned in school, is a gradual process that begins with a purpose or problem or question to be answered. It includes a list of materials, a procedure to follow, a set of observations to make and, finally, conclusions to reach. In medicine, when a new drug is proposed that might cure or control a disease, it is first tested on a large random group of people, and their reactions are then compared with those of another random group not given the drug. All reactions in both groups are carefully recorded and compared, and the drug is evaluated. All of this takes time and patience. It’s the result of course, that makes the best news—not the years of quiet work that characterize the bulk of scientific inquiry. After an experiment is concluded or an observation is made, the result continues to be examined critically. When it is submitted for publication, it goes to a group of the scientist’s colleagues, who review the work. Einstein was right when he said: “No amount of experimentation can ever prove me right, a single experiment can at any time prove me wrong.”In August 1996, NASA announced the discovery in Antarctica of a meteorite(流星)from Mars that might contain evidence of ancient life on another world. As President Clinton said that day, the possibility that life existed on Mars billions of years ago was potentially one of the great discoveries of our time. After the excitement wore down and initial papers were published, other researchers began looking at samples from the same meteorite. Some concluded that the “evidence of life”was mostly contamination from Antarctic ice or that there was nothing organic at all in the rock. Was this a failure of science, as some news reports trumpeted? No! It was a good example of the scientific method working the way it is supposed to. Scientists spend years on research, announce their findings, and these findings are examined by other scientists. That’s how we learn. Like climbing a mountain, we struggle up three feet and fall back two. It’s a process filled with disappointments and reverses, but somehow we keep moving ahead.21. The author’s main purpose in writing this passage is to state that ____________.A) most scientific discoveries are not reliableB) mass media is misleading because it looks at the research results onlyC) scientific research is a process filled with reverses and requires slow and patientworkD) repeated experiments are necessary before medicine can be used in patients22. Publication of a scientific finding signifies __________.A) a challenge to fellow scientists to prove it wrongB) the end of a processC) the beginning of a new scientific inquiryD) the soundness of the result23. Einstein’s words are used to show that he thought___________.A) experiments have proved him rightB) scientists do not need so many experimentsC) one experiment is not enough to prove him wrong.D) scientific ideas are never free from challenge24. NASA’s announcement of the discovery of evidence of ancient life on Mars shows _________.A) the way human beings learn about natureB) the failure of the scientific methodC) the fruitlessness of human search for life on another worldD) the excitement brought by scientific findings25. It can be inferred from the passage that the media is interested in __________.A) the process of scientific researchB) the results of scientific researchC) the scientists who do the researchD) the effects of scientific research on human lifePassage TwoNormally a student must attend a certain number of courses in order to graduate, and each course which he attends gives him a credit which he may count towards a degree. In many American universities the total work for a degree consists of thirty-six courses each lasting for one semester. A typical course consists of three classes per week for fifteen weeks; while attending a university a student will probably attend four or five courses during each semester. Normally a student would expect to take four years attending two semesters each year. It is possible to spread the period of work for the degree over a longer period. It is also possible for a student to move between one university and another during his degree course, though this is not in fact done as a regular practice. For every course that he follows a student is given a grade, which is recorded, and the recordis available for the student to show to prospective employers. All this imposes a constant pressure and strain of work, but in spite of this some students still find time for great activity in student affairs. Elections to positions in student organizations arouse much enthusiasm. The effective work of maintaining discipline is usually performed by students who advise the academic authorities. Any student who is thought to have broken the rules, for example, by cheating has to appear before a student court. With the enormous numbers of students, the operation of the system does involve a certain amount of activity. A student who has held one of these positions of authority is much respected and it will be of benefit to him later in his career.26. Normally a student would at least attend __________classes each week.A) 36B) 12C) 20D) 1527. According to the first paragraph an American student is allowed _______.A) to live in a different universityB) to take a particular course in a different universityC) to live at home and drive to classesD) to get two degrees from two different universities28. American university students are usually under pressure of work because_________.A) their academic performance will affect their future careersB) they are heavily involved in student affairsC) they have to observe university disciplineD) they want to run for positions of authority29.Some students are enthusiastic for positions in student organizations probablybecause_________.A) they hate the constant pressure and strain of their studyB) they will then be able to stay longer in the universityC) such positions help them get better jobsD) such positions are usually well paid30. The student organizations seem to be effective in _________.A) dealing with the academic affairs of the universityB) ensuring that the students observe university regulationsC) evaluating students’ performance by bringi ng them before a courtD) keeping up the students’ enthusiasm for social activitiesPassage ThreeDoreen Sykora is now a junior at Mcgill University. She had a difficult time when she first began college. She said, “I was always well prepared for my examinations. But I would go in to class to take the exam, and I would fall apart. I could not answer the questions correctly-----eventhough I knew the answers! I would just blank out because of nervousness and fear.”Hitoshi Sakamoto, an anthropology student at Temple University in Tokyo reports similar experiences. These two young students were experiencing something called test anxiety. Because a student worries and is stressed about a test, his or her mind does not work as well as it usually does. The student cannot write or think clearly because of the severe tension and nervousness. Now there are special university courses to help students. In these courses, advisors and psychologists try to help students by teaching them to manage test anxiety. Such a course helps students learn to live with stress and not fail because of it. First students take a practice test to measure their worry level. If the tests show that their stress level is high, the students can take a short course to manage the fear. These courses teach students how to relax their bodies. They get training to become calm in very tense situations. By controlling their nervousness, they can let their minds work more easily. Learned information then comes out without difficulty on a test.Doreen Sykora saw immediate results after taking such a course. She now has enthusiasm about the relaxation methods. “Mostly, what I do is imagine myself in a very calm place. Then I imagine myself picking up a pencil. I move slowly and carefully. I breathe easily and let all the tension out. With each breath, more worry leaves me. It really works too. My grades have improved greatly! I’m really doing well at McGill now. This relaxation method works not only on examinations, but it has improved the rest of my life as well.”For Hitoshi in Tokyo, the results were much the same. He is enjoying school a lot more and learning more.31. Doreen Sykora and Hitoshi Sakamoto were filled with nervousness and fear duringexaminations because they were__________.A) not ready and unaware of the answersB) physically so weak that they fell apartC) subject to test anxietyD) unable to write or think clearly32. The higher the students’ worry level is, __________.A) the less calm and relaxing they areB) the more difficult they will be trained to manage fearC) the more stressed and tense they areD) the longer courses they will take to manage fear33. What’s the purpose of some special university student-help courses?A) To help students to reduce test anxiety.B) To show a stress level experienced by students.C) To learn more knowledge about test anxiety.D) To have a better understanding of test anxiety.34.
