For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage 1How often one hears children wishing they were grown up, and old people wishing they were young again. Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets.Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do. It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. In addition, life is always presenting new things to the child —things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well-known. But a child has his pains: he is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is continually being told not to do things, or being punished for what he has done wrong. When the young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to prison. If, however, he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in society.21. According to Paragraph 2, the writer thinks that _______.A. life for a child is comparatively easyB. a child is always loved whatever he doesC. if much is given to a child, he must do something in returnD. only children are interested in life22. After a child grows up, he_____.A. will have little time playingB. has to be successful in finding a jobC. can still ask for help in time of troubleD. should be able to take care of himself23. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?A. People are often satisfied with their life.B. Life is less interesting for old people.C. Adults are freer to do what they want to do.D. Adults should no longer rely on others.24. The main idea of the passage is that ______.A. life is not enjoyable since each age has some painsB. young men can have the greatest happiness if they work hardC. childhood is the most enjoyable time in one’s lifeD. one is the happiest if he can make good use of each age in his life25. The paragraph following the passage will most probably discuss ______.A. examples of successful young menB. how to build up one’s position in societyC. joys and pains of old peopleD. what to do when one has problems in lifePassage 2Every country tends to accept its own way of life as being the normal one and to praise or criticize others as they are similar to or different from it. And unfortunately, our picture of the people and the way of life of other countries is often a distorted (曲解) one. Here is a great argument in favor of foreign travel and learning foreign languages. It is only by traveling in, or living in a county and getting to know its inhabitants and their language that one can find out what a country and its people are really like. And how different the knowledge one gains this way frequently turns out to be true from the second-hand information gathered from other sources! How often we find that the foreigners whom we thought to be such different people from ourselves are not very different after all!Differences between peoples do of course, exist and, one hopes, will always continue to do so. The world will be a dull place indeed when all the different nationalities behave exactly alike, and some people might say that we are rapidly approaching this state of affairs. With the much greater rapidity and ease of travel, there might seem to be some truth in this at least as far as Europe is concerned. However this may be, at least the greater ease of travel today has revealed to more people than ever before that the Englishman or Frenchman or German is not some different kind of animal from themselves.26. Every country criticizes ways of life in other countries because they are _______.A. distortedB. normalC. similar to each otherD. different from its own27. One who travels in a foreign country and learns its language will ______.A. find out what its people are likeB. argue in favor of this country and the languageC. know the country and its people betterD. like its inhabitants and their language28. The knowledge one gains by traveling in a foreign county is often _______.A. from second-hand informationB. gathered from other sources than from its inhabitantsC. gained from the arguments about the countryD. different from what one had before the travel29. Differences between peoples ________.A. will gradually disappear because of ease of travelB. do exist even though different nationalities behave exactly alikeC. will always continue to exist and the world will be a dull placeD. will not exist as one hopes30. The underlined word “However” most probably means _________.A. somewhatB. by whatever meansC. anyhowD. no matter whatPassage 3We arranged that Kissinger would fly to Vietnam for talks early in July and then stop in Pakistan on the way back. There he would develop a stomachache that would require him to stay in bed and not be seen by the press. Then, with President Yahya’s cooperation he would be taken to an airport where a Pakistan plane would fly him over the mountains to China.Kissinger’s trip was given the code(密码) name Polo after Marco Polo, another Western traveler who made history by journeying to China. Everything went without a hitch. His slight illness in Islamabad received only minor attention from reporters covering him. They accepted the story that he would be confined to bed for at least a couple of days and began making arrangements for their own entertainment.Because of the need for complete secrecy and the lack of any direct communication facilities between Beijing and Washington, I knew that we would have no word from Kissinger while he was in China. Even after he had returned to Pakistan it would still be important to maintain secrecy. So before Kissinger left, we agreed on a single code word —Eureka -which he would use if his mission were successful. On July 11, Al Haig, who knew our code word, phoned me to saythat a cable from Kissinger had arrived.“What’s the message?” I asked.“Eureka,” he replied.31. Kissinger stopped in Pakistan because ______.A. he happened to have a stomachacheB. he needed a rest after a long journeyC. he had a secret mission to perform thereD. he did not want to be seen by the press32. The reporters in Islamabad believed that ______.A. Kissinger was not feeling wellB. Kissinger had just come back from VietnamC. Kissinger had put off leaving for ChinaD. Kissinger was preparing to entertain them33. The statement “everything went without a hitch” (Para.2) most probably means that ______.A. nothing was easy with the missionB. the plans were carried out with great difficultyC. things went smoothlyD. there was no possibility of success34. There was no news from Kissinger while he was in Beijing, chiefly because _______.A. his trip had to be kept secretB. President Yahya did not go with KissingerC. communication between Beijing and Islamabad was difficultD. the negotiation(谈判) was not successful35. The passage implies that Kissinger’s message “Eureka”was sent _______.A. when the negotiation started in BeijingB. as soon as he arrived in WashingtonC. when he flew to Vietnam on July 11D. when the negotiation was completed in BeijingPassage 4No country in the world has more daily newspapers than the U.S.A. There are almost 2,000 of them, as compared with 180 in Japan, 144 in Argentina and 111 in Britain. The quality of some American papers is extremely high and their views are quoted all over the world. Distinguished dailies like the Washington Post or the New York Times have a powerful influence all over the country. However the Post and the Times are not national newspapers in the sense that The times is in Britain or Le Monde is in France, since each American city has its own daily newspaper. The best of these present detailed accounts of national and international news, but many tend to limit themselves to state or city news.Like the press in most other countries, American newspapers range from the “sensational”, which feature crime, sex and rumor, to the serious, which focus on factual news and the analysis of world events. But with few exceptions American newspapers try to entertain as well as give information, for they have to compete with television.Just as American newspapers give way to all tastes, so do they also try and apply to readers for all political persuasions. A few newspapers support extremist (过激分子) groups on the far right and on the far left, but most daily newspapers attempt to attract middle-of-the-road Americans who are essentially moderate. Many of these papers print columns by well-known journalists of different political and social views in order to present a balanced picture. As in other democratic countries American newspapers can be either responsible or irresponsible, but it is generally accepted that the American press serves its country well and that it has more than once bravely uncovered political scandals (丑闻) or crimes, for instance, the Watergate Affair. The newspapers drew the attention of the public to the fears of the Vietnam War.36. There are fewer national newspapers in ______.A. Britain than in the U.S.A.B. France than in BritainC. the U.S.A. than in Britain or FranceD. France than in the U.S.A. or Britain37. Most American newspapers try to entertain their readers because______.A. they have to keep up a good relation with themB. they have to compete with televisionC. they have to write about crime, sex and rumorD. they have to give factual news in an interesting way38. Many American newspapers attract readers of different political tendency by ______.A. supporting extremist groups from time to timeB. inviting middle-of-the-road Americans to write articles for themC. avoiding carrying articles about extremistsD. printing articles representing different political viewpoints39. In this passage the underlined word “press” (Para.2) means ______.A. a machine for printingB. the business of printingC. great forceD. newspapers40. And what makes it so popular? Homestay means living with a family,or“host family”as we say. There are three ways of doing it:choose to learn English in a language school near to your Homestay location:have your English classes in the house with a member of the family who is a qualified teacher;select not to have classes at all when you visit——a popular choice if you want to do the tourist thing for example.Even in their busy summer period the organizations that arrange the Homestays will always try to place you with the most suitable host family to match your requirements.Placement(安置)organizations think about location, interests, language level, eating requirements, allergies (过敏)and other requests you may have.Though prices vary according to your needs, good quality Homestay accommodation can be relatively economical--andalthough you may be charged an extra amount of money if you want your Homestay in or near the city center.Even if you stay further out,you can expect your journey into the center not to exceed 30 minutes. Not only does Homestay accommodation represent value for money,it also gives you an excellent opportunity to practice English with your host family. This is a very important extra for students who like to speak as much English as possible. But if you plan to learn English, why not have your English classes in your host family. There’s no better way to learn English than this—the perfect combination of learning and accommodation combined withthe cultural experience !(本题12分)1(单选题)Homestay is an ideal choice for studentswho __________ .(本题3分)A plan to visit relativesB want to stay at homeC plan to study overseasD want to learn statistics标准答案: C2(单选题)Who will consider students’requirements before their Homestay starts?(本题3分)A The English teacher.B The placement organization.C The host family.D The language school.标准答案: B3(单选题)Which of the following is a key factor affecting the price of Homestay?(本题3分)A Nationality of the host family.B Eating habits of the host family.C Students’language level.D Students’specific needs.标准答案: D4(单选题)What can be inferred from the passage?(本题3分)A The author is in favor of Homestay accommodation.B The author is doubtful about the safety of Homestay.C The author finds Homestay arrangement complicated.D The author finds Homestay accommodation expensive.标准答案: A25(阅读理解题)根据下面材料回答问题:Passage FourUsing 1ess energy around the home is easier than you might think, saving you money while creating a heathier, more comfortable living space for you and your family. Each o f the passages is followed by 5questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET. Passage OneA few centuries ago, people looked at the birds and wondered what it would be like to fly like them. There were stories of heroes who glued bird feathers on their arms and flew up into the sky. About 500 years ago, some people dreamed a different dream. Instead of flying up to the sky, they dreamed of falling from the sky!In the 15th century, Italian inventors designed a cone-shaped(锥形) device that was supposed to bring a man down safely from a great height. The operator held on to a handle with a straps strapped to his waist. This was the first known design for a parachute (降落伞).Even the great inventor Leonardo da Vinci sketched a type of parachute. His parachute design was in the shape of pyramid(金字塔). Other inventors also sketched their owndesigns for a parachute. Unfortunately, these were only designs on paper and no one tested them.A Croatian inventor named Fausto Veranzio looked at Leonardo da Vinci’s parachute design and replaced the pyramid shape with one that looked like a sail from a ship. When Veranzio was 65years old, he fell ill. Thinking he would not live longer, he decided to try out his parachute invention. He built his parachute using wood and cloth. Straping his invention to his waist, he jumped off the tall bell tower in his city. He landed safely! He was supposedly the first man to successfully use a parachute. However, some other people thought this story was not true. If that was the case, then the first person to successfully use a parachute would go to a Frenchman named Louis-Sebastien Lenormand in 1783.16. The first known parachute was designed by ______.A. FrenchmanB. ItalianC. CroatiansD. Englishmen17. Leonardo da Vinci’s parachute was shaped like a ______.A. coneB. featherC. pyramidD. sail18. Which of the following is about Fausto Veranzio is trueA. He copied da Vinci’s parachute design.B. He made his parachute with feather and wood.C. He experimented with his parachute many times.D. He decided to try his parachute after he was seriously ill.19. As for the first man who successfully used a parachute, ______.A. it was said to be Leonardo da VinciB. we know for sure he was VeranzioC. there were some historical recordsD. we don’t know for sure yet20. The passage is mainly about ______.A. the origin of the parachuteB.The dreams of flying and fallingC. the courage of dropping from the skyD. the application of parachute inventionPassage TwoOut of all the students who enroll in a massive open online course(MOOC), only about 5 percent complete the course and receive a certificate accomplishment. This statistic is often cited as evidence thatMOOCs are fatally flawed(有缺陷的)and offer little educational value tomost students. Yet more than 80 percent of students who fill out a post-course survey say they met their primary objective. How do we lookat these two factsWe’re used to focusing on completion rates in higher education, but they’re not the only-or even the most meaningful –indicator of engagement in open online courses. With no cost to enroll, no punishment for dropping out, and little reward for actually earning a certificate, MOOCs are fundamentally different from traditional calssess –and students use them in fundamentally different ways.Data from more than 1.8 million students erolled in 36 MOOCs offered by the University of Pennsylvania show that students treat MOOCs like a buffet (自助餐), sampling the material according to their interests and career goals. Some are curious about the subject matter and just watch one or two video lectures; others use the discussion forums to connect with their intellectual peers around the world. Of all enrolled students, nearly 60 percent watch at least one vedio, complete at least one assignment, or post at least once in a forum. So focusing on the tiny fraction of students who complete a MOCC is misguided. The more important number is the 60 percent engagement rate. Students may not finish a MOOC with a certificate of accomplishment, but the courses nonetheless meet the educational goals of millions.21. What do we learn about MOOCs from Para.1A. There seems to be conflicting statistics about MOOCs.B. It turns out that MOOCs have failed people’s expectations.C. Most students find it hard to judge the value of MOOcs.D. The educational value of MOOCs is well acknowledged.22. In Para.2, the author stresses ______.A. the primary objective of MOOC studentsB. the significance of competion rates in educationC. the strengths and weakness of open online coursesD. the differences between MOOCc and trditional classes23. According to Para. 3, students choose MOOCs for the following reasons EXCEPT ______.A. earning a certificateB. improving job-related skillsC. meeting their interest in the subjectsD. exchanging ideas with students worldwide24. The sentence “students treat MOOCs as a buffet” (Para.3) ______.A. emphasizes the core value of MOCCsB. demonstrates the daily operation of MOOCsC. indicates students are free to choose MOOC resourcesD. explains what students learn from MOOC courses25. What is the author’s attitude toward MOOCsA. Critical.B. Supportive.C. Indifferent.D. Neutral.Passage ThreeWhether you are hiking through the magnificent redwoods of Northern California, sleeping under the brilliant stars of the Texas sky or watching the sun rise across the rocky cliffs of Maine, expecting the outdoor world can be inspiring, thrilling, and deeply satisfying. And one of the best ways to enjoy the abundant gifts of the natural world is simple, inexpensive, and available to almost every one. Let’s go camping. When you camp, you create a “home away from home” in the fresh air. You don’t need a lot o f fency equipment to enjoy camping. What you need is simply a tent large enough for your family. Practice setting up the tent at home to make sure you are familiar with the process before you go camping.Once you find a good site, it’s time to set up tent. Your first job is to set up your tent. Remove all sticks and rocks from the area. Spread a tarp (防水帆布) over the area where your tent will sit. Set up the tent and be sure to stake it down firmly, even if the weather is mild. Otherwise, strong wind can blow your tent away.Next, you’ll need some firewood for a campfire. If gathering wood is illegal at your campground, you must buy it at the camp store. If gathering dead wood is permitted, go on a firewood-hunting journey and bring in a good supply of wood for your campsite, pile the wood safely away from the campfire ring and where no one will trip over the wood or hurt his or her legs on sharp branches.Being a responsible camper requires that you follow the rules of the campground. Do not burn food or plastic in your campfire. Make sure that you leave your campsite in good condition for the next campers. Just before leaving the site, make a final check to be certain that your campfire is completely out. Pour water on the ashes just to be safe! 26. As is suggested by the aurhor, you should practice setting up your tent ______.A. before the weather turns badB. before your first camping upC. after having selected your campsiteD. once you have decided where to go27. The passage is mainly about ______.A. safety measures a camper should takeB. problems you may face as a camperC. what you need to know about campingD. what you need to bring along for campingPassage FourEvery country has secret services to help protect it against serious threats from terrorists, major criminals or even from other countries. People who threaten to harm a country always plot in secret, so the intelligence agencies have to work in secret to find out what is being planned before it happens, so that it can be prevented. They do that in many different ways – by secretly listening to their targets talking on the phone, by planting microphongs to overhear meetings, by watching the targets as they move from place to place and by recruiting some of the targets to act as double agents to report on what is going on.For most of my career I worked in one of the UK’s three intelligence services, MIS, the domestic security service. I first joined in the 1970s, in the middle of the Gold War, when the war was divided into two armedcamps, the Soviet Union(苏联) and its allies on the one side and WesternEurope, America and their allies on the other. The Gold War never became a fighting war. It was an intelligence war, with intelligence officers from both sides trying to find out what the other side was doing, what kind of weapons they had, when and if they might start a war and what their plans were. Both sides were secretly working in each other’s countries.Nowadays one of the biggest threats to the world, comes from terrorists. Intelligence officers from many differenct countries are working together to find out who they are., where they are and what they are planning. Today’s MIS officers get their intelligence in much the sa me way as we did during the Gold War, but their task is even more difficult and urgent because most terrorists want to kill people. Many terrorist attacks that are planned and prepared never happen, and we never know anything about them because the intelligence services find them out and prevent them.31. What is the first paragraph mainly aboutA. The tasks of intelligence agencies.B. The contributions of intelligence agencies.C. The equipment used by intelligence agents.D. The recruitment of intelligence agents.32. The biggest security threats for Britain in the 1970s were from ______.A. international terroristsB. the Soviet Union and its alliesC. major criminals within the countryD. agents working for both camps33. What is true about the Gold WarA. Both camps were planning to start a war.B. It was a war fought with advanced weapons.C. No fierce clash broke out during the period.D. It is not regarded as an intelligence war.34. MIS officers’ task is more urgent today in that ______.A. terrorists are more difficult to find than spiesB. most terrorist attacks are aimed at killing peopleC. terrorist attacks happen more frequently than beforeD. it takes only a little time to prepare a terrorist attack35. He is well known for his large number of inventions which were created after thousands of unsuccessful experiments. Had it not been for his confidence,he would not have succeeded finally. As college students, we should bear in mind that confidencewill provide its owner with motivation and encouragement in face of difficulties. On the contrary, both their knowledge and experience are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in streaming(把……按能力分班)pupils. It does not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the not-so-bright child. After all, it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top grade!Besides, it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one aspect of their total personality. We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their academic ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills and we find that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning. In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups: this gives them the opportunity to learn to cooperate, to share, and to develop their leadership skills. They also learn how to cope with personal problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyze and evaluate, and to communicate effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teacher.Sometimes the pupils work in pairs;sometimes they work on individual tasks and assignments, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently. An advanced pupil can do advanced work;it does not matter what age the child is.We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to attain this goal.21.In the passage the writer's attitude towards "mixed-ability teaching" is ( ).A. criticalB. questioningC. approvingD. objective22.By "held back" the writer means"( )".A.made to remain in the same classesB.forced to study in the lower classesC.drawn to their studiesD.prevented from advancing23. The writer argues that a teacher's chief concern should be the development of the student's ( ).A.personal qualities and social skillsB.total personalityC.learning ability and communicative skillsD.intellectual ability24.Which of the following is not mentioned in the third paragraph?A.Group work gives pupils the opportunity to learn to work together with others.B.Pupils also learn to develop their reasoning abilities.C.Group work provides pupils with the opportunity to learn to be capable organizers.D.Pupils also learn how to participate in teaching activities.25.The writer's purpose in writing this passage is to ( ).A.argue for teaching bright and not-so-bright pupils in the same classB.recommend pair work and group work for classroom activitiesC.offer advice on the proper use of the libraryD.emphasize the importance of appropriate formal classroom teachingPassage TwoThere was a time in my life when beauty meant something special to me.I guess that would have been when I was about six or seven years old, just several weeks or maybe a month before the orphanage(孤儿院)turned me into an old man.I would get up every morning at the orphanage, make my bed just like the little soldier that I had become and then I would get into one of the two straight lines and march to breakfast with the other twenty or thirty boys who also lived in my dormitory. After breakfast one Saturday morning I returned to the dormitory and saw the house parent chasing the beautiful monarch butterflies who lived by the hundreds in the bushes scattered around the orphanage.I carefully watched as he caught these beautiful creatures, one after another, and then took thegn from the net and then stuck straight pins through their head and wings, pinning them onto a heavy cardboard sheet. How cruel it was to kill something of such beauty.I had walked many times out into the bushes, all by myself, just so the butterflies could land on my head, face and hands so I could look at them up close. When the telephone rang the house parent laid the large cardboard paper down on the back cement(水泥) step and went inside to answer the phone.I walked up to the cardboard and looked at the one butterfly who he had just pinned to the large paper. It was still moving about so I reached down and touched it on the wing causing one of the pins to fall out.It started flying around and around trying to get away but it was still pinned by the one wing with the other straight pin. Finally its wing broke off and the butterfly fell to the ground and just trembled.I picked up the torn wing and the butterfly and I spat on its wing and tried to get it to stick back on so it could fly away and be free before the house parent came back. But it would not stay on him.26.The author set the living butterfly free because ( ).A.he liked it very muchB.he had sympathy for the beautiful butterflyC.he couldn't bear a butterfly dying in his favorite bushesD.its wing broke off27.According to the passage, the author's life in the orphanage was ( ).A.dull and full of strict rulesB.simple and easyC.happy and full of hopeD.hard and busy28. What is the author's attitude towards the house parent's pinning some butterflies on the cardboard?A. tolerantB. unconcernedC. disgustedD. discouraged29.We know from the passage that ( ).A.the author lived alone in the dormitoryB.there were one hundred butterflies living in the bushesC.the cardboard paper was left on the step so as to be watchedD.the author failed to stick the worn wing onto the butterfly with his spit30.Which of the following is right according to the passage?A.I found beauty meant nothing special to me.B.The house parent helped the children handle the quilt.C.The house parent chased the butterfly in order to show it to the children.D.I thought it cruel to catch the butterfly.Passage ThreeWhat exactly is a lie? Is it anything we say which we know is untrue? Or is it something more than that? For example, suppose a friend wants to borrow some money from you, you say "I wish I could help you but I'm short of money myself." In fact, you are not short of money but your friend is in the habit of not paying his debts and you don't want to hurt his feeling by reminding him of this.Is this really a lie?Professor Jerald Jellison of the University of Southern California has made a scientific study of lying.According to him, women are better liars than men, particularly when telling a "white lie".For instance, when a woman at a party tells another woman that she likes her dress, she really thinks it looks awful. However, this is only one side of the story. Other researchers say that men are more likely to tell more serious lies, such as making a promise which they have no intention of fulfilling. This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled at: the lie from which the liar hopes to profit or gain in some way.Research has also been done into the way people's behavior changes in a number of small, apparently unimportant ways when they lie. It has been found that if they are sitting down at the time, they tend to move about in their chairs more than usual. To the trained observer they are saying "I wish I were somewhere else now" .They also tend to touch certain parts of the face more often, in particular the nose. One explanation of this may be that lying causes a slight increase in blood pressure. The tip of the nose is very sensitive to such changes and the increased pressure makes it itch.Another gesture which gives liars away is what the writer Desmond Morris in his book Man-watching calls "the mouth cover". He says there are several typical forms of this, such as covering part of the mouth with the fingers, touching the upper-lip or putting the hand at one side of the mouth.Such a gesture can be understood as an unconscious attempt on the part of the liar to stop himself or herself from lying.Of course, such gestures as rubbing the nose or covering the mouth or moving about in a chair cannot be taken as proof that the speaker is lying. They simply tend to occur more frequently in this situation. It is not one gesture alone that gives the liar away but a whole number of things, and in particular the context in which the lie is told.31.According to the passage, a "white lie" seems to be a lie ( ).A.that other people believeB.that other people don't believeC.told in order to avoid offending someoneD.told in order to take advantage of someone32.Research suggests that women ( ).A.are better at telling less serious lies than menB.generally lie far more than men doC.often make promises they intend to breakD.lie at parties more often that men do33.Researchers find that when a person tells lies ( ).A.his blood pressure increases measurablyB.he looks very seriousC.he tends to make some small changes in his behaviorD.he uses his unconscious mind34.One reason people sometimes rub their noses when they tell lies is that ( ).A.they wish they were somewhere elseB.the nose is sensitive to physical changes caused by lyingC.they want to cover their mouthsD.they are trying to stop themselves from telling lies35.Which of the following may best betray a liar?A.The touching of the tip of one's nose.B.The changes of one's behavior.C."The mouth cover" gesture.D.The circumstances in which his lie is told.Passage FourThroughout the past century humanity did everything in its power to control nature. We dammed earth's rivers, chopped down the forests and exhausted the soils. Burning up fuels, we pumped a great deal of greenhouse gases into the air, altering the chemistry of the atmosphere and warming the planet in just a few decades. And as our population began in the year 2000 above the 6 billion mark, still spreading across the continents, dozens of animal and plant species were dying out every, day, including the first primate(灵长类)to disappear in more than 100 years. As the start of the 21st century there were unmistakable signs that nature was beginning to take its revenge. Melting ice in both poles of the earth suggested that the climate was changing rapidly. Weather was even more changeable than usual, giving some places too little rain and others too much.Fires raced across the dried American West last summer, and recent storms spread damages from Britain to China. No specific event could be directly blamed on global warming.Floods and drought will be more frequent and severe.Other sad signs from an overburdenedplanet include falling grain and fish harvests and fierce competition for scarce water supplies. But there were also, in the year 2000, signs of great awareness.Connected by the Internet, hundreds of millions of people gathered for the 30th anniversary of Earth Day. Governments from Washington to Lima took steps to protect the large wild areas from development. Progress was made toward using more renewable energy from the wind and the sun, and new cars that used both gasoline and electricity spotted(显示) fuel-economy statistics. The goal for the new century is "sustainable development" .Is that possible? It depends on how well we understand that humanity is part of nature, not lord and master.36.What is the result of the human control over the nature?A.Natural resources are being exhausted.B.There is a global warming effect.C.Species of animals and plants are reduced.D.All of the above.37.It can be inferred from the passage that scarce water supplies are directly caused by ( ).A.less ice in both polesB.the more changeable weatherC.something not mentioned in the textD.the larger population38.Which of the following is true according to the passage?A.Ameriea suffered a lot from fires last summer.B.The American government tried to stop development.C.Humanity built many dams in the past century.D.Dozens of animals and plants will no longer exist in more than 100 years.39.The phrase " sustainable development" in the last paragraph probably means that economic development will ( ).A.continue for a long timeB.be more profitable than beforeC. support our growing populationD.make full use of natural resources40.The main purpose of the author is to make us ( ).A.see what damage humanity did to natureB.fight with nature and control itC.have more celebrations of Earth DayD.aware of the importance of environment protectionPart Ⅲ Cloze (10 points)Directions: There are 10 blanks in the following passage,For each blank there are 4 choices marked A,B, C and D. You should choose the ONE answer that best fits into the passage. Then mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet One with a single line through the center.Nowadays, air travel is very 41 .We are not surprised when we watch on TV that a politician has talked with French President in Paris and attended a meeting in Beijing on the same day. However, if a person takes long-distance flying frequently, he can be so tired that he maybe feel his brain is in one country, his 42 in another. In a word, he 43 knows where he is.When we fly from east to west or vice versa, the 44 we experience after taking along-distance flying is aggravated, because we cross time zones. According to doctors, air travelers, after crossing several time zones, are in no 45 to go to work, and they should go straight to bed 46 arrival. As to airline pilots who often live by their own watches and ignore local time, there is no need for them to worry about their health although they sometimes have breakfast at midnight, because they are used to 47 and are physically fit. Many businessmen like long-distance flights, thinking they are 48 to have been chosen and they are out for promotion. They are lucky.if the company follows the doctor's advice and allow them to rest for a day or two before working. However, sometimes the manager is so energetic that he believes everyone is 49 to be as fit as he is.Since he has never felt uncomfortable after flying himself, the work he assigns is so 50 that the employee is too exhausted to carry the work out satisfactorily. That is disastrous for the employee's health and the company's reputation.41.A.ordinarymonC.plainual42. A. demeaningB. demandingC. demonstrativeD. deplorablePart IV Translation (20 points)Directions: Read the following passage carefully. Then translate the underlined sentences marked from 51-55 into Chinese. You should write your translation on the Answer Sheet. As part of more comprehensive compliance and ethics programs, many companies have formulated internal policies pertaining to the ethical conduct of employees. These policies can be simple exhortations in broad, highly-generalized language (typically called a corporate ethics statement), or they can be more detailed policies, containing specific behavioral requirements (typically called corporate ethics codes).51They are generally meant to identify the company's expectations of workers and to offer guidance on handling some of the more common ethical problems that might arise in the course of doing business.52 It is hoped that having such a policy will lead to greater ethical awareness , consistency in application, andthe avoidance of ethical disasters.53. An increasing number of companies also requires employees to attend seminars regarding business conduct, which often include discussion of the company's policies, specific case studies, and leEal requirements. Some companies even require their employees to sign agreements stating that they will abide by the company's rules of conduct. Many companies are assessing the environmental factors that can lead employees to engage in unethical conduct.A competitive business environment may call forunethical behavior.Lying has become expected in fields such as trading. An example of this are the issues surrounding the unethical actions of the Saloman Brothers. Not everyone supports corporate policies that govern ethical conduct. Some claim that ethical problems are better dealt with by depending upon employees to use their own judgment.Others believe that corporate ethics policies are primarily rooted in utilitarian concerns, and that they are mainly to limit the company's legal liability, or to curry public favor by giving the appearance of being a good corporate citizen.Ideally, the company will avoid a lawsuit because its employees will follow the rules.54 .Should a lawsuit occur, the company can claim that the problem would not have arisen if the employee had only followed the code properly.Sometimes there is disconnection between the company's code of ethics and the company's actual practices. 55. Thus, whether or not such conduct is explicitly sanctioned by management, at worst, this makes the policy duplicitous(搞两面派的), and, at best, it is merely a marketing tool.Part V Writing(30 points)Study the following cartoon carefully and write an essay on it. (1~5/共15题)Reading Comprehension
Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished .statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.
Doctors have long known that breast-feeding can be good for a baby´s health. This is especially true in poor countries, where water can be contaminated. For instance, a baby given formula in developing countries is 14 times more likely to die in the first six months than one who´s breast-fed. In the U.S. , some research has suggested that breast-feeding may raise a baby´s IQ(智商) by a few points. But a recent study with siblings(兄弟姊妹) found little advantage to breast-feeding.
"Breast-feeding not only has short-term benefits, but also breast-feeding has long-term benefits," says Bernardo Lessa Horta of the Federal University of Pelotas in Brazil, who led the study being published in the Lancet Global Health.
When Horta and his colleagues looked at how much education the subjects had gotten and how much money they were making, they also found a clear difference: Those who were breast-fed stayed the longer in school for about an extra year and had monthly salaries that were about a third higher.
第2题
Which of the following about those who were breast-fed is NOT mentioned?
A.They stayed longer in school.
B.They were happier.
Horta says these previous studies didn´t follow children into adulthood to see if breast-feeding had long-term effects. So Horta analyzed data collected from 3,493 volunteers he and his colleagues have been following since birth. They are now in their 30s. First, the researchers gave the subjects IQ tests. Those who were breast-fed for 12 montthat were 3.76 points higher than those who were breast-fed for less than one month, the team found.
第1题
From the passage, we learn that Horta ______.
A.is from Brazil
B.conducts his research in the U. S.
C.has 30 researchers on his team
D.is well-known in developing countries
Babies who are breast-fed may be more likely to be successful in life, a new study published Tuesday suggests. The study followed more than 3,000 babies into adulthood in Brazil. The researchers found those who were breast-fed scored slightly higher in intelligence tests in their 30s, stayed in school longer and earned more money than those who were given formula(配方奶粉).
