When we read a printed text, our eyes move across a page in short, jerky movement. We recognize words usually when our eyes are still when they fixate. Each time they fixate(专注), we see a group of words. This is known as the recognition span or the visual span. The length of time of which the eyes stop —the duration of the fixation —varies considerably from person to person. It also varies within any one person according to his purpose in reading and his familiarity with the text. Furthermore, it can be affected by such factors as lighting and tiredness. Unfortunately, in the past, many reading improvement courses have concentrated too much on how our eyes move across the printed page. As a result of this misleading emphasis on the purely visual aspects of reading, numerous exercises have been devised to train the eyes to see more words at one fixation. For instance, in some exercises, words are flashed on to a screen for, say, a tenth or a twentieth of a second. One of the exercises has required students to fix their eyes on some central point, taking in the words on either side. Such word patterns are often constructed in the shape of rather steep pyramids so the reader takes in more and more words at each successive fixation. All these exercises are very clever, but it’s one thing to improve a person’s ability to see words and quite another thing to improve his ability to read a text efficiently. Reading requires the ability to understand the relationship between words. Consequently, for these reasons, many experts have now begun to question the usefulness of eye training, especially since any approach which trains a person to read isolated words and phrases would seem unlikely to help him in reading a continuous text.1.The time of the recognition span can be affected by the following facts except______.A.one’s familiarity with the textB.one’s purpose in readingC.the length of a group of wordsD.lighting and tiredness正确答案:C解析:事实细节题。

WritingReading ComprehensionA greenhouse is a building made of glass which is used for keeping plants warm when the outside temperature is low. In a similar way there are several gases in the atmosphere which trap the heat produced by the sun and prevent it from escaping. These gases are known as “greenhouse gases”, and the way in which they trap heat in the atmosphere is called the “greenhouse effect”. This is not simply air pollution. Most of the main greenhouse gases exist naturally in small amounts in our atmosphere, and without them the earth would be 30 degrees colder and human life would not exist. In other words, the greenhouse effect is a natural course which is to some degree helpful to us. The problem is that in the last century and a half, we have been putting too many of these gases into the earth’s atmosphere by burning large quantities of coal and oil and by cutting down forests. The rapid increase in the greenhouse gases is making the world warmer. The world’s temperature has already gone up by half a degree this century, and the sea level has risen by 10 centimeters. If the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere doubles there will be a rise in the earth’s temperature of between 1 and 4. This may seem a small increase, but it would be enough to cause major changes in geography and agriculture. Large areas of the world would be flooded, and some areas would become dry and unable to produce crops. It is important, too, to consider that there may be a delay of about 30 years in the greenhouse effect. This means that we are probably experiencing only now the effect of the gases put into the atmosphere before the 1960s. Since then, these gases have greatly increased.1.“Greenhouse effect” means______.A.the way in which gases are used for keeping plants warmB.natural course which is to some degree helpful to usC.The way “greenhouse gases” trap heat on the earthD.The whole course in which greenhouse gases prevent heat正确答案:C解析:根据第一段第四行the way in which they trap heat in the atmosphere is called the“greenhouse effect”,可知“温室效应”是指把热量保留在大气的行为,故选C。

Everyone was wondering and couldn’t wait to get the answer.Very simple, Mr. Whiteson explained. He had made up all that story about the cattytiger. There had never been such an animal. So why none of us noticed that and how could we expect good marks for the incorrect answers?Needless to say, we got very angry. What kind of teacher was this?We should have guessed it out, Mr. Whiteson said. After all, at the very moment he was passingaround the cattytiger skull (in fact, a cat’s), hadn’t he been telling us that it completely disappear ed during the Ice Age? Clearly he was telling a lie.But we just kept busy making notes and none used his head.We should learn something from this.Teachers and textbooks are not always correct.()44.We failed in the test because we didn’t _____.A.take notes while listeningB.show interest in what Mr. Whiteson saidC.listen to the teacher carefullyD.think carefully()45.We got angry because _____.A.Mr. Whiteson didn’t tell us the truth about cattytigerB.we failed in the testC.we didn’t know why he played the joke on usD.there was no cattytiger()46.Mr. Whiteson gave us a special lesson_____ .A.to show his special way of teachingB.to play a joke on usC.to help us learn our lessons betterD.so that we would no longer believe him()47.Mr. Whiteson meant that _____.A.teachers couldn’t make any mistakesB.textbooks might be wrong sometimesC.we should speak up if we thought our teacher or the textbook was wrongD.we shouldn’t believe our teachers because sometimes they might tell liesPassage FourShopping is not as simple as you may think! There are all sorts of tricks at play each time we reach out for that particular brand (品牌)of product on the shelf.Colouring, for example.,varies according to what the producers are trying to sell. Health foods are packaged (包装)in greens, yellows or browns because we think of these as healthy colours. Ice cream packets are often blue and expensive goods, like chocolates, are gold or silver. When some kind of pain killer was brought out recently, researchers found that the colours turned the customers off because they made the product look weak and ineffective. Eventually.,it came on the market in a dark blue and white package—blue because we think of it as safe, and white as calm. The size of a product can attract a shopper. But quite often a bottle doesn’t contain as much as it appears to.It is believed that the better-known companies spend,on average,70 percent of the total cost of the product itself on packaging! The most successful producers know that it’s not enough to have a good product. Effect of Packaging on ShoppingD. Brand Names and Shopping TricksPassage FiveHave you ever argued with your loved ones over simple misunderstandings(误解)?Little wonder. We often believe we’re more skillful in getting our point across than we actually are, according to Boza Keysar,a professor at the University of Chicago. In his recent study, speakers tried to express their meanings using unclear sentences. Speakers who thought listeners understood were wrong nearly half the time. Here’s some good advice to reduce misunderstanding:(1)Don’t trust what you see from the listener. Listeners often nod, look at you or say"uhhuh"to be polite or move the conversation along. But it’s easy to consider these as signs of understanding.(2)Train the editor(编辑)in your head. If you say,"Beth discusses her problems with her husband,"it’s not clear whether she’s talking to her husband or about him. Try instead,"Beth talks to her husband about her problems."or"Beth talks to others about the problems with her husband."(3)Ask listeners to repeat your message. Introduce your request by saying"I want to be sure I said that right."Questions like"How does that sound?"or"Does that make sense?"may also work. (4)Listen well. When on the receiving end,ask questions to be sure you’re on the same page. After all,it isn’t just the speaker’s job to make his speech understood.()52. Why does the writer give us the advice?A.We’re not skillful enough to make clear sentences.B.Misunderstanding is damaging our normal lives.C. Misunderstanding occurs now and then.D.It’s impolite to say NO to others.()53. The writer suggests that when talking to others, the speaker should _____.A. know that listeners will show him that they understand his wordsB.express himself clearly even when he sees signs of understandingC. notice listener’s signs of understandingD.look directly into his listener’s eyes()54. By Train the editor in your head, the speakers are advised _____.A. to get themselves trained by a good editorB. to discuss problems with their husbands or wivesC. to express themselves in long but simple sentencesD.to make sure each sentence has only one meaning()55. In the last paragraph, the underlined words you’re on the same page mean that _____.A. you’re following the speakers closelyB. you’re reading the same page as the speaker doesC.you should know which page the speaker refers toD. your story is written on the same page as the speaker’sV.Daily Conversation (15 points)Direction:Pick out five appropriate expression from the eight choices below and complete the following dialogue by blackening the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.A.See you this eveningB.I’ve gotta runC.See you againD.won’t be back for supperE.I’ll go to the officeF.Take careG.Don’t worryH.I’ll just take the subway Gary:Dear,I have to go to the office early today. Can you take Sally to school?Ada:Sure.Want me to give you a ride?Gary:No,forget it. 56 .It’s very quick.I’ll pick Sally up this afternoon. You can just comehome after work.Ada:OK.Oh,I almost forgot.I probably 57 .I’ve made an evening appoin tment with Mr.Stevento talk about our next project.Gary:Oh,I see. 58 .Hurry Sally up a little. She hasn’t even had her breakfast yet.Ada:OK. 59 .Love you, honey.Gary:I love you, too. 60 .Directons:For this part, you are supposed to write a composition of about100~200 words according to the following topic.Where to Live—in the City or in the Country?Base your composition on the outline given below.61、(1). 一些人喜欢住在城市,因为城市生活有许多便利。

They record where you are going, how fast you’re traveling and whether everything on your airplane is functioning normally. Their ability to withstand almost any disaster makes them seem like something out of a comic book. They’re known as “the black box”. When planes fall from the sky, as a Yemeni airliner did on its way to Comoros Islands in the Indian ocean on June 30, 2009, the black box is the best bet for identifying what went wrong. So when a French submarine(潜水艇)detected the device’s homing signal five days later, the discovery marked a huge step toward determining the cause of a tragedy in which 152 passengers were killed. In 1958, Australian scientist David Warren developed a flight-memory recorder that would track basic: information like altitude and direction. That was the first mode for a black box, which became a requirement on all U. S. commercial flights by 1960. Early models often failed to withstand crashes, however, so in 1965 the device was completely redesigned and moved to the rear of the plane(the area least subject to impact)from its original position in the landing wells(起落架舱). The same year, the Federal Aviation Authority required that the boxes, which were never actually black, be painted orange or yellow to aid visibility. Modern airplanes have two black boxes; a voice recorder, which tracks pilots’conversations, and a flight-data recorder, which monitors fuel levels, engine noises and other operating functions that help investigators reconstruct the aircraft’s final moments. Placed in an insulated(隔绝的)case and surrounded by quarter-inch-thick panels of stainless steel, the boxes can withstand massive force and temperatures up to 2000?. When submerged, they’re also able to emit signals from depths of 20000 ft. Experts believe the boxes from Air France Flight 447, which crashed near Brazil on June 1 2009, are in water nearly that deep, but statistics say they’re still likely to turn up. In the approximately 20 deep-sea crashes over the past 30 years, only one plane’s black boxes were never recovered.1.What does the author say about the black box?A.It ensures the normal functioning of an airplane.B.The idea for its design comes from a comic book.C.Its ability to ward off disasters is incredible.D.It is an indispensable device on an airplane.正确答案:C解析:根据第一段倒数第二行Their ability to withstand almost any disastermakes them seemlike something out of a comic book.可知黑匣子几乎能够经受住所有的灾难。

浙江专升本(英语)模拟试卷6(题后含答案及解析) 全部题型 2. Reading Comprehension 3. Cloze 5. Translation 6. WritingReading ComprehensionIt is difficult to imagine what life would be like without memory. The meanings of thousands of everyday perceptions, the basis for the decisions we make, and the roots of our habits and skills are to be found in our past experiences, which are brought into the present by memory. Memory can be defined as the capacity to keep information available for later use. It not only includes “remembering” things like arithmetic or historical facts, but also involves any change in the way an animal typically behaves. Memory is involved when a rat gives up eating grain because he has sniffed(嗅出)something suspicious in the grain pile. Memory exists not only in humans and animals but also in some physical objects and machines. Computers, for example, contain devices for storing data for later use. It is interesting to compare the memory storage capacity of a computer with that of a human being. The instant access memory of a large computer may hold up to 100,000 “words”—string of alphabetic or numerical characters—ready for instant use. An average U. S. teenager probably recognizes the meaning of about 100,000 words of English. However, this is but a fraction of the total amount of information that the teenager has stored. Consider, for example, the number of faces and places that the teenager can recognize on sight. The use of words is the basis of the advanced problem-solving intelligence of human beings. A large part of a person’s memory is in terms of words and combinations of words. But while language greatly expands the number and the kind of things a person can remember, it also requires a huge memory capacity. It may well be this capacity that distinguishes humans, setting them apart from other animals.1.Which of the following is TRUE about memory?A.It helps us perceive things happening around us every day.B.It is based on the decisions we made in the past.C.It is rooted in our past habits and skills.D.It connects our past experiences with the present.正确答案:D解析:推断题。

浙江专升本(英语)模拟试卷9(题后含答案及解析) 全部题型 2. Reading Comprehension 3. Cloze 5. Translation 6. WritingReading ComprehensionWho takes care of the elderly in the United States today? The fact is that family members provide over 80% of the care that elderly people need. In most cases the elderly live in their own homes. A very small percentage of America’s elderly live in nursing homes. Samuel Preston, a sociologist at the University of Pennsylvania, studied how the American family is changing. He reported that by the time the average American couple reaches about 40 years of age, their parents are usually still alive. The statistics show the change in lifestyles and responsibilities of aging(老龄化)Americans. The average middle-aged couple can look forward to caring for elderly parents sometime after their own children have grown up. Moreover, because people today live longer after an illness than people did years ago, family members must provide long-term care. These facts also mean that after caregivers provide care for their elderly parents, who will eventually die, they will be old and may require care too. When they do, their spouses(配偶)will probably take care of them because they have had fewer children than their parents did. Because Americans are living longer than ever, more social workers have begun to study ways of caregiving to improve the care of the elderly. They have found that all caregivers share a common characteristic: They believe that they are the best people for the job. The social workers have also discovered three basic reasons why the caregivers take on the responsibility of caring for an elderly, dependent relative. Many caregivers believe they had an obligation(职责)to help their relatives. Some think that helping others makes them feel more useful. Others hope that by helping someone now, they will deserve care when they become old and dependent.1.Samuel Preston’s study shows that .A.lifestyles and responsibilities of the elderly are not changingB.most American couples over 40 have no living parentsC.middle-aged American have to take care of their children and parents at the same timeD.elderly people may need care for a long time because they live longer after an illness正确答案:D解析:概括题。
