Joe Horan, a physical education teacher, has started the program Building Men to create a positive vision of manhood not just for himself, but also for the boys he teaches. Looking back, Mr. Horan says his program developed from a low point in his life. In 2004 as he went through a hard time, he felt society’s definition of manhood was leading him down the wrong path. His life, he says, lacked substance and depth. “A desire became planted in my heart, that is, to find healing from the unhealthy messages I believed about manhood,” he says. Then, his sister recommended a book, Season of Life by Jeffrey Marx, which digs into the discovery of what being a man is all about. Joe took all the clues and started to put life lessons into his class.

The researchers explain that when you think of yourself as another person,it allows you to give more objective and useful feedback.8.What does the research say about self-talk?A.It is a daily habit for everyone.B.It can make people feel better.C.It may help strengthen memory.D.It is always an unconscious behavior. 9.What can be concluded from Hatzigeorgiadis’explanation?A.Self-talk occurs in different situations.B.Self-talk usually makes one brave. C.Self-talk arises with various feelings.D.Self-talk is closely linked with a certain task.10.What does the underlined word“detrimental”in paragraph4probably mean? A.Confusing.B.Useless.C.Harmful.D.Unbearable. 11.What can be a suitable title for the text?A.Self-talk:a close relation to the past B.Self-talk:a great way to avoid ill resultsC.Self-talk:a useful tool to benefit our life D.Self-talk:a matter of personal preferenceThis summer has brought extreme heat and droughts to places around the world. The droughts are leading to serious problems and the effects of the droughts are likely to be felt for years.Droughts aren’t new,but Earth’s rising temperatures because of global warming are making them much harder to avoid. The drought in the Horn of Africa may be the most serious situation. For several years, the area has had very little rain during the rainy seasons. The dry conditions have killed millions of farm animals and destroyed the crops of farmers. The drought is causing energy problems in Europe, too. The low water levels have cut the amount of hydroelectric power that can be produced. Some rivers are so low that the heavy boats that carry coal can’t travel on them.Farmers in California and Arizona have been hit particularly hard.California has put limits on water use across the state. Now water is being limited in other places. When there are water limits, farmers aren’t able to grow as many crops. That can drive up food prices, and that affects everyone.China is facing similar problems. The drought has dried up much of the water in the Yangtze,China’s longest river. That has cut the amount of energy produced by the world’s largest dam by40%.China hasn’t been able to produce enough energy, since millions of people are using electricity to keep cool. The government is calling on the public to turn off the air conditioner when it is not too hot.The country is trying to make it rain by shooting chemicals into clouds. But this is an uncertain and temporary response. There are no easy solutions to any of these droughts. It took years to create the climate crisis, and it will take a long time to get it under control. For now, governments and people will need to carefully manage water supplies and other resources to limit the damage as much as possible.12.What has been affected by droughts according to the passage? A.Technology.B.Transportation.C.Education.D.Tourism.13.What measures have been taken to deal with droughts in China?A.Bringing water from other countries.B.Finding replacement for rain water.C.Limiting the use of drinking water.D.Controlling the use of electricity.14.How might the author feel about the fight against drought?A.Concerned.B.Satisficed.C.Disappointed.D.Optimistic.15.What can be the best title for the passage?A.Worldwide Droughts Appeared as New ProblemsB.China Is also Facing the Serious Drought ProblemC.Droughts Cause Problems Around the WorldD.Many Reasons Lead to the Drought Problem二、七选五Have you ever said to yourself“I’ll do it tomorrow“?____16____When people delay action or put off decisions in this way,we call it procrastination.Sometimes it can be a good time management strategy to“do it later,”especially if we are tired or waiting for something to make the job easier. However, procrastination is actually more than just practical time management.Procrastination happens when a person has difficulty managing negative emotions, such as anxiety, boredom, and stress. It is very easy for procrastination to become a habit, and many people try hard to break away from the cycle of guilt and shame that it can create.____17____Here is some useful advice to help us deal with it:Use a calendarPlanning out time for everything you want to do will help you stay organized.____18____This can allow you extra time in case an emergency occurs.Break big projects into small pieces____19____So it’s better to take things step by step.“Do the housework“sounds like abig task, but if you begin with“do the dishes”and then move on to“do the laundry,”it might not seem so hard.Reward and forgive yourselfPeople get caught up in being perfect.____20____If you provide a small reward at the end of a project,it can help you finish what you start. Also,it will give you something to look forward to.Even when you don’t succeed, remember to be kind to yourself. When you’re ready, try again!A.And have you ever said that three or four days in a row?B.Procrastination is a serious problem for students and office workers.C.This can really get in the way of finishing a task.D.It can be challenging to think about how much there is to do.E.You can avoid procrastination by pushing a deadline up to get ahead of schedule. Let me tell you all about it.The test started off with some multiple-choice questions, which were not too difficult. They were all about grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. There were also some fill-in-the-blank questions and matching exercises. I made sure to read each question carefully and double-check my answers before moving on.Next, we had a section where we had to write an essay. The topic was about my favorite hobby and why I love it. I wrote about how much I enjoy playing soccer with my friends and how it helps me relax and stay active. I even included some personal experiences to make my essay more interesting. After the essay, we had to do a listening comprehension exercise. We listened to a conversation between two people discussing their favorite movies, and then we had to answer some questions about it. The questions were not too hard, but some were a bit tricky. The first part of the test was about grammar. We had to fill in the blanks with the correct verb tense or form. Like, they gave us a sentence and we had to choose between present simple, pastcontinuous, or future perfect. It was a piece of cake for me because I had been practicing a lot. Then, there was a reading comprehension part. They gave us a passage about climate change and asked us questions about it. We had to find the main idea, the supporting details, and the author's opinion. It was so interesting to read about and discuss with my classmates. After that, we had a listening section. The teacher played an audio recording and we had to answer the questions based on what we heard. It was a bit challenging because the speaker had a strong accent, but we managed to understand most of it.The last part of the test was writing an essay. We had to choose a topic and write about it in at least 300 words. I chose to write about my favorite book and why I would recommend it to others. It was so much fun to express my thoughts and ideas in English.Overall, I really enjoyed taking the English test in high school. AElectric Shocks Can Be FatalGovernment statistics recently showed that in the UK, more than 3,000 people a year experience electric shocks in their home. A smaller number of people are killed after contact with power lines outside the home. Electric shocks can cause a person’s heart or breathing to stop, can also cause burns and are potentially fatal. It is essential for people to learn basic first aid techniques to deal with such emergencies. What to do?●If you are the first person to reach someone who has had an electric shock, don’t touch them!●If they are still holding the appliance (家用电器) that has given them shock(e.g. a hair dryer), unplug it or turnoff the power at its source. Under no circumstances will you try to move the appliance with your hand!●If you can’t turn off the power, use a piece of wood, like a broom handle or a chair, to separate the victim from the appliance or the power source. You may even be able to do this with a folded newspaper.●The victim must remain lying down. If they are unconscious, victims should b e placed on their side. But they should not be moved if there is a possibility of neck or spine injuries unless it is absolutely necessary.●It is essential to maintain the victim’s body heat, so make sure you cover him or her with a blanket before you do anything else. If the victim is not breathing, apply mouth-to-mouth resuscitation(恢复呼吸). Keep the victim’s head low until professional help arrives.●If the electric shock has been caused by an external power line, the dangers to the victim and to anybody providing first aid are much greater.1.What kind of passage is it?A. An advertisement.B. A horror story.C. A news report.D.First aid emergency advice.2.The underlined sentence, “Under no circumstances will you try to move the appliance with your hand!” implies that _____.A. you should move the appliance that caused itB. you should pick up the appliance and turn off the electricityC. it is very dangerous to touch the appliance with your handsD. it is unnecessary to unplug the appliance with your hands3.When a person has got an electric shock, you should .A. separate the victim from the appliance and let them sit upB. keep the victim warm and help them breathe againC. move the victim onto their side if they have got neck injuriesD. keep the victim’s head high until professional help arrivesBIf you see someone drowning, speed is very important. Once you get him out of the water, if he isn't breathing, you have four minutes before his brain is completely destroyed. Support his neck, tilt(使翘起) his head back and press his chin (下巴) upwards. This stops the tongue blocking the airway in the throat and is sometimes enough to get him breathing again. If that doesn't work, start mouth-to-mouth breathing. Press his nostrils (鼻孔) together with your fingers. Open your mouth and take a deep breath. Blow into his lungs until his chest rises, then remove your mouth and watch his chest fall. Repeat twelve times a minute. Keep doing until help arrives. To bring a child back to life, keep your lips around his mouth and nose and gently blow into his mouth. Give the first four breaths as quickly as possible to fill the blood with oxygen. If, in spite of your efforts, he starts turning a blue-grey color, and youcan feel no pulse (脉搏) , then pressing is the last chance of saving his life. With arms straight, rock forwards, pressing down on the lower half of the breastbone. Don't be too hard or you may break a rib(肋骨). Check how effective you are seeing if his color improves or his pulse becomes independent to your chest pressing. If this happens, stop the pressing. Otherwise continue until rescue arrives.4. This passage is mainly about ______ .A. how to save people out of the waterB. how to give first aid to people who are drowningC. how to do mouth-to-mouth breathingD. how to save a child from a river5. It has long been a goal of some researchers to produce tiny robotic devices which are capable of travelling through the body to deliver drugs or tomake repairs without the need for a single cut, the possibility of which has just got a bit closer. However, unlike the plot of one film---which featured a microscopic crew and submarine traveling through a scientist’s bloodstream---this device couldn’t be inserted into blood vessels(管) because it is too big. While other types of miniature swallowable robots have been developed in the past, their role has mostly been limited to capturing images inside the body. In a presentation this week to the International Conference, Daniela Rus and Shuhei Miyashita of the Massachusetta Institute of Technology described a robot they have developed that can be swallowed and used to collect dangerous objects accidentally taken in.To test their latest version, Dr Rus and Dr Miyashita designed a robot as a battery hunter, which might seem to be an odd task, but more than 3,500 people in America alone, most of them children, accidentally swallow the tiny button cells used in small electronic devices every year. To start with, the researchers created an artificial oesophagus(食道) and stomach made out of silicone(硅胶). It was closely modeled on that found in a pig and filled with medical liquid; the robot itself is made from several layers of different materials, including pig intestine(肠), and contains a little magnet. This is folded up and encased in a 10mm x 27mm capsule of ice. Once this reaches the stomach the ice melts and the robot unfolds which is moved and guided with the use of a magnetic field outside the body.In their tests, the robot was able to touch a button battery and draw it with its own magnet and during dragging it along, the robot could then be directed towards the intestines where it would eventually be gotten rid through the anus(肛门). After it, the researchers sent in another robot loaded with medication to deliver it to the site of the battery burn to speed up healing. The artificial stomach being transparent on one side, the researchers were able to see the batteries and visually guide the robots. If not, that will require help with guidance from imaging systems ,which will be a bit more of a challenge, but Dr Rus and Dr Miyashita are determined to succeed.8.According to the passage, the robot operation will probably be able to___A.travel through a scientist’s bloodstreamB.photograph the body to convey to the doctorC.enter the body to deliver drugs or make repairsD.operate on a person outside the body completely9.We can learn from Paragraph 3 that_____A.The researchers did the experiment on a chosen animalB.The robot took necessary drugs besides a little magnetC.Digesting the swallowed batteries is difficult for childrenD.The actual size of the robot may be larger than the capsule of ice10.What may be experiment mean to the medical world?A.The surgeries will cost patients much moneyB.Patients will suffer less for some surgeriesC.Fewer children will swallow the button cellsD. A robot will be invented travelling blood vessel11.Which can be the most suitable title for the passage?A.An Experience on RobotB.Tiny Robot, Significant RoleC.The fantastic Robotic VoyageD.The exploration of Robot TechnologyDEuropeans have been using the wheelbarrow for about eight hundred years. But the Chinese invented it at least ten centuries before that. Ancient Chinese gave the wheelbarrow nice names -Wooden Ox and Gliding Horse. "In the time taken by a man (with a similar burden) to go six feet, the Wooden Ox could get twenty feet," wrote an admiring historian in AD 430. "It could carry the food supply (of one man) for a whole year, and yet after twenty miles the porter would not feel tired."A famous general called Chuke Liang developed wheelbarrows two hundred years before this historian was writing, to help carry supplies for his army. But, very recently, pictures have been discovered on ancient tombs, and bricks, of even earlier wheelbarrows. So perhaps they were invented in the first century AD.No one knows how people in Europe found out about the wheelbarrow -or, for that matter, about many other Chinese inventions. Perhaps the idea came overland across the steppes, with nomadic (游牧的) tribes. Or perhaps traders using the famous silk-route to the great city of Constantinople, on the eastern edge of the Mediterranean, talked about things seen in far-off China. Probably someone who heard the talk worked out his own version, because the wheelbarrow used in Europe is a different design from the Chinese. It has the wheel out in front, so that the load is supported both by the wheel and the man pushing it. The wheelbarrow in China has the wheel in the middle, right under the load, and the pusher only has to steer and balance it. At all events, some time in the twelfth or thirteenth century, workmen building the great castles and cathedrals of Europe had, to their great relief, a new simple device to help them. One man with a wheelbarrow could carry the same load as two men and much more easily and quickly. The wheel took the place of a man.12. The historian admired the wheelbarrow because it could move faster and________.A.carry the food supply of one manB.carry the food supply for a whole yearC.carry a heavy load for twenty milesD.carry a much heavier load and save energy13. The Chinese invention of the wheelbarrow might have reached Europe with the help of any of the following except ________.A. nomadic tribesB. traders using the silk-routeC. MediterraneanD. ancient Greeks14. The European design of the wheelbarrow ________.A. has the wheel in the middle under the loadB. is similar to that of the ChineseC.needs less pushing forceD. is less scientific than the Chinese one15. The final paragraph discusses ________.A. the European wheelbarrowB. the difference between the European wheelbarrow and the ChinesewheelbarrowC.how the idea of the wheelbarrow came to EuropeD.the invention of the wheelbarrow第二部分英语知识运用完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
