You will have 15 minutes to go over the passage quickly and decide whether each of the statements is true or false, or that the information is not given in the passage. Then mark the answer on the Answer Sheet.Renewable EnergyHow does energy use affect the environment? All forms of electricity generation have some level of environmental impact. However, clean energy technologies, including renewable energy and combined heat and power, have fewer impacts than other sources of electricity generation. To learn about the environmental impacts of electricity generation technologies, click on an energy source below. How clean is the electricity I use?In the United States, electricity is generated in many different ways, with a wide variation in environmental impact. Traditional methods of electricity production contribute to air quality problems and the risk of global climate change. With the advent of electric customer choice, many electricity customers can now choose the source of their electricity. In fact, you might now have the option of choosing cleaner, more environmentally friendly sources of energy. How can I make a difference? The energy decisions we make every day can encourage the development of new power sources, save natural resources, and help ensure that the quality of our environment is preserved. In many parts of the country, consumers now have the opportunity to choose the source of the power that is delivered to their home or business—including energy derived from renewable sources. "Renewable energy" generally refers to electricity supplied from renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power (energy supplied by the sun), geothermal (energy created from the extreme heat contained in liquid rock—called magma(岩浆)—within the Earth's core), hydropower (energy derived from the movement of water as it flows downstream), and various forms of biomass (fuel from sources such as trees, wood and agricultural wastes and fuel crops). These energy sources are considered renewable because they are continuously replenished on the Earth. In addition, mobile sources of air pollution—such as cars, trucks, trains and lawnmowers—also contribute to air pollution nationwide and are an important source of air pollution in many urban areas.Hydrogen EnergyUsing hydrogen energy could help address many concerns facing our nation and our world. We believe hydrogen can contribute to resolving these issues for these reasons:Firstly, hydrogen can be made from a variety of domestic feedstocks like water, biomass, coal and natural gas.Second, hydrogen is non-toxic(⽆毒的), non-poisonous and will not contribute to groundwater pollution. It does not create "fumes" or other harmful emissions; in fact, using hydrogen in fuel cells produces only electricity and pure water.Furthermore, hydrogen is a key enabler for the development and more widespread implementation of renewable energy technologies, resulting in cleaner and more efficient products in the marketplace.Fifty million tons of hydrogen is produced each year worldwide, with nine million tons being consumed in the U.S. The challenge is to bring hydrogen into the everyday lives of customers as they begin to use hydrogen-powered vehicles and other applications.Geothermal EnergyOur earth's interior—like the sun—provides heat energy from nature. This heat—geothermal energy—yields warmth and power that we can use without polluting the environment. Geothermal heat originates from Earth's fiery consolidation of dust and gas over 4 billion years ago. At earth's core—4,000 miles deep—temperatures may reach over 9,000 degrees F.Solar EnergySunlight, or solar energy, can be used directly for heating and lighting homes and other buildings, for generating electricity, and for hot water heating, solar cooling, and a variety of commercial and industrial uses. After the 1973 oil embargo(禁运), there was a resurgence(复苏,波动再起)of interest in solar energy. Faced with a possibility of scarce oil resources, the United States government allocated $400 million per year, from a mere $1 million per year, for solar energy research. The expenditure is small compared to the expenditure on nuclear research. Currently, there is a need for allocating increased resources in solar research. Compared to the old forms of reducible energy (coal, oil, nuclear), solar energy offers a clean renewable form of energy. This presentation will provide an overview of the past, present and future of solar energy.Wind EnergyWe have been harnessing the wind's energy for hundreds of years. From old Holland to farms in the United States, windmills have been used for pumping water or grinding grain. Today, the windmill's modern equivalent—a wind turbine(涡轮机)—can use the wind's energy to generate electricity.Wind turbines, like windmills, are mounted on a tower to capture the most energy. At 100 feet (30 meters) or more aboveground, they can take advantage of the faster and less turbulent wind. Turbines catch the wind's energy with their propeller-like blades. Usually, two or three blades are mounted on a shaft to form a rotor(旋转部分,旋转器).A blade acts much like an airplane wing. When the wind blows, a pocket of low-pressure air forms on the downwind side of the blade. The low-pressure air pocket then pulls the blade toward it, causing the rotor to turn. This is called lift. The force of the lift is actually much stronger than the wind's force against the front side of the blade, which is called drag. The combination of lift and drag causes the rotor to spin like a propeller, and the turning shaft spins a generator to make electricity.Wind turbines can be used as stand-alone applications, or they can be connected to a utility power grid(蓄电池电极板)or even combined with a photovoltaic(光电的)(solar cell) system. For utility-scale sources of wind energy, a large number of wind turbines are usually built closetogether to form a wind plant. Several electricity providers today use wind plants to supply power to their customers. Ocean Energy BasicsThe ocean can produce two types of energy: thermal energy from the sun's heat, and mechanical energy from the tides and waves.Oceans cover more than 70% of Earth's surface, making them the world's largest solar collectors. The sun's heat warms the surface water a lot more than the deep ocean water, and this temperature difference creates thermal energy. Just a small portion of the heat trapped in the ocean could power the world.Ocean thermal energy is used for many applications, including electricity generation. There are three types of electricity conversion systems: closed-cycle, open-cycle, and hybrid(混合的). Closed-cycle systems use the ocean's warm surface water to vaporize a working fluid, which has a low-boiling point, such as ammonia(氨). The vapor expands and turns a turbine. The turbine then activates a generator to produce electricity. Open-cycle systems actually boil the seawater by operating at low pressures. This produces steam that passes through a turbine/generator. And hybrid systems combine both closed-cycle and open-cycle systems.Ocean mechanical energy is quite different from ocean thermal energy. Even though the sun affects all ocean activities, tides are driven primarily by the gravitational pull of the moon, and waves are driven primarily by the winds. As a result, tides and waves are intermittent(间歇的,断断续续的)sources of energy, while ocean thermal energy is fairly constant. Also, unlike thermal energy, the electricity conversion of both tidal and wave energy usually involves mechanical devices.1.Renewable energy has no environmental impact.a. True.b. False.c. The company also publishes books and multimedia titles and offers electronic mail services. It has sales offices throughout the world but does virtually all of its research and development at its corporate headquarters in Redmond, Washington, U.S.In 1975 Bill Gates and Paul G. Allen, two boyhood friends from Seattle, converted BASIC, a popular mainframe programming language, for use on an early personal computer (PC) ,the Altair. Shortly afterward Gates and Allen founded Microsoft, deriving the name from the words “microcomputer” and “software”. Dur ing the next few years they refined BASIC and developed other programming languages. In 1980 International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) askedMicrosoft to produce the essential software, or operating system, for its first personal computer, the IBM PC. Microsoft purchased an operating system from another company, modified it, and renamed it MS-DOS( Microsoft Disk Operating System). MS-DOS was released with the IBM PC in 1981. Thereafter , most manufacturers of personal computers licensed MS-DOS as their operating system , generating vast revenues for Microsoft; by the early 1990s it had sold more than 100 million copies of the program and defeated rival operating systems such as CP/M ,which it displaced in the early 1980s, and later OS/2. Microsoft deepened its position in operating systems with its Windows graphical command program, whose third version, released in 1990, gained a wide following. By 1993, Windows 3.0 and its subsequent versions were selling at a rate of one million copies per month, and nearly 90 percent of the world’s PCs ran on a Microsoft operating system. In 1995 the company released Windows 95, which for the first time fully integrated MS-DOS with Windows and effectively matched in ease of use Apple Computer’s Macintosh OS. It also became the leader in productivity software such as word-processing and spreadsheet programs, outdistancing long-time rivals Lotus and WordPerfect in the process.33. Between 1922 and 1926 she was a writer and reporter for the Atlanta Journal. After an ankle injury in 1926 she left the magazine and, for the next 10 years, worked slowly on a romantic novel about the Civil War and Reconstruction as seen from a Southerner point of view. Scarlett O’Hara is the heroine of novel, and she is a strong-willed woman. The novel had absorbed the tragedy of the war and the romance of the history. Mitchell worked at her novel occasionally, composing episodes(情节) out of sequence and later fitting them together. She apparently had little thought of publication at first, and for six years after it was completely finished, the novel lay unread. But in 1935 Mitchell was persuaded to publish her manuscript. It appeared in 1936 as Gone with the Wind. Within six months 1,000,000 copies had been sold; 50,000 copies were sold in one day. It went on sell more copies than any other novel in U.S. publishing history, with sales passing 12 million by 1965, and was eventually translated into 25 languages and sold in 40 countries. It was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1937. The movie rights were sold for $50,000. The film, starring Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable and produced by David O. Selznick, premiered in Atlanta in December 1939 after an unprecedented period of advance promotion, including the highly publicized search for an actress to play Scarlett. It won nine major Oscars and two special Oscars at the Academy Awards and for two decades reigned as the top money-making film of all time. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 pm. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it's a matter of life and death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance. In social life, time plays a very important role. In the US guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But this is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time is different in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings arise between people from cultures that treat time differently. To be on time is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not on time, they may be regarded as not polite or not fully responsible. In the US no one would think of keeping a business associate waiting for an hour; it would be bad-mannered. A person who is five minutes late is expected to apologize. If he is less than five minutes late, he will say a few words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence.1. If you telephone someone early in the day, it means _______ D ____.A. you are expected to explain whyB. you are not kind enoughC. you want to show your concern for himD. you have a very important matter to discuss2. I n the US it’s not polite to keep someone waiting for an hour.C. In the US one is always expected to be on time.D. In the US one is expected to apologize if he is five minutes latePassage 4Ours is a big world, and full of many different people. People with many varying (不同的) points of view are often running up against others who have different opinions. Those of us who smoke are just one group of many. Recently, the activism (采取行动) of non-smokers has reminded us of the need to be considerate (体谅的) of others when we smoke in public. But, please! Enough is enough! We should like to remind non-smokers that being polite is a two-way street. If you politely request that someone not smoke you are more likely to receive an agreeable response than if you give an ugly look and say something unkind. If you speak directly to someone, you are more likely to get what you want than if you complain to the management. Many of us have been smoking for so long that we sometimes forget that others are not used to the smell of burning tobacco. We’re human, and like everyone else, we occasionally offend unknowingly. But most of us are open to friendly suggestions and comments, and quite willing to change our behavior to accommodate others.Smokers are people, too. We laugh and cry. We have hopes, dreams, and aspirations. We have children, mothers, and pets. We eat our hamburgers (汉堡包) with everything on them and give respect to the flag at Fourth of July picnics. We hope you'll remember that the next time a smoker light up in public.1. The purpose of the first paragraph is ______. DA. to inform the reader of the bigness of the worldB. to declare that the author belongs to the group of smokersC. to tell non-smokers that smokers will be considerateD. to reveal the author’s reason for writing this essay2. What does the second sentence in the second paragraph imply? CA. We should go on two different roads.B. We have different ways of doing things.C. Being polite to each other is a mutual thing.D. We can smoke and sometimes we will not smoke.3. According to the author, how can you get an agreeable response from smokers if you don’t feel like someone smoking beside you? DA. Complain to his boss.B. Tell him directly that you hate smokers.C. Keep from complaining but do something to suggest your feelings.D. Tell him politely that you are not used to smoke.4. According to the author, why do some smokers smoke in public? BA. Because they cannot stop from smoking.B. Because they forget that others do not like the smell cigarettes.C. Because they are humans and they cannot avoid offending people.D. Because there is no law against it.5. How does the author try to persuade the reader? BA. He uses reasons.B. He appeals to people’s feelings.C. He gives examples in his argument.D. He simply states his opinion.Part III Cloze(本大题共20小题,每小题1分,共20分)Directions: In this section there is a passage with 20 blanks. In your writing be sure to include the following points:Bicycling to work(1)lighten the burden on public transportation(2)save time (no need to wait or to change)(3)save fuel(4)do not pollute the air(5)do one’s health goodPlease write no less than 100 words. The End!Bicycling to WorkToday in China as well as in many other countries, many people ride a bike to work. This, I think, is a good practice. For one thing, it lightens the burden on public transportation, which is already too crowded. For another, it saves time. As public transportation is overburdened, it often takes a lot of waiting to get on a bus and to transfer from one bus line to another. In addition, cycling has no need for fuel and therefore does not in the least pollute the air. It benefits not only the rider himself but also the residents of the whole community. What’s more, cycling is good for people’s health. Nowadays, with the automation of factories and offices, work, to many people, means button-pressing. What better exercise could such workers have than cycling to and from work?In a word, cycling to work is good for the rider and for our environment.。

Amphibious Architecture: Flood-Proof Home Designs Instead of trying to beat back the rising flood, innovative amphibious buildings can adapt to the rising flood. These buildings are ready for whatever Mother Nature might throw at them– even 10-foot floodwaters. Let's take a look at just two of them. The UK's First Amphibious House The UK's first amphibious house is located on the Thames River. And the first amphibious building in Britain will be completed soon. Baca Architects designed this home for a couple who wanted to live on a flood-prone island, an island easy to be attacked by floods, in the Thames River. This building is equipped with a terraced landscape. And this terraced landscape acts as an early warning system when the waters are rising. The terraces will be filled with water before the ‘wet dock’ under the house does, and then the home itself will slowly rise to stay above the water. Solar Powered Floating School in Nigeria Residents of Makoko in Nigeria have been building houses on stilts for generations. People there go from one house to another by canoe. As sea levels are rising, officials threaten to tear down the entire community. If these houses are tore down, 250,000 people will be homeless and have to look for a new place to live. Architects found a solution in floating structures with improved sanitation conditions. The first completed example is a three-storey solar-powered school. This amazing floating school addresses social, physical and ecological needs. Built on top of 256 recycled blue barrels, the school buildings are made of triangular bamboo and wood. Makoko's residents made full use of their skills when building these structures. With three levels, the solar-powered high school has room for 100 local kids and recycles rainwater to flush the toilets. And the cost for the whole school structures was under $7,000. 1.Innovative amphibious buildings have adaptation to the rising flood. T 2.The first amphibious building in Britain has been completed. F 3.250,000 residents of Makoko in Nigeria will be homeless if officials tear down their houses. T 4.The firstcompleted floating school has three floors. T 5.In the opinion of the writer, the cost forthe floating school was quite high. F 二、阅读理解:阅读下面的短文,根据文章内容从A、B、C三个选项中选出一个最佳选项。

All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later theyagreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words. The power of words, then, lies in their associations (联想) —the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meanings for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something to us increases.Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming and telling use of wordsis what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music, and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should, therefore, learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly andvulgar (庸俗地).31. The origin of language is ______.A. a legend handed down from the pastB. a matter that is hidden or secretC. a question difficult to answerD. a problem not yet solved32. Which of the following is NOT true?A. Powerful words are closely associated.B. Words in proper combination bring up meaning before our minds.C. Words mean little to those without experience.D. Certain words mean more to us when we grow older.33. The more we read and learn, ______.A. the more meanings the words carryB. the more meaningful words we haveC. the more we want to learn wordsD. the more clever we become34. Which of the following statements about the real poet is NOT true?A. He is no more than a master of words.B. He can convey his ideas in words which sing like music.C. His literary style is always charming.D. His poems can move men to tears.35. “Literary style” refers to ______.A. how great thoughts are generatedB. how writers use words to appeal to our mind and feelingsC. how charming great writers areD. how writers tell us the different uses of wordsPassage TwoFriends play an important part in our lives and although we may take the friendship forgranted,we often don’t clearly understand how we make friends. Although we get on well with many people,we are usually friends with only a very few—for example, the average number of friends among students is about 6per person. In all the cases of friendly relationships, two people like one another and enjoy being together but beyond that, the degree of intimacy (亲密) between them and the reasons for their shared interest vary greatly. As we get to know people,we take into consideration things like age, race, economic condition, social position, and intelligence. Although these factors are not of first importance,it is more difficult to get on with people when there is an obvious difference in age and background. Some friendly relationships can be kept on argument and discussion, but it is usual for close friends to have similar ideas and beliefs,to have attitudes and interests in common—theyoften talk about “being on the same wavelength”. It generally takes time to reach this point. And the more intimately involved people become, the more they rely on one another. People want to help friends and hate to break a promise. Equally, friends have to learn to put up with annoying habits and to accept differences of opinion. In contrast with marriage, there are no friendship ceremonies (仪式) to strengthen the relationship between two people. But the supporting and understanding of each other that results from shared experiences and emotions does seem to create a powerful tie, which can overcome differences in background, and break down barriers of age, class or race.36. According to the author______.A. all those who get on well with each other are friendsB friends are closer than people who just get on well with each otherC. everyone understands clearly how to make friendsD. every student has six friends37. When we make friends,we consider such things as age, race, and background,because______.A. it is not easy to have a friendly relationship with people when there is a great difference inage,background,etc.B. the degree of friendship between two people and the reason for their shared interest canvary widelyC. friends need to know all these thingsD. these are the most important factors to make friends38. In Paragraph 2, “being on the same wavelength” means ______.A. using the same frequency while talkingB. keeping the same friendly relationship as other people doC. having similar ideas, beliefs, attitudes and interestsD. having the same background39. Which of the following is false according to the passage ?A. Even friends may have differences of opinions.B. Friends never argue with each other.C. It generally takes time for people to become close friends.D. Someone’s habits may annoy his friends.40. To strengthen friendly relationship, people______.A. must hold friendship ceremoniesB. have to remove differences in backgroundC. should make friends with those who are of the same age and of the same raceD. should support and understand each other through shared experiences and emotionsPassage ThreeYou are watching a film in which two men are having a fight. They hit one another hard. At the start they merely fight with their fists. But soon they begin hitting one another over the heads with chairs. And so it goes on until one of the men crashes through a window and falls thirty feet to the ground below. He is dead!Of course he isn’t really dead. With any luck he isn’t even hurt. Why? Because the men who fall out of high windows or jump from fast-moving trains, who crash cars or even catch fire, are professional. They do this for a living. These men are called “stuntmen”(特技演员). That is to say, they perform “tricks”There are two sides to their work. They actually do most of the things you see on the screen. For example, they fall from a high building. However, they do not fall on to hard ground but on to empty cardboard boxes covered with a mattress. Again, when they hit one another with chairs, the “chairs” are made of soft wood and when they crash through windows, the “glass” is made of sugar! But although their work depends on tricks of this sort, it also requires a high degree of skill and training. Often a stuntman’s success depends on precise timing. For example, when he is “blown up” in a battle scene, he has to j ump out of the way of the explosion just at the right moment.Naturally stuntmen are well paid for their work, but they lead dangerous lives. They often get seriously injured—and sometimes killed. A Norwegian stuntman, for example, skied over the edge of a precipice (悬崖峭壁) a thousand feet high. His parachute (降落伞)failed to open—and he was killed.41. According to the passage, stuntmen are people who ______.A. are skilled in sports such as skiing and skatingB. often do things which are really dangerousC. are good at pretending to die on the spotD. only pretend to do dangerous things42. Stuntmen do this kind of work in order to ______.A. earn moneyB. enjoy themselvesC. have good luckD. fool the audience43. When they jump from a high building, stuntmen ______.A. have parachutesB. are covered with a mattressC. fall on something softD. stand on hard ground44. In order to do their job well stuntmen have to be especially ______.A. strongB. punctualC. accurateD. intelligent45. ②B项没有能够正确理解purchasing power的含义,误译为“赚钱”,还把be more prepared touse it误译为“时刻准备消费掉”,只能得1分。
