CCS MTII

Choosethe right answer for each question. Write your answers on the answer sheet.Passage 1Billy is 14 years old and in the ninth grade. He has a part-time job which gets him up every morning at 5 o'clock. He is a newspaper boy. Each morning,Billy leaves the house at 5:15 to go to the corner, where the newspapers are. The newspapers are delivered to the corner by truck at midnight. He always takes a wagon to carry them.In the winter, it is still dark when he gets up,but during the rest of the year it is light. Billy must deliver the newspapers to the houses of people on his route in all kinds of weather. He tries to put each paper on the porch(门廊)where it will be protected from wind and rain or snow. His customers think he does a good job. Sometimes they give him tips(小费).Billy earns about $ 70 per month, and he is saving some of the money to go to college. He spends the rest on records and clothes. Once a month,he has to collect money from his customers. Since many of them work during the day,Billy has to collect the money at night. Sometimes, when Billy is sick, his brother has to deliver the newspapers. Once,Billy's father had to help. Billy has seventy customers now,but he hopes to get more soon. Someday,if he gets more customers,Billy might win a prize for being an outstanding(突出的)newspaper boy. He wants to win a trip to Europe, but he will be happy if he wins a new bicycle.31. Keeping a part-time job tells us that Billy ______.[A] has to make a living by himself[B] can not get any support from his family[C] has to pay for his school tuition[D] is independent and self-confident32. He did his work ______.[A] perfectly well [B] twice a week[C] only for fun [D] to support his family33. The prize for an outstanding newspaper boy is ______.[A] a trip to Europe[B] a new bicycle[C] a tip[D] A or BPassage 2Friends or contemporaries(同龄人)are a great influence on the actions, thoughts, and words of young people. This influence, known as peer pressure,is quite common among children. Why are children so easily affected by what their peers do,think,or say? Most of us,children included, feel a strong need to be liked by others. We seek acceptance and friendship. In order to gain them,we act like our friends, and listen to their advice, whether or not it is helpful. Some of us even begin to think like our friends, sometimes at the expense of our own beliefs and values. An example that comes to mind is the young person who gets involved with drugs because his peer group is experimenting with them. Parents may try to exert pressure to keep him away from drugs, but frequently peer pressure is too great. This conflict between being your own person and,at the same time, responding to the pressures of a group remains a problem for young people.36. The passage mainly talks about _____.[A] friendship[B] peer pressure[C] conflicts between young people and their parents[D] problems for young people37. In the third sentence of the second paragraph,"them" refers to _____.[A] children[B] strong needs to be liked by others[C] acceptance and friendship[D] our friends' advice38. "being your own person” in the last sentence most probably means _____.[A] acting according to your own beliefs and values[B] trying not to tell any lie[C] keeping yourself away from drugs[D] having enough self-confidence39. The second paragraph focuses on _____.[A] what peer pressure is[B] how young people start to take drugs[C] what parents should do for their children[D] why young people are easily influenced by their peers40. Who can influence us on the actions, thoughts? _____.[A] Teacher[B] Father[C] Mother[D] Friends and contemporariesPassage 3Background music may seem harmless, but it can have a powerful effect on those who hear it. Recorded background music first found its way into factories, shops and restaurants in the US. But it soon spread to other parts of the world. Now it is becoming increasingly difficult to go shopping or eat a meal without listening to music. To begin with,"muzak"(音乐广播网)was intended simply to create a soothing atmosphere. Recently, however,it's become big business - thanks in part to recent research. Dr. Ronald Milliman,an American marketing expert, has shown that music can boost(促进)sales or increase factory production by as much as a third. But,it has to be light music. A fast one has no effect at all on sales. Slow music can increase receipts by 38%. This is probably because shoppers slow down and have more opportunity to spot items they like to buy. Yet,slow music isn't always answer. liman found, for example, that in restaurants slow music meant customers took longer to eat their meals, which reduced overall sales. So restaurant owners might be well advised to play up-tempo music to keep the customers moving - unless of course, the resulting indigestion leads to complaints!41. The reason why background music is so popular is that ______.[A] it is harmless everywhere[B] it can boost sales in all places[C] it can help to create a soothing atmosphere[D] it can help to have more meals42. Background music means ______.[A] light music[B] slow music[C] fast music[D] the music you are listening to while you are doing something43. Restaurant owners complain about background music because ______.[A] it results in indigestion[B] it keeps customers moving[C] it increases their sales [D] it decreases their sales44. The word "up-tempo music"(para. 3 the last line but two) probably means ______.[A] slow music[B] light music[C] fast music[D] classical music45. According to this passage, we learned that ______[A] Dr. Milliman made background music.[B] background music spread to the world by Dr. Milliman.[C] Dr. Milliman found fast music meant customers took longer to eat.[D] background music can have a powerful effect on some people.IV. Translation. (2 points for each, altogether 10 points)Directions: There are five sentences followed by the translated versions in this section. Beneath each sentence there are four choices respectively marked by letters A, B, C and D. Choose the right translation for each sentence. Write your answers on the answer sheet.46.战争已经威胁了这些人们几十年,他们似乎已学会接受这一现实了。

Reading Comprehension(30 points, 2 points for each item)Passage OneQuestions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage. Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there's a big difference between “ being a writer ” and writing. In most cases these individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours a lone at a typewriter. “ You ’ve got to want to wri te, ” I say to them, “ not want to be a writer ” .The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor — paying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20 — year career in the U.S. Coast Guard to become a freelance writer ( 自由撰稿者), I had no prospects at all. What I did have was a friend who found me in my room in a New York apartment building. It didn't even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used manual typewriter and felt like a genuine writer. After a year or so, however, I still hadn't gotten a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that barely made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn't going to be one of those people who die wondering, What if? I would keep putting my dream to the test —— even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the Shadowland of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there.21. The passage is meant to . 答案:AA. warn young people of the hardships that a successful writer has to experienceB. advise young people to give up their idea of becoming a professional writerC. show young people it's unrealistic for a writer to pursue wealth and fameD. encourage young people to pursue a writing career22. What can be concluded from the passage? 答案:DA. Genuine writers often find their work interesting and rewarding.B. A writer's success depends on luck rather than on effort.C. Famous writers usually live in poverty and isolation.D. The chances for a writer to become successful are small.23. Why did the author begin to doubt himself after the first year of his writing career? 答案:BA. He wasn't able to produce a single book.B. He hadn't seen a change for the better.C. He wasn't able to have a rest for a whole year.D. He found his dream would never come true.24. “ ... people who die wondering, What if? ” (Line 3, para.3) refers to “ those ” .答案:BA. who think too much of the dark side of lifeB. who regret giving up their career halfwayC. who think a lot without making a decisionD. who are full of imagination even upon death25. “Shadowland” in the last se ntence refers to .答案:CA. the wonderland one often dreams aboutB. the bright future that one is looking forward toC. the state of uncertainty before one's final goal is reachedD. a world that exists only in one's imaginationPassage TwoQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.Britain almost more than any other country in the world must seriously face the problem of building upwards, that is to say of accommodating a considerable proportion of its population in high blocks of flats. It is said that the Englishman objects to this type of existence, but if the case is such, he does in fact differ from the inhabitants of most countries of the world today. In the past our own blocks of flats have been associated with the lower-income groups and they have lacked the obvious provisions, such as central heating, constant hot water supply, electrically operated lifts from top to bottom, and so on, as well as such details, important notwithstanding (然而), as easy facilities for disposal of dust and rubbish and storage places for baby carriages on the ground floor, playgrounds for children on the top of the buildings, and drying grounds for washing. It is likely that the dispute regarding flats versus (对, 对抗) individual houses will continue to rage on for a long time as far as Britain is concerned. And it is unfortunate that there should be hot feelings on both sides whenever this subject is raised. Those who oppose the building of flats base their case primarily on the assumption (设想)that everyone prefers an individual home and garden and on the high cost per unit of accommodation. The latter ignores the higher cost of providing full services to a scattered community and the cost in both money and time of the journeys to work for the suburban resident.26. We can infer from the passage that .答案:BA. English people, like most people in other countries, dislike living in flatsB. people in most countries of the world today are not opposed to living in flatsC. people in Britain are forced to move into high blocks of flatsD. modern flats still fail to provide the necessary facilities for living答案:A27. What is said about the blocks of flats built in the past in Britain?A. They were mostly inhabited by people who did not earn much.B. They were usually not large enough to accommodate big families.C. They were sold to people before necessary facilities were installed.D. They provided playground for children on the top of the buildings.28. The word “ rage ” (Line 10) means “” .答案:BA. be ignoredB. develop with great forceC. encourage people greatlyD. be in fashion29. Some people oppose the building of flats because . 答案:CA. the living expenses for each individual family are higherB. it involves higher cost compared with the building of housesC. they believe people like to live in houses with gardensD. the disposal of rubbish remains a problem for those living in flats30. The author mentions that people who live in suburban houses . 答案:DA. do not have access to easy facilities because they live away from the cityB. have to pay a lot of money to employ people to do service workC. take longer time to know each other because they are a scattered communityD. have to spend move money and time travelling to work every dayPassage ThreeQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.Brazil has become one of the developing world’s great successes at reducing population growth - but more by accident than design. While countries such as India have made joint efforts to reduce birth rates, Brazil has had better result without really trying, says George Martine at Harvard.Brazil's population growth rate has dropped from 2.99% a year between 1951 and 1960 to 1. 93% a year between 1981 and 1990, and Brazilian women now have only 2.7 children on average. Martine says this figure may have fallen still further since 1990, an achievement that makes it the envy of many other Third World countries.Martine puts it down to, among other things, soap operas (通俗电视连续剧) and installment (分期付款) plans introduced in the 1970s. Both played an important, although indirect, role in lowering the birth rate. Brazil is one of the world’s biggest producers of soap operas. Globo, Brazil's most popular television network, shows three hours of soaps six nights a week, while three others show at least one hour a night. Most soaps are based on wealthy characters living the high life in big cities.“ Although they have never really tried to work in a message towards the problems of reproduction, they describe middle and u pper class values ——not many children, different attitudes towards sex, women working, ” says Martine. “ They sent this image to all parts of Brazil and made people conscious of other patterns of behavior and other values, which were put into a very attractive packag e. ”Meanwhile, the installment plans tried to encourage the poor to become consumers. “ This led to an enormous ch ange in consumption patterns and consumption was incompatible (不相容的) with unlimited reproduction, ” says Martine.31. According to the passage, Brazil has cut back its population growth .答案:DA. by educating its citizensB. by careful family planningC. by developing TV programmesD. by chance32. According to the passage, many Third World countries .答案:CA. haven't attached much importance to birth controlB. would soon join Brazil in controlling their birth rateC. haven't yet found an effective measure to control their populationD. neglected the role of TV plays in family planning33. What is Martine’s conclusion about Brazil’s population growth?答案:BA. The increase in birth rate will promote consumption.B. The desire for consumption helps to reduce birth rate.C. Statistics reveal that approximately 25% of people experience some kinds of mental health problem in the course of a year. When you fail to tackle these problems, they are likely to contribute to various illnesses, be it physical or psychological. As a consequence, you may not be able to live a normal life, let alone a fulfilling one.
The causes of mental health problems often vary a lot from one to another. In today’s society, a good number of people are subjected to heavy pressure. Others are lacking in communication skills and feel they are living in a isolated world. In addition, a lot of people are ignorant of psychological knowledge about how to keep mentally fit.
There are a lot of ways to curb mental health problems and keep psychologically healthy. Firstly, find the real cause of your mental health problem and see whether you can do something to make a change. Secondly, learn to relax yourself and take exercise to reduce pressure. After all, your health is what counts most. Lastly, you may find it helpful to talk to your partner, a relative or a friend about your problems, or seek support and advice from a psychological consultant.。
