Brief Introduction to Yantai

Situated on the north coast of Shandong Peninsula, Yantai is a beautiful beach side city. It faces the Bohai and the Huanghai Sea in the north and south. Across the seas to the east and southeast are the P. R. Korea, South Korea and Japan.

Under the jurisdiction of Yantai are six districts, one county, and seven county-level cities. Yantai has a total land area of 13,700 square kilometers, of which the urban area is 2,643.6 square kilometers; the total population is 6,500,000 of which the urban population is 1,789,000.

Influenced by sea and ocean, Yantai has a mild climate with an average temperature of 12℃. Its annual rainfall is 600-700 mm, mostly between July and September. Here, it’s cool in summer and warm in winter. It’s a n ideal place for vacation, especially in summer.

Half of Yantai is near the sea and half of Yantai is mountainous, the scenery is fantastic. Because of the beautiful scenery and its mysterious location, Yantai has earned the reputation of “Fairy Land” sin ce ancient times. Both in ancient and modern times, noted figures and men of letters came to search for longevity medicine and to visit places of historical interests. According to historical records, more than two thousand years ago, Emperor Qin Shi Huang(the emperor who is known for having unified China) came to Yantai three times to make inspections. Emperor Wudi of the Han Dynasty, Emperor Taizhong of the Tang Dynasty, Emperor Gaozhu of the Song Dynasty also came to Yantai.

There is a small hill on the north coast of the city proper. According to records, at the beginning of the Ming Dynasty (1398), beacon towers were

built on the hill where smoke from burnt wolf-dung warned people of the approach of pirates. The beacon was also called “smoking terrace”, which in Chinese is 烟台. Later, the hill was called “Y antai Hill”, and thus the city got its name from it.

Yantai is a famous summer resort. It has rich tourist resources. Scattered along its 909 kilometers meandering coastline are many beautiful islands, as well as harbors and fine golden sand beaches. Places of interests in the area include Penglai Pavilion, one of the four most well-known ancient pavilions in China; Penglai Water City, the only one well-preserved ancient naval base in China; the cliff stone carvings and tablets of calligraphy of the Northern Wei Dynasty on Yunfeng Mountain, which are considered rare treasures of Chinese calligraphy; Changdao Islands, which are called “fairy island in the sea”; and Mou’s Family Manor in Qixia, the largest-scale landlord manor of the feudal society in North China. There are also rustic mountain areas and fishing villages, the legend of Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea, and the mysterious mirages.

Wide in hinterland and rich in produce, Yantai is a famous “ho me of fish and fruit” in North China. It is abundant in prawns, abalones, sea cucumbers, scallops, as well as many kinds of fruits, such as famous Yantai apples, Laiyang pears, big cherries, and grapes. It is famous for its cuisine, known as a birthplace o f Lu food, and as a good place to eat seafood. “The scenery here of mountains and sea is beautiful; the fruits are sweet; the fish and prawns are fresh and delicious.” This gives a good description of Yantai.

Yantai produces about one-fifth of China’s gold.
